Exclusive Interview with the Legendary Roger Corman on Death Race 2050

Oh, how I love Roger Corman movies! The original Death Race 2000 is no exception – in fact, it’s one of my faves. I saw it way after the fact, but it zoomed into drive-ins and grindhouse theaters in 1975, and has only gotten better with age as we see how its perceptive potshots at politicians and the mindless masses hungry for entertainment have come to pass in more ways than one.

Produced by Corman and helmed by dark-comedy mastermind Paul Bartel, the revved up sci-fi satire’s cast was led to the finish line by David Carradine as Frankenstein, Mary Woronov, Roberta Collins, and a pre-fame Sylvester Stallone. Corman has taken the wheel of the franchise once again with Death Race 2050. I have interviewed Corman several times over the years, but not lately so it was my pleasure to sit and talk with the grand gentleman about the new movie, which will be released on Blu-ray combo pack, DVD, and digital HD on January 17, 2017.

“I think it’s the originality of the concept. You don’t often get something that is completely original” said Corman of the plot that has kept audiences interested for 42 years. “In the original Death Race 2000 it was a comedy/action film in which the drivers were driving trucks from New York to New Los Angeles in the year 2000. They were scored on how fast they could drive, how many cars they could knock off the road, and most importantly, how many pedestrians they could kill. That was such a startling concept that led to all kind of jokes, like, 20 points for the little old lady at the crosswalk!”

“Death Race deals with the concept of violence as entertainment, you can go back to the Roman gladiatorial games or bring up things like mixed martial arts, which are really violent, as well as boxing, pro football, and so forth. I think that’s been with us forever, so the concept is universal. With this update, I thought of bringing the spectators into the picture, rather than just being observers. Now when I came up with that idea I thought, ‘This is really good, but you can’t take it too seriously’ so it becomes something of a satirical, political comedy but above all, it’s a car race.”

As for this latest round of drivers and their inventive cars…

“The cars have all new designs to fit the characters. For instance, Frankenstein’s car has been re-designed for the 21st century, and so the other cars represent advances in technology too. For instance, one car is a self-driving car just like the ones being today in the real world. Another car is driven by one of my favorite characters, Tammy the Terrorist, who is the leader of a cult. In it, terror is a religion and her car flings various explosive devices at people as she’s driving along. Another car is driven by a rap singer and the speakers are built into the car so her music plays as she drives. So, the whole concept of the cars has been changed so that each one mirrors the personality of the driver.”

From the Press Release:
A delirious blend of high-octane action, razor-sharp political satire and full-throttle mayhem, Roger Corman’s Death Race 2050 arrives on Blu-ray™ combo pack, DVD and Digital HD January 17, 2017, from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. The highly anticipated reboot of the cult classic Death Race 2000, the Universal 1440 Entertainment original production straps viewers into the driver’s seat of the ultimate auto showdown, a blood-splattered no-holds-barred virtual-reality show that gleefully pits hardened road warriors against each other — and their audience. Exclusive bonus features reveal how filmmakers transformed the deadliest competition on wheels into a hair-raising, savagely funny game of life or death.

Legendary filmmaking icon, Roger Corman, is back with his most outrageous film yet in this sensational, action-packed and darkly humorous reboot of the original Death Race 2000! It’s the year 2050 and America is controlled by an all-powerful corporate government ruled by The Chairman (Malcolm McDowell). The masses have been brainwashed with violent virtual-reality entertainment. The event of the year is the Death Race, in which a motley crew of violent drivers compete in a cross-country road race, scoring points for shamelessly running people over and driving each other off the road. The reigning champion and fan favorite, Frankenstein (Manu Bennett), who’s half-man half-machine, wants to take the crown, but his rebel spy co-pilot threatens his legacy.

Produced by Roger Corman, the king of cult classics, Roger Corman’s Death Race 2050 stars Manu Bennett (The Hobbit) as Frankenstein and Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange) as the Chairman. The cast also features Burt Grinstead (“NCIS”), Marci Miller (Viper), Folake Olowofoyeku (The Beaver), Anessa Ramsey (Footloose), Yancy Butler (Hard Target) and Charlie Farrell (Cantar).

Honky Holocaust (2016)

Starring:

Maria Napatov, Alex E. Edwards, J-Kori Salmon, Lucas Fleming, LaNecia Edmonds

Synopsis:

When Kendra finds herself separated from the Family, she must rely on the same individuals that she and her Family were trained to hate and kill, and finds herself forced to face reality and reevaluate the decades of brainwashing that she had undergone, if only Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton could do likewise.

Paul Michael McAlarney’s Honky Holocaust is a gruesome, brilliant and hilarious grindhouse/exploitation film exploring racism’s complex effects on society and the individual. Introducing a multitude of characters, all from different positions and perspectives on the spectrum of ideologies and attitudes toward race, Honky Holocaust insists ruthlessly and without censoring any detail that a single seed of bigotry can destroy any society from within. In true exploitation fashion, the filmmakers do so by showing rather than implying the consequences. A great homage to classic Troma movies, Honky Holocaust may be the most controversial Tromasterpiece since Surf Nazis Must Die.

Taking strong and unabashed influence from a wide variety of classic exploitation films and filmmakers such as Sergio Leone, Lloyd Kaufman, Street Trash, Jack Hill, Rudy Ray Moore, Roger Corman, and of course Ruggero Deodato’s Cannibal Holocaust. Honky Holocaust takes the audience back to the 1960s where Charles Manson was building an army to wait out the Helter-Skelter race war and emerge from the Manson Family Bunker to conquer the world when the dust cleared. In reality, of course, Charles Manson’s plans were foiled fortunately, but in Honky Holocaust he sees them realized, and the film follows his daughter Kendra and the Manson Family out of the bunker and into the world above, 35 years after the murder of Sharon Tate. What Kendra Manson and her “Family Members” soon realize, however, is that their racist ideologies and prophecies were vastly inaccurate and toxic.

Rather than tackle racism in its infinite forms as an onlooker might perceive them, Honky Holocaust, takes the audience a step further, piercing into the minds of those affected by racism and those who possess the bigoted attitudes, and exposes the delusions, the self-fulfilling reactions, the fear, and the complacency that often fuels racist ideas even when facts contradict them to the core, all in an entertaining and thought provoking manner.

Home Alone Gets a Gory Makeover

Home Alone is a film that requires a huge amount of suspension of disbelief to genuinely enjoy. I mean, the two burgles get hit with everything from spikes to irons, but aside from some facial burn marks, there wasn’t a single drop of blood. Well, not anymore.

The Youtuber BitMassive decided the remedy the film’s lack of the red stuff by digitally adding in blood and gore into certain scenes, and it’s pretty spectacular. The credits begin to roll at the end of each clip, because the burglars ain’t gonna be getting up after being subjected to Kevin’s unflinching brutality. No wonder people are speculating that he grew up to be John Kramer from the Saw franchise.

Snare, The (2017)

$

Starring Eaoifa Forward, Dan Paton, Rachel Warren

Directed by C.A. Cooper

Directed by C.A. Cooper, The Snare is one of those pics that uses a relatively small expanse in which to flex its muscles – in this case, it’s a sense of entrapment, and eventually an overtaking by something malevolent. While the journey does take a while to bisect, the eventual haven at the end is fairly affecting.

The movie centers around a trio of friends: Alice (Forward), Lizzy (Warren) and Carl (Paton) for a little getaway inside of a partially furnished apartment that’s waiting to be sold by Lizzy’s father, who is a real estate agent. Unbeknownst to him, his darling little daughter and her duo of doleful pals have holed up in the flat in the hopes of riding out the weekend in a partying blitz. When they awake the next morning, it appears that their little secluded safe-space of revelry has inexplicably become locked down – all escapes and possible exit-routes shut off…and now do we wish someone would have sprung for a hotel room, ya cheap bastards? In any event, the three now find themselves in a heap of trouble (did I mention NO cell-service as well), and dissension becomes a detectable entity, but that’s not the only issue sharing space with the three.

Cooper takes the overwhelming fear of containment, piles on top a heaping dose of paranoia, and mixes the concoction with a triumvirate of combustible characters that each have their own distinctive deteriorations. Lizzy’s a caged sexual lioness, Carl’s got a wee-bit of a violent streak, and Alice…WHOA, don’t even get me started on this woman’s internal glitches. All added up, and this is one of those instances where cabin fever seems like a mild malady compared to what this trinity’s up against. While the premise is a bit derivative, the notion that impending misery is upon the participants is a fun one (sorry, I’m one that loves this kind of stuff). The main drawback to the film however is the amount of time that gets chewed up in order to get the tension building – I’m all for a good slow-burner, but this took just a bit TOO long on the simmer plate to really get cooking. However, it’s not a damning issue, and the film does have more than a few chilling scenes to combat the lagging tempo, thus making it a film that should be given at least a one-timer to see if you’ll feel the same way. Give it a spin on one of these cold winter nights, and let’s just see where horror will lead us in 2017 – so far, not so bad.

Top 5 Underrated Horror Video Games

$
0
0

When it comes to horror video games, you typically hear most about big names like Resident Evil and Dead Rising. The latter just had a big release last month, and the former is offering its newest entry this month. The games in these popular franchises are a few examples of horror games which get their due credit.

But over the years there have been some horror games which didn’t get a lot of attention. They’ve quickly been forgotten, due to either initial bad reviews or poor marketing. But if you ask me, these games are all quite fun and should have been given more of a chance.

So let’s take a look at five horror video games that are vastly underrated. Be sure to let me know in the comments if you agree with my list or if there are any good ones I forgot.

Obscure – Courtesy of DreamCatcher Interactive

5. Obscure

(PlayStation 2, Xbox, Windows)

Obscure is a 2005 survival horror video game which nobody seems to have ever heard of. Set in a high school, the plot centers on a group of five teenagers searching for their missing friend. They wind up locked in the school building overnight. With light-sensitive creatures closing in on them, the goal is to survive the night and escape.

A very interesting aspect of Obscure is its two-player cooperative mode. Rare at the time for a survival horror game, two players could take the monsters on together. This made for some very fun multiplayer experiences. Exploring the creepy, dark school with someone else added an extra layer of enjoyment to the game. Each character also has its own unique talents, so switching them out occasionally is encouraged.

Another unique part of this game is having permanent death for the characters. If one of the five teens died, they were gone for good. You would then have to play as another character to continue the game until either you win the game or all five are dead. This has since become more common in horror games, such as in the PS4 hit Until Dawn, but at the time there was nothing else like it.

Saw II: Flesh and Blood – Courtesy of Konami

4. Saw II: Flesh and Blood

(PlayStation 3, Xbox 360)

Did you realize that not only is there an official Saw video game, there’s even a sequel? It’s surprising how many horror fans aren’t aware of these games existing. But back in 2009, Konami released Saw: The Video Game, developed by Zombie Studios. It serves as a tie-in to the movies, taking place between the first and second films. You play as Danny Glover’s character, Detective David Tapp.

The first Saw game is decent enough, though it had a flawed combat system. Sometimes it seemed like you were fighting the controls more than anything else. But it was overall satisfying and felt like the potential was there for a new game franchise based on Saw.

Konami was hoping for that same thing and released Saw II: Flesh and Blood the very next year. This time players took on the role of Detective Tapp’s son, Michael, searching for the truth about what happened to his dad. The writing improved this time around, with a much more compelling story than the first game. Michael Tapp is actually a more interesting protagonist than many of the ones from the later films.

Also gone is the clunky combat system, replaced with something much easier to control. It’s like they were improving upon the promising premise of the original game. However, this sequel did not perform as well as the first game, and plans for future entries were scrapped. It’s too bad as I found this one to be a big improvement with potential for at least one more video game.

The Suffering – Courtesy of Midway

3. The Suffering

(PlayStation 2, Xbox, Windows)

Midway’s The Suffering isn’t a game you’re likely to hear mentioned anytime soon. The 2004 survival horror game has long been forgotten. But at the time it was such a unique game that it was unlike anything else. It even warranted its own sequel soon after, though it wasn’t quite as solid as this original title.

In the game you play as Torque, a convicted prisoner. You’re awaiting execution on Death Row for the murders of your ex-wife and two children. You believe you’re innocent, but you blacked out and have no memory of the event. Did you kill them? Or is something even more sinister happening? The game screws with your mind in this way from beginning to end with top-notch psychological horror.

While sitting on Death Row, horrific monsters suddenly descend upon the prison. While battling your own personal demons, you must also survive the real ones. You’ll encounter other terrified guards and inmates during your quest, but helping and/or killing them is entirely up to you. Be careful, though— it uses your moral choices to determine which powerful ending you’ll receive.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories – Courtesy of Konami

2. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories

(Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 2, PSP)

While they vary in quality, most of the Silent Hill games are all pretty similar. When looking at the series as a whole, it’s easy to pick the odd one out: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. Being so different has gotten it a lot of criticism, while simultaneously being the reason why I praise it. Initially released exclusively for the Wii, this new take on Silent Hill incorporated the Wiimote into the gameplay. It was a very interesting new way to experience the franchise.

The biggest difference with this title is the removal of any type of combat system. You cannot fight the monsters— all you can do is run and hide. For me this wasn’t a dealbreaker, as I typically ran more than I fought in the other games anyway. And it also added to the horror experience, as I felt even more helpless when the monsters would start coming after me.

This game features a reimagining of the original Silent Hill and is set in its own universe. It has an in-game psychologist ask you questions, using your answers to tailor the story to you. The writing is top-notch, and I might even say it’s the best of any Silent Hill game in the franchise. Although there are five possible endings, each one is devastatingly heartbreaking. No matter which one you get, tears are guaranteed.

Friday the 13th for NES – Courtesy of LJN/Nintendo

1. Friday the 13th

(Nintendo Entertainment System)

No, I’m not talking about the upcoming Friday the 13th game from Gun Media. That game is already getting tons of praise, despite not being out yet. And it’s well deserved. After personally beta-testing the game, I can confirm that the hype is real, and this game will be insanely good.

But the original Friday the 13th video game from 1989 has taken a lot of heat over the years. The Angry Video Game Nerd infamously rips it to shreds in one of his first videos. And admittedly, its difficulty level is pretty steep, which would turn off many players who try it.

Personally, however, I say this game doesn’t get due credit. It’s by far the scariest title on the NES. The eerie music alone is enough to make it frightening. And even if he is wearing a purple jumpsuit, Jason can still terrify you when he pops up from out of nowhere. There’s also a foreboding sense of dread as the sun slowly sets, gradually shifting from day to night— another unique aspect for an NES game. Taking on Jason does take a bit of a learning curve, but surviving each encounter with Jason feels like an accomplishment

At the time, the idea of permanent death in video games was unusual. But it’s a strong aspect of the Friday the 13th Nintendo game. You’re given six counselors to choose from at the start, with the ability of alternating between them. When one of them dies, though, they are dead. There’s nothing but a blank space where their picture used to be. And when all six die, the game literally tells you, “You and your friends are dead. Game over.”

Talk about the most depressing game over screen of all time.

I think that this game was simply too far ahead of its time. In fact, some of its elements are being used in the new game from Gun Media. This includes exploring cabins for items to use against Jason as well as choosing as different counselors to play as. It’s like the new game is an extremely advanced version of the NES classic. Even so, I’ll always have fond memories of purple-suited Jason scaring the daylights out of me when I was a kid. If its job was to be horrifying, it accomplished that.

The Walking Dead Season 7B Official Synopsis and New Images Released

We still have a month to wait until “The Walking Dead” returns for the second half of Season 7, but today we have a few items to help relieve the pain… the official synopsis for Season 7B and three new images. It looks like the Ricktator is indeed back!

Season 7B kicks off on Sunday, February 12, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. All of the below photos are courtesy of Gene Page/AMC.

“The Walking Dead” is executive produced by showrunner Scott M. Gimple, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Greg Nicotero, Dave Alpert, and Tom Luse.

Synopsis:
The first half of Season 7 saw Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the group broken by Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), forced to fall under his will and brutally convinced to live under his rules. The second half will focus on preparing for war and gathering the supplies and numbers to take Negan down once and for all.

Rick’s group will find out yet again that the world isn’t what they thought it was. It’s much bigger than anything they’ve seen so far. While they have a singular purpose – to defeat Negan – it won’t come easy. More importantly, victory will require more than Alexandria. They need the numbers of the Kingdom and the Hilltop, but, similar to how Rick felt, Ezekiel (Khary Payton) and Gregory (Xander Berkeley) do not want bloodshed. To convince them otherwise will take more than speeches. The lengths Rick and the group will have to go to in order to find weapons, food, and new fighters is nothing short of remarkable.

We’ll meet new survivors in incredible places. We’ll see Rick and the group tested in ways we’ve never seen before. We’ll see treachery from people we trust. Rick is confident as he will see his group and many others band together with the common goal of taking down Negan. But no amount of planning will prepare the group for all-out war with Negan and his army.

Hugh Dancy Not Done With Hannibal Yet…

Just weeks after interest was expressed in another season of “Hannibal” following the Silence of the Lambs arc, TVLine caught up with star Hugh Dancy to gauge his interest in another season and when he thinks it would happen.

My feeling is that, knock on wood, if it came around again, it wouldn’t be a bad thing for it to be four or five years later. That might actually be kind of interesting. How weird would that be, on a personal level, to find yourself back with those people? ‘So… where did we leave off?’ It’s such a strange idea, but it’s potentially very healthy for a story like that. So we’ll see.

Stay faithful, kids! If “Twin Peaks” can come back…

The Chucky action is in full swing, and right now we have the first behind-the-scenes images for you from the set of Cult of Chucky courtesy of Don Mancini and Fiona Dourif! Check ’em out!

Cult of Chucky

About Cult of Chucky:
Cult of Chucky, an all-new spellbinding chapter of the Child’s Play thriller franchise, began principal photography in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, on January 9, 2017. The seventh film in the blockbuster series will be released in a bone-chilling Unrated Version on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD in fall 2017 — just in time for Halloween. Packed with the franchise’s signature blend of horror and demented humor, Cult of Chucky is the latest production from Universal 1440 Entertainment, a production entity of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

“It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly 30 years since Chucky first terrified moviegoers in Child’s Play,” said Glenn Ross, General Manager and Executive Vice President, Universal 1440 Entertainment. “Since then the films have generated millions in worldwide box office revenue. Now Chucky’s back with more scores to settle in his trademark twisted style, and you can bet he won’t stop until he gets his revenge.”

Fiona Dourif (Curse of Chucky) returns as Nica, the wheelchair-bound heroine framed by Chucky for the bloody murders of her entire family. She’s joined by franchise veterans Alex Vincent (Child’s Play, Child’s Play 2) and Jennifer Tilly (Monsters, Inc., Bride of Chucky), with Brad Dourif (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) once again providing the eerie, unnerving voice of the demon doll possessed by the spirit of a maniacal serial killer.

Don Mancini, writer of the Child’s Play franchise, is the executive producer of the new film, which he also directs from his original script. Longtime franchise producer David Kirschner (The Pagemaster, Frailty) is joined this time by Ogden Gavanski (Warm Bodies, Immortals). The production team includes special-effects guru and associate producer Tony Gardner (Zombieland, Curse of Chucky), director of photography Michael Marshall (“Killjoys”), production designer Craig Sandells (Mother’s Day), and costume designer Patricia J. Henderson (ATM).

Synopsis:
Confined to an asylum for the criminally insane for the past four years, Nica Pierce (Fiona Dourif) is erroneously convinced that she, not Chucky, murdered her entire family. But when her psychiatrist introduces a new therapeutic “tool” to facilitate his patients’ group sessions — an all-too-familiar “Good Guy” doll with an innocently smiling face — a string of grisly deaths begins to plague the asylum, and Nica starts to wonder if maybe she isn’t crazy after all.

Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent), Chucky’s now grown-up nemesis from the original Child’s Play, races to Nica’s aid. But to save her, he’ll have to get past Tiffany (Oscar nominee Jennifer Tilly), Chucky’s long-ago bride, who will do anything, no matter how deadly or depraved, to help her beloved devil doll.

Our basic human need for normality is extremely strong, and I love to witness the struggle people are ready to go through just to maintain the status quo. This is the basis of my comedy.

Starcade Rises from the Grave!

Horror, gaming, and music go hand-in-hand, especially given the visceral experiences gaming has doled out over the years. We’ve come a long way since Pong.

That being said, in the 80s during the arcade heyday, gamers even had their own TV show in “Starcade,” and word has come that Shout! Factory is ready to resurrect this sliver of nostalgia for modern audiences!

From the Press Release:
Shout! Factory, a multi-platform media company, has acquired worldwide television format and ancillary rights to the classic TV game show “STARCADE” from JM Production Company and show creators James Caruso and Mavis E. Arthur. The agreement provides Shout! Factory the rights to develop and produce a reboot of the show for television, as well as production of additional projects for a global audience. Shout! Factory will executive produce these projects with JM Production Company, creators of the original game show. This announcement was made today by Shout! Factory’s founders Richard Foos, Bob Emmer, and Garson Foos and show creators James Caruso and Mavis E. Arthur.

“’STARCADE’ is a classic game show from the ‘80s and is pure nostalgic fun. We couldn’t be more excited to work with the original show creators to ‘retro-boot’ ‘STARCADE’ for a new generation of fans,” stated Shout! Factory’s founders. “As we continue to actively expand our reach into production and development for new series, movies, unscripted shows, and specials, this deal exemplifies the type of content we plan to pursue which taps into the interests and passions of our company’s loyal fanbase.”

Created by James Caruso and Mavis E. Arthur, “STARCADE” first aired in 1982 during the dawn of the video game era and is widely recognized as the first-ever video arcade game show, featuring great gamers competing against rivals playing the most popular games of the day in front of a live studio audience in order to win huge prizes. Alex Trebek hosted one of the first pilots for the show which was later picked up by Ted Turner to air on his then-fledgling cable station, WTBS; “STARCADE” went on to air more than 130 episodes over three seasons on Turner.

“I consider myself lucky to have been part of the first generation to grow up playing video games and watching ‘STARCADE’ in the 1980s,” said Shout! Factory’s Development Director, Jeremy Whitham. “Back then, no one could have predicted video games would one day become the world’s most popular form of entertainment. I can’t wait to see today’s crop of celebrities, pro gamers, and e-sports stars compete head-to-head and find out who is the top player on the planet.”

“We’re thrilled to be part of this ‘STARCADE’ revival,” said Jim Caruso and Mavis E. Arthur, producers of the original series. “We look forward to bringing the show back for all those avid Starcaders who have been waiting for years, as well as a new class of gaming heroes. Game on!”

The deal was negotiated by Shout’s Jeremy Whitham and James Caruso, the creator and executive producer of the original “STARCADE.”

Toy Fair 2017 isn’t happening until a couple of weeks from now in the UK and a month or so in the US, but the news has started to flow nevertheless… and today… it’s monkey news day. Rejoice!

You may recognize the name Lanard Toys as the folks who make those low-priced The Corps figures you see hanging around in Walmart. Now it seems they’ve nabbed the Kong: Skull Island license and are running with it.

This February will see the release of monster vs. human packs, a helicopter, an attack boat, and of course, a massive 18″ KONG!! More exciting, for me personally, is that the monsters look like they are right from The Mist… so… yeah… Mist action figure line. I’m gonna need 16 giant spiders… 12 flying dino birds…

It’s been a year since the passing of Angus Scrimm. Knowing Angus, he’d yell at us all for still being sad, but damn it, it’s for that very reason why this remains so hard for fans. The man was the salt of the Earth and a true genius and gentleman.

Gigi Bannister (wife of Reggie) took to her Facebook page to pay tribute to Angus and posted a host of behind-the scenes images. Check them all out here.

Gigi wrote, “On this day, we’re feeling melancholy. So photos we took on set behind the scenes of Phantasm 4 and Phantasm 5 are here. Reggie and I are missing Angus (Rory) Scrimm on this day – the first year of his passing. It is also the 3rd year my daughter Autumn Cerenil-Lee has been missing without word. So, let’s enjoy these moments and happy memories.

We all miss you, brother.

Ghosts in the Graveyard Debut New Music Video

The horror-themed band Ghosts in the Graveyard has released the music video for their song “Needs”, and it’s pretty damn freaky.

Ghosts in the Graveyard – Needs (Official Video)
Shot on location in Paris and Seattle, “Needs” is a modern day retelling of Dracula, shot in the style of gritty, VHS 80s Horror. We also invited friends and fans from all over to do “death cameos” in the video. These special appearances include our label owner Mike Wimer (VNV Nation, The Labrynth, Information Society), Sarah Stewart (The Labrynth, Ayria), and DanXIII (Horror journalist of the former Famous Monsters of Filmland).

From the Press Release:
A.D.S.R. MusicWerks has signed Seattle based Shock Rock/Darkwave band, Ghosts in the Graveyard. Their debut album, Monsters for the Masses, will be released October 2016.

The band was formed in June 2014 by Filmmaker/Musician Byron C. Miller (Lead singer/Lyricist), who previously served as Co-Frontman in God Module. Inspired by Horror, Cinema, Shock Rock, and Synth Pop, this project is equal parts horrific, fun, and soul bearing. Byron’s film collaborator and seasoned musician, Paul Morgan (Wiscon), immediately came on board as the music creator and live guitarist. Coming from a Metal and Punk background, Paul brought a much needed edge to the project. With her beautiful voice and classical training, Byron’s wife and collaborator, Shelly, joined the band contributing to the lyrics, vocals, and playing live keyboard. They’ve played a number of theatrical shows and plan to do a mini-tour to go along with the album release. You can see them next performing at LoFi Seattle for Bat City Production’s Anti-Block Party.

MusicWerks President Michael Wimer, who also acted as Mixer on the album had this to say, “Ghosts in the Graveyard has struck a chord with their awesome debut album. This record shows some great depth and talent in song writing, while at the same time reminding me of how much fun I had trick-or-treating as a kid on Halloween! Well played!”

On signing with MusicWerks, the band commented, “We are happy to join the MusicWerks family and to be on the same roster as previous releases The Labrynth, Cylab, SMP, Noxious Emotion, Gliss, and Fokewolf.”

See an Exclusive Sneak Peek of Ghosts in the Hood Episode 1.02 – Menace 2 South Central

Last week WE tv debuted the new paranormal docu-series “Ghosts in the Hood,” and I have to say those of us here at DC who watched it had a great time and are looking forward to tomorrow night’s Episode 1.02, “Menace 2 South Central.”  If you are, too, here’s an exclusive clip to further whet your appetites.

About “Ghosts in the Hood”:
WE tv’s new paranormal docu-series “Ghosts in the Hood” blends humor with the supernatural and follows a group of diverse ghost hunters as they investigate unexplained phenomena across Los Angeles. The show follows the ghost-hunting team of O.P.O. (Official Paranormal Operations), who go where other ghost hunters typically don’t – from the LBC to Altadena – bringing their signature humor along with them. WE tv has produced six hour-long episodes of the series.

In each episode O.P.O. responds to two different clients in distress. Whether they live in a haunted home or run a business plagued by spirits, O.P.O. has a strong track record of resolving unexplained issues for their clients, by either proving or disproving that something paranormal is plaguing them.

“Ghosts in the Hood” is produced for WE tv by Gurney Productions and executive produced by Scott Gurney and Deirdre Gurney. Mike Odair and Todd Hurvitz also executive produce. In-house executive producers for WE tv are Lauren Gellert, David Stefanou, and Sitarah Pendelton-Eaglin.

“Ghosts in the Hood” Episode 1.02 – “Menace 2 South Central” (1/12/17; 10pm ET/PT)
Defecio and his team of ghost hunters are called in to investigate a haunted piñata house. Suspicions quickly turn to fact when the team’s medium, Jasmine, extracts answers from the spirit of a murdered child!

After providing a twisted solution to the problem at hand, the O.P.O takes to Burbank, where a Family Fun Zone is growing frightened of an unexplained presence. After a long night of minimal progress, the team is suddenly struck with intense and unexpected symptoms, arriving at a literally “shocking” conclusion.

Meet O.P.O.:

  • Defecio Stoglin – The CEO of O.P.O., Defecio was compelled by his passion for the paranormal and founded and created Official Paranormal Operations to help out everyday people who are dealing problems of the supernatural kind. With his keen and eager eye for investigating, Defecio tries to bring peace of mind to his clients.
  • Jasmine Orpilla – A verified medium, Jasmine comes to speak to the departed spirits that inhabit the haunted sites investigated by O.P.O. Jasmine has been communicating with spirits for quite a number of years and as a result has honed and developed her contact skills to the other side.
  • Dave Purdy – The technical expert for O.P.O., Dave has a passion for all things technical and a knack for building his own gear. He builds and creates the gear used to collect evidence of paranormal activity for clients, and he is the lead on revealing the found evidence once the investigation is over. His love for the paranormal and talent for creating innovative technologies makes him the perfect tech expert for O.P.O.
  • Matty Richards – A family friend of Defecio from New York, Matty is also a budding comedian and actor, providing much needed comic relief for the group, as well as being O.P.O.’s resident scaredy cat. Although he has no previous ghost-hunting skills, he is currently learning the ins and outs to help O.P.O. any way he can.
  • Maunda Oyin – As the group’s chief researcher, Maunda does anything she can to supply context for the frightening situations the crew is about to head into. Using her naturally inquisitive mind, Maunda digs into the history of every haunting, going to libraries, records offices, even traveling door-to-door in the neighborhoods where they’re investigating, to maximize O.P.O.’s chances of discovering information useful to their case.
