First Trailer Arrives for Eli Roth's Hemlock Grove

We've been a little skeptical about Eli Roth's sliver of original programming for NetFlix, "Hemlock Grove," but after watching the trailer, yeah, we feel much better. Check it out, and let the waiting officially begin.

Eli Roth's "Hemlock Grove" stars Famke Janssen, Bill Skarsgard, Landon Liboiron, Lili Taylor, Kandyse McClure, Freya Tingley, Dougray Scott, Aaron Douglas, Tiio Horn, and Penelope Mitchell. It's a Gaumont International Television production.

Written by Brian McGreevey and Lee Shipman based on McGreevy’s Gothic horror novel, "Hemlock Grove", consisting of 13 one-hour episodes, revolves around the murder of a young girl found close to the former Godfrey steel mill. The suspects in her killing include Peter (Liboiron), a 17-year-old Gypsy kid from the wrong side of the tracks, and Roman (Skarsgard), the arrogant Godfrey scion, whose sister, Shelley, is disturbingly deformed and whose mother, Olivia (Janssen), is the beautiful and controlling grand dame of Hemlock Grove. Scott plays Norman Godfrey, the older brother of Olivia’s late husband, JR, one of the founders of the Godfrey Center for Biomedical Technologies. Wealthy, but with modest tastes and an equally modest home, Norman is sickened by Olivia’s displays of ostentation and the way in which she spoils her son. Horn portrays a Gypsy witch-prostitute whose confidence games are a mask for dark supernatural abilities.

To celebrate this digital release, ATLUS is hosting a World Tendency Event for one week starting today and ending on 1/14/13, setting the servers to Pure White. Unprecedented in its depth and subtlety, peerless in its relentlessly challenging gameplay, Demon's Souls is the ultimate action RPG.

About Demon's Souls
King Allant the XII, the last king of Boletaria, searched tirelessly to expand his might. Still unsated, he returned again to the Nexus, where he foolishly awakened the Old One from its eternal slumber. This long forgotten evil, now wrought upon Boletaria, plunged the realm into darkness and fog. A mighty demon horde poured into the kingdom, devouring the souls of men.

Champions from other realms learned of Boletaria's fate and sought to deliver the kingdom from evil; none would return from the cursed land. Called upon by a mysterious maiden in black, you go forth, the last hope for humanity in a place lost to demons and darkness... Demon's Souls is rated M for Mature by the ESRB.

We're all waiting breathlessly for Legendary Films' new take on Godzilla to start stomping, and the good news is we're getting close. So close that some new details have hit the interwebs that give us an idea of where the plot is going.

CHUD reports that the promotional arm of Warner Bros. just wrapped a webinar detailing their upcoming slate for advertisers. Most of it [was] fluff, though a few things regarding WB/Legendary’s upcoming Godzilla reboot got [CHUD’s] source's attention. In the meeting the following was 100% confirmed:

  • The film will feature more than one monster, confirming that two new monsters will also be wreaking havoc – this in addition to the big green guy.
  • Warner Bros. made it clear that their interpretation of the material “follows the story of a solider” and is “way different” than the Toho Godzilla films.
  • The site goes on to say that even when Frank Darabont does his rewrite of the script, the above factoids will still remain intact. The film will be directed by Monsters helmer Gareth Edwards and has been dated for a May 16, 2014 release. Stay tuned for more.

Altered States of PlaineWe love reporting stories like these about indie features that find success. Read on for the details of what's coming up for Nick Gaglia's Altered States of Plaine.

Nick dropped us a line yesterday with the following update on his film: Since its world premiere in Brazil last May, Altered States of Plaine (or rather Estados Alterados de Plaine) has taken Latin America by storm! After playing at Fantaspoa - International Fantastic Film Festival in Brazil, Macabro Film Festival in Mexico, Buenos Aires Rojos Sangre Film Festival in Argentina, Post Mortem Film Festival in Mexico, and Montevideo Fantastico Film Festival in Uruguay (where it won a screenwriting award), the indie feature has been picked up by Turner Broadcasting and will be making it television debut starting this summer all over Latin America.

Filmmaker Gaglia (visit his official site here) was approached by a Turner exec in Porte Alegre, Brazil, immediately after the film's world premiere screening at Fantaspoa. This marks the first time a film at Fantaspoa has sold directly because of playing at the festival.

In addition, he was invited back to Brazil to present Altered States of Plaine at the 2013 World Social Forum in Porto Alegre and will be there from January 26th-30th.

Shot in four countries including France, Italy, Switzerland, and the US, Altered States of Plaine is a sci-fi tinged psycho-drama about a young man on the run from a mysterious government agency who is desperate to find a cure for a condition that causes him to wake up at random places around the world when he falls asleep. The film stars George Gallagher (Over the GW, Aaron Bacon) as the film's protagonist, Emanuel Plaine, and Kether Donohue (The Bay, Pitch Perfect) as Violet, a girl Emanuel rescues from being killed, who in turn helps him get his life back together.

Put together by an A-list crew consisting of editor Alex Hammer (who just won an MTV VMA award for editing Beyonce's "Countdown"), cinematographer Jon Fordham, sound designer Anthony R. Milch (Batman, Superman, Tron), sound mixer Andrew Kay (Emmy winner), and composers Jon St. James (Grammy nominee) and Marc Ribler.

Gaglia is also currently developing the story into an hourlong television series.

He sent us a few new stills from the film to share, which are below, and for more info visit the Altered States of Plaine Facebook page.

Several Horror Actresses Join the 5th Annual 'Kick Up Your Heels' Charity AuctionHave you ever wanted to step into the shoes of one of your favorite scream queens? Then by all means keep reading because we have the lowdown on the "Kick Up Your Heels" auction supporting the Lancaster Opera House Theatre program for arts for children and teens.

Horror actress Brooke Lewis ("Ms. Vampy,"Slime City Massacre) dropped us a line to let us know about the Lancaster (New York) Opera House's 5th Annual "Kick Up Your Heels" online auction, which began January 2, 2013. All money raised by event will go toward the programming and development of children's workshops. A worthy cause if we've ever heard one!

Brooke told us, "When I was invited last year by the Kick Up Your Heels charity event to donate a pair of heels to support the Lancaster Opera House Theatre program for arts for children and teens, I was completely moved and excited! As Ms. Vampy, you know how committed I am to supporting tweens and teens; and as an actress, I believe that all young people should have an opportunity to be creative and express themselves. Theatre arts was a huge emotional outlet for me as a kid, and I want to give that to someone else. Plus, who better to donate high heels than me? Ask Sean Decker - I even wear high heels when we do Dread Central's Horror Starlets Bowling for Boobies every year!"

Other horror personalities participating this year include icons like Adrienne Barbeau and Gillian Anderson, Kat Graham of "The Vampire Diaries," Lisa Zane, Jessica Cameron, Brittany Snow, Ashley Palmer, Georgina Rylance, and "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch" herself, Melissa Joan Hart.

Toby Whithouse and Phil Davis Talk Season 5 of Being Human (UK)

    $
    0
    0

With Season 5 of the hit UK series "Being Human" preparing to return to BBC3, the new issue of SFX magazine has a big spread on the show, and we have some highlights right here provided by creator Toby Whithouse and Phil Davis, who portrays the series' new big bad, Captain Hatch.

The new season will be comprised of just six episodes, but the finale (written by Whithouse) promises to be a doozy. He said, "This one has cameos from two guests from last year… no, Mitchell isn’t coming back, because he’s dead. And so are George and Nina! We’re not only told what Captain Hatch’s plan is but we see it played out, in some of the biggest setpieces we’ve ever done. And the end will leave you guessing. There will be much discussion about the end…”

As for Hatch himself, “I’m one of those rare actors who comes out of make-up looking far worse than when he went in!” Davis jokes. “They blacken my teeth, paint veins on my forehead and put earwax dripping out of my ears – it’s a pretty disgusting sight. He’s described as ‘a little angry fist of a man’ to start with, but as he gets more powerful, he becomes more relaxed and urbane.”

“It’s a brilliant performance,” Whithouse enthuses, “imbued with such presence and danger, and that effortless evil that Phil does so well. I wrote it, but I’m genuinely chilled by some of the stuff he does. And he’s not afraid of making himself look ghastly. Hatch goes through a transformation as we get towards the end, but up until that point Phil was happy to make himself look utterly rancid!”

“It’s like slipping into a pair of shoes,” explains Davis. “Sometimes they fit immediately, and sometimes you have to wiggle your toes a bit. But this was pretty easy to get the hang of. It was irresistible, because it’s so well-written. He’s very clever and very funny. He kills people with a smile on his face – or persuades them to kill themselves. I want the audience to enjoy his evil and be scared of him at the same time. I want them to be laughing and then stopping dead.”

    Series 5 Synopsis:
Hal, Tom, and Alex are three housemates with some serious issues on their hands. Hal (Damien Molony) is a 500-year-old vampire, Tom is a hardened werewolf (Michael Socha), and Alex (Kate Bracken) has recently had the misfortune of becoming a ghost. Strapped to a chair in the living room, Hal is finding it tough going cold-turkey – mostly because the mess Tom has made is really bothering him. But when Tom and Alex release Hal, they’re not to know it’s far too soon to be letting a bloodthirsty vampire onto the streets… When Hal recruits Crumb as a vampire and welcomes him to the supernatural world, the meek becomes mighty and we see what happens when a bullied man finds his bite. Meanwhile, Rook – head of a shady government department in charge of keeping the supernatural world secret – is given some devastating news.

Steven Spielberg's Robopocalypse Gathering SpeedSometimes to get things right, it takes time. The act of rushing to get anything done rarely turns out okay, and no one knows this more than an experienced filmmaker like Steven Spielberg, who is in no big rush to make his way toward the Robopocalypse.

According to Deadline, Spielberg is going to push back Robopocalypse, the giant science fiction pic that he was scheduled to direct this spring for Fox and Disney through DreamWorks. The good news is hr is not dropping out of the project; he just didn’t want to rush an expensive film and wanted more time to work on it.

Based on the Daniel H. Wilson novel and with a script by Drew Goddard, Robopocalypse was to star Chris Hemsworth and Anne Hathaway and concerns a battle for survival after mankind generates its first mass intelligence computer brain only to see it escape.

    Godzilla vs. The Ex-Producers

Well, you can't say you didn't see this one coming, can you? Word has come that the mighty Godzilla is ready to do battle on an all-new playing field... our country's courtrooms! Read on for details.

Deadline reports that Legendary Pictures today filed suit against producers Dan Lin, Roy Lee and Doug Davison to have them removed from the Godzilla reboot. The company also wants the court to order arbitration to stop a potential temporary restraining order by the defendants against the film’s production. “This dispute…concerns Defendants’ assertion that they are entitled to substantial producing fees and backend compensation on the Film,” claims Legendary in the suit.

In court documents Legendary claims that it brought the trio on board soon after acquiring the rights to the Godzilla character from Japanese corporation Toho in March 2010. Legendary say that Lin, Lee and Davison had nothing to do with that deal and have no ownership or underlying rights to the giant monster or movies about him. In late 2012 Legendary told Lin, Lee and Davison that they would not be engaging them as producers on the Gareth Edwards-directed reboot.

That’s when things really started to go bad. Hopefully this will all get cleared up soon and everybody can get back to business.

The Texas Big Mouth Massacre - Texas Chainsaw 3D Sequel Talk Premature

Texas Chainsaw 3D is a strange animal. Everything about the flick is wonky and weird, and we guess in some way that's kind of appropriate. In any event don't get too revved up about a sequel yet, kids, as there's more to the saw. No idea what that "more to the saw" means, but it sounded cool.

Yesterday Deadline announced that Texas Chainsaw 4 was on the way, which is befuddling in and of itself as there are several sequels, one remake, and one prequel already; however Texas Chainsaw 3D was said to be a direct sequel to the original, really making it Texas Chainsaw 2 so a sequel to that would have been Texas Chainsaw 3 and not Texas Chainsaw 4, but we must remember that this new series is also home to a 40-year-old character portrayed by a 26-year-old hottie. Where was I? Oh yeah...

Today the rights holders for the film, Carl Mazzacone and executive producer Mark Burg, stepped in to say that there's been no progress on a possible sequel as of yet and that Millennium Films' Avi Lerner never should have made that announcement.

"Millennium simply sold the foreign rights, and they will not tell us when a sequel is ready to be made," says Burg. "The script was developed by Carl, myself and writer/director John Luessenhop. Millennium and about ten producers came aboard only when we needed their check. Maybe they’re looking for something to sell at Berlin, but they have no right to announce this sequel, and if we make another, it has to be as good or better than this one and that takes time."

Look for more soon, and in the meantime read our Texas Chainsaw 3D review here in case you missed it.

Texas Chainsaw 3D is directed by John Luessenhop from a screenplay by Adam Marcus, Debra Sullivan and Kirsten Elms. Dan Yeager, John Dugan, Bill Moseley, Alexandra Daddario, Sue Rock, Tania Raymonde, Scott Eastwood, Gunnar Hansen, Tobe Hooper, Paul Rae, Keram Malicki-Sánchez, Ritchie Montgomery, Trey Songz, Marilyn Burns, Shaun Sipos, Thom Barry and Richard Riehle star.

    Synopsis
Texas Chainsaw 3D continues the legendary story of the homicidal Sawyer family, picking up where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic left off in Newt, Texas, where for decades people went missing without a trace. The townspeople long suspected the Sawyer family, owners of a local barbeque pit, were somehow responsible. Their suspicions were finally confirmed one hot summer day when a young woman escaped the Sawyer house following the brutal murders of her four friends. Word around the small town quickly spread, and a vigilante mob of enraged locals surrounded the Sawyer stronghold, burning it to the ground and killing every last member of the family – or so they thought.

Decades later and hundreds of miles away from the original massacre, a young woman named Heather learns that she has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she never knew she had. After embarking on a road trip with friends to uncover her roots, she finds she is the sole owner of a lavish, isolated Victorian mansion. But her newfound wealth comes at a price as she stumbles upon a horror that awaits her in the mansion’s dank cellars…

According to Deadline New Line Cinema is moving forward with the cult classic Y The Last Man, setting Dan Trachtenberg to direct the film. The helmer, with a commercials background, put himself on the map after generating his own trailer for a faux movie based on the video game Portal.

"Jericho" writers Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia have penned the script.

The comic, created by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, centers on Yorick, an escape artist who is the last survivor of a mysterious plague that has killed every male mammal in the world. With his pet monkey, he sets out to find what might have wiped out the world's male chromosomes.

The project has been long in development at New Line and came close to taking off in an incarnation with a script by Carl Ellsworth and D.J. Caruso attached as director.
