Orlando Jones and Katia Winter Losing Their Heads for Sleepy HollowNow we don't know about you guys, but when it comes to possible actors being cast for a new TV show based on the classic Washington Irving tale featuring the headless horseman, the first name that immediately springs to mind is Orlando Jones. Right?

Deadline is reporting that Jones (pictured; numerous irritating roles) and Katia Winter ("Dexter") have been cast in "Sleepy Hollow," Fox’s drama pilot. Jones will play Lt. Frank Williams, the serious and sternly professional detective transferred to Sleepy Hollow to investigate a double homicide. Swedish actress Winter will play Katrina, Crane’s wife and a nurse with the 37th Regiment in the Revolutionary War.

The series was created by Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci (writers of "Fringe,"Transformers, and Star Trek) with Underworld director Len Wiseman on board to direct.

In the script, Ichabod Crane is described as a captain in the Revolutionary War who has been to hell and back. The former history professor finds himself catapulted to present day Sleepy Hollow, where he's indicted for the murder of a police officer and forced to prove not only his innocence but make a wary detective believe he's a traveler from the 18th century.

Some quick DVD news has come in for two new titles from IFC Midnight, Hellgate and In Their Skin, and we have the artwork and the skinny on what you need to know. Look for both titles on March 12, 2013.

On a visit to Bangkok, American Jeff (Cary Elwes, Saw, The Princess Bride), his Thai wife Sua and their son Kyle are hit by a truck as they drive to the home of Sua's father. Jeff awakens from a coma six weeks later and learns that Sua and Kyle did not survive the crash. He also discovers he is able to see the specters of people who have died horribly. Seeking peace of mind, Jeff is led to a spiritual adviser (Oscar winner William Hurt, A History of Violence, Into the Wild, Kiss of the Spider Woman), who explains that these souls are trapped in a shadow world, forced to relive their own deaths for eternity - and that Jeff's family is facing the same fate. In order to save them, he must pass into the shadow world and set their souls free, without losing his own to the demons within. Haunting, tense and thrilling, writer-director John (Zyzzyx Road) Penney's HELLGATE, an IFC Films theatrical release, is an unforgettable journey to the other side. It was named Best Film at the Bram Stoker International Film Festival and Best Horror Film at Italy's Fantasy Horror Awards.

IFC Midnight Brings Hellgate and In Their Skin Home in March

After a tragic family accident, Mark (Joshua Close, The Exorcism of Emily Rose) and Mary Hughes (Selma Blair, Hellboy, Storytelling) retreat with their son to the family's vacation home in the woods. They are wakened early the next morning by their new neighbors, Bobby and Jane Sakowski (James D'Arcy, Hitchcock, An American Haunting, and Rachel Miner, Sons of Anarchy, Bully), who invite themselves over for dinner. What begins as merely an awkward evening turns sinister as Bobby's questions become intrusive and his envy of the Mark and Mary becomes more aggressive. As matters escalate, it becomes clear that there's no limit to what Bobby will do to get what Mark has, and ultimately the Hugheses' will to survive will be put to the test. An Official Selection at the Tribeca Film Festival, and an IFC Films theatrical release, IN THEIR SKIN is a "gripping" (A.O. Scott, The New York Times) home-invasion thriller in a league with such modern classics as Funny Games and The Strangers, featuring mesmerizing performances that get under the skin.

Doctor Gash's Top 10 Greatest Horror Movies... EVER! #7 - Frankenstein

$
0
0

Film #7 on Doctor Gash’s Top 10 Greatest Horror Movies… Ever! is a classic that was censored and scrutinized in its day for scenes of blasphemy and violence against children.

That’s right, today we may think of Frankenstein as just an old black and white monster movie, but upon its release in 1931, this movie was shocking.

#7-Frankenstein
Henry Frankenstein: Look! It's moving. It's alive. It's alive...It's alive, it's moving, it's alive, it's alive, it's alive, it's alive, IT'S ALIVE!
Victor Moritz: Henry - In the name of God!
Henry Frankenstein: Oh, in the name of God! Now I know what it feels like to be God! "

We’ve been completely numbed to the power of Frankenstein. We’re hyper-exposed to The Monster as a cute, smiling Halloween staple, a clown (Herman Munster) and a character in children’s books (Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich by Adam Rex, for instance) and kids' movies (Kevin James' character in Hotel Transylvania and Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas is a female version of The Monster…and that is just two off the top of my head). But let's consider how this film was received when it was released over 80 years ago.

We can’t be swayed by what The Monster has become but rather simply remember what he is. He is a jigsaw corpse pieced together from random bodies, driven by a demented criminal brain, and reanimated by a mad scientist. The Monster is completely lost in a world that is foreign to him. He's tortured and cast aside by his creators…and then the monstrosity is unleashed upon the public with horrific results.

Doctor Gash's Top 10 Greatest Horror Movies... EVER! #7 - Frankenstein

Although society’s main image of the Frankenstein Monster is undoubtedly cartoonish and fun, we must remember that upon its release, this film was considered so extreme it was actually censored in some parts. You have to remember this was 80 years ago and the sections that were removed from some prints of the film could air on prime time network television these days, but at the time, they were intense. Fans of the film will not be surprised to learn that the most scrutinized scene was the one involving The Monster throwing young Maria into the lake when he misunderstood the game they were playing together. On some prints of the film the entire second half of the of that scene, from when The Monster realized he no longer had flowers to throw into the water, through the end was cut.

More surprising is the scene when Henry Frankenstein actually brought the creature to life. He became extremely excited and proclaimed, “Now I know what it feels like to be God.” As John Lennon learned, comparing oneself to a popular deity usually doesn’t go over very well with the general public. There was an uproar over that line in the film and in many prints it was drown out with a large thunderclap. Other scenes that were cut at times were Fritz’s sadistic glee while torturing The Monster with a torch and the actual needle injecting The Monster while the doctor was subduing him. Pretty tame stuff by today’s standards, but at the time some places considered too much for the public to handle.

As for the main characters, the maniacal nature of Dr. Henry Frankenstein (Colin Clive) fuels the emotion of the film, but the true strength is in the performance of Boris Karloff as The Monster. Rarely in the history of cinema has anyone delivered such a memorable performance without ever uttering a single intelligible word. Karloff does a brilliant job of conveying anger, fear, confusion and hate, without verbally expressing anything more than grunts and growls. And director James Whale did a legendary job directing the iconic film.

Perhaps the most thrilling moment in the film comes when the doctor pulls the cover away and reveals his creation underneath. Remember, all of us were already very familiar with the Frankenstein Monster before viewing this film, but can you imagine the reaction of audiences originally seeing Frankenstein who had no idea what to expect. You have to envy them. Certainly make-up artist Jack Pierce needs to be credited here, as he was the one who designed the ‘flat-head’ look to The Monster (Pierce also worked on Karloff’s Mummy and Lon Chaney’s Wolfman. Certainly an impressive pedigree).

As far as influential horror films go, perhaps no movie can claim a bigger role than Frankenstein. With shocking imagery and brilliant performances this classic no doubt deserves its place among the greatest horror films of all time.

Scanners, one of the most iconic horror films of the Eighties from legendary director David Cronenberg (Cosmopolis, A History of Violence, The Fly), is heading to Blu-ray for the first time in a highly collectible limited edition steelbook thanks to Second Sight Films.

From the Press Release:
The cult classic horror Scanners comes to Blu-ray as a limited edition steelbook along with a DVD release on 8 April 2013 complete with a slew of brilliant new special features including:

• MY ART KEEPS ME SANE – Interview with star Stephen Lack
• THE EYE OF SCANNERS – Interview with cinematographer Mark Irwin
• THE CHAOS OF SCANNERS – Interview with executive producer Pierre David
• EXPLODING BRAINS & POPPING VEINS – Interview with makeup effects artist Stephen Dupuis
• BAD GUY DANE – Interview with actor Lawrence Dane

Scanners II: The New Order and Scanners III: The Takeover will also be released for the first time on Blu-ray only as single releases on 8 April 2013.

Scanners Synopsis:
Drifter Cameron Vale (Stephen Lack – Dead Ringers) is plagued by incessant voices in his head unaware that he is a Scanner – a person with extraordinary powers who can not only read minds but literally tear them apart. He soon encounters Dr. Paul Ruth (Patrick McGoohan – "The Prisoner"), a scientist trying to help his kind adapt to society, but another underground movement of Scanners led by the psychotic Darryl Revok (Michael Ironside – Total Recall), has other intentions, and the ultimate confrontation of minds awaits.

Scanners II: The New Order Synopsis:
Scanners II: The New Order is the sequel to David Cronenberg’s original classic. A corrupt, power-crazed police official has high ambitions and plans to use the telepathic power of Scanners to achieve his goal. With the aid of a scientist and a new drug, he believes he can control their minds to do his bidding, but a rogue Scanner has other plans.

Scanners III: The Takeover Synopsis:
Scanners III: The Takeover is the final installment of the trilogy that began with David Cronenberg’s classic shocker. A Scanner named Helena takes an experimental drug that turns her into a psychotic killer. As she goes on a murderous rampage with visions of world domination, only one man can stop her - her brother, Alex.

Unfortunately, while originally we heard the releases would be region-free, Second Sight regretfully announced that the three Scanners films on Blu-ray will be Region B, and the Scanners DVD will be Region 2: "We sincerely apologise for this, but unfortunately a contractual issue has arisen at the 11th hour which means we are no longer in a position to proceed with a region-free release as originally intended. We are very sorry indeed for the inconvenience, but unfortunately the coding is something we must now adhere to with this release, as on the majority of releases."

We can't think of a better reason to break down and buy a region-free player, can you?

If you've never witnessed the sheer unbridled lunacy of Jim VanBebber's The Manson Family, then do yourself a favor - correct that cinema sin NOW. Or even better wait just a bit longer and see the flick like never before on the big screen and in 1080p!

From the Press Release
Severin Films announces the May 7th Blu-ray debut of Jim VanBebber’s legendary, award-winning indie THE MANSON FAMILY on the 10th anniversary of its original release. US theatrical dates in 20 major cities are scheduled through March and April, and new poster artwork has been created by artist Stephen Romano for the occasion. VanBebber’s highly anticipated new short GATOR GREEN will accompany many of the screenings and will also be included in the extras-packed Special Edition Blu-ray release.

The theatrical run launches at Landmark Theatres locations in Denver and San Francisco on March 22nd and will continue through April, taking in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, Boston and many more (see below for a partial list of engagements, with more to be announced in the coming weeks).

THE MANSON FAMILY delivers an uncompromising, brutal vision of the collapse of the “Love Generation.” On a ranch outside of LA the hippie dream is perverting into something evil. What was once an oasis of free love and acid trips has become ground zero for a madman’s paranoid visions. An average group of kids, the "Family," become engulfed in a delusional world where torment and slaughter are considered the path to righteousness. The Manson Family is a dizzying, rapid-fire vision of the sex and violence that unifies the misguided group and, at the direction of their leader, ends in a brutal spree leaving seven people dead in 48 hours. Now re-mastered in stunning HD for the first time ever in America. Extras include an all-new director’s commentary, the brand new short GATOR GREEN, the uncut version of the previously censored feature-length documentary THE VANBEBBER FAMILY on the film’s near-mythic production, and much more.

Severin Films was formed in 2006 with offices in Los Angeles and London. The company produced the acclaimed 2012 horror anthology THE THEATRE BIZARRE, and their previous releases include Richard Stanley’s restored HARDWARE, the all-star war classic THE WILD GEESE, the unrated Director’s Cut of Just Jaeckin’s GWENDOLINE, Enzo Castellari’s original action classic INGLORIOUS BASTARDS, Oscar®-nominee Patrice Leconte’s THE HAIRDRESSER’S HUSBAND, the midnight movie sensation BIRDEMIC – SHOCK & TERROR, Eugenio Martin’s restored HORROR EXPRESS, and Alejandro Jodorowsky’s incomparable masterpiece SANTA SANGRE.

A second sneak peek of the upcoming Episode 1.06 of "The Following," ominously titled "The Fall," has come in, and it features Agent Parker (Annie Parisse) figuring out how to rattle ringleader Emma.

In the clip from TV Guide, it seems that Parker's uncovered a cache of Emma's art, and it all pertains to her mother. "I suspect she's completely traumatized by having killed her," Parker tells Agent Mike Weston (Shawn Ashmore). And apparently parental trauma is something Parker herself is familiar with. After Weston remarks that Emma's mother must have "done a number on her," Parker replies, "Mine sure did... Parental influence defines us."

Parisse told TV Guide that Monday's episode is her favorite of the season. "Where the story is at the end of Episode 6, I think the audience is going to really love it," she teases. "It just goes to such a deep place."

"The Following" Episode 1.06 - "The Fall" (2/25/13)
Carroll’s true intentions are revealed through a new follower, Charlie (guest star Tom Lipinski), and as Hardy learns of Carroll’s plans, he tries to stall Emma, Paul, and Jacob (Valorie Curry, Adan Canto, Nico Tortorella) by taunting them in hopes of turning them against each other. Meanwhile, Emma makes a shocking decision.
