Given that the last couple of times "The Twilight Zone" was reinvented for television, the show(s) kind of sucked, we're not too excited about this announcement. However, we are excited by the talent behind this go-round into another dimension.

According to Deadline, X-Men director Bryan Singer has closed a deal to develop, executive produce, and possibly direct a reboot of Rod Serling’s classic. The drama series project, now in early stages, is set up at CBS TV Studios, which has the rights to the original series, and a search is under way for a writer to pen the new "Twilight Zone". The project has not been pitched to networks yet, but CBS is an obvious destination since CBS TV Studios only supplies CBS and The CW on the broadcast side and CBS carried the original series as well as the first revival.

The original "Twilight Zone" series ran on CBS from 1959-1964. CBS also aired a remake, which ran from 1985-1989. The most recent series reboot, hosted by Forest Whitaker, premiered on UPN in 2002 and lasted one season.

Once a script makes Hollywood's Black List, it doesn't take long before someone snaps it up. Case in point: the Barbara Marshall spec script Peste, which has been acquired by IM Global Octane, the genre arm of IM Global. Read on for details.

Sherryl Clark, who headed film for Bad Robot and was an executive producer on Cloverfield, came attached to produce, and she and IM Global will quickly set a director and start production by the first half of 2013.

Synopsis:
A teenage girl begins a video documentary about her life for a school project just as a terrifying virus sweeps through her small town. Quarantined with her family, she thinks they are out of harm’s way, but she soon learns that the virus has invaded their house. Her video documents the family’s frantic struggle to find a cure before they are completely taken over by the Peste.

The script was written as the first part of a planned trilogy. More as it comes.

During the 1950s and 1960s filmmaker Roger Corman created several classic horror films based upon the work of 19th century writer Edgar Allan Poe. When it comes to the macabre, few do it better than Poe, and Corman captured that perfectly. Now Roger is getting ready to start anew.

According to THR at age 86(!) Roger Corman is remaking eight of his classic films based on the works of Poe - House of Usher, The Pit and the Pendulum, Premature Burial, Tales of Terror, The Raven, The Haunted Palace, The Masque of the Red Death, and The Tomb of Ligeia.

This time Corman will produce but not direct the films, with the first to shoot in 2013, followed by two a year after that on budgets of $2 million to $2.5 million (the originals were shot for $250,000 to $350,000, not adjusting for inflation, on 15-day schedules).

The new productions will be self-financed by Corman’s New Horizons Productions, which will give the films at least a short domestic theatrical release and offer international rights at the American Film Market.

“Now being able to do them in 3D and with a lot of computer graphics, we can do things we never dreamed of doing before,” he says.

But that won’t include more violence.

“Poe always worked with the unconscious mind, and there’s a lot of fantasy,” he explains.

Corman, honored at the first Governors Awards in 2009, says his biggest concern is replacing his legendary leading man Vincent Price, who died in 1993. Corman hopes to find a fiftysomething actor known from TV who, he says, can bring the same level of “sensitivity and neuroticism that Vincent was able to bring.”

Another comic-to-film adaptation is on its way from 20th Century Fox as the studio has acquired the film rights to Top Cow's Theory of Everything. Read on for all the details, and then tell us what your theory of everything is.

Deadline reports that Fox is closing a deal for the sci-fi action thriller that follows a disgraced scientist as he seeks to rescue his wife from a parallel dimension — a woman who was previously assumed dead. The film will be produced by Oscar-winning American Beauty producer Dan Jinks.

The idea was hatched by Dan Casey and Nick Nantell, the latter a senior veep of The Dan Jinks Co. Casey will write the script and Nantell will be co-producer, while Matt Hawkins and Marc Silvestri of Top Cow Comics are executive producers. Fox’s Mike Ireland is steering the project.

John Grant (Gary Bond, Anne of the Thousand Days, the BBC's Great Expectations) teaches at a tiny school in the Outback. On his way to Sydney to catch a vacation flight, he stops in a rural mining town, where he is reluctantly drawn into the macho antics of the local men. After losing his money in the gambling game two-up, he is taken on a drunken and brutal kangaroo hunt with three of the beer-guzzling louts - a horrifying ordeal that culminates in a shattering sexual assault.

WAKE IN FRIGHT had its world premiere at the 1971 Cannes Film Festival, where it was nominated for a Palme d'Or. Retitled Outback and hurried into a few theaters across the U.S. with minimal advertising support, the movie lasted barely a week before it was pulled from circulation and vanished into obscurity. For over three decades the film materials were thought to be lost, until the movie's persistent cinematographer unearthed the original negative elements in Pennsylvania in canisters marked for imminent destruction.

The materials were painstakingly restored frame by frame, and the new restoration was invited back to Cannes in 2009. Guest curator Martin Scorsese said: "WAKE IN FRIGHT is a deeply - and I mean deeply - unsettling and disturbing movie. I saw it when it premiered at Cannes in 1971, and it left me speechless. Visually, dramatically, atmospherically and psychologically, it's beautifully calibrated and it gets under your skin one encounter at a time, right along with the protagonist played by Gary Bond. I'm excited that WAKE IN FRIGHT has been preserved and restored and that it is finally getting the exposure it deserves."

The film went on to a successful theatrical release in 50 top markets this fall. It has been lauded for its stark and uncompromising vision by such champions as Rex Reed, who said it "may be the greatest Australian film ever made," and celebrated musician and screenwriter Nick Cave, who said it's "the best and most terrifying film about Australia in existence."

It was pretty damned hard to find a theatre that was playing The Awakening during its limited run, but thankfully we can all finally see this ghostly tale for ourselves as it's poised to make its home video debut.

Directed by Nick Murphy, the film stars Rebecca Hall, Dominic West, Imelda Staunton, Lucy Cohu, John Sharpnel and Diana Kent. Look for it in stores on January 29th, 2013.

It was about a year ago when we got word that Universal had acquired the screen rights to Laini Taylor's Daughter of Smoke & Bone, and now finally the studio is preparing to move ahead with it after landing a producer for the film.

Per Deadline, Joe Roth, who produced Snow White and the Huntsman for Universal and is working on the sequel, will produce the film adaptation of Daughter of Smoke & Bone, the young-adult fantasy novel by National Book Award Finalist Taylor. Roth Film President Palak Patel will executive produce.

The protagonist is a 17-year-old art student who is sent by her awful father on travels across the globe to collect teeth for an unspecified but creepy purpose. This leads her to an encounter with an angel and revelations about her family that lead her into adventures involving otherworldly beings.

The book was published in the U.S. in September 2011 by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. The second installment, Days of Blood & Starlight, was published last month.

“In Daughter of Smoke & Bone, Laini Taylor masterfully tells a story of identity and destiny that welcomes readers into a fantastical world with a unique mythology,” said Roth. “It is very different than anything we’ve seen before, and I look forward to bringing the fascinating characters to the big screen.”

Said the author: “I am a huge fan of his big, gorgeous fantasy epics with powerful female characters. I can’t wait to see how he’ll bring my world to life on film. He’s the dream producer for this property, and I couldn’t be happier.”

Irrational Games has released a new video for BioShock Infinite that will give gamers the chance to watch the first few moments of the title. You are Booker DeWitt and your journey awaits starting February 26, 2013 in BioShock Infinite.

BioShock Infinite is in development for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system and Windows-based PC, and is not yet rated by the ESRB.

Who better to spread some holiday fear than the devilishly cute Sam from the Trick 'r Treat flick? That's exactly what happens in this latest sliver of yuletide terror courtesy of the good folks over at FEARnet. Dig it!

FEARnet, the cable industry’s premier genre network, is giving its audience an early Christmas present today when it begins airing a specially produced ‘holiday-themed’ interstitial by Trick ‘r Treat’s writer/director Mike Dougherty and Zach Shields (Dead Man’s Bones.) The interstitial stars the Trick ‘r Treat cuddly pumpkin-filled character Sam, who not into mischief not only on Halloween but during Christmastime, too.

Sam doesn’t act alone in this festive interstitial but has the help of a little girl in creating snowmen of all shapes and sizes. In true horror fashion, these Sam-created snowmen are just that…real men (victims) encased in snow!

A Christmas Tale (Cuento de Navidad) is from the 2006 Spanish TV movie series Films to Keep You Awake. Think along the lines of Showtime's "Masters of Horror," and you've got the idea. The show featured a slew of different directors, but A Christmas Tale was helmed by a genre favorite, none other than one of the masterminds behind the [REC] series, Paco Plaza.

The film focuses on a group of pre-teens who find a woman dressed in a Santa suit who's fallen into a deep hole in the woods. Before they can rescue her, it comes to their attention that she's actually a dangerous thief named Rebeca Exposito, who has just stolen $2 million. Even pre-teens know that if you've got somebody stuck in a hole who just made off with a stash of loot like that, you've got to see some green before you're helping them out. Add in a voodoo curse gone wrong, and you've got something that feels like The Goonies meet the undead.

A Christmas Tale has some truly great moments in it. The initial zombie reveal, for instance, is top-notch. And as greed settles in on the group of kids and they have to go further and further to try to get the money out of Exposito, the viewer eventually questions just who is the more guilty party--the original thief or the band of children who appeared so innocent at the beginning of the film. Notable performances are given by Maru Valdivielso, who plays the trapped thief, and Ivana Baquero, whom viewers will recognize as the little girl from Pan's Labyrinth.

This movie, which has a runtime of just over an hour, has good scares, nice F/X and some solid laughs. It's a Christmas treat that many may not be familiar with, but it is certainly worth searching out. Check out the trailer for the entire series below.

With Frankenweenie getting set to make its DVD and Blu-ray debut on January 8th, word has just come that in addition to the movie we'll be getting a bonus short film that's likely to fill classic horror fans with glee.

As per USA Today...

"Captain Sparky vs. the Flying Saucers is another movie-within-a-movie, which finds Sparky recruited into duty when the most low-budget alien spacecraft ever begins attacking the planet." Frankenweenie's animation supervisor Mark Waring helmed the short.

The Frankenweenie voice cast includes four actors who worked with Burton on previous films: Winona Ryder (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands), Catherine O’Hara (Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas), Martin Short (Mars Attacks!), and Martin Landau (Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow), along with Charlie Tahan and Atticus Shaffer.

Synopsis
A heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous.

Open Road Films will release A Haunted House– which stars Marlon Wayans, Cedric the Entertainer, David Koechner, Nick Swardson, and Essence Atkins – nationwide on January 11, 2013.

With NBC set to premiere the new series "Do No Harm" in just a little over a month, the network has released another promo, this one entitled "He Becomes Me," in which the show's star, Steven Pasquale, describes how his alter-ego Ian Price takes over in true Jekyll and Hyde fashion. Check it out!

In some unfortunate news out of Canada, Quebec-based filmmaker Remy Couture has been charged with "corrupting morals through the distribution, possession and production of obscene materials in a case that explores the boundaries of artistic expression."

National Post reports that a jury comprised of seven women and five men sat in stunned silence as hundreds of photos and two videos of Couture's work, featuring gruesome murders, torture, assaults and necrophilia with female victims, were shown. The jury must decide whether they are obscene and dangerous and could incite anyone to reenact what they see. Things don't look good for the Couture camp as the jury asked if the viewing of the materials could be sped up. Each photo was being shown for 10 seconds, and the jury felt that length of time was unnecessary.

Couture faces up to two years in prison if convicted on this charge. And perhaps more importantly, a precedent will have been set. As you can see by the video below, Couture's stuff is pretty extreme and quite realistic looking (kudos on the F/X, Remy!), but to convict a special F/X artist for plying his craft is ridiculous and dangerous. Once the first shoe drops, who will be the next artist to be silenced? I'd say you can pretty much kiss The Human Centipede 3 good-bye, and don't even dream about a follow-up to A Serbian Film!

One of the points of contention seems to be whether Couture's site, Inner Depravity, featured a warning to viewers describing the explicit content contained within the pages. The Montreal police reported finding no type of warning; however, Couture's defense team produced evidence showing that the site did indeed provide a warning that alerts potential viewers to the graphic content of the site. It also states no one was harmed in the making of the films and the site is dedicated to horror and special F/X.

Couture first came onto Interpol's radar in 2006 when a complaint from an Internet user in Austria arose. From there, a European pathologist could not say with certainty that the crimes on the film were not actually real. However, all the videos on Couture's site have credits at the end, identifying all the actors and actresses taking part in the production.

Couture was arrested in 2009, and the hearing began on Monday with two weeks set aside for the showing of evidence. A documentary is being filmed on the case, and a fundraiser is currently active to cover Couture's legal funds at supportremy.com.

“The thing about Prometheus was it was a rewrite. Jon Spaihts wrote a script and I rewrote it. And still it was a year of my life that I spent on Prometheus, kind of all in. The idea of building a sequel to it—from the ground up this time—with Ridley is tremendously exciting. But at the same time, I was like, 'Well that’s probably going to be two years of my life.' I can’t do what J.J. [Abrams] does. I don’t have the capability. I’m usually very single-minded creatively. I can only be working on one thing at a time. So I said to him, 'I really don’t think I could start working on this movie until I do this other stuff. And I don’t know when the other stuff is going to be done.' And he was like, 'Well, okay, it’s not like I asked you anyways.' He and I are on excellent terms, and it was a dream come true to work with him. But much to the delight of all the fanboys, I don’t see myself being involved in Prometheus-er."

Looking for some indie fun in the new year? Depending on your location you'll be able to get your fix as Anchor Bay Films has announced that Austin Chick’s Girls Against Boys (review here) will open in both New York and Los Angeles theaters on February 1st.

This SXSW darling was directed by Austin Chick and stars Danielle Panabaker, Nicole LaLiberte, Liam Aiken, Michael Stahl-David, and Andrew Howard.

Synopsis
Girls Against Boys is a character-driven, psychological thriller about two girls on a killing spree in New York. With edgy and ironic humor and a darkly meditative tone that is far more European or Asian than typically American, it is also a coming-of-age story about a young woman coming to understand how the world really works. It’s a ride for sure, and it even gets more than a little gruesome, but it's character-driven rather than action-driven, and it has a psychological twist that's more like a way of reading the film than a big reveal.

Playing as part of Sundance's recently announced Park City at Midnight line-up for the 2013 fest (which runs January 17-27 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Sundance, Utah) is Jim Mickle's remake of We Are What We Are (review here), and we have some new stills for ya!

Ambyr Childers (Gangster Squad, Playback) stars in the rural psychological thriller We Are What We Are alongside Julia Garner, Bill Sage, and Wyatt Russell.

We Are What We Are, picked up by eOne Entertainment this year in Berlin, is directed by Stake Land's Jim Mickle and is based on the 2010 Mexican film and Cannes Film Festival entry Somo Lo Que Hay. Andrew D. Corkin and Nicholas Shumaker produce.

Mickle will transpose Mexican director Jorge Michel Grau’s picture about a family of cannibals from its original setting of Mexico City to a poor part of the Catskills region in New York state.
