So now that 2013 is upon us and all the Mayan doomsday nonsense of 2012 can be tossed into the same landfill with the bygone Y2K doomsday conspiracies, Roland Emmerich’s magnum opus 2012 can officially be labeled a comedy. I consider that reason enough to sing.

Ever since viewing 2012, I have remained stalwart in my belief that Roland Emmerich's entire life and career had been building to this one insane orgy of apocalyptic disaster porn. If it doesn't erupt, it crumbles. If it doesn't crumble, it explodes. It if doesn't explode, it gets washed away. Planet Earth becomes one great big fire sale - everything must go (down, preferably in flames)! All of it brought to you with the usual Emmerich logic-defying science, half-baked melodrama, overwrought reaction shots, eye-rolling dialogue, and bipolar politics (Government conspiracies - BOO! Only government conspirators can save us - YAY!)

Hollywood still seems to be interested in making disaster flicks, though I don’t know why. They should just retire the entire disaster movie genre’s jersey after this one because there’s nothing left other than to destroy the entire planet outright. Hang good ol' #2012 from the rafters because there will never be another big screen Armageddon like it.

Or will there?

Hmmm…

Guaranteed to be the source of much ridicule for generations to come…

I do believe an argument could be made that 2012 is this generation's The Swarm. Many have referred to Roland Emmerich as this generation’s Irwin Allen so that would make perfect sense.

One thing Allen’s killer bee bomb didn’t have that Emmerich’s end-of-the-world epic did is a theme song and music video as overly dramatic as the film it serenades.

Enter “American Idol” runner-up Adam Lambert to put the “emo” in “emoting” as he pours his heart out singing “Time for Miracles”. This is a movie theme song so overblown it feels like it was conceived for the sole purpose of garnering a Best Song Oscar nomination. It didn’t.

Synopsis
This metaphor for the Soskas' own journey through the independent film industry follows medical student Mary Mason as she becomes increasingly broke and disenchanted. The allure of easy money sends Mary into the twilight world of body modification and underground surgeries where obsessed flesh artists will pay anything and go through any pain to get their unusual procedures done. But Mary soon finds that her new "profession" leaves more marks on her own psyche than on her freakish clientele.

Our friends over at Twitch are reporting that director Rigoberto Castaneda is in the process of readying a sequel to his 2007 horror flick Kilometer 31 (review). No other details are available at press time, but stay tuned.

First up in our series is co-star Tania Raymonde ("Lost,""Death Valley"), who plays Nikki, the best friend of Heather Miller (Alexandra Daddario), who inherits much more than a mansion after her long-lost Aunt Verna passes away. As we discuss with Raymonde, Nikki is the 'resident slut' in TC3D but isn't a total lost cause either- the actress explains why as well as discusses the challenges she faced during one hellacious stunt in particular and talks about the pressure of living up to horror fans' expectations, too.

Dread Central: So Nikki is a character that seems completely against type for you and definitely a bit different from the roles we've seen you in previously. Was part of the appeal of this role that you'd get to have some fun and mix it up a bit in your career then?

Tania Raymonde:Oh yeah; it was fun because she's this typical free-spirit, slutty girl in a horror movie that you always expect to see in them (laughs). I never expected to be playing this kind of character, but I'm all for doing something vastly different too whenever I can. But it was just freeing playing that kind of expected role and hopefully fans have fun with her, too.

Dread Central: Even though she was the 'slutty' friend, she still had a bit of intelligence to her.

Tania Raymonde:Sure; plus she wasn't written as a one-dimensional character either so even though she's slutty, she still cares about her friend. She's not dumb, she's got a good sense to her and she's kind of a badass so there were some great qualities to her, too. That's what I like about this movie; there are a lot of familiar things to this world and this story, but there are also a lot of new qualities and surprises.

Dread Central: Considering the legacy of this franchise, was it daunting to you at all when you came on board Texas Chainsaw 3D because you knew the fans' expectations for this film were going to be pretty high?

Tania Raymonde:Oh absolutely; plus it's also one of the best titles of a movie- horror or otherwise- ever. But yeah, there is a lot of pressure on us and on the filmmakers too to keep this legacy going. It is such a beloved, cult horror hit so for sure it's a huge responsibility for anyone to take on rebooting this entire series.

Horror fans are a particular kind of movie fan so they truly, deeply care about their favorite horror movies so you want to make sure to try and please those people since ultimately that's who you're making these movies for. They see horror movies as an art form and believe in it so it's a big responsibility to make a sequel that in no way denigrates the original film also. You just have to hope that you've done something that does justice to the whole franchise.

Dread Central: There was a lot of physicality to your role, particularly the van scene with Alex where Leatherface flips you guys over and over (Note: not a spoiler, it's in the trailer)- can you discuss the difficulties of the stunts on Texas Chainsaw 3D and that scene in particular?

Tania Raymonde:Oh yeah, it was tough; in some instances you can kind of plot out what you're going to do in a scene so you try and practice moves and stuff so you can get an idea of how things will go. But in the case of the van scene, there's really just no way you can prepare for a scene like that. In terms of logistics, I really had no idea how we were going to shoot that scene in 3D until just an hour or so before we started shooting it.

So it ended up taking us three days just to shoot that scene because we went at it all practical when we shot it. It just took forever to do. And the chainsaw was really going through the glass window, the van was really flipping and we were really in it when it was flipping so that kind of stuff was definitely very challenging for me.

Also, the tough thing about horror movies is that you have to maintain that high level of terror a lot of the time- and for a long period of time too- that after a 13- or 14-hour day, you just feel god-awful. You feel horrible, almost to the point where you feel like you want to throw up but then you just start playing little psychological mind games with yourself to keep yourself going. But it was an interesting challenge; I had never done a horror movie before Texas Chainsaw 3D.

Fans of the Hellsing manga series are going to be thrilled to hear the news that Solar Eclipse Films is currently elbow-deep in creating the official Hellsing movie, and the co-writer of the entire Dark Knight trilogy, David S. Goyer, is slated to direct.

Solar Eclipse Films purchased the rights to Hellsing after a five-year process and plans to begin filming in early to mid 2013. With Goyer in tow to direct, the production company is in the process of bringing some huge names to the cast. More info on that as we get it. Hellsing will be the first in a series of films, but the initial movie will focus on the first four manga books.

Asim Ahmad is the writer and will be playing the role of Alucard. (Asim will also be playing Professor Michael Morbius in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Nice!) Jake Sharp will play the role of Father Anderson with Ana Johnsson as Integra and Daniel Bernhardt as Walter.

For the second installment in our Texas Chainsaw 3D interview series, Dread Central briefly chatted with one of the film's co-stars and newcomer to the genre world, Scott Eastwood.

An up-and-coming actor who recently appeared in Trouble with the Curve (starring his father, Clint Eastwood) and Chasing Mavericks, Eastwood plays a small-town deputy named Carl who has designs on the new girl in town, Heather Miller (Alexandra Daddario), who has just inherited a mansion and a mysterious house guest in his jurisdiction.

Dread Central: It's really hard to talk about your character without revealing too much but can you try to, in your own way, sum up Carl for the fans out there who want to know more about how he fits into the world of Texas Chainsaw 3D?

Scott Eastwood:What I like about Carl is that he's a wild card; you don't really know just how he fits in this world but you know there's something there- whether it's the attraction between him and Alex's character or whatever- but there's something to his dynamic where you're just not sure whether or you love him or hate him. I liked that.

Dread Central: Because this is your first horror movie and the fact that fan expectation is high, were you ever hesitant at all about coming on board this movie- or rather, what convinced you to want to be a part of this project in particular?

Scott Eastwood:You know, at first I said no; I didn't even read the script. I immediately said to myself, 'Oh here's another studio remaking something,' and then I read the script and saw what the filmmakers were REALLY doing. The script was really good; it was 90 pages and had a really nice pace to it. It also turned out to be very story-driven with this weird and creepy dynamic to it which I really liked, too.

So I met with John (Luessenhop), the director, and he sold me on the project. He wanted to make this little character-driven horror movie that wasn't just your average, stock horror movie either. So then he asked me to play this small town deputy and I was down.

Dread Central: And John's approach also feels a bit different too- he seems to be a very 'action-oriented' director. Was that style something you were conscientious of when you guys were making Texas Chainsaw 3D?

Scott Eastwood:Oh yeah; I had seen Takers and I really liked it. I thought the action sequences were really well done, and I think John's got a really different approach to shooting action where it doesn't feel like anything you see going on right now in action movies. He really excels in that field, and sure, I was conscientious of it while shooting because there was a lot of action going on in this.

Dread Central: Since this was your first foray into horror, do you feel like you'd like to do more genre projects in the future then?

Scott Eastwood:You know, it all depends on story. If the story's great, I'm not opposed to any movie. Thriller, horror, comedy- if the story is great, then I'm in.

Over the weekend one of the producers of the upcoming Hellsing adaptation contacted us and a bunch of other sites with the news that director David S. Goyer would be at the film's helm. There's just one problem...

"I woke up this morning to find a bunch of sites claiming I am attached to direct a film based on the anime HELLSING," says Goyer via his website. "The only problem is, it’s complete bullshit. I’ve never read the anime, nor have I ever been contacted by any of the people involved in the film. Normally, I wouldn’t bother commenting on a rumor — there are so many flooding the web each month, week, day, that it would be pointless. Most of them are just annoying. But in this case, where someone is apparently trying to promote their own interests by fraudulently claiming I am associated with a project, I take issue with that."

In last week’s Dragon’s Call II server maintenance, two new systems were added: Colosseum and Lvl 100 Map : Frontier of Chaos.

Colosseum, a brand-new PVE system, provides a new way for players to acquire Reputation and Honor. Players can enter Colosseum to challenge those powerful bosses once Level reaches 15. Some may be familiar with powerful bosses as fellows or enemies; however, they are now demonized by the evil Demon and are endowed with the evil power of the Demon.

Land of Chaos, on the southwest of Pandar Prairie, is full of disorder and weird creatures which are beyond description. The enemies there are more powerful than those in Tribe Camp. Dragon Soul, also called Soul of Great Dragon, contains enormous energy according to the Tribe legend. Dragon Soul hides itself on Land of Chaos.

EPX Games announces that Night Whisper Lane is coming out for the Android platform on Tuesday, January 1st, 2013. We have received many requests from gamers for an Android version of Night Whisper Lane. You spoke, we listened.

Night Whisper Lane is the first authentic Survival Horror gaming experience specifically designed for iOS that merges classic “Point and Click” gameplay with a “Turn-Based Battle System” to help you fend off whatever evil awaits you in this seemingly endless labyrinth.

You find yourself in presence of an old ominous house without the faintest idea of how you got there; yet, you feel drawn to it and are compelled to enter. WARNING/DANGER: There are many hidden traps and deadly encounters on your journey that can and will kill your character! Be mindful of what you interact with as you look for items to solve puzzles and unlock doors & passages. Weapons & ammunition are scarce so keep an eye out for them and manage them wisely because fighting empty-handed is certain death. There are several "zombify yourself" photo apps out there, but in early January AMC's new "Dead Yourself" app arrives, fully sanctioned by "The Walking Dead." Check out what the Governor (David Morrissey) himself might look like undead.

TV Guide provided this first look at the app, which will be available at DeadYourself.com beginning January 7th. It will allow fans to zombify photos of themselves and others — complete with rotting teeth and flesh. And that's not all...

When the show resumes on February 10th, new episodes will reveal a special code that fans can use to unlock a fresh zombie part, which they can then incorporate into their ghoulish creations.

There's just something so very iconic about imagery involving a giant beast atop a building with jets and helicopters waging war against it. That's just what we have here in this latest image from Mike Mendez's (The Convent, The Gravedancers) Mega Spider. Dig it!

Battling the beast are Greg Grunberg ("Heroes", "Alias") and Lombardo Boyar ("The Bernie Mac Show"), who star as Alex, an exterminator, and Jose, his security guard sidekick, respectively. The unlikely heroes team up with an elite military unit that includes genre vets Clare Kramer (The Gravedancers) and Ray Wise (X-Men: First Class, "Twin Peaks").

Mendez explains what drew him to the project: "The script was hilarious, and as we got into the creature design and the casting, we had one objective in mind: fun! I love the tone of this movie and think audiences are going to have a wild time.”

Synopsis
Surviving extermination by nuclear eradication, a horrible alien mutation in arachnid form is now growing at an exponential rate and making its way toward downtown Los Angeles. Hot on its spindly heels is a crack military unit with absolute authority, led by an obsessively driven commander and his beautiful but lethal sidekick. Unfortunately for them, this mutant spider has an array of deadly defenses including the ability to virtually disappear through camouflage. But the creature’s real adversary quickly turns out to be a hot-shot local exterminator armed only with cocky attitude, some fast one-liners and his homemade gadgets. Joining forces with the military team, this blue-collar hero sets out to exterminate what has now become a monstrous 10-story tall MEGA SPIDER.

Though it was a pretty good year for movies, 2012 has for the most part sucked. False raptures, non-existent Armageddons, Norm MacDonald's Vampire Dog... enough already! It's with great pleasure that we give this year the proverbial finger and officially look forward to lucky '13!

There has been some good, though. We got ourselves a televised segment on the Travel Channel show "Paranormal Paparazzi," and we've grown as a site exponentially. This was all in no small part to you cats, whom we are extremely grateful for. You keep readin', we'll keep writin'! 2013 is looking pretty good horror-wise what with titles like Mama, The Conjuring, Carrie, Evil Dead and much, much more on the horizon, and you can be sure we'll be right here dishing out the good, the bad, and of course the ugly.

So goodbye, 2012! Don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out! Be safe tonight, everyone, and have a happy and healthy 2013! Here's to ya!
