Official Teaser Trailer Premiere - Night of the Living Dead: Resurrection

$

The latest tribute to George A. Romero's 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead will be emerging from the grave in the UK in 2012, and we've got a teaser trailer of what's to come right here for you. Dig it!

From the Press Release:
North Bank Entertainment, the UK production company behind Ruggero Deodato’s forthcoming ‘The House on the Edge of the Park Part II’, has teamed up with Independent Moving Pictures and Mad Science Films to produce NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD: RESURRECTION, a British version of the 1968 horror classic.

The film is produced by Andrew Jones and is the debut feature of director James Plumb, who has previously helmed a number of award-winning short films. The script was co-written by James Plumb and Andrew Jones. Rob Graham of Independent Moving Pictures is the executive producer.

Producer Andrew Jones: “NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD: RESURRECTION is aiming to serve as an entertaining companion piece to the original film rather than attempting to do the impossible and improve on it. This project is being produced by a group of filmmakers who are genuine fans of the horror genre. We have fresh ideas for how to revitalise the zombie sub-genre and have created a story that combines modern elements with the classic premise. We are sure genre fans will be happy to see a modern horror film which focuses on genuine suspense and tension, utilises practical FX rather than CGI, and provides characters that the audience will actually care about.”

Director James Plumb: "In 1968 George Romero revolutionised both the horror genre and low budget, independent filmmaking with his film Night of the Living Dead. It is only fitting that Night of the Living Dead: Resurrection is to be made in a truly independent, low budget fashion, rather than become yet another glossy, sanitised Hollywood remake."

Principal photography began on September 24th, 2011. The film is being shot on location in Carmarthenshire, Swansea, and Cardiff in South Wales, UK.

Synopsis:
In 2012 the deceased have risen from their graves with only one instinct: to feed on the living. As academics speculate on the scientific cause of the phenomena, theologians point to the Armageddon foretold in the Book of Revelation. As the cities are overrun and civilization crumbles, a family take refuge from the undead army in an isolated farmhouse in West Wales. But the greatest threat is already among them.

Two New Stills From Pascal Laugier's The Tall Man

We know that every time we mention this flick, the hearts of Phantasm fans everywhere break just a little bit. Sorry, but it has nothing to do with the famed Don Coscarelli franchise. That being said, two more fresh pieces of eye candy have come our way for Pascal Laugier's latest flick, The Tall Man, and it's our duty to share!

Jessica Biel, Stephen McHattie, William B. Davis, Samantha Ferris, Jodelle Ferland, and Jakob Davies star.

Look for more on this one soon!

Synopsis:
Cold Rock, USA - A darkness hovers upon the town. Children have gone missing over the years, leaving neither a clue nor a witness. Superstitious locals talk of The Tall Man, a legendary, mysterious dark figure who takes children away, never to be seen again.

Julia (Jessica Biel) is a nurse living in Cold Rock who doesn't believe in legends. Until one night, waking up with an eerie feeling, she goes to her son's bedroom and finds his bed empty. Rushing downstairs, she stops dead in her tracks: A huge dark figure stands in the entrance holding her son, David. Driven by pure instinct, Julia rushes after them, willing to do whatever it takes to get her son back. The chase is on and with it the quest for answers. Who is The Tall Man? What becomes of the children?

Conceived as a "woman in jeopardy" movie - an outdoor Panic Room, The Tall Man is a suspenseful thriller in the vein of M. Night Shyamalan's earlier films. Clothed in the myth of the boogeymen and monsters born of the folklore common to all cultures, it's a story of the haunting secrets that hide behind closed doors.

Big Flesh-Eating Bees Swarm in the Horror Short The Nest

$

Usually when you think about death by killer bees, you envision people getting stung to death. In the atmospheric horror short The Nest, a rancher must fight to survive when a swarm of over-sized flesh-eating bees escape from a beekeeper who depends on their honey to keep her diner in business. Man-eating bees might sound like the premise for a Syfy flick, but judging by the trailer, this short is creepier and more atmospheric than you would expect.

Undead Backbrain got the exclusive word on Austin, Texas filmmaker Tim Zwica's upcoming horror short The Nest. Zwica has spent most of his career working in video games so he certainly knows his way around computer effects. Zwica does multiple duty as director, writer, producer, editor, and visual effects coordinator for his short film debut.

Synopsis:
Hank, a horse breeder, has discovered one of his mares lying dead in his pasture, reduced to a skeleton overnight.

He finds Ray, a county farm inspector, in the local diner and enlists him to help solve the mystery. Eleanore, the owner of the diner, is wary of their mission. She catches a pair of Goth girls stealing her honey from the table and orders her mute son, Dizzy, to detain them.

She sentences them to death and has Dizzy dump them into a well in the backyard of the diner. The well is infested with a swarm of savage flesh-eating bees who awaken with Dizzy’s banging on the hatch and soon devour the girls in a matter of seconds. However, Dizzy has damaged the hatch, and one bee escapes before it can be repaired. The bee finds Hank working in his field and chases him into his barn, where he receives a call from Ray, who is driving to Hank’s ranch. The rest of the swarm escapes and chases another of Hank’s horses out onto the road, where they devour it in mid pursuit, leaving its bones scattered on Ray’s windshield.

Ray relates the event to Hank after retreating to the diner lot. Hank hears him being abducted by Dizzy and sets out to the diner to rescue him. Hank is caught off-guard by Eleanore and knocked unconscious. He and Ray both end up in the well, where they must fight for their very survival.

Zwica plans to take the very polished looking short to film festivals next year. Here's the rather eerie trailer for The Nest.

One question: If it's about killer bees, shouldn't it be called The Hive instead of The Nest?

The Internet Braces for the Horrors of the Possible Passing of the SOPA Bill

$
0
0

We already have to endure the censorship of our movies, and now we are possibly going to have to contend with the censorship of our Internet. This is strange and truly frightening news we feel compelled to make you aware of. Read on and hope for the best.

What is SOPA? Known as the "Stop Online Piracy Act" in full, SOPA stands ready to make censorship of the Internet a matter of law.

But wait a second; isn't piracy bad? We certainly think so. And we support the call for better tools to protect intellectual property rights.

So why is SOPA a bad thing? Glad you asked. If this bill passes, sites like ours could be shut down without notice or, even worse, sued for any of the following reasons:

- Linking to or covering infringing work: Including but not limited to leaked artwork, trailers, screenplays. Even screenshots used in our news coverage and reviews.

- Hosting supplemental audio commentaries like we did for Joe Lynch with his lost commentary track from Wrong Turn 2.

- Reusing video clips and sound bytes as in our retrospectives:

- Sharing links to remixes and funny edits of movies:

Now obviously those videos fall under fair use, you say. We agree. But SOPA is a shoot first, ask questions later kind of bill. There is little to no due process afforded in the legislation.

- Links to torrent sites or streaming sites:

We do not post links to torrent sites ourselves. But if a link were to be found on our site, whether posted as spam by a robot or a user in a comment or message board post, we could be shut down without warning.

While we try our best to prevent spam on this site, from time to time these bots do get through our defenses. Furthermore, a lot of torrent sites steal our images of DVD cover art against our knowledge. They link to our images so that they don't have to pay for the hosting themselves. We block as many as we can from doing this, but it is difficult to catch. Sadly, according to this bill, we can be shut down because we are hosting the images even though they are being used without our knowledge.

Not only is all that considered a criminal act by this bill, but even more startling is that YOU the user could be put in jail for up to 5 years for posting or sharing this content ANYWHERE.

This bill will require us to censor every single comment or post on this site as well as monitor every single use of a file hosted by our site or risk having our revenue stripped away, our site blocked, or being outright sued.

Real-Life Horror: Dutch TV Hosts Go Cannibal and Eat Each Other's Flesh

When a story as juicy as this one crosses our desks, even if it's not related to a specific horror movie or other type of project, we just can't let it go by without commenting on it. Meet Dennis Storm and Valerio Zeno, two Dutch TV show hosts who dined on each other's flesh as part of a new show on BNN called “Proefkonijnen” or, as its title translates, “Test Rabbits.”

The punchline of the show is to get really simple answers [to] stupid questions, such as, ‘Can you shave with ketchup?’ or ‘Can you drive blind?’” Storm said. “And we wanted to find out how human flesh tasted.” So part of Storm’s left butt cheek was carved out by a surgeon while Zeno opted to have a piece of his abdomen removed, and then they had it cooked up by a top chef. “The chef cooked it in a frying pan with sunflower oil,” Storm added. “We didn’t add any salt or pepper because we wanted to know what it tasted like.

Nothing is really that special when you’re talking about the taste of the meat,” Storm told ABC News, “but it is weird to look into the eyes of a friend when you are chewing on his belly.

If you happen to live in the area, the cannibalistic episode airs Wednesday in the Netherlands. What will they think of next?

Dangerously weakened by humanity’s lack of devotion, the gods are losing control of the imprisoned Titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos, father of the long-ruling brothers Zeus, Hades and Poseidon. The triumvirate had overthrown their powerful father long ago, leaving him to rot in the gloomy abyss of Tartarus, a dungeon that lies deep within the cavernous underworld.

Perseus cannot ignore his true calling when Hades, along with Zeus’ godly son, Ares (Edgar Ramírez), switch loyalty and make a deal with Kronos to capture Zeus. The Titans’ strength grows stronger as Zeus’ remaining godly powers are siphoned, and hell is unleashed on earth.

Enlisting the help of the warrior Queen Andromeda (Rosamund Pike), Poseidon’s demigod son, Argenor (Toby Kebbell), and fallen god Hephaestus (Bill Nighy), Perseus bravely embarks on a treacherous quest into the underworld to rescue Zeus, overthrow the Titans and save mankind.

Doesn't it always seem like when one string of murders happens in a small town, inevitably another slew of murders will happen, maybe on the anniversary of the original crimes, maybe by a copycat killer. Always with some kind of link to the original brutality. And here we have that unfortunate situation happening again in Cider Springs Slaughter, the feature film due for release in April 2012.

Taylor McPartland and Danny Torres penned this film, also known as The Absents. Jason Durdon directs and it stars Austin Anderson, Chelese Belmont, Elizabeth Saydah, Mike Boyer, Ryan Watson and Wes Scarpias. Check out the trailer below. The story is reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine or even Scream. See what you think.

Also, check out the film's Facebook page.

Synopsis
Thirty years ago the small town of Cider Springs was rocked by a series of brutal murders, for which the killer was never found. But when a group of high school students discover the killer’s infamous mask in their history teacher’s possession, questions start to fly – and the killings resume.

Why is it that people insist on going where they don't belong? We've got to know our limitations, people. Don't go hiking in Iran or North Korea. Don't go sightseeing in Detroit if you don't know your way around, and stay out of the bayou if you're not a crocodile hunter. It's all about respecting boundaries. And the trailer of the upcoming film Zydeco illustrates this argument very well.

Below we've got the first look at the full-length trailer, which has a real Pumpkinhead feel to it. Basically the villagers conjure the help of a supernatural being to alleviate an outside threat. The film is directed by David Noble and is the first feature film from Stormfront Entertainment.

Dig the trailer below, and keep an eye out for future updates! Thanks to DC reader Avery for the heads-up!

Synopsis
Erin McCoy (Courtney Shay Young) and Rae Johnson (LaTasha Williams) travel deep into Central Louisiana sightseeing when they soon become lost. The two are guided by a local merchant (William Hartley) to the town psychic (Rhonda Schaubert) for some unique local culture, but the visit turns dangerous immediately when they encounter the Zydeco (Elgin Foster)!

The Six Slays of Christmas - Day Two

$
0
0

Welcome back to the second entry of Dread Central's Six Slays of Christmas feature! We're now just five little days away from the year's biggest holiday season, and to celebrate the coming of Saint Nick (or whomever you believe in), we'll be taking a look at a different yuletide horror flick each day until the 25th! Think of it as a cinema crazed Advent calendar!

I know Christmas is right around the corner and many of you are out there doing some last-minute shopping. Let me give you one piece of advice. Whatever you do, do not buy some weird looking animal you've never seen before from a guy in Chinatown with the worst cataract you've ever seen. If you need a gift, just buy a copy of Arkham City or something skimpy from Victoria's Secret (unless it's for your mother, then neither of those gifts seems very appropriate unless she's a big-time gamer or 'mature' adult film actress). Either way ... just stay out of Chinatown.

The Six Slays of Christmas - Day Two

From the intro of the film, as the mellow voice of Hoyt Axton welcomes us into the movie, you can't help but fall in love with Gremlins. And how can you help it when they bring out the face of uber-cuteness, Gizmo the Mogwai (voiced by Howie Mandel), right off the bat. It's as if the filmmakers said, "We need a personification of cute..." and Gizmo was created. Cute look, cute voice, cute name ... as long as you follow the rules.

As we all know, Billy (Zach Galligan) does his best to follow the rules for taking care of the Mogwai (avoid bright light; don't get them wet; and never, ever feed them after midnight), and he's doing a good job until the young Corey Feldman comes in and spills water all over the thing. That's when the trouble begins. Is it so hard not to get a Mogwai wet? The old man in Chinatown didn't seem to have a problem doing it. Perhaps some clothes for Gizmo wouldn't have been a bad idea. Maybe a rain slicker to wear around?

Regardless, we soon meet Stripe, who has to be the biggest dickhead puppet since Oscar the Grouch. With nothing but bad intentions in mind, Stripe and his merry band of asshole Mogwais begin to make life miserable for Gizmo, Billy and the neighborhood in general. And this mayhem leads to one of the most memorable scenes from the film. After the big change, Billy's mother (played by Frances Lee McClain) is being attacked by gremlins and she's forced to fight back (and she proves to be quite efficient at eliminating the gruesome little creatures). In the span of just a few moments, Mrs. Peltzer jams one gremlin in a blender, stabs the holy hell out of another with a butcher knife and (the piece de resistance) stuffs one in the microwave and…splat!

As enjoyable as Gremlins is, I'm sure you've never thought of it as a ground-breaking film, but in fact, there is something you see every time you go to the theater that Gremlins had a big hand in creating. Very much due to that gremlin exploding in the microwave, some moviegoers complained that the film's PG rating was a bit misleading. In response to the issue, producer Steven Spielberg suggested the MPAA reform their rating system to account for a film that was too intense to be rated PG but not R material. Two months later PG-13 was born.

And, of course, we all loved the great details of the film. Like Polly Holliday (Flo from "Alice" ... anyone remember that show?) doing her best Mrs. Gulch impression as the completely bitchy Ruby Deagle. She was involved in another great scene when the gremlin Christmas carolers showed up at her house and she attempted to escape in a lift chair that had been "modified" by the little green beasties, launching her up through the roof of the house. Classic. The flasher gremlin, the break-dancer and the entire Snow White scene were all awesome. Hugely entertaining.

And if you need a little disturbing family drama to complete your holiday viewing experience, Gremlins throws in the twisted story of how Kate's (Phoebe Cates) father got himself wedged in the chimney playing St. Nick and died there. If Santa could do it, then so could the Grinch…but I guess Kate's dad was a bit too wide.

Gremlins is a great holiday film for all ages (at least ages 13 and up according to the MPAA). While you're watching, check for a couple of nods to Indiana Jones and appearances by Spielberg and Tom Bergeron.

There you have it, The Six Slays of Christmas - Number Two ... Gremlins.

Not a day has past since Foy uncovered the Asylum endeavor Nazis at the Center of the Earth that we haven't prayed to the video gods that it lives up to the zaniness of its moniker. Another piece of the puzzle has been uncovered in the form of the official artwork and we have it for you right here!

Dominique Swain and Gary Busey are the only hope to save global democracy from the threat of subterranean subhuman SS stormtroopers preparing to launch a Fourth Reich.

Synopsis:
Researchers in Antarctica are abducted by a team of masked stormtroopers. They are dragged deep underground to a hidden continent in the center of the earth. Here Nazi survivors, their bodies a horrifying patchwork of decaying and regenerated flesh, are planning for the revival of the Third Reich.

Nazis at the Center of the Earth marks the directorial debut of longtime Asylum FX supervisor Joe Lawson and was scripted by another Asylum stalwart, Paul Bales.

The DVD/Blu-ray/VOD aren’t due until April 24th, but they have posted a whole bunch of stills from the just-wrapped production. You’ll find several below and even more from this (and other current Asylum projects) if you click here.

New Trailer Takes You Into The Theatre Bizarre

It's trailer time, kids, and this one has been a long time coming! Sit back, relax, make sure no one is looking, and get ready for your first inside look at the horrific perversions of The Theatre Bizarre!

W2 Media has announced that it will release the horror anthology in New York, Los Angeles, and other select markets on January 27th, 2012.

Severin Films and France’s Metaluna Productions co-produced the original The Theatre Bizarre (positive Fantasia review here), a modern horror anthology inspired by the over-the-top shocks of Paris’ early 20th century ‘Theatre du Grand Guignol,’ featuring films by directors Douglas Buck, Buddy Giovinazzo, David Gregory, Karim Hussain, Jeremy Kasten, Tom Savini, and Richard Stanley. The film’s original producing team will also produce the sequel.

Generating major buzz throughout the horror festival circuit and even causing audience members to pass out during screenings, The Theatre Bizarre (somewhat different Film4 FrightFest review here) is comprised of seven separate and disturbing chapters from seven cutting-edge genre directors enlisted from around the world and granted total creative freedom.

Down a seedy city street, a young woman is obsessed with what appears to be a long abandoned theatre. One night she sees the front door slightly ajar and impulsively decides to sneak inside. But there in the vast, eerie auditorium, a show unlike any other unfolds before her eyes. Its host is an odd marionette-like man who will introduce her to six tales of the bizarre: A couple traveling in a remote part of the French Pyrenees crosses paths with a lustful witch; a paranoid lover faces the wrath of a partner who has been pushed to her limit; the Freudian dreams of an unfaithful husband blur the lines between fantasy and reality; the horrors of the real world are interpreted through the mind of a child; a woman addicted to other people's memories gets her fix through the fluid of her victims’ eyeballs; and a perverse obsession with sweets turns sour for a couple in too deep. But as the stories unfold, something strange is happening to the woman. Something irreversible and horrific. Something that awaits its next audience in THE THEATRE BIZARRE.
