Moth, meet flame. Flame, meet moth. There’s no conceivable way that a movie entitled Sharkansas Women’s Prison Massacre will escape our radar. It’s just so right. Read on for details, an exclusive trailer, and more!

Jim Wynorski directs, Dominque Swain and Traci Lords star.

Synopsis:
When a fracking mishap accidentally rips apart the earth’s crust, the resulting hole opens up a gaping underground water way to a vast and mysterious ocean somewhere deep below. Instantly, giant prehistoric sharks begin wending their way upward toward a murky bog in the heart of the Arkansas Bayou. Unfortunately, for a group of female prisoners on a work detail in the swamp, the deadly sharks attack without warning – pinning a hapless group of intended victims in a small deserted cabin in the heart of the wetlands. Death may be the only means of escape!

A Promising Future for Sci-fi Horror Game Pamela

$

Pamela showed up on my radar a few weeks ago when a trailer depicting a beautifully rendered dystopian future city promised both survival and horror in equal measure. I recently looked into this game being developed by a small team of 4 calling themselves NVYVE studios, and must say that if they can live up to their lofty goals, this might just be a gem in the making.

Taking place in the future city of Eden, a mysterious affliction is causing the citizen’s bones to contort and grow, turning them into hideous monsters. It is unclear how players arrive on the scene or fit into the story, but they are aided by Eden’s sentient AI, the eponymous Pamela. Trapped on the station, Pamela serves as the player’s guide to the world, and I’d be willing to bet she ends up being more Cortana than just a tutorial.

Reminiscent of the themes of Bioshock, the similarities stop there. This ruined utopia isn’t a linear experience, and it is unclear at this point what the end goal even is. The game promises progression in an open world, but whether this will lead to some kind of endgame is still unknown. What is promised is a massive amount of lore and backstory to uncover, as well as various weapons and body modifications that can be collected to increase your chances at survival. As the hideous afflicted residents stick to the shadows, restoring power to certain areas will keep you safer at night when they come out to hunt.

A day and night cycle keeps things tense, as the ever looming nightfall brings out the worst of the afflicted. The game promises “horror at any time of the day,” so I’d be willing to bet this comes out something like dying light, where the daytime afflicted are the most human and nighttime the least. That is interesting is that they have promised that not all the afflicted will be enemies. Each will have their own motives and level of mental degradation, so whether they will be curious about you, attack you, or simply ignore you is up in the air. An interesting concept, and I’m curious to see how they deliver on it.

Probably the most lofty promise is their goal to create a living world. This is a survival game in the modern vein, so you will be expected to scrounge for food, water, and a place to sleep. Supplies are limited on Eden, and they state on their website that the afflicted will all need to scrounge for supplies to survive, consuming resources. This is something we haven’t really seen before, since it is difficult to implement both scarcity and have a large enough abundance of resources to actually supply all of the NPCs’ needs. I’d be willing to bet it comes out something like Dying Light, where loot containers respawn after a set time and distance, as they have stated that the game is not procedurally generated.

Even though it is a unity title, the game looks very good so far, with a unique sci-fi feel and an immersive UI. Statuses, ammo, time, and other information is depicted on displays integrated into your “AARM,” so think the pip-boy from Fallout mixed with the ammo and health hologram display in Dead Space. The term I’ve used for this for a long time is an integrated hud, since there’s nothing to take you out of the idea that it is all within the game world.

Weapons are also unconventional. They state that wars have long since stopped being fought, so what is left is pacification devices for security forces. Whether this means that there won’t be guns at all or if they will just be scarce is unclear, but I’d be willing to bet that this is more just a statement that most of the weapons will be some kind of blue stun lasers. As long as it fits into the world and works, I’m okay battling with angry flashlights.

So open world survival future Bioshock with a Dead Space twist. Last time they made that, it was called System Shock 2, and it was amazing. This one isn’t coming out for a while, with a release goal of 2016, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some kind of playable alpha before that. This is the kind of game that goes perfectly on early access, where the experience of playing and surviving is more important than some kind of story mode with a start and a finish. Keep an eye out for it, and give the developers some love, because it looks good enough so far that I’d really like them to finish. Cross my fingers!

Class of 1984 (Blu-ray)

Class of 1984Starring Perry King, Michael J. Fox, Roddy McDowell, Timothy Van Patten

Directed by Mark L. Lester

Distributed by The Scream Factory

There’s practically a blissful sense of past ignorance when looking back at Mark Lester’s prescient tale of school terror, Class of 1984 (1982). At the time, the film was considered outrageous for suggesting there could someday be metal detectors, drug running, prostitution, handguns, and rampant mayhem of a violent nature seen on high school campuses. Rather than mocking it, perhaps those critics should have looked to it as an omen portending times that were not so far off. The 30+ years that have passed since the film’s release have proven things can indeed be that bad, or worse. Watching the film now, with an awareness of events that have transpired since, nothing seems too extraordinary. But it isn’t designed as an attack on the youth of today, or yesterday. It takes to task the school bureaucracy that allows disruptive students to remain in school, the police who appear powerless against the minor defense, and the parents who are clueless and pandering to their little monsters. All the classic elements of an exploitation film are present, with an end result that’s far more astute than expected.

After an opening title card warns viewers that schools aren’t as bad as the one depicted here… yet, we’re introduced to Andrew Norris (Perry King), the new music teacher at a rough inner city high school. Mr. Norris displays some naiveté, coming from a wholly different environment he believes children need only be given the right tools to learn and they’ll respond positively. Terry Corrigan (Roddy McDowell), the school’s biology teacher, isn’t so optimistic, and he quickly schools Andrew in how things run here. Moments after entering his classroom, Andrew runs into the school’s top gang, led by Peter Stegman (Timothy Van Patten), a brilliant but completely anarchistic punk with a violent streak and a lack of respect for anyone. In constant tow are his sycophants Patsy (Lisa Langois), Barnyard (Keith Knight), Drugstore (Stefan Arngrim), and Fallon (Neil Clifford), each specializing in some form of depravity.

When Mr. Norris starts pushing back against Stegman and his lackeys, the gang takes it upon themselves to make his life a living hell – both professionally and personally. The police sympathize but tell him there’s little they can do aside from monitoring these kids now and busting them once they’re of age. Parents are less helpful. Stegman’s mom (his father is out of the picture) thinks her son is nothing more than a typical teenager and won’t hear a word from Mr. Norris to the contrary. Continued attempts by both Mr. Norris and Corrigan to impugn Stegman’s perceived power are met with increasingly more violent retribution from the gang. When Norris is finally pushed past his breaking point after one such incident, he snaps, leading to a final showdown in the school’s vacant halls.

Mark Lester cites Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange (1971) as a major influence on his film. Similarly, this picture got swept up in controversy prior to release, too. Lester actually had a hard time selling the film in America due to the subject matter and extreme violence, traits that had international buyers eager to put it into their multiplexes. For all of its B-movie trappings – nudity, bloodletting, beatings, racial violence, animal cruelty – there is a strong message at its core imploring authority figures to take more drastic measures in an effort to stop future felons before they’re mired in a life of crime… though perhaps not by employing the methods Mr. Norris is forced into by the film’s bloody climax. Young hoodlums take advantage of being seen as “kids being kids”, and knowing that without hard evidence and reliable eyewitnesses authority figures are nearly powerless to stop them.

Although he’s apparently embarrassed by the film now (being a big-time TV director and all), Timothy Van Patten’s performance as Stegman is superb. He’s the most complex of the film’s characters, allowing only glimpses into the brilliance he keeps hidden away behind a tough exterior. The best scene of the film features Stegman, once again interrupting Mr. Norris music class, banging away on a piano (“Ivory Joe from Kokomo”) before sitting down to play a hauntingly beautiful composition that would qualify him as one of the most talented students in school. The scene illustrates how even a gifted kid can wind up playing with the wrong crowd, squandering talent and heading down a dangerous path in life.

Class of 1984 is a great slice of exploitative cinema, delivering the sort of riotous antics fans want to see while subversively providing much to think about once the credits have rolled. Lester’s material would have been strong with any group of competent actors, but having the likes of Perry King, Van Patten, Roddy McDowell and a young Michael J. Fox (the name a few) elevates it immensely. Add in a theme song from the original king of shock himself, Alice Cooper, and it’s easy to understand why this film and its messages have endured.

While this is certainly an upgrade over the previous DVD edition, don’t expect the film’s 1.78:1 1080p image to look astounding. The most obvious benefits to this HD upgrade are an increase in definition (though not by leaps and bounds) and a slight improvement in color saturation. The palette here is decidedly muted, likely a stylistic choice, and hues very rarely pop off screen. Black levels are inconsistent, often appearing hazy and lacking richness. While detail may be increased to a moderate degree, this is still a soft looking film. The print used is in relatively good shape, with only minor flecks of dirt and a few scratches in the emulsion appearing infrequently. The cinematography allow for minor depth to the image. Grain is intact and filmic; no signs of DNR here.

After ably delivering Alice Cooper’s opening theme, the English DTS-HD MA 5.1 surround sound track shows signs of age and low-budget limitations. Dialogue is mostly clear and free from hiss, with only a few lines exhibiting minor clipping. Lalo Schifrin’s score flows nicely, even if it is hardly remarkable. An almost total lack of worthwhile rear speaker activity makes it clear the remixed multi-channel track is mostly unnecessary, although it does showcase greater range and effects placement than the 2.0 stereo offering. The sound design is pretty flat, with little activity in the low-frequency end and few highs heard. Subtitles are included in English.

Kicking things off is an audio commentary with director Mark Lester and Anchor Bay DVD producer Perry Martin. After letting everyone know this is his favorite film he’s directed, Lester delivers a fantastic commentary that touches on every aspect of the film including influences, research, location shooting (very few sets were used), ratings woes, and a minor change to the ending that made a major difference. There are almost no lulls here and everything Lester says is interesting and informative. Great listen.

“The Girls Next Door – Interview with Lisa Langlois (Patsy) and Erin Noble (Deneen)” covers standard ground, with both girls discussing their respective roles in the film and what it was like working with all of the other principal actors. Noble’s audio is a bit screwy, at times cutting out.

“History Repeats Itself – Interview with Mark Lester (director) and Lalo Schifrin (music)” runs for just over twenty minutes. Lester dominates here, touching on most of the major points that were made in his commentary track. Schifrin only has little bits to add, though he is wearing an awesome tiger sweater that I want to own.

“Do What You Love – Interview with Perry King (Andrew Norris)” comes in at over 45 minutes. Not content to merely speak about this film, King basically covers his entire career from start to present, giving a few minutes to each film in which he’s been involved. It’s comprehensive, unexpected and totally captivating.

“Blood & Blackboards” (misspelled “Blood & Backboards” on the menu) is a carryover featurette from the DVD. After watching the other interviews and hearing the commentary, this feels redundant, though there are a few additional faces present here that are absent from the new features.

A few trailers & TV spots, as well as a still gallery, finish off the extra features.

10 Planned Sequels That We Never Got to See

The movie-making business is a fickle one, with projects oftentimes appearing one day and then completely disappearing the next. There are so many factors that go into making a movie that it’s quite frankly a miracle that so many movies do end up getting made. But what about the ones that are planned and announced, but never actually materialize?

There are a whole lot of them, and today we take a look at a handful of horror sequels that found themselves (perhaps forever) stuck in the dreaded Development Hell!

before2

BEFORE THE MASK : THE RETURN OF LESLIE VERNON

One of the most frustrating stories in recent years within the horror genre is the story of Before The Mask, the sequel to 2006’s utterly brilliant cult classic Behind The Mask that, for whatever reason, just can’t seem to get off the ground. Described as a “spreemake,” meaning a sequel, prequel and a remake all rolled into one, Before The Mask took to Kickstarter a couple years back, after Anchor Bay refused to fund it, and the campaign unfortunately only raised less than half of its $450,000 goal.

Despite the fact that the script is written, and director Scott Glosserman is itching to bring Leslie Vernon back to life, the project is at this point in time dead in the water, due to a lack of funding. Though if all the great slashers have taught us anything, it’s that they’ll always be back for more.

blair

THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT 3

Rumors of a third installment in the Blair Witch Project franchise have been circulating around the internet since the release of the second film back in 2000, which was at the time supposedly going to be a prequel to the two films, telling the story of the titular Blair Witch. Many years later, in 2009, the writing/directing duo of the first one (Eduardo Sanchez & Daniel Myrick) announced that they would taking back the reigns of the series, and were hard at work on a second sequel, reporting that they had come up with an idea that they were really excited about.

Talks resumed in 2011 when Sanchez was promoting his film Lovely Molly, telling the press that the sequel would disregard the events of Book of Shadows, and feature appearances by the cast members of the original film. He said the ball was in Lionsgate’s court, and to this day they’ve still never taken that ball and ran with it. “The film seems inevitable to me,” Sanchez recently told us, and he seems confident that it’s only a matter of time.

candyman

CANDYMAN 4

The closest a fourth installment in the Candyman franchise ever got to being made was back in 2004, when the film was being actively developed. According to Tony Todd, legal issues halted the production, as no one at the time was really sure who owned the rights to the franchise. In 2009 Todd began talking about Candyman 4 again, saying he had been coming up with ideas for it and talking it over with Deon Taylor, a director who he was working with at the time.

Right around the same time, there were rumors that the franchise would be getting a complete remake, without Tony Todd in the lead role, though not a peep has been heard about either project in several years. Maybe if we all collectively chant his name in the mirror, the Candyman will soon return.

“Supernatural” Episode 10.18 – “Book of the Damned” (airs 4/15/15)
FELICIA DAY RETURNS AS CHARLIE — Charlie (guest star Felicia Day) calls Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) to tell them she found the Book of the Dead, which could help remove the Mark of Cain.  The Winchesters race to her after she tells them she’s been shot by a man named Jacob Styne (guest star Jeff Branson), who says the book belongs to his family and he won’t rest until he gets it back.

Meanwhile, Castiel (Misha Collins) and Metatron (guest star Curtis Armstrong) take a road trip to find Castiel’s grace, but they hit a couple of bumps along the way.  PJ Pesce directed this episode written by Robbie Thompson.

Bates Motel: What’s Ahead in the Remaining Season 3 Episodes

A&E recently hosted a roundtable interview with “Bates Motel” star Max Thieriot (Dylan) plus two of this season’s stand-out guest stars, Kenny Johnson (Caleb) and Ryan Hurst (creepy Chick); and while they were tight-lipped on the details, they did promise that many of our most pressing questions will be answered by the end of tomorrow night’s Episode 3.06, “Norma Louise.”  Which of course means that others will be raised.

Here’s what people should be looking forward to as Season 3 approaches its finale:

Thieriot said, “…I think all the family dynamics just get tested even more… I think they probably keep going.  [Executive producers] Kerry [Ehrin] and Carlton [Cuse] have a great way of just going in these directions and then pulling you back into a completely opposite direction… the push/pull type of thing is pretty amazing for the characters and also, you know, the family dynamic… I’m just fascinated and intrigued by the family dynamic, and they just push it about as far as I think they could. Obviously, because it’s ‘Bates Motel’…”

Johnson added, “I think also… you can obviously expect a good cliffhanging finish that I think everybody will be really excited to see and shocked by. And for me what’s kind of cool is this season we sort of really start to see Norman… unravel… it seems like every episode he starts to lose it just a little more and just a little more. So I think by the end of Season 3, he’s changed a lot since Season 1, and I think it’s cool because [it’s] something obviously the audience is wanting to see happen.”

They agreed that Freddie [Highmore] has done “an amazing job this year with his transformation… he’s elevated it to a whole new place, and… between now and the end of the season, it’s just going to take you to yet again a whole other place.”

And lest you think we left out Hurst’s character, the “suspicious and mysterious” Chick, about whom we’ve learned so little so far, we were assured that we’re all “going to find out a lot more about Chick… a lot more.”

“Bates Motel” Episode 3.06 – “Norma Louise” (airs 4/13/15)
Norma (Vera Farmiga) considers a life outside of White Pine Bay, leaving Norman (Freddie Highmore) in a vulnerable position. Dylan (Max Thieriot) and Emma (Olivia Cooke) bond while helping Norman through a rough night.

Romero (Nestor Carbonell) is confronted by a new threat, and Caleb (Kenny Johnson) makes a difficult decision after learning of Norma’s sudden departure.

Filming is well under way on F. Javier Gutierrez’ Rings, which will be the third installment of the American franchise. The film is set 13 years after the remake of The Ring, and on tap today is your first look at the action. So read on!

The on-set image comes courtesy of The Times Herald, part of a story about Rings being filmed in Grantville, Georgia. Interestingly, “The Walking Dead” recently filmed in the very same city, so fans of the show can expect to see some familiar locations when Samara returns to the big screen.

In the meantime, look down yonder for your first look at star Alex Roe in Rings!

The sequel also stars Johnny Galecki as Gabriel, a handsome, pleasure-seeking professor who mentors and helps boyfriend and girlfriend duo Holt (Alex Roe) and Julia (Matilda Lutz). Scream 4‘s Aimee Teegarden rounds out the main cast.

Rings will hit theaters on November 13, 2015.

    F. Javier Gutierrez is directing from a script written by Akiva Goldsman, David Loucka, and Jacob Aaron Estes.

Based on a Japanese cult success, the first U.S. film went on to gross $249 million at the worldwide box office. That was enough to justify a sequel, which didn’t match the first one’s B.O. power but still grossed $160 million worldwide.

10 Horror Movies That Were Turned Into Board Games

Retro video games have become a big topic of discussion here in the horror community in recent years, with NES efforts like Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street experiencing a strange resurgence in popularity. A handful of other horror films have received the video game treatment over the years, including The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Thing and Halloween.

But what about board games? It’s not often that fans talk about horror movie board games, which might lead you to believe that they simply don’t exist. But the truth is that many horror movies over the years have received their own board games, from The Shining to Alligator. Yes. Alligator.

Let’s give those horror movie-inspired board games some love, shall we?!

      dawngame

      DAWN OF THE DEAD

Right around the time Dawn of the Dead shambled its way into theaters, a company called Simulations Publications, Inc. put out a board game based on the film, which allowed players to either become the zombies or the surviving humans. The game board was based on the shopping mall that the majority of Romero’s second ‘Dead‘ outing took place in, and the object of the game was to either kill the humans or secure the mall and eliminate the zombies – depending on which group of characters any given player decided to be. This game has become increasingly rare over the years, and typically sells for a couple hundred dollars.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET #1

Two years before the release of the infamous Nightmare on Elm Street NES game came Victory Entertainment’s Nightmare on Elm Street board game, the first of two Elm Street-based board games that saw release in the decade that Freddy Krueger dominated. The board set up like a nightmarish dream maze, the object of the game was to navigate your game piece through the maze, and make it out before Freddy got a hold of you and ended your journey. Game cards dictated your movements, either escorting you through the maze and into the safety of the real world, or serving you up to Freddy on a silver platter.

      elmgame

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET #2

So popular was Freddy in the 80s that he starred in a second board game in 1989, released by Cardinal Industries. Dubbed A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Freddy Game, the game was much more elaborate than the previously released one, with three-dimensional panels bringing the board to life. The game board depicted Freddy Krueger’s house and the basic gist was that one of the players was possessed by Freddy, while the other players were tasked with finding out whose body he inhabited and banishing him back to Hell. The game even incorporated the fears of each character/game piece, just like the movies did.

Teen Wolf Season 5 Teaser Changes the Rules

MTV’s “Teen Wolf” returns in June for its two-part, 20-episode fifth season, and a new official teaser titled “Villain” has arrived. Start speculating now as to who said villain might be!

As we learned previously, fan favorite Tyler Hoechlin won’t be back as Derek Hale (at least not on a regular basis), but there should be enough action to keep audiences tuning in.  As exec producer Jeff Davis revealed previously, “The tagline of this season that we use in the writers room is: ‘The rules have changed.’ The 20-episode season will be very much the world of the supernatural being turned upside down. The big fear of Season 5 [is]: Who’s going to go away? Much of the previous seasons were about Scott finding and building a pack; this is going to see him possibly losing it — possibly ending up on his own without his friends by his side, wondering how he’s going to face life without them.
