Trailer Teases Upcoming Dante’s Inferno Fan Film

Released in 2010, the action-adventure video game Dante’s Inferno was based on the first canticle of Dante Alighieri’s epic poem Divine Comedy, and in it you were tasked with taking Dante through the nine circles of Hell. Sounds like the makings for a pretty awesome film, doesn’t it?

Universal Studios is indeed developing a live-action film inspired by the game, and last we heard, Evil Dead remake director Fede Alvarez was attached to direct. That sounds like music to our ears, though we haven’t heard a peep about the project in some time. And fans are getting antsy.

One of those fans, Tal Peleg, has taken matters into his own hands, and in the third quarter of next year he’s planning to unleash fan film Dante’s Redemption: Act I. We’ve still got a good deal of waiting to do, but before 2015 comes to a close, Peleg wanted to give us all our first sneak peek.

Check out the Dante’s Redemption: Act I teaser below!

One of the only disappointments in the very good adaptation of R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps (review) was the blink-and-you-missed-it cameo of the much beloved Carly Beth and her “Haunted Mask.”

Today makeup artist Jamie Kelman gave fans a good look at his design for the beloved character via his Facebook page. Check it out!

Haunted Mask

“I did two Haunted Masks for the GOOSEBUMPS movie that went largely unseen. This one is the actual mask prop.”

Haunted Mask

“This one is the victim makeup, after putting on the mask that comes to life on her face. This makeup was applied by Bart J. Mixon and Christopher Nelson.”

On tap right now we have the first image from Screen Gems’ latest horror tale, Patient Zero, via EW; and it features both Matt Smith (“Doctor Who,” Terminator Genisys) and Academy Award nominee Stanley Tucci (The Hunger Games). Dig it.

Stefan Ruzowitzky directs. This pandemic thriller also stars Natalie Dormer (“Game of Thrones”), John Bradley (“Game of Thrones”), and Agyness Deyn (Clash of the Titans) and sees humanity battling intelligent, adrenaline-fueled creatures born from a viral superstrain.

The great days of zombies are a little bit over. It’s time for something new,” says Ruzowitzky, adding that “the infected,” as they’re called, are “much sexier” than the undead. “They have a lot of energy, they’re fast, they’re good-looking. Not those walking vegetables.

Look for Patient Zero on September 2, 2016.

Synopsis:

Everlasting (2016)

Everlasting-PosterStarring Valentina de Angelis, Adam David, Elisabeth Röhm

Directed by Anthony Stabley

Recently nominated for Best Feature at the Crystal Palace International Film Festival in London, Anthony Stabley’s independent feature debut, Everlasting, is looking to make waves as it rides into the festival circuit in 2016. Though not a traditional horror film, Everlasting has reasonably generated buzz within the horror community thanks to its murder-mystery casing and a bevy of notable appearances from genre favorites, including Pat Healy (Cheap Thrills), Michael Massee (At the Devil’s Door), and Bai Ling (The Crow).

Beyond these enticing selling points, however, audiences will be surprised to find that Stabley’s film ultimately offers quite a bit more substance than first meets the eye as well — providing resonant drama and suspense that recalls haunting indie fare such as 2006’s The Dead Girl and Brick.

In Everlasting, a teenage filmmaker named Matt (David) finds his life thrown into an unsettling state when he receives an ominous package containing a DV tape that shows the murder of his girlfriend, Jessie (de Angelis). Still reeling from her untimely passing, Matt decides at this point to memorialize the girl he loved in all of her spirited, but faulted glory; he begins making a film of his own that recounts the weeks leading up to Jessie’s death in an effort to find resolution and peace. His decision is also fueled by a more dangerous motive, however: He plans to use the film to document his trip back to Los Angeles — the site of Jessie’s murder — to confront her killer.

As he makes his way from Colorado to California, recalling his last days with Jessie and the course of events that led her to death, Matt recklessly moves closer to peril as his thirst for the truth grows greater with each passing day. The story is told through a mix of homemade footage, real-time sequences, and news clips, with Matt guiding the film through ever-present narration.

Despite what one might expect from the premise, Everlasting is not quite a revenge film, nor is it truly a crime thriller; the carefully guided “student film” medium through which Matt and Jessie’s story is told does not quite allow it to be fully either in the traditional sense. What we have here is a simply executed — albeit very dark — drama that follows two teenagers whose dreams are tragically snuffed out as they collide with the merciless reality of a big city where good intentions and a sense of youthful invincibility are not enough to survive. The film’s emotional sensibilities are punctuated with moments of suspense and discomfort as it ventures into Jessie’s damaged nature and Matt’s emotionally distraught state as he seeks to find resolve in his own journey after her death.

The film includes memorable supporting turns from Healy and Massee, as well as a heartbreaking performance from Elisabeth Röhm as Jessie’s mother, but Everlasting is primarily driven by its two young leads–namely, the sensitive but passionately resolute Matt. Adam David impresses here as he carries the film, imbuing our narrator with a mix of reckless determination and wide-eyed fragility that is always believable. Valentina de Angelis is beguilingly charismatic as the doomed Jessie, a character who is equal parts pitiable and frustrating; she embodies that girl many of us have known in our formative years who emerges from a dysfunctional upbringing with a life outlook that is all at once bleak and defiant, yet somehow naively assured. She is impassioned, but emotionally fragmented, questioning motives of those that love her more than the motives of strangers who promise fame and fortune. Both stars genuinely connect with a radiant chemistry, establishing an emotional core to the film that effectively amplifies the heartbreaking end of their fateful path.

Everlasting‘s primary focus on the young couple makes for a journey that feels very authentic in its explorations of love and loss, though its “amateur filmmaker” framing does stumble along the way. There are times where Matt’s expository voice-over grows clunky, sometimes delivered with a tonal incongruity that almost immediately lifts the tension established by a previous scene. The differentiation between scene sources gets somewhat blurry as well; while Stabley does a fine job of establishing Matt as the sole perspective, it becomes difficult to tell whether we are watching a real-time memory or documented footage of the two. At times, it is also unclear as to how some of the real-time moments would actually play out in Matt’s film.

To its ultimate credit though, Stabley’s use of home video and third-party clips mostly serves in establishing a chillingly voyeuristic air; some of these are quite horrific and push the film closer to thriller territory, like flashes of crime scenes and blurred surveillance images of the killer. Elsewhere, the film effectively captures uncomfortably private moments shared between Matt and Jessie, echoing bits of Larry Clark or Gregg Araki in the process, albeit to more toned down degrees. The most notable of these is a scene in which the couple has sex on a bedroom floor and Jessie’s penchant for masochism comes to light. At this point, Stabley captures an instance that feels intrusive and even inappropriate, proving that the film is most viscerally compelling when it taps into those moments that you feel like you’ve stumbled upon without warning. The scenes with the greatest emotional impact are elevated by the film’s soundtrack, which is a mix of scored pieces (courtesy of Scott Gordon and David Levita) and youthful alternative fare that mirrors the seemingly dichotomous tones of despair and romance that permeate the story.

While Everlasting progressively feels as if it is ramping up to an explosive final act as Matt comes closer to facing the killer, the film actually takes a curious turn in the last 15 minutes; I will only say that Stabley’s approach is ultimately more subdued than would be expected. This divisive resolution will be make-or-break for many, and I would be lying if I said that I didn’t find myself wanting more in a general sense from the film as far as momentum goes. Further exploration of the seedier side of Los Angeles would have been welcome as well, as I would have liked to witness more of Jessie’s descent firsthand, though it may have ultimately been difficult to portray given Matt’s cemented role as the narrator. While I appreciated the authenticity established between Jessie and Matt, I also would have loved to see more complex aspects of their relationship explored, focusing on other ways in which Jessie’s background has affected their relationship beyond the sexual element.

Everlasting ends up working best when viewed as a melancholy genre hybrid with an unexpected silver lining. It will likely fare best with those who go in without pre-established expectations of the kind of film they think it will or should be, though its trailer — wrought with creepy imagery — may admittedly make this a bit difficult. In actuality, the horror here is incidental, as Matt’s decision to create his own film stems from his desire to immortalize Jessie’s spirit and their love, and not necessarily the gruesome end of her life. This brings reason to the fact that we never see certain scenes of violence played out in full, though this decision will surely irk some genre fans who would prefer to see Everlasting delve much deeper into its snuff film trappings. The film’s deliberate decision to withhold such scenes is made with clear intent: Stabley seeks to make a greater statement about the enduring power of love and its ability to withstand and transcend tragedy above all.

Though sometimes rough around the edges, Everlasting remains an emotionally striking film about death that ultimately chooses to celebrate life. It is a curious decision to see a film so filled with doom and gloom aim to give the audience hope in the end, but the writer-director’s sentiments here are most admirable for this reviewer. Though they may not resonate with some of the more hardened genre fans, they make for a pleasingly subversive experience that is worth the ride.

Alien: Covenant Set Ten Years After Prometheus

Ridley Scott’s upcoming film Alien: Covenant is believed to be the first in a conceived trilogy of films that will link the events of Prometheus with the original Alien, and in case you missed it in our previous story about what the characters’ new spacesuits will look like, here’s some interesting information about the secretive project’s timeline. Read on for the latest.

Per Collider, costume designer Janty Yates has spilled the beans that the Prometheus sequel will take place ten years after the events of Scott’s 2012 film. That would mean that it’s set in the year 2103, thereby taking place just shy of 20 years before the events of the 1979 sci-fi classic.

Katherine Waterston will star alongside Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace.

Specific plot details for the new film are being closely guarded, but it is believed to follow the crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet, who discover what they believe is an uncharted paradise but is, in fact, a dark, dangerous world, the only inhabitant of which is David (Fassbender), the “synthetic” and survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

The film is set for release on October 6th, 2017.

Today the U.S. Postal Service provided a preview of its 2016 stamp program, and while most of the new designs are, as you’d expect, pretty mainstream, there is one group that’s sure to attract the horror crowd.  Read on for a look at the four new jack-o’-lantern stamps coming out in honor of our favorite holiday, Halloween!

The date of issuance and the stamp dedication ceremony location will be announced at a later date.

Other notable additions include a booklet of Forever stamps featuring photographs of 20 popular pets, 16 Forever stamps featuring the planets in our solar system (2 each of Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune; Pluto gets its own sheet), and 50th anniversary “Star Trek” Forever stamps showcasing four digital illustrations inspired by classic elements of the television program. Visit USPS.com for more info.

“Our stamps articulate the American experience through miniature works of art,” said Acting Stamp Services Director Mary-Anne Penner. “Our diverse stamp topics for 2016 are sure to appeal to everyone, and with the New Year just around the corner, now is a perfect time to get started in stamp collecting. It’s an educational hobby the entire family can enjoy.”

Jack-O’-Lanterns
In the spirit of Halloween, the Postal Service issues these delightfully eerie stamps featuring photographs of four different jack-o’-lanterns.  These creatively carved pumpkins have been symbols of Halloween in the United States since the late 19th century, not long after celebrations of the holiday began here. These are the first Halloween-themed stamps issued by the Postal Service.

Paul Montanari designed and carved the pumpkins under the art direction of Derry Noyes of Washington, DC.  Sally Anderson-Bruce photographed the lit jack-o’-lanterns used on the stamps.

Top 10 Cult Horror Blu-ray Releases of 2015 to Add to Your Collection

$
0
0

Between a new job, a new baby, and rigorous deadlines, it was a miracle I watched anything in 2015. Sadly, I skipped many of the genre’s new releases, gravitating instead toward the heaps of old favorites and forgotten gems that were dusted off for HD genre junkies.

No overarching criteria went into evaluating these titles. Obviously, audio/video quality is the biggest factor, and then I considered a whole range of others while compiling this list.

Is the movie good? How are the supplements? Not every film here is a jam-packed special edition, and no prizes have been awarded for the glossiest slipcover. Still, here are ten genre titles (and a runner-up) that were done right on Blu-ray this year.

lovebutcherblu10. The Love Butcher (1975)

Released by Code Red

Code Red doesn’t always make it easy to get their stuff. Ever since leaving the retail game, Code “Blus” have only been available in two places: the Big Cartel shop and Screen Archives Entertainment. This 1975 oddity can only be purchased at the former, and if you’re a fan of low-budget sleaze, this psychological proto-slasher, about a deranged gardener killing upper class women, is a must-have. The extras are light, just a director’s commentary here, but applaud Code Red for bringing this obscurity to Blu-ray. Adventurous horror fans who’ve never seen this are going to dig it, and the HD presentation is quite impressive.

9. A Candle for the Devil (1973)

Released by Scorpion Releasing

Like Code Red, Scorpion Blus aren’t the easiest to come by. While many of their titles are available on Amazon, another subset is available exclusively to Screen Archives. That’s the case for this 1973 chiller. Its title implies satanic panic, but that’s not the case. Instead we focus on two sibling inn proprietors—one of whom is a religious zealot who fancies herself an agent of God, killing the immoral among them. Director Eugenio Martin (Horror Express) has plenty to say about the church’s influence on society writ large and makes great use of the Spanish village where this is set. Scorpion created a new master for this Blu-ray, bringing another lost movie to the forefront of technology.

8. The Brood (1979)

Released by The Criterion Collection

One of the worst covers in recent memory aside, Criterion’s long-awaited release of David Cronenberg’s masterpiece is the must-have edition. Throw out those old MGM discs, because the A/V quality here is perfection. And the movie? Let’s just say it was much easier to take upon initial discovery. As an adult, the themes of marital anger and despair resonate in a way they couldn’t possibly to a high school kid. Add to it my newfound fatherhood this year, and it’s profoundly unsettling in a way that few films are. It’s the work of a master filmmaker, with the payoff that’s pure nightmare fuel. Come for the movie, stay for the fantastic supplements that Criterion has included.

vampyros7. Vampyros Lesbos (1970)

Released by Severin Films

Love him or hate him, European horror/exploitation wouldn’t be the same without the late, great Jess Franco. And while I prefer some of his other offerings (Faceless is one I’m praying someone will bring to BD), there’s no denying the erotic power and influence of Vampyros Lesbos. Understanding its importance, Severin Films has seen fit to provide this title with a wonderfully classy release. Frankly, it’s worth your bucks just to savor Soledad Miranda in HD. That the movie has never looked better is just the icing on the cake. The movie itself is a slow psychedelic seduction—an acquired taste for sure, but an essential one for fans of Euro cinema. And kudos to Severin for securing an interview with the legendary director just before his passing. This is the perfect way to honor Franco’s legacy.

6. Long Weekend (1978)

Released by Synapse Films

I love Australian horror, and this is probably my very favorite offering from Down Under. It’s an environmentally conscious story of a married couple vacationing on a lonely stretch of Australian coastline, victimized by the land they brashly disrespect. It’s also the wrenching story of a failing marriage. Directed with confidence by Colin Eggleston, I’m not sure another movie utilizes silence as effectively. With an unnerving climax pushing it into all-timer territory, Long Weekend needs a spot on your shelf. Synapse previously released this on DVD, but if you know anything about their work, you know their Blu-ray restoration is a thing of beauty.

5. Madman (1982)

Released by Vinegar Syndrome

Madman. In 4k. Let that sink in. Vinegar Syndrome has only been on the scene for a few years, but they’ve proved themselves a force to be reckoned with. We need look no further than this year’s superb Madman release for proof. This is one of the best slasher films of the golden age—a literal campfire legend come to life that now comes in a fantastic package to boot. You won’t believe how good this looks/sounds, and VinSyn has licensed most of the supplements from previous releases, making this one a no-brainer.

society4. Society (1989)

Released by Arrow Films

While Society has a long-held cult of admirers, it’s never had the following it deserves. Much like The Brood, I didn’t have the wherewithal to fully process writer/director Brian Yuzna’s sly take on societal inequality as a kid. Sitting down with Arrow’s disc this summer was like watching it for the first time, and that’s just part of the fun. Arrow’s limited edition set is easily the best packaged release this year. The disgusting box art (representing the film’s climactic “shunting”) stands out in the best possible way, and it comes packed with a nifty sequel comic that’s worth a read. And that’s just the tip of the supplemental iceberg. Within the span of a calendar year, Arrow has arrived in the U.S. and already ascended to the very top of the cult label ladder. Society gets the royal treatment, and it shouldn’t fly under the radar any longer.

3. Army of Darkness (1992)

Released by Scream Factory

I love definitive editions. We’re reaching the point in physical media’s life cycle where it’s time to start saying “no” to double, triple, and decuple dips. Scream Factory seems to have realized this too, choosing to spare no expense for Sam Raimi’s Army of Darkness. With no less than four cuts of the film (the TV version is included as an SD extra on Disc 3) and piles of supplements, no stone is left unturned. Image quality is mostly great, although I really wish these guys would kill compression issues once and for all, as there are fleeting moments of it here. Still, a massive improvement over Universal’s own release a few years back, this is how you treat one of the most popular cult movies of our lifetime.

Extra props to Scream Factory for handling the disc replacement program with the utmost quickness, too.

2. The Beyond (1981)

Released by Grindhouse Releasing

Grindhouse had a killer year. Not only did we finally get Fulci’s masterpiece on Stateside Blu-ray in a killer edition, they also released Duke Mitchell’s duo of mafia exploitation flicks, as well as Umberto Lenzi’s trash classic Cannibal Ferox. Still, you can’t top The Beyond, and Grindhouse knows it. They stuffed this sucker full of extras, new and old, and delivered the best technical presentation I’ve ever seen for The Beyond. It took me a week to make it through all the extras, and the inclusion of the soundtrack CD is a fantastic touch as well. This is one of the most important genre films of the 80s, and this release supports that reputation.

blood rage1. Blood Rage (1983/1987)

Released by Arrow Films

I can’t believe Blood Rage, previously one of the most obscure slashers of the 1980s, is at last available in the best Blu-ray package of the year. Blood Rage went from being MIA to fully definitive in a single Stateside release. In my review I theorized that this was about to win a lot of new fans. Not only does the Blu-ray look amazing, but Arrow includes three different versions for us completionists. The 2k restoration of the 1983 cut is a thing of beauty, while the censored 1987 theatrical cut is included as a curio. There’s also a composite print that Frankensteins the two together. Extras are plentiful, and it’s beyond rewarding to get some perspective on this overlooked gem. Seriously, if you only buy one Blu-ray off this list, it should be Blood Rage. More slashers deserve the Criterion treatment, and I trust Arrow to deliver big in the years to come.

Honorable mention: Howling II: Your Sister Is A Werewolf (1985)

Released by Scream Factory

Okay, look. I’ve long since come to terms with the fact that I’m this movie’s only fanatical fan. The head of every genre label has laughed in my face for requesting this. But that doesn’t matter anymore because Scream Factory has answered my prayers. They’ve given this werewolf classic more fan service than even I would’ve thought possible. That makes them heroes. I’ve never seen the movie look better, but what’s more important is the way it sounds. Blasting the great Steve Parsons soundtrack on my sound system was one of my favorite experiences in 2015, and I do believe the supplements push this into “must-have” territory if you’ve had even a passing inkling to own this. Sybil Danning in HD. Enough said.

Brutal Trailer for New Berserk Anime

As a lifelong fan of both horror and Japanese animation, the news that a new Berserk anime adaptation is on the way certainly has me hooked.

The insanely violent manga series by Kentaro Miura followed two mercenaries called Guts and Griffith as they battled demons and monsters in a medieval fantasy world and has often drawn comparisons to the Dark Souls and Bloodborne games.

It quickly became infamous for its non-stop use of gore and brutal violence  and eventually sold over 35 million copies. It’s been adapted into an anime series and several films before, with the teaser for the latest adaptation being shown at NBC Universal’s winter Comic Market 89 booth, but we don’t yet know whether it will be a film, OVA, or TV series. But at least it captures the nastiness of the manga.

They’ve also set up a website so check it out. If you can speak Japanese, that is.

Gallery to Showcase the Work of Late Godzilla Poster Artist Noriyoshi Ōrai

It’s always great to see people getting praised and acknowledged for their work, even if it is after their passing. Noriyoshi Ōrai, who was responsible for illustrating many of the classic Godzilla movie posters, sadly passed away in October.

The Parco Gallery X in Shibuya, Japan, will showcase all of his work, running through January, with a focus on his Godzilla posters. So if, however unlikely it may seem, you’re lucky enough to be in the area at the time, then you should definitely check it out.

Ōrai, who also created official art for franchises such as Star Wars, Gundam, and Metal Gear, was a legend in the industry… and rightly so. Looking at the images below; I really don’t think that I can come up with an elegant enough way to describe how beautiful they are.

Silent Retreat (2015)

Silent RetreatStarring Donny Boaz, Rebecca Pitkin, Danilo Di Julio

Directed by Ace Jordan

Those good old company get-togethers… they attempt to serve so much of a purpose: to gather fellow (or non-fellow) workers under one roof in the hopes of creating a tight workplace bond, with the deep desire of keeping their minions happy, and overall expecting the bitching to be kept to a minimum when the workload is eventually ratcheted up. Any kind of outing will do, be it a quiet retreat, possibly a picnic if they’re lucky – but what happens when among the tightly spaced employees sits a brutal killer, simply waiting to strike?

Director Ace Jordan delivers Silent Retreat to the masses, a very nice (albeit slow at times) look at a collection of laborers who might not make it out of this particular soiree all in the name of employee appreciation. In this case, we follow six media members who attend a secluded lodge in the woods (sounds like trouble already) for a little integration with one another, and at the risk of blowing up what is really a fun little production, I’ll keep the inner workings of this one to myself.

However, rest assured, after a seemingly mile-long jaunt into character development hell, the remainder of the film progresses quite nicely. Now we all know that it wouldn’t be me if I didn’t cling on to the back of the negative like a parasite, and for the most part, this film has a few. Slower than slow progression into the personalities of the workers, the REAL reason why this secluded retreat is now so secluded, and a few acting blunders are all par for the course.

You’d think with the aforementioned laundry list of faux pas that this flick would be doomed from the get-go… no, no, no! All together, once the rough edges were buffed out, Jordan puts out a fairly fun watch that blends equal parts of dark humor, chilling moments, and nice sprays of gore from time to time, all adding up to a neat twist towards the end of the film, so you’ve got a moderately decent watch if this one happens to make it your way.

Recommended, but please… if there ever is a sign-up sheet at your job for an employee retreat, do a little research into where you’ll be spending your time, as it can only be a self-preserving boon to your health.
