Frankenstein’s Army Director Shares The Profudis Concept Art

Crazy creatures and the horrors of war were at the center of 2013 horror flick Frankenstein’s Army, and with his second feature, director Richard Raaphorst looks to be playing around with similar ideas. His next creature feature is titled The Profundis, and he just showed off some concept art over on Twitter.

The art shows a large vessel that appears to be turning into a tentacled monster, and as Raaphorst recently told Rue Morgue, a ship does indeed undergo such a transformation in the film. So too does the crew, who find themselves mutating into horrifying monsters.

It’s about a group of smugglers using an old-fashioned U-boat, collaborating with a Christian terrorist cell to smuggle a secret biological weapon,” Raaphorst explained to the site. “It starts to leak into the submarine and infect the crew, and they devolve back into subhuman monsters. This story continues my fascination with military horror, but also my fascination with creatures, and trying to come up with something I’ve never seen before.”

Head over to Rue Morgue for more art and info, and be sure to follow @RichRaaphorst on Twitter!

We’re always up for some Irish horror and we’ve got more headed our way in the form of Let Us Prey director Brian O’Malley’s The Lodgers. With casting complete, filming has officially kicked off over in Ireland, and what immediately piques our interest about this one is that it’s being filmed inside a real haunted locale.

Per Deadline, Epic Pictures Group’s gothic horror story was scripted by David Turpin and stars David Bradley (“The Strain”),  Eugene Simon (“Game of Thrones”), Bill Milner, Charlotte Vega, and Moe Dunford.

The story follows a sister (Vega) and brother (Milner) haunted by a secret curse that forces them to remain in the large estate home left to them by their dead parents. But when a young man (Simon) who falls in love with the sister tries to free her, his attempt sets off a deadly chain reaction.

The Lodgers is filming primarily at Loftus Hall, Ireland’s most famous purported haunted house, which is beset — so local legend holds — by the ghost of a young woman and the devil himself.

At the end of August we learned that TNT had finalized a deal for a “Let the Right One In” pilot based on the best-selling novel by Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist.  Now some casting news has arrived…

Per Deadline, Kristine Froseth (Rebel in the Rye) will portray the female lead, a charismatic vampire named Eli.

Jeff Davis (“Criminal Minds,” “Teen Wolf”) wrote the script and serves as executive producer with Marty Adelstein (“Aquarius,” “Teen Wolf”) and Becky Clements (“Aquarius”) of Tomorrow Studios and Simon Oakes (Let Me In) of Hammer Films. The pilot is being produced by Tomorrow Studios in association with Turner’s Studio T.

“Let the Right One In” will center on Henry, a young boy, long tormented by his classmates, who finds solace in a friendship with Eli, who appears to be near his age. The vampire settles into the boy’s small Vermont town with her mysterious caretaker, just as a series of bizarre murders begins attracting the attention of law enforcement.

TNT’s pilot will draw from the original source material. Carl Molinder, who produced the original screenplay, and Alex Brunner (Dark Places) also serve as executive producers on the TNT adaptation.

10 Most Underrated Horror Movies to Watch Right Now

Great horror movies have a tendency of flying under the radar. Though many masterpieces have rightfully gained their place in the pantheon of exceptional cinematography, horror is not for everyone, and as such, many gems lie hidden for year and years. This list will highlight some of these hidden jewels, both old and new.

Be warned; this is not the usual “Best Halloween movies on Netflix” type of article. Many of these stories can be quite brutal or disturbing. Others might seem a bit dull if you’re only in it for the jump-scares or the gore, but trust us when we say that a true horror movie fan will definitely enjoy them.

man-watching-fuzzy-screen-in-the-dark

1.      Session 9 (2001)

Session 9 is perhaps one of the most popular underrated horror stories out there. It’s a very cerebral horror movie that relies more on its atmosphere to induce a sense of dread in its audience. The gorgeous lighting makes it all the more unnerving since it seems to flaunt every single horror movie rule in the book. Everything is calm, still, and peaceful and dreadfully wrong.

2.      Suspiria

Legendary director Dario Argento claims the visual inspiration for the movie came from Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. The plot of the movie involves an aspiring ballerina, who goes to prestigious ballet school in Freiburg. She soon discovers the school is not what it appears to be. There might be a remake in the works, though Argento himself is not very enthusiastic about the project.

3.      REC (2007)

Audiences might be more familiar with the American remake, Quarantine (2008), of this Spanish movie. Quarantine is definitely a movie worth watching, but the devil is in the details. At first glance, REC is a typical zombie outbreak tale, complete with government conspiracies and society slowly disintegrating into chaos. But what makes this movie unique is that it focuses on the very first moments of the zombie outbreak, rather than fast-forwarding, as many zombie movies do, months in the future.

The Purge TV Series Being Actively Developed; First Details

Wouldn’t it be kinda cool if The Purge franchise expanded beyond the world of film? A spinoff TV series is something we’ve often pondered over the years, and it seems that creator James DeMonaco has been pondering the same thing. In fact, a television series is currently being developed!

Speaking with Cinema Blend, DeMonaco spilled the beans.

Dude, it’s so weird you bring that up,” replied DeMonaco, when interviewer Eric Eisenberg questioned him about a future Purge TV series. “Yes! Not an anthology… I guess kind of an anthology — more of an interwoven anthology. They came to me about a TV show, my idea is that you do six or seven storylines. And I would kind of intercut them, use flashbacks.”

The idea of why I like the idea of a maybe 10 hour TV thing on this, the one thing you really can’t do on the films is, just because of mere real estate and time, is you can’t get into the nuance and complexity that would drive someone to commit a terrible act on this night,” he continued. “Whether it’s revenge or out of passion, but what might be interesting in a TV show is with a flashback narrative, if you start on Purge Night but you go back to show how people have gotten to where they are. Where you see a couple that’s gone haywire on this night, but let’s show everything that’s led up to this moment of a husband trying to kill a wife — the cheating or the accusations of cheating or money problems. It will be interesting to show those arcs, those dramatic and complex arcs that get people to where they pick up a gun or a knife and kill someone else.”

I think there’s something cool that we can do with the real estate of TV — 10 hours, potentially.”

DeMonaco also noted that we could potentially see the series within the next year.

They’re far ahead on the TV front… pretty far ahead,” he said. “Not to get into the nuance of how it all goes down, we’re talking about deals right now, money is being spoken about. Things like that. So I think it’s being taken very seriously from the higher-ups who obviously dictate everything.”

The Scary Clown Thing Goes Too Far in Reading, Pennsylvania

For the past several months now we’ve been steadily reporting on people dressed as clowns luring kids into the woods or just being random menaces. Some have speculated that it’s a PR stunt for the new version of Stephen King’s It, but we can ABSOLUTELY assure you it is NOT!

Sadly, in Reading, Pennsylvania. things have gone too far as according to the Reading Eagle, police are trying to figure out who stabbed a 16-year-old to death during a fight that broke out after a person showed up wearing a clown mask.

District Attorney John T. Adams said police are searching for witnesses.

We urge anyone who was there to contact the Reading police,” Adams said. “Someone was wearing a clown mask, and a fight broke out. Anyone who knows anything about this, please contact the Reading police.

Police said they arrived at 8:30 p.m., responding to reports of a victim lying on a front porch of a row home. Investigators said there was a large crowd in the street when officers arrived. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday night in Reading Hospital.

But wait… that’s not all! MSN is reporting that five days later, Reading, Ohio (in a strange coincidence, both towns have the same name), schools are closed Friday after a woman reported being attacked by a male dressed as a clown. The woman told police that her attacker made a threat against students.

Reading police said Kim Youngblood was smoking a cigarette on her porch at South Terrace Apartments when the clown appeared. The male grabbed Youngblood by the throat and reportedly stated, “I should just kill you now.

According to Youngblood, the clown then said “that some students and teachers would wish they were never born at the junior and senior high school today.

Youngblood told police the male fled after an alarm went off in a nearby apartment. The male grabbed Youngblood’s throat harder for a second before fleeing, police stated in the release.

The male suspect was reportedly wearing a striped outfit, red wig, and white clown mask.

Okay, now can we stop the madness?

Monsters in the Woods Gets a Director’s Cut

Many years ago I had the opportunity to review writer/director Jason Horton’s horror anthology film Edges of Darkness (review). It was a tight little number that looked at a few interesting scenarios that were occurring during a zombie apocalypse. Cut to 2012 and Horton’s creature feature Monsters in the Woods hits with a limited release and totally misses my attention.

Thankfully now we’re getting a director’s cut of the film. Monsters in the Woods has been entirely re-edited. Horton has made extensive changes that include: alternate takes, new footage, and an overhaul to the film’s structure. Check out Gas Money Picture’s website for more updates as they roll in.

Conrad Faraj Gives Us an Exclusive Scoop on The Colours of Desire

$

We’re starting to develop something of an obsession with filmmaker Conrad Faraj round these parts. In addition to his films Fighting the Sky and The Wolf Family Treasure, which we’re dying to see, we’ve now learned that he has an all-new project in development called The Colours of Desire. I wonder if the guy ever sleeps.

You can read some exclusive details about The Colours of Desire below straight from the man himself:

Production Overview:
On July 25, 2016, I was side-blinded by an idea. It was one of those moments where I thought the idea may be good enough to be made into a feature sometime in the future. A few days went by and I suddenly realized that I needed to create this story right away. It was like an impulse. I was on vacation visiting family in Cleveland, Ohio, and I had just wrapped production on a feature just a mere few months prior, but I still had this hunger to create. At first I conceived it as an extended short… something close to being a feature, but short enough to be something else.

I wrote the script in 12 days. When completed, I had a very interesting, macabre, but strangely unique little script. Then it came down to a crucial decision. Do I shoot this film now while on vacation and spend the next 2 weeks meticulously planning it day and night, or do I wait a few months and let the project grow in my head a little longer? Somewhere deep down, I knew that if I didn’t do it now, I may possibly never make this film. So I went against my better judgement, took out some small loans, assembled a team, auditioned some actors, and started production.

Filming took approximately 15 days and ended the first week of September. We had been editing the film simultaneously while shooting, and as of September 25, 2016, we have begun submitting to film festivals around the world. The film ended up being much longer than anticipated, running at 102 minutes. A lot of the filmmaking legends have always shared similar advice: The best way to become a filmmaker is to go out and make your film. I ignored every guideline I was ever given about making films, and I did just that. I dove right in with very little time to prepare and came out with something that I am hugely proud of. It was an extreme exercise in filmmaking. The notion in itself was crazy: making an entire feature film in 2 months. But we did it, and I cannot wait to share the fruits of our labor.

The film stars Nick Earl, Roger Conners, Megan King, Rachel Anderson, Steven Farris, John Maslowski, Aron Long, and Jim Strang.  It was produced by Greg Kraus, Jason Ross, Floria Aguilera, and Conrad Faraj, who wrote and directed.

Synopsis:
When a quiet vagabond named Vantser discovers a dead body, he gifts it to a powerful man known as Termas, whose desire for corpses spawns supernatural abilities that can create impossible wishes.

After being promised one of these impossible wishes, Vantser vows to bring two more corpses to Termas and sets out on a macabre journey where he must fight his inner demons and decide for himself if his wish is worth the burden taking lives might bear.

Warcraft (Blu-ray)

$

0

warcraftposterStarring Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Dominic Cooper, Toby Kebbell

Directed by Duncan Jones

Distributed by Universal Pictures

I had actually been avoiding seeing this movie. I’ve been a Warcraft fan since Orcs & Humans. I’ve played all the strategy games through, and even did my time in WoW. My most recent addiction is Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, which I comfortably dump at least two hours into daily. Overall, there’s no telling just how much time and money I’ve sunk into the lands of Azeroth (and the Outlands). So this film should be perfect for me, right?

Well, as much as I love the series, I’ve never been a huge fan of the constant World of Warcraft retcon. Back in my day, orcs were green, and everyone was just fine with it. With each new expansion, they kept trying to extend the lore at the expense of the core story. Now we have brown orcs, red orcs, green orcs, space goats, and pandas. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that we have to take a story about interdimensional orcs fighting an eternal war against mankind seriously. I’m just saying that there’s a long history of messing with the Warcraft lore, and I wasn’t exactly excited to see how they continued that tradition in the film.

But hey, if Universal wants to send me the movie, I’ll watch it. I was aware that this was a telling of the events from the first game, but with the retcon of recent lore. Whatever, as long as there aren’t too many space goats, I’ll be fine.

I’m pleased to say that this is probably the best retelling of the Warcraft lore since Warcraft 3 made The Horde stop being the bad guys. The film had two hours to introduce a world, explain the events of the first game, find a way to include all of the newer plot elements, and still have time to make us care about the characters. And by golly, it seems like Duncan Jones did it.

First off, the visuals in the film are stunning. It’s hard to believe we’ve gotten to the point that CGI characters can look this good. The amount of subtle nuance in these 700 pound monsters is incredible. When you have real actors fighting CGI monsters, it can come off looking really goofy, but that never even crossed my mind while watching. It never feels like real actors interacting with cartoons.

It’s not just the CGI that impressed me. Warcraft really nails the look and feel of the games. This is a world where everything is exaggerated. Shields are the size of people, swords are five feet long, orcs ride on giant wolves, and wizards fling magic all over the place. It’s deliberately cartoony. How they translated that into the real world was magnificent. The oversized trees of Elwynn Forest were immediately recognizable, and the layout of the inn took me right back to the Hillsbrad Foothills. It would be really easy to make it all look just slightly overdone, a little too goofy, but for me it never crossed that threshold.

If I were to pick the weakest part of Warcraft, it would be the uneven characters. There are simply too many people to really care about them all. King Llane in particular felt hollow, as we just didn’t get enough time with him to figure out what kind of a leader he was. I also wish that key characters got more screentime, such as Orgrim Doomhammer. He’s an absolutely massive part of the lore, but was more of Durotan’s sidekick in the film. Other than that, there were some really strong performances by Travis Fimmel as Anduin Lothar and Ben Schnetzer as Khadgar. Seeing these legendary characters brought to life and done so well was a treat.

The plot also felt rushed in places. When Garona eventually has to do her thing (that I won’t say because it would be a big spoiler), it comes off as random and out of character. To be fair, it was also pretty poorly explained in the game. The worst part was the final fight between Blackhand and Lothar. The whole movie builds up to this epic showdown, and it’s over in two seconds. Did they just run out of money? With a budget of $100 million, I doubt it.

What’s amazing to me was how little I cared about the plot changes. I’m a massive lore nerd, so I’m exactly the kind of person that would get miffed by the slightest alteration. They did change some stuff in Warcraft, but it was all in the service of making the overall film better. Of the things they did change, almost none of it compromised the integrity of the narrative. If you’re going to have to change things to adapt a video game into a film, this is how you do it.

I said almost none of it, because there was one change that really bugged me. This is my paragraph to nerd rage a bit. In the film Warcraft, Anduin Lothar is the one who takes down Blackhand. In the game, it was Orgrim Doomhammer. This is a massive change. In the game, Doomhammer takes down Blackhand to wrest control of The Horde away from Gul’dan and the Shadow Council. It’s a turning point for The Horde, reasserting the warrior rule and purging the corruption from the highest ranks. In the film, they changed it to Lothar because he was grumpy that Blackhand killed his son. It just doesn’t have the same impact. I understand how it was in service of making the film have a more complete arc, but it’s a big change to the integrity of the world.

As a fan, it was great to see this world I’ve spent so much time with come to life. What was even more fun was getting to nerd out about it for the rest of the night to my girlfriend. She’s never played a Warcraft game, and after the movie wanted to know more. It was special for me to see that same spark of interest in her that grew in me all those years ago. There’s something magical about Warcraft, a rich wonder that has drawn so many people in for decades. It’s not a perfect film, but that wonder is alive here.

Speaking of wonder, with all of the great visuals on display, it was almost impossible that the special features wouldn’t be at least interesting. There’s plenty of that here, with an excellent series of vignettes titled “The World of Warcraft on Film.” I’m always a fan of alternate endings and stuff, but really for me the mark of a good special feature is that it helps you appreciate the movie more. I have to say, after watching what exactly it took to bring this all to life, I’m deeply impressed. I had no idea how much I cared about costume design until I learned about the level of detail that went into crafting all of the armor and outfits.

A special feature I liked on a more personal level was “The Fandom of Warcraft.” Honestly, I’m not one to reminisce, but seeing the earnest display of love for a series I used to be so involved in really brought me back. It took me right back to my days in S.T.R.I.K.E., my teenage guild that raided the likes of Icecrown Citadel and Black Temple on the server Coilfang. “The Fandom of Warcraft” didn’t really add to the film, but it was a nice, warm moment that fans like me will surely be able to relate to.

Other than that, we have some pretty stock deleted scenes, a gag reel, and filler. The only really bad feature is the “Warcraft: Bonds of Brotherhood” motion comic. The voice acting was terrible, and plot total nonsense. It’s supposed to give you some insight into the events leading up to the film, but it really just sucked.

Special Features:

  • Deleted Scenes
  • Gag Reel
  • The Fandom of Warcraft
  • ILM: Behind the Magic of Warcraft
  • Warcraft: Bonds of Brotherhood Motion Comic
  • The World of Warcraft on Film: Talent, VFX, Stunts, and More
  • Warcraft: The Madame Tussauds Experience
  • Warcraft Teaser 2013

Rob Kazinsky on Bringing Orgrim Doomhammer to Life in Warcraft

For many gamers, there’s nothing more sacred than the Warcraft universe. Many of us, myself included, have spent over a decade exploring the lands of Azeroth in World of Warcraft. Others have spent years playing the different custom maps of Warcraft III, from which the titanic Dota would spawn.

It’s hard to think of any franchise that has shaped the trend of modern gaming more. From the blending of RPG and strategy elements to the explosion of the MMO marketplace, Warcraft has always been at the forefront of setting the trends. And that’s not even mentioning Blizzard’s other genre defining titles like Diablo or the recent Overwatch.

But we don’t just love these games because they are good. We love the universes they create, with Warcraft in particular shaping a world that rivals any high fantasy setting ever conceived. It’s constantly evolving, changing from expansion to expansion, but at its core is a fundamentally gripping story of orcs vs humans. Even from the start, it was clear that Warcraft was a different beast. I remember as a kid buying the old Warcraft box set, complete with Orcs & Humans, Tides of Darkness, and Beyond the Dark Portal. In it were the various lore books, a novella’s worth of backstory for each game. At a time when strategy games were just so many blocky pixels on a screen, it’s these stories that captured my imagination. I remember sitting at the pool after swim practice, pouring over the exploits of characters like Anduin Lothar and Orgrim Doomhammer. These memories are integral to what made me the gamer I am today.

So if you read my recent review for the Warcraft film, you’ll see that I had but one real problem with their handling of the lore. I was always more of a Horde kid than Alliance, and no self-respecting orc fan doesn’t recognize the name Orgrim Doomhammer. His exploits are legendary, and his mythic Doomhammer lives today in both World of Warcraft and Hearthstone (to the bane of many control players; screw you, aggro Shaman). Hell, even The Horde’s capital city of Orgrimmar is his namesake. So when Anduin Lothar was given the role of slaying Blackhand instead of Orgrim, I was kinda pissed.

Now THIS is how you make some changes in leadership.

As fate would have it, I had a chance to talk to Rob Kazinsky recently, who had the honor of portraying Orgrim in the film. I really wanted to know what it was like as an actor trying to portray an eight-foot tall 700-pound orc.

Rob: “I’ve said this before in interviews, but I didn’t have much trouble with the role. As an actor, there’s a vanity to every shot. You have to worry about how the lights catch your face, if your makeup is still right, all this kind of ego that’s hard to shake. But when you’re working with mocap, you can just focus on the role. I was able to embrace becoming this monstrous hulking creature fully. Oh, I will say that my biggest problem with the role was shaving. When you do mocap you have to keep it all clean, and I’m more of a rugged beard kind of guy.”

Still, an actor markets himself on being seen. If the face on the camera isn’t yours, but some CGI character, you lose that recognizability. So as an actor, I was curious why he went for the role of Orgrim when there were so many human characters.

Rob: “I actually really pushed for the role of Orgrim. I’m a massive WoWhead, at one point I was one of the highest rated players in the world. I went down the rabbit hole hard, and for years. I had to give it up around Cataclysm, which was okay since the raid content was getting a bit too easy anyways. I’ve been thinking about picking up Legion, all my old guildies are saying it’s the best expansion since Wrath. Even though I stopped, those guild mates are still some of my best friends. They’re basically my family. I was at a really dark time in my life when I played, and it got me through. So when I was auditioning for the film, I knew I wanted a role that I could bring my level of fan love and respect to. Of course, Orgrim was my obvious choice. There’s arguably no one in the original timeline that had more influence over the events of the story. I knew that if someone was going to be playing Doomhammer, it had to be me.”

Rob Kazinsky and Orgrim Doomhammer

As a well documented nerd, there are plenty of interviews where Rob talks about the effect Warcraft had on his life. As a one-time troubled teen myself, I can honestly say that some of the best years of my life were spent with my guild. They got me through some dark days as well, and I’ll never forget them. But hey, as a huge nerd, he must have some opinion about the changes they made to the story!

Rob: “Let me say, there was a big argument on set over who was going to kill Blackhand. It’s such a big part of the story, I had a hard time accepting the change. But look, we had to make the best movie we could. It’s my personal opinion that the lore should match, but at the same time you’re making a movie, not a game. There were certain elements we had to alter to fit the runtime and make it flow. Some of the smaller things, like making Orgrim a Frostwolf instead of a Blackrock, aren’t going to really break the core of the story.  So I get why the changes were made, and I think it turned out well. But, yeah, that one I had a few words about.”

While I can see the point, I’m still going to publicly grumble about it. Grumble grumble, Horde pride, grumble grumble, Lok’tar Ogar. I’m just glad it turned out well. Regardless of my opinion however, the money is what talks most. The fact of the matter is, the film didn’t do very well in the US, but absolutely blew the foreign market out of the water. While only grossing $47.2 million Stateside, it made $386.3 million internationally, $221 million in China alone. I asked him why, in his opinion, there was such a big discrepancy.

Rob: “Hmm, yeah, it’s a big question. I think a lot of it comes from an inherent snobbishness about video game adaptations. People kind of turn up their noses when you say ‘based on a video game.’ It’s not entirely unwarranted either; Hollywood hasn’t done the best job of making good video game movies. But look, games have already been films in their own right for a long time. Some of the best stories, worlds, characters, etc., come from video games. You try to take that and boil it down into a movie, and people are going to go, ‘Wait, where’s that thing I liked?’ So yeah, there’s a lot of work we have to do to gain the trust of gamers, and I think Warcraft was a great step in that direction. We went into it with the attitude that we wanted to make the best video game movie to date, and I think we did a pretty good job.”

Durotan and Orgrim Doomhammer

With such a massive foreign profit, the prospect of a sequel is still very real. Coupled with the fact that Blizzard recently announced the formation of Activision Blizzard Studios, it’s time for the rumor mill to start whirring. I needed to know, what did Rob see for the future of the franchise?

Rob: “Our initial goal was to do a three-part trilogy, kind of like Lord of the Rings. With the first film, we covered the events of Warcraft: Orcs & Humans. There’s still the events of Tides of Darkness and Beyond the Dark Portal, which would likely be the second and third films, respectively. Honestly, I would absolutely love to keep working on these films forever. It’s exciting for me to think about what might be in store for Orgrim. He’s a huge part of the events of the Second War, and even beyond that before the events of Warcraft III. But as of now, I haven’t heard any concrete details about what’s to come.”

To be fair, even if he did know, he couldn’t tell me.

As an avid gamer, I rarely run into anyone with my same level of passion. Nerds come in all forms, but video game nerds are a special breed. We aren’t just spectators watching a show, we’re living it every day. World of Warcraft isn’t just about characters like Thrall or Varian Wrynn, it’s about us. It’s about Carithina, my Blood Elf Warlock who faced down the likes of Illidan Stormrage and Arthas Menethil. Rob is one of us, a nerd who got to do something very special: live the role as part of the world.

If you’re not a Warcraft fan, you’ve probably spent this entire article with a weird look on your face. Yes, my passion is borderline creepy to a layman. But it isn’t to anyone that understands, that’s been down that rabbit hole with me. At this point, watching the movie and learning about its origins, I can say that the more I learn about it the more I respect it. It’s leaving me hungry for what’s next, just like the games it was based on. And that really is the essence of Warcraft.

Retrospective: Don’t Go in the House (1980) – Ignore the Warning and Go In

The terribly titled Don’t Go in the House had the working title of The Burning Man and was then retitled to The Burning until the producers found out another horror production happening simultaneously was using the same title. Unfortunately, that very fine slasher was released about a year after this one. Both films actually ended up on the DDP’s infamous list of banned video nasties in the UK.

I do not know why the producers just did not go back to using The Burning Man, as it is a more suitably effective title than the uninspired one they stuck on it. Because of this, the film was lumped in with “Don’t” titled American slashers of poor quality released around the same period – the utter dreck of Don’t Go Near the Park (1979), Don’t Answer the Phone! (1980) and Don’t Go in the Woods (1981). The mainstream critics venomously spat on it and while this is no surprise considering the slasher cycle was the victim of a witch-hunt led by the typical pomposity of the late Roger Ebert and the late Gene Siskel, it is truly a shame, as this is quality filmmaking deserving more recognition. It certainly does not deserve its pitiful 5.6 IMDb rating.

Dan Grimaldi (later best known for his dual role as twins Philly and Patsy Parisi in “The Sopranos”) plays Donald Kohler (called Donny by his co-workers at an incinerator). He is a lonely soul, a deeply disturbed young man who was abused emotionally and physically as a boy by his cruel single mother. She would punish him by burning his arms by holding them over a lit gas stove to “burn the evil out”. Due to these traumatic experiences, he has developed an obsession with fire and human combustion. One day while working at the incinerator, Donny sees a co-worker have an accident catching on fire. Instead of rushing over to help him like his other co-workers, Donny just stands there staring mesmerized.

When returning home that evening Donny finds that his mother has passed away. Although he is now free of her wickedness, he does not know what to do, as his life with her was the only life he ever knew. Left with a “burning” hatred due to the cruelty she inflicted upon him and now she has left him alone in the world he sees this as an opportunity for revenge on her. He keeps her death secret and builds a flameproof steel-panelled crematorium in one of the bedrooms, hangs a hook on the ceiling with chains hanging from it, buys a flamethrower and abducts young women who bear a resemblance to his abusive late mother. He pours gasoline all over them and “In a steel room built for revenge they die burning… in chains.” As the provocative tagline says.

dgith-3

Yes, this is yet another troubled mummy’s boy horror movie obviously inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s classic 1960 masterpiece Psycho. Like Norman Bates in that, Donny keeps the corpse of his mother in one of the bedrooms of the house. He burns her body first though and then places her charred carcass in a chair. Even the setting of the house here resembles the Bates’ Gothic house and both are built on a hill. This was also not the only film released in 1980 featuring psychos with mummy issues as William Lustig’s more famous genre milestone Maniac was released later in the year. There is a couple of striking similarities between both. Donny much like Frank Zito in Maniac keeps the bodies of his victims in a room like a collection of hunting trophies but Donny places them on chairs. This is the same room where he keeps his mother’s corpse and he dresses them all in her clothes. The climax here is very reminiscent to the ending of Maniac. Although this debuted just a full six months before so both productions more likely occurred around the same time.

dgith-4

This is where the similarities between both movies end though. This is a far more restrained affair than Maniac. William Lustig opted for potent stomach churning graphic sequences one after the other. Here during the first act, director and co-writer Joseph Ellison expertly crafts a skilful emphasis on the build up to a single grand horrifying set-piece that explicitly depicts the brutal burning of a naked woman and it is sublimely executed in its shocking realism. The camera does not shy away from showing us everything as the flames consume her and she screams and withers in agony. His other victims are seen only in the aftermath of their demise as smoking burnt to a crisp corpses as we have already seen it once and do not need to see it again; we know what happens and the imagery produces such a powerful and harrowing effect it stays with us long after. That was all that was needed. Ellison knew just to show enough.

dgith-5

There is more startling grisly imagery as Donny sees the burnt corpses of his mother and his victims coming back to life to haunt him including a terrifying dream sequence. Whether this is all in his mind or is supernatural is left up to interpretation. There are several moments he hears creepy female voices – “We can help you. You’re free now. You can do anything you want to do!” He also hears his dead mother’s voice still telling him how bad he is and this and his memories of her cruelty is what sets him off. Seemingly, it is as if he is hearing the voices in his head but the final scene points to something possibly supernatural that Donny has experienced.

dgith-6

Director of Photography Oliver Wood employs a blue lighting technique to generate a cold atmosphere that encapsulates these horrid proceedings; a contrast of ice and fire then. This aesthetic complements the melancholic and sombre mood. Wood is now one of the most sought after DPs in Hollywood having provided the cinematography for such movies as Die Hard 2: Die Harder (1990), Face/Off (1997), the original Bourne Trilogy (2002 – 2007) etc. Richard Einhorn’s excellent electronic synth score is eerily effective heightening the atmosphere. Einhorn’s other great compositions in the horror genre are for Shock Waves (1977), Eyes of a Stranger (1981) and The Prowler (1981).

This is very sad stuff indeed, as Donny never had a chance at a normal life. He is also a victim here as his portrayal is sympathetic… at first. He is a complete failure in life and we cannot help but pity the poor fucker until he commits these atrocities. We felt sorry for him before but we cannot condone his evil actions later as there is no way we can identify with him killing innocent women. There is no cool anti-hero factor to him because he is so uncharismatic and awkward and the bumbling fool only manages to pick up his victims out of blind luck. This is a complex, thoughtful and responsible treatment of a serial killer character challenging us what to feel for him. Grimaldi is solid as Donny, his conviction is why his character successfully draws our sympathies and he is just as convincing as we witness Donny’s decent into homicidal madness. Most of the supporting cast turn in performances ranging from average to just above. Robert Osth is the stand out here as Donny’s co-worker Ben who offers Donny human connection with friendship.

dgith-9

Don’t Go in the House is a dark, chilling, grim and gruesome depiction of the tragic repercussions of child abuse. It is a great little film; a nasty little gem so underappreciated and is deserving of your time and a loftier placing in horror history. Ignore the warning and go in.
