The UK Gets Prevenge With New Artwork

We told you about Prevenge back in December, and right now we have a brand new sliver of eye candy for you to ogle that’s ready to pop! Check it out!

Alice Lowe (Hot Fuzz, Kill List, Sightseers, The World’s End) directs and stars alongside Jo Hartley (Eddie the Eagle, This Is England), Dan Renton Skinner (High-Rise), Gemma Whelan (The Wolfman, “Game of Thrones”), Kayvan Novak (Four Lions, Paddington, Syriana), and Kate Dickie (The Witch, “Game of Thrones,” Prometheus).

Kaleidoscope Film Distribution has set a February 10th UK release for the flick.

Synopsis:
A pitch black, wryly British comedy from the mind of Alice Lowe, Prevenge follows Ruth, a pregnant woman on a killing spree. It’s her misanthropic unborn baby dictating Ruth’s actions, holding society responsible for the absence of a father. The child speaks to Ruth from the womb, coaching her to lure and ultimately kill her unsuspecting victims.

Struggling with her conscience, loneliness, and a strange strain of prepartum madness, Ruth must ultimately choose between redemption and destruction at the moment of motherhood.

Having shown at Venice, Toronto, and most recently the London International Film Festival, Prevenge marks the directorial debut from Lowe, who is a true triple threat, writing, directing, and acting in the film during her own real-life pregnancy.

Omen Star Sentenced for Road Rage! Never Cut Off the Antichrist!

Oh you little devil, you! Some interesting news coming out of the UK as The Guardian is reporting that the actor who played Damien Thorn in the 1970s horror film The Omen punched two cyclists in a road-rage attack and has been given a suspended prison sentence – on Friday the 13th.

Harvey Spencer Stephens, 46, lashed out at two riders and damaged one of their cycling helmets after getting out of his car after a dispute, a court heard. He pleaded guilty to two counts of ABH (actual bodily harm) and one of causing criminal damage following the attack on Toys Hill, Westerham, Kent, on 21 August last year.

Maidstone crown court heard that father-of-two Stephens was “red-faced and angry” when he confronted the cyclists, knocking one of them unconscious after driving up behind them.

They’re lucky they weren’t attacked by demonic dogs, or speared by spires. Could have been worse.

Psychomania and Takashi Miike’s Black Society Trilogy Join Arrow’s Winter 2017 Releases

We told you at the end of last year that Arrow Video is bringing Emiliano Rocha Minter’s insanity-laden We Are the Flesh to the U.S. in February, and now we’ve learned what other treats will be joining it this winter.

Read on for the details of Arrow/MVD’s release of both Psychomania (review) and Takashi Miike’s Black Society Trilogy as well as a reminder of what the We Are the Flesh (review) discs will include.

From the Press Release:
MVD Entertainment Group furthers the distribution of Arrow Video in the US with three new titles to kick off 2017…

January’s a great month for fans of Japanese crime cinema as Takashi Miike’s Black Society Trilogy arrives on both Blu-ray and DVD. These stylish and gripping crime films put Miike on the cinematic map and proved he was more than just a specialist in blood and guts. See the films that made Takashi Miike’s name as a master of Japanese crime cinema with this exciting set from Arrow Video. Including Shinjuku Triad Society, Rainy Dog and Ley Lines, in beautiful high definition transfers, the set also contains a host of special features including a brand new interview with the director himself.

Fresh from recent festival and filmmaker acclaim, We Are the Flesh debuts in the US on DVD and Blu-ray. We Are the Flesh is a Mexican arthouse head-trip which takes you on a nightmarish journey into a post-apocalyptic hell. Outrageous and explicit, it sees a brother and sister taken in by a strange hermit who uses them as he acts out his own depraved fantasies. The longer they stay, the more they find themselves slipping into the darkness, despite their better judgement. This bizarre slice of Mexican arthouse is one of the most unsettling film experiences you will ever have and an all-out psychedelic head-trip.

Last but not least, The United States gave motorcycle-mad cinemagoers Easy Rider, The Wild One, and The Wild Angels. The United Kingdom gave them Psychomania, the tale of zombie bikers run amok is southern England, coming to Dual Format DVD + Blu-ray on February 21. The Living Dead are a delinquent biker gang, fond of causing havoc on British roadways and making out in graveyards. Gang leader Tom (Nicky Henson) also has a Satanist for a mother, and when he discovers the secret of immortality, the name of his motley crew takes on a more literal meaning. Psychomania is a wonderfully offbeat gem, outlandish and eccentric in equal measure.

TAKASHI MIIKE’S BLACK SOCIETY TRILOGY on DVD and Blu-ray on January 24, 2017 (pre-order here)
After several years spent working almost exclusively in the direct-to-video world of “V-cinema” in Japan, Takashi Miike announced himself as a world-class filmmaking talent with this trio of thematically-connected, character-centric crime stories about violence, the underworld of Japanese society, families both real and surrogate, and the possibly hopeless task of finding one’s place in the world. His first films made specifically for theatrical release, and his first for a major studio, the “Black Society Trilogy” was the beginning of Miike’s mature career as a filmmaker, and they remain among the prolific director’s finest works.

Set in the bustling Kabuki-cho nightlife neighborhood of Tokyo, Shinjuku Triad Society follows a mixed-race cop (Kippei Shiina, Outrage) struggling with private issues while hunting a psychotic criminal (Tomorowo Taguchi, Tetsuo the Iron Man) who traffics in children’s organs. Rainy Dog, shot entirely in Taiwan, is about an exiled yakuza (Dead or Alive’s Show Aikawa) who finds himself saddled with a son he never knew he had and a price on his head after the Chinese gang he works for decides to turn on him. Ley Lines moves from the countryside to the city and back, as three Japanese youths of Chinese descent (including The Raid 2’s Kazuki Kitamura) seek their fortune in Tokyo, only to run afoul of a violent gang boss (Naoto Takenaka, The Happiness of the Katakuris).

Three of the most dramatically moving films created by the director, the “Black Society Trilogy” offers clear proof that Miike’s frequent pigeonholing as a specialist in bloody spectacle is only one aspect of his filmmaking career, and taken as a whole, the films are among the finest works ever to deal with the way violence and brutality can unexpectedly destroy even the most innocent of lives.

WE ARE THE FLESH on Blu-ray and DVD on February 14, 2017 (pre-order here)
A visionary and bizarre slice of Mexican art house cinema, We Are the Flesh is an extraordinary and unsettling film experience, a sexually charged and nightmarish journey into an otherworldy dimension of carnal desire and excess, as well as a powerful allegory on the corrupting power of human desire.

Acclaimed by the Oscar-winning Mexican directors of The Revenant and Gravity and playing to rave reviews and stunned audiences at genre film festivals around the world, We Are the Flesh is that rare beast – an intelligent, beautifully crafted arthouse film that is also provocative and deeply disturbing. Mixing the graphic, powerful imagery of Gaspar Noé’s Love and Enter the Void with the surreal, hallucinatory impact of Alejandro Jodorowsky and taking Mexican arthouse cannibal flick We Are What We Are to the next level, We Are the Flesh is a bizarre, psychedelic head trip, mixing intense, outrageously explicit imagery with a profound allegory on the nature of existence to make this is an unforgettable, boundary-pushing experience unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

Visionary, unrelenting, and certainly not for the prudish or faint-hearted, We Are the Flesh is an erotic inferno of the senses that manages to pack all manner of delirium into its short running time, including incest, necrophilia, and cannibalism. This is extreme art cinema at its boldest and most taboo-bustingly bizarre.

In the film a young brother and sister, roaming an apocalyptic city, take refuge in the dilapidated lair of a strange hermit. He puts them to work building a bizarre cavernous structure, where he acts out his insane and depraved fantasies. Trapped in this maddening womb-like world under his malign influence, they find themselves sinking into the realms of dark and forbidden behaviour.

Anna and the Apocalypse to Bring Musical Sensibilities to the Undead

With the success of La La Land you can expect to see more musicals in just about every genre you can think of… including horror which is already home to some fantastic ones like Repo! The Genetic Opera, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, et al. Now the first ever zombie musical is headed our way as Screen Daily is reporting that filming on the zombie comedy-musical Anna And The Apocalypse is underway in and around Glasgow, Scotland.

In the movie, a girl and her friends must fight – and sing – their way through a zombie invasion to reach the supposed safety of their school, not knowing if their parents and friends will still be alive when they get there.

Emerging UK actress Ella Hunt (pictured; Our Robot Overlords) stars in the title role alongside Mark Benton (ITV drama The Halcyon) who plays her father and Paul Kaye (“Game Of Thrones”), who plays the wicked antagonist Savage.

Ryan McHenry, who wrote and directed the 2010 short film Zombie Musical upon which it is based, wrote the original script and was due to direct the feature but the filmmaker died of cancer in 2015 aged 27. He was best known for creating viral hit Ryan Gosling Won’t Eat His Cereal.

Directing duties have now been taken on by John McPhail, director of 2016 rom-com Where Do We Go From Here. Writers are Alan MacDonald and McHenry.

Rounding out the ensemble cast are newcomers Malcolm Cumming, Sarah Swire, Christopher Leveaux, Ben Wiggins and Marli Siu.

Producers are Naysun Alae-Carew and Nicholas Crum of Blazing Griffin and Tracy Jarvis of Parkhouse Pictures. Executive producers are Tracy Brimm of Forward Films (Grabbers), Allan Niblo, Todd Brown, Mark Thomas and James Norrie.

Roddy Hart and Tommy Reilly composed the film’s music. Unit 3 Media and Creative Scotland provide finance. The film will shoot for five weeks.

AMP International, the sales company launched last week by former Salt executive James Norrie and Alliance Media Partners, is handling international rights. North America is repped by XYZ Films.

Meg Adaptation to Be Edge-of-Your-Seat Scary

Author Steve Alten recently sat down with our buddies over at iHorror to discuss what to expect from the upcoming big screen adaptation of Meg. Gotta say, we love what we hear so far.

Filming completed in New Zealand and China in mid-December,” Alten tells the site. “I have not seen any footage other than what has been posted on Instagram, but I understand everything looks amazing. It will be edge-of-your-seat scary. First and foremost, this is not just a shark; it’s a Megalodon, the most fearsome predator in the history of the planet… which just happens to be a prehistoric version of a 70-foot Great White.”

Warner Bros. Pictures and China’s Gravity Pictures said that the film will release during the 2018 Chinese New Year period in China. The week-long annual holidays kick off on Friday, February 16, in 2018, some two weeks ahead of the film’s previously announced March 2, 2018, outing in the rest of the world.

Jon Turteltaub (the National Treasure movies, Last Vegas) directs.

Meg is produced by di Bonaventura Pictures, Apelles Entertainment, Maeday Productions, Inc., and Flagship Entertainment, in association with Beijing Digital Impression (BDI) Film. Flagship is the Hong Kong-domiciled, Beijing-based production joint venture among Warner, China Media Capital, and Hong Kong’s Television Broadcasts (TVB.) Gravity Pictures is a China Media Capital subsidiary.

The story involves a deep-sea submersible attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct. The vessel lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific with its crew trapped inside. The screenplay is written by Dean Georgaris along with Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber, based on the New York Times best-selling book by Steve Alten.

In addition to Jason Statham and Li Bingbing, the cast includes Winston Chao,  Masi Oka, New Zealander Cliff Curtis, Rainn Wilson,  Ruby Rose,  Page Kennedy, Jessica McNamee,  Olafur Darri Olafsson,  Robert Taylor,  and Sophia Shuya Cai.

More as we get it!

Split, the latest film from M. Night Shyamalan, is heading to both the US and the UK on January 2oth; and to help both side of the pond get ready for it, a new featurette has arrived in which the writer/director and his star, James McAvoy, discuss the themes and variety of genres explored in the film and look into how McAvoy’s ever-changing character has been brought to life.

Split Release Details:
Writer/director/producer M. Night Shyamalan returns to the captivating grip of The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs with Split (review), an original thriller that delves into the mysterious recesses of one man’s fractured, gifted mind. Following last year’s breakout hit The Visit, Shyamalan reunites with producer Jason Blum (The Purge and Insidious series, The Gift) for the film, which Universal Pictures is releasing on January 20th.

While the mental divisions of those with dissociative identity disorder have long fascinated and eluded science, it is believed that some can also manifest unique physical attributes for each personality, a cognitive and physiological prism within a single being.

For Split, Shyamalan and Blum reassemble their core team from The Visit, the No. 1-grossing horror film of 2015. Their fellow collaborators include producer Marc Bienstock and executive producers Ashwin Rajan and Steven Schneider.

Synopsis:
Though Kevin (James McAvoy) has evidenced 23 personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher (Betty Buckley), there remains one still submerged who is set to materialize and dominate all the others. Compelled to abduct three teenage girls led by the willful, observant Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy), Kevin reaches a war for survival among all of those contained within him—as well as everyone around him—as the walls between his compartments shatter apart.

Having seen The Bye Bye Man (review), in theaters now, over the weekend, I can’t help but feel as if lots of people rode it unnecessarily hard. Is it a perfect movie? No. But its heart is definitely in the right spot, and it’s lots of fun at times.

Like it or not, the film over-performed this weekend at the box office, and that just may spell h-e-l-l-o to a sequel. I mean, it did for Ouija, and look how well that turned out!

In any event, according to Box Office Mojo, STX’s The Bye Bye Man came in with a fifth place finish as it took advantage of its Friday the 13th release date. The PG-13 chiller outperformed expectations, delivering an estimated $13.38 million over the weekend and is expected to top $15 million for the four-day MLK holiday, which would more than double the film’s $7.4 million production budget.

Internationally the film debuted in eleven markets and brought in an estimated $1.3 million, including a seventh place opening in the UK with an estimated $700k. The film will debut in Brazil on February 9 followed by releases in Mexico (March 17), Italy (April 19), Germany (April 20), and Spain (May 5).

Did you see the flick? Tell us what you thought below after digging this neat lil viral video that was just released…

Tomie: Complete Deluxe Edition (Manga)

Written by Junji ItoTomie

Illustrated by Junji Ito

Published by VIZ Media

Suitable for ages 16+

Fans of horror manga will always recognize the name Junji Ito. Subsequently, his titles Uzumaki and Gyo are also memorable. There’s one other name though that equally resounds with dread, Tomie. Perhaps one of Junji Ito’s most unforgettable characters, Tomie is an immortal young woman that lives solely to terrorize humanity. VIZ Media recently re-released Tomie in its entirety in a hardcover deluxe edition. A hefty volume to say the least, it compiles all of Ito’s tales of the beautiful Tomie in a single tome.

Who or what is Tomie? Is she a demon? A succubus? A zombie? Whatever you want to call her, she’s not your average immortal.

Every tale in Tomie tends to follow a similar format. Tomie takes an interest in someone, they fall for her, and eventually they try (and usually succeed) to brutally murder her. In some of these stories you almost feel bad for Tomie. What sort of existence is it—immortal or no—if it means you’ll be killed in the most devilish ways possible. If living forever means suffering at the hands of those you thought loved you, is it worth living? For Tomie, it certainly is. While Tomie is often about betrayal, it’s also about a ruthless young woman who only cares about herself. Some iterations of Tomie are gold diggers. In one instance she has an elderly couple adopt her, has them both killed, and then inherits their fortune. Another chapter in Tomie has her bewitching a young boy, teaching him to call her mother, only to leave him utterly broken in the end. If the titular character is nothing else, she’s brutal. Humans are dust in the wind to Tomie. She’ll have her fun and leave us to die. Tomie is a series of stories that’ll leave you happy you’ll never meet her.

As for the organization of said narratives within Tomie, they seem fairly random for the most part. The exceptions are the first and last stories, which work as bookends. The first chapter feels like an origin story, slowly revealing Tomie’s true nature. The last chapter almost functions as a permanent death for Tomie. You’ll have to read the tale to learn exactly what that means. Past these two specific chapters, the others mostly read as standalone stories. There is at least one character that pops up multiple times. He brings a few different chapters together as one. But for the most part, be prepared to cycle through a myriad of different characters that you’ll never see again.

If there’s anything negative to be said about Tomie it is that it is an anthology. While there’s absolutely nothing inherently wrong with anthologies, it’s just important to mention. For someone picking up Tomie blindly off a shelf, there’s not really anything that indicates it as an anthology from the get-go. For fans of short story collections, anthologies, or Junji Ito’s work in general, this won’t be an issue.

One important factor in Tomie that we haven’t mentioned yet is of course the artwork. Junji Ito’s work is considered much different than any other manga artists out there. This is visible in Tomie for sure. Ito utilizes dark tones and solid blacks masterfully. While manga is typically a black and white medium to begin with, Tomie uses much more black than white. The lines in the artwork are slightly thicker, and the backgrounds are usually pitch black or full of shadows. One chapter in particular shows Tomie in a beach setting. This would typically be bright and shining due to the sunny nature of ocean beaches. However, in Tomie, even the beach looks as dark and dreadful as death. Another memorable part of Ito’s work is the visual interest and uniqueness of his character’s expressions. Even though it’s a 2D medium, the emotions on characters’ faces feel three dimensional. Their sorrow, their horror, it all reads like a black and white film. Tomie is worth the read for the artwork alone.

For tales of desperation and horror, you generally can’t go wrong with anything produced by Junji Ito. The same is true of Tomie: Complete Deluxe Edition. If you want a high quality hardcover manga to add to your collection, it’s worth the buy. The artwork within Tomie is as dark and grim as the narratives. When you’re glad you never have to worry about meeting a character in a horror story, you know it’s affected you correctly. It’s good to be aware that Tomie is a collection of mostly unrelated plots. However, that shouldn’t stop anyone from enjoying it. Tomie is a character for the ages, a terrifying specter that will stick with you long after her many, many deaths.

Never Open the DoorDirected by Vito Trabucco

Staring Jessica Sonneborn, Deborah Venegas, Matthew Aidan, Kristina Page, Mike Wood, and George Troester

Produced by Maltauro Entertainment and Baumant Entertainment

Not Rated

Happy January, everyone! The Yule log is now ash, the new year rung in, the family returned to their homes, and the novelty gifts returned to the outlet store. Now that the Oscar season is over, it’s time for Hollywood to kick off the new year by dumping all of their trash into theaters (check out our review of The Bye Bye Man here!). Other than a few video games to review, it leaves me with basically nothing important to do. Which is nice, since my review backlog is now a five page long Google doc. So let’s kick off the slow season with a film I was supposed to review in December, Never Open the Door!

Here’s a fun experiment: think of the worst episode of The Twilight Zone. My money’s on “Five Characters in Search of an Exit.” Now ask yourself, where did it go wrong? Is its message just horribly dated? Twist underwhelming? Whatever it is, pick out that worst element. Now, imagine that the entire episode was that bad. Then smatter in some uncomfortable dick jokes, and you’ll have some approximation of Never Open the Door.

The film wears its inspiration on its sleeve, literally. It actually says on the back sleeve that it was inspired by The Twilight Zone. If what they got from the show was that it was in black and white, then spot on. I will admit that the opening title crawl was pretty good. They go for a classic diorama look, with crafted figurines dangling from strings. Another borderline high point is the soundtrack, which gets credit for feeling authentic. It pairs well with the visuals for about 10 minutes, then never cuts out. After 30 minutes I was wondering if the audio editor got paid by the note. Aside from that, nothing in this film comes close to the material that it’s attempting to replicate.

It’s not five minutes into the film that I had to pause. The premise is simple: six friends are enjoying a Thanksgiving dinner together in the nebulous year of “black and white film but with cell phones.” Everyone is establishing their character through some quippy banter. We have horny slacker friend, straight laced husband, pregnant sensitive wife, vaguely single sexy female, and filler couple. The camera distractingly darts from individual close ups to a wide shot of the whole table, because cinematography is super hard. During these wide shots, I noticed a bizarre seventh voice delivering lines way too close to the microphone. I had to stop, turn on the subtitles, and realized that these were supposed to be lines our main cast was delivering. Holy ADR, Batman! Could they just not get the cast back to record some lines? Did they wrap filming and send everyone home without asking for their contact info?

Honestly, I could have done without knowing who was saying what. By the time one of the dudes tried to whip his dick out at the dinner table to convince sexy single friend to suck it, I tuned out. If not for my girlfriend over my shoulder repeatedly asking, “wait, did that just really happen?” I would have slipped into a coma. I kind of resent her for making me conscious of what was happening to me.

The intrigue starts well enough, with a mysterious stranger knocking on the door, vomiting blood, and collapsing. His final words are, “NEVER OPEN THE DOOR!” Bizarre things begin to happen quickly thereafter. A strange demonic voice demands to be let in. Sexy friend, covered in the blood vomit, transforms into demonic sexy friend. A copy of sexy friend appears, oblivious to the events of the night so far. She insists she just got there. Unsure of what to do, they tie her up and search for demonic sexy friend. All right, interesting enough premise.

The film then proceeds to go absolutely fucking nowhere. Things just keep happening in this movie with no rhyme or reason. At various times the women in the group hallucinate demonic sexy friend trying to make moves on them. Other times she shows up just long enough to stab someone with her nails. Is she real? Is she a hallucination? Who the fuck knows! There are some mysterious men in suits outside staring ominously, and what do they do? If you guessed absolutely nothing, you win!

Never Open the Door establishes the various character paths early on, which all go swimmingly. Straight laced husband becomes paranoid that pregnant wife is cheating on him. Horny slacker friend is generally suspicious and self serving. Filler couple does things to push the plot along. And pregnant wife is sensitive about things. They all do things in line with fulfilling their character objective, and the movie ends. Why any of this is happening, what modicum of sense it makes, is never explained.

It’s a film so bad that you pick through the credits to find the overlap. Oh, you directed and wrote the movie Vito Trabucco? Shocking. Your name is only in the credits about three dozen times. I want to play a matching game with the cast, where you pair the actor with whom in the production staff they are friends with. If you want to cast your friends and loved ones in a movie, whatever, just make a good film.

I have no idea what they were trying to do with Never Open the Door. If they were trying to make a The Twilight Zone-esque film, they failed. I can respect trying to use a classic style, but other than being black and white there was no relation. They could have at least made it a period piece, but then I guess they couldn’t have the evil text message subplot. Be my guest and watch it ironically if you want.

As for the special features, there were a couple interviews that did nothing to illuminate just what the movie was about. If you want to watch Vito Trabucco explain how he made a movie once, and wanted to do it again, then your very specific wish has been granted. There’s nothing fun here, so don’t bother.

A new literary series kicked off today with The Seventh Age: Dawn, and we hear it’s the perfect addition to reading lists for fans of the Underworld and Divergent franchises.

This first installment in Rick Heinz’s sprawling Chicagoan urban fantasy epic, which is published by Inkshares, explores the consequences of bringing ancient magic into the contemporary world… will it mean untold wonders, or will it unleash hell on earth?

G. Derek Adams, author of Asteroid Made of Dragons, calls the book “unrelenting, unfiltered urban fantasy with a two-pack-a-day habit. Heinz has crammed more supernatural spectacle per square inch than is probably legal.

Sound up your alley? Below is the official synopsis along with the book’s cover artwork. You can order The Seventh Age: Dawn now from Amazon and all the usual outlets.

Synopsis:
Mike Auburn dangles above the city of Chicago from the beams of a half-built skyscraper. He is seconds from plummeting towards the circuit board of buildings and streetlights below, but oblivion is not what he seeks―it’s the dead.

Obsessed with discovering evidence of the afterlife, Mike’s death-defying stunts have brought him closer than ever to lifting the veil of reality, always just out of reach. However, his ventures to the edge have not gone unnoticed, and a mysterious organization by the name “O’Neill” seeks to recruit him to their own cause: preparing the city for impending Ragnarok, the end of the world as they know it.

Before long, a world ruled by scientific method and rational thinking is challenged by the supernatural―luring the dead, the damned, and the demons that have long awaited the return of magic, and they will stop at nothing to bring it back for good. Suddenly, Mike is at the center of a battle between the forces of reason, of good, of evil… and everything in between.

Death Race 2050 (Blu-ray / DVD)

Death Race 2050Starring Manu Bennett, Malcolm McDowell, Marci Miller

Directed by G.J. Echternkamp

Distributed by Universal Studios Home Entertainment

Full disclosure: I love Roger Corman movies. The original Death Race 2000 (based on Ib Melchior’s short story “The Racer”) is no exception. It zoomed into drive-ins and grindhouse theaters in 1975, and has only gotten better with age as we see how its savvy and amazingly perceptive potshots at politicians and the mindless masses hungry for entertainment have come to pass in more ways than one. Produced by Corman and helmed by dark-comedy mastermind Paul Bartel, the revved up sci-fi satire’s cast was led to the finish line by David Carradine as Frankenstein, Mary Woronov, Roberta Collins, and a pre-fame Sylvester Stallone.

In 2008 a remake of sorts came out “in association with Roger Corman.” It was produced, written and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, who said that he thought of his film as something of a prequel. It didn’t have the same sense of goofy fun as the classic. In Death Race, the vehicles were made for manslaughter, each one outfitted with machine guns, missile launchers, napalm sprayers, and even hubcaps that killed. Drivers in the internet-aired death race — oh, yeah. Plot: Jason Statham played a wrongly-accused convict in the not-too-distant future, who was forced to drive in the potentially fatal car race in order to clear his name — went through windshields, got run over, burnt to cinders, were shot full of holes, or otherwise eviscerated, slammed, crushed, spindled and mutilated. They was plenty of bloody action, but it was joyless.

Corman has taken the wheel of the franchise once again. It’s fun to see him revisit such a cool premise after spending so many years churning out Syfy Channel monster mashes like Piranhaconda, Sharktopus Vs. Pteracuda, and Dinocroc Vs. Supergator, to name a few. Death Race 2050 is at least a partial return to form. Death Race 2050 stars the always-magnetic Malcolm McDowell as The Chairman – an eerily Trump-like character – and manly Manu Bennett from “Spartacus” as superstar speedster Frankenstein. Marci Miller is excellent as his beautiful and mysterious copilot Annie Sullivan. The other racers competing run the gamut from so-so to super, but the standout is Folake Olowofoyeku as Minerva – looking at her credits, I see that she’s played mostly bit-parts in network TV series and I’m doubly impressed. She practically steals the show.

No, you cannot keep lightning in a bottle and nobody can recapture the sleazy fun of the mid-1970s cinematic tongue-in-cheek chutzpah, but I am happy to report that Death Race 2050’s writer-director G.J. Echternkamp makes a great stand. I’ve been a fan of Echternkamp’s work ever since the incredible documentary about his parents Frank and Cindy came out in 2007, so I was glad to see him teaming up with a cult-classic champ like Corman and doing so well with something that’s so different from his previous work. He also edited Death Race 2050, which is no simple feat – not only are there thousands of cuts but there’s also awesome use of old-school split-screening and other vintage visual techniques.

The gore is courtesy of computer – there’s a lot of CG, which is apropos considering the fact there’s a major VR subplot in the film. The result is dodgy at best, but you can’t expect Weta Digital quality on a Corman budget. It just adds to the cheese-factor, and so for me it’s fine. Some viewers may think there’s not enough blood and guts, while others might find the constant barrage of beheadings and body bisections a bit much. It’s a matter of personal taste.

Overall I think if you’re a fan of the original 1975 movie, you will appreciate the gung-ho spirit with which Death Race 2050 is presented.

Special Features:

  • The Making of 2050 – This featurette goes behind the scenes of Roger Corman’s Death Race 2050 to explore why, over four decades later, the original Death Race 2000 has been remade, including what made this project appealing to cast and crew, what changes have been made, and what fans of the original will still love. Discover the movie magic behind the deaths, stunts and of course — the cars! Includes interviews with stars, director G.J. Echternkamp and Corman himself.
  • Cars! Cars! Cars! – Go on the set with the drivers of Death Race 2050 as they introduce their one-of-a-kind killing machines: Frankenstein and his Monster, Perfectus and his Piece of Art, Tammy and the Tank, Minerva and her Sound Box and ABE.
  • The Look of 2050 – An insider look at how the film’s visual style came together, including how shooting in Peru helped set the tone of the picture and how the costumes became stars in and of themselves.

It’s a good movie release week for those of us in the Northeast who would prefer to stay indoors where it’s warm and watch zombies ripping humanity apart, children possessed or a psycho with a drill on the end of his guitar slaying scantily clad women. As a matter of fact, if those are your things, this will be just your week.

Starting with the zombies, every Resident Evil movie is going to be getting a Blu-ray release this week. I might be wrong, but this could just be some great marketing as the newest movie in the series will be hitting theaters on January 27th.  Also in the zombie category is the long-awaited US release of Train to Busan.

Next up: possessions. This week sees not only the Blu-ray release of Ouija: Origin Of Evil, but a 2-movie collection with the original Ouija will be on Blu-ray as well.

Lastly, barely dressed women and a rocker with a huge drill. If you haven’t guessed by now, I am referring to the Blu-ray double feature for Slumber Party Massacre II and Slumber Party Massacre III. Those are two of the classics dropping this week.

The other classics we have coming at you include 1966’s Revenge of the Blood Beast (aka The She Beast) on Blu-ray. Also on our classics list is 1977’s Love Letters of a Portuguese Nun, also on Blu-ray.

There are a bunch of other promising titles this week so be sure to read below. As always, pleasant viewing.

Based on the comic book series of the same name, Bubba boasts a deft merging of practical special effects and CG visual flourishes. Bubba himself is brought to life by the ground-breaking makeup design of Michael Davy, resulting in a fun-loving werewolf with an unprecedented range of comedic facial expressions.
