Writer Eric Heisserer Talks Making Van Helsing Scary Again

Our buddies over at Collider recently caught up with Oscar nominated writer Eric Heisserer (Arrival) to get the scoop on what’s in store for the reboot of Van Helsing he’s writing with Jon Spaihts.

Well I guess the biggest thing that’s already been said is it’s contemporary, it’s a modern-day reimagining,” Heisserer told the site. “I can talk about my emotional state of what I’ve been passionate about or sometimes frustrated by are the number of films where we find an extraordinary character with superhuman abilities that becomes a hero to solve a problem that a normal person cannot solve. And I was eager to try and buck that trend and showcase someone who had no extraordinary powers, just resourcefulness and will and kind of a stubbornness who’s able to tackle some of these bigger problems. Because I don’t like the idea that we’re infusing our public and our pop culture with the idea that only super people can solve the world’s problems. I like the idea of the everyday hero stepping up to the plate and getting things fixed. I don’t know what it’s going to look like at the end of the process, so I’m gonna withhold on commenting on really where it lands. I can say that my intent stepping in was to make it as scary as possible, partly because I know how to do that, and also because when you’re the only human surrounded by a bunch of supernatural creatures, that’s gotta be absolutely unnerving.

The next classic franchise Universal will be launching in its newly resurrected monsters universe is The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe. Directed by Alex Kurtzman, it is set to hit theaters June 9, 2017. All the films in the interconnecting UMCU are being overseen by Kurtzman (Star Trek) and Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious).

How Bates Motel Proved Me Wrong and Why You Should Be Watching

$
0
0

I first heard of “Bates Motel” back in 2012, around the time it was ordered to series by its parent network A&E. I can honestly say my reaction was nothing short of dismissive. A TV prequel to one of the greatest horror films ever made, Psycho? “A terrible idea,” I said. A serialized show detailing the formative years of Norman Bates, played so iconically by Anthony Perkins? “It’ll never work,” said I.

Yet, here we are staring down the barrel of the show’s fifth and final season (it kicks off tonight), heading well and truly into Psycho territory, and I have absolutely no reservations in proclaiming, “I was wrong.” Not just “Well, it’s actually not that bad” wrong, but “This is a great show and one of the best horror stories on TV right now” wrong.

Bates Motel stars Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore

Over the course of the four seasons we’ve experienced thus far, the show has gone from strength to strength. Getting better with each passing season, “Bates Motel” has given us the downward spiral of Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) as some sort of operatic tragedy, played off against the complex relationship between Norman and his troubled mother, Norma Bates (Vera Farmiga).

In order to stretch this across so many hours of TV, we have had numerous subplots and side characters, some of which have been more successful than others. But that’s fine because they have always worked towards fleshing out both the characters and the world of “Bates Motel,” making Norman’s tale resonate even more once the big story points are reached.

Another reason the extended canvas has worked is the effective setting of White Pine Bay, a “Twin Peaks”-esque small town of diners, drug deals gone bad, town meetings, and an endless supply of barely hidden secrets. The impact of the infamous Bates house and its accompanying motel goes without saying.

One particularly successful example of “Bates Motel” and its larger world is the character of Sheriff Alex Romero (Nestor Carbonell). He went from possible adversary to the Bates family to uneasy ally until finally falling in love with Norma just before her untimely death. This provides us with yet another three-dimensional character to be invested in aside from Norman and his mother and adds a further layer of complexity surrounding the issue of her death and the ongoing fallout from that in Season 5.

The true power of “Bates Motel,” however, lies with that core relationship of Norman and Norma Bates, particularly through two incredible performances by Freddie Highmore and a justly rewarded Vera Farmiga. She elevates every scene she’s in, chewing scenery in the best possible way to create a character who is so many things: sympathetic, frightening, strong, vulnerable, funny, manipulative. I could go on.

Highmore had perhaps the toughest job, taking on one of cinema’s most iconic characters. But he’s proven himself to be more than up to the task, providing that same nervous energy Perkins did nearly 50 years ago. Perhaps even more successfully than Perkins, Highmore replicates the balancing act of being able to illicit both sympathy and fear from the audience.

Watching Norman’s awkward social interactions followed by an explosive outburst speaks to the true potential of this show being realised. With this Norman, because we’ve spent so much time with him and seen him on different levels, we are that much more conflicted when we see him strangling someone to death whilst wearing his mother’s gown, believing himself to be her.

Bates Motel stars Freddie Highmore as Norman Bates

That mother-son relationship has been compelling from the beginning, ranging from controlling, uncomfortable and unhealthy to loving, content, and profound. Often all at once. This culminated in the shocking climax of last year’s Season 4, the strongest run yet. Norman finally committed the act of matricide the show had been building towards all along, but by this point the boy and his mother had already become one and the same. They are together forever. It was stirring, epic television that took an already strong show to another level entirely.

“Bates Motel” is, amongst many other things, a horror show. There are some truly great moments of horror peppered throughout the seasons, not least the aforementioned final two episodes of Season 4. Watching Norman glue the eyelids of his mother’s corpse open so she can look at him is a personal favourite of mine.

Aside from this, “Bates Motel” has painted itself predominantly as something else – a tragedy. In giving us the backstory of Norman and those around him, it has justified the very premise that evoked such ridicule from myself five years ago. As the final season brings the bigger picture together, combining Psycho’s fine horror with “Bates Motel’s” own tragic and profound spin, I salute a great piece of horror TV. Being wrong never felt so good.

Adam Green’s AriesScope Studios Flooded and Badly Damaged; How YOU Can Lend a Hand

$

For many years Adam Green and AriesScope Studios have been doling out the goods to horror fans everywhere. As a result of the heavy rains that have hit California, the place where all the magic happens has been badly damaged with some things lost forever.

From The AriesScope Website:
On Friday February 17th, Southern California was pummeled with the worst torrential rain the area has received in many, many years. Los Angeles was hit with flash floods, sink holes, and a massive path of destruction in which homes and vehicles were destroyed. In a few tragic cases lives were lost in the storm. While we are grateful to report that everyone in our family was unharmed by the severe weather, unfortunately we can’t say the same for our beloved studio. Our home.

The flooding was bad. Several items from our 19 years of filmmaking (so far) were destroyed while various props and creature displays from our films were damaged. Though some of the items were irreplaceable and are now just memories, the good news is that we have already begun the clean-up work, most all of our film’s props that were damaged will be refurbished and restored, and ArieScope Pictures will most certainly live to fight another day. However, your help is greatly needed now more than ever. Please consider buying something from our on-line store or donating to ArieScope/THE MOVIE CRYPT through our “Feed Arwen A Treat” option located in our “BUY STUFF” section right here. With the help of our fans we hope to be back on our feet quickly.

Yes, this week’s episode of HORRIFIED will still premiere this Wednesday no matter what we have to do to pull it off in time. Rain or shine (or in this case- lots of rain) we always meet our deadlines. And for those who have asked via social networking… do not fear, Arwen is fine and was not harmed in the flooding. In fact, to add her own comical twist in all of this… she tried to swim in the flooded area right before going home for the evening. Arwen loves swimming and as far as she is concerned a pool is a pool… and laughter is always the best medicine.

Thank you for your concern, your well wishes, and especially for your generosity in supporting us right now. We love you all.

Horror Comes to Arkansas in Southern Monsters

Finding a decent horror game on Steam Greenlight is almost as hard as trying to find a needle in a haystack (or trying to find an intelligent Trump voter), because there’s usually only a small helping of decent titles buried among a whole heap of shit.

However, Southern Monsters looks like it could be something special. Set deep in South Arkansas across a five day period back in 2005, it has you play as a traumatized teenager who embarks on a search for a fabled monster. Creator Kevin Snow drew upon his own life experiences of being disabled, domestic abuse, and growing up in the South, so it looks like we’re in for an incredibly touching personal story.

You can contribute to the Kickstarter campaign for Southern Monsters (not that you need to, they’re already way past their goal), and you can stay updated on the game’s Steam Greenlight profile.

Southern Monsters is a work of interactive fiction set in South Arkansas.
In South Arkansas there’s talk of a monster. Where he roams, the locust thorns build barbed walls around the riverbank, not far from your house. Your real home isn’t made of stock millwork, but telephone lines: an online forum for undiscovered creatures where everyone knows you as cripplefoot. You debate the existence of the strange as your friends leave for distant universities. Outside your childhood bedroom, the cypress trees stretch for miles.

In South Arkansas there’s talk of a monster. They say he always follows the creeks.
Choice-based narrative design from Kevin Snow.

Beautiful hand drawn artwork from Patrick Bonaduce, porcelain cat painter.

Surreal music and Foley from Priscilla Snow, nightmare noise sampler.

But first, let’s learn more about the source material, which is being released on June 27th from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (pre-order here).

Synopsis:
For more than five years, the Four Monkey Killer has terrorized the residents of Chicago; however, an unexpected break in the case comes when a man jumps in front of a city bus. The dead man was on his way to deliver a gift-wrapped message in a signature white box. What’s inside is proof that the elusive serial killer has taken one last victim before his untimely demise.

As the lead investigator on the 4MK task force, Detective Sam Porter – who has personal demons of his own – knows that even in death, the killer is far from done. When he discovers a personal diary in a jacket pocket of the body, he finds himself caught up in the mind of a psychopath, unraveling a twisted history in hopes of saving one last girl who has only days to live.

Barker is the international best-selling author of Forsaken and a finalist for the Bram Stoker Award. He was hand-selected by the Bram Stoker family and granted exclusive access to family documents to write the forthcoming Dracula prequel.

As for the aforementioned The Fourth Monkey TV adaptation, it hails from CBS with director Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man) and writer Taylor Elmore (“Justified”) on board.
