The Void, the new film from cult filmmakers Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie (Father’s Day, ABC’s of Death 2), has landed distribution; and we have your details right here.

From the Press Release:
Screen Media Films has acquired U.S. rights for the horror title THE VOID (review), which is written and directed by Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski and stars Aaron Poole, Ellen Wong, Kathleen Munroe, Stephanie Belding, and Kenneth Welsh.  The film will be released in theaters day-and-date in Q1 2017. The film previously made its world premiere at Fantastic Fest earlier this year, followed by additional festival screenings at the London Film Festival, Toronto After Dark Film Festival, Stockholm International Film Festival, and Abertoir Horror Festival.

Related Story/Interview: Jeremy Gillespie, Steven Kostanski, Kathleen Munroe and Casey Walker Talk The Void

In THE VOID, officer Daniel Carter (Poole) happens upon a blood-soaked figure limping down a deserted stretch of road while he’s in the middle of a routine patrol. He rushes the young man to a nearby rural hospital staffed by a skeleton crew, only to discover that patients and personnel are transforming into something inhuman. As the horror intensifies, Carter leads the other survivors on a hellish voyage into the subterranean depths of the hospital in a desperate bid to end the nightmare before it’s too late.

“While THE VOID is in part an homage to a few of my favorite genre films, it is uniquely terrifying and disturbing – in the best ways possible. Genre fans will have a fun ride,” said Seth Needle, SVP of Worldwide Acquisitions at Screen Media.

“It has been a long road to get this film made. We fought passionately to craft a terrifying story loaded with amazing practical effects and a stellar cast. Our entire team is thrilled to have partners like Screen Media on board who want to share it with a wide audience as much as we do,” said producer Casey Walker at Cave Painting Pictures.

The deal was negotiated by Needle with Nate Bolotin and Scott Freije at XYZ Films and with CAA on behalf of the filmmakers.

THE VOID is written and directed by Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie, produced by Casey Walker and Jonathan Bronfman, executive produced by Ross Dinerstein, Todd Brown, James Norri, Jeremy Platt, Peter Graham, Steve Hays, Lon Molnar, Mic Forsey, and David Watson, with production design by Henry Fong, edited by Cam McLauchlin, cinematography by Samy Inayeh, and music by Blitz/Berlin, Menalon, and LUSTMORD. The production companies are Cave Painting Pictures and JoBro Productions.

AMC is well aware that “The Walking Dead” fervor is not going to last forever so they’re trying some new things, including “The Terror.” Deadline is reporting that Edward Ashley (In the Heart of the Sea), Liam Garrigan (“Once Upon a Time”), and Ronan Raftery (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) have signed on for recurring roles in AMC’s anthology drama series, based on the bestselling 2007 novel by Dan Simmons.

Written by feature writer David Kajganich, who co-showruns with Soo Hugh, the series is set in 1847, when a Royal Navy expedition crew searching for the Northwest Passage is attacked by a mysterious predator that stalks the ships and their crews in a suspenseful and desperate game of survival. It is a fictionalized account of Captain Sir John Franklin’s lost expedition of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror. Ashley and Garrigan will play stewards aboard the HMS Terror, and Raftery will play a Lieutenant on the HMS Terror.

One of the great things about “The Walking Dead” is all the tribute zombies that Greg Nicotero fills the show with. For Season 7 he’s bringing the ultimate one to the forefront (well, I say “ultimate” because it’s my favorite of all time)!

Nicotero posted the following video on Instagram, which shows off the new Dr. Tongue, who made his first appearance in George A. Romero’s Day of the Dead.

Resident Evil Filmmakers Set Sights on Monster Hunter

With the Resident Evil film franchise finally coming to an end, Deadline is reporting that Paul W.S Anderson and his Impact Pictures producing partner Jeremy Bolt aren’t done with Capcom yet as they’ve set their sights on another of the company’s gaming franchises.

Manager Ken Kamins has begun taking meetings with the filmmakers on Monster Hunter, a wildly popular video game IP from Capcom, the Japanese video game maker that developed and distributes Resident Evil. Anderson has written the first film’s script, and they come armed with still and VFX visual renderings of the creatures and a detailed game plan that will include a partnership with Dennis Berardi. He’s the co-founder and president of Toronto-based VFX house Mr. X that helped enable Anderson and Bolt to bring in the Resident Evil series for reasonable net budget in the $50-plus million range for each of the final 3D pictures. Monster Hunter will cost a similar amount.

The logline: For every Monster, there is a Hero. An ordinary man in a dead end job discovers that he is actually the descendant of an ancient hero. He must travel to a mystical world to train to become a Monster Hunter before the mythical creatures from that world destroy ours.

A new UK poster has arrived for M. Night Shyamalan’s latest film, titled Split, and as always we’re right here with it. Dig it!

Split Release Details:
Writer/director/producer M. Night Shyamalan returns to the captivating grip of The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs with Split (review), an original thriller that delves into the mysterious recesses of one man’s fractured, gifted mind. Following last year’s breakout hit The Visit, Shyamalan reunites with producer Jason Blum (The Purge and Insidious series, The Gift) for the film, which Universal Pictures is releasing on January 20th.

While the mental divisions of those with dissociative identity disorder have long fascinated and eluded science, it is believed that some can also manifest unique physical attributes for each personality, a cognitive and physiological prism within a single being.

For Split, Shyamalan and Blum reassemble their core team from The Visit, the No. 1-grossing horror film of 2015. Their fellow collaborators include producer Marc Bienstock and executive producers Ashwin Rajan and Steven Schneider.

Synopsis:
Though Kevin (James McAvoy) has evidenced 23 personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher (Betty Buckley), there remains one still submerged who is set to materialize and dominate all the others. Compelled to abduct three teenage girls led by the willful, observant Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy), Kevin reaches a war for survival among all of those contained within him—as well as everyone around him—as the walls between his compartments shatter apart.

We’re all insanely excited for Shane Black’s The Predator to begin its theatrical hunt, and now we have even more fodder for our giddy cannon. Details for the film are being kept firmly under wraps. Look for The Predator in theaters on February 9, 2018.

In The Predator, which will be rated R, Olivia Munn is playing a scientist opposite Boyd Holbrook’s Special Forces commando. That’s about all we know thus far other than the proposed release date.

Black is directing from a script by Fred Dekker. John Davis, Joel Silver, and Lawrence Gordon — who produced the original — are producing.

Mortal Kombat Finds a Director

The upcoming James Wan-produced Mortal Kombat film has found a director! Variety is reporting that Simon McQuoid, best known for directing commercials, is in talks to helm the reboot for New Line.

Wan is producing the movie along with Michael Clear for Atomic Monster and Todd Garner and Jeremy Stein through their Broken Road banner. Lawrence Kasanoff is executive producing. Greg Russo penned the most recent draft.

Based on the classic ’90s arcade game, Mortal Kombat has generated numerous pop culture properties, including the best-selling video game Mortal Kombat X. The Mortal Kombat games are developed by NetherRealm Studios, owned by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, with a team led by co-creator and creative director Ed Boon.

Paul W.S. Anderson’s 1995 Mortal Kombat movie revolved around some of the game’s classic characters, like Liu Kang and Johnny Cage, who were invited to a tournament on a mysterious island only to find out that the fate of the world hung in the balance. That film grossed $70 million at the domestic box office.

Its sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, however, did not bring back audiences; and the studio shelved future plans for any Mortal Kombat-related projects. The series was revived after Warner Bros. Digital, which was run by current Warner Bros. chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara at the time, premiered the web series “Mortal Kombat: Legacy.”

Strangers Sequel Remains in Limbo

Talk of a sequel to Bryan Bertino’s The Strangers has been happening since the movie came out years and years ago. Sadly it remains just that, talk. Even worse, it’s probably going to stay that way for a while.

Rue Morgue caught up with Bertino’s frequent collaborator producer Adrienne Biddle for the status of The Strangers 2.

Bryan and I and our company are not attached to the project at this point. He wrote the original script, which I will say is a fantastic piece of writing, but he was never going to direct it, and it’s in Relativity Media’s hands following the sale of Rogue to Relativity. With all the troubles they’ve had, I don’t know if it’s going to happen. If they can get their financial act together, maybe, but it has almost happened two or three or four times over the last five or six years, so I’ll believe it when it see it.

Yep, not exactly a glowing forecast.

Photographs Taken of Possible Mothman in The Gasp Menagerie

The Mothman is my favorite cryptid.  After a lifetime of studying cryptozoology, the mythology and lore surrounding Mothman just captures me like no other.  Sasquatch is fascinating, Nessie was an obsession for years, but Mothman…an omen of death?  The bridge collapse?  Indrid Cold???  AH!  So much awesome.

It’s been awhile, but we now have some photos of what some believe to be the Mothman, near his most infamous home of Point Pleasant, WV.  The best and clearest one can be found below:

The Mothman?

The Mothman?

These photos were posted online by a man in the area who seems to be trying to avoid publicity.  They show a winged creature of some sort that appears to have legs trailing behind it as it moves between two trees.

There are birds native to North America that trail feathers similar to this, and it’s also possible this is an owl with prey (a large frog/toad or even a snake that it’s gripping in the middle) but without further detail, it’s hard to say.

Is this the legendary Mothman, returned to his home near Point Pleasant?  Will there be a disaster, as Mothman is said to portend?  Is this just an interesting shot of local wildlife that appears to be something more than it is?

Explore The Gasp Menagerie!

Have a weird story? Potential evidence of the supernatural, or at least something hard to explain? Spot any creepy critters out there roaming the wilds? LET ME KNOW! I’d love to talk about it and possibly write it up right here in the Gasp Menagerie. You’ll get appropriate credit, of course, and everyone else will get fresh creepy (as opposed to fresh Creepy, which, trust me… nobody wants that) to enjoy. As always, I can be found at mrdark@dreadcentral.com. Now get out there, find some weird, and let’s get this party started.

Fear Itself (2016)

Fear ItselfStarring Amy E. Watson

Directed by Charlie Lyne

Fear Itself is billed as a documentary, but it’s being called a “film essay” on the festival circuit. (I caught it at the wonderful AFI Fest in Hollywood.) It’s hard to say what Fear Itself is exactly – or to whom it will appeal. It’s not informative enough for noobs, and it’s not deep enough for hardcore horror hounds.

As nearly 100 movie clips unfold over the 90-minute runtime, there’s a valium-induced monotone narration by a presumably fictional woman. She tells us that she stays in her room and watches horror films night after night. Her backstory is disclosed little by little as she talks about how the tension, dread, and fear evoked by the films she watches is nothing compared to… “the accident.” It’s a novel approach, but it doesn’t quite work.

First and foremost, the speaker sounds really, really sleepy. I think they were going for the hushed tones of a Gothic heroine (not unlike the narrator in Oz Perkins’ I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives in the House), but she sounds so drowsy that the drone of her words is too easily tuned out. Plus, they’re a bit pretentious. During a scene from Hitchcock’s The Birds, she whispers, “As long as fear’s still out there, sanctuary is a just sticking plaster, slowly peeling away.” About halfway through the doc… excuse me, film essay, I had lost the subplot entirely.

Director (and Guardian columnist) Charlie Lyne chose some worthy movie clips, but I don’t think they flowed together very well. They aren’t in chronological order, nor do they seem to follow a logical succession in terms of subject matter. Lyne uses mostly dialogue-free scenes so as not to complete with the narration (and, I imagine, to avoid having to pay a severed arm and leg for the rights).

We see moments and glimpses from many different genres including slasher, supernatural, Giallo, and Gothic. Lyne chooses to focus on moments of suspense and apprehension of the unknown, cutting away just before the reveal. That’s a smart choice since the doc is called Fear Itself, and if there is a story, it’s about the feeling of dread leading up to the pain of death. There’s an understated, melancholic original score (by Jeremy Warmsley) which adds to the languid, liquid flow of the film.

While I cannot say Fear Itself is bad – I mean, it couldn’t be with all the memorable moments from a huge cross-section of horror cinema assembled for our viewing pleasure – it’s not good either. It isn’t the kind of doc that will entertain or enlighten. It’s basically a clip movie of the sort you’d put on in the background at a low-key Halloween party.

Released already in the UK, Fear Itself is heading our way via VOD soon.
