New Teaser Lights Up for Fire City: King of Miseries

Exclusive First Look at Tom Woodruff's King of MiseriesAnd the badassery continues! Another teaser has come our way for the new project from special effects legend and Academy Award-winning creature designer Tom Woodruff, Jr., entitled Fire City: King of Miseries. Dig it!

The short film Fire City: King of Miseries is directed by Woodruff as a stand-alone film that will set the stage for his feature length directorial debut, Fire City: The Interpreter of Signs.

Woodruff brings 20-plus years of experience and dozens of big-budget studio projects under his belt as well as his creature effects house, Amalgamated Dynamics Inc. with partner Alec Gillis. King of Miseries stars John Robinson, Stacy Haiduk, and Denesa Chan. Writing-producing team Brian Lubocki and Michael Hayes, under their banner Okay By Me Productions, created a new story world called Fire City, where demons live in a fragile balance among us, but humans can’t see them for what they are. With a unique mythology, a world origin never seen before, a host of creatures, characters and storylines, Lubocki and Hayes plan to slowly roll out their world to an avid fan base waiting for a new franchise, beginning with a short film premiering online.

The short film centers on a fortune teller in the demon world, called an interpreter of signs (Haiduk), who reads the fortune of a paranoid demon named Christopher (Robinson) and discovers he’s not telling her the full story. After forcing him to reveal he’s found a device, a chronolet, that allows its user to travel back in time, the interpreter pleads with Christopher not to use the device. Not only is it impossible for her to read the fortune of a past which hasn’t happened yet, the device poses too great a danger. Will he take her advice or will he risk our future and his own for a demon’s chance at an untold fortune?

Below you'll find artwork, the tarot cards that are used by the Interpreter in the film (they are said to be the demon tarot and come with their own mythology as well), and an early look at the comic book tie-in, which will be available at San Diego Comic-Con next month and explains what happened to our characters before the start of the short film. Is that a lot to digest? Well, sure it is, but damn if it isn't sweet!

Riddick stars Vin Diesel and is based on a script by David Twohy, who wrote both Chronicles of Riddick and Pitch Black, where he first created the character of Riddick.

Joining Diesel are a returning Karl Urban (Star Trek) as Vaako; Jordi Molla as Santana, the arrogant captain of the mercenary ship; Matt Nable (Killer Elite) as Boss Johns, a man looking for answers; Katee Sackhoff (TV's "Battlestar Galactica") as the Nordic mercenary Dahl; and Bokeem Woodbine (Total Recall) as bounty hunter Moss. Rounding out the cast are Dave Bautista (The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption), Conrad Pla (Immortals), Raoul Trujillo (Apocalypto), Nolan Funk (Aliens in America), and two-time Grammy Award-nominated singer Keri Hilson.

Synopsis:
Riddick, the latest chapter of the groundbreaking saga that began with 2000’s hit sci-fi film Pitch Black and 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick reunites writer/director David Twohy (A Perfect Getaway, The Fugitive) and star Vin Diesel (the Fast and Furious franchise, xXx). Diesel reprises his role as the antihero Riddick, a dangerous, escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy.

The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.

The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy.

Exclusive: Jen and Sylvia Soska on American Mary, The ABCs of Death 2, and More

Exclusive: Jen and Sylvia Soska on American Mary, The ABCs of Death 2, and MoreThis week American Mary, the Soska Sisters’ stunning follow-up to Dead Hooker in a Trunk, arrives on Blu-ray and DVD courtesy of XLrator Media; and to mark the occasion, we recently chatted with the Twisted Twins about their latest release, what's next, and much more.

Check out the highlights of our exclusive interview with the Soskas below, and look for American Mary on Blu-ray and DVD everywhere now!

Dread Central: Thanks so much for taking the time to chat today, ladies- you did a fantastic job on the film and created an incredible character for Katharine [Isabelle]. What was it in your minds that made her perfect to play Mary?

Jen Soska:Well, as a rule, we never ever write for a particular actor; we usually have types in mind, but when we’re trying to create characters, we try and put as much of that out of our minds as we can. But we totally broke that rule with Katie because we’ve been watching her for so long and thought it was time she had the opportunity to play a role like this.

Sylvia Soska:Yeah, Jen and I have been fans of her work ever since Ginger Snaps, and we’ve seen every single one of her films since then; Katie is brilliant in everything, but I think we were both frustrated as fans because here is an exceptionally gifted actress who isn’t being offered the ‘grown-up’ or complicated roles I know she can handle. We’re still in this phase in Hollywood where we are getting caricatures of various types of women rather than real women characters, which is really sad to see.

And to us, Katie is the thinking person’s Scream Queen; sure she’s beautiful and has all of the physical attributes working to her advantage, but she also has this intelligence to her that almost supersedes her beauty and her years. It might sound a little strange, but everything that happens in American Mary was something that I personally wanted to see Katie do as an actress and I knew that if we could get her for the movie that she would absolutely kill at it; I think we’re both even bigger fans after working with her on American Mary, which is kind of hard to imagine, but it’s totally true.

Dread Central: When I interviewed Katharine, she mentioned how a lot of Mary’s story also parallels the struggles you both have overcome in the industry over the last few years. How much of what we’re seeing is art imitating life then?

Sylvia Soska:Well, back when we were writing American Mary, we were still in the process of selling Dead Hooker so we were pretty much broke at the time. We couldn’t even afford to eat, let alone afford to make another movie, so we spent a lot of time thinking about our experiences, venturing into the film industry with a lot of naivety at the time. We met a lot of great and supportive people, but we also met a lot of real monsters through the years that made us wonder a lot about whether or not the sacrifices we had been making would ever amount to anything.

Jen Soska:I would say that as we both grew up with the hopes of becoming actresses and filmmakers, we’ve seen some really sleazy things through the years, and we’re still really young, you know? (laughs) But to find out that there are people still today who only view women as sexual objects or think of us as inferior was something that surprised us both and of course made us realize that regardless of how far women have come, it’s just a sad actuality of this business. The people you think you can trust or who maybe seem ‘reputable’ often turned out to be anything but that, and so we came to realize that often times it's the people who seem normal and respectable on the outside that are hiding their true intentions, and most of the time they’re not good intentions at all. And since that’s something that could easily translate well into the medical world, we thought it would make for some interesting allegories to set this story in the world of a medical student who was quickly learning how the people who you trust and expect to be supportive of you can often be the cruelest.

Dread Central: Katharine also mentioned that she saw Mary as an unredeemable character- was that something both of you were conscientious of while writing the script? Is it harder to pull off creating a protagonist who ultimately becomes an antagonist in some ways by the conclusion of American Mary?

Sylvia Soska:I think one of my favorite quotes was by Clive Barker, who was discussing the character of Pinhead; here’s a character who’s unredeemable, in both of his lifetimes, and yet there are still fans that exist for him worldwide. Why? Because you connected with him, for better or for worse, and giving the audience ways to connect with Mary was always important to both of us.

Jen Soska:To keep Mary a believable character, she was never going to be this ‘hero’- she was going to make a lot of crappy decisions and she had to live with those. In some ways she chose her own ending, but at the same time she also had some truly terrible things happen to her that ended up pushing her towards those decisions so it was a balance in some ways. Ultimately, though, Mary accepted responsibility, which I think was the biggest part of keeping her character authentic throughout the story. She knows she’s been screwed over, but she’s not going to play a victim either so she owns all her decisions, which I think in many ways is incredibly powerful.

Sylvia Soska:I think the best horror films out there are the ones made with a philosophy in mind; you don’t have to agree with that philosophy, but I think a film, horror or otherwise, is always more effective when it has something to say. A lot of films over the last few years have let style dictate their substance - they’re missing that human element that engages audiences - and so it was very important to us that, no matter what decision Mary was making in the film, the viewers still were behind her either way.

Dread Central: It was recently announced that you would be directing a segment in The ABCs of Death 2 so congratulations on that! How incredible is it for you both to be part of the next anthology and keeping some great company as well in regard to the other filmmakers already co-announced?

Jen Soska:It’s so awesome- you really could not ask for better producers than the team working on ABCs of Death. We’re so excited.

Sylvia Soska:I loved the first so much so when they called us to ask us to be a part of the second one, I think we were screaming so loud that our neighbors definitely hated us that day. It’s such a huge honor, and to be in the same class as these other incredible filmmakers almost feels like a dream. We have a few ideas on what we’d like to do, but we’re still working all of that out. It’s going to be a lot of fun though- I can’t wait to get started, and I cannot wait to see how it all turns out in the end.

Written and directed by the Soska Sisters, American Mary stars Katharine Isabelle, Antonio Cupo, Tristan Risk, David Lovgren, Paula Lindberg, Clay St. Thomas, John Emmet Tracy, and Twan Holliday.

Synopsis
This metaphor for the Soskas' own journey through the independent film industry follows medical student Mary Mason as she becomes increasingly broke and disenchanted. The allure of easy money sends Mary into the twilight world of body modification and underground surgeries where obsessed flesh artists will pay anything and go through any pain to get their unusual procedures done. But Mary soon finds that her new "profession" leaves more marks on her own psyche than on her freakish clientele.

Black Devil Doll Returning... To TV?Black Devil Doll is offensive, dirty, disturbed, naughty, low brow, filthy, and rumored to cause explosive diarrhea. That makes it the perfect choice for an evening of wholesome family entertainment. Read on for details.

We are very selective when it comes to which projects we cover that are in the midst of crowd-funding, but sometimes a premise comes along that's just too friggin' bizarre for us to resist! Black Devil Doll fans, the loonies who made the first extremely infamous film need your support as they're looking to bring the antics of everyone's favorite ass bumpin' puppet home in a big way!

If all goes well, the "Black Devil Doll" television show will be a 6-part, 30-minute per episode television series!

That's right... over 3 hours of raunchy and hysterical Black Devil Doll goodness! And they ain't pulling any punches, either. "What we're talkin' about here is your traditional 1980's-style sitcom, shot on sets, super fast-paced, with a laughtrack, a cheeseball theme song, the whole ball of wax," says director Jonathan Lewis. "The main difference is that it's going to be so incredibly over-the-top and filthy that not a single network would touch it. We're going to make a show EXACTLY the way we want to make it. And it's going to blow your fucking mind."

Lynn Lowry Joins Sam Qualiana's The Legend of Six Fingers

Lynn Lowry Joins Sam Qualiana's The Legend of Six FingersActress Lynn Lowry has joined the cast of Sam Qualiana’s upcoming found footage monster movie The Legend of Six Fingers, according to author and filmmaker Gregory Lamberson, who is producing.

Writer-director Qualiana and Lamberson previously collaborated on Snow Shark: Ancient Snow Beast and worked together on Chris Olen Ray’s Battledogs and Debbie Rochon’s Model Hunger. Lowry, memorable for her roles in George Romero’s The Crazies and David Cronenberg’s Shivers (aka They Came from Within), starred in Model Hunger, currently in post-production.

“I’m not being hyperbolic when I say that Lynn is amazing in Model Hunger,” says Lamberson. “It’s a benchmark performance that ranks up there with Terry O’Quinn’s work in The Stepfather, and Sam and I are thrilled to have her in The Legend of Six Fingers. We’ve got some impressive talent on this project.”

In Six Fingers Lowry will portray a woman with special insight into the Native American legend of Yá·yahk osnúhsaˀ, which translates into “Six Fingers” – a Bigfoot-like monster with three fingers on each hand. Two filmmakers (Andrew Elias and Qualiana) shooting an investigative documentary about domestic animal slayings in Western New York switch gears and become monster trackers after encountering Lowry’s character, with horrifying results.

Although the majority of The Legend of Six Fingers won’t be shot until August, Qualiana already shot three scenes with Debbie Rochon after she wrapped her co-starring role in Lamberson and Michael O’Hear’s Dry Bones. Lamberson promises at least one more genre star still to be announced will appear in the film. Craig Lindberg ("Boardwalk Empire,"I Am Legend) is creating the creature effects.

Kickstarter Success Blood Kiss Unites Stars Behind Michael Reaves' StoryAnother horror film has passed through the Kickstarter gauntlet and come out a winner. Blood Kiss, a vamp noir, was written by Michael Reaves, who is suffering from Parkinson's Disease. The horror community has rallied behind this project and is making it a reality.

    From the Press Release
Writer/producer Neil Gaiman, actresses Amber Benson, comic artist Tom Mandrake, friend Whoopi Goldberg, and a number of entertainment industry veterans are rallying to make ailing filmmaker Michael Reaves’ final film, Blood Kiss, a reality.

Blood Kiss is set in Golden Age Hollywood, a classic film noir tale of a sexy jazz singer in distress and a private investigator who takes on a little more than he bargained for when he discovers this case involves vampire murders.

"There's nothing supernatural about vampires," says Reaves, "My vampires, that is. Everything in Blood Kiss is explained in terms of a symbiotic organism that alters DNA - they're much stronger and faster than humans."

Michael Reaves, who is in the advanced stages of Parkinson’s disease, announced the crowd-funding campaign for his film on May 15th, with an initial goal of $50,000. Blood Kiss,\ reached that goal and went beyond.

Award-winning writer/producer Neil Gaiman is among those rallying behind Michael Reaves and will be starring in the film as eccentric movie director Julian Cross. "I'm willing to pretend that the prospect of acting doesn't terrify me in order to help Michael Reaves make his film," said Gaiman, who is known for his work on such series as "Dr. Who" and "Babylon 5," the film Beowulf, as well as the popular comic book series The Sandman, Coraline, American Gods, and others.

Actress Amber Benson, slated to play Ruby Day, the sexy jazz singer in Blood Kiss, is pleased with the fans’ support. "Michael has been a great supporter of not just his friends, but many, many others in the industry, with his encouragement, advice, and his hands-on help," said Benson, who is known for her work on the series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer,""Supernatural," and others. "But now is our turn to give back and make Michael's dream of making his final film a reality."

Others notables who have come forth to back the project include legendary animation writer Paul Dini; best-selling author David Brin; famed comic book artist Tom Mandrake; actress Leah Cevoli; and actress/TV host Whoopi Goldberg, who had this to say: "Can’t wait to see...feel...the Blood Kiss!"

Reaves is known for his prolific writing and producing, which included scripts for such shows as "Batman: The Animated Series,""Star Trek: The Next Generation,""Sliders,""The Flash,""Father Dowling Mysteries,""He-Man,""Dungeons and Dragons,""Gargoyles," and many others. He has received an Emmy Award, a Howie Award, and the prestigious Hampton’s Prize for his contributions along with many other nominations. In recent years Reaves’ health has been impacted by advanced stages of Parkinson''s Disease, forcing the once vibrant and active writer/producer into a wheelchair and unable to speak other than through an electronic voice box.

Tom Mandrake (Batman, Grimjack, The Spectre, Martian Manhunter) is creating a new Blood Kiss graphic novel simultaneous with the feature film. He'll be working with Sian Mandrake, his gifted artist daughter.
