M. Night Shyamalan on the Rules and Tone of Wayward Pines

$

0

M. Night Shyamalan was a bit out of his element directing the pilot for “Wayward Pines,” but as evidenced by this promo video that includes brief interviews with him and and few of show’s stars, it didn’t take him long to adapt to the world of TV.

And having already seen the episode, we hope his name shows up in the credits of future installments as well.  The show started off great, and we can’t wait to see more.

Curious? We also have a new teaser to share that’s introduced by the director.

About “Wayward Pines”:
Fox Broadcasting Company (FOX) and Fox International Channels present the 10-episode, intense psychological thriller “WAYWARD PINES.” The highly anticipated event series, based on a best-selling novel and brought to life by suspenseful storyteller M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Signs) and executive-produced by Shyamalan, Donald De Line, Chad Hodge, and Ashwin Rajan, will premiere Thursday, May 14 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), on FOX, while also debuting simultaneously in more than 125 countries across Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe, and Latin America. The global “WAYWARD PINES” debut will be the world’s largest day-and-date launch for a scripted series ever.

The series stars Academy Award nominee Matt Dillon (Crash) as a Secret Service agent on a mission to find two missing federal agents in the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, ID. In addition to Dillon, the stellar cast includes Academy and Emmy Award winner Melissa Leo (The Fighter), Academy Award nominee Terrence Howard (Crash, Hustle & Flow), Carla Gugino (“Entourage”), Shannyn Sossamon (“How to Make It in America”), Toby Jones (Infamous, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Reed Diamond (“24,” Much Ado About Nothing), Tim Griffin (“Prime Suspect”), Charlie Tahan (Charlie St. Cloud), and Academy Award and Emmy Award nominee Juliette Lewis (Cape Fear).

“WAYWARD PINES” is a production of FX Productions. The series was developed for television by Hodge (“The Playboy Club,” “Runaway”) and executive-produced by De Line (Green Lantern, The Italian Job), Rajan (Devil), Hodge, and Shyamalan.  Hodge wrote and Shyamalan directed the premiere episode. “Like” “WAYWARD PINES” on Facebook at facebook.com/WaywardPines. The Ghouls Puts a Curse on Chinese Cinemas This December

Grave robbing is risky business. Just ask the main characters of director Wu Ershan’s upcoming adventure/horror flick The Ghouls. Based on the popular online novel Ghost Blows Out the Light by Chinese author Zhang Muye, the film tells the story of two grave robbers who find themselves battling a horrible curse during the 1980s. In order to survive the experience with their hides intact, our heroes team up with an American archaeologist to seek answers hidden throughout China.

To help bring the flick to life, Wu Ershan (Painted Skin: The Resurrection) tapped Chinese actors Chen Kun, Huang Bo, Xia Yu, Shu Qi, and Angelababy. Production wrapped in New York earlier this year, which means The Ghouls should arrive in Chinese theaters this December. As of this writing, a Stateside release hasn’t been hammered out. My guess is probably sometime next year.

Although we don’t have any promotional images or an official trailer to share just yet, take a glance at the posters below. The Ghouls arrives in China on December 18.

What happens when a handful of internet pranksters decide to pull the ultimate joke on their buddies at a cabin in the middle of nowhere? Unspeakable terror and mayhem, of course! Director AJ Wedding’s The Jokesters dropped a trailer last year, although details about the project’s release were few and far between. Thankfully, the folks over at Fangoria managed to get their bloody mitts on an official release date for the aforementioned horror outing.

Before we get to that tasty info, check out the official synopsis.

The Internet sensation ‘Master Pranksters’ decide to take it to the extreme for their season finale. When the leader of the group, Ethan, announces that he is getting married and leaving the gang and the pranks behind, the rest of the founding members decide to pull off one final stunt; a “cabin in the woods” nightmare on their friend’s honeymoon. What follows is a spiral descent into terror when the prank goes too far and the members of the group actually start dying.

The Jokesters officials hits DVD and VOD courtesy of Random Media on July 21. In the meantime, swing by the flick’s official website and check out the trailer below.

Fox Gives The Frankenstein Code a Series Order and Puts The Following Out of Its Misery

Out with the old and in with the… older?  Amidst the flurry of TV news that is closing out this busy week, Fox has announced a series order for “The Frankenstein Code” (formerly just “Frankenstein”), loosely based on Mary Shelley’s classic tale, and the cancellation of “The Following,” a show that probably would have been better served as a “one and done” miniseries.

In any event, per Deadline, it’s farewell to Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy’s pulpy portrayal of Ryan Hardy and Joe Carroll’s sick and twisted love story… and hello to our modern day “Creature,” aka Jimmy Pritchard.

“The Frankenstein Code” hails from writer/executive producer Rand Ravich and executive producer Howard Gordon.  It stars Rob Kazinsky, Philip Baker Hall, Dilshad Vadsaria, Adhir Kalyan, Tim DeKay, and Ciara Bravo. In a twist, Kazinsky and Hall portray the same character at different ages.

It centers on Ray Pritchard (Hall), a morally corrupt retired cop who is given a second chance at life when he is brought back from the dead. Now younger and stronger, Pritchard (Kazinsky) will have to choose between his old temptations and his new sense of purpose.

Privy to information only a dead man could possess, this former Marine and L.A. County Sheriff teams with his son, an FBI Agent (DeKay), to take down the bad guys. However, though his body is new, his thoughts and desires are those of a 75-year-old badass curmudgeon.

Anarchy Parlor Trailer Inked in Blood

A trailer is here for co-writers/directors Kenny Gage and Devon Downs’ “tourists in peril” feature Anarchy Parlor, and we have it for you ready for tramp stamping.

Anarchy Parlor Release Details:
Gravitas Ventures plans a theatrical release for Anarchy Parlor on June 19, 2015, with a pre-theatrical rollout on VOD May 12, 2015.

Anarchy Parlor is a horror film about a mysterious nomad simply known as “The Artist” who practices a dark art form passed down through the generations. He creates much more than tattoos for tourists who visit his Lithuanian Tattoo Parlor.

Shot entirely on location in Vilnius, Lithuania, Anarchy Parlor features two well-known cast members in the tattoo and horror world. Heavily tattooed lead actor Robert LaSardo (Death Race, “Nip/Tuck,” Human Centipede 3) portrays “The Artist,” and Sara Fabel (well-known Finnish tattoo artist and model) plays his seductive apprentice “Uta.” Anarchy Parlor will be a frighteningly, terrific thrill to the die-hard fans.

Anarchy Parlor is written and directed by Kenny Gage (Raze) and Devon Downs. This will be the first in the franchise of a new twist on horror films with “The Artist,” an amazingly creepy character that rivals “Jigsaw” in Saw or “Hannibal Lecter” in The Silence of the Lambs.

“Our conceit from the outset was to center the story around the traditional ‘bad guy’ archetype instead of the victims,” said Gage.

Downs adds, “Our film is scary, yes, intense, yes, gory, hell yes, but it is also fun!”

Anarchy Parlor is produced by Bill Ceresia (Raze), Andrew Pagana (Raze), Thomas Mahoney (Girl in the Photographs), Todd Slater, and Brett Donowho. The executive producer is Tony Distefano for A-Team Entertainment Inc.

Dread Central’s own Matt Serafini has a new baby on the way, and we’re not just referring to his physical child. Read on for the skinny on his latest book, Devil’s Row, which may very much be required reading for werewolf fans!

Devil’s Row is a prequel to Feral, set 300 years before, and following three hunters on their quest to kill the infamous werewolf, Elisabeth Luna.

While Feral was invasive small-town horror, Devil’s Row is a vengeance-driven western transported to 18th century Europe, a bloody cocktail of gunfighters, werewolves, and witches.

Severed Press is publishing this for release on Tuesday, May 19th. You can pre-order the eBook via Amazon right now, or order the physical copy when it’s available on May 19th.

Synopsis:
They came together for a blood hunt. Sebastian and Timothy are thief-takers driven by the lure of money, while Garrick is a soldier pursuing malevolent forces that shouldn’t exist. All of them are eager to find the rampaging she-wolf, Elisabeth Luna.

Following her across the Holy Roman Empire and beyond, they clash on a mountaintop high above the Moldavian wilderness. Elisabeth is taken by surprise, mortally wounded and left for dead.

Both predator and prey must navigate a war-torn land where the servants of darkness have staked a claim. For Elisabeth, it’s about taking revenge on those who’ve opposed her. For the hunters, it’s racing toward a sanctuary that may already be beyond their reach.

Before Feral consumed an entire town in lycanthropic fury, werewolves stalked Devil’s Row.

Arrow’s Katie Cassidy to Fight Off The Wolves at the Door

John R. Leonetti, who helmed the disappointing Annabelle, isn’t wasting time getting behind the camera once again as word of his next project, The Wolves at the Door, has come. Based on the premise alone – plus its leading lady – we’re cautiously optimistic…

Per THR, the film takes its cues from the Manson Family murders that took place in Los Angeles in 1969.

Katie Cassidy (“Arrow,” “Supernatural,” A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)) will play a part inspired by actress Sharon Tate in the micro-budget horror film being made by New Line. Insiders say the project is a home invasion thriller set in the 1960s but is not a retelling of the actual events, nor will it reference any Manson connection.

Peter Safran is producing; the aim is to start shooting mid-May in Los Angeles.

ABC Family’s Shadowhunters Gains Two More Cast Members

ABC Family has quite a hot little project on its hands with “Shadowhunters.” Just check out all the Twitter hysteria today over the latest two bits of casting news for the show.

MTV breaks down the new characters for us:

  • Alec Lightwood (Daddario; Delivery Man, Cabin Fever remake), Isabelle’s older brother, is the most serious Shadowhunter. As the eldest of the group, he has a strict moral code, which makes it hard for him to express his feelings. He’s tortured by his romantic love for Jace, who is his adoptive brother.
  • Luke Garroway (Mustafa; Horrible Bosses; ex-Old Spice guy) is an NYPD detective investigating a string of “demonic” murders (a change from the books that should result in an expanded role for him). Being Jocelyn Fray’s best friend, Luke feels a fatherly instinct to protect Jocelyn’s daughter, Clary, the plucky protagonist at the center of “Shadowhunters.” He also harbors feelings for Jocelyn, but that’s for another story. Once a strong and powerful Shadowhunter, he has since become the thing he once hated most — a werewolf pack leader.

McG will direct the premiere episode.

“Shadowhunters” follows 18-year-old Clary Fray (Kat McNamara), who finds out on her birthday that she is not who she thinks she is but rather comes from a long line of Shadowhunters – human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons. When her mother, Jocelyn, is kidnapped, Clary is thrown into the world of demon hunting with mysterious Shadowhunter Jace (Dominic Sherwood) and her best friend, Simon (Alberto Rosende). Now living among faeries, warlocks, vampires, and werewolves, Clary begins a journey of self-discovery as she learns more about her past and what her future may hold.

Some late-breaking TV news has just arrived… Fox has given a series order to “Lucifer,” based on yet another comic book character.  “Lucifer,” written by Tom Kapinos and directed by Len Wiseman for Warner Bros. TV, DC Comics, and Jerry Bruckheimer TV, stars Tom Ellis (Rush).

Per Deadline, Kapinos (“Californication”), who also had “Dead People” in the mix at The CW, was not very involved in the pilot, and the project is in the process of securing a showrunner. Kapinos and Wiseman (“Sleepy Hollow,” Underworld) will executive produce with Jerry Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman, and Ildy Modrovich.

Bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, Lucifer (Ellis) resigns his throne and abandons his kingdom for the gorgeous, shimmering insanity of Los Angeles, where he gets his kicks helping the LAPD punish criminals. Ellis’ co-stars include Lauren German, Rachael Harris, DB Woodside, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Nicholas Gonzalez, and Scarlett Estevez.

Space Monster Numagirasu Stomps Across Japan in Latest Trailer

If you’re a fan of Japanese kaiju flicks, particularly those that feature enormous monsters (daikaiju) laying waste to vast urban landscapes, then you should keep your eyes peeled for Space Monster Numagirasu, an upcoming production put together by a handful of talented students at the Tokyo Polytechnic University. What’s especially cool about this particular outing is the fact that the filmmakers are utilizing an admittedly old-school approach: traditional special effects. For those of us who’ve grown tired of CGI monsters, this is certainly good news.

Unfortunately, that’s all the info we have at the moment. Then again, when you’re dealing with a flick like this, the plot generally takes a back seat to the on-screen mayhem. Big thanks to Undead Backbrain for spotting this one. Swing by the aforementioned website for some nifty behind-the-scenes photos from Space Monster Numagirasu. In the meantime take a look at the trailer below.

Psychological Thriller Hungry Hearts Gets a Suspenseful New Trailer

Before he blasts off for a galaxy far, far away in director J.J. Abrams’ highly-anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens, “Girls” alum Adam Driver contends with a very unstable wife in director Saverio Costanzo’s psychological thriller Hungry Hearts. Don’t let the first few seconds of the trailer fool you — there’s something dark and sinister happening here.

The film garnered solid reviews after its screening at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, which is probably why IFC Films didn’t hesitate to snatch it up. The flick is scheduled for release in theaters and on VOD this summer.

MovieWeb describes the flick as follows:

New York City newlyweds Jude (Adam Driver, “Girls”) and Mina (Alba Rohrwacher, I Am Love) have a seemingly perfect relationship. But things take an unsettling turn with the birth of their son. Convinced that the baby must be kept free of all contaminants, Mina develops fanatical obsessions with veganism, cleanliness, and purity that may kill the child unless Jude can stop her.

Hungry Hearts looks to satisfy your craving for psychological terror on June 5th.

Forbidden Empire Finally Sees Release on VOD

After what seems like ages, director Oleg Stepchenko’s fantasy/horror flick Forbidden Empire is finally seeing the proverbial light of day. In addition to heading to a theater near you, the film will make its long-awaited debut on VOD. As a wise man once said, better late than never.

According to Quiet Earth, the film first popped up on radars back in 2008. Seven years later, Entertainment One is finally giving the retelling of the 1967 film Viy its due.

Check out the synopsis below:

Early 18th century. Cartographer Jonathan Green undertakes a scientific voyage from Europe to the East. Having passed through Transylvania and crossed the Carpathian Mountains, he finds himself in a small village lost in impassable woods. Nothing but chance and heavy fog could bring him to this cursed place. People who live here do not resemble any other people which the traveler saw before that. The villagers, having dug a deep moat to defend themselves from the rest of the world, share a naive belief that they could save themselves from evil, failing to understand that evil has made its nest in their souls and is waiting for an opportunity to gush out upon the world.

Forbidden Empire, which stars Jason Flemyng (Mirrors, Stonehearst Asylum), hits VOD and select theaters on May 22. The trailer awaits your undivided attention.

The Thing with Two Heads Grows on Blu-ray in One Month

Whether you consider it a bona fide piece of 70’s schlock or a subversive work of b-cinema with sly subtext about race relations at the time, there’s no denying The Thing with Two Heads is a true cult classic long overdue for a hi-def upgrade.

Olive Films went berserk the other day announcing a slew of titles they’re bringing to Blu-ray on June 23rd: the Brian Bosworth biker flick Stone Cold, Josh Brolin’s 80s skateboarding flick Thrashin’, the Stephen Baldwin/Laurence Fishburne prisoners-on-the-run flick Fled, the 80’s murder mystery The Mean Season, the early Anthony Michael Hall/Robert Downey, Jr./Uma Thurman high school football comedy Johnny Be Good, and the 2004 stinker Soul Plane.

There was one more title that may of be interest to horror fans: the 1972 cult favorite The Thing with Two Heads.

Synopsis:
The Thing with Two Heads is a film that answers the age-old question: Are two heads better than one?

Despite his deteriorating health, incredibly rich and deeply racist brain surgeon Maxwell Kirshner (Ray Milland, The Lost Weekend) plans to be around for a very long time. What better way to achieve his goal than to transplant his still cognitive noggin onto the body of a healthy human being? Having performed similar experimental surgeries on animals, Maxwell convinces his colleagues to perform the groundbreaking and unsanctioned medical procedure on him – the first successful head-graft.

With his body in rapid decline, Maxwell’s head is transplanted onto the first available body. And that would be death row inmate Jack Moss (Rosey Grier; Skyjacked, Timber Tramps). Did we forget to mention that Jack Moss is black?

The Thing with Two Heads, directed by Lee Frost (The Black Gestapo, Private Obsession) from a screenplay by Lee Frost, Wes Bishop, and James Gordon White, co-stars Don Marshall (Uptown Saturday Night, Terminal Island), Roger Perry (Count Yorga, Vampire), William Smith (Conan the Barbarian, The Outsiders), and Jerry Butler (A Bronx Tale, La Bamba).

Olive’s The Thing with Two Heads Blu-ray will run you $29.95 . That seems awfully steep for a disc that by all accounts will be bare bones. In fact, of all the previously listed new titles coming out on June 23rd, the only disc reportedly with extras will be Soul Plane. Seriously, freaking Soul Plane?

Tales from the Darkside Reboot May Still See the Light of Day

$

The CW may have passed on a revamped version of the 80’s horror anthology series “Tales from the Darkside,” but a slew of potential cable and digital outlets might be willing to take a walk on the dark side.

While the “Tales from the Darkside” reboot written by author Joe Hill (Horns, Locke & Key) and produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (part of the team behind “Sleepy Hollow”) may not have been picked up to series by The CW Network, the show may get a second shot at Syfy, MTV, VH1, or possibly even Hulu.

According to Deadline, none of these outlets has actually seen the pilot yet, which by all accounts was passed on by The CW due to concerns over the show’s anthology format. Seeing as how The CW is slowly transforming into “The DC Comics Channel,” perhaps the series should have been marketed as “Tales from the Darkseid.”

Whether anything comes of their curiosity remains to be seen (much like the pilot). Just keep one thing in mind: The Darkside is always there, waiting for us to enter – waiting to enter us. Until next time, try to enjoy the daylight.
