Friday the 13th: The Game – How to Kill Jason

$

Killing Jason in Friday the 13th: The Game is pretty damned hard, and doing so requires LOTS of cooperation between you and your fellow camp counselors and a little help from one of Jason’s greatest nemeses.

So, how do you put down everyone’s favorite mama’s boy? Follow the steps below. Of course SPOILERS are about to ensue so STOP reading here if you don’t want to know what to do and who Jason’s nemesis is.

Still with us? GOOD!

STEP 1:

Locate the CB Radio.

Once you have the CB radio up and running, you can use it to call in none other than Tommy Jarvis (Friday the 13th Parts 4-6). In order to get Jarvis into the game, one of the counselors will have to either escape or make the ultimate sacrifice for the team and let Jason get an easy kill. The now either escaped or dead player will come back as Jarvis, and he’s a man on a mission: Kill Jason.

Step 2:

Locate Pamela Voorhees’ Sweater.

We’ve all seen the shrine Jason set up for his mom. Good Jason. Good boy. Good. The next step is electing someone playing as a female character to go to Jason’s house and find the infamous article of clothing. Once she does and puts it on, it gives that player a ONE-TIME USE ONLY ABILITY that allows Jason to be stunned and confused. Think Ginny in Friday the 13th Part 2. More on that in a minute.

Step 3:

Stun Jason and Knock His Mask Off.

Easier said than done, believe me. Jason will need to be stunned or trapped. Our recommendation is to lure him into a previously set bear trap. Once he’s still, you’ll need a blunt weapon to bash the hell out of his skull, and his mask will (eventually) go flying off. It helps to have multiple counselors hitting him at the same time. Jason, as you know, is a pretty tough sonofabitch so expect some casualties.

Interestingly enough… the person playing as Jarvis can grab the mask and put it on at this point, but that doesn’t seem to be a necessity in getting the job done. However, if Jarvis has the mask, Jason cannot get it back, so your won’t be forced to repeat the above step.

Step 4:

Sweater Time!

You… you wearing Pamela’s sweater, while Jason is unmasked, NOW is the time to use your sweater to stun Jason. You’ll even get to hear Pamela talking to Jason, thereby confusing him. This is so fucking cool.

Step 5:

The Beat Down.

Once Jason is stunned, you only have a few seconds to beat on him until he drops to his knees. Hesitate and die.

Step 6:

The Death Blow.

Once Jason is on his knees, the player who is Tommy Jarvis must approach him and hit whatever button is INTERACT on your controller. Once you do that, BOOM!… a cut-screen showing off Tommy killing Jason… at least for now.

There you have it, kids! Don’t forget to join the Dread Central Horror Community Group if you’re on Xbox One to get a game going with horror fans from around the world!

Things will hopefully get really friggin’ violent in the latest comics-to-film adaptation to come our way, Accident Man. On tap right now we have several stills for you from the flick which include your first look at Scott Adkins in the title role.

The Jesse Johnson-directed film also features Ashley Greene (The Apparition, Twilight), Ray Stevenson (Punisher: War Zone) as Big Ray; Brittany Ashworth (The Crucifixion, Hostile) as Greene’s sister, Fran Adams; David Paymer (Drag Me to Hell) as Milton; Amy Johnston (Lady Bloodfight) as Jane the Ripper; and Michael Jai White (Spawn, Falcon Rising) as Mick.

The film is based on a character from the graphic novel from the defunct monthly UK comic Toxic!, which was written by Pat Mills in the early 90s.

The story centers on the life of Mike Fallon, a high-class hitman, known for making assassinations look like unfortunate accidents. Fallon’s cavalier attitude changes the day his ex-girlfriend, Beth, is murdered. He teams up with Beth’s new girlfriend, Charlie, on a murderous rampage to find out who killed her.

Friday the 13th From IllFonic / Gun Media

Rated M for Mature

Available for Xbox One (reviewed), PlayStation 4, Steam

I don’t wanna scare anyone, but I’m gonna give it to you straight about Jason. His body was never recovered from the lake after he drowned. And if you listen to the old-timers in town, they’ll tell you he’s still out there, some sort of demented creature, surviving in the wilderness, full grown by now… stalking… stealing what he needs, living off wild animals and vegetation. Some folks claim they’ve even seen him, right in this area. The girl that survived that night at Camp Blood, that… Friday the 13th? She claimed she saw him. She disappeared two months later… vanished. Blood was everywhere. No one knows what happened to her. Legend has it that Jason saw his mother beheaded that night. Then, he took his revenge, a revenge he continued to seek if anyone ever enters his wilderness again. And, by now, I guess you all know we’re the first to return here. Five years… five long years he’s been dormant. And he’s hungry. Jason’s out there… watching… always on the prowl for intruders… ready to kill… ready to devour… thirsty for young blood.” – Paul, Friday the 13th Part 2.

Nothing has changed.

That familiar and unmistakable Harry Manfredini score is blaring! Ki ki ki… Ma ma ma… is ringing in your ears, haunting your every step. You and your fellow counselors are trying desperately to get the car outside working. Finally you do… you gun the engine, but then seemingly out of nowhere Jason Voorhees steps out, stops your car, and pulls you screaming out of the window while everyone else in the car just watches on in horror until you’re hacked apart in front of them.

No, this isn’t a typical scene from a Friday the 13th flick, but it may as well be. This is a typical moment from Friday the 13th: The Game, and it puts YOU in the shoes of a scared counselor or Jason himself.

Know what else it is? One of the single most fun times I’ve ever had playing a video game.

It’s easy to dismiss this as an Evolve-type game which puts you and your hunters against a player-controlled monster, but what sets it apart from Evolve and all the other games of its ilk are the attention to detail and love that’s gone into every aspect of making this feel like a true Friday the 13th experience.

When the game starts, you and your fellow counselors are gathered together until Jason appears and you all scatter. The game begins. One of the up to eight players is given the role of Jason with the others being counselors. You start off the game alone as either Jason or meat for the beast.

Let’s tackle the counselor experience first.

When you first start playing as a counselor, you are by yourself. Look at your map; you’ll see either white circles, which show you the location of a fellow counselor, or a white arrow pointing in the direction of where your friends are. This is where proximity chat really shines. You cannot hear anyone but the people around you. I recommend teaming up with your friend(s) as soon as you can as there is safety in numbers, even if said numbers are only there to be killed while you flee, and you will flee.

As a counselor your job is to do one of three things…

  • Survive the night by hiding.
  • Escape the scene by doing the things on your objective list which can lead to police rescue, get away by boat or car, etc.
  • Try to kill Jason by working together to complete the objectives to knock everyone’s favorite mama’s boy out for good!

Pressing the “Select” button brings up a list of things to do to get around your camp. There are cabins to loot, which are home to everything from places to hide, objective items, and useful things like a pocketknife that can be used to stab Jason should he catch you so that you may get away… for now. You’ll also find a walkie-talkie to talk to other counselors who are far away, bear traps, weapons, an invaluable map (holy shit, does this come in handy), and more. Even cooler, if you or one of the other counselors completes an objective (i.e., gassing up the car), a check mark will appear next to whatever has been done. This makes it easy to always know what’s going on and work together to survive the night.

Different counselors with different abilities unlock as you progress through the game, and you can buy them perks using the points you accrue from playing, as well as different outfits and more. When Jason is upon you, the music kicks in; and as soon as it does, the adrenaline will hit you like few other games. Really stellar stuff.

Now then, let’s talk about playing as Jason…

Having Kane Hodder do the motion-capture really adds to the authenticity of playing as Mr. Voorhees. Your character not only looks like Jason, but he moves like him, too. Breathes like him. Kills like him. Some of the franchise’s best kills have been re-created here in stunning gory detail, but I won’t spoil it. Experience it for yourself, and get ready to smile from ear to ear.

As Jason you start off in your house at your mother’s shrine. Throughout your stint as the great masked one, your mom will be giving you advice, another incredible touch. Again, thanks to proximity chat, you can only hear the counselors when you’re near them.

I know what you’re saying: The camps are pretty massive; how do you know where to go? Here’s the neat thing… Jason has abilities. Depending on which Jason you choose to play as, there’s an array of them to make finding your prey easier. Some abilities let you swim faster than counselors, while others can make you warp around to different areas of the map. There’s even one that lets you know exactly which direction to head in to find those naughty teens who should have been watching you when you were drowning. Look what they did to you… LOOK WHAT THEY DID! Sorry… the mother’s voice. It’s in my head, too. Moving on.

Needless to say, when you’re playing with a Jason who knows what he’s doing, you’re in for a hell of a time as they can be just as lethal as you’d imagine. When you’re not using your abilities, you can only detect noise made by the counselors on screen so make sure you pick your Jason wisely to suit your play style.

Now to the downside… What about all the bad things you’ve no doubt heard since the game launched about finding a match and actually playing the game? Well, believe them. They are there. If you’re on Xbox One, you can only join or be invited to private matches for now as the “Quick Play” option does not work. We wrote about a work-around so that you can easily find a game here. These are server issues because of the unexpected demand to play that Gun Media just wasn’t prepared for. They’re working on it via several patches so sit tight. I know it’s frustrating, but holy shit… when you get into a game, you’ll quickly forget about your troubles.

There are also a lot of glitches you’ll run into. There’s some really bad collision detection plus some visual anomalies like floating objects here and there. Hell, I’ve even seen Jason’s victims turn invisible mid-kill. Again… these will all be patched; and we’ve been promised new modes, including single player and story mode, and all sorts of goodies to make up for our torment. We eagerly anticipate them.

Friday the 13th: The Game, even temporary warts and all, is a gooey splatterific wet dream for fans of the franchise, and things will only get better from here. This is in every sense of the phrase an absolute love letter to both the franchise and its fans… scrawled in blood and dripping from the carcass of a hanging corpse for all to see. Bravo.

Unable to Do Alien 5, Neill Blomkamp Has Filmed a Short Film With Sigourney Weaver

Back in April, director Neill Blomkamp took to Twitter to announce that he and his banner, Oats Studios, would be releasing experimental short films via Steam. At the time, he was wondering if people would be willing to pay for these clips with seemingly many people saying that they would be happy to chip in for quality content. A month and a half later, the first trailer for Blomkamp’s ventures has been released and can be seen below.

If you’re eagle-eyed, you’ll catch a quick flash of Sigourney Weaver in the trailer. Weaver and Blomkamp, who joined forces for 2015’s Chappie, were supposed to work together on an Alien film that would’ve taken place after the second film but ignored Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection. However, due to Ridley Scott’s insistence that the prequel series, Prometheus and the recent Alien: Covenant, take precedence, that idea was ultimately scrapped. Additionally, and I may be mistaken here, but there even looks like a digitally de-aged Michael Biehn making an appearance.

I was blown away by Blomkamp’s District 9 and I enjoyed both Chappie and Elysium. I honestly feel that Blomkamp is one of the most engaging sci-fi directors working today, so seeing this trailer brings me nothing but joy. You bet your ass I’ll be checking each of these shorts when they premiere.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases: May 30, 2017

Welcome again, friends. Hopefully everyone had a nice long weekend because we’ve got a good-sized list for you, with a fairly decent amount of classics. The only discrepancy to speak of is 1989’s Hellbent. This limited edition Blu-ray may have already dropped September of last year, but it popped again for this week, so here you go.

Fans of TV’s “Scream Queens” might be interested in The Blackcoat’s Daughter. Emma Roberts stars in this haunting movie that gets a Blu-ray/DVD release this week.

Sci-fi/horror movie Rupture will be heading to DVD. You can check out an interview with director Steven Shainberg here.

Credited with being the world’s first splatter movie filmed entirely from a first-person perspective, 2013’s Hotel Inferno is getting another DVD release, this time including a bonus CD with the movie’s soundtrack.

The 1980s is definitely the dominant decade this week. In addition to the aforementioned Hellbent, there are seven other releases from the era of being rad. Starting in 1980 with The Hearse and finishing in 1989 with The Jigsaw Murders, there are plenty of options for you to check out while in your parachute pants.

Going further back, we have two pretty awesome Blu-rays to talk about. The first is a Christopher Lee double feature, containing both Blood of Fu Manchu and Castle of Fu Manchu. The second is 1973’s Blackenstein.

Next week we’ve got a pretty light list, but the following is pretty stacked. Keep checking back so you don’t miss anything, and as always, pleasant viewing.

John Hart (TV’s “The Lone Ranger”), 40s Hollywood starlet Andrea King (The Beast With Five Fingers), and even former mob moll/stripper Liz Renay (Desperate Living) star in this jaw-dropper directed by William A. Maria Rohm (Venus in Furs) and Shirley Eaton (Goldfinger) co-star in this wild Fu Manchu feature written and produced by Harry Alan Towers (Eugenie) and directed by the one and only Jess Franco (Vampyros Lesbos). Also known as Kiss And Kill, Against All Odds, and Kiss of Death, Blue Underground presents The Blood of Fu Manchu in High Definition, complete with additional scenes of violence!

The Castle of Fu Manchu

Christopher Lee (The Lord of the Rings) returns as the diabolical super-villain who, along with his sadistic daughter Lin Tang (Tsai Chin of Casino Royale), creates a fiendish new chemical weapon that will turn the seas into a giant block of ice. But when his archenemy Nayland Smith (Richard Greene of The Adventures of Robin Hood) tracks the madman’s trail of kidnapping, murder, and massive global destruction, he himself becomes trapped in Fu Manchu’s impenetrable lair of cruelty. Can any of the world’s top secret agents (including a wild performance by Jess Franco) stop the cold-blooded terror that lives in The Castle of Fu Manchu?

Maria Perschy (The Ghost Galleon) and Rosalba Neri (99 Women) co-star in this notorious sequel directed by Jess Franco (The Bloody Judge) that marked Christopher Lee’s final performance as the infamous Chinese madman. Now Blue Underground presents The Castle of Fu Manchu in High Definition, packed with Extras for a disc full of Fu Manchu mayhem!

Ridley Scott’s Original Alien Has Been Recut as a Comedy

Ridley Scott’s 1979 sci-fi/horror film Alien is nothing short of a masterpiece. It’s a taut thriller, one that’s brilliantly written to maximize tension, paranoia, and fear. But what if the film were actually a comedy? What if, and hear me out here, the real villain of the film wasn’t the Xenomorph but was really Jonesy the cat?

The folk over at Mashable Watercooler have decided to cut a trailer from Alien using various scenes to make it look like the cat onboard is up to no good and the crew are desperate to try and capture it. It’s rather adorable and the sound effects and music used really hammer the point home, creating a trailer that works surprisingly well!

While I’ll never be able to see Alien as anything but a horror treasure, this put a huge smile on my face!

Meet the Characters of Far Cry 5

Following the official announcement of Far Cry 5, Ubisoft has gone ahead and released new character trailers for some of the allies you’ll be encountering across the huge open world of Hope County, Montana. Lord knows you’ll be needing all the help you can get.

In Far Cry 5, you take on the role of the sheriff’s deputy attempting to bring down a fundamentalist religious cult known as Eden’s Gate, which is led by a psychotic preacher named Joseph Seed.

Whilst the fate of Ubisoft remains uncertain as they continue to struggle against a hostile takeover from Vivendi, I’m gonna go ahead and say that Far Cry 5 will likely be one of their best games to date. With the series having sold over 20 million copies worldwide, it’s also pretty likely to be a huge financial hit.

The game will be released on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on February 27, 2018. Ubisoft has confirmed that we’ll be seeing more at their E3 press conference on June 12th.

The Pastor, Jerome Jeffries
Jerome was Hope County’s parish priest for more than 15 years and was one of the first in the community to befriend Joseph Seed, the founder of The Project at Eden’s Gate. Before long, Jerome’s flock left to follow Joseph, and Jerome tried to take it in stride – until Eden’s Gate locked down the county. Not only did Jerome lose his church, but he was beaten and left for dead in the woods. Jerome survived and vowed to protect the cult’s intended victims, and as a Gulf War vet, he’s got the training and experience to lead Hope County back to the light.

Mary May Fairgrave
A lifelong resident of Hope County, Mary May used to own and operate her family’s saloon, The Spread Eagle. The bank foreclosed on the place after her parents died and money ran short, however, and Eden’s Gate took it over for pennies on the dollar. Watching the cult swallow up her birthright is a bridge too far, and she’s ready to take back the Eagle – and Hope County – by any means necessary.

Nick Rye (Gun for Hire)
Nick comes from a long line of military pilots, and his decision not to enlist created a deep rift between him and his father. Instead, Nick took up the family legacy in a different way, waging war against farm pests as a cropduster pilot and trying to start a family with his wife, Kim. Lately, though, Eden’s Gate has been making his life difficult through its aggressive attempts to buy his cropdusting business, and as the situation in Hope County heats up, it seems war has finally come to Nick’s doorstep. And this time, he’s answering the call.

About Far Cry 5
Welcome to Hope County, Montana, land of the free and the brave, but also home to a fanatical doomsday cult known as The Project at Eden’s Gate that is threatening the community’s freedom. Stand up to the cult’s leader, Joseph Seed and the Heralds, and spark the fires of resistance that will liberate the besieged community.

In this expansive world, your limits and creativity will be tested against the biggest and most ruthless baddest enemy Far Cry has ever seen. It’ll be wild and it’ll get weird, but as long as you keep your wits about you, the residents of Hope County can rest assured knowing you’re their beacon of hope.

Join the Resistance on February 27, 2018, with Far Cry 5. Available on PlayStation 4 system, Xbox One, and PC.

9 Spooky Horror Atari 2600 Games That Are Worth a Damn

$

0

The Atari 2600 isn’t known for its horror games, but quite a few were released for the system. While they may not make you leave skid marks on your Snuggie, some of them are worth checking out.

Alien

On the Atari 2600, nobody can hear you scream. They’ll hear you crying instead from playing this Pac-Man clone. Based on the original film, you play as Ripley who has to run through the USCSS Nostromo dodging sad looking xenomorphs (H.R. Giger’s influence is nowhere to be seen on these sloppy sprites). If you play your cards right, you can snatch up a flamethrower (think the power pellet in Pac-Man) and turn the tables. This one is a smidge more enjoyable than watching Alien: Resurrection sober.

Frankenstein’s Monster

Run through the castle to defeat the evil titular monster of Dr. Frankenstein. Much like other games of the time, this is a rip-off of an arcade game. In this case, this Donkey Kong knock-off has controls stiffer than the bolts in Frankie’s neck. The stages are a bit different and the Frankenstein Monster appears menacing enough, but the gameplay is poor.

Ghost Manor

Ghost Manor is quite ambitious. You play as a couple of kids going into the (what else?) Ghost Manor. After catching a rainbow ghost in a graveyard, you have to battle skeletons and a fierce mummy. This is not an exciting as it sounds, but the levels are quite varied, making this one of the more ambitious titles for the time.

Gremlins

Based on the hit movie, you play as Billy Peltzer, a kid who gets a menacing creature as a pet. Gameplay revolves around two rotating stages. First, you collect as many Mogwai as possible to keep them from eating burgers and turning into their cocoons. The Mogwais transform into Gremlins, requiring you to blast them into submission in the second round. Like the best Atari games, this keeps the gameplay nice and simple.

Halloween

Based on the original John Carpenter film, Halloween has you rescuing a bunch of kids as the evil Michael Myers stalks you in your house. Taking place over two floors, you have to shuffle kids to the safe areas, but beware! If you hear the iconic Carpenter music theme squawking through your speakers, that means Michael Myers is near. He has a knife and he’s not afraid to use it. This game is pretty suspenseful. Color me surprised.

Haunted House

A bit of a dungeon crawl like the classic Adventure, this has you roaming through a haunted house collecting treasures. You are represented by wide open eyes and you’ll need a flashlight to see the monsters that lie within. This one’s pretty cool if you with a creepy atmosphere to boot.

Rampage

A port of the arcade game, Rampage has you playing as a human turned monster who smashes his way from city to city. The Atari 2600 can’t muster up the iconic graphics and sounds of the original, leaving things in a blocky messy. It’s impressive the gameplay is close to the original, albeit simplified to a degree. Stick with one of the million other home versions of this game.

Revenge of the Beefsteak Tomatoes

This is a very odd shooting game that’s rips off the horror comedy Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. You have to blast Beefsteak Tomatoes while avoiding their attacks. That’s it. Lacking in humor and sophistication, this is easily the worst game I played for this list. You’re better off getting in a screaming contest with a sack of tomatoes.

Texas Chain Saw Massacre

Based on the controversial Tobe Hooper flick, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre has an inspired take on its bloody source material. You play as the killer Leatherface who has to whip out his chainsaw and slice up the men and women who are running away (!!!). Sure, the controls are stiff, but the digitized screams of your victims are hilarious. You die when you run out of gas. Playing a bit like an endless runner in the mold of Temple Run, it’s more fun than it should be.
