Exclusive: Andrew Gilbert and Simon Mathews Talk The Dead Inside

The upcoming British indie zombie feature The Dead Inside is fresh off filming and ankle-deep in post-production. Taking a break from putting the finishing touches on the film, writer/director Andrew Gilbert and actor Simon Mathews gave Dread Central an exclusive interview as to just what goes into making a zombie film on a shoestring budget.

Dread Central: Zombie films and television programs have exploded in popularity recently; what makes The Dead Inside stand out from other works in the zombie sub-genre of horror?

Andrew Gilbert: Being huge fans of the genre, we (with co-writer Julian Hundy) set out to make the zombie film that we wanted to see. Obviously, working on a micro budget, this wasn’t entirely possible, but we wanted to include all our favorite aspects and explore the popular and recurring themes that run through the genre like the first encounter, surviving the initial outbreak, the role of the military/police, etc. There are so many areas to explore within zombie films that give them such mass appeal and really capture your imagination. I think the sign of a good zombie film is one that makes you think afterwards, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if the zombies attacked right now?’ and I hope we achieved that with The Dead Inside.

Simon Mathews: The Dead Inside stands out because of what it has achieved. By that I mean the production values, the finished look of the film. I hope what we have is something that looks like it was made on a far bigger budget by a far more experienced production team. I don't think it could have been made without so many of us pulling together. I think if you compare it to other films of its type (and there have been quite a few), it will stand out.

DC: You mentioned you were working on a very small budget. How small are we talking...and what was the filming schedule for The Dead Inside?

AG: The budget was around 15 thousand pounds (about $23,000 US). A lot of it came from our student loans, and all the money was raised by myself and Julian. Originally we planned to shoot every weekend over the first summer after we finished university, but this proved to be overly optimistic. In the end we ran out of time and money, but we picked up where we left off in the spring of 2011 and finished shooting this summer. We just had to spread our shoot across a year as everyone was working for free and had other commitments, but we got the job done!

DC: What about the script for The Dead Inside do you feel is particularly intriguing?

AG: We tried to make the script feel as realistic as possible. It took us over a year to write, and we were constantly asking ourselves how the characters would respond to the events unfolding around them. We started with a large group of characters and opted for a multi-strand approach when it came to the initial outbreak, following the story of multiple characters as they struggled to survive the first day or so. I think this gives the film an extra element as a lot of zombie films have a single lead character from beginning to end. We also wanted to get away from the Hollywood over-the-top approach when it came to writing the dialogue and the overall story structure. We didn’t want any larger than life characters, no heroes, no villains, no clichés. Just an ordinary group of believable characters subjected to extraordinary circumstances, and I hope we achieved this.

SM: As an actor, when you first read a script, it should grab your imagination like a good book. This script did that. The characters are well crafted, and I was impressed as it comes from two young guys as their first feature script. For me, even now that I know the story frontward and backward, it is still a page-turner.

Exclusive: Andrew Gilbert and Simon Mathews Talk The Dead Inside

DC: Speaking of make-up, zombie films obviously require a lot of F/X. How was this handled on a limited budget?

AG: We made some big mistakes early on and learned some valuable lessons. We set aside a huge portion of our budget for F/X and didn’t see a great return on our investment. I think it’s a VERY steep learning curve at this stage of our career, and the one lesson I had to learn the hardest way is always get contracts signed before anyone steps foot on set. Although saying that, we made some great contacts whilst filming, and luckily for us our part-time DOP had a lot of experience in F/X make-up, as did one of the lead actors, which saved us on more than one occasion!

SM: Everyone on the film basically did it for expenses (another example of what a good script can get you to do!), and so there was money for make-up, but a lot of it was just ingenuity in creating what we needed. Once you know a few tricks, it's amazing what you can create! I stepped in on FX and make-up. At one point on a major zombie scene, one of our zombie volunteers actually stepped up as she was a make-up artist with a passion for things undead and had her kit in her car with her!

DC: There is a strong military presence in the trailers for the film. This certainly brings to mind 28 Days/Weeks Later, in which the brute force of the military becomes as menacing to the survivors as the zombies themselves. Is this also the case in The Dead Inside? Is the military more of a threat than the zombies or more of a friendly presence?

AG: I think the military’s role in the event of a zombie outbreak is almost always portrayed in a bad light. Whether they have sinister intentions from the outset or whether they go rogue at the first sign of trouble, they always seem to be the bad guys. I’ve always thought that in the wake of the inevitable zombie apocalypse when the shackles of society are removed, the military would be the last people to lose their composure given all the training they have been through and the discipline that’s instilled in them. So they are definitely more of a force for good in The Dead Inside, although saying that, accidents can happen!

SM: The military presence is just one strand to the story, and this, along with the others, knits together to form the film as a whole. While we were filming, I certainly never thought of their presence in an oppressive way. In fact it's more about the people than what they do as a job.

    Synopsis:
A crap night out just got a fair bit worse: It's the end of the world! The undead are out in force, roaming the streets and devouring all who get in their way. Shot in a realistic style, The Dead Inside looks at a very human reaction to a barely human enemy. A group of soldiers, civilians and (holy crap!) teenagers hole up in a local school for protection from the undead hordes outside. Food is running low, morale doubly so. Tensions are high and things are looking bad when a stranger arrives outside the gate... then they get a whole lot worse.

Slamdance 2012: Comforting Skin - The Girl with the Scary Tattoo

While Sundance usually gets all of the January film festival love, we'd be remiss if we didn't keep an eye on the Slamdance Film Festival, too. Speaking of which, the first genre offering has been announced, and we've got the trailer and artwork for you right here. Dig it!

Below you'll find the goods on Derek Franson's indie flick Comforting Skin. Victoria Bidewell, Tygh Ruyan, Jane Sowerby, and Phil Granger star.

    Synopsis
Awkward, average looking, and lacking any real self-confidence, Koffie has always felt she neither fits in nor stands out. These insecurities caused her to move around in dangerous circles, exhibit destructive impulses, and lie uncontrollably. But now she thinks she has turned the page…

Koffie’s life is in transition. She has stopped peddling drugs for her ex-boyfriend, Allan, and now works three minimum wage jobs. She has been taken under the wing of a neighbor named Synthia, a club-hopping Barbie at the end of her shelf-life. Koffie has even begun to reconnect with her estranged family.

The only constant in this time of change is Koffie’s childhood best friend, Nathan, a sociophobe who has been her conscience in times of need. In return Koffie has always acted as his lifeline to the outside world, doing his errands, and even taking it upon herself to cure his phobia of people by slowly re-introducing him into society. Indeed her life is full of promise.

But try as she might to keep herself busy, Nathan’s demands, Allan’s endless female conquests, and existing in Synthia’s shadow do nothing to embolden Koffie’s sense of self-importance. Escaping the rain one dreary night, Koffie finds herself within the warm shelter of a tattoo parlor starving yet again to feel special. When asked what she wants, the only answer to pass her lips as she gazes the wall of tattoo designs is to have ‘something unique’. Inevitably, the act of getting a tattoo does little to fill Koffie’s insatiable void. In the weeks that follow she spirals ever downward and ultimately finds herself standing at a precipice. Koffie does not want to go on. So she places a blade to her wrist. And begins to press. But unlike the many times before where she’s done so for attention, this time she does so without restraint…

And during this darkest moment the tattoo comes to life on her skin.

With a soothing whisper and an electrifying touch never experienced, the tattoo stops her. Immediately her desire for death is replaced by a thirst for life. Crazy though she may be, Koffie does not care. Slithering and pulsating, the tattoo shifts and dances on her skin like nothing she’s ever felt. It knows every inch of her. Its embrace is overwhelming. Koffie is enraptured.

Disappearing into a world of sensory pleasures, Koffie’s surreal relationship with her tattoo eventually has its casualties. First affected is the fragile relationship with her family. Next the usually self-centered Synthia finds herself both curious and resentful of Koffie’s newfound happiness. And most tragically a rift between Koffie and Nathan begins to form. As much as she cares for Nathan, Koffie is convinced by the tattoo to wean herself from Nathan, leaving him alone and isolated. ‘It’s our time to be selfish,’ the tattoo argues, ‘our time to enjoy life!’

Koffie quickly learns, however, even the most unique relationships can become stale and confining. Before long the tattoo has stripped away all she had of an identity and covets her completely, sabotaging any relationships that get in the way. Monotony and mistrust eventually lead to a wandering curiosity in others, jealousy ignites into cruelty and violence. For once the tattoo realizes if ever there comes a time where it’s not needed, that it would cease to exist, it does everything in its power to ensure Koffie will always need it.

Fearful for her life, Koffie finally turns back to Nathan and reveals her secret. But Nathan is neither convinced nor prepared for how strong a hold the tattoo has on her and soon finds himself in great danger as well.

In the end Koffie must look to herself for salvation. But how do you end a relationship existing in your heart, your mind, and played out on your skin?

Two More Names Being Floated for Possible Roles in Oldboy Remake

Two More Names Being Floated for Possible Roles in Oldboy Remake: Clive Owen and Mia WasikowskaWe've had some pretty mixed emotions about the upcoming Spike Lee-helmed remake of the Korean revenge classic Oldboy, but with the recent news of two more names that are circling roles in the production, we have to admit our interest level is rising. Read on for the details!

Twitch is reporting that Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland, The Kids Are All Right) has been offered the role of Marie, the female lead of the gritty thriller, which was previously turned down by Rooney Mara.

If she accepts, Wasikowska will be playing opposite Josh Brolin in the lead as a man imprisoned against his will and with no explanation for years before he is released and sets out to find and take revenge on his captor.

The villain's role, originally offered to Colin Firth, is now apparently Clive Owen's (pictured above; Intruders, Children of Men) to accept or decline. Considering he and Lee have history (they worked together on The Inside Man), we'd say he's a shoo-in.

If these two newest additions to the cast do come to fruition, we'll be there opening day for sure! Keep it here for more as it comes!

Home Video Trailer for Cold Sweat Ready to Induce the Chills

Twas the Monday before Christmas, and all through the Net, tons of video content is here, no need to fret! It's a good thing that this is notoriously one of the slowest work weeks of the year! If only because we know you're just sitting there killing time. Next on tap? The home video trailer for Adrián García Bogliano's horror flick Cold Sweat (Sudor Frío)!

    From the Press Release
Barely 30 years old, writer-director Adrián García Bogliano has more than a dozen horror features and short films under his belt, and he tops himself in COLD SWEAT, a pulse-pounding horror thriller whose title aptly describes what it produces in audiences. A sensation at the 2011 SXSW festival, it will chill the bones of home viewers when it arrives on DVD on January 17, 2012, from Dark Sky Films and MPI Media Group. It carries an SRP of $24.98.

With films like 36 Steps, I’ll Never Die Alone, Watch ’em Die, and Rooms for Tourists, Bogliano has quickly established himself as a master whose work transcends the limits of horror and suspense – even garnering a Critic’s Choice notice in The New York Times. COLD SWEAT may be his most effective effort to date.

When Roman’s girlfriend Jackie disappears, he expects to find her in the arms of another man. And, with the help of a friend, find her he does – but there is no lover on the scene, only a pair of demented old men keeping her locked away in the basement of their crumbling mansion. Armed with wild-eyed, reactionary political ideals and case after case of decades-old and highly unstable explosives, the villainous duo are conducting illicit experiments on a string of young women lured to their home via the Internet. With Jackie doused in nitroglycerine, her every step toward escape is fraught with the possibility of sudden death. If Roman cannot free his young love, she is likely to end up in pieces.

A delirious, old-school horror picture with the most memorable villains in years at its core, COLD SWEAT was a huge hit at the SXSW festival thanks to its creator’s wild imagination and sense of showmanship. Loaded with memorable characters and stylish action, it’s a shocker that never fails to entertain.

Starring Facundo Espinosa (The Motorcycle Diaries), Marina Glezer (Valentin), and Camila Velasco as the unfortunate girlfriend who must very carefully strip off all of her nitro-soaked clothes, COLD SWEAT has been called “a highly volatile mix of The Wages of Fear (1953) and ‘torture porn’ tropes, with an uncomfortable grounding in political reality” (Anton Bitel, Sight and Sound), whose director “constructs suspense so skillfully here” (Fred Topel, Screen Junkies).

Frequently I'm asked if I ever plan on having kids. I point to the Bad Seed, Children of the Corn, The Children, The Exorcist, and of course The Omen as to why my answer is always definitively no. I'd point to Orphan, too, but I'm not sure a commie midget who sounds like Dracula counts. In any event, yet another trailer is here for you! Check it out!

Coming to us from Filmax is Childish Games starring Juan Diego Botto, Barbara Lennie, and Marcia Perez. It's directed by Antonio Chavarrías from his own screenplay.

Filmax has now locked a March 9, 2012, date for the Spanish thriller and has released the following trailer. It will premiere at the 2012 Berlin market.

    Synopsis
Daniel receives an unexpected, and unwanted, visit from a friend whom he hasn't seen since his childhood. His friend is obsessed with his daughter and insists that Daniel has to meet her. Daniel does his best to get rid of him and tries to forget the incident. That same night his friend commits suicide.

Laura, Daniel's wife, suggests they go to his friend's funeral. There they meet his daughter, a little girl, barely seven years old, who since the death of her father has been taken into foster care. Laura convinces all parties that the best thing is for the little girl to go and stay with them.

But the little girl's presence in the house starts to have an adverse effect on the couple when fears and memories which Daniel thought he had long since buried start to come creeping back inside his head. The same obsessions and fears that took the life of his friend start to take control of Daniel. A growing sense of isolation engulfs Daniel in the house, which, until the arrival of the little girl, he had thought belonged to him.

Official Trailer Arrives for Wrath of the Titans

From what we've seen and heard so far with regard to Jonathan Liebesman's Wrath of the Titans, we've remained hopefully optimistic; and now that an official trailer is here, we'll all have a better idea of what's in store for us in this sequel that hardly anybody was clamoring for. Check it out, and let us know what you think!

Sam Worthington reprise his role as Perseus alongside Ralph Fiennes as Hades, Liam Neeson as Zeus, and Gemma Arterton as Io. Edgar Ramirez (as god of war Ares), Danny Huston (as god of the sea Poseidon), Bill Nighy (as the fallen god Hephaestus), Rosamund Pike (as Queen Andromeda), and Toby Kebbell (as Poseidon's demigod son Agenor) also star.

Look for Jonathan Liebesman's Wrath of the Titans in theatres on March 30th, 2012, from Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. in, of course, 3D.

    Synopsis
A decade after his heroic defeat of the monstrous Kraken, Perseus—the demigod son of Zeus—is attempting to live a quieter life as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10-year old son, Helius.

Meanwhile, a struggle for supremacy rages between the gods and the Titans. Dangerously weakened by humanity’s lack of devotion, the gods are losing control of the imprisoned Titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos, father of the long-ruling brothers Zeus, Hades and Poseidon. The triumvirate had overthrown their powerful father long ago, leaving him to rot in the gloomy abyss of Tartarus, a dungeon that lies deep within the cavernous underworld.

Perseus cannot ignore his true calling when Hades, along with Zeus’ godly son, Ares (Edgar Ramírez), switch loyalty and make a deal with Kronos to capture Zeus. The Titans’ strength grows stronger as Zeus’ remaining godly powers are siphoned, and hell is unleashed on earth.

Enlisting the help of the warrior Queen Andromeda (Rosamund Pike), Poseidon’s demigod son, Argenor (Toby Kebbell), and fallen god Hephaestus (Bill Nighy), Perseus bravely embarks on a treacherous quest into the underworld to rescue Zeus, overthrow the Titans and save mankind.
