Interview: Toa Fraser Talks Walking The Dead Lands

Today, May 29, director Toa Fraser’s unique and brutal journey into the world of warring Māori tribes, The Dead Lands, makes its way to UK cinemas with a DVD release to follow on June 1. We took the opportunity to sit down with Fraser and chat about the film, the decision to shoot it entirely in the Māori language, balancing the fantastical with the historic, and more.

So pack your bags, patus and taiahas… ’cause we’re off to The Dead Lands

Toa Fraser

Dread Central: Was it a difficult ‘sell’ to get The Dead Lands funded and off the ground initially, given its uniqueness and the intention to have it completely in the Māori language?

Toa Fraser: Matthew Metcalfe, my producer, offered the script to me and it was written in English, but Glenn Standring, who wrote it, always intended for it to be spoken in Māori. We had quite a short conversation about whether we should go ahead with doing it in Māori – obviously, the idea of doing it in English was a real option, but we both agreed that it was a much more exciting idea to do it in Māori, and it turned out that the people we asked to come on board to make the movie agreed with us. I’m grateful to them because it really imbues the whole movie… the whole ethos and production process with a really unique responsibility and sensibility and a cool vibe.

DC: The Māori language itself is obviously still alive and well, but did the main cast already speak it fluently or did they have to be trained?

TF: Lawrence Makoare, who plays the warrior with no name, and James Rolleston, who plays Hongi, the boy… neither [of them] are fluent speakers. The only real fluent speakers in the main cast were Te Kohe Tuhaka, who plays Wirepa, the main baddie, and Raukura Turei, who plays a warrior woman that the heroes come across during the story.

So it was a learning process for a lot of the cast, and indeed a learning process for me because I don’t speak Māori [either]. So we were all coming at it with different levels of expertise, and the cast led a lot of the sharing of knowledge and expertise. It was really a great ethos that we worked with, and [everyone] supported each other.

DC: So you weren’t put entirely in the hands of language consultants…

TF: We worked with Tainui Stephens, who was our co-producer, and Scotty Morrison, who translated the script. Tainui was on set every day and a very close part of the performance team. We did work with language consultants, too, but there was much expertise within the cast as well. Another thing to say is that generation of [the cast’s] characters – the skills that they had to take on – wasn’t just to do with language; it was also to do with the physicality and the weaponry. And so there was a whole sort of holistic learning curve that everybody worked together on.

DC: Has the language itself actually remained the same in its modern version as it was at the time which The Dead Lands represents?

TF: Actually, that’s a great question. Scotty Morrison, who translated the English, is one of only twelve [people who can speak the older forms]. He’s a very esteemed speaker of the language; [yet, he’s a] young dude. He kind of went back to a more formal and classical way of speaking that surprised even a lot of the native speakers in the cast. For instance, Wairangi Koopu, who’s a former rugby league player and plays one of the baddies, he’s a very fluent speaker himself… but I remember him coming in to his audition and going “Whoa, I knew Scotty translated this ’cause it’s very hard!” (laughs)

So I suppose the equivalent would be Elizabethan English? And that kind of fits with the high-falutin’ Shakespearian performance, especially for [the character of] Wirepa… they’re all sort of ‘lord’ this and ‘betrothed’ that, and that kind of stuff.

DC: Going back to what you said about the actors taking on the elements of physicality required for the film – was it a big change for you as a director to shoot so many action sequences? Did that pose much of a challenge to you?

TF: Well, I grew up watching action movies, so I don’t know why I started my career working in theatre and drama stuff. I always wanted to make James Bond and Indiana Jones movies. We didn’t know how good we had it in the ’80s and ’90s with movies like ‘Die Hard’ and ‘Lethal Weapon’… all of those great, bloodthirsty, awesome John McTiernan type movies… but obviously at the start of my career I kind of paid my dues and did some more drama and comedy, dialogue-driven things.

I really wanted to change direction after doing ‘My Talks with Dean Spanley’… partly because we shot a small part of the story in New Zealand in the summer time – in fact, Xavier Horan, who plays Rangi in the film, Wirepa’s right-hand man, he played a small cameo as Peter O’Toole’s son in ‘Dean Spanley’ – and it was really at that moment, when we were shooting that, that I thought, “Man, I really would like to make an action movie with somebody like Xavier.”

Out in the sunshine… in the grit and the grubby, grimy, sandy, dusty, salty… out in the elements. Something lean and mean and muscular. It took a long time to figure out what that would be, but Matthew Metcalfe, my producer, and I worked together on a ballet film, ‘Giselle’, immediately before ‘The Dead Lands’. It was based on the Royal New Zealand production of that show, starring Gillian Murphy, who’s one of the world’s best dancers. I learned a lot about shooting choreography through that process, so [it felt like a] natural progression [to go] from ballet to the kind of raw performances and choreography that we were striving to get for this.

DC: There’s a focus here also on the psychological side of warfare, which historically the Maori were exceptionally good at. How did you approach that? Was it all in the script, or did you allow the actors to mostly bring it themselves?

TF: Lots of it was in the script, but even though it was in the script, there was still a way to make this movie that was more a straight out Jean-Claude Van Damme type thing, that ignored that [psychological element]… but I loved it and have spent a lot of time thinking about stuff like that over the last few years.

Really, the moment it coalesced for me was when Lawrence Makoare came in for his audition. Liz Mullane, who was our casting director, suggested Lawrence very strongly – and I was quite reluctant because I’d only seen him in ‘Lord of the Rings’, buried beneath prosthetics, and the worst James Bond film ever… the one with Halle Berry that Lee Tamahori directed… he was a James Bond baddie/henchman called Mr. Kil, I think, [in that one].

So I was suspicious… well, not suspicious, but I didn’t quite recognise his potential. But he came in and he did a scene and it was really good and quite moving. I gave him a very small, very simple bit of direction and he did another performance of the same scene and it was amazing. I cried. Liz cried. He cried. Stephen Butterworth, our reader, cried… we all sat down in circle on the ground and didn’t say anything for fifteen minutes or so. That moment really showed me the kind of gravity that the characters could bring.

DC: There’s an intriguing level of magic and mysticism and supernatural elements such as speaking with the dead and visiting ancestors. The audience always has an outside view of that, so while it may appear real to the characters, there’s always room for a grounded explanation, for example hallucinogenic mushrooms or shamanistic herbs. Was the film ever more fantastical or overt in its approach to this in the early stages of the script?

TF: I would say “no”. The balance was about the same as it is now. But I was always excited about the mystical… the combination of a real kind of earthy, muscular world where people get cut up and wounded, and a more kind of mystical, immortal world. For me, the big change that I brought to the table in that regard was that it was really important for me that there were stakes involved. I didn’t want anybody in the film that is involved in fighting to be invincible, or to have an immortal type of [feel to them]. The conversation that the Warrior has about whether he’s a spirit or a real man is kind of key to me. It was one of the exciting parts of the process.

DC: While the action elements of the story were obviously a big draw for you in terms of The Dead Lands, given your previous body of work, do you think that you’re a filmmaker more interested in aspects of culture than anything else? In this film particularly, the action and violence feel organic within the culture… your previous films have dealt with family culture and tradition also. Is this something that you actively focus on?

TF: That question’s quite tricky to answer… I consider myself an actor’s director. So when I’m working with actors… we’re always looking for ways to find the humanity. Often that comes through specificity, relating to place and time and culture. One of the things that was really liberating to me working on ‘The Dead Lands’ was to work in a more mythical place, in a time not really defined.

DC: Yeah… something that feels “different”…

TF: Yeah. Interestingly, I felt that you can illuminate different parts of humanity in a more fantastical setting than you can in a more realistic setting. Even though, with my more sort of drama/dialogue films, I remember really holding the idea of… I can’t remember what the exact words were… but I had a key phrase of something about “transcending authenticity”. Authenticity and a strong relationship to place is very important, but at the same time I feel like movies should take reality to somewhere else – and they do anyway because as soon as you put a frame around something, you’re changing it.

Many thanks for Toa for taking the time out to speak with us. As mentioned, keep an eye out for The Dead Lands in select cinemas from May 29 and DVD from June 1 courtesy of Icon Film Distribution.

2015 Sitges Film Festival Crossing the Atlantic with the Sitges America Tour

The Sitges Film Festival is one we’ve been dreaming of attending for several years, and this year, instead of having to travel to Spain, several of the fest’s previous entries are coming to America!

From the Press Release:
The cinema seen at the Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia can now also be enjoyed in the USA on October 16th and 17th, coinciding with Sitges 2015, thanks to the Sitges America Tour, a circuit including five different films screened around theaters in several North American cities. Yet another new step towards internationalizing the Sitges Film Festival, following another recent experience in Italy.

The Sitges America Tour is born from an agreement between the Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia and the Shoreline Entertainment Distribution Company, in an effort to internationalize the Festival, to put it on the map for American audiences and to contribute to strengthening its position as the number one fantastic genre film festival in the world. The Sitges America Tour will be programming five films at different theaters belonging to the company Theatres at Mall of America which are all previously unreleased in the United States and that reflect the essence and profile that set Sitges apart as the top fantastic film festival in the world.

The first title that has been confirmed to be screened during the Sitges America Tour is El incidente, a Mexican sci-fi film directed by Isaac Ezban, which tells two parallel stories about a series of characters trapped in illogical, endless spaces. Two brothers and a cop on an infinite staircase and a family traveling down a highway that stretches out way beyond the horizon. A psychological horror piece that we had the chance to see at Sitges 2014 and that is its director’s feature length film debut.

With this initiative, the Festival expands its horizons and bolsters its commitment to internationalization, which is one of the Festival’s most important strategic lines for future years.

Sitges 2015 runs October 9-18. For more info visit the official Sitges website.

Silent Hills May Be Given a Second Chance on Xbox One

$

We all shed at least a single silent tear at the cancellation of Silent Hills, but it seems like there might be new life for the Del Toro/Kojima superstar mashup. The people over at The Know have reported that an anonymous source inside of Microsoft has stated that they are in talks with Konami to buy the title as an XBox One exclusive.

The deal is reported to be in the ballpark of billions, which sounds absurd for horror title that lacks the mass appeal of something like Grand Theft Auto 5, which reportedly broke a billion dollars in sales in the first week. If bought, we can expect a release date somewhere around March 2016, but with a projection that far off expect something around Q1-Q2.

This sounds like the far-fetched dream of a Microsoft fanboy pissed that it was originally a Sony exclusive, but a few factors give credence to the veracity of these claims. First off, though anonymous, The Know states that this is the same source that gave them the rumor that the Xbox One was coming out with a cheaper Kinect-less version, along with the quarter it would come out. They confirm that while they cannot state who it is specifically, it is an industry insider at Microsoft. Remember, this was big news, as Microsoft had insisted over and over again before launch that a Kinect-less version was in actually impossible since the Xbox One had been designed with integrated Kinect functionality. Lo and behold, June 9th 2014, a Kinect-less Xbox One was introduced.

This gives the rumor of the projected date some weight as well, as the game is reported to already be 80% complete. How much this figure really means is unclear, since we still haven’t seen any gameplay trailers yet. However, with how secretive they were about the original production and their method of announcing through P.T. as a kind of ARG, it isn’t that surprising that the game would be so long into development without any new trailers. It might take some time to convert the PS4 exclusive assets into a stable Xbox One package, but given the hype behind the title I’m sure Microsoft would put everything they have behind the project.

The final thing that gives this report credence is the rush to E3. Now, this is the time when rumors are flying so take all of this with a grain of salt. We all know that Microsoft is really hurting for exclusive titles to give Xbox One the edge over the PS4. As a fan of gaming in general, I’m a bit disappointed in both sides, but Microsoft has particularly been hit hard by poorly received exclusives and a rocky launch. With E3 only a few weeks away, the mad dash to kill the competition is here so a few billion dollars to stick it to them and give you the edge in the eyes of the fans might be worth it for Microsoft at this point.

In any case, we will know something mid-June, when I will personally make the journey to E3 to bring you all the breaking news. I sure hope this happens, but rumors like this spring up every year around this time. I got my hopes up for a great Silent Hill title when P.T. rolled around but promised to guard my heart more wisely when it was first cancelled. It is an exciting little shimmer of hope, but I just hope to not have my heart broken again.

We first heard about Rupture, a new horror/sci-fi project starring Noomi Rapace, in mid-April, and now we’ve learned who her co-star is going to be.  Per Deadline, the always awesome Michael Chiklis (“The Shield,” “American Horror Story: Freak Show”) has joined the cast of Rupture, directed by Steven Shainberg (Secretary) and produced by Andrew Lazar (American Sniper).

The film centers on a single mother (Rapace) struggling to raise her 12-year-old son who is abducted by a mysterious organization. Tied up in their lab, they question her about her medical history, eventually revealing that she has a genetic abnormality:  Her worst fear can cause her to “rupture” — releasing her own alien nature. It is based on a story by Shainberg and Brian Nelson (Hard Candy, 30 Days of Night), who wrote the screenplay.

Chiklis will play “The Bald Man,” the entities’ powerful point man who directs the mother’s violent capture. Principal photography begins next month.

Tango Pictures, a partnership among Christina Weiss Lurie, Shainberg, and Lazar, is teaming with Andrea Iervolino and Monika Bacardi’s AMBI Group on the project.

Predator: Dark Ages Fan Film Is Now Available Online

As a diehard fan of the Predator franchise, I’m always jonesing for something new. I actually own AVP: Alien vs. Predator, Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, and Predators on DVD, for crying out loud. You can probably imagine the pure, unadulterated fanboy squeals that hideously emerged from my throat when the character was added to the Mortal Kombat X DLC roster. I think those unholy sounds are still reverberating somewhere over the Midwest to this very day.

Not surprisingly, I’ve waited patiently for director James Bushe’s kickass fan film Predator: Dark Ages to arrive in some form or fashion. The flick, which stars Adrian Bouchet, Amed Hashimi, Sabine Crossen, Ben Loyd-Holmes, Jon Campling, Joe Egan, and Philip Lane, recently popped up on YouTube. And while some will likely disagree, it was well worth the wait.

Here’s all you need to know going in: A band of Templar Knights venture into a forest to track down a supposed demon that is leaving a trail of carnage across the English countryside. The ensuing confrontation is better than anything produced after Predator 2.

But don’t take my word for it — watch Predator: Dark Ages below. Trust me when I say it’s fantastic. For more info on the fan film, swing by the official Predator: Dark Ages Facebook page.

Wrong Turn 7 Launches Facebook Page, Promises 2017 Release

Is anyone still watching the Wrong Turn series? Apparently there are still some fans out there because the seventh installment in the long-running franchise is coming together. In fact, as of this writing, nearly 600 people have liked the official Facebook page. And, yes, one of them is me.

Details about Wrong Turn 7 are few and far between, which isn’t altogether shocking since the sequel is still over a year away. That said, there’s a very strong possibility the film will follow the misadventures of several teenagers (or twenty-somethings) as they trek through the wilderness. At some point during their journey, a clan of mutant hillbilly psychopaths will turn them into mincemeat. Of course, I could be way off point with that assessment, but I seriously doubt it.

While you’re waiting for Wrong Turn 7 to crawl out of the woods with a bloody, gore-soaked hatchet locked in its crooked teeth, why not check out our review of Wrong Turn 6? Be sure to read it several times because we still have a while before 2017 rolls around.

Movie Adaptation of Horror Game Absention to Be Released

Developer Dream Wave Games, partnered with Deadhouse Films, has announced its plans to adapt the horror adventure game Absention into a feature-length horror movie.

“I am thrilled to be working on this adaptation with Dream Wave Games and Mike Jones,” said Deadhouse founder Enzo Tedeschi. “The game’s launch trailer instantly conjured up several of my favorite horror films when I saw it. On meeting with the game’s creator, Robert Bruce, it was immediately clear that that was exactly his intention and that we are both influenced by the same kind of messed up horror films.”

“It was instantly clear to me while first working with Enzo Tedeschi of Deadhouse Films and writer Mike Jones that we had begun something very unique. Fans of horror film and gamers of classic survival horror will each share in Absention’s haunting vision but with very distinctive perspectives. While they will each operate on their own, together they will combine for something enjoyably horrific,” added Absention’s creator Bruce.

Dream Wave Games also released a cinematic quality announcement trailer to coincide with the announcement of the production plans. More info on the game can be found here.

betsypalmerA true horror icon has passed on so prepare for some sad news… word has come that Betsy Palmer, aka Pamela Voorhees from the original Friday the 13th (1980), has died from natural causes at the age of 88.

Per HuffPost, she passed away on Friday at a hospice care center in Connecticut, according to her longtime manager, Brad Lemack.

Ms. Palmer revisited the genre a few other times as well in 2005’s Penny Dreadful (no relation to the TV show) and then in 2007’s Bell Witch: The Movie.

Her mainstream success came from numerous TV appearances like “Kraft Theatre,” ”Playhouse 90,”  and “Studio One” in television’s early years and “Knot’s Landing,” ”The Love Boat,” and “Newhart” in its heyday; her movie credits include Mr. Roberts with Henry Fonda, The Long Gray Line with Tyrone Power and Maureen O’Hara, and Queen Bee with Joan Crawford.

Palmer is survived by her daughter, Melissa Merendino.  We here at Dread Central send our condolences to Betsy’s friends and families.  It was an honor to have met her… thanks for the memories!

Stephen Romano’s RETRO 13 – Wavelength

So, what happens when the lead singer of The Runaways develops psychic powers, teams up with Louis from Revenge of the Nerds and investigates Area 51, which turns out to be smack-dab in the middle of Hollywood?

Well obviously, they end up running for their lives with a pack of renegade American Indians and three bald humanoid aliens who look like naked children and carry a plague of living death. And guess what? I didn’t make any of that up, kids. It’s this week’s Retro 13 poster, based on the classic film Wavelength, which you can see by scrolling down to the end of this article.

Wavelength is a special film.

Released in 1983 by New World Pictures, it had been independently produced on a low budget over a period of several years, directed and written by Mike Gray, who’d made a splash previously as a screenwriter on The China Syndrome with Jane Fonda and Michael Douglas. The film, involving government conspiracies and extraterrestrial visitors with a psychic connection to the human protagonist of the story, was scuttled briefly when E.T. was released in 1982—but those elements that made Wavelength “similar” to Spielberg’s film eventually became the “selling points” of the project, as it refused to die and finally broke the mainstream surface.

WavelengthThe film contains newbie work from Robert Carradine, veteran work from Keenan Wynn (also of Laserblast from two weeks ago), a fine, fine score by 1980s synth impresarios Tangerine Dream, and the first and only leading performance from Cherie Currie, in a complex role that requires a great deal of depth, as she becomes tethered to a force she cannot understand at first, drawn into the center of an alien collective intelligence which is crying out for rescue. Ultimately, the film becomes a little bit more than a suspense thriller or even a science fiction film—it becomes a story about us, and how we might be perceived by a civilization so advanced that they no longer use their mouths to communicate. (“They just use their mouths for sex,” Currie reveals to Carradine, prompting him to flash the aliens a rather Louis-like shiteating grin.) The film’s original theatrical release poster, pictured at right, made it out to be a horror picture, but that’s not exactly the truth. This week, I right that mistake somewhat by presenting a more representative key art image for this remarkable “lost” genre classic.

Did I say “lost?” Yes I did. Wavelength has not been available on any sort of official home entertainment format for almost 30 years. It was released to cable and VHS home video—but is now a casualty of the digital age. I’m not sure why this was, considering the pedigree of the actors and filmmakers involved—but it sure is a shame.

So get on the Wavelength, kids. Buy one of those vintage VHS copies. Watch the crap-vision tape rip at YouTube. Spread the word and write your favorite fringe-video labels. (Shout! Factory, take notice!) Now that Mike Gray is no longer with us, his legacy is more important than ever to preserve.

This week’s Retro 13 is dedicated to Mike, for this very special film.
