The Walking Dead: Recap of and an Inside Look at Episode 3.05 - Say The Word

Have you recovered from last week's devastating episode of "The Walking Dead" yet? Andrew Lincoln's heart-wrenching performance at the end of it was Emmy-worthy, and tonight's Episode 3.05, titled "Say The Word", continues where we left off.

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read any further if you haven’t watched the episode yet. This is a recap, not a review. Continue only if you have watched it.

The episode, which was directed by Greg Nicotero (no surprise given the amount of gore it contained), began in the relative calmness of Americana. Woodbury was having a sunny day Main Street party with Andrea enjoying a cold beverage with Milton, the scientist, while Michonne continued to give the townsfolk her stinky eye treatment.

The Governor was also having a calm, quiet day in his room, brushing the hair of a young girl and ooking like a normal loving father. When his brush pulled off a piece of the young girl's scalp, we knew things weren't quite "normal." When the young girl walker reacted, the Governor had to restrain her arms and hood her head, while calling her Penny. "Daddy still loves you," he cooed, finally calming her down. Looking out his window, he saw Michonne looking in at him.

After the opening credits, we are back with the group at the prison with Rick still in shock. Hershel deemed the baby healthy but warned that it needed formula soon. Daryl volunteered to go looking and Maggie rode with him. Rick got up, grab his axe and went back inside. No one followed him. Inside the prison, Rick went into a rampaging rage and started hacking at any zombie in his way.

Back at Woodbury, while the Governor was addressing the town, Michonne broke into his home. She found a notebook containing a long list of names with the name Penny underlined. Hearing thumping, Michonne tried to investigate behind a locked door before being interrupted by the Governor, Milton and Merle discussing the power usage by the town party. Milton's experiments had been delayed by the extra load. Michonne had snuck outside and found a gang of walkers locked up. Freeing them, she finally got to show off her katana skills and disposed of all the walkers. Before she even had a moment to enjoy her kills, she got caught.

Back indoors, the Governor started to admonish Michonne for her busybodiness. She confronted him about Penny, but he was non-plussed. He turned it back on her that she wanted to be kicked out. Giving her katana back, the Governor tried to blackmail Michonne into joining his research team before she went Jet-Li on him, took her sword back and aimed it at his throat. Wordlessly, she sheathed her sword and stormed out. Merle came in asking how it went. While amused, the Governor didn't think Michonne was problematic and told Merle to send Andrea over.

Glenn was digging a grave while Oscar and Axel checked the perimeter. Oscar was touched that Glenn considered the group as his family. Glenn and Hershel reminisce about T-Dog.

After the Governor complained to Andrea about Michonne, Andrea tried to talk to Michonne unsuccessfully. Michonne tried to convince Andrea to leave, but after drinking the kool-aid, Andrea was not having any of it.

Inside the prison, Glenn found Rick by following a trail of dead walkers. Rick was definitely not in the mood to rejoin the group outside. Pushing Glenn away, Rick soldiered on.

Outside the Woodbury town limits, Merle, Milton and a couple of other minions came to inspect their walker trap. When Milton couldn't handle a walker properly, it tried to bite but Milton's jacket stopped the bite. Merle was impressed and proceeded to pull out a walker's set of choppers.

Daryl and Maggie stopped at a house with a children's playground outside. Breaking into the daycare, Maggie found some baby supplies. Exploring the house, they caught a possum dinner.

Merle tried to harass Michonne and Andrea on their way out of town but opened the gate for them. Michonne and Andrea had another spat, but in the end Andrea decided on staying. Merle shut the gate behind her while Michonne kept walking without looking back. While Andrea was wallowing in her sadness, the Governor turned on his Bill Clinton-like charms to cheer her up.

Daryl and Maggie returned with baby supplies and the group let Daryl hold and feed the baby. When asked about her name, Carl suggested a list of names from the women who were no longer with the group. Still inside the prison, Rick came into the mechanical room where Lori died. After recovering the fatal bullet, he found an overstuffed walker who was too full to attack. Rick shot it and went Hitchcock Psycho with his knife into the walker.

The party for the Woodbury residents continued into the night in what looked like a Fight Club arena with Merle and a rather fit Woodbury resident fighting each other and the walkers at the same time. Andrea found it barbaric and wanted to leave. So the Governor confided that the danger was staged and that the walkers' teeth have been pulled out. Down in the ring, Merle enjoyed winning his fight while Andrea began to think she made a mistake by staying.

During a quiet moment, Daryl placed a flower on a fresh grave.

Back in the mechanical room, Rick was awoken from his stupor by a ringing phone. He walked over and answered it. Who might be on the other side?

Wes Craven asks, 'Do You Want a Scream 5?'The original Scream served to reinvigorate the slasher genre. Scream 2, though convoluted, did a fine job of carrying on the fun. Scream 3, well... it kind of sucked, and last year's Scream 4 was a bit better than 3. So are you guys up for a fifth?

That's what Wes Craven wants to know as he posted the following to his Twitter account:

“No news on ‘Scream 5′ yet. You guys really want another one?”

There lies the question of the day. So let's flesh things out a bit. In your opinion what could be done to bring the franchise back up to snuff? Or should this sleeping dog remained undisturbed? Let us know in the comments section below, and we'll pass your thoughts on to the powers-that-be!

Looking forward to that Child's Play themed video game announced a while back? Well, have we got some bad news for you. There will be no digital Chuck for your buck as Chucky: Wanna Play? has officially been cancelled.

The news comes straight from the developer, TikGames', Facebook page:

"It is with great sadness that we announce the cancellation of this Kickstarter Campaign. For those who have followed Chucky this last week, you know that pledges have been very slow. We built a fun campaign with lots of great goodies, got the word out to as many people as we could, but sadly not enough people loved the concept of a Chucky video game as much as we did. Our sincerest thanks go out to all of you who pledged to Chucky, and we promise no charges will be made to your credit card for this Kickstarter project."

TikGames launched the Kickstarter campaign as a means to raise $925,000 dollars they felt they needed to produce the PC version of the game, with console versions following soon after. In the end the campaign had 19 backers and raised a total of $585. Ouch.

A while back we told you that before Damon Lindelof got his hands on Jon Spaihts' original script for Ridley Scott's Prometheus, it was a far different, more Alien-centric movie. Now you can read it for yourself.

To get started, just scroll down to read Alien: Engineers by scribe Jon Spaihts. Don't know about you guys, but this sounds far more like the flick we wanted to see, if only for the creatures. Instead we got typical Lindelof... a lot of headsy stuff which ultimately goes nowhere.

Director James Wan and Stars Ron Livingston, Lili Taylor, and Patrick Wilson Discuss The Conjuring

$

James Wan, who wowed audiences last year with Insidious, is finishing a new nightmare to deliver unto us titled The Conjuring. During last month's New York Comic Con, Wan and a few of the film's stars chatted with our man Nomad about what we can expect.

The Conjuring is a story from the illustrious career of legendary ghost hunters Ed and Lorraine Warren. The Warrens were called upon to help the Perrons, a family terrorized by a dark presence in a secluded farmhouse. Forced to confront a powerful demonic entity, the Warrens find themselves caught in the most terrifying case of their lives. The Conjuring is brought to us by the Insidious creative team with music by Joe Bishara.

Director Wan spoke about some of the vision and feel of The Conjuring. "So much of the look of the antagonist you don't see, really," Wan said. "I wanted to stay true to the reason why I made this movie, which was classic horror filmmaking. The more you hold back, the more effective it is. So you see shots of her hand or pieces of her feet, and of course, it leads into when you finally reveal what this thing is. It's pretty frightening."

Wan described the tension he tried to build into the film. "It's a creeper," Wan said. "It's a slow burn [that] starts off slow and sucks you into the family situation, and then things start to happen. It's a style of filmmaking that I love where nothing really happens at first, but then the tiniest little thing starts to suck you in... and it sucks you in and it builds to something that is out of control. That's the style of film I like to make."

The Conjuring is set in the 1970's, a detail that Wan loved playing with. "I really wanted to make a movie that was a tribute to the 70's style of filmmaking. People who have seen it have compared it to The Amityville Horror, and to me that's a great thing because that's what I was going for. Ed and Lorraine Warren did investigate the story that went on to become The Amityville Horror, so I wanted to capture the smell of that era."

Patrick Wilson plays one half of the ghost hunting couple, Ed Warren, and he discussed the film being set on the 70's and what he felt made the decade a great setting for horror. "I don't know if it was a social thing coming out of the 60's," Wilson said, "but there's this rise of a lot of these haunting stories. Ed and Lorraine Warren, that's where they hit their stride with the latter part being Amityville, but even up until then they had done hundreds of cases. But it's a much broader issue, not just horror movies but paranormal situations. I’m sure it's got to be some kind of social issue, post-Vietnam, people not knowing what to do."

And Wilson spoke on playing the role of Ed Warren. "Ed was a bear of a guy," Wilson said. "He was a strong man. He had a funny side, too, but when he meant business, he was not messing around. So I did what I could do. Even when he spoke. I want to say it was a dialect, but it's just like... 50's speak. It's old school. He's a working man. That sort of directness really contrasts with Lorraine. I think that's why they were such an interesting couple back in the day, dressing alike and liking a certain style. We tried to put in as much of that as we could."

Director James Wan and Stars Ron Livingston, Lili Taylor, and Patrick Wilson Discuss The Conjuring

Lily Taylor plays the mother of the Perron family, terrorized by a malevolent supernatural force. As the movie rolls on, Taylor is required to don make-up and do some high-intensity physical acting. "It was very physical," Taylor said. "I definitely had to make sure I was in shape because when she gets possessed, she's otherworldly. She can do physical things most people can't. There was weird body movement involved, quick movements, there was spazzing out. There was a lot of stuff... tackling people, running."

Asked how she prepared for the possession scenes, Taylor mentioned watching some exorcism videos. "Unfortunately, I saw a couple of possession videos. It's not fun footage to watch," Taylor said. "Good ol' YouTube, you can find everything on there. I saw some possessions, and they actually helped a lot."

Taylor also had to go through some intense make-up applications for her role. "Three hours of make-up," Taylor said. "It was a fantastic progression. Great make-up. We had these brown contacts that were just enough to deaden my eyes so it just looked like I had the flu... like something was just a little wrong. Then they just made me look like I was sicker and sicker."

Playing the other half of the Perron couple is Ron Livingston. Livingston understands that the connectivity we have today makes creating horror more difficult. In the 70's, isolation was the fearmonger's ally. "It's great, grainy... there's something about those 70's colors, the rust browns," Livingston said. "I was trying to figure that out, what makes it more effective having it that far in the past. But setting the film 30, 40 years in the past really added to it. However, it's not the Almost Famous 70's. It's more like what my dad looked like in the 70's. It wasn't pretty. Flannels and bad hair."

Livingston also feels the realism of the story adds to the fear factor of the film. "I think it accentuates the fact that it's a real life story," Livingston said. "It makes it feel a little bit like it's historical. You watch these murder shows on TV where they go back to some serial killer case, and it's always 20 or 30 years ago."

And what about setting the film in the past made it eerier? "We're so connected now," Livingston said. "Everyone has a cell phone now that they can just whip out and dial 911. There's something about being in the day of when you're out in the county and there's that one phone in the house. It's before answering machines. You're a little more cut off. You're not really sure if the car's going to start."

Livingston feels Wan handled the pace of the film brilliantly, creating an environment of tension and fright that will thrill audiences. "I think he really paced it masterfully," Livingston said. "He does a great device where you've got the family at the house, and that part is really, really creepy and it develops in that old Hitchcock build style. But he cross-cuts it with Ed and Lorraine Warren. It's two different paces, and it does two great things... they're doing lecture stuff to students and showing films of some of their other cases and you're getting scares there and you're seeing how some of the past cases went. So they bring you up-to-speed on who they are and what they do, and it takes all the onus off the family to be explaining things as they go. We can literally not know what the hell is going on for the first act of the movie. And the audience knows actually more than we do, which makes for a really great, really suspenseful experience. You sweat it. There are these seven hapless people in the house who have no idea what's going on, and the audience is like, 'No… Don't go down there!'"

Director James Wan and Stars Ron Livingston, Lili Taylor, and Patrick Wilson Discuss The Conjuring

Look for the film, based upon events described in the book House of Darkness, House of Light: The True Story by Andrea Perron, to open in theatres on July 19, 2013. The Conjuring, written by Chad and Carey Hayes, stars Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Ron Livingston, Lili Taylor, Mackenzie Foy, Joey King, Hayley McFarland, Joe Bishara, and Shanley Caswell.

Synopsis
Before there was Amityville, there was Harrisville. Based on a true story, The Conjuring tells the horrifying tale of how world renowned paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren were called upon to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in a secluded farmhouse. Forced to confront a powerful demonic entity, the Warrens find themselves caught in the most terrifying case of their lives.

Watch the First Clip from Hitchcock

We were already really looking forward to Sacha Gervasi's Hitchcock, starring Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren; and now that the first clip, titled "Shock Value," has arrived, November 23rd can't get here soon enough!

The film, which is billed as “a love story about one of the most influential filmmakers of the last century, Alfred Hitchcock, and his wife and partner, Alma Reville,” takes place during the making of Hitchcock’s seminal movie Psycho. Anthony Hopkins plays Hitchcock, and Helen Mirren stars as his wife. Scarlett Johansson, Danny Huston, Toni Collette, Jessica Biel, Michael Stuhlbarg, James D’Arcy, Michael Wincott, Richard Portnow, and Kurtwood Smith also star.

The project is based on the non-fiction book by Stephen Rebello that tracks how Hitchcock, at the height of his game as a director, decided to make a “lowly” horror movie. No studio wanted to touch it initially so Hitchcock scrounged for financing by himself. The movie, of course, became one of his biggest hits and one of the most influential of all time.

Claudia Lewis, President of Production, and David Greenbaum, Senior Vice President of Production, are overseeing the project for Fox Searchlight Pictures, which opens in select theaters starting November 23rd.

The Walking Dead: Q&A with Michael Rooker (Merle Dixon)

The Walking Dead: Q&A with Michael Rooker (Merle Dixon)Ironically enough, two of the most beloved characters on "The Walking Dead" TV show, Merle and Daryl Dixon, never appeared in the comics; and it's now time for a chat with Michael Rooker (Merle), who describes getting into fighting shape for his character's return...

...and shares the name he coined for his prosthetic apparatus.

Q: It's been a nearly a year since you were on the show. Did you have to do anything to shake the rust off Merle?

A: I had already developed the character in Season 1 so that part was no effort at all. I wanted to lose a little weight, you know, so I concentrated on that kind of thing. Eventually I had dropped maybe 30 pounds. It was good preparation. A friend of mine timed the amount of screen time that I had before this season: It ended up being only about seven and a half minutes! So those minutes solidified that character in every fan's mind. It's pretty damn cool to think that something that just came from the page, this character, Merle, now has a life of its own.

Q: How eager were you personally to see Merle's return?

A: It was brutal! I'm a big fan of the show. It was just like how long are they going to play this out? It's like, "Guys make your mind up, and let's get it on!" Finally they made the decision and I was like, "Thank goodness." It was about time, in my opinion!

Q: Do you keep anything off set that helps you think of Merle?

A: I think it would be fun to have one of Merle's apparatuses just to put in a case and have. It's very cool the way they designed it; it's not like a modern prosthetic. It was designed after something an amputee had around the turn of the century -- a soldier. They found photos and images of this apparatus that this person had built for himself so that he could continue to fight after he lost an arm and have one arm as a lethal weapon. It's like holding your sword in your hand.

Q: What was it like having to act with the stump?

A: It's not a stump; that's little Merle. You gotta watch how you talk about it! It's fitted to my arm. We built it so that it fits like a glove.

Q: You recently mused on Twitter that Merle hasn't gotten any romance on the show...

A: Merle tried. He was wondering why him and Blondie [Andrea] never hooked up. But unfortunately there's not a lot of luck with that right now.

The Walking Dead: Q&A with Michael Rooker (Merle Dixon)

Q: You grew up in Alabama. As one of the Southerners on set, are you a bit of a consultant for all things related to the South?

A: Sometimes my lines are written by an individual who might not be from the South. They are always colloquialized, and it's part of my job to keep it honest and real, and that goes for everything verbally. Say, for example -- it wouldn't be "you guys," it'd be "y'all." Or if they do say "you guys," it'd be with the right accent.

Q: Last time we spoke, we talked about Merle's altercation with T-Dog. Now you're a gladiator! Are you getting to be a pro at stage fighting?

A: No matter how you choreograph, and no matter how well you practice it, there's always going to be bruises and bumps in those scenes. If you're the person taking the beating, you have to sell it. Your body takes a beating just selling it, just flailing around, flipping your head back and forth. All that stuff is very hard on the body, everybody ends up sore. But come on: It's "The Walking Dead"!

Q: What did the writers tell you about Merle going into this season? Has he changed at all?

A: We came in and I had a conversation with all the writers and they sort of gave me basic bullet points about the season, but for the most part everybody is kind of in the dark until the next episode comes out. We just don't know what is about to occur until the script is distributed. It's kind of funny; the writers have their overall understanding as to where they want to go, but then they get ideas from how we play it, and they riff on a little bit of that so that it can literally change the next episode to episode.

Q: Are we going to see anything else like the gladiator scene?

A: Well, I can tell you this: That was an amazing turning point. Goodness, that's a big deal, that scene.

Take a Look at the Trailer for Upcoming Graphic Novel Escape From Jesus Island

It seems like we always need another lesson on the dangers of playing God. It just doesn't get through to us. The new graphic novel Escape From Jesus Island goes even further and tells us why we shouldn't play with God.

Because when attempts to clone Jesus go awry, you know all Hell is going to break loose.

Escape from Jesus Island was created by writer Shawn French with illustrator Mortimer Glum, colorist Peeter Parkker and letterist Rachel Leon. It also is one of the leaders in our "favorite titles of the year" contest, with last year's winner being, of course, Dead Hooker in a Trunk.

To keep current on updates for this project, "like" the official Escape From Jesus Island Facebook page. Check out the brand new trailer for the graphic novel below.

From the Press Release
In 2013 Christ WILL Return. A Lot.

That was the message at Coast City Comicon as Wisdumb Productions premiered the trailer for its upcoming Jesus-cloning horror graphic novel, Escape from Jesus Island. Writer Shawn French (The Wrong House), art coordinator Max Leon and producer Sue Stevens were on hand for the announcement and said their 128-page, full-color tale of terror will be hitting shelves by this summer.

The graphic novel began as a comedy bit French performed back in his stand-up days in the early ’90s. "Twenty years later, I still couldn’t get the story out of my head," French said. "I had originally hoped to shoot it as a feature film, but the story is just so epic that I couldn’t have done it justice on my budget. A graphic novel is the perfect medium to unleash this gleefully blasphemous freak show."

Synopsis
An attempt to clone Jesus eventually succeeds but in the process creates scores of hideously deformed freaks and a twin brother, Damien, who has all of Christ's powers and a very different agenda. When the Vatican hears of Christ's return and sends in an extraction team, all Hell breaks loose in this horror graphic novel.

Dread Central's 2012 Horror Starlets took part in the eighth annual Bowling for Boobies breast cancer charity event and wish to thank those in the horror community and beyond who generously donated to this wonderful cause. Check out some photos from the event!

Culminating on October 21st at Jillian’s Hi-Life at Universal City Walk in Los Angeles, California, with a pink carpet, a night of bowling, and the paparazzi snapping away (see our photo gallery below courtesy of Geza Decsy and Al Ortega), the charity - run by founder Stephanie LaHart of the Busted Foundation - raised over $102,000, with our team (who received awards this year for ‘Most Money Raised’ and ‘Best Team Look’) contributing nearly $25K of that total. As they do each year, the proceeds will directly benefit local Los Angeles women battling breast cancer.

The Horror Starlets were comprised this year of Cerina Vincent (MoniKa, Cabin Fever), Allison Kyler (Chromeskull: Laid To Rest 2), Brooke Lewis (Ms. Vampy, Slime City Massacre), Carlee Baker (The Woman, Femme Fatales), Ashlynn Yennie (The Human Centipede films, Schizm), Sarah Butler (I Spit On Your Grave), Natalie Victoria (DeadHeads), Barbara Nedeljakova (Hostel and Hostel: Part 2) and Kristina Klebe (Rob Zombie's Halloween).

This writer would like to say special thanks to my amazing teammates, our awesome support crew (team photographer Geza Decsy, director of photography Craig Ouellette, makeup artist Margaux Lancaster, editor John Michael Elfers, Christian Ackerman, Miguel Rodriguez and Diana Terranova) for their ongoing assistance, and to our sponsor Dread Central and co-sponsors Monsterpalooza, Dearly Departed Tours, ScreamfestLA, the Viscera Film Festival and FEARnet!

Finally the Danielle Harris-directed slasher flick Among Friends (review here) has found itself some domestic distribution, and you can read on for all of the odds and ends. Dig it!

From the Press Release
Grindstone Entertainment has picked up US rights to Three Little Birds Productions’ Among Friends, the directorial debut of veteran scream queen Danielle Harris (Halloween, The Last Boy Scout), and it will be released by Lionsgate Home Entertainment.

The deal was brokered by Aspect/Chiller CEO Hugh Edwards and Grindstone’s Head of Acquisitions Stan Wertlieb.

“As a longtime fan of Danielle Harris, I eagerly anticipated her directorial debut; and she has really made a disturbing horror statement. One to remember and take note of,” says Wertlieb.

Edwards added, “It’s fitting that after years of being in front of the camera, in a solid string of horror movies, opposite the likes of genre greats such as Michael Biehn, Brad Dourif and Malcolm McDowell, Danielle Harris’ directorial debut feature will get its domestic release with Lionsgate Home Entertainment through Grindstone”.

“We’re excited to be bringing Among Friends to domestic fans through such distinguished companies,” says producer Athena Lobit (The Things We Carry). Writer and star Alyssa Lobit chimes in, “We’ve been on an amazing international festival tour, playing at Sitges, Dedfest, Horrorthon and Lund Fantastisk. What great news to come home to!” Producer and star Jennifer Blanc-Biehn (The Victim, The Divide) says, “I’m so proud to be working with such strong, determined women and happy to present that package through Grindstone/Lionsgate.”

Having wanted to make the jump into the director’s seat for quite some time, Danielle Harris mirrors her team’s enthusiasm: "This is the perfect home for Among Friends, and I'm honored to have such well-respected distributors supporting me on my first feature behind the camera. This is just the beginning of many more to come!”

Among Friends is a horror comedy about a dinner party gone wrong. Set against an 80s backdrop, good times take a dark turn when one in the group hijacks the evening in the name of integrity. Through an attempt to help the others come clean about secret betrayals against one another, it’s revealed who's willing to cut through the bone to expose the truth. Starring Christopher Backus, Jennifer Blanc, AJ Bowen, Dana Daurey, Brianne Davis, Kane Hodder, Kamala Jones, Alyssa Lobit and Chris Meyer.

Shot in 2011, Among Friends is executive produced by Jay Lobit (Three Little Birds Productions) and William Allison (Hollywood Treasures, Inc.). Producers are repped by Jennifer Gray and Elsa Ramo; Alyssa Lobit is repped by Adam Trahan at Artist International Management.
