Scream Factory Does a Double Shot of Carrie

The Scream Factory’s barrage of release news continues today with the announcement of yet another double feature, this time with a raging telekinetic twist! Carrie is coming home… again!

From The Scream Factory on Facebook
Our month-long “Shocktober” celebration continues with two more films to reveal: CARRIE – the 2002 TV-movie remake of Stephen King’s timeless tale of telekinetic revenge which stars Angela Bettis – and THE RAGE: CARRIE II – the 1999 theatrical sequel to Brian De Palma’s original 1976 masterpiece which stars Amy Irving – will make their debut on the Blu-ray format next spring as a double-feature.

There are no details on extras at this time, and if any are planned, they will be announced sometime next year along with a confirmed street date.

On a relevant side note (and in case you were wondering): We did try to acquire the Sissy Spacek classic last year in the hopes of doing a “Collector’s Edition” version and a new transfer, but it did not pan out for various reasons. We can’t get them all.

We still have more films to announce in the next couple of weeks so stay tuned this month here on our page to be the first to see them!

We hit the black carpet last evening in Hollywood, CA, for the Screamfest World Premiere of director Jack Heller’s feature film Dark Was the Night and brought back a photo gallery from the event. Read on!

With the 14th Annual Screamfest Horror Film Festival currently under way at the TCL Chinese 6 Theatres in Hollywood, CA, Heller’s feature debuted to a packed and vocally enthusiastic audience, who buzzed about the film following the screening.

In attendance were director Heller, writer Tyler Hisel, and Dark Was the Night cast members Kevin Durand (“The Strain”), Bianca Kajlich (Halloween: Resurrection), Sabina Gadecki, Billy Paterson, and Heath Freeman (“Bones”). Film legend Lance Henriksen (Aliens, Near Dark) too made an appearance, as did Kevin Connolly of “Entourage” fame.

Produced by Heller, Dallas Sonnier, Stefan Nowicki, Dylan K. Narang, and Joey Carey, Dark Was the Night revolves around (according to the official synopsis) “a long slumbering evil (which) is awoken in the trees, outside the remote town of Maiden Woods. Isolated and threatened, it sets its sites on the townspeople as Sheriff Paul Shields attempts to overcome the demons of his past so that he may protect those that he loves.”

It’s a taut, well crafted, and acted film so distribution shouldn’t be far off for this one (check out the trailer below).

Not to rest on his laurels, Heller is currently hard at work producing the now shooting Western Bone Tomahawk, which stars Kurt Russell (The Thing), Patrick Wilson (The Conjuring), Sean Young (Blade Runner), David Arquette (Scream), Matthew Fox (World War Z), and Sid Haig (The Devil’s Rejects), which the filmmaker promised to be “a bloody thrill ride.”

Additionally on hand for the festival’s following Short Film Block was Naked Zombie Girl writer and director Rickey Bird along with his leading lady, Meghan Chadeayne, an assortment of cast and crew, and a couple of rather believable zombies that shambled on the carpet.

For tickets to the festival, which runs to the 23rd, visit Screamfest here, and for more on Dark Was the Night, check out their official site here, “like” them on Facebook here, and follow them on Twitter @dwtnmovie. Naked Zombie Girl can be visited here.

Red Nights (DVD)

Red NightsStarring Frédérique Bel, Carrie Ng, Carole Brana

Directed by Julien Carbon and Laurent Courtiaud

Distributed by Breaking Glass Pictures

In true giallo fashion, Red Nights is a truly international film with a mixed cast and crew and three different places of production – Hong Kong, France, and Belgium.

Directed by a team of men (Julien Carbon and Laurent Courtiaud) and starring three strong women (Carrie Ng, Fréderique Bel, and Carole Brana), Red Nights is a beautiful, colorful journey into very dark territory. Pleasure and pain blur in an erotic torture chamber where the bad and the good are punished just the same. There’s an art nouveau flair to the rooms that entomb the doomed, while black gloves and jade finger-claws dole out the sex and death.

The crime-thriller aspect of this modern giallo centers on the pursuit of a magical elixir. During the reign of the first emperor of China, a cunning sadist under his command concocted a potion that paralyzed its victims’ extremities, while increasing the sensitivity of their nerve endings tenfold. Doled out from a jade skull, this liquid could provoke sensations in infinite variations from soft caresses to cruel cuts. Legend has it the alchemist killed himself with his own poison, and the skull was never found. In spite of a curse that’s said to bring misfortune to all of those who possess it, there are still plenty who want to take that chance.

But it’s more about the slow burn than it is a crime caper. It delivers in the horror department, as far as not shying away from slow, torturous deaths at the jade-claw hands of Carrie (Ng). Cruel Carrie has stopped at nothing to possess the ancient treasure that surfaced in the hands of a mysterious blonde named Catherine (Frédérique Bel), and she’s eager to try it out on victims – willing and unwilling.

There’s plenty of erotic imagery here, including nods to various fetishes – vinyl violation, foot fixation, and some really wicked knife play and flay. While the film’s sleek exterior is all giallo, within its breast beats a Hostel heart. (Just imagine a mash-up between Sergio Martino and Takashi Miike!)

While the acting is all aces, it’s the look and feel of the film that’s the true star. The sexy score and breathy, beating-heart sound design is as arresting as French composer Seppuku Paradigm’s previous works for such films as Martyrs and Eden Log. (In fact, they won Best Score at Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival for Red Nights.) And if that’s not enough red for you, the movie was shot on the Red One, with luscious results from DP Man-Ching Ng (who has a number of martial arts films and hard-boiled crime thrillers under his belt).

While Red Nights does have its slow spots (more than a few… but such is the case in the giallo genre, more often than not – and we fans happily tolerate it), it’s well worth a look for that niche audience who appreciate a bit of beauty in their horror.

More Details on Upcoming Event Series Aquarius; MIPCOM Trailer Description; New Sales Art

MIPCOM 2014, an annual TV and entertainment market held in Cannes, France, ended recently, and a description of the trailer for NBC’s upcoming event series “Aquarius” that was shown there has hit the Net along with some pretty cool sales art and a few more details of what we can expect from the Manson Family “prequel” once it hits the airwaves.

Deadline chatted with exec producer Marty Adelstein and series creator John McNamara, who provided an in-depth look at the show’s development process and how they landed its star, David Duchovny, but what really caught our eye was the aforementioned description plus the following few tidbits:

While conceiving the project, McNamara “thought of this idea of an older cop during the 1960s and how a 45-year-old would see hippies. Then, what if he was paired with a Narc who is 22? That [concept] was three years of thinking for me. Then one day it came to me while I was in my garage: I need the guy who ruined the ‘60s to bring them together: Charles Manson.”

McNamara originally pitched the project as a quintet of novels to Adelstein, who convinced the writer otherwise. “I told John that he’s going to miss the music – it’s such a big part of the era,” said Adelstein.

“Aquarius” starts off by focusing on the early crimes of Manson – attempted murder, rape, arrested robbery – two years from the LaBianca-Tate murders. McNamara’s plan is to have each season cover six months of Manson’s life. “I know that the last season in the last episode will end with Manson in 1983,” he teased.

As for that still unreleased trailer, here’s the skinny: Los Angeles police sergeant Sam Hodiak (Duchovny) receives a phone call from a mother whose daughter is missing, lost in a sea of hippies. We see Hodiak submerging into a drug-infused orgy in the Hollywood Hills, and he wants to get physical. Says Brian Shafe, his undercover cop partner (played by Grey Damon), “I don’t want to be the bait so you can be bashing skulls.” We soon learn that the missing girl took off with a hairy, charismatic guy who strums a guitar.

Below is some artwork from ITV Studios Global Entertainment, the foreign distributor.  Look for lots more soon.

Synopsis
It’s 1967, and the era of free love, drug experimentation, and the Vietnam War is in full effect. When the teenage daughter of a respected lawyer goes missing, L.A. Police Sgt. Sam Hodiak (David Duchovny; “Californication,” “The X-Files”) starts asking around. He soon discovers that the hippie kids he’s questioning don’t take kindly to cops, especially one with hair as short as his. Needing the help of someone they will trust, he partners with rebellious undercover cop Brian Shafe, a man who’s more comfortable rolling a joint than patrolling a beat.

It’s not long before they stumble upon a small-time cult leader seeking out vulnerable women to join his cause. From there, they follow this man’s trail down a rabbit hole of drugs, sex, murder, and cultural revolution. Little could they know, however, the guy they’re hunting will eventually become the killer we now recognize as Charles Manson. He was a lost soul who desperately wanted to get into the music scene of the ’60s until something snapped. This is the show that will explore the cat and mouse game between him and the police that will go on for several seasons, ultimately ending with the infamous Tate-LaBianca murders.

Writer John McNamara (“In Plain Sight”) serves as executive producer with Marty Adelstein (“Prison Break”), David Duchovny, and Melanie Greene. “Aquarius” is a production of ITV Studios America and Marty Adelstein Productions.

Exists (2014)

ExistsStarring Brian Steele, Dora Madison Burge, Samuel Davis, Roger Edwards

Directed by Eduardo Sanchez

Distributed by Lionsgate

Like an all-you-can-eat buffet, the never ending rollout of found-footage horror continues to be put on display for the paying customer – and while some are like a four-star meal in both taste and appearance, some aren’t worth being shoved in a plastic bag and provided with a toy for added entertainment. However, there is a way to enjoy your meal and take solace in where it came from, and that way is to know your chef, or in this case, the director himself.

Eduardo Sanchez, the lead man who way back in 1999 (jeez, has it been that long)? literally scared millions out of their skivvies with the iconic woodsy-creepfest The Blair Witch Project, once again returns to his kitchen to deliver a moderately appetizing entrée of Sasquatch in Exists, a film that can both amuse and frighten at points but isn’t without its faults. While the look and feel of Sanchez’s style can definitely appeal to more than a few viewers, are we as a majority overwrought with the first-person POV? Let’s jump into the woods, and be sure to steer clear of any droppings.

The movie’s premise sets up fairly easily: A group of friends on their way to a relaxing weekend in the woods at a family member’s cabin are stalked by the infamous Bigfoot – easy enough? Well then, let’s progress – the five friends, who are set up in the traditional fashion (the good couple, the raunchy couple, and the tagalong stoner idiot), are all represented with the utmost candor. While it would be like beating a dead horse to get into each and every instance of the story here, I’m going to go with a bit of a different route, so let’s see what works and what doesn’t.

What we do know is that we have a group of friends that at times are rigged to the hilt with varying angles of GoPro cameras, all in the hopes of attaining some superior YouTube footage while mountain biking through the wooded masses. What has become tedious is the knowledge that no matter what peril one particular individual may be in at the time, those cameras will always be powered on, no matter what (these cameras also have enough battery power to push a small manned spacecraft back through re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere, apparently). The upside is that we don’t miss a whole hell of a lot when it comes to the hairy one’s multiple attacks.

The members of our group have apparently lost the ability to communicate with each other, as the words “shut up,” “bro,” and “fuck” are thrown around with titanic regularity (maybe perilous situations can cause the loss of intelligent dialogue?); however, these annoying actions to some are the perfect fodder for the sadistic soul when one of our beloved party gets manhandled by the 7-foot tall monster… and speaking of the monster, while there are a few decent distant shots of the beast, once we get a face-to-cam look at the one who has been wreaking havoc amongst our party pals, the appearance is far too costumed of a look, and the fright factor is immediately sucked out of the beast’s presentation. While we’re at it, the creature has somehow learned the art of psychological intimidation as well: At one point, when the lead character takes off on his bike to get help (the SUV they arrive in was trashed by the Sasquatch), he is pursued through the woods and knocked off his ride. The next shot we see is from a fixed GoPro on the porch of the cabin, which our lead’s bike is tossed onto in a fit of rage by the beast…so you’re telling me that the monster carried the bike ALL the way back through the forest to pitch it on the porch in a show of mind-manipulating aggression?? Well played, Mr. Sanchez.

The monster knows just when to jump, when to show its face, and is pretty handy when it comes to electrical cutoff (NO generator can withstand its power). Aside from the asinine behavior of the cast and a mapped-out storyline, I’m willing to sustain execution on this one because the premise (while not new) does hold some sort of interest outside of a witch or hermit/vampire or extraterrestrial holding residence in the forest, and for the most part the movie is entertaining in some fashion. It’s not terrible, and it’s not horror gold – it’s just there… kind of like Bigfoot. It could be there, and then again it couldn’t be there – it all depends on your eyes to decide whether or not it truly Exists.

Xiall – The Great Osteomancer Joins Sideshow’s Court of the Dead

Sideshow Collectibles' Court of the DeadIn case you haven’t noticed, we’re pretty fond of Sideshow Collectibles’ awesome Court of the Dead Premium Format Figures line, and today we have for you the first look at Xiall – The Great Osteomancer, the power behind the faction of Bone. Read on for the details along with Xiall’s concept artwork.

Product Description
Xiall, the Chancellor of Osteomancy, cares little for the delicate game that Death plays within the Court of the Dead. In fact, she finds much of the Court a contemptible exercise in excess.

But it is neither ego nor arrogance that drives the cold and calculating Xiall. No, it is purely logic. Every move the Chancellor makes is part of a deeper plan – but a deeper plan conceived by whom?

For Xiall, there is only the way of Bone. No compromise, no partnerships – for the Chancellor is certain that only the strict adherence to the philosophies of Bone can lead the Underworld in its endeavors to shatter the oppressive yoke of the Heavens and Hells. Any detour from her path is one that compromises the purpose of the Underworld and is to be immediately dismissed. But Xiall is no fool. She is well aware that a facade of cooperation and consideration will gain more advantage than one that reflects the reality of her beliefs. This is the truth behind her outward appearance, which she has shaped into both a disguise, and mockery, of those she holds in low esteem.

About the Court of the Dead
Over millennia, Death has harvested countless souls on behalf of the warring powers of Heaven and Hell. Seeking to redefine the laws of the afterlife, he orchestrates a Court of the Dead, filling the Underworld with souls he’s taken as his own.

Assembled from the disciplines of Spirit, Bone, and Flesh, together in the service of Death, they shall Rise, Conquer, Rule.

Exclusive V/H/S: Viral Interviews Part 1: Gregg Bishop, Justin Welborn, Nacho Vigalondo, Marcel Sarmiento

As Hollywood studios push for cinema to exist exclusively in digital media, there is a not-so-quiet cry for the grit of analog VHS. Part nostalgia and part need to hold on to something that is not just an ephemeral format, this fascination has kept the V/H/S franchise alive in the marketplace with its third installment, V/H/S: Viral, arriving first on (ironically) VOD platforms October 23, 2014, with a limited theatrical run slated for November 21, 2014.

The fetish for crackling tracking lines, the lack of image stabilization—this texture applied again to the subgenre of the found footage film, wrapped around an anthology series exploring highly different voices and narrative obsessiveness. These bits of hand-held voyeuristic techniques situate the audience’s eye as a direct participant within the movie’s action.

This immersion can also be compared to the first-person shooter type of video game, and it’s not just for kids anymore—on phones, tablets, and in most households we are experiencing worlds in a direct point-of-view orientation (heads-up-display) as we, ourselves, run headlong into strange worlds filled with danger and monsters, only to respond within seconds or lose our simulated life onscreen.

V/H/S: Viral Exclusive Interviews

At Fantastic Fest Dread Central was escorted into two abandoned karaoke rooms to discuss V/H/S: Viral. The first room was inspired by Disney’s Haunted Mansion; the second, Jem and the Holograms. Our first interview with some of the creators behind the film’s segments did not start until everyone had whiskey— these then are their tales of applying the digital to resurrect the analog, told in two parts.

We bring you Part #1 from our Haunted Mansion group below; check back for more tomorrow.

GREGG BISHOP – WRITER/DIRECTOR (DANTE THE GREAT)

Gregg Bishop V/H/S: ViralDREAD CENTRAL: Where did your idea come from?

GREGG BISHOP: The idea came from an article in 2007 about a police raid on David Copperfield’s warehouse, and it ended up being nothing; I think it was just a crazy assistant or something. But it just kind of was a springboard to the idea of: What if a real famous magician was dabbling in black magic and making people disappear? I thought it was just kind of fun, something you hadn’t seen before. That’s the whole thing with the V/H/S movies… each short is so unique and something you hadn’t seen before, and that’s what we’re aspiring to.

DREAD CENTRAL: How did you establish the point of view in the film?

GB: This one is a little unique in that it is a hybrid. Kind of like a documentary-style idea, where you have footage from the real world—so you have interview footage, security cameras, just footage from everywhere all put together…The idea is to give the film an energy. In found footage there are always challenges that happen in justifying the camera, so it becomes a problem. The whole thing’s a cheat anyway. We’re not trying to fool anyone. The producers say, ‘We’re past trying to fool anyone.’ Nobody’s been fooled by found footage since BLAIR WITCH. Everything’s a cheat. If you cut it’s a cheat. If you add subtitles it’s a cheat. We went in with the idea of not letting the found footage [style] mess with the story. Stick with story first, and abandon the found footage if we have to.

DREAD CENTRAL: So it’s an evolution of found footage; what would you call this new style?

GB: I don’t think it’s a new style. I’m definitely not the first director to do it. I mean, Neill Blomkamp did it in District 9, which I’m a big fan of. I I think we’re abandoning the tape idea this time. It was very much the rules in Part 1 and 2, but not in Part 3. There’s been END OF WATCH. Audiences are so smart these days they can make that leap. We had some ideas of making the whole thing found footage and floating cameras around, like in CHRONICLE, but that would take me more out of it. ‘Why is this guy floating cameras and pointing them at himself?’ Versus just telling the story.

JUSTIN WELBORN – ACTOR (DANTE THE GREAT)

Justin Welborn V/H/S: ViralDREAD CENTRAL: How were you selected for the role of Dante?

JUSTIN WELBORN: [Gregg] told me he had written this script with me in mind. We had done other films together—DANCE OF THE DEAD, THE OTHER SIDE. We’ve been collaborating for a while. He told me he wrote something with me in mind, so I said, “Let’s make a movie! What’s it for?” And when he told me it was V/H/S—that was a deal-sealer.

GREGG BISHOP: I just want to add that in casting Justin Welborn, I wrote the script for him because I knew he would come in with the missing pages. That’s what all great actors do is come in with your missing pages. He adds so much to the role that I couldn’t come up with myself. You turn the camera on the guy and he’ll say crazy stuff that you’re like, “Oh God! Thank God! I didn’t write that, but that’s awesome! We’re gonna put it in the movie!”

JW: I think all the craziest stuff was with the practical effects and especially the fire. I’m wearing this very flammable cape. We’re in a warehouse full of sawdust. I start throwing around fireballs, and you can’t missed with that stuff. And I missed. ALL THE TIME. I almost set myself on fire several times during the movie—but all worth it.

DREAD CENTRAL: Both you guys are huge horror fans?

GB: I didn’t really set out to do that, but horror films became the way to do indie films. If you want to make movies, make a horror film, and then we’ll do whatever else. And then all of a sudden you’re watching horror films all the time because you want to see what everybody is doing, and you’re involved with all the directors and all the other actors who are doing things. You can tell when somebody didn’t have a lot of money and took the world with it. So that’s really inflated the amount of horror that I’ve watched over the past ten years.

DREAD CENTRAL: Horror actors are always game to do crazy shit that actors in other genres aren’t.

JW: I think it’s a relief, and a release, and it’s always fun. You can have more fun making the movie than the movie turns out to be if you’re not too careful.

NACHO VIGALONDO – WRITER/DIRECTOR (GORGEOUS VORTEX)

Nacho Vigalondo V/H/S: ViralDREAD CENTRAL: So, the idea behind your segment?

NACHO VIGALONDO: This is the first time I confess this, but this segment is inspired by my sexual past life. My story portal links two universes. I’ve been in both of them in my life. I don’t want to be too specific about it. My two most beloved genres are horror and science fiction. I love science fiction. I love horror.

DREAD CENTRAL: What do you love about science fiction?

NV: Science fiction is not a genre, actually. Every science fiction movie is a different genre, with science fiction tropes. Science fiction is more than a complete genre: it is a catalog of tropes which creates the craziness, the pull of some ideas. It makes your story reach for bigger places. (I don’t know how to say it properly, even in Spanish!)

I love science fiction. You can make a drama, you can make a comedy—it can be a perfect drama, a perfect comedy, even if they don’t have something new. You can make an old-school drama and go to the Oscars. But if you make science fiction, if you make horror, you are forced to do something new because people are not going to buy the same thing twice. So I love the fact that if you make science fiction or horror, you are forcing your imagination every time, and I love that aspect of the thing.

A good horror movie, a good science fiction, somehow has to tell you something new every time. It’s in constant renovation—I love that. And in this case when I found a way of mixing horror and sci-fi in this organic way, I instantly fell in love with the story. I wanted the found-footage element to really link it to the story. I wanted the camera in the hands of the guy to be part of the plot all the time.

DREAD CENTRAL: How is this very personal to you because they’re not polar opposites if you think about an average love affair?

NV: In the common universe, in the first universe, in the common universe, it’s not a sexual universe. The kind of relationship they have is kind of boring because he’s working in the basement, and she’s sleeping up there. That universe is not sexual at all. And the other universe is hyper-sexual. Everything has to do with sex, all the time. They have genital monsters, and they seem to be sexual predators all the time. And they seem to have set this kinky time. The Satanic element is somehow in the background, it is not as important. I thought it was funny to tell how in both universes, the non-sexual and the hyper-sexual, things are going wrong for the two guys, in two places. I wanted to find some kind of balance between these two different universes.

DREAD CENTRAL: How did you come up with the upside-down crosses, with the blimps, with the world-building aspects?

NV: I love Satanism. I love all the aesthetics around it. If I lived in San Francisco in the ‘70s, I’d be a follower of Anton LaVey. In science fiction, I’m more of a fan of Philip K. Dick than of Ray Bradbury. I like Ray Bradbury, but he’s so nice all the time. I prefer darker science fiction.

MARCEL SARMIENTO – WRITER/DIRECTOR (VICIOUS CIRCLES [THE WRAP])

Marcel Sarmiento V/H/S: ViralDREAD CENTRAL: What was the inspiration for your segment?

MARCEL SARMIENTO: The inspiration in general was to try to do something different from the first two movies. Instead of having a slow burn like the first two movies, which kept coming back to the same place, to come back to something different each time. To sort of jolt the movie forward. There was this viral video that some kid took of a police chase right outside his house To take it on the road, to expand the mythology a little bit.

DREAD CENTRAL: Did you use a lot of analog techniques in your cutting and to create the texture of your segment?

MS: Yeah, I thought because this was like a change, because it was the wrap, and after breaking it up each time for twenty minutes at a time, it was difficult for the audience to come back for two or three minutes, to get back into it. I felt that emotionally… very glitchy, arty, to have fun with that whole thing, to take it to the nth level.

DREAD CENTRAL: How was it working with the actors in your segment?

MS: It was good. Most of them, it was the first thing they ever did. It was fun—we had all night shoots, and wet, in the L.A. river in muck. When you do something like this, you’ve got to be down for it because you’re certainly not doing it for the money.

DREAD CENTRAL: So you do it for the love of the genre?

MS: Love of the genre, yes. This was a chance to do an experiment. You don’t have that many opportunities to do that, and V/H/S is one of those. That’s why so many segments really shine, because people really took a chance.

DREAD CENTRAL: Do you think because of this experience, it will evolve the look and feel of what you work on in the future?

MS: I don’t think I will do found footage stuff, unless I find something that’s more of a hybrid, something like Gregg’s segment. I’m not a fan of shaky-cam – I know my wrap is very shaky. So I approached it as doing something that I know really isn’t my forte.

DREAD CENTRAL: So you approached it as ‘I don’t like shaky-cam; I’m going to do a lot of shaky-cam’?

MS: We didn’t say we were going to do a lot shaky-cam, but just the fact that there were a lot of chases, and we were running around with GoPros — it was going to be fucking shaky. So we just made the choice to try not to make it as less shaky as possible, but it’s going to be frenetic, and right in the middle of the movie, it might not make a lot of sense, but at least it’s going to be something fresh. It’ll feel like you’re getting your money’s worth because it’s five different little stories and we’ll tie it all up in the end. So that was what was exciting for us to try.

ENSEMBLE

Dread Central: Were any of you influenced by the anthology horrors of the ‘80s or ‘90s, like Creepshow or “Tales from the Darkside”?

GREGG: I grew up watching old “Twilight Zones” and “Amazing Stories.” I really looked forward to every episode. It was more TV stuff for me. I’d always loved anthologies and always wanted to be a part of one, so when they invited me, I thought, ‘What better one to be a part of?’ It has such a long line of fantastic directors and creative people.

JUSTIN: I watched “Tales from the Darkside,” but I also read all the comic books. House of Mystery, House of Secrets, all that kind of stuff. I was always, “I want all the comics in the world!” (SCARY VOICE:) “YOU GET ALL THE COMICS IN THE WORLD!!!” “NO! AAARRRGHH!” (LAUGHS). Now, Cain, give me the evil moral of the story! “Be careful watch you wish for!”

MARCEL: Watching all that stuff growing up, I don’t even remember referring to them as anthologies. I feel like that term is sort of a new conceit in the last ten years. I just remember seeing shit I liked on “Twilight Zone.” They worked perfectly for what they were, and I didn’t expect any more. I loved that shit.<

NACHO: Compared to US television, Spanish network is a piece of shit!

DREAD CENTRAL: But you had boobs, though, right?

NACHO: Not on television: We didn’t have boobs, we didn’t have “Twilight Zone.” But here I am, I don’t know—I survived! I remember being blown away by the ‘80s remake of ‘”Alfred Hitchcock Presents” on Spanish TV. I didn’t know it was a remake at the time. I was so impressed by the stories, and then later I found out they came from people like Roald Dahl. I loved the fact that the morals are there all the time. Those are not fantastical stories, but I love how perfectly crafted they are. They found a way to tell the perfect story, with the perfect assemblage of pieces, of really small pieces. I loved the fact that you could tell a story with so few elements.

Synopsis

Australia’s Monster Fest 2014 Unveils More Juicy Details

We told you last month about the opening film, Charlie’s Farm, that will be kicking off Melbourne-based horror festival Monster Fest this year. Now we have a whole plethora of new info that cements the event as something that horror fans really won’t want to miss.

Between November 20 and 30, 2014, Cinema Nova in Carlton and Yah Yah’s Bar in Collingwood will play host to this year’s selection of blood-soaked cinematic depravity and something that sounds really, really special: the first ever ‘Monster Fest Academy of Horror & Mayhem’!

This will see four full days dedicated to workshops and master-classes designed to delight and educate horror fans and budding genre filmmakers. A smorgasbord of cult genre figures will be on hand to lead activities, including Twisted Twins Jen and Sylvia Soska, The Human Centipede: First Sequence star Ashley C. Williams, Astron-6’s Conor Sweeney and Matthew Kennedy, and legendary Troma pioneer Lloyd Kaufman, who will be delivering his internationally renowned ‘Make Your Own Damn Movie’ master-class.

These are just a few names from a stunning line-up of talent for the ‘Monster Fest Academy of Horror & Mayhem’, with the full details due to be revealed on Wednesday, November 29, at the official Monster Fest media launch at Cherry Bar, Melbourne. The master-classes themselves, alongside other events and activities, will take place at the fest’s lounge and event space – dubbed ‘The Monster’s Lair’ – situated upstairs at Yah Yah’s Bar, 99 Smith Street, Collingwood. Here, the drinks will flow and food can be had amidst a magical Dario Argento-inspired internal decor peppered with luxurious bean bags.

Films screening this year that have been announced so far include the aforementioned opener Charlie’s Farm, festival closer ABCs of Death 2, Eli Roth’s The Green Inferno, modern cult favourite WolfCop, the hysterically awesome Dead Snow 2, the Rose Leslie-starring Honeymoon, the World Premiere of Addison Heath’s Under a Kaleidoscope, and The Plague – a film by Melbournian duo Nick Kozakis and Kosta Ouzas.

But hell, that’s not all: Other news revealed by the fest includes the fact that they have entered an official partnership with Howling Wolves Wines of Margaret River, Western Australia. Whilst last year saw them partner up as official alcohol sponsor, for 2014 they’ve gone the whole hog (or should that be the whole bottle?) and are now a full naming partner, seeing this year’s festival now dubbed the ‘Howling Wolves Monster Fest’. I’ll drink to that!

Of the partnership, festival director Neil Foley said, “Having Howling Wolves come on board as our naming rights partner is a incredible development; it means we can continue growing to become the biggest, boldest, and nastiest film festival in the land – The Howling Wolves are riding the Monster wave; it’s a great day for Aussie horror!”

Limited tickets for the master-classes and special events at The Monster’s Lair (Yah Yah’s Bar) can be had via the Monster Fest ticket page on Pozible, with session tickets for each of the film screenings to be available soon from the Cinema Nova box office and website.
You can also follow Monster Fest on Facebook for the latest news alongside the chance to win prizes in their online competitions.

Hollows Grove (2014)

Hollows GroveStarring Mykelti Williamson, Lance Henriksen, Matthew Carey

Directed by Craig Efros

I’m a skeptic to the core and a horror aficionado through and through, so when such a boastful claim as “the most frightening film you’ll see all year” is made by the creators of Hollows Grove, I’ve GOT to jump in with both feet and see if a statement is verified and substantiated. I know that every person’s fear response is different and what will make one person wet their Underoos might not even raise a hair on the back of another’s neck. All that I could hope to ask for with each and every passing film that likes to make these allegations is a nice change of scenery and not another one of those “haunted asylum/orphanage films“… oh, crap.

Looking at the movie from the outside, you’d get the inclination that this is going to be another run-of-the-mill found footage display that attempts to freak the viewer out with loud bangs, flash scares, and an annoying cast that ABSOLUTELY REFUSES to drop a camera in order to save themselves, regardless of the peril they’re facing at the time. If you think for one moment that Hollows Grove opted to go that route and follow the blueprint of so many haunted institution films set out before it, then I’m terribly sorry to say that you’ve nailed it directly on the head. Allow me to dissect this carbon copy that fails to deliver the goods on a number of tiers.

The movie, directed by first-timer (outside of one short) Craig Efros, gives us a look into the Hollows Grove orphanage, which is supposedly one of the most haunted buildings in the U.S. and will be the subject of the latest episode of the Spirit Paranormal Investigation Team (S.P.I.T.- no, I’m not kidding) and their reality TV ghost hunting show.

Harold Maxwell (Matthew Carey) tags along with his friends on the team as they ready themselves to patrol the halls of the abandoned structure to see if they can collect evidence of any residual hauntings. The footage used was supposedly from Maxwell’s camera, and at times you get the feeling that the whole ghost hunting prospect is a cash-cow for the team with no real desire to take this stuff seriously. The movie takes a bit of time to get started, and we’re treated to a massive miscast in the film’s start as movie and TV veteran Mykelti Williamson (Forrest Gump, “24”) plays FBI Agent Jones, who is in charge of the case we’re about to witness. I had no idea that the feds would jump into a case regarding a missing ghost hunting crew, considering everything else they’ve got to look after; in any event, he is only used for about two minutes of actual screen time, so if you love the former Benjamin Buford Blue (Bubba), then you’ll be sorely disappointed.

As we’re on the “why was he even in the movie?” train, another icon is led to storyline sacrifice, and that is Lance Henriksen himself, playing Bill, who works on the show as a props director. His time on camera is amusing but FAR too short.

Also, one of the more irritating performances that I’ve personally seen on film in a while belongs to Matt Doherty in his role of show star Tim. His actions are the stuff of someone you’d like to pound into the ground – take the normal performance of Paul Giamatti, give him about 12-15 cups of high-octane coffee, raise his vocal levels a few octaves, and voila! Instant vexation towards any movie-watching experience.

All right – on to the visuals! We’re used to the routine shaky-cam vista that only a found footage film can offer, and while this is no different, there are at least a few breaks with some stationary cams every now and then, giving your flip-flopped innards a chance to settle. Night-vision also has its time in the sun (or the dark) when the going gets hectic for our crew of spook-spotters, and outside of a couple of certifiable “oh shit!” moments, I honestly cannot say that there is a difference between the Grove and movies like Session 9, Grave Encounters, or the myriad of spectrally haunted establishment films that have come before it.

Was I let down regarding the final product? Yes. Was I mildly amused at the idea of how full of crap the crew knew they were about their show and its production? Yes. Could I honestly recommend this to someone and make a statement that this movie will be the scariest thing they’ve seen all year? Don’t hold your breath. When it comes to investigating these halls, leave the doors locked and move along, please – this building was condemned for a reason, and that reason is justified.

Exclusive: 6 Quick Wrong Turn 6 Questions for Actress Sadie Katz

In Wrong Turn 6: The Last Resort, Sadie Katz plays an impeccably inbred sex kitten with not only an ax to grind, but many, many people to kill.

Dread Central: First of all, I have to say I really enjoyed your writing when I saw the movie Scorned. Very clever, bitter stuff! Were you able to ad lib or change any of the dialogue for your character in Wrong Turn 6?

Sadie Katz: Thanks for that! Scorned was wickedly fun to write. Frank Woodworth wrote a really clean script in terms of writing… there wasn’t really need for ad libbing. There’s a couple of juicy fun lines I loved delivering – one of my favorites, “Don’t you fret; you’ll be in me soon enough.”

DC: What was it about playing Sally that especially appealed to you? There’s a lot going on, from the physicality of it to the psychological aspects.

Sadie Katz

SK: I don’t want to give away too many spoilers here, but Sally’s really one of the most complicated characters as far as back stories goes in a horror. She’s literally a cat in heat who’s dying to mate and have some kittens. She’s intensely loyal to her family to the point of… well, let’s just say she believes in keeping it in the family. Do you see what I’m saying here? I was absolutely stoked to play her because she’s just got all these levels, and every day we filmed I was trying to squeeze as many levels as I could into the dialogue and scenes I had. I loved that challenge. I was totally grateful to not just play a one-note female who was either running from the killer or a killer who just killed for blood. As an actor to get to play a character like Sally, it’s a gift… one you hope you don’t fuck up.

DC: Taking Wrong Turn 6 out of the mix, what’s your favorite one of the franchise, and what do you love about it?

SK: Everyone says the first one because it started them all. Eliza Dushku is one of my favorite actresses because I was a “Buffy” and “Angel” super nerdy fan. So of course that would be my absolute favorite. I’ve read fans compare the others to the first though, and that’s sorta a crazy thing because horror franchises don’t really work that way… I mean, you can’t just keep duplicating the story again and again because why bother? I’m also a fan of changing the environment slightly in every Wrong Turn in some of the same ways “American Horror Story” has switched their whole set-up. So, that being said, I really enjoyed number 5 because the kills were absolutely brutal… the ending gave me nightmares.

DC: I know this isn’t a horror-related question, but I just can’t help but ask… “Nipples and Palm Trees”? What’s that about? (Aside from the obvious…) Who do you play in it?

SK: This is my favorite question. It’s a raunchy sex comedy about a loser looking for love in Los Angeles. It was shot for next to nothing by the super talented Dylan Reynolds. I’m the female lead [with] Matt James, who actually played Merl for “Angel” fans, and Akihiro Kitamura, who was in Human Centipede. Hulu actually just picked it up this week and dubbed it a ‘Cult Film Comedy’ so it’s found an audience. A couple of bands have named themselves after the movie. And yes, there’s a lot of nipples in the movie… mine included, but the title was a gimmick; at the heart it’s a love story. Everyone gets a lot of shit for the title… well-deserved. I think it’s genius.

DC: Since you’ve now written a thriller script that you saw all the way through production and release, do you look at potential roles differently than you used to?

SK: I think I tend to look at filmmakers a little closer. I mean this in the nicest way; I can tell if someone really knows what they’re doing or not. I mean, the worst thing you can do is get involved with a project that loses funding, doesn’t get finished, or even worse doesn’t get distribution. Right now it’s like the Wild West of making films, and I’m surprised how many scripts I have or auditions I go to where I kind of know the film won’t ever happen. I know this is going to sound so insane coming from a female, but if I read a horror script and there’s not any huge names and there’s no nudity, I’m asking, “Why isn’t there any nudity?” I’m thinking how’s this film getting distribution… how can we all make sure the film is successful and gets sold? Look, if no one buys the movie, I don’t care if I get paid or not. I’m going to be bummed out for all involved if we aren’t all celebrating the release.

DC: What’s next on the horror agenda for you?

SK: I’m in a film that just wrapped, State of Desolation, which is directed by Jim Towns, also starring Jamie Bernadette, Dominique Swain, Craig Stark and Jessica Morris. It’s a very clever take on the zombie genre, post-apocalyptic and very sexy.

I’m also back at the computer writing again about a woman on the edge…which seems to be what I prefer to write about. You can draw your own conclusions about that one.

DC: Thanks so much, Sadie. Can’t wait to see all that you have coming up.

SK: THANK YOU! And happy Halloween.

Exclusive V/H/S: Viral Interviews Part 2: Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead

After surviving the Haunted Mansion-esque karaoke room at Fantastic Fest for Part 1 of Dread Central’s V/H/S: Viral interviews, we were led next door to the Jem and the Holograms-themed room. The walls were silver glitter, and it was… wait for it… truly outrageous.

Here there was no whiskey to be had, but on hand were directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (Resolution, Spring). Adjacent to them were the young skate-punks cast for their segment: Nick Blanco and Chase Newton. I say that because one of them had a DRI t-shirt, and through some in-depth probing I learned that Justin bonded with them over the band Gorilla Biscuits.

Though many ideas were tossed around, “Skaters vs. Skull Monsters” seemed to hit it off with the V/H/S: Viral crew, and their segment was green-lit—that is, after they stalked the producers repeatedly to become a part of the franchise. Here relentless persistence and great ideas won out. Contained within, we discuss proper skater aspect ratio, Benson and Moorhead’s favorite horror films… and, you know, punk rock.

Look for the film on VOD platforms October 23, 2014, with a limited theatrical run slated for November 21, 2014.

DREAD CENTRAL: How did you come up with the idea for this movie?

JUSTIN BENSON: Basically Aaron and I sat around and tried to find our way into making a found footage short. Find a way to motivate those cameras so you don’t have to justify it past the first image of the movie—Oh, they’re making a skate video. That’s why all the cameras are there. Plus there was this image of a skateboarder fighting a skeleton with a sword, and on the board there’s a camera. So, there’s something about that image that’s really cool.

AARON MOORHEAD: It’s a hyper 2014 Jason and the Argonauts!

JUSTIN BENSON: It’s Mortal Kombat meets Tony Hawk’s Skateboarding.

DREAD CENTRAL: Both of you kids grew up watching skateboard videos?

JUSTIN BENSON: My favorite skate videos were the World Industries ones and the Plan B ones. In our segment we wanted to do the 4:3 thing, where the edges are cut because you’re using the wide-angle lens. We wanted to make it look really legit, but it wouldn’t have looked good on a big screen.

NICK BLANCO: It’s such a debate in skateboarding, it’s crazy. 4:3 vs. 16:9. Because VXs will never die; it’s what skateboarding is filmed with.

DREAD CENTRAL: How did you find your skaters?

Justin Benson V/H/S ViralJUSTIN BENSON: The original thought was if we put in a casting breakdown in LA that said we need some kids who can skate, everybody’s going to be like, “I can skate!” And they learned how to skate like two hours ago because every actor’s dying all the time to get a role. It would be useless. It would look so bad. These guys had to be high-performance skaters. So we thought, Let’s find someone who skates really well, who has awesome an personality. We split up and went to a bunch of skate parks and just watched kids skating and took their pictures.

DREAD CENTRAL: Creepy!

JUSTIN BENSON: Yeah, we know! So we took their pictures and got their phone numbers—even creepier!—and we’re like, “Yeah! We’re casting for a MOVIE!” [Laughter.]

AARON MOORHEAD: This really happened by the way. It was so awkward.

JUSTIN BENSON: But what are you gonna do? You can’t put out a casting call in LA, “I’m looking for a skater dude”: Every single actor between the age of 18 and 50 will say, “I’m an 18-year-old skateboarder, and I can do this!”

AARON MOORHEAD: And then that just led us to some other connections. So then we knew people at skate shops who knew all the local skaters. We put it up on Facebook: “Hey, who can skate?” Just a very lo-fi approach to casting. Very direct-access.

JUSTIN BENSON: I remember the first time I talked to Chase, he was sitting there with a badass little cooler and a 40 ounce, and I was like, ‘Dude, I used to drink 40 ouncers! You listen to Gorilla Biscuits?’ He was like, ‘Dude, I listen to Gorilla Biscuits!’ — And I realized that in my heart I’m still 15!

DREAD CENTRAL: Chase, what was it like for you working on this film?

CHASE NEWTON: I had one other small role in a film about skating, but it was nothing like this.

DREAD CENTRAL: How was it to perform actual filmed set-ups?

CHASE NEWTON: It was really awkward at first. There’s a lot of choreographing and planning. I wasn’t really expecting that. I thought it was going to be easy, like “Hey skating.” But it wasn’t like that. It was like, hard. But it was fun.

JUSTIN: Our action director, Vince Capone, brought on the stuntmen that attacked them and all that. But these kids did their own stunts. I was worried, “These guys, they haven’t acted before…” But [Capone] was like, “Those guys? They’re gonna be fine. They basically just run around all day every day and break themselves skateboarding. Those guys know how to hit, know how to take a hit, know how to sell a hit, how to take a fall. Those guys are fine!” WE [the co-directors] were the ones who were tired every day. These guys were just like, “Yeah, it’s just another day!”

DREAD CENTRAL: Where did you feel you pushed yourselves artistically because this isn’t the style you usually shoot in?

AARON MOORHEAD: That’s what we loved about it.

JUSTIN BENSON: We set a record for ourselves for how many practical effects we could do in one day. It was a nice warm-up for [our follow-up movie] Spring because spring has a ton of creature effects in it. We did a LOT of practical effects in one day. Found footage really frees you up; you can cheat and get away with stuff.

AARON MOORHEAD: We didn’t actually use a lot of glitch effects in ours, because we wanted it to seem more like an edited video, with split-screen effects. Our usual style is more of a quieter, character-driven kind of thing. But we’re like, “Look, we’re two dudes who also love kinetic cinema.” We just wanted to go crazy. The V/H/S: Viral [producers] were like, ‘Just go nuts with it!’ And we went berserk!

DREAD CENTRAL: How did the producers contact you for this segment?

JUSTIN BENSON: We pitched. We saw them walking by us, and we yelled at them!

AARON MOORHEAD: There was one day after a screening of Resolution at Screamfest, and the producer Brad Miska just walked by and was like, ‘Would you want to do a segment in the next V/H/S?’ And he probably meant it rhetorically or in theory, but we just took it literally and kept submitting concept after concept after concept.

JUSTIN BENSON: Finally he was like, [exasperated tone] ‘OKAAAAYYY!’

AARON MOORHEAD: He probably just had a few too many drinks one night and was like, “I’ll just say yes to them!”

DREAD CENTRAL: So you were stalking him! What were the concepts that didn’t make it?

Aaron Moorhead V/H/S ViralAARON MOORHEAD: There was a sweet skydiving one. There was actually a really fun surfing one, like a haunted reef basically, if you can imagine. There was a scene where they don’t know it, and some weird stuff happens at the reef already. The surfers are there waiting for a wave, and the viewer sees a dorsal fin of a shark coming towards them—and then for some reason the shark is scared off and goes the other way. There were so many of those fun little moments. And that would have been SO hard to shoot!

JUSTIN BENSON: [In] the one about skydiving some military enthusiast dorks go up and skydive. One of them has a gun because he’s a dork. And then there’s something up in the air that just blasts onto their plane. They have to jump out without the parachute and it’s all one long take, one long shot of this guy’s GoPro, freefalling to grab his parachute and then with his gun shooting this thing that’s attacking him in the air.

AARON MOORHEAD: There’s this thing, this creature that really exists, but you never really see it because its belly is the same color as the sky. And this is the day, it’s mating day. And a plane has hit its mate, and it’s PISSED. In the beginning, there’s dead birds falling from the sky—This is the day when the Lovecraftian sky creature’s gonna take some motherfuckers out.

DREAD CENTRAL: Speak to me about your love of horror; the both of you—

JUSTIN BENSON: We just love movies, and a lot of time those movies have horror elements in them, but we never talk about what genre our movies are in.

DREAD CENTRAL: But what is it about that aesthetic or iconography that keeps attracting you over and over to it?

JUSTIN BENSON: We both grew up on a lot of Stephen King, so there’s that. There’s the juxtaposition of a beautiful moment between people and then something really grotesque happens—there’s that.

AARON MOORHEAD: I think I just like the bizarre, and it’s not just horror, it’s also sci-fi. It’s just something that’s not in this world. I’ve always just gravitated toward something that’s fantastic because it’s just so interesting. That’s I think the only way you can completely invent anything, just in sci-fi or in horror—if you want to call it that genre.

JUSTIN BENSON: When you’re telling a story in cinema, it’s pretty easy to get people to laugh or to empathize with the characters, but to really scare people? It’s really hard— and I don’t think our V/H/S segment does that, but that wasn’t really the intent; it was just to be fun—but when we do projects in horror where that’s the intent, and we pull that off, when we actually get under people’s skin and frighten them, that’s really satisfying. And it’s a really hard thing to do. Probably the hardest emotion to evoke in cinema is fear.

DREAD CENTRAL: What was the first movie that scared you?

JUSTIN BENSON: This is embarrassing, but it was first The Exorcist, but then Evil Dead II, because I saw it when I was six, and I didn’t know it was a comedy. I’m just like, “This is horrifying! There’s all these demons!” But now I see it and it’s like, ‘This is just broad comedy.’ It’s brilliant, but not scary at all.

AARON MOORHEAD: I was so young I don’t even remember it, but my parents love telling this story: I have an older sister. My parents were reading in bed and my sister runs in screaming “FREDDY KRUEGER! FREDDY KRUEGER!” I was too young to have seen Freddy Krueger, but she comes running in the room screaming about Freddy Krueger, and then a couple of minutes later I come running in screaming “UNSOLVED MYSTERIES! UNSOLVED MYSTERIES!” “Unsolved Mysteries” freaked my shit out when I was like four. Something about it made me think that I would see the people from the creepy mugshots right outside my window. I was horrified of that! Just the image of that man speaking with gravitas walking next to ambulances with their lights on…

DREAD CENTRAL: What are your dream projects, after Spring?

JUSTIN BENSON: We’ve already been working on our dream project, a movie about Aleister Crowley. We’ve been working on it for probably a year now. The script’s almost there, and we’ll probably go shoot it next summer in the UK.

DREAD CENTRAL: Are you fascinated by the occult?

JUSTIN BENSON: I’m fascinated in that particular area of the occult, in those old esoteric traditions. I don’t follow them myself. I find them interesting, and it’s a mythology that’s never really been explored in cinema. Cinema has two mythologies it explores—God and the Devil as we know it, in Christian religions. No one has really explored THAT area of the occult, that older thing, which I think can really get under people’s skin. I think it’s a fun way into a story.

DREAD CENTRAL: How does co-directing work, how do you differ?

AARON MOORHEAD: It’s not even like something where we set down a lot of rules. It’s like one of us will ask the other, “Hey, do you want to make a movie? We’ll have four arms instead of two, and two brains, and two computers to work at!” We’re both making the same movie; we have the same wellspring.

JUSTIN BENSON: I say action so loud as a practical thing because it’s to make sure everyone hears from like a mile away so you KNOW that everything is locked up, no one’s talking, all that.

AARON MOORHEAD: And conversely since I have the camera, I’m closer to the actors, and I don’t want to yell in their face.
