    Synopsis:
A reimagining of the classic horror tale about Carrie White (Chloë Grace Moretz), a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother (Julianne Moore), who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom.

The quiet suburb of Chamberlain, Maine, is home to the deeply religious and conservative Margaret White (Moore) and her daughter, Carrie (Moretz). Carrie is a sweet but meek outcast whom Margaret has sheltered from society. Gym teacher Miss Desjardin (Judy Greer) tries in vain to protect Carrie from local mean girls led by the popular and haughty Chris Hargenson (Portia Doubleday, Youth in Revolt), but only Chris’ best friend, Sue Snell (Gabriella Wilde, The Three Musketeers), regrets their actions. In an effort to make amends, Sue asks her boyfriend, high school heartthrob Tommy Ross (newcomer Ansel Elgort), to take Carrie to prom. Pushed to the limit by her peers at the dance, Carrie unleashes telekinetic havoc. Brian De Palma’s 1976 film version of CARRIE earned Oscar nominations for stars Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie.

Exclusive: James P. Blaylock Discusses The Aylesford Skull

    $
    0
    0

James P. Blaylock's The Aylesford Skull releases on January 25, 2013. Fans will be able to jump into this 440-page science fiction novel soon, and we recently sat down with the author himself to give readers a more in-depth look into the Steampunk adventure to come.

AMANDA DYAR: During your earlier years, you were mentored by one of the all-time great science fiction novelists, Philip K. Dick. What were some of the most important lessons you learned during this time, and what did it allow you to incorporate into you future novels, including The Aylesford Skull?

JAMES P. BLAYLOCK: It’s often suggested that I (along with Tim Powers and K. W. Jeter) were mentored by Phil Dick. Actually, there wasn’t much mentoring going on. We talked about what we were reading, of course, but rarely about what we were writing. We chatted about cats, growing up, rock music, stereo equipment, cars, food, wine, politics, and a heap of other subjects, but I can remember only one instance when he gave me writerly advice: when he told me that the title of the book I was writing was the worst title he’d ever heard. He was pretty much correct. Also, when I sent my first novel, The Elfin Ship, to Del Rey books, he (and Tim) recommended it to Judy-Lynn del Rey. Excerpts from Phil’s exceptionally cool letter are still appearing on the covers of my books. That being said, I’m aware of having learned a great deal from reading his books. He had a natural ability to make a scene both tragic and funny at the same time, with neither of those things reducing the value of the other. Both seem right; both seem authentic. It’s my idea (not that it’s original with me) that there’s something profoundly true going on there. I was also affected by the interesting notion in his books that the future, even on Mars or Alpha Centauri, would have its roots in the world as we know it today. The characters that people his stories and novels are immediately recognizable. (I like that phrase: “characters that people.”)

They’re employed fixing radios and are having arguments with their spouses, and they get angry at the talking door that won’t open unless they put a nickel in a slot. A character’s air car has a bad carburetor, and the rent money is overdue. He sets out to solve his small problems and runs into Elijah scrounging in a Dumpster. Phil’s books are full of frustrated hopes and simple dreams. I’m happy with all of that, and I find that it’s characteristic of some of my own work. It’s true that I was happy with it before I met Phil or read his books, but there was something essentially convincing about Phil that cemented such things. I hope that makes sense. Does any of that apply to The Aylesford Skull? Sure. Phil died thirty years ago, however, and his influences on me as a person and as a writer are not easily recognizable these days.

AMANDA: It's been two decades since we've seen a Steampunk themed novel out of you, despite you widely being considered one of the founding fathers of the genre. What was the determining factor that brought you back for The Aylesford Skull, and how did it feel to get back to your roots when creating the upcoming release?

JAMES: This one is easy to answer. I always enjoyed writing Steampunk. My second published story, “The Ape-box Affair,” was a Steampunk story. I wrote the stuff for many years before K. W. Jeter coined the term in 1988, and for some years thereafter. My novel The Last Coin, published in the late 80s, reminded me how much I had enjoyed writing The Digging Leviathan several years earlier, a book which was set in the Southern California world I grew up in. I was compelled/inspired to write more books set in California, and so I drifted away from writing Steampunk. Fifteen years later, my brother-in-law gave me a collection of short stories titled Dr. Dogbody’s Leg, by James Norman Hall, of Mutiny on the Bounty fame.

The stories were set during the Napoleonic wars, all of them starting out with a group of seafaring types sitting around a table in a comfortable inn, listening to Dr. Dogbody tell stories. I was crazy for the book, and still am, and I realized that I missed writing Steampunk. I wrote a novella – “The Ebb Tide” – which opened at an inn of my own inventing, and sold it to Subterranean Press. I followed that with another novella of the same sort – “The Affair of the Chalk Cliffs” – and then was convinced by my agent to write a longer Steampunk novel – The Aylesford Skull – which he sold to Titan Books. Just yesterday I finished a third companion novella – “The Pagan God” – and recently I wrote a Gaslamp fantasy for Ellen Datlow’s Queen Victoria’s Book of Spells. Somehow I’ve become a Steampunk writer again, and I’ll no doubt go on writing it until I run out of steam. Sorry.

AMANDA: The Aylesford Skull marks the return of one of your most infamous characters, Dr. Ignacio Narbondo. Why is Narbondo a character you choose to keep coming back to time and time again, and when do you think his tale will reach its epic conclusion?

JAMES:I’m a fan of evil geniuses, and so I manufactured one of my own. Evil geniuses have their ugly fingers in all sorts of pies, so to speak, which makes them particularly useful antagonists. If one tires of the character, one can always pitch him off the cliff at Reichenbach Falls. The thing about Narbondo, however, is that he’s central to the doings in The Digging Leviathan in his way, so there’s evidence that he time traveled to the future.

I can’t pitch him off Reichenbach Falls, then, although I could have him climb aboard a time machine and simply leave town, never to return. We’ll see how the future treats him. In The Aylesford Skull, elements of his past are revealed. He’s fleshed out a great deal and grows as a character. So he’s still in the process of becoming rather than declining. Probably he’ll be around for a while.

AMANDA: Fans won't be able to get their hands on The Aylesford Skull until January 25th, but we'd like you to tell us why fans won't want to pass up on this new novel. What will fans enjoy most about the upcoming release, why should newcomers give your series a chance and what was the most rewarding part of creating The Aylesford Skull?

JAMES:This one is tough. I’ll say quite honestly that to my mind it’s the best Steampunk story I’ve ever written in a number of different ways: in terms of the characters, the plot, and the writing itself. Newcomers to my writing should start with The Aylesford Skull. If they like it, I believe that they’ll like the others. If they don’t like it, then... The most rewarding part of writing the book was in the creation of the characters. I got caught up in the lives of the minor characters as well as the major characters, and I put the same amount of effort into all of them. I find that my best characters become in some way authentic to me. There’s a great drawing of Charles Dickens dozing at his writing desk, dreaming of his characters, who are swirling around his head. I wish I had the skill that Dickens had (as do most writers), but I’ll say that I’ve created a few characters who didn’t pass away when my books fell out of print – characters who are living on today in their imagined world. If they knocked on the front door, I’d know at a glance just who they were. I’d invite them in for a cup of coffee. I came up with a few of those when I wrote The Aylesford Skull. I don’t want to be too specific about this, however. I’m happy with the book for a number of reasons, and I suggest that all your readers buy thirty or forty copies, just to be on the safe side.

First Word on and Trailer for Spencer Estabrooks' The Hunt Short Film

    $

Ever since Lon Chaney, Jr., sprouted a puppy nose and lengthy canines in Universal's The Wolf Man, filmmakers have been penning love letters to the iconic film, and Spencer Estabrooks has now added to that canon with his short The Hunt.

Below we have the film's trailer, a still, word on a possible feature incarnation, and more.

First, though, here's the synopsis for Insurrection Films' eight-minute Canadian short:

An estranged father and son head out into the woods to repair their fractured relationship. Alone and isolated, they encounter something beyond their worst nightmares, but there is nothing a little hunting trip can’t fix, right?

The Hunt stars Chris Potter and Rohan Campbell and features creature design by Bleeding Art Industries.

“We set out to make a film that used zero digital effects,” says director Eastabrooks. “We are fans of old school horror, and we didn’t want our monster looking like something out of a video game. Bleeding Art Industries, based in Calgary Alberta, excelled at this task, and the creatures look phenomenal. We look forward to taking this short film out on the road.”

The Hunt was made possible through support from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and ACTRA Alberta. “This project is a showcase for the Alberta Motion Picture Industry,” continues Estabrooks. “We can make films that people want to see; we just need the opportunity.”

The film will screen at international film festivals in 2013, with a world premiere at Film4 FrightFest in Glasglow, Scotland, and producer Greg Jeffs has feature designs for the project.

“The feature is a direct continuation of the short film,” says Jeffs, who previously produced the zombie short Tasha which Estabrooks directed (see our coverage of that here). “It was created as a proof of concept, and the feature script is really strong. I am greatly appreciative of the boost we gained with Tasha,” continues Jeffs, “which I was able to get on broadcast TV here in Canada, and a TV series is in development.”

As for The Hunt, “It’s straight-up horror,” concluded the producer. “We built a kick-ass suit, stuffed a 4-1/2' tall French-Canadian trapeze artist in it, and had her kick a 15-year-old kid’s ass. It's a fun property that I'm excited to kick off.”

When notorious serial killer JOE CARROLL (James Purefoy, “Rome”) escapes from death row and embarks on a new killing spree, the FBI calls former agent RYAN HARDY (Emmy-nominated actor Kevin Bacon, X-Men: First Class) to consult on the case. Having since withdrawn from the public eye, Hardy was responsible for Carroll’s capture nine years ago, after Carroll murdered 14 female students on the Virginia college campus where he taught literature. Hardy is a walking textbook of all-things Carroll. He knows him better than anyone; he is perhaps Carroll’s only psychological and intellectual match. But the Ryan Hardy who broke the Carroll case years ago isn’t the same man today. Wounded both physically and mentally by his previous pursuit of this serial killer, it’s been a long time since Hardy has been in the field. This investigation is his redemption, his call to action. In contrast to nine years ago, Hardy isn’t calling the shots on this case. He works closely with an FBI team, which includes all-business and tough-as-nails JENNIFER MASON (Jeananne Goossen, The Vow, "Alcatraz") and young, razor-sharp MIKE WESTON (Shawn Ashmore, X-Men).

The team considers Hardy to be more of a liability than an asset. But Hardy proves his worth when he uncovers that Carroll was covertly communicating with a network of killers in the outside world. It quickly becomes obvious that he has more planned than just a prison escape, and there’s no telling how many additional killers are out there. The FBI’s investigation leads Hardy to CLAIRE MATTHEWS (Natalie Zea, “Justified”), Carroll’s ex-wife and mother of the criminal’s 10-year-old son, JOEY (newcomer Kyle Catlett). Close during Hardy’s initial investigation, Hardy turns to Claire for insight into Carroll’s next move. The tension rises when Carroll’s accomplices kidnap his intended last victim from nine years ago. Hardy becomes ever more determined to end Carroll’s game when he realizes that this psychopath intends to finish what he started. The thriller will follow Hardy and the FBI as they are challenged with the ever-growing web of murder around them, masterminded by the devious Carroll, who dreams of writing a novel with Hardy as his protagonist. The reinvigorated Hardy will get a second chance to capture Carroll, as he’s faced with not one but a cult of serial killers.

    Synopsis:
The Host is a riveting story about the survival of love and the human spirit in a time of war. Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact. Most of humanity has succumbed.

When Melanie, one of the few remaining "wild" humans, is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too-vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

When outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off on a dangerous and uncertain search for the man they both love.

Teaser Trailer, Stills, and More for Dr. Frankenstein's Wax Museum of the Hungry Dead

Scorpio Film Releasing has unveiled a teaser trailer, early details, and a few photos from its upcoming 13th feature - Dr. Frankenstein's Wax Museum of the Hungry Dead - and we have everything you need to know right here!

    From the Press Release:
Scorpio Film Releasing, the Rhode Island-based production company behind such genre hits as Nun of That and The Disco Exorcist, are at it again, nearing the end of production on their 13th feature film production: Dr. Frankenstein's Wax Museum of the Hungry Dead. A celebration of horror and the genre's greatest personalities, Dr. Frankenstein's Wax Museum of the Hungry Dead is a terrifying, often funny experiment in terror introducing actress Jamie Lyn Bagley as Katherine and starring Michael Thurber (Murder University) in a new and twisted take on the sadistic Dr. Frankenstein. Dr. Frankenstein's Wax Museum of the Hungry Dead is directed by Richard Griffin from a script by Seth Chitwood and Griffin.

Dr. Frankenstein's Wax Museum of the Hungry Dead follows a group of teenagers who spend the night in a creepy wax museum in Salem, Massachusetts, only to find out that it's the secret lair of Dr. Frankenstein, who has been performing profane experiments on the town residents to create... piece by piece... the ultimate nightmare.

Director Richard Griffin says, "For my thirteenth feature, I decided to go back to my roots and make a small, atmospheric, Euro-tinged horror film in the vein of one of my idols, Jess Franco. I was so lucky to find this amazing location (Count Orlok's Nightmare Gallery) in Salem. My co-writer, Seth Chitwood, and I rapidly produced a screenplay in just a few days... and just a couple of weeks later we were on set and shooting! So far, the shoot has been a dream. The cast and crew are just amazing... and every day our talented FX artists are creating blood-soaked nightmares that I know the audience will just eat up!"

Bagley adds, "It's been a blast! Such positive energy from everyone on set. I want to do this every day. It's been my lifelong dream to be in a horror film, and I am so thrilled to live the dream!"

Thurber, who portrays Dr. Frankenstein, explains that this has been "absolutely the most fun I've had so far with SFR!! Could not be more excited to just get to the set!!"

Dr. Frankenstein's Wax Museum of the Hungry Dead also stars Jesse Dufault (Murder University), Shannon Hartman, Johnny Sederquist, Aurora Grabill (The Disco Exorcist), Patrick Keeffe (Murder University), Aaron Peaslee (Murder University), Christopher Ferreira (The Disco Exorcist), Nat Sylva (Murder University), Ryan Hanley (Murder University), Beatriz Lopez, Andre Boudreau (Nun of That).

B-Sides: This Power Ballad Is a Shocker

    $

Ah, the soundtrack to Wes Craven’s Shocker - truly the B-Sides gift that keeps on giving. It wouldn’t be the most metal 80’s horror movie soundtrack without a hard rockin’ hair band power ballad. Every rose has its thorn; just like every sword had its stone; or something like that.

I can’t say I’m too familiar with the band Bonfire. All these long-haired hard rock bands from the mid-to-late 1980’s blend together after a while. “Sword and Stone” was originally recorded by Kiss for their Crazy Nights album but didn’t make the final cut and now can only be heard as an unreleased demo. The song then got passed on to Bonfire, and having heard both versions, I’d say the Bonfire version is vastly superior.

This power ballad covers Shocker’s romantic aspect. You remember how Peter Berg’s girlfriend gets murdered by Horace Pinker; she comes back as a ghost that lives inside his memories and they somehow live happily ever afterlife, or something like that. Damn, Shocker is one seriously goofy movie. If only My Soul to Take had a bitchin’ soundtrack like this.

“I am the sword and you are the stone.”

But wouldn’t that mean I am waiting for someone more deserving to pull me away from you where I am trapped and useless? I think they might have gotten their metaphors screwed up on this one. Regardless, it’s a good, sadly overlooked song that will probably be stuck in your head for the rest of the day.

Here’s Bonfire’s original music video for “Sword and Stone”, something I didn’t even know existed, probably because I didn’t watch enough of “MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball” growing up.

New Poster for Wake Before I Die Comes With a Warning

Fans of religious horror, keep your eyes on Todd and Jason Freeman's Wake Before I Die, a feature length film adapted from the novel My Soul to Take by their pastor father Dale Freeman. Check out the trailer and a new poster from artist Tom Hodge at The Dude Designs - and Fear Thy Neighbor!

Wake Before I Die was written and directed by The Brothers Freeman. It stars Robert McKeehen, Audrey Walker, Cheyenne Canfield, Elijah Nelson, Nouel Riel, Michael J. Prosser, Joshua St. James, Benedict Herrman, Victor Morris, Danny Bruno, Robert Blanche, Adrienne Vogel, Trish Egan, Betty Moyer, and Josiah Nelson. Robert Blanche produced.

This was the first film that we shot in 2010," says Todd on the film's website. "Jason and I adapted the screenplay from our dad’s book My Soul to Take. Later that year we shot The Weather Outside, written and directed by Jason, and Cell Count, written and directed by myself. A lot of our inspiration for WBID was from Val Lewton as well as the films of Roman Polanski. After working with Tom Hodge on the Cell Count and The Weather Outside poster, we knew he was the man for the job. His style [and] knowledge of genre marketing throughout the ages are without question the best in the business.”

The Brothers Freeman's Wake Before I Die

    Synopsis:
After moving his family to a small Northwest town, Pastor Dan Bennett begins to suspect that all might not be as idyllic as he first imagined. Strange spiritual obsessions begin to unearth age-old secrets, and personal threats await anyone who dares confront them. He realizes he must not only prepare his new congregation to face the assault but also fortify his own home as evil seeks to invade and shake it to its very foundation.
