Prepare for the Apocalypse with Run for Your Lives Zombie-Infested, Obstacle-Laden 5K RunsAs we frequently mention, the zombie apocalypse is not a matter of if, but when, and we're doing our best to be sure you beloved Dread Central readers are prepared to deal with it. It's a simple case of the 6 P's: Preparation and Planning Prevent Piss-Poor Performance. And when the shit goes down, that preparation is going to decide who's gonna survive and who's gonna be dead... or in this case undead. One great way to prepare is with Run for Your Lives 5Ks.

As Columbus told us in Zombieland, the first rule is cardio, and what better way to build up that endurance than participating in a 5K run that's already crawling with zombies? Although these undead are more the thespian type and less likely to engorge themselves on your brain matter, the possibility is still there. And the experience is much like the true zombie takeover. Undead beasties snatching at you, obstacles, wildly running just to save your ass as your lungs burn and blood-thirsty hordes nip at your heels. Sounds like a great time.

If this is the kind of thing you're into, you're in luck! Initially the Run For Your Lives 5K run was held in only one location; now the disease has spread, and these thing are cropping up all over the US. Here's the current schedule:

    Atlanta – March 3
    Boston – May 5
    Minneapolis – June 2
    Indianapolis – June 23
    Denver – July 14
    Seattle/Portland – Aug. 4
    St. Louis – Aug. 18
    Pittsburgh – Sept. 1
    Toronto – Sept. 15
    San Diego/Los Angeles – Oct. 20
    Baltimore – Oct. 27
    Austin – Dec. 15

And if you don't think you could make the whole 5K, or running for fun doesn't sound appealing to you, there's still plenty of stuff to do at the events. Check out the Run for Your Lives website. This is a truly unique good time.

    From the Press Release
Protect your brain and run for your life. This is one race where your legs giving out are the least of your problems. Run for Your Lives is a first-of-its-kind event, one part 5K, one part obstacle course, one part escaping the clutches of zombies — and all parts awesome.

Runners will navigate a series of 12 obstacles throughout a 5K course in an attempt to reach the finish line — all while avoiding zombies. At the end of this adventure race, you get to celebrate survival (or zombie transformation) with live entertainment and music, local celebrities, vendors, food, and of course, beer!

We've made no bones about the fact that Mike Flanagan's Absentia (review here) was among our favorite films of last year. If you haven't had a chance to check it out for yourself yet, then mark your calendar for February 2nd as Flanagan will be hosting an online screening and Q&A of the film that evening.

    Here are the details:

The screening starts at 10:00 PM ET/7:00 PM PT on Constellation.tv. Flanagan will be live via webcam and talking with the audience as the film airs.

Absentia stars Katie Parker, Courtney Bell, David Levine, Morgan Brown, Justin Gordon, James Flanagan, and genre favorite Doug Jones.

    Synopsis
Tricia's (Bell) husband has been missing for seven years. Her younger sister, Callie (Parker), comes to live with her as the pressure mounts to finally declare him 'dead in absentia.' Tricia is reluctant, always holding out hope, but Callie is practical and wants her to move on. As Tricia sifts through the wreckage and tries to move on with her life, Callie finds herself drawn to an ominous tunnel near the house. As she begins to link it to other mysterious disappearances, it becomes clear that his presumed death might be anything but 'natural.' It seems that the ancient force at work in the tunnel might have set its sights on Callie and Tricia ... and Tricia's husband might be suffering a fate far worse than death in its grasp.

Can't make the screening? Absentia has a February 7th Ultra-VOD release planned, and it hits DVD on March 13th.

Exclusive Set Report and Photo Gallery from H.M. Coakley's Hollaback

    $
    0
    0

Stepping onto the set of writer/director H.M. Coakley’s horror whodunit Hollaback last year on December 18th, the first few things that became readily apparent were the blood trail which serpentined across the wood flooring of the 130-year-old Los Angeles Antebellum mansion (doubling for the deep South) and the flick’s ‘token white chick,’ who came in the form of actress Allison Kyler. The third was the abundance of enthusiasm for the production which was mirrored by cast and crew alike.

Arriving to set on day eleven of fifteen and greeted by Hollaback associate producer and casting director Venk Modur, we conducted the majority of our hushed interviews against the aural backdrop of screams and whimpering as writer and director Coakley led his cast through the film’s scripted carnage.

It is a sequel,” said Modur of Hollaback, which serves as a follow-up to filmmaker Coakley’s 2006 feature Holla (review here), which the latter produced alongside his wife, Camille Irons Coakley. Distributed by Lionsgate, Holla stars Shelli Boone as “Monica St. John,” an actress who, after being forced to institutionalize her homicidal twin sister, “Veronica”, finds her friends dropping off like flies during their vacation to a ski resort. Described as an urban mash-up of Scream and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, the film went on to secure high October ratings on BET and continues to scare them up there each Halloween season.

Set in Florida, Hollaback picks up six years after the events in Holla. Monica (played in the sequel by The House Bunny actress Kiely Williams) has gone through numerous surgical procedures in order to hide her true identity given her lingering paranoia over the murders perpetrated by her deceased, psychotic sibling. Now a vocalist for the band Rhapsody and engaged to “Robbie” (actor Trae Ireland), she and a new group of friends decide to stage her wedding at a sprawling plantation outside of Miami. When they arrive, however, all bets are off, and as the body count begins to mount, so do the questions. Has Veronica come back to finish the job?

It does have some of the elements and ideas from the original film,” explained Modur of Hollaback, “but we’ve added elements that will gear this towards a mass audience, and that’s what we’d like to have - a cult following like The Evil Dead and things like that because the script is really funny. The way people die in it is also funny, with less clothes than they started with, which is always a good thing.

Executive produced by Lanre Idewu (who also appears) and produced by Camille Irons Coakley, Hollaback’s remaining and ethnically diverse cast is comprised of Vanessa Bell Calloway (Cheaper By the Dozen), Akeem Smith (“Teen Wolf”), Laila Odom, Gregory Michael Cipes (“True Blood”), prolific voice actress Masasa Moyo, Crystal Hoang (Blood Effects), Randy Clark (The Vortex), newcomers Perry L. Brown, Jose Antonio, Cyann Ribeiro and David Heard, Brazilian model Gabriela Dias, the returning Shelli Boone and the previously mentioned Allison Kyler of Chromeskull: Laid to Rest 2 fame, among others.

Of the cast, “I think they are amazing,” Modur stated of the ensemble from the roof of the location (we’d retreated there in an attempt to capture clear audio, given the shooting frenzy within). “They all have a great spirit about them and are all really excited about the project,” he continued. “In the casting process it was important to me that they all had great personalities and also what they could bring to their roles. I wanted them to help in breaking the film away from just being an ‘urban horror’ film. I mean, we had the script and the lines, but what could they bring to their roles in order to bring them to another place and to make it mainstream? So as I became involved as a co-producer and with me being a horror fanatic, whether its ‘funny/scary’ or just being ‘scary/scary’, with this I really think it’s slated to be a fun, campy horror film a la Friday the 13th . We want it to have those classic elements of a horror film but with a diverse cast. Movies like Candyman or The People Under the Stairs, they had a diverse cast, too, but also reached a broad audience, and that’s how I’d like this film to be.

Concerning the sex and gore quotient as scripted in Hollaback, “We wanted to amp them up,” offered Modur, conceding that Holla was a bit tame. “We are keeping the gore to a minimum, although I’d love to add a little bit more, but we kicked up the sexy parts 100% because we had none in the first one.

As for FX artist Kenneth Nolls, who's providing the production’s purported minimal splatter, “This guy literally came to me and laid out how he would do every gag to the detail, but the thing that sold me on him is that this is the first horror movie I’ve ever worked on in any aspect, and I was like, ‘How do you know when someone dies what it’s supposed to look like?’ And Kenneth said, ‘Well, because I go to the coroner’s office and I hang out there.’ And I was like, ‘You are so kick-ass, you are hired!’ And he really knows what he’s doing.

That’s where I do all of my research!” said Nolls, who was at the time prepping for gags involving an arrow in the head and a cranial beat-down involving a rock. “It makes it so much easier when you see what the injuries actually look like in real life in order to be able to translate them onto film. I’m going as realistic as possible, and I know our director is not too much into gore, but I’ve been given the green light to make it somewhat gory. If Venk had his way, I’d have intestines hanging out of everyone. Later on we do have a scene where a girl gets shot in the head, though, and that’s going to look very realistic.

Stepping onto the roof, actress Kyler (who in the last year or so has amassed quite a few feature genre roles, from Chromeskull: Laid to Rest 2 to the upcoming Hallow Pointe, Manson Rising and more) arrived blood-spattered from a previous take and stated of her place in Hollaback, “It’s an ensemble cast. The whole premise is that they are going away for their wedding, and I am the wedding planner who is coordinating all of the events and booking the space and making everyone happy... well, except for all of the killings.

Affecting spot-on the lilt of a Southern belle, “I also get to have an accent in this film, did I tell you that?” Kyler added.

Allison came into the audition, and she stood out the most,” stated producer Camille Coakley of the actress’ casting. “She has such effervescence to her. It’s that sweetness that could turn really shitty later. I mean, she’s an interesting story. She does back-up singing and dancing for Motley Crue so she’s an interesting story, and that interesting story comes off in her vibe, and she’s got great vibes.

As children of the crew ran about upstairs waging pitched battles with Transformers figures and below a pack of feral cats ducked in and out of the bowels of the building, I caught up with director Coakley for a pause in his orchestration of this sea of activity, who stated of directing Hollaback, “It’s been challenging. You know, it’s the usual deal. Not enough money, not enough time and not enough experience, but we are getting through it. The cast and crew have been great, and I feel really blessed to have them. They are all working really hard, and we’ve really gelled. It really is a big cast so that’s saying a lot.

We did up the sex in this one,” Coakley, who was shooting Hollaback on 5D, mirrored of producer Modur’s statement. “The bloggers just killed me for that on Holla and just nailed me because there was basically no nudity at all in the first one, and they ripped me on the gore and the red herrings and suspense. So this time there’s mad herrings and quite a bit of nudity. I’m not a big gore guy, though. I’m more ‘old school’. Just enough to sell it instead of tons of blood gushing out of guts, even though that’s what Venk would like. But it is more ‘old school’. I’ve been building the suspense and the scares, and then you see the aftermath. I like to build that level of suspense into a scene because I think that initial scare is what gets people more than the gore. The gore is kind of like the candy after a meal. I think the meal is more lasting.

    0

A few days ago we got some preliminary details about the two "mystery men" who were revealed at the end of a promo for the upcoming Episode 2.08, "Nebraska", of "The Walking Dead"; and now things have been fleshed out a bit. In addition, if you don't mind mild spoilers, we have brief synopses of the balance of the Season 2 installments.

    According to Spoiler TV:

Michael Raymond-James' character of Dave is a charming and friendly guy from a city in the Northeast who has spent a significant amount of time in low-rent bars. He’s able to disarm with a smile but can quickly turn dangerous. He is the seemingly nice guy who is ruthless and cunning. Fans should recognize Raymond-James from "Terriers" and/or "True Blood".

Aaron Munoz's Tony is quick tempered and does not present himself as intelligent as Dave. He likes women, food, and guns.

They should be around for four episodes.

Now for the titles and synopses:

Episode 2.09 - "Triggerfinger" - Rick, Hershel, and Glen are trapped and fight to survive; Shane finds Lori in danger.

Episode 2.10 - "18 Miles Out" - Rick and Shane are in conflict over the fate of an outsider; Andrea helps Hershel's daughter face a crucial decision.

Episode 2.11 - "Judge, Jury, Executioner" - Rick sides with Shane, causing Dale to worry that the group is losing its humanity; Carl's actions have unintended consequences.

Not that you could ever become tired of killing zombies in Banoi, but Deep Silver has gone ahead and created some more great content for Dead Island. How sweet! Now you have delicious DLC pie to go with your zombie slaying cake.

    From the Press Release
This DLC offers a unique new perspective into the incidents in the main story of Dead Island (review here): This time the player will get the chance to play as Ryder White, the antagonist of the main game, and learn more about his motivations and why, from his point of view, he did what he had to do. This fresh take on the Dead Island story shows Ryder White both as a military man and a loving husband.

The DLC stars Ryder White as a newly playable character and offers a single player campaign with several hours of story content with twists and turns that will shed new light on the game’s happenings. Two blueprints and weapons will further expand the already impressive arsenal of Dead Island.

The new DLC is single player only, but it allows you to witness part of the storyline never told before--namely, why Ryder White became the crazy lunatic you see in the main storyline. You can also find some new weapons and blueprints to slaughter more zombies with. The DLC is expected to be released on February 1, 2012, so get your 800 Microsoft or £7.99 if you're playing on Playstation 3 or Steam. This came just in time for you Dead Island junkies who have been looking for your next zombie fix!

Dark Legends Set for Early 2012 Release

What's the best way to make an awesome RPG even better? By casting legions of the undead as the main characters and enemies in the game of course!

The highly popular MMO series Legends is being overhauled with a horrific new makeover. Spacetime Studios will be releasing Dark Legends for Andriod, iOS and Chrome during the first quarter of 2012, but fans of the series can expect big changes in the third installment of the franchise. In addition to new characters and combat enhancements, the biggest changes in the game will include a new storyline and an increased focus on narrative. Don't worry. This game tells a far better vampire story than Twilight.

    From the Press Release
Fans of the popular Legends franchise, Pocket Legends and Star Legends, will discover a gameplay evolution in Dark Legends that draws them even deeper into the experience. The combat system delivers fast paced, action oriented gameplay that includes new mechanics such as charge attacks and the ability to drain enemies. A wide breadth of solo and multiplayer content will also be available.

The most significant change is a much deeper focus on narrative. In addition to story communicated during the 3D multiplayer missions, players will periodically be given the option to complete quick action missions with a single tap. These missions use brief cut scenes to create an interactive storybook, where players experience the life of a vampire up-close and personal.

You can find out more about the game by visiting the Dark Legends website.

Run for Your Life in rComplex

Picture if you will having to run and never stop running because if you do, a tentacled black mass is liable to tear you limb from limb. Now that doesn't happen every day, does it?

    From the Press Release
InterWave Studios announces that rComplex will be available on HD iOS devices at the end of February 2012. Developed by indie veterans Roger Hicks and Brian Terwilliger of EVENT Games, rComplex is a complete reimagining of the 2009 critically acclaimed indie title.

In rComplex fans return to the shadowy world where the running man races against an ever-approaching darkness committed to its deadly pursuit. It never rests. It just keeps coming. Playing as the running man, a player’s reflexes are put to the test. Movement and firepower are allies against the ominous darkness. Escape depends upon dexterity and perseverance. Players must dodge obstacles while constantly moving forward, keeping ahead of the monstrous tentacles that give chase. A limited supply of firepower can stave off the darkness when death seems most imminent.

“In rComplex you begin by running. Why the darkness chases you and where it comes from is as unknown as your own identity. You must evade its tentacle grasp for as long as possible, until you can piece together the events that led to your current situation. With no gimmicks to distract from the intuitive control system, rComplex is all about survival and unveiling the mystery,” said Igor Raffaele, general manager of InterWave Studios.

rComplex uses Unity 3D to create the game for iOS platforms as well as upcoming Android, Windows and Mac releases. The game’s enhanced visual style mixes bold contrasts with color-coded objects. An intuitive control design ensures that players never have to miss a step due to clumsy control mechanics.

rComplex’s compelling story unveils itself across seven environments. Levels feature varied challenges including motorbikes zooming on devastated highways and tense claustrophobic runs through dilapidated factories. Exclusive items, unlockable achievements for flawless runs and low death counts provide story and bragging rights

Toy Fair 2012: Lego Gets Monstrous

    $

    0

I'm always amazed at how casually monsters and horror have worked their way into media seemingly made for "kids". The Pirates of the Caribbean films (from Walt Disney) have had zombies, fish monsters AND unkillable skeleton pirates. Hell, those lovable Ewoks from Star Wars set out to EAT our heroes when they first met. Never forget what the "Luka Luka Luuuuka" song really means.

LEGO has obviously always had an appreciation for the macabre, whether it be the inclusion of a zombie in the first series of Mini Figures or the extra bits that come with the Star Wars Hoth Wampa Set ... like the pile of bones, human skeleton and Tauntaun leftovers. FAMILY FUN!! Now LEGO is taking things up a notch, replacing its awesome salute to Mars Attacks (Alien Conquest) with a line called MONSTER FIGHTERS!

Since the New York Toy Fair is actually three weeks away, all we've got for you is the art displayed on an outer wall at the UK Toy Fair and as complete a description of the sets that we've seen so far. These titles are not 100%...

The Wolf Man - Seems to have mini figures of a werewolf and an old school adventurer or scientist...you know the kind with a pith helmet? Center pieces include a launching tree and a little buggy for the professor.

The Swamp Creature - Includes a water craft with two rockets to fire and a hunter to drive it into battle against the Creature with his harpoon! There's also a little alter-looking configuration for the Creature with a dead fish at its base.

The Mummy - A female monster hunter rides a sort of gyro-copter in pursuit of the Mummy on his chariot pulled by a skeleton horse. The Mummy has a whip and a sword while the hunter has a crossbow with a bolt and a spare bolt in her hair!

Vampire Hearse (aka Dracula's...totally awesome batmobile) - Picture the family car from "The Munsters". That can be the only inspiration for this. Dracula's long black ride features fangs in the grill, piercing red headlights, bones along the engine and more. In hot pursuit appears to be an English gentleman on a motorcycle with a fencing-type sword. There appears to be another figure with Dracula, but we can't make him out.

Zombies - We've only heard about the existence of this set so far so have no further details.

Frankenstein - A tower for catching electricity, a table for resurrecting dead flesh and a wacky scientist to scream "IT'S ALIIIVE!!" This set features the mad scientist, Frankenstein's Monster and what appear to be two angry townsfolk as well as a monster hunting vehicle with a projectile, what appears to be a holding cell for the Monster and a slice of the scientist's lab.

The Ghost Train - Exactly what it sounds like! A black engine with spectral fire coming out of its stack and green lights leading the way pulls three carts with little bat wings! The bat wings are said to flap as they go along!! The set seems to include three ghosts to battle two monster hunters in their prop plane with projectile firing mechanisms. We see the female monster hunter can hang off the bottom by a rope, brandishing a crossbow.

The Vampire Castle - Comes with a Man-Bat (or 2), Dracula, his Bride and two human monster fighters as well as a tricked-out monster hunter mobile with a launching net! The castle has some sort of crystal ray feature in the tower, which pops out from behind what looks like a stained glass window. This ties into the storyline, which I'll get to in a minute. There also seems to be a trap-door feature in the tower.

So here's what I've put together. Each set comes with an idol/gem stone that both monsters and fighters are after..probably some sort of ultimate power dealy. The bit that looks like stained glass in the Vampire Castle tower is actually all the idols/gems plugged into a wheel, which I suppose activates the laser of doooom!! There is also a glow in the dark element in each set so take note!

Monster Fighters can be seen below Frank, Drac, and Wolfie; and under them we've added two extra pics to our story. One looks a lot like the Swamp Creature but is missing the fin on top of his head and some minor redecos to his overall look. The second is my little collection of LEGO Mini Figures, which come single-packed and have included at least one monster-looking dude in each wave! You'll notice Dracula and Frankenstein are close cousins to their Monster Fighter counterparts!

June 2012 is the tentative date set for the launch of LEGO's Monster Fighters so keep watch.

  • Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

"I used to work there. My brother did, too. My grandfather, too. My family's always been in meat!"

I learned something about you this week, dear readers. Like myself, you really love The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. And rightfully so. When it didn't show up on Dread Central's Top 10 Groundbreaking Films list, I heard from you. Now I'm not here to argue why it wasn't on the list or why it should have been; I'm just here to celebrate the awesomeness of the film. That's right - this week's Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel honor goes to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre in all its glory.

Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

Everything about this film is perfect. The chilling intro, the underlying story of grave robbing and Edwin Neal’s unforgettably manic portrayal of The Hitchhiker. And I do mean unforgettable. I recall many a night as a young 'un, lying awake in bed trying not to see that nutcase grabbing Franklin’s knife and slicing his hand open…but it simply wouldn’t go away. Once its hooks are in, you’re not shaking The Texas Chain Saw Massacre ... ever.

Filmed on a paper-thin budget over the course of four weeks, which was two weeks longer than initially planned, this movie implies so much more than it shows. The casual viewer will remember gallons of blood being spilled on the screen, when in fact there was very little stage blood used during the production (although there are well known accounts of Marilyn Burns shedding more than a bit of her own blood during the intense filming). They will tell you that a chill went down their spine when they saw that meat hook come through the front of Pam’s (Terri McMinn) chest. And as we all know, that never happens either. Director Tobe Hooper did a masterful job making you remember things you didn’t actually see. And he needed to, as the film was operating on limited finances.

Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

But what was created on that meager budget would go on to inspire absolute legions of followers. Let me describe a movie for you: a group of teens/young adults venture out into the woods/hillside/rural area, and after their car breaks down/blows a tire/runs out of gas, they realize they are being hunted by a family/tribe/pack of deranged/deformed/cannibalistic weirdos. Sound familiar? The Hills Have Eyes, Wrong Turn, House of 1000 Corpses, Wolf Creek and Malevolence come to mind immediately, and I’m sure you can conjure dozens of others. They all must tip their cap to the original, and still the best, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

As with all the truly horrific films, the tension is unbelievable. Hooper builds it by making us wonder just how demented can this family be? How far is this going to go? He reveals the answer to us in the now infamous dinner scene as Sally Hardesty (Burns) sees just exactly how twisted the family is when Grandpa is brought in to join the festivities. And Burns is brilliant. It is the sheer terror she channels that makes the final 25 minutes of the film legendary. The movie is gritty, the intro tells us that it’s real and to watch Burns in action with the killers, you could almost believe it is.

Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

Of all the slashers we’ve come to know, Leatherface may just represent the most perverse of them all. If the mask of human flesh isn’t off-putting enough, the undertones of sexual depravity (or at least sexual ambiguity and confusion) make him that much more disturbing. And although he takes his place amongst this family of killers, his larger-than-life persona is the most memorable of the film.

You cannot make a better film than this about people being hunted. It just seems too real. It seems effortless. A perfect storm of great villains blessed with wonderful victims. An absolute treasure of a horror film. It has stood the test of time, inspired legions and easily goes down as one of the best, most influential horror films ever. And for that we honor The Texas Chain Saw Massacre with this week's Tip of the Scalpel.

It's no big secret that the Xbox 360 has lagged behind its competition in the role playing genre in recent years. But with the addition of big name franchises like Mass Effect, Fable, Final Fantasy, Elder Scrolls and Fallout, Microsoft is looking to be the number one console for RPG gamers as well.

Come April 17, 2012, gamers will be able to add another great RPG to their 360 collection in CD Projekt RED's Enhanced Edition of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition will feature roughly the same narrative but with many new improvements and all of the previous downloadable content and upgrades already on disc. PC players will be happy to learn that they will receive all of the extra content for FREE!

    From the Press Release
Gameplay has been extended through the addition of new quests and locations, while The Witcher 2’s intriguing plot becomes even more complex with the introduction of major new NPCs who intensify the struggle for power in the Northern Kingdoms. Other enhancements include the game’s user interface, which has been revamped to deliver better control on the Xbox 360, while new targeting, camera and control systems will give players full control of the witcher during the game’s dynamic and tactically rich combat sequences.

“The Xbox 360 version is a complete adaptation of the game to the new platform; we’ve rewritten the code so it feels native to the console. This latest version of The Witcher 2 has been expanded in many ways, and some experts believe it to be one of the best-looking games ever to make it to consoles,” said Adam Badowski, head of CD Projekt RED studio.
