Written by Mike Le (Patient Zero), Dark Summer stars Peter Stormare (Fargo), Maestro Harrell (“The Wire”), Keir Gilchrist (“United States of Tara”), Stella Maeve (The Runaways), and Grace Phipps (Fright Night).

Synopsis:
Summer is a time to relax, unwind, take a vacation, and be free. But 17-year-old Daniel Austin gets none of that because his obsessive online stalking of his classmate and crush, Mona Wilson, got him put on house arrest for the whole summer. So, no cell phone, no Internet, no leaving the property, and especially no Mona. Then Daniel’s single mother has to go on a long business trip, and Daniel has the place to himself.

Daniel figures out a way to piggyback onto his neighbors’ wireless signal and, believing he’s surfing off the grid, uses his time to check in on his friends – and Mona… But what Daniel didn’t expect is for Mona to check up on him. And what she does next shakes him to his very core.

And then things start to happen. Daniel receives mysterious packages in the mail, hears phantom noises, sees inanimate objects move, and feels a strange presence in the house…

We’ve been talking about Zombie Killers: Elephant’s Graveyard starring Billy Zane, Mischa Barton, Felissa Rose, and Dee Wallace for quite some time; and we announced last week that the flick is coming home to DVD and Blu-ray from Anchor Bay. Today we have the exclusive artwork premiere!

From the Press Release:
The rural town of Elwood has always been a “bubble” against the backdrop of an organism-based epidemic where infected humans don’t die; instead they roam to spread the infection in a grisly, horrific way. Those who escape must survive—by any means necessary. But at what price?

On February 3, 2015, Anchor Bay Entertainment presents Zombie Killers: Elephant’s Graveyard, an exciting survival thriller about a fallen world that’s as provocative as it is chilling. Written and directed by B. Harrison Smith and with a stellar genre cast including Billy Zane (Electrick Children, Titanic, Dead Calm), Dee Wallace (E.T., The Howling), Mischa Barton (“The O.C.,” Walled In), Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp, Satan’s Playground), and Brian Anthony Wilson (Law Abiding Citizen, Limitless), Zombie Killers: Elephant’s Graveyard is presented in an unrated version on Blu-ray™ and DVD with an SRP of $26.99 for Blu-ray™ and $22.98 for DVD.

In the film the “Zombie Killers” are a small band of young adults, trained by military vet Seiler (Zane), who have sworn to protect the town and aim for the head if anything threatens Elwood’s last survivors.

Bonus features on Zombie Killer: Elephant’s Graveyard Blu-ray™ and DVD include the behind-the-scenes featurettes “Bloodbath and Beyond,” “The Look of Zombie Killers: Elephant’s Graveyard,” and “Zombie Killers: Elephant’s Graveyard Behind the Scenes.”

Earlier this year we were surprised to learn that a fifth installment in the Phantasm franchise is soon headed our way and has in fact already been shot. Titled Phantasm: Ravager, we’ve heard very little about the project in the last several months, and today the silence has been broken with a little holiday treat!

In a special video posted over on the Silver Sphere YouTube channel, franchise creator Don Coscarelli and Ravager director David Hartman tease the upcoming film with a brief collection of clips that weren’t previously seen in the trailer. They also impart a holiday message in the video and reveal that Ravager is good to go for 2015.

So if you’ve been hungry for more on the Phantasm front, check out the video below. You’ll also find the aforementioned trailer down yonder, which we shared earlier this year!

Ravager features Reggie Bannister (a veteran of all five films) in his decades-long pursuit of the malevolent Tall Man, and it forces him to finally confront the mysteries at the heart of the Phantasm saga. The entire original cast is back, including Michael Baldwin, Bill Thornbury, Kat Lester, and Angus Scrimm, along with some great new characters.

Last month we learned that IFC Midnight had scooped up Australian zombie film Wyrmwood and sci-fi thriller Ejecta, and today release dates for both have been set. You can expect them in February, and you’ll find all the information by reading on!

Described as Mad Max meets Dawn of the Dead, writer-director Kiah Roache-Turner’s Wyrmwood (review) centers on Barry, a talented mechanic and family man whose life is torn apart on the eve of a zombie apocalypse. On the road he teams up with Chalker, a fellow survivor, and together they must arm themselves and prepare to battle their way through hordes of flesh-eating monsters in a harsh Australian bushland.

Wyrmood will hit VOD platforms on February 13, 2015. The cast includes Jay Gallagher, Bianca Bradey, Leon Burchill, Keith Agius, Catherine Terracini, Meganne West, Luke McKenzie, Berynn Schwerdt, Yure Covich, Cain Thompson, Beth Aubrey, Sheridan Harbridge, and Damian Dykeall.

Directed by Chad Archibald and Matt Wiele, Ejecta (review) tells the terrifying story of two men whose lives cross paths on a fateful night during a once in a lifetime solar storm. An unknown presence besieges the men on a remote farm, triggering an intense struggle to survive not only the night but also the horrific interrogations and tortures of an anonymous organization who will stop at nothing to learn the truth about what the two men witnessed.

Look for Ejecta on VOD platforms February 27, 2015. Julian Richings (Cube), Lisa Houle (Pontypool), and Adam Seybold (Exit Humanity) star.

Check out trailers for both below!

Houses October Built, The (Blu-ray / DVD)

The Houses October BuiltStarring Zack Andrews, Mike Roe, Brandy Schaefer, Jeff Larson, Bobby Roe

Directed by Bobby Roe

Distributed by RLJ/Image Entertainment

Why are horror movies so much more effective when we’re young? Things are scarier when we’re young because we still have that question in our minds. We know that the thing in front of us is fake. It’s a movie, a production with actors and F/X artists. But as children, the question always lingers, “It is fake, right?” And there is the question that surrounds The Houses October Built.

The movie was written by Zack Andrews and directed by Bobby Roe, both of whom have featured roles. It details the story of five individuals who are traveling around to some of the country’s best haunted attractions trying to find the best and most extreme ones in existence. And, of course, by “haunted attractions” we’re referring to those establishments that pop up right around October every year and feature all kinds of frightening creatures and evil entities looking to turn your Friday night out into a thing of nightmares. Our friends in The Houses October Built are looking for the best and baddest of these attractions and think they’ve found it in a mysterious haunted experience called The Blue Skeleton.

Since The Blue Skeleton is a moving, secret attraction, the hunt for the haunt leads them all over as they travel from place to place in a badass RV, but as they visit one haunt after another, they always seem to rub some of the actors the wrong way. Soon it appears that the actors may very well have it out for this group of documentarians, and as they draw closer to The Blue Skeleton, all sorts of strange things begin to occur. Is it worth the trip? Are these people terrorizing the group genuinely malicious, or is it all part of the show? That’s the true question to be answered in The Houses October Built.

The movie itself is quite effective. Shot in the found-footage style, The Houses October Built not only has a very chilling side, but it’s definitely lighthearted at times as well. Following a group of four men and one woman in an RV rolling from haunt to haunt certainly provides for some humorous entertainment. But when the filmmakers decide to buckle down and develop some tension, they do it well. Unfortunately, there is a lot of down time in between haunts where the gang hangs out in the RV, traveling or just messing around. It would have been nice to see a bit more action and less setup, but overall The Houses October Built manages to move along at a decent pace.

A big plus for The Houses October Built is the cast. Oftentimes we’ll find found footage indie films like this with a cast that’s just not up to par, eliminating all the realism from the movie. That’s certainly not the case here. The cast (whose characters all use their real first names) is quite effective. Specifically Brandy Schaefer and Mike Rose come across as very authentic. The characters the main five players bring to life are intriguing, and you quickly find yourself caring about them and involved in this excursion.

The DVD contains a few special features. There is a “Behind the Screams” featurette that takes a look at some of the real-life haunts featured in the movie. This could have used another sub-menu as all the haunts are featured in separate segments, but there is no way to select one individually. You’ve got to watch them all to see any of them. There are some pretty dull deleted scenes that don’t really amount to much and also a collection of photos of some of the scare actors featured in the movie as well as some shots of the cast skillfully carved into pumpkins by The Pumpkin Geek. Really cool work.

Overall The Houses October Built is an impressive film, especially for an indie found footage offering. There are some pacing issues as it does drag in places, but for the most part it keeps the action moving. The cast does a quality job, and director Bobby Roe ties it all together nicely. And some of the footage of them walking through the traditional haunts has to be authentic as the scares just seem too pure. As the film rolls on, we are placed in a position to try to determine how much of what we’re seeing is real and how much of it is fabricated for the sake of an extreme haunt. A nice surprise ending puts a bow on this quality package.

  • Behind the Screams featurette
  • Deleted Scenes

Top 7 Ghosts of Christmas Present

$

Ebenezer Scrooge saw a series of ghosts during his fateful Christmas Eve slumber, the second of which was the Ghost of Christmas Present. This inspired us to come up with our own Top 7 Ghosts of Christmas Present.

You might be asking, “What the hell are you guys talking about? Has all that eggnog and holiday shopping driven you mad? How can you have a list of the Top Ghosts of Christmas Present?”  Well, we decided to track down some the most effective and biggest earning haunters from recent years and throw together a list of some of the best supernatural apparitions to terrorize the big screen in the last five years. Be sure to let us know your choices in the comments section below!

This list contains only films featuring hauntings, possessions, or ghostly apparitions. A few honorable mentions to throw at you are Grave Encounters and Grave Encounters 2 (from 2011 and 2012), which play on the popular pastime of ghost hunting and show viewers just what might happen if one of those hunts goes awry. Another one to look out for is The Possession of Michael King. An impressive indie from 2014, The Possession of Michael King proves just how little in the way of big budget F/X you need to make something truly frightening. The collaboration of director David Jung and the star of the film, Shane Johnson, proved to create a powerful team that used all sorts of physicality and unique filming ideas to conjure up a creepy and quite powerful possession tale.

Now on to the…

top7ghostsofchristmaspresent

The Babadook (2014)
You can’t get any creepier or more timely than The Babadook. Writer/director Jennifer Kent simply blew audiences away with this top-of-the-line horror offering from 2014. The movie has been hailed by critics and fans alike, and even the great director of The Exorcist, William Friedkin, called The Babadook the most frightening film he’s ever seen. That’s high praise indeed. We don’t know if it’s the scariest thing ever, but it’s certainly one of the most effective haunters we’ve seen in a long, long time. As far as Ghosts of Christmas Present go, The Babadook is a shining example!

Paranormal Activity series (2009-2014)
The original Paranormal Activity film was developed and ran in festivals in 2007. It was picked up by Paramount, altered a bit, and released in theaters in the fall of 2009. It was an instant hit, bringing in nearly $200 million worldwide on a $15,000 budget. Audiences were blown away by the amazing tension that writer/director Oren Peli was able to create with such a minimal budget and tiny cast. Originally starring Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat, the story expanded in Paranormal Activity 2 to include Katie’s sister and her family in a slickly written prequel/sequel that wrapped around both ends of the first film. The quality of the movies, as would be expected, begins to fade as we delve deeper into the sequels, but the series is still a fantastic earner (Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones raked in almost $100 million on a $5 million budget). And Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension is scheduled for release in early 2015.

Insidious films (2011, 2013)
James Wan simply crushes the box office every time out. With Insidious Wan took a simple $1.5 million budget and turned it into a $150 million box office smash. He topped that with the over $160 million brought in by the film’s sequel, but they went all out on that one, shelling out a whopping $5 million to make it. The combination of Wan’s direction and co-writing with Leigh Whannell manages to create eerie environments and great, spooky characters. The imagery of the red-faced demon and the super scary old witch are brilliant. Combine all this with marketing campaigns that know just how to hit that exposed nerve of the audience, and you’ve got box office gold. If James Wan is going to release a film, it’s going to have a major theatrical presence, it’s going to have amazing commercials and trailers, and it’s going to have the entire horror community buzzing upon its release. That’s how it’s done. And watch for Leigh Whannell’s directorial debut with Insidious: Chapter 3 on June 5, 2015. Here’s a secret… it’s going to make $100 million-plus… shhhhh!

The Conjuring (2012)
James Wan simply forces our hand to include yet another of his haunting films on this list. What can we say? The guy is just that damn good at freaking audiences out! With The Conjuring he sets the table with the story of the Annabelle doll and then proceeds to knock it out of the park with the Perron family’s story and Ed and Lorraine Warren’s part in the tale. And just as you think you’re safe, The Conjuring ends by teasing the Warren’s most infamous paranormal investigation, that of the Lutz family. For those not aware of the reference, the Lutz family were the victims in The Amityville Horror haunting. A great package from start to finish. And the financial details are extraordinary. The Conjuring earned nearly $320 million on a $20 million budget (that’s not even figuring in the $250+ from the Annabelle movie), making it one of the highest grossing horror movies of all time. The upcoming sequel, The Conjuring: The Enfield Poltergeist (filming begins this summer for a June 10, 2016, release), should shoot this franchise’s earnings into the stratosphere.

Sinister (2012)
The filmmakers behind the 2012 horror show Sinister had the right idea by putting a face that could inspire nightmares on the antagonist of the film. Mr. Boogey (or, more properly, Bughuul) was a fantastically creepy character that helped to drive Sinister to become the box office gold it was. Director/co-writer Scott Derrickson (who also co-wrote and directed The Exorcism of Emily Rose and co-wrote Devil’s Knot) delivered a genuinely chilling film on a budget of $3 million, and audiences responded to the tune of nearly $80 million at the box office. That’s a nice bang for your buck. In addition to that, Sinister impressed audiences enough to garner a sequel that will be unleashed on August 21, 2015. You’ve been warned.

The Woman in Black (2012)
When it comes to being atmospheric, it’s hard to top Hammer. The Woman in Black helped to lead the Hammer charge as the production studio begins to churn out films again. And somewhere after attending school at Hogwarts and before growing Horns, Daniel Radcliffe joined forces with Hammer, and The Woman in Black was born. Based on the novel of the same name by Susan Hill, the movie is set in the perfectly fitting Eel Marsh House. The Woman in Black is everything you want a haunting story to be. It’s creepy, holds you on the edge of your seat, and delivers powerful frights. Earning over $125 million on a $15 million budget made the picture a smashing success, and filmmakers wasted no time in diving back to continue the story. Hill returned to help tell the story of The Woman in Black 2 Angel of Death, which you can see very soon on January 2, 2015.

Oculus (2014)
There are films that are on this list because they were absolutely amazing (like The Babadook), and there are films on this list because they became phenoms at the box office (like the Insidious movies). Oculus is a bit of both. A quality offering by talented filmmaker Mike Flanagan, Oculus nearly earned back its $5 million budget on opening day and would end up grossing over $44 million worldwide. And if that’s not enough, critics and fans agree that it’s a pretty damn good movie. Featuring the scariest mirror we’ve seen since Snow White, Oculus, like Flanagan’s previous film, Absentia, builds tension wonderfully as it takes the audience on a dark and foreboding ride into the unknown.

Give me 15 seconds of your time, and I’ll have your attention forever!” is Frost’s motto, and he bills himself as the first ever filmmaker to create an Instagram channel devoted solely to creating and posting original horror films made entirely for the platform. Broken into 15-second episodes, the shorts fall into sub-genres like suspense, psychological thrillers, slashers and found footage.

Frost’s latest project, Merry Crushed Monday, just debuted over on his Instagram channel yesterday, a follow-up to his web series Woman Crushed Wednesday. At the time of writing this, the first episode of the series has been uploaded, and it looks to be a holiday slasher in the vein of Black Christmas.

Check out Part 1 of Merry Crushed Monday below, and be sure to follow Jaiden Frost on Instagram for more. You can also keep tabs on the filmmaker over on his official website.

Ron Howard’s The Dark Tower adaptation may have stalled, but it’s full steam ahead on his In the Heart of the Sea, based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s best-selling book about the dramatic true journey of the Essex. A second trailer has arrived to get you pumped up for the film’s spring 2015 release.

In the Heart of the Sea stars Chris Hemsworth as the vessel’s veteran first mate, Owen Chase; Benjamin Walker as its inexperienced Captain, George Pollard; Cillian Murphy as second mate Matthew Joy; and Ben Whishaw as novelist Herman Melville, whose inquiries into the event 30 years later helped bring the story to light.

Tom Holland also stars as young seaman Tom Nickerson with Brendan Gleeson as the same man, 30 years later. Spanish actor Jordi Mollà is the captain of another ship, the Archimedes, who tries to warn the Essex of what may lie ahead.

Howard directed from a screenplay by Charles Leavitt, story by Charles Leavitt and Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver, based on the book In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex by Nathaniel Philbrick, winner of the 2000 National Book Award for Nonfiction.

In the Heart of the Sea is a Warner Bros. Pictures presentation, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, a COTT Productions-Enelmar Productions, A.I.E. co-production, a Roth Films/Spring Creek/Imagine Entertainment Production, in association with Kia Jam.

Opening on March 13, 2015, in theatres and IMAX, the film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures. In the Heart of the Sea has been rated PG-13 by the MPAA for intense sequences of action and peril, brief startling violence, and thematic material.

For more info visit the official In the Heart of the Sea website and “like” In the Heart of the Sea on Facebook.

Synopsis:
In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. But that told only half the story.

In the Heart of the Sea reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic, and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.
