Exclusive: Being Human's Sam Witwer on Aidan's Addiction, Losing Everyone He Loves, and Lots More

Exclusive: Being Human's Sam Witwer on Aidan's Addiction, Losing Everyone He Loves, and Lots MoreSyfy's "Being Human" is officially in its third season with more twists and turns than the scariest roller coaster ride, and Dread Central recently got to talk one-on-one with some of the amazing cast from the show as a supplement to the Q&A's we recently posted.

First up is Sam Witwer, who plays the hunky but not glittery vampire Aidan Waite. Read on to learn more!

AMANDA DYAR: Obviously, Season 2 of "Being Human" ended with Aidan stuck in a precarious situation with some unfinished business with Mother. Would you have liked to see the two characters meet one final time during the new season, and how do you think that confrontation would've gone down had it happened?

SAM WITWER:Well, on one hand that might have been nice. It also might have been violent, and I don’t know if that’s ultimately satisfying. Last year I pushed for Aidan to get his psychological licks in before they locked him in the coffin… That line about, “You killed the only person who ever loved you.” I think with that we’ve probably gotten all the revenge we needed, even if we think we want more. And she dies shortly after. Most likely in misery.

For Aidan’s evolution as a character, having him come out of the coffin, planning to tear her head off, and then to learn that she’s dead, I think that leaves the character off balance, yet in a place where he has room to ask some interesting questions of himself. And in the [third] season you’ll see that.

AMANDA: As Season 3 of the show begins, things are looking pretty grim for Aidan's blood brothers. How do you believe Aidan would react to becoming the last of his kind if the virus were to kill off all vampires but him? Also, with the virus spreading, will it allow Aidan to cope with the recent sad moments of his life by realizing everything happens for a reason?

SAM: The virus – It ain’t a good thing. We’ve barely scratched the surface here. This is a story that lasts. So here you have this guy who’s trying to go clean and hates his old "drug buddies," the vampires. He goes under for a year and a half and comes back, and they’re all dead. It’s a “be careful what you wish for” situation because while that particular demographic is very harmful to his development, they’re also the only people on the planet who truly understand what he’s going through, and there are many that he cared about!

Take Bishop. He’s gone… And while there were scenes of animosity between Bishop and Aidan, I think it’s very clear that these two men cared very much for each other. It’s the same thing here but on a cultural level. There was shame there, but there was also comfort and familiarity and family.

As for coping with loss, that, too, lasts all season. I’m very happy to say that. Not because I wanna see the poor guy suffer, but because this character is about loss, and how fascinating might it be to go to the very center of that. I really shouldn’t say more. This is an important season for my character. Just wait.

AMANDA: Aidan has seemingly the worst luck of any characters on "Being Human" with some of the saddest parts of his life coming in bunches during his time as a vampire. Do you see any event that could make the character reach a breaking point and give up on his nice streak?

SAM: That’s always a danger with this guy. He’s a recovering drug addict. Sure. That is where we focused out attention in Season 1. Well, he’s also (figuratively and literally) a soldier back from war. How does something like that change you? How do you even attempt to re-assimilate into civilian life? It would be so much easier to be the person he’s been trained to be rather than the man he was… or wants to be.

What’s wonderful about that tension is that it plays out to maximum effect around “civilians.” And when I say “civilians” in the context of our show, I suppose I mean human beings. Last season he was around vampires. This season it’s all human all the time.

Exclusive: Being Human's Sam Witwer on Aidan's Addiction, Losing Everyone He Loves, and Lots More

AMANDA: With the numerous vampire films and television shows around today, do you feel any added pressure to make Aidan stand out above all of the other bloodsuckers? What do the writers and you bring to the character of Aidan to make him distinguished in the crowded horror and supernatural genres?

SAM: I don’t watch those shows so I really couldn’t tell you. I just try to inhabit the character honestly and with as much craft as I can bring to it. With the exception of the mythology of my show, I really don’t know much about vampires beyond Bela Lugosi or maybe Christopher Lee…

How our show stands out, I would think, is that (especially this year) it’s far more interested with issues like, “How do we pay rent?” or “Dude, your girlfriend moved in? Were you gonna ask me?!” The show is called "Being Human" after all. My character is a drug addict; we happen to call him a vampire. We’re not trying to make a supernatural show. We’re making a show about some lonely people who have only ever wanted to live normal lives. That’s the heart of it.

Look for more from the cast of "Being Human" soon, and be sure to tune in next Monday, February 4th for Episode 3.04, "I'm So Lonesome I Could Die." All images courtesy of NBC Universal, Inc.

Axeman at Cutter’s Creek Set Visit Report, Exclusive Image Gallery, and Update

In the fall of last year we ventured into the mountains just outside of Big Bear, California, to the set of then-filming feature Axeman at Cutter’s Creek and while there chatted with many of the flick’s principal players.

Kicking things off in our set visit coverage is an interview with actress Elissa Dowling.

Written and directed by Joston Theney, Axeman at Cutter’s Creek stars Dowling (Black Dahlia), Tiffany Shepis (Nightmare Man), Brinke Stevens (Skeleton Key), Ray Trickitt (Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers) and Arielle Brachfeld (The Haunting of Whaley House). With the marketing tag "Get ready for a vacation to be dismembered," it revolves around nine vacationing twenty-somethings who are hunted by the titular axe-wielding local legend. The cast of Axeman is rounded out by Chantelle Albers, Jamie Bernadette, Erin Marie Hogan, Eliza Kiss, Dylan Hobbs, Stephen Eith, J. Scott, Carlos Javier Castillo, Paula Tracey Wilson, Dave Hernandez and NBA superstar Scot Pollard as the Axeman.

Arriving to the remote locale in the late afternoon after a few wrong turns amidst thunder, lightning, rain and falling rocks, we were greeted by Theney (who also produces), who directed us to the log cabin at the top of the road, which pulled triple duty as base camp, lodging and location.

“Go fast up the hill,” he advised us, swatting at the cloud of gnats which swarmed him. “It’s steep, and if you go slow, your wheels will spin.”

Taking his advice, we conquered the dirt track without a problem and, upon entering the cabin, were greeted by Dowling, Brachfeld and Bernadette, who had arrived a day before their call in order to reconnect. Cocktails were offered, and with the mood rather boisterous, Dowling and I sat down outside on a picnic bench to escape the din in order to chat about her Axeman role of Stacy, a former collegiate track star who finds herself at odds with the childhood friend she’s always known and loved.

After bumming a cigarette (we hoped in vain that the smoke would deter the myriad insects from nipping at our flesh), Dowling told us, “I met Joston, believe it or not, on MySpace so it’s been a long time! Six years later out of the blue I get a message from him on Facebook that he’s doing this film, and I was like, ‘Hell, I’ll do it!’ He got things together pretty quickly after that, and here I am.”

Of her character, “It’s interesting,” said Dowling, who has racked up dozens of vampish roles in a slew of genre films. “I never get to play an athlete because I’ve never been an athlete. I’m generally more of the Goth chick that scoffs at the cheerleaders so it was interesting because I’m playing an athlete in this.”

So what did she do to prepare?

“I walked a lot,” she laughed, “and I kept looking at my ass and asking, ‘Is it firm?’ And it is! So I’m okay! To be honest, I know what athletes are like. They take it really seriously so I’m trying to approach it that way. I mean, I used to be a ballet dancer, which I hated, but I can kind of sort of relate. I can still lift my leg over my head! But it was hard. Your toes bleed. I’m lucky I don’t have crazy feet now. But I think my character is more of an ex-athlete who still keeps up. And I have an interesting relationship with one of the characters, Cassidy [actress Albers]. "It’s like A League of Their Own, like Kit and her sister, Dottie. Competition is so important for this character, and I’m not normally like that at all. I’m the girl that generally helps everyone out and is super nice to everybody, and I’m not competitive. But with this character, she tries to become Cassidy and take over so she’s kind of nasty in that way.”

“I’ve definitely met a lot of that type of girl,” continued the actress, “[those] that feel they need to take each other down to get ahead so I know what they are like. I’ve had it happen to me so many times, and I can see the signs. I think we are better off by helping one another. But this character is the opposite of that, and I think that she kind of regrets it. There is a complex relationship between them. The funny thing is that the actress who plays her, we’ve become great friends since the script readings. Chantelle is an absolute sweetheart, but I have to not look at her like that when we start shooting.

“So yeah, I wanted to do something different,” she furthered of her attraction to the project. “And plus the cast. Anytime I get a chance to work with Shepis, then I am there because I love hanging out with her, and I never get to see her. We are bunking up in the cabin tonight, and I’m going to molest her once she falls asleep because she’s so hot. Working with Brinke attracted me, too. She is such a sweet, sweet soul! I worked with her on Joe Hollow’s Disciples, and that was the last thing we did together. So really the cast sold me, and plus the script was cool. It’s fun! It’s a funny movie, and I think it will keep people entertained because of the comedic elements, too.”

We asked Dowling about the level of that comedy.

“It’s not like overdone,” she replied, “but there a lot of funny things that happen, and the way the characters relate is funny, too. It’s definitely an homage to 80’s slasher films, and that’s another thing... I love slasher films. And I’m not going to pass on a great slasher film shooting in Big Bear! The killer is really tall so that always works, and he’s got an axe so that’s good, too! Those two things usually go over well with the audience. Apparently Suzi Hale and the FX team have done a lot of work in pre-production so there’s going to be a lot of blood. I’d give the script’s gore quotient a ‘ten.’ Blood, gore, lesbians, and people die!”

As for the status of Blood Red Films’ Axeman at Cutter’s Creek, filmmaker Theney informed us recently that he’ll be screening exclusive scenes from the flick in Cincinnati, Ohio, at HorrorHound Weekend this March 22-24, where he’ll be appearing with Dowling, and that a trailer for the film and release information is forthcoming.

Stay tuned for more, and to stay up-to-date in the meantime, be sure to "like"Axeman at Cutter’s Creek on Facebook.

“’The Dead Files’ is an engrossing program that is incredibly popular with our viewers,” said Andy Singer, GM, Travel Channel. “As the audience journeys with Steve and Amy, each location provides a fascinating glimpse at haunted America and the opportunity to experience the country from a whole new perspective.”

Season Four begins in Egg Harbor City, NJ, where one couple’s home has turned from a cozy fixer-upper into a living hell. Despite making renovations, “dark feelings” intensified and manifested into unexplained voices, shadow figures and an overwhelming sense of being watched – frightening both the couple and their five-year-old son. As the team attempts to help the family, DiSchiavi discovers the house was previously the site of a suicide and next to a former sanatorium that saw its share of death. When Allan makes contact with the spirits, she discovers something far more dark and frightening.

Additional locations this season include a house in Browns Summit, NC, where haunted activity is adversely affecting one family’s health; a childhood home in Wabash, IN, that has taken on paranormal activity since it was rebuilt after a mysterious fire; the former home to a murderous mobster in Rock Island, IL, that’s ridden with unexplained shadows and noises; a Watervleit, MI, home overcome with aggressive activity that terrorizes its inhabitants; a 19th century mansion in Buchanan, VA, with dark secrets; and two haunted hotels – the Occidental Hotel in Buffalo, WY, and The Amargosa Hotel & Opera House in Death Valley, CA, both of which are rapidly losing business due to terrified guests.

“The Dead Files” is produced by Painless Entertainment, Inc., for Travel Channel. For Painless the executive producer is Jim Casey, and the co-executive producers are Ross Kaiman and Rob Rosen. The executive producer for Travel Channel is David E. Gerber.

The CW has released a pair of new promo posters for the second half of "The Vampire Diaries" Season 4, and all we could think at first was, "Wow, Elena and Rebekah sure had a bad hair day!" followed immediately by, "Where the hell is Damon?"

TV Guide posted the artwork, and we definitely agree with their conjecture that if you look closely at "Elena" in poster #2, it seems to actually be her doppelganger, Katherine. We can only hope as if there's one thing this season could use, it's an appearance by fan favorite Katherine!

Lifetime Gives Witches of East End a Series Order

Witches of East End Gets a Series Order on the Lifetime NetworkWitches are hotter than ever right now, and Lifetime is jumping on the bandwagon by giving a series order to "Witches of East End," starring Julia Ormond, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Rachel Boston, and Madchen Amick.

Per Deadline, the ten-episode series, produced by Fox 21, will premiere later this year. "Witches of East End" was one of four hourlong pilots Lifetime ordered last summer. Patrick Heusinger and Daniel Ditomasso play brothers Dash and Killian Gardiner.

Based on Melissa de la Cruz’s best-selling novel, "Witches of East End" centers on the adventures of Joanna Beauchamp (Ormond) and her two adult daughters, Freya (Dewan-Tatum) and Ingrid (Boston), both of whom unknowingly are their family’s next generation of witches. Amick stars as Joanna’s mischievous witch sister, Wendy. “This is one of the most exciting ensemble casts we’ve seen, and the whole show is fresh, original, and just right for Lifetime,” Lifetime’s EVP Rob Sharenow said.

Maggie Friedman ("Eastwick") wrote the pilot, which was directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls), and will executive produce "Witches of East End" with Erwin Stoff () of 3 Arts Entertainment.

    Novel Synopsis:
The three Beauchamp women--Joanna and her daughters, Freya and Ingrid--live in North Hampton, out on the tip of Long Island. Their beautiful, mist-shrouded town seems almost stuck in time, and all three women lead seemingly quiet, uneventful existences. But they are harboring a mighty secret--they are powerful witches banned from using their magic. Joanna can resurrect people from the dead and heal the most serious of injuries. Ingrid, her bookish daughter, has the ability to predict the future and weave knots that can solve anything from infertility to infidelity. And finally, there's Freya, the wild child, who has a charm or a potion that can cure most any heartache.

For centuries all three women have been forced to suppress their abilities. But then Freya, who is about to get married, finds that her increasingly complicated romantic life makes it more difficult than ever to hide her secret. Soon Ingrid and Joanna confront similar dilemmas, and the Beauchamp women realize they can no longer conceal their true selves. They unearth their wands from the attic, dust off their broomsticks, and begin casting spells on the townspeople. It all seems like a bit of good-natured, innocent magic, but then mysterious, violent attacks begin to plague the town. When a young girl disappears over the Fourth of July weekend, they realize it's time to uncover who and what dark forces are working against them.
