Toy Fair 2012: Diamond Select Toys to Host a Mad Monster Party

Diamond Select Toys has announced the latest property to join its horror line-up of fully poseable action figures: Mad Monster Party, the classic film by Rankin/Bass which brought all of pop culture's most famous monsters to the big screen in 1967.

From the Press Release:
Diamond Select Toys knows monsters -- after all, the Maryland-based collectibles company has been making toys and statues of vampires, aliens and werewolves for almost 13 years.

"The Rankin/Bass Christmas specials have gotten a lot of merchandise over the last decade, but there have been almost zero collectibles made for Mad Monster Party," said Chuck Terceira, director of Diamond Select Toys. "Now that the movie has been released on DVD and seen by a whole new audience for the first time, it feels like the right time to give fans new and old the toys they deserve. The film combines all of the classic monster archetypes with the timeless appeal of Rankin/Bass animation, and we want our toy line to represent the figures you see on the screen as closely as possible."

Mad Monster Party hit theaters in the spring of 1967 and featured the vocal talents of legendary horror actor Boris Karloff and comedienne Phyllis Diller as well as parodies of many of the famous monsters, including Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, the Mummy, the Hunchback, the Invisible Man, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Bride of Frankenstein, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. First released on DVD in 2003 and receiving a special edition in 2009, the film has only added to its already sizable group of dedicated fans.

New Horrors Revealed in Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City Triple Impact Trailer

$

0

Capcom has released another trailer for Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. Called the "Triple Impact" trailer, it shows the undead forces to come and the value of teamwork to keep yourself from becoming one of them!

This team-based shooter will have you rewrite the history of the Raccoon City outbreak. You will choose from six U.S.S characters, each with its own unique skill set and roles.

From the Press Release
Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City delivers a true third-person team-based shooter experience set within the dark and sinister Resident Evil universe and a reinterpretation of the events depicted in Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3. The setting of the Resident Evil universe not only provides a rich backdrop to the action but delivers a unique and thrilling triple threat battle. Zombies and Bio-Organic Weapons (B.O.W’s) add to the mix as players not only compete against an opposing squad but also tackle this third unpredictable element, creating a brand new style of gameplay and breaking the conventions of traditional team based shooters.

It is September 1998, and the action centers once more on the ill-fated Raccoon City and the horrific consequences of the deadly T-virus outbreak from the Umbrella facility. With a coverup required, Umbrella orders an elite team into Raccoon City to destroy all evidence of the outbreak and eliminate any survivors. Hearing of this plan, the US Government dispatches its own special forces to uncover any evidence that exposes the cause of the viral infection and Umbrella’s actions. Players take on the role of an Umbrella Security Services soldier (U.S.S.), competing alone or in four-player co-op in a battle against all the competing forces at play in Raccoon City.

Choose from six characters, each one equipped with a unique skill set, including the female field scientist Four-Eyes, who can manipulate the T-virus and take control of the B.O.W’s raiding the streets of Raccoon City or the weapons expert and U.S.S team captain Lupo.

You can purchase Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City on March 20, 2012, for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and later in the year for the PC. There will also be a special edition version of the game that has tons of extras for only $69.99!

Nightbreed Director's Cut to Screen at Charlotte's Mad Monster Party ConventionNow here's some good news! Clive Barker's Nightbreed, one of the most fan-adored monster movies of all time, will be shown in a never-before-seen three-hour long director's cut at the Mad Monster Party horror convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Saturday, March 24th, 2012.

From the Press Release:
In addition to this special rare event screening, Nightbreed stars Craig Sheffer and Anne Bobby (marking their very first convention appearance) will be in attendance for a Q&A session following the screening and will be signing autographs in the dealer room throughout the weekend. Mark Miller, Hellraiser comic writer and Nightbreed expert, will also be on hand to introduce the film on behalf of Clive Barker and share some insights into Barker's vision for the future of Nightbreed.

Join Mad Monster Party to champion the cause and be a part of the growing movement to give the director's cut of this beloved film its much deserved special edition DVD/Blu-ray release. We're doing our part by sharing this cut and conducting panels which will explain the great opportunities fans will have to offer their support. Many thanks to Nightbreed distributor and owner Morgan Creek for giving us their blessing to show the film. They will be watching, with interest, for audience and fan reaction so let's show them how much we want this to happen.

Once again, THIS VERSION HAS NEVER BEEN SEEN BEFORE. Pulling from three separate cuts of the film, and working closely with Nightbreed's original director of photography Robin Vidgeon, Clive Barker's team at Seraphim Films has assembled a composite that will be the most complete version of the film that has ever been shown.

Come show your support. As a work in progress, it is possible that you may never again get to see this version of Clive Barker's masterpiece Nightbreed as it was always meant to be seen.

In addition to this exciting Nighbreed screening, come meet movie stars RUTGER HAUER (Blade Runner, The Hitcher, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Batman Begins), BRAD DOURIF (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Exorcist 3, Child’s Play, Lord of the Rings, Deadwood), LINDA BLAIR (The Exorcist, Savage Streets), ACE FREHLEY (legendary rock guitarist) DEE WALLACE (E.T., The Howling, Cujo, Critters, The Frighteners), ROWDY RODDY PIPER (wrestling legend, They Live), MARKY RAMONE (The Ramones), WILLIAM KATT ("The Greatest American Hero", Carrie), RICHARD MOLL ('Bull' from "Night Court", House), ANGUS SCRIMM (Phantasm), and many, MANY more well known fiendish faces including some rare and first-time guests that fans have been demanding for years like the one and only Frankenhooker: PATTY MULLEN, who will appear in her iconic character makeup!

The Mad Monster Party is a horror convention with a difference. While other shows install a generic event in a random city, Mad Monster is building their show from the inside out. With the support of local Charlotte organizations like the “Visit Charlotte” tourist board and business leaders like Kevin Blanchfield and his Haunted Mill, Phillip Morris of Morris Costume, etc., Mad Monster Party is putting down roots and committing to a partnership with the Charlotte community to provide a unique convention that is fresh, theatrical, and offers visiting international fans a destination for years to come.

One-day and weekend Mad Monster Party tickets are available as well as a limited number of R.I.P. passes (for Really Intense Partyers). Among the perks RIP Pass holders enjoy are: early entry to the dealer room each day, access to the exclusive RIP Lounge, a walk- through of the Haunted Mill with celebrity guests, autograph guarantees, special reserved seating for events, free admission to special off-site events, a Mad Monster Party swag bag, and much more!

Come join us at the Mad Monster Party for an unforgettable weekend of family-fun horror entertainment among the stars and artists who make horror movies and the fans that love them! Percept Pictures to Release Bollywood Found Footage Film Entitled ?Not since Prince changed his name to that symbol thing have we been so flummoxed as to what to call something. In an attempt to keep the mystery surrounding a new found footage picture at a high, Indian film company Percept Pictures has decided to call its new film ?.

It seems the creators of the film, Yash Dave and Allison Patel, have a real overseas Blair Witch on their hands as you can see by the trailer below (they even have the snotty, runny nose close-up crying scene. And did I not hear the distinctive whining sound effect from the beginning of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre at the start of that trailer? Someone please verify that for me!) ? looks quite intriguing and you can check it out online as it will be released on YouTube on February 17.

Thanks to Dread Central reader and our man on the street, Avery G, for the heads up

    Synopsis

What does the future hold? We have no idea. But it is an interesting subject for horror creators to delve into. And young filmmaker Chris Thomas has dedicated himself to creating a vision of post-apocalyptic terror. He currently has his short film, The Water's Edge touring the film festival circuit…And we've got a sneak peek.

The Water's Edge was produced and directed by Thomas with Richard Standen providing the screenplay. Mark Drake stars in the lead role of Robert Stenuit with Jeff Thomas featured. You'll be impressed with what Thomas did on a budget of 1100 pounds and a four day filming schedule. Thomas and crew are currently looking into making The Water's Edge into a full length feature film. We'll keep you updated on this one.

Did The Rock vs. Jar Jar Binks vs. The Apex Predator vs. Harry Potter Main Event the Box Office Smackdown this Weekend?

    0

Did The Rock vs. Jar Jar Binks vs. The Apex Predator vs. Harry Potter Main Event the Box Office Smackdown this Weekend? The tag team combinations of Channing Tatum & Rachel McAdams and Denzel Washington & Ryan Reynolds may have ruled the record-breaking box office, but for genre fans it was all about The Rock starring in Brendan Fraser’s sloppy seconds, George Lucas’ continuing efforts to wring every last penny out of the Star Wars brand, and round two between a found footage superpowers movie and a Hammer ghost flick starring Harry Potter.

Four movies opened to over $20 million for only the second time in box office history with The Vow ($41 million) and Safe House ($39 million) taking the top two slots. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island was the big new release for the weekend with only the most tenuous relation to the horror genre – it does have monsters, and if nothing else The Rock can at least say he laid the smack down on Jar Jar Binks. The Rock’s pec pop of love, Michael Caine’s slumming, and Vanessa Hudgens getting ogled by the camera in 3D surprised with a $27.5 million opening. That’s a vast improvement over Journey 2 the Center of the Earth’s 2008 opening of $21 million. Does Brendan Fraser smell what The Rock is cooking?

No doubt Journey 2’s big family movie opening cut into the profits for the 3D re-release of the fanboy whipping boy of a generation. Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace in 3D took in $23 million, proving there is still a sizable contingency of Star Wars fans out there who will flock to anything George Lucas offers them. The 3D re-release had strong midnight and Friday openings before it became clear those hardcore fans wanted to be first and the numbers dwindled for the remainder of the weekend.

The $23 million third place showing sounds pretty impressive until you consider the original Star Wars Special Edition theatrical re-release on January 31st of 1997 raked in nearly $36 million its opening weekend and keep in mind that’s in both 1997 dollars and without today’s inflated 3D ticket prices. It would go on to gross upwards of $138 million. Something tells me a movie loathed by so many that airs every other day on Spike TV won’t even make half as much.

Last weekend it was a neck-and-neck contest for the top spot between the superhero found footage flick Chronicle and the Hammer horror The Woman in Black. The two films were back-to-back again, albeit this weekend it was a battle to remain in the top 5.

Strong word-of-mouth is keeping Chronicle going as it only dropped 44% in its second week, easily clinching 5th place with another $12.3 million. The Woman in Black dropped 51%, finishing 6th with $10.3 million. Considering both film were low budget and didn’t spend a vast fortune in marketing, the near $40 million both have raked in domestically alone is more than enough to already turn a profit.

Nipping on their heels like a pack of ravenous wolves at 7th place is Joe Carnahan’s The Grey with another $5 million. That brings its take up to $42 million. which is not bad at all for a thoughtful meditation on death disguised as a wilderness survival flick about plane crash victims being hunted by wolves in the frozen wild.

Next weekend brings us the superhero sequel nobody wanted except for the producers desperate to get a sequel off the ground before they lost the rights to the character back to Marvel/Disney. I speak, of course, of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, the PG-13 3D sequel once again starring Nic Cage as the flaming motorcycle skull of infernal justice. Before anyone gets too excited because the directors of Crank are behind the wheel this time, the movie screened this past December at Harry Knowles’ Butt-Numb-A-Thon and has since been hailed by nearly everyone that was in attendance as not just one of the worst movies to ever screen at that film festival, but an easy early frontrunner for worst movie of 2012. “Parker Lewis Can’t Lose” and Nicolas Cage can’t win.

I dunno, man. Looking at Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins ... yeah, he'd win a staring contest, but only because we'd start laughing at the silliness of his visage.

Below you'll find the latest still from Tim Burton's Dark Shadows featuring Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins and Eva Green as the witch Angelique.

The ensemble cast includes Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Bella Heathcote, Chloe Moretz, Thomas McDonell, and newcomer Gulliver McGrath. Look for it in theatres in glorious 2D on May 11, 2012.

    Synopsis
In the year 1752 Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England, to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass, and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet — or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Brouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.

Also residing in the manor are Elizabeth's ne'er-do-well brother, Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter, Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger's precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David's new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.

The cover art for Lionsgate's latest horror flick starring Method Man has had us laughing uncontrollably since last November when it debuted. We're not even sure why! Still, we've landed you an exclusive clip from The Mortician. Dig it!

    From the Press Release
Home audiences are in for a thrill this winter as Lionsgate releases The Mortician to DVD, Digital Download, and On Demand on February 14th, 2012. The urban thriller features GRAMMY® Winner Method Man (HBO's "The Wire"), Dash Mihok (Punisher: War Zone), Wendell Pierce (HBO's "Treme"), and David Jensen (I Love You Phillip Morris) with Dana Fuchs (Across the Universe) and Edward Furlong (The Green Hornet). An Official Selection at the Berlin International Film Festival, the film's DVD debut also includes a special feature - "Autopsy: Dissecting The Mortician."

    Synopsis
A mortician (Method Man)'s life is changed when a woman's body arrives to his table and stirs up memories of his past. While trying to pull himself together, he finds a young boy hiding in his morgue. The boy tells him that he's only there to say goodbye to his dead mother because he's on the run from his father, who wants him dead. Determined to help him, the mortician takes on the role of personal protector and will stop at nothing to end the cycle of abuse.
