New Clip from The Witch Tries to Get Your Goat

I don’t think we could be more excited about seeing The Witch if we tried.  Here to make sure you’re on the same page is a new clip from the film presented in conjunction with our friends at CryptTV.

In this exquisitely made and terrifying new horror film, which debuts on February 19th, the age-old concepts of witchcraft, black magic, and possession are innovatively brought together to tell the intimate and riveting story of one family’s frightful unraveling.

Directed and written by Robert Eggers, The Witch (review) stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie, Harvey Scrimshaw, Ellie Grainger, and Lucas Dawson.

To learn more, visit the official The Witch website, “like” The Witch on Facebook, and follow The Witch on Twitter. Be sure to use #TheWitchMovie and @TheWitchMovie in your posts!

Synopsis:
Set in New England circa 1630, The Witch follows a farmer who get cast out of his Colonial plantation and is forced to move his family to a remote plot of land on the edge of an ominous forest rumored to be controlled by witches. Almost immediately, strange and unsettling things begin to happen–the animals turn violent, the crops fail, and one of the children disappears, only to return seemingly possessed by an evil spirit.  As suspicion and paranoia mount, everyone begins to point the finger at teenage daughter Thomasin. They accuse her of witchcraft, which she adamantly denies… but as circumstances become more and more treacherous, each family member’s faith, loyalty, and love will be tested in shocking and unforgettable ways.

Writer/director Robert Eggers’ debut feature, which premiered to great acclaim at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival (and won the Best Director Prize in the U.S. Narrative Competition), painstakingly recreates a God-fearing New England decades before the 1692 Salem witch trials, in which religious convictions and pagan folklore famously clashed. Told through the eyes of the adolescent Thomasin — in a star-making turn by newcomer Anya Taylor-Joy — and supported by mesmerizing camera work and a powerful musical score, The Witch is a chilling and groundbreaking new take on the genre.

The Doom reboot will be released on Friday the 13th in May of this year for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, as confirmed by publisher Bethesda. This is kind of a big deal for us as it’s pretty much the most anticipated horror game of the year so we’ll definitely be marking the date in our calendars.

And if you’re an old school gamer like me who prefers to play games for their story modes rather than multiplayer, then have a look at the new campaign trailer below.

Synopsis:
Bethesda Softworks®, a ZeniMax® Media company, today announced that DOOM will be available worldwide on Friday, May 13, 2016, for the Xbox One, PlayStation® 4 computer entertainment system, and PC. DOOM, the iconic game that defined a genre and is considered one of the most influential games ever made, returns as a brutally fun and challenging modern-day shooter experience.

DOOM is under development at id Software®, the studio that pioneered the first-person shooter genre and invented multiplayer Deathmatch. Relentless demons, impossibly destructive guns, and fast, fluid movement provide the foundation for intense, first-person combat – whether you’re obliterating demon hordes through the depths of Hell in the single-player campaign or competing against your friends in numerous multiplayer modes. Expand your gameplay experience using DOOM SnapMap™ game editor to easily create, play, and share your content with the world. DOOM garnered numerous E3 2015 awards, and in a recent preview Game Informer aptly described the gameplay as “an absolute blast.”

Bethesda also revealed plans to release a premium collector’s edition of DOOM that will be available across the globe through participating retailers. The limited DOOM collector’s edition, created in conjunction with TriForce, includes an exclusive, fully-realized 12” tall collector’s statue of one of the game’s most iconic demons: the Revenant. Modeled from actual in-game 3D files and striking in appearance, the demonic Revenant stands on an LED-lit base with internal, slow-spinning turbine from the UAC facility on Mars. The DOOM collector’s edition also includes a copy of the game packaged in an exclusive, battle-worthy metal case.

The DOOM collector’s edition is available for pre-order through participating retailers and is priced at $119.99 (US), €129.99 (Europe), and £99.99 (UK). Players pre-ordering the DOOM collector’s edition or the standard edition of the game will receive the Demon Multiplayer Pack, which contains a unique demon armor set with three skin variations, six metallic paint colors, and three id® logo patterns that can be applied to weapons and armor, plus a set of six Hack Modules – one-time consumable items that can give you an edge in a multiplayer match.

When the folks at Cinema Epoch asked us if we wanted to debut a “gory and disturbing” new clip from their upcoming twisted thriller Sociopathia, of course we said yes.  We know our audience, after all, so this one’s for you guys!  Just don’t say we didn’t warn you!

Sociopathia Release Details:
Following a limited theatrical run and a “Best Director” nomination from the 2015 Tampa Bay Underground Film Festival for co-directors Ruby Larocca and Rich Mallery, SOCIOPATHIA, a twisted cross between Maniac and American Mary, arrives on DVD, VOD, and Digital on February 9, courtesy of genre specialists Cinema Epoch.

Introverted and peculiar, Mara (Tammy Jean) spends her days fabricating props for movies. But her reclusive persona conceals an internal wrath. Terrified of being alone, Mara refuses to let her victims leave, sadistically murdering them and keeping their corpses as living dolls. When she’s hired by Kat (Asta Paredes), a fledgling producer, the two instantly hit it off. As their relationship grows more intense, Mara begins to lose her already fragile grip on reality. When her “dolls” begin demanding all of her attention and Kat threatens to break her heart, Mara spirals into psychosis, leaving her no choice but to kill again.

In addition to Jean and Paredes, the SOCIOPATHIA cast includes Nicola Fiore (who also appeared opposite Larocca in Slaughter Daughter), Nicolette Le Faye (President’s Day, Call Girl of the Cthulu), Tabetha Ray (Bullets for Jesus, Caveat), Morris County director Matthew Garrett, and Beneath the Underground founder Nick DeCarlo. Call Girl’s Jason M. Koch and Kaleigh Brown added the blood-splashed makeup FX.

If there’s one person on Earth I consider to be one of the remaining horror gods, it would be George A. Romero. The man has invented, changed, and then reinvented the way things are done in the business countless times.

It’s with great pleasure that we take a moment to wish him a very happy and healthy 76th birthday! Romero, born on this day in 1940 in New York City, New York, went on to produce and direct many of the celebrated classics of our genre including the “Dead” franchise, which began in 1968 with Night of the Living Dead. The man’s still working to this very day, and we look forward to more from him in the future!

Happy birthday, George… may you live to walk the earth forever. Much love…

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: What Scene from the Book Do We Hope to See on the Screen?

$

0

First off, the whole concept of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies REALLY appeals to me, being a huge fan of both The Walking Dead and the novels of Jane Austen (quite the range there, eh?). So, when I was asked to write about which scene from P&P&Z the novel I was most looking forward to seeing on the screen, I was at first at a loss.

The dance where Lizzie first meets Darcy? The Netherfield Ball? Random zombie attacks?  Nothing quite fit. But then it hit me… my favorite scene in both Austen’s original novel and again in the mashup: Elizabeth Bennet’s “showdown” with the imperious Lady Catherine de Bourgh. A bitchy scene in the book with Lizzie wonderfully holding her own against the uber-snobby much older aristocrat, in P&P&Z this scene becomes a fight almost to the death with Lady Catherine’s ninjas, their throwing stars, and her nunchucks; Lizzie’s katana (hello, Michonne!); and the bitchy rudeness, again, of Lady Catherine (“Obstinate, headstrong girl!“).

If this scene plays out on screen as well as it did in P&P&Z, then Elizabeth Bennet (Lily James) and the nasty Lady Catherine (Lena Headey) should put on QUITE a show; and I for one am quite looking forward to seeing that scene, amongst ALL the other blood and mayhem of the rest of the film.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (review) opens in theaters TODAY (Friday, February 5th). Check it out!!

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies stars Lily James, Sam Riley, Jack Huston, Matt Smith, Douglas Booth, Charles Dance, Lena Headey, Ellie Bamber, Millie Brady, Bella Heathcote, and Suki Waterhouse. Burr Steers wrote the screenplay and directs.

Be sure to join the Squad on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Synopsis:
A zombie outbreak has fallen upon the land in this reimagining of Jane Austen’s classic tale of the tangled relationships between lovers from different social classes in 19th century England. Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet (James) is a master of martial arts and weaponry, and the handsome Mr. Darcy (Riley) is a fierce zombie killer, yet the epitome of upper class prejudice. As the zombie outbreak intensifies, they must swallow their pride and join forces on the blood-soaked battlefield in order to conquer the undead once and for all.

On the night of March 13, 1997, thousands of residents in Phoenix, Arizona, reported seeing lights and strange objects in the sky overhead. Many believe, to this day, it was an alien visitation. Upcoming film The Phoenix Incident is based on the events of that day, and it’s headed to limited theaters this coming March. Read on for all the details!

From the Press Release:
Call of Duty talent director Keith Arem and Concourse Media announce the U.S. national premiere of UFO conspiracy-thriller THE PHOENIX INCIDENT with Fathom Events for a one-night event on March 10, 2016, in 100+ cinemas nationwide.

Blurring the line between fiction and reality, Keith Arem’s debut feature is a fact-based, sci-fi thriller that revolves around a possible military conspiracy and the controversial missing persons case tied to the infamous 1997 event. Shot in a unique found-footage/documentary style, the feature echoes horror genre classics such as The Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield.

THE PHOENIX INCIDENT is based on the largest UFO sighting in North America, known as the Phoenix Lights. Featuring never-before-seen classified recordings and material, THE PHOENIX INCIDENT presents evidence of an extraterrestrial encounter resulting from the US Air Force’s direct engagement with an unidentified craft over the Estrella Mountains.

“THE PHOENIX INCIDENT breaks the mold of traditional productions,” said writer-director Keith Arem. “We took a transmedia approach to storytelling by incorporating everything from online sources and toll-free call-in sites to live events, mobile apps – all pushing towards a theatrical event. This thriller changes the way stories are told and builds an immersive audience experience.”

Keith Arem, a native of Arizona where UFO sightings were a frequent reality, is an accomplished gaming industry veteran who has talent directed AAA franchises including Call of Duty, Saints Row, Ghost Recon, Spiderman, Tony Haw Pro Skater, and Titanfall. He is also president of Los Angeles-based content creation company PCB Productions, specializing in interactive, film, television, and digital media.

“Keith is a man of many talents; his unique gaming background proved priceless in transforming an indie budget project into a visually rich event, rife with action and special effects that can compete on a level with bigger budget productions,” said Concourse Media co-partner James Andrew Felts. “We’re thrilled to introduce this to audiences via a smart, multi-platform strategy that takes audiences well beyond the theater walls.”

The event will be shown in 100+ theaters nationwide with Fathom Events for one night on March 10, 2016, at 7:30 p.m. local time. Tickets are available starting February 12, 2016, at FathomEvents.com and participating theater box offices.

Dark Sky Films’ latest project, Convergence, is in select theaters now, followed by digital download, Blu-ray, and DVD on February 9th.  Check out this exclusive clip!

Convergence Release Details:
A detective on the trail of a terrorist finds himself in a supernaturally charged trap where all the rules of police work go out the window in director Drew Hall’s eerily atmospheric and provocative CONVERGENCE.

Detective Ben Walls (Clayne Crawford; “Rectify,” A Walk to Remember) lives a quiet life with his wife and newborn daughter. But he’s called into action after an explosion at a local women’s health clinic – an explosion that may be the work of a terrorist bomber Ben has been tracking. While investigating the scene, another shocking event lands Ben himself in the hospital. When he awakens, he is surprisingly uninjured and ready to go back into the field. But at the behest of his captain (Mykelti Williamson; Forrest Gump, Con Air) and the hospital’s few but eerily incongruous patients and staff, Ben is forced to remain inside the building.

As Ben navigates the hospital’s alarmingly empty hallways, he soon finds himself hunted by a self-proclaimed avenging angel (Ethan Embry; Eagle Eye, Vacancy), who may be the terrorist he has been looking for, and haunted by apparitions whose deadly motives remain a mystery. As Ben’s sense of reality begins to spiral out of control and the demons that surround him close in, he must find a way to both stop the supernatural forces that want him dead and catch the bomber before he strikes again.

A modern-day myth about redemption that’s equal parts crime thriller, supernatural horror, and action spectacle, CONVERGENCE will keep you guessing at every turn of its twisting plot right up until the last shocking frame.

Also starring in this gripping and unsettling film are Chelsea Bruland (Left Behind), Gary Grubbs (JFK), Laura Cayouette (Django Unchained), and Catalina Soto-Aguilar (“Sons of Liberty”).

We love monsters here at Dread Central… We also loves movies about creating monsters, and that’s exactly what’s on tap with Creature Designers: The Frankenstein Complex! Read on for details, a trailer, and other goodies.

Alexandre Poncet and Gilles Penso’s film features Guillermo Del Toro, Joe Dante, John Landis, and more.

Synopsis:
The success of Avatar, Jurassic World, the Planet of the Apes reboot, and series like The Lord of the Rings has proved one thing: Movie creatures have never been as popular as they are today.

Finding its roots in ancient folklore and mythology, the art of creating monsters for the big screen is, on the other hand, as old as cinema itself. From early experiments with apes and dinosaurs to the birth of special make-up effects, from the pinnacle of animatronics to the digital revolution, Creature Designers: The Frankenstein Complex explores a century of cinematic thrills and wonders. Most importantly, the feature film focuses on the relationship between the creatures and their makers: Like modern Frankensteins, special effects wizards create life out of raw material, art, and complex machinery.

For two and a half years, Gilles Penso and Alexandre Poncet have met all the greatest artists in the genre, visited dozens of studios, and gathered hours of exclusive footage from classics like Gremlins, Ghostbusters, The Abyss, Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, Starship Troopers, and Spider-Man 2. The result celebrates a world of human imagination and unparalleled artistry but also shows how fragile traditional crafts have become in the wake of futurist technologies.

Go Behind the Scenes of SundanceTV’s Hap and Leonard

Hands down the best thing about the short-lived “The Following” was actor James Purefoy so when we heard he’ll next be seen in SundanceTV’s adaptation of Joe R. Lansdale’s Hap and Leonard, we were pretty stoked.  The series premieres on March 2nd, and to help get you as excited about it as we are, here’s a behind-the-scenes look with stars Purefoy, Michael Kenneth Williams, and Christina Hendricks as well as executive producer/director/writer Jim Mickle.

Based on the successful books from famed author Joe R. Lansdale, the six-episode event series is created by director/writer Mickle and writer Nick Damici, who also partnered on the film adaptation of Lansdale’s Cold in July. Set in the late 1980s, “Hap and Leonard” is a darkly comic swamp noir story of two best friends, one femme fatale, a crew of washed-up revolutionaries, a pair of murderous psycho-killers, some lost loot, and the fuzz.

The story follows Hap Collins (Purefoy), an East Texas white boy with a weakness for Southern women, and Leonard Pine (Williams), a gay, black Vietnam vet with a hot temper. When Hap’s seductive ex-wife, Trudy (Hendricks), resurfaces with a deal they can’t refuse, a simple get-rich-quick scheme snowballs into bloody mayhem. Chock full of eccentric characters, “Hap and Leonard” provides a country twist on the classic mystery thriller.

Below are the synopses of the first three episodes:

“Hap and Leonard” Episode 1.01 – “Savage Season” (3/2/16)
After lifelong best friends Hap and Leonard lose their jobs, a seductive figure from Hap’s past resurfaces with a shadowy plan to score some major cash. Meanwhile, a menacing pair descends upon the duo’s hometown.

“Hap and Leonard” Episode 1.02 – “The Bottoms” (3/9/16)
Enticed by Trudy, Hap and Leonard begin their search for the lost loot with new compatriots Howard (Bill Sage), Chub (Jeff Pope), and Paco (Neil Sandilands). Leonard receives distressing news about his Uncle Chester.

“Hap and Leonard” Episode 1.03 – “The Dive” (3/16/16)
As the group closes in on the stolen money, Hap, Leonard, and Trudy revisit their pasts. Loyalties are tested within the gang during a fateful gathering at Leonard’s house.

Ethan Hawke is one of the few A-list actors who regularly dabble in the horror genre, and the results are usually great. So we’re pretty stoked to learn that he’s signed on to 24 Hours to Live from Thunder Road Pictures and Chinese production company Fundamental Films, in which he’ll play an assassin who is killed on the job, only to be resurrected by his employer and given a shot at redemption.

Brian Smrz, known for the 2008 straight-to-DVD action flick Hero Wanted, will direct with writer Zachary Dean adapting an earlier script from Ron Mita and Jim McClain.

The international rights for 24 Hours to Live will be featured at Berlin’s European Film Market next week, so we expect to be hearing a lot more about this one in the near future.

You’ll be forgiven for looking at the artwork below and thinking that it comes from the upcoming Friday the 13th video game. In actuality, Dead by Daylight is an upcoming horror title from Starbreeze, the developer of the highly acclaimed 2007 comic book adaptation The Darkness.

And while comparisons to Mr. Voorhees’ upcoming video game outing are inevitable, as they’re both asymmetrical multiplayers with one person controlling the killer and the other as the potential victims, keep in mind that Starbreeze has a smooth track record, so expect another hit. Check out the dev diary video below, and head over to the game’s Steam page to stay updated.

Synopsis:
Dead by Daylight is both an action and survival horror multiplayer game in which one crazed, unstoppable killer hunts four survivors through a terrifying nightmarish world in a deadly game of cat and mouse.

Key Features

  • As a Survivor go in alone, or team up with friends to face an unknown threat. Use equipment at hand, unlocked abilities and environmental objects to outwit the monster and escape from his killing ground.
  • Sent into a procedurally generated world, you’ll never know what to expect, what you’re facing, and how to get away. You will have to make stressful choices under desperate circumstances. Every decision impacts your chances of survival.
  • Killers come from all horror genres, from brutal slashers to terrifying paranormal entities. Master these monsters’ unique powers and exploit the knowledge of your “home” to track, hunt down, break, and sacrifice your victims before they get a chance to run to safety.
  • The asymmetry, procedural factors and unique thinking of human individuals make each Dead by Daylight match an unexpected scenario where the combined behavior of each player creates a truly terrifying and thrilling narrative.
  • Dead by Daylight characters have deep progressions and unlockables which can be customized into your own personal strategy. Use your experience, skills, and load-out to climb up the competitive ladder; and you might eventually discover the truth beyond the fog.

Amityville Toilet Brings the Terror Straight to Your Anus

Although I love serious and straightforward horror movies, my true passion for the genre leans more towards the strange and unusual. So when someone launches a project for a flick called Amityville Toilet, I tend to get excited. Scratch that — very excited.

If I had tons of cash just gathering dust in a bank somewhere, I’d gladly fund projects like this all day long. Alas, I’m just a poor stooge with access to a website that allows me to spread the word. Depending on who you are, that’s either a blessing or a curse. I know where some of you fall on that matter.

Everything you really need to know about Amityville Toilet is right there in the title. Long story short: Someone ends up with a toilet from the original Amityville house, which, of course, is not a good thing. Bowel movements are about to get a hell of a lot more terrifying.

Synopsis:
Amityville Toilet is the horrific story of a family remolding their home with more than they bargained for. For no logical reason at all, the toilet from the original Amityville house is installed in the Willson’s family bathroom. At first, it works like a charm; the family enjoys pooping into it daily. Then, without warning, the Evil of Amityville escapes through the pipes and into the anus of Tom Willson. Now under the control of Amityville’s evil, the Willson family must fight to survive and flush the demons back into the bowels of hell once and for all.

If, like myself, you strongly believe that premise borderlines on the realm of absolute genius, then swing by the official GoFundMe campaign and give them some cash. Immediately.

The first official teaser for 100 Bloody Acres directors Colin and Cameron Cairnes’ Scare Campaign dropped late last year, giving folks a chance to see what this upcoming horror opus has to offer the masses. In short, the film explores what happens when a show dedicated to fear-related trickery ends up picking on the wrong psychopath. If you’ve ever wanted to see some pranksters meet their maker after ruining some poor bastard’s day, then this might scratch that itch.

Synopsis:
Popular prank TV show “Scare Campaign” has been entertaining audiences for the last five years with its mix of old school scares and hidden camera fun. But as we enter a new age of online TV, the producers find themselves up against a new hard-edged web series which makes their show look decidedly quaint. It’s time to up the ante, but will the team go too far this time, and are they about to prank the wrong guy?

Scare Campaign, which stars Olivia DeJonge, Meegan Warner, Ian Meadows, and Josh Quong Tart, should arrive at some point later this year. Check out the first official trailer below.
