Final Girl (2015)

Final GirlStarring Abigail Breslin, Wes Bentley, Alexander Ludwig

Directed by Tyler Shields

The sweet, cherubic face of Abigail Breslin turns into a hardened killer in Tyler Shield’s vigilante-styled thriller Final Girl, and for all intents and purposes on the surface it appears to be a winner, but upon a deeper inspection we get to see a flawed presentation that lacks the hardware to truly entertain.

Cinematography and presence grab honors here, but the lack of some serious questions answered proves to be too much as the film rolls along. Wes Bentley plays an untitled character who becomes responsible for teaching young Veronica (Breslin) how to become a tempered-steel kind of paladin – she is informed at an early age that her parents have passed away, and her emotion towards such crippling information is as barren as the largest desert. For the next 13 years, she will become trained in virtually every facet of combat and mental conditioning in order to be transformed into a heartless enforcer. Her ultimate revenge goal is to cease the activities of a group of wealthy, entitled Momma’s boys who like to lure young women into their clutches and dispatch them in a methodical fashion.

The film progresses like a La Femme Nikita-styled thriller, but the main issue here unfortunately is Breslin’s performance – I’m not talking about her ability to charm and offer up the innocent schoolgirl appearance, but rather the plausibility of her character being able to flip the switch and turn into a programmable automaton of sorts, unflinching when faced with extreme danger – isn’t that what she was being trained for over the past 13 years? Bentley’s motives come off as somewhat unclear other than he’s the man who is going to provide her the tools to reach the end-game of these sadistic rich boys’ sick, murderous pastime. In addition, Bentley’s character doesn’t receive as much screen time as he should, which is disappointing due to the fact that despite his enigmatic persona, he isn’t given a whole lot of time to shine in its display.

However, the main piece of the anchor which weighs Final Girl to the depths of the ocean floor is the myriad of unanswered questions that any viewer could come up with: Where did Veronica come from? Who really is the unnamed man, and why has he chosen her? What’s the true motive behind these brutal killers, and whose decision was it to permit these killings to go on for months and allow so many innocent young women to suffer a cruel fate? All of these pending inquiries mounted over the course of the movie’s runtime and literally blocked any sense of enjoyment or believability I could have had mustered in the viewing.

I’m sure that Mr. Shields will go on to make some fairly memorable pictures in his career, and he’s at the onset right now, but if there’s one thing to learn here, it’s that you can’t survive on just a pretty face alone.

Meet Grin – Killer Clown and Star of His Own Movie

You need to contribute to the killer clown flick Grin on Indiegogo. You see, the clowns have kidnapped director J.P. Hoffman and will kill him if the fundraising goal is not met. His life is in your hands.

He reached out to Dread Central, saying that the head clown, Grin, whom the film is named after, had agreed to grant us an interview. Hopefully this will make more people aware of the Indiegogo campaign so that J.P.’s life can be spared.

See the horrific ransom video below:

GRIN dscreenshot (1)

Dread Central: So I understand that the director was kidnapped and forced to make the film?

Grin: Yes, We have chosen Philadelphia filmmaker J.P. Hoffman as our director; he is being held for a $100,000 ransom, which we need to make our film. His life rests in your wallet.

DC: How did GRIN come about?

Grin: Our dream is to have a legendary horror film made. We sought out director J.P. Hoffman, who didn’t want to take on the project due to the graphic intensity and his fear of clowns, but we weren’t taking no for an answer. Someone suggested kidnapping a director so we did, and the rest, hopefully, will be history

DC: As the film is about a circus, will there be a lot of killer freaks on display?

Grin: The film is mainly about Grin, Kisses, and Karnage and our revenge for our father’s death; there will be a few other freaks, but we’ll leave the killings to us.

GRIN clown 1 (1)

DC: As this is about a freak show, was Tod Browning’s Freaks an inspiration?

Grin: Honestly, no, the film doesn’t really revolve around the freak show; it’s a revenge film with clowns. We want to take elements from different styles of horror and combine that with the fear and creepiness of clowns. It seems like it would be a recipe for a successful horror film. Imagine Texas Chain Saw Massacre in a clown mask.

DC: So the plot is about the circus performers taking revenge on a corrupt mayor?

Grin: Yes, newly elected Mayor Frank Ford has been trying to run us “freaks” out of town for quite some time, but now being a man of power, he thinks this may be the leverage he needed to finally get us out. When owner and father figure Grady Nelson declines the Mayor’s offer to leave, Mayor Ford has his bodyguards kill Grady. I know the Mayor is responsible for our father’s death so I gather Kisses and Karnage and shows up at the Mayor’s home ready to take revenge on him and anyone who stands in our way.

GRIN clown 4 (1)

DC: Will Bill Moseley be playing a psycho killer like he does so well?

Grin: Actually, we would love to cast Bill as the Mayor, not the psycho killer role we love to see out of him, but definitely a role he could make his own. It is not official, but the other clowns and I have reached out to him about a role in the film. That’s where our budget will come in handy. He’s a little harder to kidnap than J.P.!

DC: Can you talk about the rest of the cast?

Grin: Besides Grin, Kisses, and Karnage the film has yet to be cast. We obviously put together our dream cast, but that would depend on our budget. There are plenty of roles to fill, and we want to make sure we cast the very best, so auditions are going to be a big part of the casting. We also have a very talented behind-the-scenes team who have come on board to help save J.P., including Drew Pizzo, the director of photography who will create the horrific atmosphere we are looking for, as well as Tom Smith and Matthew Scroger from Sick and Twisted FX, who will be handling all the “sick and twisted” killings we have in store.

DC: Like any good horror movie, this will be nasty, but is comedy also a big part? It does feature clowns after all?

Grin: Yes, there are some comedic moments written in the film, mostly through characters and dialogue, but we’re not here to entertain a birthday party… get ready for some straight-up hardcore revenge.

GRIN clown 3 (1)

DC: What stage of development are you in?

Grin: We are still in the early stages, the script is undergoing a second draft, our campaign is set for 60 days, and by that time we should have our final draft and looking to cast. In the meantime we are scouting locations and going over our kill scenes with our FX team over at Sick  and Twisted FX.

DC: After the film is made, will the director be released or forced to make a sequel?

GRIN: We hope that J.P. will be more cooperative and we can become friends; we’d much rather him shoot a sequel under better circumstances. Kidnapping isn’t just hard on the victim, it’s a lot of work for us too!

The After Dark “8 Films to Die For” Horrorfest returns this Halloween season, and joining previously announced titles Re-Kill, Murder in the Dark, The Wicked Within, and Lumberjack Man is Suspension, described as a love letter to horror cinema. Full details await!

From the Press Release:
The 5th spot in Courtney Solomon’s “8 Films to Die For” by After Dark Films has been taken. Suspension, directed by Jeffery Scott Lando (Decoys 2: Alien Seduction), will be the next film in the famed horror festival, in theaters throughout the U.S. October 16, 2015.

This visually stunning film is a follow-up to Jeffrey Lando and Kevin Mosley’s Savage Island.

“Lock your doors,” says Franchesca Lantz, Director of Creative Affairs & Acquisitions at After Dark Films. “The creepy creativity and wicked imagination oozing from this film will get you.”

Suspension was written by Kevin Mosley (Puppet Killer) and produced by Jeffery Scott Lando. Sage Brocklebank (Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore) produced and starred in the film.

“We worked harder to engineer Suspension than anything I’ve ever worked on before,” says director/producer Jeffery Lando. “It’s a real love letter to horror films, the real horror films, the ones that keep us suspended between terror and ecstasy throughout and reveal aspects of ourselves that we’d rather ignore. I’m thrilled to be getting to share our movie with real genre fans.”

Also starring is Ellen MacNevin (“Supernatural”), Steve Richmond (“iZombie”), Rustin Gresiuk (Flicka: Country Pride), Taylor Russell (“Falling Skies”), and two-time Ampia Best Actor award winner Duncan Ollerenshaw (“Hell on Wheels”).

“I couldn’t be happier with Suspension being part of the After Dark ‘8 Films to Die For’ Festival. It’s truly an honor,” says screenwriter Kevin Mosley.  “Jeffery and myself had been wanting to make Suspension for years, a project that began as a traditional slasher film but evolved into something much more complex. I can’t wait for the horror fans to see it, and I am thrilled that After Dark will be bringing it to them.”

“8 Films to Die For” will be released in theaters on October 16, 2015, with Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment handling all ancillary forms of media, including Digital HD, DVD, and VOD.

TIFF 2015: Roddy Piper Battles Cthulhu in Portal to Hell; Watch the Trailer Right Now

We’re still incredibly sad about the loss of “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, who was a one-of-a-kind talent and one hell of a man. With the short film Portal to Hell, he leaves behind one last little treat for us all, and ahead of the premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, the trailer has arrived. Enjoy!

Director Vivieno Caldinelli joined forces with writer Matt Watts and executive producers Todd Brown and Andrew Rosen for Portal to Hell. Piper stars as Jack, a man who discovers a — you guessed it — portal to hell in the basement of the building he manages.

Synopsis:
Jack is a simple man with simple needs. Mostly he just needs to be left alone to read his book. It’s a good book and he likes it, or at least he would if the tenants of the building he manages weren’t so damn needy themselves. And it’s not just blown fuses and clogged toilets here… no, when the building power goes out, the culprit is a pair of tenants opening a portal to hell in the basement. Does this count as building maintenance? Is battling the supernatural part of Jack’s job description? Maybe not, but if Jack can’t close the portal, the entire building and the whole world are screwed.

The 40th annual Toronto International Film Festival kicks off on September 10th, and we’ve just learned that Ben Wheatley’s High-Rise will world premiere at the event. An adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s novel, the film is one we’re hotly anticipating, and today we’ve got some new images to show off. What are you waiting for?!

Tom Hiddleston, Luke Evans (Dracula Untold), Elisabeth Moss (“Mad Men”), Stacy Martin, Peter Ferdinando, Jeremy Irons, and Sienna Miller comprise the impressive cast.

Scripted by Amy Jump, the film centers on a new residential tower built on the eve of Margaret Thatcher’s rise to power at the site of what will soon become the world’s financial hub. Designed as a luxurious solution to the problems of the city, it is a world apart.

Enter Robert Laing (Hiddleston), a young doctor seduced by the high-rise and its creator, the visionary architect Anthony Royal (Irons). Laing discovers a world of complex loyalties and also strikes up a relationship with Royal’s devoted aide, Charlotte (Miller).

But rot has set in beneath the flawless surface. Sensing discord amongst the tenants, Laing meets Wilder, a charismatic provocateur bent on inciting the situation. Wilder initiates Laing into the hidden life of the high-rise, and Laing is shocked at what he sees. As the residents break into tribal factions, Laing finds himself in the middle of mounting violence… violence that he also finds emerging in himself.

Wesley Snipes Talks Return of Blade; May Play Similar Character in Future Project?

It’s been over 10 years since Wesley Snipes last played badass vampire slayer Blade, and the actor has over the years built up a reputation for hinting at a franchise return that has of course never happened. He’s up to his old tricks again, so read on to find out what he’s saying now.

In an interview with Spinoff Online, Snipes briefly spoke about the return of Blade, indicating that the chances of him playing the character one more time are pretty good. But even if things don’t work out as he hopes they will, Snipes hints that he has a little something else up his sleeve.

Well, we’ve had some discussions. We have had very positive and favorable discussions about the Blade character and other things they have in mind,” he told the outlet. “We’ll see where it goes. For those Blade fans, if we never reprise Blade, I have another character that will stand toe to toe with Blade any day. It’s not done yet.”

Bring it, Snipes. Bring all of it.

Alleluia! The Devil’s Carnival (2015)

Alleluia! The Devil's CarnivalStarring Terrance Zdunich, Paul Sorvino, Emilie Autumn, Adam Pascal

Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman

The musical seems to be dead, what with all the superhero and action films dominating big box office these days. But that’s OK… God (Paul Sorvino) and Satan (Terrance Zdunich) are dead too, and that doesn’t stop them from busting out into song. In Alleluia! The Devil’s Carnival, crafty Lucifer sets an insidious plot in motion against Heaven’s disciples and all hell breaks loose.

Following collaborations on 2008’s Repo! The Genetic Opera and 2012’s The Devil’s Carnival: Episode One (review), cult filmmakers Darren Lynn Bousman and Terrance Zdunich are back with the another installment of their dark fantasy / musical film franchise. Bousman directed the film, while Zdunich stars, and wrote the screenplay and music and lyrics (with the help of co-composer Saar Hendleman).

Using silent film style title place cards and zippy flashbacks, the movie opens with a little refresher course on the first slew of Satanic shenanigans. We get a quick overview of the Devil’s domain, which is depicted as a creepy carnival populated by sinister souls (lost, and otherwise). While The Devil’s Carnival: Episode One gave us a glimpse into each of the hell-dweller’s roles and past sins, Alleluia! focuses firmly on four central characters: the aforementioned head honchos, and Painted Doll (Emilie Autumn) and The Agent (Adam Pascal).

Which is not to say this isn’t an ensemble – the cast is huge, and to recount each and every person’s role would do you a disservice… the movie needs to be seen and heard (but I will say, I loved Ted Neely in his role – it’s Jesus Chris Superstar himself, and he’s still got those heavenly pipes! Two other standouts, big-time, are Jimmy Urine and Chantal Claret channeling sadistic, screwball comedians of yore).

While the songs becoming progressively less rock’n-roll with each subsequent Bousman musical, one certainly can’t fault the chops of Zdunich (who is also the best singer in the cast) and Hendleman for firing on all cylinders when it comes to channeling fractured and twisted ditties from heavenly and hellish spheres – the soundtrack and score are as strange and singular as can be. I guarantee you will not hear new tunes like these anywhere else. Also, when it comes to the look and feel of the film (makeup by Vincent Guastini, costumes by Mildred Von Hildegard, and cinematography by Joseph White) you are in for a unique treat – it’s like Depression-Era cartoon burlesque meets Dame Vivienne Westwood on acid.

If you’re in the mood for a true spectacle that’s as dark as it delightful, you must see Alleluia! The Devil’s Carnival in all its gory glory.

Film4 FrightFest 2015: Exclusive Goddess of Love Image Takes It All Off

Playing as part of this year’s Film4 FrightFest is the new film from Jon Knautz, Love Goddess, and right now we have an exclusive image that’s high on the wolf call scale!

From the Press Release:
Ever want to experience the mind of the insane? Director Jon Knautz’s (Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer, The Shrine) brings audiences an experience like no other. The Shrine director returns to the genre with a new approach in the independent psycho sexual thriller Goddess of Love. The film will make its world premiere at the upcoming London FrightFest 2015 on Monday, August 31st, and has also been accepted to the 48th Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, October 9-18. The film will be competing at Sitges in the “Panorama Section” for Best Feature Film.

Goddess of Love

Represented by Automatic Entertainment, the film stars Alexis Kendra (Girl House), Woody Naismith (Swelter), and Elizabeth Sandy (Starting from Scratch) and is co-written by Knautz and Kendra. Goddess of Love centers on an emotionally unstable stripper named Venus (Kendra), whose life is derailed in the wake of being dumped by her boyfriend. Brian (Naismith) was the love of Venus’ life, and the thought of him having an affair with another woman begins her volatile descent into the dark side of psychosexual insanity. Sexy and shocking in the super-stylish tradition of Brian De Palma and Roman Polanski, this erotic thriller is sure to entice audiences.

“I was very inspired by films like Taxi Driver and Repulsion, and I became fascinated with the idea of having the audience experience a film through the eyes of an individual who is completely detaching from reality,” states Knautz. “At first, you sympathize and connect with the protagonist, but as the story unravels, the viewers start to pull away as they begin to realize that the protagonist may actually be the antagonist.”

“We’re thrilled that Goddess of Love has been accepted to this year’s FrightFest and Sitges. We believe audiences will respond to the provocative nature of the film,” states Jeffrey Giles of Automatic Entertainment.

Automatic Entertainment will continue to promote both domestic and international rights at upcoming markets.

Interview: Anthony Altamura – Writer/Director of The Passage

Some of us will be unfortunate enough to encounter genuine evil in our lifetime. Those of use who are fortunate enough never to come across it are still terrified of it. This is something that writer and director Anthony Altamura explores in his new short horror film The Passage (Indiegogo here).

He offers more insight into the film in the following interview:

Dread Central: Have you had the idea for The Passage for a long time?

Anthony Altamura: The passage is a story I came up with about two years ago now. The concept came to me in a dream I had where I was being followed by two masked/cloak-wearing individuals whom I instantly could feel a demonic presence residing in. I then started thinking how I have yet to see a film where you truly meet the devil face-to-face without it being over-the-top to the point where it’s no longer frightening.

The Passage crew 2 (1)

DC: On the Indiegogo page you mention how we are all afraid of “staring evil in its face.” Can you elaborate?

AA: It depends on the person and what they believe in, but the way I look at it is this… A lot of people fear that they will die and go to hell. A lot of people don’t. But no matter how strongly you feel against hell being a place you may end up, in the back of your mind you have to be at least a little afraid that you may be wrong. So we decided that sitting face-to-face with the Devil himself is a solid choice for a horror synopsis.

DC: So the plot follows a man called Michael who encounters the Devil?

AA: Michael is a young man who is in a realm which he can’t quite pinpoint. Is he alive? Is he dead? Is he dreaming? You’ll have to see to find out. Don’t want to give away too much.

DC: Also on Indiegogo we see images which offer glimpses of a horrific creature. Will we be seeing a lot more of said creature in the film?

AA: You will be seeing glimpses of our movie monster throughout the film, until the climactic scene where he is fully revealed. And we think it is going to scare the hell out of you.

The Passage crew (1)

DC: Are you relying on genuine suspense over gore and shock tactics?

AA: More of a genuine suspense approach for sure. There will be moments where certain things come out of nowhere and startle you, but that’s not the type of thing we rely on to “scare” people. We want to make people think. And we want people to question why every shot is making you feel a certain unsettling vibe. I am a huge Stanley Kubrick fan, and I think I’ll be using his innovative one-point perspective technique to my advantage. I find it brilliant that within symmetry you look for flaw. Which subliminally makes you feel that something has to be wrong.

DC: What kind of runtime are you expecting?

AA: We are expecting a runtime of 15 minutes, mainly because it’s the perfect amount for our eight months of festival entries.

The Passage monster (1)

DC: Do you find telling a story in the medium of a short film liberating or constraining?

AA: With this story specifically I find it a bit more freeing than anything. I think one of the main issues I have with a lot of the new horror films is that they show too much. They let you accept the monster to the point where you can’t let yourself be afraid of it any longer. When you’re 45 minutes into the film and you’ve seen the creature 15 times, I’d imagine the last few scenes of the film you’d feel like you can kick its ass yourself. With a short film you don’t even have enough time to do so. We are already planning a few more short horror films to release in the future.

DC: What stage of production are you currently in?

AA: The film is still in pre-production, but the gears are constantly turning. We film the first week of November.

DC: Do you have a great crew?

AA: My crew is unbelievably passionate and completely on the same page. It’s amazing to see so many people fall in love with a script you wrote and want to see it on the screen as badly as you do.

Today on VOD: Air, Amnesiac, Cop Car, and Final Girl

Though there are no new horror movies receiving widespread theatrical releases this week, the good news is that today’s VOD offerings are numerous. So if you’re looking to cuddle up on the couch this weekend and you want a good genre flick to pass the time with, look no further!

First up, “The Walking Dead’s” Norman Reedus stars alongside Djimon Hounsou in the thriller AIR, produced by “The Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman. The film, directed by Christian Cantamessa, locks the two actors together in a confined space and promises to be worth your money.

AIR tells the story of two custodial workers tasked with maintaining an underground facility housing the last remnants of society (who are all in a cryogenic sleep) after the atmosphere has been rendered unbreathable as a result of nuclear fallout. Reedus and Hounsou’s characters wake for their scheduled routine check-up and … well, things do not go routinely.

air-poster-600x887

Also out today, courtesy of XLrator Media, is Michael Polish’s Amnesiac (review), a psychological thriller that our own Matt Boiselle called “a worthwhile watch that will turn some heads with its frightening possibilities.”

Kate Bosworth and Wes Bentley star in the film about a man who wakes up in bed suffering from memory loss after being in an accident, only to begin to suspect that his wife may not be his real wife and that a web of lies and deceit deepen inside the house where he soon finds himself a prisoner.

Amnesiac

Though not quite a horror film, Cop Car is one movie that most definitely deserves a VOD rental this weekend. A taut thriller by way of an Amblin adventure film, this one was directed by Jon Watts (Clown) and stars Kevin Bacon as a crooked sheriff.

When a pair of 10-year-olds find an abandoned cop car in a field and take it for a joyride, it seems like they could kill themselves at any moment. But things only get worse when the small-town sheriff goes looking for his missing car—and the illicit cargo he left in the trunk—and the kids find themselves at the center of a deadly game of cat and mouse they don’t understand.

Cop Car

And finally, Abigail Breslin and Wes Bentley star in Final Girl (review), the feature debut of photographer Tyler Shields. It’s a beautiful looking film, if nothing else, as well as one that boasts a very interesting concept.

Loner Veronica is new to school, shy and vulnerable, the perfect target for a group of teenage boys who lure girls into the woods to hunt and kill them for sport. It’s only after they get her alone that she turns the tables on them, escaping and revealing she’s armed and knows how to defend herself.

Little do they know, Veronica is an assassin-in-training, and she’s chosen killing these boys as her final test. When the dust clears, Veronica will find out if she can be the final girl these boys ever have a chance to hurt.

Shane Black’s Predator Sequel Promises to Reinvent the Franchise

One of the coolest things happening in Hollywood right now is that Shane Black (Iron Man 3) and Fred Dekker (The Monster Squad) are working on a Predator movie, the two scripting the film together and Black set to direct. Best of all, it’s a sequel rather than a remake, and today brings some more information. So read on for the latest!

Per Collider, original Predator producer John Davis spilled some beans about the project, which has mostly been shrouded in secrecy since the exciting announcement was made. And he promises that fans of the franchise are in store for a real treat with this one.

Shane shot a movie and he’s doing a pilot now, but I’ve read a lot of his script and I think it’s genius,” said Davis. “I think it’s genius and I think it’s entertaining, and what it did is recreate a famous franchise in a different, interesting way, looking at it from a different light. He’s just an amazing writer-director. He’s got a way of looking at this that makes you excited again.

Shane’s got a writing partner, Fred Dekker. They’ve been doing it together and Fred’s great,” Davis continued. “The two of them together, they’ve been in the business for a long time, but the writing is so fresh, the perspective is so fresh. I’m telling you you’re going to get something you don’t expect and you’re going to say, ‘This is the most entertaining way to reinvent a franchise.’ I mean, he’s the guy who wrote Iron Man 3.”

Mike Flanagan made an impressive debut on the scene with 2011’s Absentia, and he was scooped up by Hollywood for last year’s Oculus. Up next, Flanagan will re-team with Blumhouse Productions for a sequel to Ouija, and we’ve conjured up all the spooky details for you today.

Per THR, Mike Flanagan will both co-write and direct Ouija 2, a sequel that was inevitable whether anyone wanted it or not. Despite the lackluster reviews, Ouija had a strong performance at the box office last year, and that’s what is most important. Jeff Howard will co-write the script.

In front of the camera, Annalise Basso (below) has nabbed one of the female lead roles. Basso, who appeared in Oculus, will star as a young girl grieving the death of her father.

Universal, Blumhouse, Platinum Dunes, and Hasbro’s Ouija 2, set for release on October 21, 2016, will again revolve around the ancient spirit board that was at the center of the first film.

Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, and Andrew Form are producing for Platinum Dunes while Jason Blum will produce for Blumhouse Productions and Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis from Hasbro. Intrepid Pictures’ Trevor Macy, Flanagan’s frequent collaborator, will also join the film in a producer capacity. Universal’s director of development Sara Scott will oversee for the studio.
