UPDATED: What's in the Box?!? Mystery and Intrigue Arrive at Dread Central!

$

Show people with an abundance of geek cred a sealed box of any size, and if they're worthy of their Batman underoos, they'll shout, "What's in the BOOOXXX!?!" with a pained expression on their face. If they are totally committing to the madness, perhaps you'll see a little drool.

I'm not even going to tell you what that line is from because if you don't know, you don't belong here!

Today a sweet little box showed up in a plain brown envelope with stamps touting Freedom and Liberty and no other markings to speak of. The box was tied with a golden bow in such a way that you could pull one end and it slips open without a fuss. WHO KNOWS HOW TO TIE BOWS LIKE THAT??!! Only Satan, I'm sure.

Suffice to say, it's smart to stay on your guard when opening a nondescript box from an unmarked envelope labeled for Dread Central. As I tugged on the bow, I sort of held it at a distance. Clearly, this is some new viral fun from an upcoming horror movie, but you never know if an overzealous intern who hated my review of Silent Hill: Revelation got to pack the boxes. I can almost hear him sobbing as he went about his nefarious deed muttering, "The fucking bunny was in the video game!! It was important!!"

Anyway, the bow came undone without any blood spray or strange activated skittering from within the box. I popped the top and undid a second little black bow. Under a slip of yellow tissue paper was a small silver key... certainly the type someone finds in a slow burning creepy flick that later unlocks a door to unspeakable horror. No markings. No inscription. Just a little sort of old-timey key on a thin silver chain.

MYSTERY!!

Dive into the comments below and help us figure out what the fuck is going on here and what this key may open. If we don't unravel this one... surely... there will be another box in the near future....

UPDATE: Evan Dickson dropped us a line to let us know that the key has something to do with the upcoming film Stoker. Something.... BUT WHAT?!?! You can see from the one-sheet below one of the characters is wearing it. Look for the flick in theatres on March 1st, 2013.

Synopsis
After India’s (Wasikowska) father dies in an auto accident, her Uncle Charlie (Goode), whom she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her emotionally unstable mother (Kidman). Soon after his arrival, she comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives, but instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless girl becomes increasingly infatuated with him.

Cult Season 1We're not sure how Matt Davis' fans from "The Vampire Diaries" are going to react to "Cult" when it premieres in a few weeks, but hopefully they'll like it as much as we do! Check out the show's opening sequence courtesy of The CW.

"Cult" Episode 1.01 - "You're Next" (airs 2/19/13, 9-10 pm)
MATT DAVIS OF “THE VAMPIRE DIARIES” STARS IN A NEW DRAMA — Investigative journalist Jeff Sefton (Davis) has learned to live with his younger brother Nate’s (guest star James Pizzinato “Alcatraz”) relentless string of obsessions, especially his latest rant that a hit TV show called “Cult” intends to harm him. When his brother mysteriously disappears, Jeff enlists Skye Yarrow (Jessica Lucas; Cloverfield, “Melrose Place”), a young research assistant working on “Cult,” to help with his investigation into the dark underworld of the TV show and its rabid fans.

Meanwhile, in the parallel worlds of the show-within-a-show, the cult’s ruthless leader, Billy Grimm, is played by actor Roger Reeves (the double role of Billy/Roger is played by Robert Knepper (“Prison Break,” “Shameless”), a man whose primary agenda is winning back his former follower and lover, Kelly Collins, played by actress Marti Gerritsen (the double role of Kelly/Marti is played by Alona Tal (“Supernatural,” “The Killing”). Since escaping from the cult, Kelly has become an LAPD detective who finds herself drawn back into an investigation of the group’s activities as she struggles to keep Billy at a safe distance. As the television show grows in popularity, cast members Roger and Marti begin to feel the effects in their “real” lives.

Jason Ensler directed the episode written by Rockne S. O’Bannon.

Gareth Evans is back in the director's chair for the sequel to his badass flick The Raid: Redemption, which is known as Berandal, and now we have the first official stills and more!

From the Press Release
PT Merantau Films and XYZ Films announce the start of production for THE RAID 2 (Indonesian title, THE RAID 2: BERANDAL), the sequel to the wildly popular international hit THE RAID (aka THE RAID: REDEMPTION). The film reunites writer/director Gareth Huw Evans with actor Iko Uwais, who will be reprising his starring role. Ario Sagantoro is producing for PT Merantau Films, along with Nate Bolotin, Nick Spicer, Aram Tertzakian and Todd Brown for XYZ Films. Executive producing are Rangga Maya Barack-Evans and Irwan D. Mussry.

In addition to Uwais, the international cast includes Tio Pakusadewo, Putra Arifin Scheunamann, Julie Estelle, Alex Abbad, and Roy Marten. The film is currently lensing in Jakarta, Indonesia, and is scheduled to shoot for over 100 days. Line producing the film is Daiwanne Ralie with Matthew Flannery and Dimas Imam Subhono serving as directors of photography.

Picking up right where the first film ends, The Raid 2 follows Rama (Uwais) as he goes undercover and infiltrates the ranks of a ruthless Jakarta crime syndicate in order to protect his family and uncover the corruption in his own police force.

The Raid premiered at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival, where it took home the Audience Award in the Midnight Madness section. It went on to play at Sundance and SXSW before enjoying a theatrical release in the United States through Sony Pictures Classics. The film is approaching $15M in global box office.

“We’re incredibly excited to start the next chapter of The Raid story,” said XYZ Films. “Gareth introduced a rich and fertile world in the first film, and we’re eager to see him expand on that vision with Berandal.”

“To all our fans, thank you so much for your support. We can't wait to come back and show you what we have been working on,” said writer/director Gareth Evans. “We'll be there in 2014 with a film bigger, better, and bloodier! Wish us luck.”

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions (SPWA) acquired the film for the United States, Spain, Latin America, and South Africa; and Sony Pictures Classics will once again release the film theatrically in the United States.

Resident Evil May Get a Reboot To Die For

$

Many fans were outraged at the storyline and gameplay of Resident Evil 6 and many voiced their thoughts to Capcom. Capcom is now taking into consideration that the franchise may in fact need to return to its roots or get a brand-new reboot altogether.

Capcom’s Masachika Kawata stated, "I think that it’s important for us to have users’ needs in mind when making the games. At the same time I think what a lot of what people want now is to have Chris and Jill in a game, or they want it to look like Resident Evil used to look like. That’s what makes the game work for them. We should be able to start from scratch and reboot it. It would still be Resident Evil. We wouldn’t lose the essential nature of what makes it a good game just by changing the characters.”

What does this mean for the Resident Evil franchise? Could a reboot bring it back from the depths of hell where it was almost lost forever? I believe we have gotten way too caught up in today's modern technology and are losing site of what really use to matter in games. Horror titles use to drag you into the middle of the chaos and have you scratching and clawing to get out of the terrifying world before you. When a franchise loses the ability to truly scare its players then can it really call itself a horror video game? Now is the time to save your game, because we are now returning to our first checkpoint dated 1996 in order to get this shit right!

Visit the official Capcom website to learn more. And read IGN's Resident Evil Will Return To Its Roots article to hear more of what Masachika Kawata had to say on the subject.

Gris Grimly Sets the Record Straight on Pinocchio

Earlier this morning we reported that things were looking grim for Guillermo del Toro and Gris Grimly's Pinocchio. However Gris just wrote in to clear the air a bit.

"I want to clear up the rumor that was started due to misconstrued information that I posted on my networks," Grimly tells us. "Pinocchio is indeed kicking and has interest from the studios. Although, I thought it could be quiet for a little while, I never thought it could be canceled. It's just too good."

So it appears as if the project is just on the old back-burner for now. That's a far cry from not happening. Good stuff.

Exclusive: Chad Michael Murray Talks The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia and More

$

Today Tom Elkins'The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia (review) arrives on VOD and in limited theaters. Starring Chad Michael Murray, Katee Sackhoff, Abigail Spencer, and Emily Alyn Lind.

Ghosts of Georgia follows the Wyrick family after they move into a historic Georgian estate only to find out that their not the only residents living on the property and the ethereal habitants are none too happy about their arrival.

Dread Central recently had the chance to catch up with Murray on the phone to discuss his involvement with the sequel and heard more about what attracted him to the role of a young father whose forced to deal with a wife and a daughter who both have very special abilities. Murray also chatted about his experiences meeting the real-life family that Ghosts of Georgia is based on and caught us up on other projects he has on the horizon including Fruitvale which just nabbed a slew of major awards during the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.

Read on for the highlights from our exclusive interview with Murray and look for The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia now that it's available on VOD and in limited theaters nationwide.

Dread Central: Can you talk a bit about what attracted you to this project and playing Andy?

Chad Michael Murray:You know, I really liked the script and Tom and also, it was really great to have an opportunity to play a father of a grown child which is something I've never done before. I really enjoyed that aspect to play in this family environment and to play this really normal guy- a Southern guard who has a somewhat unhealthy family that he has to be there for. The role really had a great dynamic to it.

Dread Central: You mentioned the unhealthy family aspect to Ghosts of Georgia; can you talk about how Andy fits into this world considering both his wife and daughter can communicate with ghosts, leaving him sort of the odd man out?

Chad Michael Murray:Yeah, I would say that I'm pretty much the only sanity in this sort of outlandish world which definitely makes me a bit of an observer throughout at lot of the story. He's really the one keeping them all together and I think it was hard on Andy to see his family struggle like they did especially since he really couldn't do much except just try his best to keep them safe.

Dread Central: I know both Katee and Emily mentioned in their interview that they were able to meet the real Wyrick family- did you get to meet them too? And if so did meeting them inform your performance at all?

Chad Michael Murray:I did get to meet everyone but Andy about midway through filming; I really wish I could have met them before we started shooting but it just never worked out. So yeah, I never did get to meet Andy because he was kind of aloof and just stayed away from all 'this.' And he also sadly passed away about a year ago too so all I really had to go on were some of the stories the family shared with me about Andy and from what they told me, he was a funny guy but really standoffish too so that's how I tried to play him in the film.

Dread Central: You're having a pretty incredible winter with Ghosts of Georgia coming out now and with Fruitvale doing so incredibly well at Sundance a few weeks ago now. Would you say that this feels like a new chapter in your career- as you mentioned you hadn't been offered these more 'mature' roles before so it does seem like your transitioning into some new territories now.

Chad Michael Murray:Oh absolutely; I think that's what great about being an actor is that you're always challenging yourself by taking on new roles. I think doing the same thing for too long is boring- you have to continue to challenge yourself and evolve if you want to continue to improve and grow as a performer.

When I left the show ("One Tree Hill"), I just wasn't in love with it anymore; I didn't have that passion for it anymore and so I took some time off just to study and do stuff I really loved again so now, that passion is back. I think I love acting more so now than I ever did before so now that I've gotten some great opportunities like this movie or Fruitvale, it's just fantastic. I really just want to continue to do things that fulfill me and that keep people entertained.

And I always want to continue doing new stuff with each and every project; I just finished filming a project in Atlanta with Tyler Perry which was a totally different experience than I'd ever had before- and I got to play a dad again so that was cool. I also recently did a comedy called Cavemen that's going to be out soon in which I play a really darkly comedic role which isn't something I had really done before. And I think that's really what drew me to working with Ryan (Coogler) on Fruitvale; it was a totally different opportunity for me to do something really unexpected and we also had Forrest Whitaker involved which was really cool too. It's amazing to see how everyone responded to it at Sundance- I'm really, really lucky, that's for sure.

Synopsis
From the producers of The Haunting in Connecticut comes the chilling true story of the Wyrick family. When Andy Wyrick moves his wife, Lisa, and daughter, Heidi, to an historic home in Georgia, they quickly discover they are not the house’s only inhabitants. Joined by Lisa’s free-spirited sister, Joyce, the family soon comes face-to-face with a bone-chilling mystery born of a deranged desire… a haunting secret rising from underground and threatening to bring down anyone in its path.

Warm Bodies Roundtable Interview with Co-Star Teresa Palmer

$

0

Out today is Jonathan Levine's Warm Bodies (review), a delightfully funny zombie romance flick that follows a zombie named R (Nicholas Hoult) who happens to fall in love with a young girl named Julie (Teresa Palmer) after eating her boyfriend's brains during a zombie attack.

Of course, Julie can't help but begin to fall for her unusual suitor and as the two grow closer, this triggers a reaction in R, slowly bringing him back to life and forever changing what the human race originally believed about the undead left roaming the post-apocalyptic world.

During the recent press day for Warm Bodies Dread Central had the opportunity to chat with Palmer during a roundtable interview with the Australian actress who discussed her involvement with the project.

Question: Can you talk about how it felt to play a strong female protagonist in Warm Bodies since there doesn't seem to be a lot of those kinds of roles in the genre world?

Teresa Palmer:I just loved it! I'm not always a fan of the damsel in distress, I like the empowered woman, a strong woman, and that's the reality of my own life because all the women I know in my own life are very strong and can take care of themselves. And certainly Julie can too; she can shoot a gun and defend herself and I love that she's feisty enough to try and escape her situation a few times rather than just sit there and wait for help. I loved that.

Question: Was it challenging at all having to play opposite a zombie for most of the film since he can't really communicate all that well?

Teresa Palmer:Well, I thought it would be a challenge because R really doesn't get to express himself and so Julie is doing all of the talking so I was really worried about finding the chemistry and finding the rhythm of the scenes because I didn't really have anyone to bounce my dialogue off of. But Nick Hoult is such a gifted actor that he was really able to emote almost everything just through his eyes; I mean, his eyes are so expressive and his little subtle choices with his facial expressions and his body language actually meant that I had SO much to work off of then in the end because I could respond off of all of his little moments.

Question: Was it hard at all working alongside the CGI creatures- the Boneys?

Teresa Palmer:Nah, not really; they were guys in motion capture suits so it was almost more hilarious than anything else really. But I do have to say that Jonathan Levine was very much about grounding this story in reality and the way that he did that was just every single day on set he was making sure that the production design was perfect and was just very particular about all the details really. We shot at an abandoned airport in Montreal and the whole place was just decked out as if there really was a zombie apocalypse. All of our zombie extras had make-up and were really on set, there was no digital zombies in that sense at all and I think all made this a really wonderfully authentic feeling story.

Synopsis
A funny new twist on a classic love story, Warm Bodies is a poignant tale about the power of human connection. After a zombie epidemic, R (a highly unusual zombie) encounters Julie (a human survivor) and rescues her from a zombie attack. Julie sees that R is different from the other zombies, and as the two form a special relationship in their struggle for survival, R becomes increasingly more human - setting off an exciting, romantic, and often comical chain of events that begins to transform the other zombies and maybe even the whole lifeless world.

As years go by, Hunter and his devastating story evolve into a local legend, a myth that many consider to be just that, until a group of partying teenagers accidentally find themselves trapped in a brutal fight for survival… with a legend bent on vengeance!

The DVD will feature an audio commentary, a “making of” retrospective, outtakes, and a Hello Cleveland music video for “Lost Here Forever.”

Exclusive: Being Human's Meaghan Rath on Sally's Loneliness, Second Chances, Finding Love and Much More

Exclusive: Being Human's Meaghan Rath on Sally's Loneliness, Second Chances, Finding Love and Much MoreSyfy's "Being Human" is one of the best shows on TV right now, and in this exclusive interview we talk with co-star Meaghan Rath to get the supernatural scoop on what lies ahead for the lonely but sexy ghost turned re-animated corpse Sally Malik.

AMANDA DYAR: Sally is easily one of the most interesting characters from the entire cast of "Being Human" as she gets to connect to a whole world the other characters can't fully comprehend. What is your favorite aspect of playing Sally on the show, and what would you change about the character if given the chance?

MEAGHAN RATH:Really what I love most is the fact that Sally's storyline is limitless. The mythology of the spirit world hasn't really been explored on television or in movies in the same way that vampires and werewolves have been. Our writers can really push the world of this character in a way that's creative and imaginative, and I love how mystical these situations turn out to be. The one thing I would change about Sally is actually something that is changing this season. Sally needed to become a woman. She needed to take responsibility for her actions, to make a change. She died as a victim, and three seasons later, she isn't one anymore. This season, we are starting to notice that she's grown up quite a bit. And yes, she makes mistakes, but she absolutely learns from them now. I admire that. She is brave; she takes enormous risks and pushes forward. She is more self-aware, conscious of how her actions affect other people. It's huge growth from Season 1.

AMANDA: In the beginning of Season 3, Sally makes her way out of Limbo and back to the world of the living as a human once more (or so it appears). How does this change your approach to the way you play the character now, and what do you think the future holds for Sally on "Being Human"?

MEAGHAN:My approach has been similar. What we try to accomplish on the show is playing against type. We are not playing the archetypes of a vampire, a ghost, a werewolf. We are playing them as real people with real problems. So who Sally is as a re-animated corpse really is the same person as she's always been. Except she's a lot happier, obviously. Sure her situation changes, she evolves, she is different as a result of the experiences she's had over the last three seasons; but if anything, her personality needs to be closer to what it was when she was truly alive than that of the walking dead.

The future is full of possibilities for Sally. Where she is at the end of the season is shocking, to say the least, and I can only imagine what could possibly become of her.

AMANDA: After the catastrophe that ended Sally and Danny's relationship, is there any chance of Sally getting romantically involved with anyone else now that she has become human once again? Also, how will Sally react as time goes on to being given a whole new chance at life in the new season?

MEAGHAN:There is absolutely a chance for Sally to find love. A primary affliction she was dealing with as a ghost was loneliness. For so long she longed for a companion, for touch, for connection. The idea of a whole new life, a life completely separate from the one she had the first time around, seems overwhelming and scary at first. Stressful. Especially because she runs the risk of running into someone from her past (and consequently killing them). But Sally starts to realize that she is incredibly lucky. NO ONE is ever given another chance at life, and she really begins to take advantage of that, trying to live it as full as she can. She is grateful. Her arc is beautifully written.

AMANDA: Obviously, being human has its limitations, and after being a member of the spirit world for so long, Sally may long to recapture some of her former power. In what ways will we see Sally pursue her former undead life and her connection with the world of the supernatural?

MEAGHAN: Well, Sally still retains a connection with the supernatural. She can see ghosts (because technically she is still supernatural herself- she is not really human, she is a re-animated corpse). She also lives with Aidan and Nora, who are still supernatural. In her mind the advantages of being alive far outweigh the powers she had as a ghost. She does not pursue her 'after life'. The only thing I will hint at is the fact that she will soon realize she isn't invincible- physically or emotionally.

Look for more from the cast of "Being Human" soon, and be sure to tune in next Monday, February 4th, for Episode 3.04, "I'm So Lonesome I Could Die." All images courtesy of NBC Universal, Inc.
