Second Trailer for Interactive Dutch Horror Film APP

Second Trailer for Interactive Dutch Horror Film APPThe second trailer for the innovative smartphone-driven Dutch horror flick APP has arrived, and even though there are no English subtitles, you can rest assured that screaming is understandable in any language! Check it out!

This new terror flick will be the first film in the world to synchronize a parallel storyline via app content to be accessed while in the movie theater.

While the sight of glowing smartphone screens is often infuriating and distracting, it will be reappropriated as a necessary component of the APP moviegoing experience, as codes and cryptic texts that the film's heroine receives will also appear on audience members' small screens throughout the theater.

Music video director Bobby Boermans is directing the film from a script by Robert A. Jansen. Whether or not Boermans will be the sole "director" of the second-screen application to accompany the film is unclear. The director and Jansen collaborated last year for the thriller Claustrofobia.

APP will hit theaters in the Netherlands in February 2013.

Synopsis
In the thriller APP, Anna (Hannah Hoekstra), a young student, gets caught up in her own virtual world. She is addicted to apps, social media, and her smartphone. One day Anna discovers a mysterious new app on her phone. It has the answer to every question. Not just scientific questions, but also about her personal life and her friends. When the app starts sending her cryptic texts and codes connected to the sudden and strange deaths of people around her, it becomes evident that it is not just a handy app.

Kate Winslet on the Verge of Joining DivergentAnd the quest to mine every young adult novel as a means to find the next Twilight Saga or Hunger Games continues. What's next on tap for those of you looking for a little sappy with your scares? Read on!

Variety is reporting that Titanic's Kate Winslet is in talks to join the cast of Neil Burger's adaptation of Veronica Roth's Divergent. If signed, she'll join the previously announced Shailene Woodley. Summit remains on the lookout for its male lead as of press time.

The studio is eying a film trilogy; it acquired the novel in March 2011, shortly after which Burger ( Limitless ) beat out a slew of helmers to land the coveted gig. The story has a futuristic, Hunger Games-like teen-on-teen violence setting and follows 16-year-old Beatrice Prior, whom Woodley is set to play. It is unknown what part Winslet would play in the film.

Look for Divergent in theatres March 21, 2014.

Book Summary
In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves... or it might destroy her.

Guest Blog: Artist Max Fiumara Shares His Process for B.P.R.D.: 1948

B.P.R.D.: 1948 Issue #5 hits store shelves on February 20th, and artist Max Fiumara provided us with a few sketches and notes on his process of designing one of the comic's monsters, the iconic B.P.R.D. HQ, and more.

Click each of the below sketches to see them bigger and in more detail.

Design of the Roc:
I designed this monster bearing in mind that the scenes where it appears are in the plain desert of Utah during daytime, so I added that fur over the creature to somehow hide it and make it more mysterious in its definition.

Layouts, Pencils, and Inks of Pages 15, 16, and 17 of B.P.R.D.: 1948 Issue #1:
For Page 15, I had to design a variation of the establishing shot of the iconic B.P.R.D. HQ in Connecticut. The trick here was that I needed to show those gates out front, and I needed to show more of the ground level of the building never seen before, which wasn’t an easy task.

Guest Blog: Artist Max Fiumara Shares His Process for B.P.R.D.: 1948

On the Hellboy Design:
I've had the pleasure of drawing Hellboy in my recent one-shot The Transformation of J.H. O’Donnell, which featured the adult version of Hellboy. Now, in 1948, I am playing with him at the age of 4, but as Hellboy grows fast, his design needed to look as a 12-year-old HB, even older than Gabriel Ba’s version in 1947. It was a lot of fun to work on those designs! I was a little intimidated at first, but Mike [Mignola] and all the B.P.R.D. crew gave me their blessing! I’m having a lot of fun with this book; hope fans dig it as well.

Must See Mama Movement Video

For now at least Mama is the number one movie in the United States, and the folks behind it should be very proud of themselves. Though the CGI-laden spirit we saw as Mama up on the screen bothered some, we dug it. I mean, after all, no human can move like that, right? Wrong.

Below you'll find a new video featuring Javier Botet's motion test that illustrates how Mama came to life. The filmmakers used traditional prosthetic/make-up work with the addition of CGI hair to achieve the look you see in the film. Seriously, this person needs to be in every horror film from now until the end of time. You cats have got to see this!

The only thing creepier is this video of Charles Manson.

Read our Mama review here!

Synopsis
Five years ago, sisters Victoria and Lilly vanished from their suburban neighborhood without a trace. Since then, their Uncle Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his girlfriend, Annabel (Jessica Chastain), have been madly searching for them. But when, incredibly, the kids are found alive in a decrepit cabin, the couple wonders if the girls are the only guests they have welcomed into their home.

As Annabel tries to introduce the children to a normal life, she grows convinced of an evil presence in their house. Are the sisters experiencing traumatic stress, or is a ghost coming to visit them? How did the broken girls survive those years all alone? As she answers these disturbing questions, the new mother will find that the whispers she hears at bedtime are coming from the lips of a deadly presence.

We've got some quick distribution news right here for you, kids, straight from the dark swirling abyss of goodness that is IFC Midnight. On tap for you right now are release dates for both Would You Rather and that odd little doc based on The Shining, Room 237.

Look for David Guy Levy's Would You Rather, starring Brittany Snow, Jeffrey Combs and Sascha Grey, on February 8th in limited release and VOD.

Synopsis
In the wake of her parent's death, Iris struggles to make ends meet while caring for her terminally ill younger brother. Shepard Lambrick, a seemingly philanthropic aristocrat, expresses an interest in helping them. When he invites her to an exclusive dinner party, she accepts. Also attending the dinner party are seven more desperate individuals. They soon find themselves trapped in Lambrick's mansion and forced to play a sadistic game of Would You Rather, where the winner will be awarded untold amounts of money. As the game progresses, the dilemmas Iris and the other players face grow increasingly deadly.

Would You Rather Make a Date With IFC in Room 237?

Look for Rodney Ascher's Room 237 in limited release and VOD on March 29th.

Synopsis:
After the box office failure of Barry Lyndon, Stanley Kubrick decided to embark on a project that might have more commercial appeal. The Shining, Stephen King’s biggest critical and commercial success yet, seemed like a perfect vehicle. After an arduous production, Kubrick’s film received a wide release in the summer of 1980; the reviews were mixed, but the box office, after a slow start, eventually picked up. End of story? Hardly. In the 30 years since the film’s release, a considerable cult of Shining devotees has emerged, fans who claim to have decoded the film’s secret messages addressing everything from the genocide of Native Americans to a range of government conspiracies. Rodney Ascher’s wry and provocative Room 237 fuses fact and fiction through interviews with cultists and scholars, creating a kaleidoscopic deconstruction of Kubrick’s still-controversial classic.

The Shining's Cut Epilogue Shines On

0

Every now and again someone digs up a long lost relic pertaining to Stanley Kubrick's horror masterpiece The Shining, and each time it happens, what we see leaves us grinning from ear to ear. Kind of like the way Nicholson did in his "Heeeere's Johnny!" moment.

Website The Overlook Hotel has just released some script pages and even some continuity Polaroids from the excised alternate ending of the flick. According to the site, Kubrick’s co-screenwriter on The Shining, Diane Johnson, had this to say about the deleted epilogue:

"Kubrick had filmed a final scene that was cut, where Wendy and Danny are recovering from the shock in a hospital and where Ullman visits them. Kubrick felt that we should see them in the hospital so we would know that they were all right. He had a soft spot for Wendy and Danny and thought that, at the end of a horror film, the audience should be reassured that everything was back to normal."

Very little remains of the hospital epilogue beyond some continuity Polaroids, costumes, and 35mm film trims housed in the Stanley Kubrick Archive.

Check out the Polaroids below, and click here for the script pages.

Based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel, Kubrick’s tale of a family man and would-be writer (Nicholson) going mad as winter caretaker of the cursed Overlook Hotel is a seminal work of the genre. Kubrick’s film has been described as a masterpiece of modern horror and is widely considered to be one of the most terrifying movies ever made. However, at the time of release both Kubrick and lead actress Shelley Duvall were nominated for Razzie Awards for the film.
