Exclusive Set Report and Photos: Dread Central Spends Easter with LazarusIt seemed rather fitting that we hit the set of writer, director and producer Thomas J. Churchill’s ambitious zombie feature Lazarus on Easter Sunday, and we’re glad we did.

Battling the throngs of Sunday worshippers who’d clogged Los Angeles’ concrete arteries for Hollywood Bowl’s Easter Mass, we made our way to Tarzana, CA, where filmmaker Churchill had set up shop at Waggin’ Tails Lounge, a dog grooming facility owned by his cousin, Kathie Fiorillo. Shooting day twelve of thirteen on the Canon 5D, Churchill was prepping a scene which would feature the re-animation of the dead, and while it may be poised to enter the already bloated sub-genre of independent zombie cinema, readers, do please take note: Lazarus seems to be hell-bent on offering an entirely fresh take.

Set in Hollywood 1957, Lazarus revolves around the character of George Lazarus (Ray Capuana), an insurance investigator who schedules routine interviews with twelve employees of the Deadly Sin Cigarette Company, upon the receipt of a rather suspicious insurance claim. In the process he learns that all twelve had recently been fired for being sick at the job, and then subsequently and without a trace, he disappears. Two weeks later, with Lazarus now a missing person, his heart-sick fiancée Bethany Loomis (Natalie Victoria), along with Chip (Kevin Franklin) undertakes the task of finding him, and in retracing his steps she learns that what was initially regarded as a simple fraud investigation case may actually be the beginning of the end of the human race.

Produced by Churchill and David M. Parks with cinematography by Wolfgang Meyer, Lazarus additionally stars Stephen Geoffreys (Fright Night), Brooke Lewis (iMurders), Josh Hammond (Jeepers Creepers 2), James Duval (Sushi Girl), Brian Andrews (Halloween), Janet Tracy Keijser (House on Haunted Hill), Kenneth J. Hall (The Puppet Master), Krista Grotte and Taylor Morgan Lewis. Roy Knyrim’s SOTA FX provides the special effects, with Clayton Brickert and Robert Giddens assisting.

“I wrote the script in a week,” Churchill told us of Lazarus, as he screened some film noir’esque eye candy footage from the same on his laptop.

“I had some time before Hallow Pointe goes into production,” the filmmaker said of the werewolf flick he’s producing, which is set to lens this August, “and my producing partner thought we should shoot something. He suggested a vampire film and then a zombie film, and the zombie thing has been done to death. But when he asked me how I would approach it, I said, ‘Let’s make it a Hollywood period piece. It will be in black and white. We’ll make it a loose prequel to Romero’s Night of the Living Dead since that film is public domain, in a world where no one has ever heard of a zombie before.’ In fact, the character of Chip is actually intended as the nephew of Night of the Living Dead’s character of Ben. ‘And we’ll make it very Hitchcock.’”

There’s more narrative cleverness at play here too, and while not intended as heavy-handed, Churchill also wove in the devil (the character of ‘Mammom Beelzebub,’ the president of the Deadly Sin Cigarette Company, which he portrays), as well as characters possessing the biblical names of ‘Caine’ and ‘Abel,’ and direct homage to the works of Hitchcock, which clearly have influenced the Queens, NY-born filmmaker (he was wearing a Hitch shirt the day of our visit, whilst smoking a Cuban cigar).

As for recreating the look and feel of the 1950’s on a limited budget, it would appear from the footage which he screened that Churchill has succeeded wildly, in not only set design and props (it all looks quite authentic), but also in casting.

“I wanted the character of Bethany to basically be Grace Kelly,” said Churchill of his intended casting, “and Natalie Victoria was referred to me by Brooke (Lewis). She came in for an audition, and while I had other actresses I’d promised to audition, I knew from my first meeting with Natalie that she was our Bethany. She has an incredible look and is so talented.”

Chatting with Victoria, who portrayed the love interest in the Pierce brothers’ 2011 horror zom-com DeadHeads and who will next be seen in director Hank Braxtan’s horror flick Chemical Peel, the actress stated of what attracted her to Lazarus,“I loved the idea of shooting a film that was a cross between a Hitchcock thriller and the classic Night of the Living Dead. Plus, I've always wanted to shoot a film set in the 1950s, so that was also a huge draw!”

As for what she did to prepare for the period piece, “Google! I researched the era's fashion, style, hair, classic commercials, and I pulled up a few Hitchcock movies like Rear Window and North by Northwest,” Victoria offered. “I wanted to make sure that I captured the ‘naivety’ and simple beauty of that era, pre-Internet.”

Regarding her experience on Lazarus (she’d wrapped the day prior), “It was very smooth,” she said. “The team is great and relaxed and knows what they are aiming for. Tom has a clear vision, which really is wonderful for actors to tune in to, and my fellow actors Ray and Kevin were a joy to work with, and they always came ready to try something new.”

Her enthusiasm is perhaps unsurprising, given the buzz on set regarding Victoria’s chemistry with Franklin.

“Kevin (Franklin) and I rehearsed a lot together,” reflected the actress, “which always helps, and we really got on well off and on screen. He's a pro, and so natural in his delivery that we were always trying new stuff to add a new spin to a performance or a take. Acting with Kevin is easy. He's great! Just beware about falling asleep on set around him. He loved taking pictures of me when I cat-napped after a meatball dinner break.”

As for her working relationship with director Churchill, Victoria concluded, “Tom is terrific! Talk about a guy who really is genuine and full of laughs. His personality is so fun on set and really puts everyone at ease. As a director, he had such a clear vision of exactly what he wanted, down to set details, that as an actor he made it easy to jump into a character and tweak performances with his guidance. I remember one scene from the end of the film was really emotional, and he just knew all the right things to say to me before the takes to aid me in giving the best performance possible. I'd definitely love to work with him again!”

Synopsis:
It is the year 1957 in Hollywood, CA. A telegram arrives at the office of George Lazarus, an insurance investigator with the assignment to look into a suspicious claim that was just put in by Harvest International Tobacco Company. Lazarus begins to schedule routine interviews with the twelve employees that are named on this claim. He learns that they all had just gotten fired for being sick at the job. He never makes it back to the office. What seemed to be a normal fraud investigation case may have turned out to be the beginning of the end for the human race. His fiancee, Bethany, begins to worry as she realizes that he hasn't been back at the office since early that morning and he hasn't checked in either. Not the behavior from a man who lives by daily routine. She decides to follow his path in hopes of locating him. Nothing can prepare her for what she is about to witness in this eerily horrific pre-apocalyptic tale.

New Room 237 Artwork Explores the Brain of Stanley KubrickAnother cool (and extremely yellow) poster has arrived for Rodney Ascher's controversial documentary on Stanley Kubrick's The Shining entitled Room 237, and we have it for ya hot, fresh, and full of twists and turns!

From the Press Release
IFC Midnight is proud to present Rodney Ascher's highly acclaimed ROOM 237, which was released on March 29, 2013, in New York City, followed by a national rollout. The film is simultaneously available on Cable VOD, iTunes, and other digital outlets (Sundance Now, Amazon Streaming, Xbox, and more).

Since its premiere at Sundance, Room 237 had been a festival sensation at Cannes, Toronto, New York, Chicago, AFI, and Fantastic Fest. The film also won the IDA Documentary Award for Best Editing.

Synopsis
After the box office failure of Barry Lyndon, Stanley Kubrick decided to embark on a project that might have more commercial appeal. The Shining, Stephen King’s biggest critical and commercial success yet, seemed like a perfect vehicle. After an arduous production, Kubrick’s film received a wide release in the summer of 1980; the reviews were mixed, but the box office, after a slow start, eventually picked up. End of story? Hardly. In the 30 years since the film’s release, a considerable cult of Shining devotees has emerged, fans who claim to have decoded the film’s secret messages addressing everything from the genocide of Native Americans to a range of government conspiracies. Rodney Ascher’s wry and provocative Room 237 fuses fact and fiction through interviews with cultists and scholars, creating a kaleidoscopic deconstruction of Kubrick’s still controversial classic.

While the da Vinci depicted in the history books was renowned for his works of art and inventions that included the calculator, army tank, diving suit, solar power, and many more, “Da Vinci’s Demon’s” depicts a 25-year-old da Vinci (portrayed by Tom Riley, Return to House on Haunted Hill, "Bedlam") on the cusp of greatness, with intellect and talents that are almost superhuman. In the series he struggles to live within the confines of his own reality and time, tortured by his unsurpassed intellect. He begins to not only see the future, but invent it.

The series also stars Laura Haddock (“Honest,” Captain America: The First Avenger), who plays the celebrated beauty with obscure motives, Lucrezia Donati; Elliot Cowan (“Marchlands,” “The Fixer,” “Lost in Austen”), who plays the shrewd de facto ruler of Florence, Lorenzo Medici; Lara Pulver (“True Blood,” “Sherlock,” “Robin Hood”), who plays his wife, Clarice Orsini; and Blake Ritson (RocknRolla, Titus, “World Without End”) as Pope Sixtus’ ruthless bastard son, Count Riario.

David S. Goyer, known for co-writing The Dark Knight trilogy, the upcoming Man of Steel, and serving as story editor for Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops II, the most successful video game franchise of all time, also served as showrunner on “Da Vinci’s Demons” and directed the first two episodes.

After its premiere on Friday, April 12th, at 10pm ET/PT, following the finale of “Spartacus: War of the Damned,” “Da Vinci’s Demons” will air Friday nights at 9pm ET/PT on Starz.

Synopsis:
In a world where thought and faith are controlled, one man fights to set knowledge free.

The secret history of Leonardo da Vinci's tantalizing life reveals a portrait of a young man tortured by a gift of superhuman genius. He is a heretic intent on exposing the lies of religion. An insurgent seeking to subvert an elitist society. A bastard son who yearns for legitimacy with his father.

He finds himself in the midst of a storm that has been brewing for centuries. A conflict between truth and lies, religion and reason, past and future. His aspirations are used against him by the opposing forces of the time—luring him into a game of seduction where those who despise his intellect need him most. Leonardo must take up the fight against foes who use history to suppress the truth. A hero armed only with genius, da Vinci stands alone against the darkness within, and the darkness without.

Facing an uncertain future, his quest for knowledge nearly becomes his undoing as he explores the fringes of his own sanity. Da Vinci throws himself into his genius and emerges as an unstoppable force that lifts an entire era out of darkness and propels it into light. His story becomes a mirror into our own world, calling us all to join his fight to Free the Future.

Another Look Inside The Walking Dead Season 3 Finale and a Tease of What's Ahead in Season 4

Another Look Inside The Walking Dead Season 3 Finale and a Tease of What's Ahead in Season 4We're not quite ready to close the door on Season 3 of "The Walking Dead", and AMC isn't either as they've just released another making-of video that takes us inside the prison assault along with a look ahead at Season 4 with the cast and crew.

We also have the best moments from the season finale of "Talking Dead," in which Chris Hardwick discusses "Welcome to the Tombs" with guests Chad L. Coleman (Tyreese), Yvette Nicole Brown, and Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon), along with a few tidbits from TV Guide's recent interview with The Walking Dead comics creator Robert Kirkman, who's also an executive producer on the TV series. Be sure to hit the link at the bottom of the page for the whole thing, and look for "The Walking Dead" to return for Season 4 on AMC in October.

Why kill off Andrea now? She's still around in the comics!
Kirkman:
The unfortunate thing about the way these things work is that we're not really going to see the effects or the results of that death until we come back for Season 4. It's going to have very interesting effects on all of the characters, especially on Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and how he operates moving forward. [That's] going to be one of the big changes for next season.

Do you worry about alienating fans of the comics when you make such big changes?
Kirkman:
No. I think fans of the comics recognize that this show is a different animal... We are still very much following the path of the comic book, and you'll see a lot of that in Season 4... I think it's cool that there are differences that are going to make the show as dramatic, startling, and unpredictable as the comic book was the first time you read it. That's really what we're going after.

Will the dynamic change now that the group has gotten even larger?
Kirkman:
A large group brings with it a need for more resources, but also more assets within the group. They could also, theoretically, accomplish more. There's a lot to be done with these people in Season 4.

What will the role of The Governor be in Season 4?
Kirkman:
That will have to remain shrouded in mystery for the time being. But I will say it's going to be very different. We have The Governor, we have Rick, we have the prison. These are elements from Season 3, but everything is going to be radically changed and radically different in some very cool ways. I wouldn't expect the same conflict or the same stories coming into Season 4. Things are going to be evolving quite a bit between seasons.

What kind of threat will the group be facing next season?
Kirkman: Walkers are definitely still going to be in the mix, [but] this question is more than likely going to have to wait for a few months until we're more ready to talk about Season 4. But we advanced things in the third season to where humans were a more present threat than the zombies, and that may continue into Season 4... We'll see a lot of new elements and a lot of new places. The prison is still going to be present, but maybe not in the way people expect.

What about character interactions? Michonne and Rick? And what about Daryl?
Kirkman:
[Michonne and Rick] have a tremendously close relationship in the comic book series, [and] we're on the road towards building that in the show. I think we can expect these two characters to be working together a lot more in the future. It's entirely possible that we may see Daryl emerge in [more of] a leadership role than he had this season. [As for Carl] Rick's got his work cut out for him... which is a very big part of Season 4.

Any hints of how the show will be different with Scott Gimple as showrunner?
Kirkman:
Scott has really been pushing, and he's going to take charge of, making sure...every character has big moments — to really amp up the character development... getting to know the characters more and teasing a little bit more emotion into the stories is what we're striving to do in Season 4... We all recognize that it's important to have lighter moments in the show, and I think that Season 4 will definitely have a few of those. Not too many, but a few of those from time to time.

"The Walking Dead" Episode 3.16 - "Welcome to the Tombs" (aired 3/31/13)
Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the group have to seriously consider if the prison is worth defending as the Governor's (David Morrissey) impending attack looms over their heads. Written by Glen Mazzara; directed by Ernest Dickerson.

After Dylan tried out wearing his new gun, he found Norma and Norman at the kitchen table. When Norma asked him to sign for some deliveries that day, he retorted that he had a job but wouldn't tell them what.

At school, Emma came up to Norman, terrified about their pot field discoveries. She also felt guilty about using the grave finding excursion as an excuse to get Norman to hang out with her. She didn't believe the story in the picture book journal until she saw the shed. Now she felt she had to do something for the dead girl and she couldn't forget about it. Norman wanted the journal back, stating it was pornographic and that they were in school and even accused Emma of being obsessed with it. When she said she found it in his room, Norman got a little flustered and passive-aggressively denied his obsession very Anthony Perkins-like and stormed off.

In the classroom, Norman couldn't stop thinking about the journal and imagining the test was the journal. When Miss Watson asked him what was wrong, he started thinking about her bound like the girl in the journal before he fainted in her arms.

At the emergency room, Norma asked the doctor about the tests he was prescribing. When he asked if Norman had a history of blacking out, she got defensive and insisted not.

Bates Motel: Recap of Episode 1.03 - What's Wrong With Norman? - Norman & Norma

Dylan drove with his new henchman buddy, Ethan, into the middle of the woods. After they've stopped, they camouflaged their truck before hiking off. The henchman brought them to a large pot field. All of a sudden, some gunmen accosted them and Dylan tried to react but was stopped by Ethan. Dylan and Ethan traded shifts with the previous pair and were being paid $300 a day for watching over things.

While waiting for the test results at the hospital, Norman watched TV with Norma when she got a call about her appointment. Norman insisted that she go attend to that errand. As Norma rushed out, Bradley came to visit Norman with a flowering plant. She wanted to thank him for trying to visit her at the hospital before. Her father may not survive, and when she found out about Norman's losing his dad, they bonded. She then climbed into the bed with Norman to watch the old black and white movie together. "You just want to be happy," she blurted as a somewhat bewildered but amused Norman looked on.

When Norma was tending to the carpet people, she got interrupted by Sheriff Romero serving her a search warrant. When Norma returned to the hospital, she found the doctor with Norman about to tell them that the tests came back negative. The doctor also wanted to keep Norman overnight for observation. After he had left, Norma insisted that they go home. When a nurse tried to stop her, Norma almost bit her head off.

On the way out, she told Norman all about the police at their property and that she was worried about their searching. During the conversation, we could now see where he got his passive-aggressiveness from. When Norman found out the police didn't take anything out, he was not concerned anymore. The moment he got home, he ran to look under the bed. When it wasn't there, Norman got upset with himself.

In tears, Norman confessed to Norma that he took Keith's belt when they moved the body and he didn't know where the belt was. He had hidden it under his bed. Norma asked why he would take the belt but all he could utter was, "I don't know." Norma didn't think the police had found anything because otherwise they would have said something.

At the pot field, Dylan learned more about the field's ownership, Bradley's dad who was burned at the warehouse, and even the hanging burning guy at the yardarm. After they were startled by some birds in the bushes, Dylan took Ethan on a pheasant hunt.

Emma came to visit Norman and convinced him to research the journal some more. Norman even brought her to the room where he found the book. When Emma tried to describe the previous owner's creepiness, Norman got a text message from Bradley about sharing custody of their plant. He smiled and Emma noticed, but that didn't stop her from continuing to look around. She found some characters under the sink and insisted that the girl from the journal was in that room before.

Norma found Deputy Shelby on the road side and tried to pry some information from him. He told Norma instead that they should talk later during dinner at his place. He'll tell her what she wanted to know and told her not to worry.

Back home, Norma explained to Norman that she was going to see Deputy Shelby that evening to find out if he knew about the belt.

Bates Motel: Recap of Episode 1.03 - What's Wrong With Norman? - Norma & Zack

Norma arrived at Deputy Shelby's all decked out, ready for her information gathering. During drinks, she started to ask about what was going on, but the deputy turned it on Norma to talk about the belt. The deputy found the belt and took it without anyone, including the sheriff, knowing it. He asked her outright if Norman killed Keith and she denied it. Then he started to seduce her.

Enjoying the spoils of their hunt, Dylan told Ethan more about his family, ingeniously cluing us, the audience, in on the Bates family's back story. Ethan was surprised Dylan didn't know where his mother was from.

At home, Dylan found Norman on the couch and had a conversation about their mother and how Norman needed to get out more. They even bonded over their screwed up family and Norman trying to kill Dylan the other night.

Norma came home and found Norman sleeping on her bed. Waking him up, she told him that the deputy had the belt and was going to protect them now. Norman did not like that but Norma insisted that they were fine. When she asked Norman why he kept the belt, he confessed that he wanted to keep mementos. When they hugged, Norman smiled creepily.

At school, Norman approached Bradley but was interrupted by Emma. Emma wanted them to tell the police about her findings and the journal. Norman refused and that sparked something in Norman and he got progressively angrier and angrier before he stopped himself and apologized.

In his room, Norma told Norman that as long as the deputy had the belt, he'd have control of them. Norman now knew what he had to do. He had to go get the belt. Norma wasn't there. Norman was talking to an imaginary figure. In the dead of night, Norman walked to Deputy Shelby's house alone.

Having made his way inside Deputy Shelby's house, Norman searched extensively and found a large bunch of keys. After escaping from his tussle with a dog, Norman unlocked the basement door and went down. He found a video setup and another room. Inside that room, he found an unconscious Chinese girl with bruises. When she woke, she grabbed his arm and asked for help.

Outside, Deputy Shelby arrived home and entered the house.

What happens next? Was the captive in the basement real or do you think Norman imagined it? It couldn't be such a coincidence, could it? Tell us what you think in the comments below.

New Trailer Details the Errors of the Human BodyWhile we wait for IFC Midnight to release Eron Sheean's indie thriller Errors of the Human Body here in the States, we've managed to dig our claws into a new trailer for you cats to dig on!

Errors of the Human Body opens in select theaters on April 19th and will be available to watch on Cable VOD, SundanceNOW and other digital outlets (iTunes, Amazon Streaming, PS3 Playstation Unlimited, XBOX Zune, Google PLAY and YouTube).

From the Press Release
IFC Midnight has acquired all North American rights to Eron Sheean’s thriller ERRORS OF THE HUMAN BODY. Sheean wrote the screenplay for the film with Shane Danielsen. The picture stars Germany’s Karoline Herfurth (PERFUME: THE STORY OF A MURDERER, THE READER, WE ARE THE NIGHT), Iceland’s Tómas Lemarquis (NOI THE ALBINO, PAINLESS, SNOW PIERCER), Rik Mayall (THE YOUNG ONES), and Canada’s rising star Michael Eklund (THE DIVIDE, THE DAY, FRINGE, ALCATRAZ) and was produced by Instinctive Film’s Darryn Welch and Cole Payne.

Following a divorce from his wife and the loss of his son to a rare genetic mutation, Canadian geneticist Geoff Burton (Elkund) relocates to the harsh, wintry scenery of Dresden, Germany, to work on a groundbreaking new project that might just be his key to redemption. When teamed up with his former intern and colleague Rebekka (Herfurth), he starts working on a human regenerative gene with direct ties to his personal tragedy; yet, matters prove increasingly difficult: Jealous co-workers’ feelings are ruffled, old flames are rekindled, and personal demons become consistently harder to suppress in this new and oppressive work environment.

Still haunted by the memory of his wife and his failures to save his deceased son, Burton finds himself maddeningly close to a medical breakthrough, yet quickly spiraling out of control. Collapsing his career and personal life into a dark and increasingly dangerous tunnel-vision of competitive genetics, delusions of all kinds, and the terrifying potential of massive discoveries gone awry, Burton is quite literally the stranger in the strange land. The question remains: How far will Burton be willing to go to atone for the errors of his past?

Hannibal Series Preview: Who's the Smartest Man in the Room?

Hannibal Series Preview: Who's the Smartest Man in the Room? For the first time this iconic character firmly established in the universe of fiction and film displays his talents on the small screen. He has been portrayed in numerous adaptations over four decades, and a new face now steps into the limelight, one sure to add to his mythology and legacy...

No, I’m not talking about Hannibal Lecter; I’m talking about Will Graham. Hugh Dancy plays the tortured profiler this go-around, and NBC’s new show “Hannibal” plans on convincing you that he’s the character really worth tuning in for.

In a nutshell, “Hannibal” is a raw, intellectual procedural following Will and Hannibal as they track a different serial killer each week (Eddie Izzard, for example, appears in an upcoming episode as the Chesapeake Ripper, who originally appeared in the novel Red Dragon). Through the course of their investigations, you slowly find out more about Hannibal through Will's findings and theories about the killer they seek. Then Hannibal, as Will’s oddly engaging therapist, discusses the emotional effects of the case while dealing with the usually violent conclusion at the end of each episode.

Hannibal in the early episodes is the compass of the show, making sense and moralizing why it feels good to kill - it feels powerful. Will has the ability to relive the murders in a way no one else can, and it tortures him. As the show progresses through the five episodes we’ve seen, the question is whether or not Will begins to enjoy the intense visions he experiences because he gets to imagine himself on a murderous, glorious rampage. Does Will have the desire to kill, too? But the biggest question to answer is who is the most interesting character? Should it be Will or Hannibal? In the first episode, “Apertif,” Will insists, "You wouldn't like me when I'm psycho-analyzing," an obvious reference to The Incredible Hulk. Is he dangerous? Right off the bat, Will is more unstable than Hannibal.

Or should the relationship between the two leads be the thing we care about the most? Mads Mikkelson is absolutely delectable as Lecter, but it’s not because of how he slices, dices and dines. In The Silence of the Lambs, you care about Clarice, right? Lecter, in their relationship, scares her and challenges her in a way that no one ever could. He understands her like no one ever has. She reveals more to him than she ever would a lover. But Lecter ultimately serves a purpose: to aid Clarice in not only catching the killer and becoming a full-fledged agent but also to exorcise her demons and give her the courage to fight the sexism of the FBI and her sad past. Then she can use that courage to fight the bad guys. Admittedly, it might be difficult to care about Will Graham more than Clarice Starling. But if we do, Mads Mikkelson’s Hannibal will help us get there. You care about Clarice because you see her overcome her fear and her past, and then you can’t really help but like Lecter since he’s the catalyst. In “Hannibal” Lecter is also that catalyst for Will, but in a more loving, less invasive way. Let’s just say it’s a very close professional relationship. Ultimately, Hannibal just wants someone to understand him.

Related Story:Exclusive Interview: Mads Mikkelson on "Hannibal"

The key to viewers continuing to tune in is giving Hannibal plenty of compelling screen time early on so the audience stays with the show long enough to care about Will. The early episodes are on their way to accomplish that, but it’s not until Episode Five, where we see a flashback of one of his kills, that we are compelled to keep watching solely because of Hannibal. Hannibal is very direct, and his seeming omnipotence provides comfort and makes Will, Agent Jack Crawford and others respond to him openly. That makes him the most important character because he makes the other characters more accessible and therefore more engaging.

Hannibal Series Preview: Who's the Smartest Man in the Room?Lastly, the character of Hannibal could be jeopardized if too much is revealed about his past, but interestingly, finding more and more about Will enriches his character. That’s how the show will succeed: by making the audience care more about Will than they do about Hannibal, a feat that has not been accomplished before in the books or the films. We did care about Clarice more, didn’t we? Hannibal should be the most interesting character but not the character we want to find out about the most.

Episode by episode, we're learning about other serial killers through Will so we don't sympathize with the killers. We would prefer to learn more about Hannibal, initially. But the writers are pulling a trick here: If the focus is on other serial killers and that focus is more on method than motive, the less that needs to be revealed about Hannibal, keeping his background and motivations secret to retain his appeal. Hannibal just sees the world in a different way than us. So do these other serial killers but not as clearly as he does. There is no line for him, which is why he sees beauty in killing. He is pure in this way, and Hannibal must stay mysterious for the show to work long-term.

As mentioned, each episode is about a different serial killer, but our insight into the killer is only through Will, who has an intrinsic understanding of their motives. Does this bring us closer to Will or distance us from him because of his ability and eccentricity? Maybe we don’t want to be too close to Will and Hannibal because they’re a little off-putting, to say the least. If early episodes are clear indications, surprisingly, Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne) may wind up being the emotional center of “Hannibal.”

Obviously, having these interesting characters on television means you can think about their motivations and discuss them even more than before, if you so desire. Usually shows like “House” or “Sherlock” are compelling mostly because the lead character is always the smartest man in the room. “Hannibal” gives you two such characters, and the compelling thing is guessing which one of them is smarter.

Be sure to watch the "Hannibal" series premiere on April 4th at 10pm on NBC, and then come back here to share your thoughts on the show.

"Hannibal" Episode 1.01 - "Aperitif" (airs 4/4/13)
When the FBI takes on a case of disappearing college girls, Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne) recruits Will Graham (Hugh Dancy), a gifted criminal profiler with a unique view into the psyche of serial killers, to consult. Jack also seeks the help of Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen), a brilliant psychiatrist, who, unbeknownst to him, is not only one of the most successful serial killers of all time, but also a cannibal. After a copycat strikes, Will and Hannibal join forces to track down the culprit.
