Barbara Crampton Discusses Her Role in Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich

The Puppet Master franchise has, for many horror fans, been a part of their lives since the original film premiered in 1989. The long-running series has produced twelve films (including one crossover with Demonic Toys) and a 13th film, The Littlest Reich, is on the way.

One of the stars of the film is none other than horror icon Barbara Crampton, who has appeared in films such as Re-animator, From Beyond, You’re Next, and We Are Still Here. She recently spoke with Scream Mag about her role in the 13th entry of the Puppet Master franchise, where she revealed not only her role but why she thinks she was brought back into the series (she had a cameo on the first film).

Let’s start with why Crampton feels like she was a part of this few film. She explains, “I had a cameo in the first one. I think they brought me into The Littlest Reich specifically because I worked in ’80s movies and specifically on the original movie. The producer on the Littlest Reich is Dallas Sonnier and he was one of the producers and the creative driving force behind Bone Tomahawk. He loves genre movies and the Puppet Master movies were a part of his childhood that he really loved so now that he’s working as a producer, he wanted to take over the rights for the project and have his own reboot of the film.

She also speaks about how the film was written by Bone Tomahawk scribe Craig Zahler, saying, “He’s a really talented writer and this movie has a lot of comedy in it and a lot of heart and drama as well. It’s a really tight script and they wanted to bring some other ’80s people on board like Michael Paré and Udo Kier.”

When it comes to her role, Crampton reveals that she’s a tour guide/ex-cop, stating, “I didn’t know whether they wanted people to know that my character is a tour guide and an ex-police officer but I think now it’s okay because they’ve said it was okay to post pictures of me in my uniform. I was part of the police crew that brought Andre Toulon down many years ago and then thirty years later, something is happening. There’s a convention and some puppet’s are going to be sold at this convention so a lot of people that bought puppets from Andre Toulon many years ago have come back to this first ever convention so all these people and all these puppets are brought together for the first time in a very long time and something happens. Obviously, I can’t say what happens but it’s very slyly written and there are a few different storylines going on and Craig has written a lot of really interesting characters that you care about so I’m really excited about that one too.

Udo Kier, Thomas Lennon (Hellbaby), Jenny Pellicer, Nelson Franklin (Scott Pilgrim, Jobs), Charlyne Yi (Cloverfield), Alex Beh, Tina Parker (“Breaking Bad,” The Final Destination), Skeeta Jenkins, and Michael Paré (Streets on Fire) also star for director S. Craig Zahler (Bone Tomahawk).

The storyline for Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich follows a recently divorced young man who discovers a mint condition Blade doll in his deceased brother’s closet and plans to sell the toy at a convention in Oregon celebrating the 30th anniversary of the infamous Toulon Murders. All hell breaks loose at the Postville Lodge during the auction when a strange force animates all of the various puppets throughout the convention as they go on a bloody killing spree.

Donnie Darko (Blu-ray/DVD)

Donnie DarkoStarring Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, James Duval, Drew Barrymore

Directed by Richard Kelly

Distributed by Arrow Video

When considering the most auspicious debuts of the 21st century, one film that consistently appears near the top of many lists is writer/director Richard Kelly’s bleak riff on time travel and teenage philosophy, Donnie Darko (2001). Largely ignored upon release – more than likely because the storyline prominently features a jet engine disaster and it was released a mere month after 9/11, signaling the studio death knell – Kelly’s film almost immediately gained a cult status, one that has been feverishly growing ever since. In the ensuing years a sequel was released, and by all accounts (my own included) S. Darko (2009) is a steaming pile of horseshit. Kelly has attempted to recapture the critical success (or, sadly, any success at this point) of his debut in the years since but nothing has stuck with audiences like Donnie Darko. Just over 15 years later, the film remains as potent and cleverly warped as ever.

Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal) is not your normal teenager, unless you count his complete disdain for authority. He sleepwalks. He sees a psychotherapist. He also sees Frank (James Duval), an unknown figure inside of a twisted rabbit suit. During one of his sleepwalking stints Frank tells Donnie the exact time when the world will end – 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, and 12 seconds from now. Donnie laughs. The next morning he awakens on a golf course and walks home, where he is greeted by a jet engine sticking out of the roof. Had Donnie been home that night, he surely would have died. The FAA has no explanation for the engine’s origin. Donnie, under the spell of hypnosis, explains to his psychotherapist, Dr. Thurman (Katharine Ross), that he has been seeing visions of Frank. As Donnie explains, Frank makes him do things, like flooding his school and vandalizing the property.

Despite his clear mental issues, Donnie has a small group of friends and also manages to draw the attraction of Gretchen (Jena Malone), a new girl on campus who was told to “sit next to the boy she thinks is the cutest” by their teacher, Ms. Pomeroy (Drew Barrymore). Frank’s appearance and apparent ability to portend something as major as the world ending prompts Donnie to begin speaking with Dr. Monnitoff (Noah Wyle), one of the school’s science teachers. As their conversations grow more hypothetical and in-depth, Dr. Monnitoff suggests Donnie read a book, “The Philosophy of Time Travel”, written by a former science teacher at the school, Roberta Sparrow (Patience Cleveland). The once-prominent teacher is now a frail old woman who spends all day checking her mailbox; the local kids call her “Lady Death”. Donnie’s mental state continues to deteriorate, his interactions with Frank leading to more violent actions, such as burning down the home of a local motivational speaker, Jim Cunningham (Patrick Swayze). Eventually the days tick down to mere hours and on the eve before Halloween night Donnie finally faces down the cataclysmic event that Frank warned him about.

This film nearly wouldn’t have been made if it weren’t for Drew Barrymore getting a hold of the script and jumping on board as a producer first, actress second. Her involvement also bumped up the financing considerably, allowing Kelly to fully realize his vision. Well, almost… more on that Director’s Cut in a bit. Donnie Darko could not have been better cast, and each role – no matter how small – plays an important part in shaping Donnie’s daily life and his potential future. Except for Seth Rogen, who is mostly here to be a dick and tell Jena Malone’s character he likes her boobs. Jake Gyllenhaal was still relatively new on the scene circa 2001 and his performance as Donnie is no less convincing than the killer roles he’s been handed in recent years. Donnie is smart, intimidatingly so per his principal, but his detachment from reality grows by the day – and it scares him. Gyllenhaal pulls off Donnie’s range of emotions with apparent ease, perfectly conveying the internal conflict within him every day.

A few years later in 2004, Kelly revisited his now-cemented cult classic for a director’s cut that added in some deleted footage and added in chapter cards based upon those found in Roberta Sparrow’s novel, “The Philosophy of Time Travel”. I will admit that some of the reinstated character moments add extra depth and emotion but the decision to insert the chapter cards was woefully misguided. Furthermore, the music cues and general flow of the feature is now thrown off, turning a lean drama into something bloated and less refined. I tend to lump it in with director’s cut like the Star Wars (1977-1983) films, Battle Royale (2000), and Walter Hill’s The Warriors (1979) in that it does not exist to me. It functions only as a curiosity for fans.

Perhaps it can be chalked up to the period in my life when I saw the film, just as much as it can be the very nature of Kelly’s movie itself, but Donnie Darko still packs an emotional wallop that, frankly, can feel devastatingly depressing. Donnie is a fully realized character, and his potential seems so great that his ultimate denouement brings forth some palpable emotion; you grieve with the family once all is said and done. Every film can be made a thousand different ways and Kelly, along with a very talented group of individuals, pulled it off with exquisite results. Recently, while bashing S. Darko Kelly has been recorded as saying he has “ambitious” plans for a proper sequel. My advice (which he doesn’t want or need) is simply: don’t. Sequels to ages-old properties are all the rage right now but this is lighting that can’t be captured twice; don’t dilute the original in a search for old glory. Kelly has already proven he can make a brilliant film with a unique voice. Find it again and make something else to stand the test of time.

Past home video releases of Donnie Darko have been noted for featuring a soft image with poor brightness and a pervasive darkness, and this is because Kelly and cinematographer Steven B. Poster shot the film using low lighting film stock. In short: Arrow Video’s newest 4K scan of the original 35mm negative is unquestionably the best it can and will ever appear. The 2.35:1 1080p image is still grainy, still soft, and still not vibrant. But that’s how Kelly wanted his film to look, and if the video quality is being graded based on faithfulness of reproduction then this receives the highest marks. Donnie’s world is bleak and dark so, too, is his film. It’s never going to pop or be demo material. But it certainly smokes the previous Blu-ray releases and, given the overall impressiveness of this package, is the definitive edition on home video. The director’s cut has also received the same level of restoration and it looks commensurate with the theatrical cut.

Both cuts of the film receive the same audio treatment, which is an English DTS-HD MA 5.1 surround sound track. Music plays a huge part in the movie, from the opening Echo & The Bunnymen tune to Tears for Fears’ “Head Over Heels” during an epic one-shot to composer Michael Andrews’ hypnotic, classically trained score, and everything is presented with the highest fidelity. Dialogue is understandable and clean, with no instances of hissing, pops, or crackling. Directionality is strong, with many effects seamlessly panning across the assembly of available speakers. Subtitles are available in English.

Theatrical Cut Bonus Features:

There are two audio commentary tracks included here – the first with Richard Kelly and Jake Gyllenhaal; the second with Richard Kelly plus “cast & crew”, which consists of Sean McKittrick, Drew Barrymore, Jena Malone, Beth Grant, Mary McDonnell, Holmes Osbourne, Katharine Ross, and James Duval.

“Deus Ex Machina: The Philosophy of Donnie Darko” – This retrospective piece doesn’t get too deep but there are some solid recollections here from a few of the cast & crew, most notably Kelly who discusses the production process at length. It is perhaps a bit redundant when considering the other bonus features already available, but a well-done piece nonetheless.

“The Goodbye Place” is a 1996 short film by Kelly.

There are numerous deleted & extended scenes included that can be watched with optional commentary by Richard Kelly, running for over 30 minutes.

A trailer is also included.

Director’s Cut Bonus Features:

The lone audio commentary to be found here features Richard Kelly alongside fellow filmmaker Kevin Smith.

“The Donnie Darko Production Diary” – This fly-on-the-wall piece, shot with a camcorder, covers many days of the film’s production, from location scouting to shooting with the actors and behind-the-scenes footage. Optional commentary with Director of Photography Steven Poster is available.

“Archive Interviews” features quick chats with Jake Gyllenhaal, Mary McDonnell, Holmes Osbourne, Maggie Gyllenhaal, James Duval, Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, Noah Wyle, Katharine Ross, Richard Kelly, Sean McKittrick, Nancy Juvonen, Hunt Lowry, Casey LaScala, and Steven Poster.

“They Made Me Do It” – Graffiti artists were commissioned to produce pieces inspired by the film, and they are shown here.

“They Made Me Do It II” – Subtitled “The Cult of Donnie Darko” this piece takes a look at the cultural impact the film has made since release.

“#1 Fan: A Darkomentary” – See the winning entry for a fan contest originating on the film’s website.

“Storyboard Comparisons” – See the storyboards for the film side-by-side with the finished footage.

“B-Roll Footage”, “Cunning Visions Infomercials” (with optional commentary), a music video featuring Gary Jules’ somber take on the Tears for Fears classic “Head Over Heels”, an “Image Gallery”, trailer for the Director’s Cut, and Five TV spots finish out the bonus features.

Arrow Video loves them some sexy packaging and “Donnie Darko” gets the five-star treatment. Each cut of the film is housed in a separate DigiPack, with two discs overlapping each other on the back panel while just inside each jacket is a little goodie – the theatrical cut has a fold-out double-sided poster, while the director’s cut features an envelope with postcards of inspired art that can be put together to reveal a larger image. These DigiPacks side-load into a sturdy chipboard slipcase alongside an attractive hardcover booklet with over 90 pages of material.

As any horror fan worth their salt will tell you over in England we’ve been spoiled because in theory we have had two HorrorCon‘s in one year. The 2016 edition which presented us with the likes of Kane Hodder, Doug Bradley, David McNaughton and Linnea Quigley rolled around last July, and this, the 3rd edition of England’s premier horror event was held earlier this month in Sheffield, England.

Wendy, Gill and her team of horror fiends, which is ironic since they couldn’t have been any friendlier outdid themselves once again with a host of some of the most famous and iconic horror stars from the present and yesteryear. All eyes of course were on the veteran actor, reanimated of sorts by the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Rob Zombie this past decade, the one and only Sid Haig. Haig was incredibly down to Earth and very cool, we knew he would be but seeing him in the flesh just confirmed that. Haig even mentioned a certain Uncle Creepy, and to give our regards to him!

All Photos: David Bronstein

The queue for Haig’s autograph complete with a chat was huge, but he remained animated telling each and every fan a small snippet from his incredible career. Later in the Q and A panel Haig was asked firstly about his exploitation movies with the great director Jack Hill and the many movies that he has starred in with 70’s star Pam Grier. Topic of conversation quickly turned to his Captain Spaulding role in Zombie’s House of 1,000 Corpses and then its sequel The Devil Rejects. Haig reminded the audience that he wasn’t Captain Spaulding, meaning there was much more to him than the famed clown character, however he did appreciate that his role had become, even after little more than a decade, an iconic horror villain. When a fan asked if he would ever revive the role – if Zombie decided to do a prequel- he confirmed that he would jump at the chance.

Haig was amusing throughout and okay, even though he didn’t blurt out the lines ”tasty fried chicken” or ”what’s the matter, don’t you think clowns are funny”?, he did something that was terrifically classy. Before he started his talk he looked at the audience face to face and said “remember I am only here, because you are sitting there”, it was 10 words that instantly filled your heart with even more gratitude for the man. In his photo shoot later on a fan actually came in with a Captain Spaulding 18 inch figure, “look it’s mini you”, said the fan, “so it is”, replied Haig.

The event organizer’s gave us a special introduction to the one and only Heather Langenkamp who the folks at HorrorCon UK had tried to get for a few years. Here she was in all her radiant glory. Langenkamp will of course always be remembered as Freddy Krueger’s nemesis in the classic A Nightmare on Elm Street where she played Nancy Thompson. Langenkamp was happy to talk about her own nightmares and the two movie sequels she appeared in, the fan favorite A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, where she revealed that she was happy to be killed off, especially in such shocking fashion when Freddy pretends to be her recently deceased father. And then of course she had positive words for the much missed Wes Craven and his underrated return to the franchise with New Nightmare, which Langenkamp agreed that it was still one of the most scariest roles she had been in.

The beautiful Elvira, aka Cassandra Peterson sadly with no make up on was another guest, and hey she made up for the no Elvira show with her warmth and gratitude towards the event. Plus there were plenty of Elvira fans present, let’s just say this reporter had to know when to duck and dive. Peterson talked about how her show as horror host in the classic ‘Movie Macabre’ elevated her to stardom which culminated into the classic 1986 movie Elvira:Mistress of the Dark. But would you know that one of her very first roles on television was in ‘Happy Days’? Well there you go.

Thom Mathews was a late guest for David Warner who unfortunately had to cancel due to commitments on the new Mary Poppins film, but Mathews was an inspired choice to have on the line up. For one he arguably starred in one of the best horror movies of the 80’s in The Return of the Living Dead, his character died in that but Mathews was presumed to be so cool that they just let him star again in the sequel. Sandwiched in between these movies he starred as Tommy Jarvis in Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, which has a lot of love here on Dread Central and in the horror community. So to get the chance to be in Mathews presence was pretty special and he mentioned that even more cuts were made to Jason Lives than the work print suggests.

Linda Hayden most famous for her roles in Hammer Horror’s Dracula franchise was also here, stunning for her age, she signed autographs, posed for fans and reminisced about one of horror’s biggest icons Christopher Lee. And if that wasn’t enough a certain Aussie was here, Mr. Mick Taylor aka John Jarratt, and thank God Jarratt is one of the friendliest people you could ever wish to meet- note to self that’s why he’s such a great actor. For his Q and A Jarratt broke with tradition of sitting down to answer fans questions and stood up and walked around with the microphone. It was a very refreshing idea and if horror ever deserts him Jarratt certainly has a career as stand up comedian- you read that here first.

Apart from the star studded guests were the masses of stalls selling everything from model kits, masks, cushions, t shirts, you name it it was here. Then of course there were the fans dressed up as their favorite fiends. From Freddy Krueger to Jason Voorhees. Kavity the clown was back again from last year and one fan went to a lot of trouble to dress up as the deceased character Nathan Grantham from Creepshow, “I want my cake”, one word, wow!

HorrorCon UK will surely be returning next year and we already want to know who the special guests will be, the event has outdid itself by each passing year and so the anticipation will be nail biting. Until then ghouls, you’ll have to catch up with all your classic horror movies and guess who’ll be coming to dinner in 2018?

You can find out even more information on this year’s event and be the first to know about HorrorCon UK 2018 right here.

Robert Zemeckis has teamed up with the History channel to bring to life “Blue Book”, a 10-episode drama series based around UFOs and the amount of research and depth that went into studying their cases, according to Deadline. The series was written and created by David O’Leary.

President of A+E Studios and A+E Networks Portfolio Group Paul Buccieri explains, “‘Blue Book’ is inspired by the true covert events of an era in American history shrouded in mystery. Robert Zemeckis and the creative team have shaped an incredibly compelling narrative, building upon History’s unique, growing brand of fact-based scripted programming.

Zemeckis is absolutely thrilled with this project, adding, “Rarely have I been associated with a project that is a perfect fusion of historical fact and extraordinary entertainment. We are grateful for A+E Studios’ and History’s support for what I know will be a fabulous series.

Synopsis:
The series follows Dr. J. Allen Hynek, a brilliant college professor recruited by the U.S. Air Force to spearhead this clandestine operation that researched thousands of cases, many of which were never solved. Each episode will draw from the actual files, blending UFO theories with authentic historical events from one of the most mysterious eras in United States history.

First Casting News for Channel Zero Season 3 Includes Teen Wolf’s Holland Roden

Season 2 of Syfy’s “Channel Zero,” subtitled “No-End House,” arrives this fall; and as we learned back in February, the network is already planning two more. No more details were available when the announcement was made, but today we have the first casting news for Season 3, and it includes a very familiar face!

Per Deadline, “Teen Wolf‘s” Holland Roden and Brandon Scott (“Guerrilla”) have signed on for the as-yet-untitled segment of the anthology show. Here’s what we know so far about their characters:

  • Roden will play Zoe Woods (Alice’s older sister), a sharp, tough young woman whose struggles with mental illness have worn her down over the years. She hates that her younger sister has to take care of her and would give anything to go back to the way things used to be.
  • Scott will play Officer Luke Vanczyk, a young but already jaded cop, living in the shadow of his father, the Chief of Police. Luke’s world-weary exterior hides a fierce commitment to justice and a deep love for his troubled community.

Each installment of the “Channel Zero” anthology is based on a “creepypasta” (user-generated horror stories published online).

Novelist, screenwriter, and TV writer Nick Antosca (“Hannibal,” “Teen Wolf”) serves as executive producer, showrunner, and writer alongside executive producer Max Landis (Chronicle, American Ultra), with Universal Cable Productions as the studio.

The Mysterious Package Company: The Century Beast (Mailing Experience)

$

0

The very first time I saw a Facebook post for The Mysterious Package Company I was intrigued. The company name on its own was enough to catch my interest, and what they purported to deliver even more so. The Mysterious Package Company explained themselves as exactly that, a company that delivers mysterious packages. Well whatever could that mean? At the time, I honestly didn’t really care. I’m like just about everyone else on this beautiful planet Earth, I love surprised. I equally love getting packages. There’s just nothing like getting something in the mail knowing that the sender put a lot of time, effort, and love into crafting the package. The Mysterious Package Company really delivers on all three of those notes. They clearly put a lot of time and effort into their creations, and there’s just a little bit of love in there too.

Now what exactly am I reviewing here? The Mysterious Package Company sells “experiences.” These are a set number of mailings within a themed experience that you can ship to anyone you’d like, or you can order one for yourself. The company will let you know when each of your mailings have shipped but they will not tell you what to expect at your doorway. My first mailing came in a small envelope, but some of the others came in larger bubble mailers, and the pièce de résistance (the second to last mailing) was a large wooden crate contained within a shipping box. I’ll get back to this in a moment, because for now I would like to talk about the earlier mailings.

The experience that I was sent is called “The Century Beast.” The company describes it thusly, “With The Century Beast, we share the story of an ancient secret, a story of the ocean that has taken countless lives, a story told by Vikings and by pirates, by puckish children and oblivious tourists. None of those who tell this tale were left unscathed; all were lost to madness, to death, and worse.” If you’re getting an H.P. Lovecraft vibe, then you’ve hit the nail on the head. I don’t want to spoil the story contained within The Century Beast for those who might give it a try down the road either for themselves or a family member. However, I will tell you this, the madness and death part can be taken literally. There are many souls intertwined in the tale of the Beast, and you’ll learn their fates.

The actual Mysterious Package Company experiences are all different depending on which one you’ve ordered, so this review is for The Century Beast specifically. In my mailings I received letters, newspaper clippings, small artifacts, and other papers that all told an evolving story. I received them all at varying times over the course of about three months. At the least you know you are getting your money’s worth in these experiences for the sheer volume of time you get out of them. I kept thinking the last mailing was going to show up on my doorstep, only to find another in the mail a few weeks later. The fact that I knew how many mailings there were going to be meant almost nothing since I would forget which number I was on in the process of waiting for the next one. The variety of what was included in the envelopes and bubble mailers also kept things interesting. While much of the items were of the paper variety, they were also still variable enough that the experience held my interest.

The actual items contained within are deceivingly mass produced. What I mean by this is there are many personal touches on these things. Like tear marks to lend realism to pages supposedly torn from books. There are fold marks and dog ears on certain items. However, if you look closely at the letters you can see that the handwriting is in fact printed on rather than handwritten. This is to be expected for a company of any size, it would cost much more to have everything handwritten than would be worth it for the subscribers. To be fair to The Mysterious Package Company though, I had to look really close to be able to tell that it was printed rather than written. The realism still stands.

Without giving anything away (since the discovery is really the whole point of the experience) there are other items included that are a bit more interactive than just paper. One in particular required me to go to my computer.

The second to last mailing that I mentioned earlier is one of the biggest selling points for The Mysterious Package Company. They ship their showpieces packaged in a wooden crate that is nailed shut. I was fortunate enough to have a friend on hand that works out fairly often. He made quick work of the crate for me, but others might want to have a crowbar on hand. The item contained within is clearly created in small batches, and is detailed enough to look fantastic on anyone’s mantle piece. At the very least you will have a fantastic story to tell to go along with the item. It was also incredibly heavy, more than I ever expected, which lends more credibility to the promised handcrafted nature of the artifact.

The Century Beast from The Mysterious Package Company is probably best received as a surprise gift from an unknown friend or family member. I can only imagine what it would be like to have these parcels arrive at your home without knowing where they came from as each one included a letter that referred directly to you like the sender knows you. But even as a recipient who knew the packages would be arriving, I was still surprised. The name “The Mysterious Package Company” did not appear on any but the last mailing, so I wasn’t sure what the first package was until I opened it. It was only after the first few mailings that I began to recognize “Wong Trading International.

All in all, if you’re looking for a very unique gift for a friend or relative and want to experience it from the outside looking in, The Mysterious Package Company is a great option. When the friend approaches you to talk about these strange things they’ve been getting in the mail, then you can enjoy it with them. Otherwise, if you just want to see what in the world they might send you, buying one for yourself can be equally fun. In either case, the artifact that is mailed near the end of the experience is worth it in and of itself. It’s high quality, feels expensive, and has a hell of a story to go with it. The Mysterious Package Company has been on my radar for a long while, and will continue to be into the distant future.

It should come as no surprise that independent filmmaking is become more and more common. As consumer electronics have improved in quality, the ability to produce a professional looking feature on a small budget has opened up our genre to many new creative minds. One of those minds is that of filmmaker Rob Coggin.

Earlier this month the trailer for a feature called Provenance dropped. Filmed on a modest budget of $10,000, this project is written, produced and shot by Coggin with Lexi Balestrieri (Die Die Delta Pi) servicing as the director. The film itself is shot in and around the Tampa Bay area and familiar face to Dread Central readers, Lisa Marie Kart. Check out the trailer below and an introduction to the Provenance crew.

Synopsis:
A mysterious chain of world events, cube-shaped objects and a group of silent wanderers begin to converge with devastating consequences that impact humanity on a global scale. These mysteries have roots in ancient history and may have influenced certain key events over the last several hundred years. Wanna see something REALLY scary?

To horror fans who came of age in the 1980s, the line above instantly invokes memories of Dan Aykroyd and Albert Brooks from the intro to Twilight Zone: The Movie: A nighttime road trip takes a nasty turn when a seemingly innocuous question leads to major terror. Now, on a bi-monthly basis, I’ll be asking, “Wanna see something REALLY scary?” with the goal of shocking you with chilling footage plumbed from the darkest corners of YouTube.

11B-X-1371 is a video of unknown origin that was sent to the Swedish tech site GadgetZZ.com in May 2015; it’s been alarming and intriguing internet detectives, cryptographers, and paranormal investigators alike ever since. It features a man dressed in all-black plague doctor garb standing in an abandoned structure. The two-minute video features dissonant noises, mysterious coordinates, and a blinking message quickly identified as Morse code. Have a watch, but be warned: Many viewers find this video very unsettling.

In the 2 years since its discovery, much of 11B-X-1371 has been deciphered while the video itself remains shrouded in mystery. A stream of 1s and 0s was identified as binary which, when decoded, spells “Muerte”: The Spanish word for “Death”; the film’s title also includes the phrase: “Te queda 1 año menos,” which translates to “You have one year left—or less.” (Anyone else getting flashbacks of The Ring?). Other alarming aspects of the plague doctor video include the exact coordinates for The White House and the phrase RED LIPSTICK TENTH (an anagram, perhaps, for “KILL THE PRESIDENT”?).

Wanna see something REALLY scary?

As if all these aspects of 11B-X-1371 aren’t creepy enough, code-busters found images embedded in the sound files, including the text: ““You’re already dead”. Some savvy techies have also uncovered pictures of extreme violence against women; while others claim these were lifted from the torture porn movie The Bunny Games, this assertion has not be proven conclusively. The sound files also include a skull and crossbones, which can hardly be misinterpreted.

Check out the video below from The Esoteric Detective, who dives deep into 11B-X-1371 with additional details and updates on the most current theories regarding the video’s meaning and origins.

Besetment (2017)

Starring Abby Wathen, Marlyn Mason, Michael Meyer

Directed by Brad Douglas

Gainful employment: it certainly isn’t around every corner, and at times people are forced to take a job that they necessarily might not enjoy just to make ends meet…then there are those jobs that make you wish you’d never filled out an application. Today, the focus is on Brad Douglas’s first directorial venture, and it’s called Besetment – settle in and grab a cold one, because this could get messy.

Abby Wathen stars in this thriller as Amanda, a young woman whose life is in a bit of a pickle, with a functioning alcoholic of a mother (Lindsae Klein) and a home situation that isn’t very conducive to a productive existence, her job hunt leads her to the small, sleepy backwoods town in Oregon. Her new gig at a small hotel as a housekeeper doesn’t promise to pay much, but at least she’s back on her feet…well, for now anyway. Run by Mildred (Mason) and her son Billy (Meyer) – two of the sweetest souls you’d ever want to encounter, that is until after a night of celebratory cocktails, Amanda wakes up with seemingly no recognition of what has taken place…probably better that she didn’t know anyway. The film doesn’t tiptoe around its intentions, and shoves its rather-large premise right in our pieholes, regardless of whether or not we’re willing to accept it at the time – no bother, because it’s shocking, violent and completely against the grain of any workers’ agreement clause on occupational safety.

As time passes, the plan for dear, sweet Amanda begins to emerge from the fog, and the details of what has been taking place are a bit, demented. I’ll leave you all waiting at the check-in desk here, as I wouldn’t want to spill any more details, as there’s been plenty of other things “spilled” in this film. Surprisingly enough, the acting in this film was markedly better than I’d thought it was going to be, and the instances of wrought terror are enough to keep your eyes peeled. While there are a few sluggish moments in pacing, the overall tempo is a fluid one, and it aids in the story’s progression – Douglas is obviously someone who knows how to keep a film moving along and not beating his audience with the boredom stick in order to convey his directive.

Overall, Besetment is one of those rainy-day watches that should serve any horror fan well if they’re looking for a hidden-gem among a sea of tarnished rocks – give this one a look, and please take some notes – if you ever find yourself out of a job, just cause it looks good on paper, doesn’t mean you won’t end up somebody’s prisoner wrapped up in clean sheets…well, I hope they’re clean sheets.

Marvin (Young MC) Young Takes Us Inside Justice Served

If you were a kid back in the late 80s-early 90’s, perhaps his stage name will ring a bell – Young MC, anyone? The song was “Bust A Move” and it was the biggest thing to hit the radio in some time. As we hop into the time-machine and leap forward to 2015, and Marvin Young (the MC’s real name) took his directorial leap with his first venture into the chair behind the lens with Justice Served, a thriller that’s gotten more than its share of praise as of yet. He was more than generous to give us a few minutes of his time to discuss the film, as well as what he’s got coming up next – settle in and enjoy!

DC: Can you give us a description of the film’s premise, as well as how the film’s inception came to be?

MY: JUSTICE SERVED begins with a therapy session for a Los Angeles widower named Luke Palmer. Galen Terry, the accused killer of Luke’s wife was found not guilty at trial due to legal technicalities, and Luke has needed therapy ever since. Luke wins a trip to a spa in Scottsdale for a three day weekend vacation. During the drive from the airport, Luke is kidnapped, drugged, and left unconscious. Luke wakes up in a mysterious room which is divided in two by a glass wall. Luke’s side of the room has a desk, a computer keyboard and an ominous looking red button on a podium. The other side of the room has a large wooden chair with handcuffs, restraints and wires attached to it. Suddenly a hooded man is dragged into the other side of the room and restrained in the chair. When the hood is removed, Luke recognizes him as Galen Terry, his wife’s accused killer. A mysterious voice comes over the loudspeaker and says: “Hello, my name is Justice. You have been brought here to retry the case of California vs. Terry for the murder of Corinne Palmer… The defendant’s chair is electrified. The electricity is controlled by the red button. Feel free to test it out.” It took me almost two years to come up with the draft of the script that we went to talent with. Within that two years there was some interest from directors and production companies, but in the typical Hollywood fashion none of those opportunities came to fruition. I was presented with the opportunity of working with the film school at Arizona State University to produce the film myself in Arizona. From there the decision was made for me to direct, and JUSTICE SERVED went into pre-production.

DC: You seemed like a natural in front of the camera, but did you find any difficulties in this being your first directorial venture?

MY: Directing a film is such a big job in its own right, and I ended up putting on numerous other hats as the production went on. On my first day, I said “action” too soon… twice. But I gained my footing pretty quickly because I found myself directing Lance Henriksen on my second day ever behind the camera. A few days later I was directing Gail O’Grady through a great performance of her own. Those experiences have made me a better director without doubt. I gave myself the rather large role of Troy because I was concerned that I wouldn’t get name talent for the other roles in JUSTICE SERVED. I wanted to make sure the audience saw a familiar face for enough of the film to keep their interest. This was obviously before Lance, Gail, Lochlyn, and the other experienced actors agreed to be in my movie. As far as my acting goes, I used the same approach that I do in my rap career. The strength of the performance starts with the writing. So I took two full days and did a Marvin/Troy polish on the script. Anything that Troy said which didn’t sound natural coming out of Marvin’s mouth was changed. By the end, I had nearly memorized all my lines verbatim, which was a big help for me and the other actors as well. Having said that, I will definitely write much smaller roles for myself in future projects.

DC: With the insanely talented Lance Henriksen in your cast, did you just hand him the script and let him have his way with his character?

MY: My knee-jerk answer to that question would be “Was it that obvious?” But my honest answer is a little more nuanced than that. Of course I was watching the monitor saying to myself ‘Oh shit! I’m directing Lance Henriksen!’ But I also was relating to him and his approach from my perspective of being a Grammy winning rapper in the booth dealing with record producers. I’ve been in multiple situations where a producer has made me perform a dozen perfect takes of a verse, only to go back and use the first or second take as the master. In all of those situations I was more experienced than the producer, and he was just making me do the takes because he felt that was the thing to do. When I did my verse for “All In The Same Gang” with Dr. Dre, he had me do two takes and that was it. He knew he had it. Obviously I liked Dre’s approach better.

So the first time that my script supervisor showed me where Lance deviated from my Bible script, I had a choice to make. I could yell “Cut!” and be the director who insisted on every ‘i’ being dotted and every ‘t’ being crossed. Or I could let Lance and Christina Rose complete the scene and see what new perspective they brought to it. In every case, Lance got me from my A to my Z and gave me what I needed. I didn’t have to change any other dialogue, plot points or scenes to accommodate Lance’s performance. Lance did his thing (brilliantly I must say) and I did mine.‎

DC: Lastly, after the release of Justice Served, what can fans expect to see from you down the road?

MY: The release of JUSTICE SERVED has actually taken longer than I expected because of my touring schedule. In 2016 I had well over 100 live performances. The vast majority were part of the “I Love The 90s Tour”. In 2017, the tour is going to Australia, New Zealand, the UK as well as over a dozen dates in Canada. I’m actually in a hotel room in Halifax, Nova Scotia at 5am in the Atlantic Time Zone. I have several script ideas that I am developing and I hope to shoot another film in 2018. Fans can expect a fun ride in whatever they see me do. Smart characters, plot twists and things you don’t see coming. I watch a lot of preview screenings with audiences and I pay attention to what people respond to from movies. Both positively and negatively. Ironically it feels very similar to the approach I’ve taken with my music over the years. Treat the audience with respect and they will respond to you in kind.

Stranger Things Producer Talks New Monsters in Second Season

It feels like a very long wait until this Halloween when Netflix will be dropping the second season of their hit supernatural mystery series “Stranger Things”. With little to go on and several unanswered questions still lingering from the first season, fans (such as myself) are desperate for any news about what is coming next.

While he didn’t say too much, show director/producer Shawn Levy spoke recently with YouTube channel Gold Derby about the second season, saying, “Will Byers is very much at the center of several intersecting challenges, threats in season two and I think overall the forces of evil that are inherent in season two make that Demogorgon look quaint in retrospect.

Considering we’ve seen flashes of a giant monster in the skies over Hawkins, I’m not surprised it’ll make the Demogorgon look quaint! And having Will be the focus of the second season makes total sense. While his disappearance was the core of the first season’s plot, he himself was absent for the vast majority of the show. Now that he’s back, it makes all the sense in the world that we want to see what the Upside-Down did to him during his stay there.

Ice Nine Kills Celebrates The Shining Anniversary With Themed Track That Includes Stanley Kubrick’s Grandson!

If you didn’t know, this week marks the 37th anniversary of Stanley Kubrick’s brilliant adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining (and the 40th anniversary of the novel’s release), although the acclaimed horror author is notorious for not sharing that opinion! Still, while he may not enjoy it, I absolutely adore that film and love that this week has been seeing so many people online share in that sentiment.

Enter Boston, MA metalcore band Ice Nine Kills, who today have released a new single by the name of “Enjoy Your Slay”, which is inspired directly by The Shining to the point that it even features Sam Kubrick, the grandson of Stanley Kubrick!

The band told our pal Jerry Smith, who relayed it to us, the following:

With every song on the last album being inspired by a famous novel, it wasn’t long after it’s release before fans began requesting us to create more music based on literature. When it came time to choose which book would be the basis for the final chapter of our album cycle, we decided to put the choice in the hands of our fans by having them vote between the two most requested novels, ‘The Shining’ and ‘Psycho.’

It was a close race, but Stephen King’s classic tale of the Overlook Hotel’s winter caretaker and his descent into madness emerged as the victor. Being huge fans of not only the novel but also of Stanley Kubrick’s brilliant film adaptation, we knew in order for the song to work we would need to capture the unnerving isolation and traumatizing scenes of horror that occurred on those 447 pages and 144 minutes of film.

As a special treat for fans of the story, we were able to secure an unbelievable guest vocal appearance on the track by none other than Sam Kubrick, Stanley Kubrick’s grandson. On our tour of the U.K. last fall, we became great friends with his band Shields, whose technical prowess and dynamic songwriting blew us away. Being a big fan of their band and Sam’s vocals, we knew his inclusion on the song would provide a strong connection to the story’s legacy. His performance undeniably adds a layer and depth to the composition that is truly chill inducing.“

Below is a stream of the new song as well as the lyrics. Give it a listen and enjoy your slay, er…stay!

You can buy the single via iTunes.

Lyrics:

Plagued by the past and down a badly beaten path
Lies a place, one of a kind
Cursed by a blinding light that no one can outshine

A mess of a man, his fate unknown
One drink away from a broken home
He can’t give up but can’t go on like this
A five year old longs to be free
From visions he can’t help but see
And a mother who can’t understand

That the writing on my walls will tell you how it’s gonna be
Oh can’t you see that you’re just rats within my halls
To hell with hospitality (and we all scream):

Welcome to your last resort don’t Overlook the past
If you need help finding piece of mind don’t hesitate to axe
They can see the vacancy so say goodbye to sanity
We’re here to help you on your way
Thank you very much enjoy your slay

Face down in the lap luxury
Fuck the comforts of reality
Turn the page, disengage and destroy
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy
I’m not gonna hurt you
I’m just gonna bash your fucking brains in

Now the fun has just begun
And one by one your wife and son
Hang in the web you’ve spun as family ties come undone
REDRUM!
The writing on my walls will tell you how it’s gonna be
So follow me
Cross out the words “do not disturb”
On the doors of depravity (and we all scream):

Welcome to your last resort don’t Overlook the past
If you need help finding piece of mind don’t hesitate to axe
They can see the vacancy so say goodbye to sanity
We’re here to help you on your way
Thank you very much enjoy your slay

An Identical scream from 217
Slashes to ashes
Dust to dust
Hey Danny…COME PLAY WITH US

The writing on my walls will tell you how it’s gonna be
Oh can’t you see (that we all scream):

Welcome to your last resort don’t Overlook the past
If you need help finding piece of mind don’t hesitate to axe
They can see the vacancy so say goodbye to sanity
We’re here to help you on your way
Thank you very much, and please do keep in touch

More acquisition news out of Cannes where we’re told that StudioCanal has acquired Epic Pictures Group’s The Monster Project for UK distribution. The film has also sold to France, Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia and other territories. No release details have been given but I expect we’ll hear very soon what the plans are.

The Monster Project already has US release details set with the film becoming available on VOD platforms and in limited theaters on August 18th.

Epic Pictures Group co-founder Patrick Ewald states, “The Monster Project is the perfect mix of classic creature feature conventions with an added level of psychological horror which is truly terrifying.

Co-founder Shaked Berenson adds, “This is a fun and fresh take on the monster movies of the past, and it’s horrifying at every turn.

The Monster Project was directed by Victor Mathieu, who co-wrote the film with Shariya Lynn and Corbin Billings. The film stars Toby Hemingway, Justin Bruening, Yvonne Zima, Jamal Quezaire, and Murielle Zuker.

Mathieu says of the film, “The Monster Project blends the horror and action genres into the first-person style of filmmaking to deliver an adrenaline-packed, entertaining ride.

Synopsis:
The Monster Project follows a group of aspiring horror filmmakers, eager to raise their YouTube subscriber count, who post an online casting call for “real life” monsters to interview for their documentary. They find three participants and choose to film them sharing their haunted experiences in a mansion in the woods on the night of a lunar eclipse. The production suddenly turns into a nightmare when the participants transform into a real skinwalker, vampire, and demon forcing the unsuspecting crew to fight for their lives.
