We Are What We Are, the acclaimed new masterpiece from director Jim Mickle, arrives December 17th on VOD and look for it on Blu-ray and DVD on January 7, 2014, from Entertainment One (eOne).

Synopsis
A seemingly wholesome and benevolent family, the Parkers have always kept to themselves, and for good reason. Behind closed doors, patriarch Frank (Bill Sage; Mysterious Skin, American Psycho) rules his family with a rigorous fervor, determined to keep his ancestral customs intact at any cost. As a torrential rainstorm moves into the area, tragedy strikes and his daughters, Iris (Ambyr Childers; The Master, Gangster Squad) and Rose (Julia Garner; The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Martha Marcy May Marlene), are forced to assume responsibilities that extend beyond those of a typical family.

As the unrelenting downpour continues to flood their small town, the local authorities begin to uncover clues that bring them closer to the secret that the Parkers have held closely for so many years. In his vivid re-imagining of the 2010 Mexican film of the same name, director Jim Mickle (Mulberry Street, Stake Land) paints a gruesome and suspenseful portrait of an introverted family struggling to keep their macabre traditions alive, giving us something we can really sink our teeth into.

Also starring in this tension-filled shocker are Michael Parks (Kill Bill, "Twin Peaks"), Kelly McGillis (Top Gun, Witness, The Innkeepers) and Kassie DePaiva ("One Life to Live").

Grimmfest Favourite The Whisperer in Darkness Now Available in the UK

Our friends at Grimm Up North, in collaboration with The Horror Show, have announced the UK release of H.P. Lovecraft's The Whisperer in Darkness, available now. Read on for the details of this Christmas treat!

From the Press Release:
Grimmfest festival favourite H.P. Lovecraft’s The Whisperer in Darkness is finally available in the UK to stream or download at Horrorshow.TV, the UK’s new home for watching all the latest horror movie releases.

Completed in 2012, THE WHISPERER IN DARKNESS was produced as a labour of love by the H.P. Lovecraft Society in their continuing mission to faithfully adapt Lovecraft’s films in the style from the era they were born in, as seen in 2005’s silent expressionist picture The Call of Cthulu. THE WHISPERER IN DARKNESS, directed by Sean Branney, is considered by many critics to be the most authentic movie adaptation of Lovecraft’s writing and is presented in sumptuous vintage style. The film utilises the cinematic technique Mythoscope, which creates the feel of vintage motion pictures through modern techniques to provide elegant black and white cinematography, making THE WHISPERER IN DARKNESS look and feel like a 1930’s classic Universal horror movie akin to Frankenstein, Dracula, and King Kong.

THE WHISPERER IN DARKNESS is based on Lovecraft’s science fiction/horror novella which was originally published in 1931. The film follows the weird journey of real life folklore professor of the Miskatonic University, Albert Wilmarth (Matt Foyer), as he delves into the legends of strange creatures that are said to inhabit the most remote mountains of Vermont. After farmer Henry Akeley (Barry Lynch) sends tales and photographs of otherworldly footprints and grotesque creatures found in surrounding rivers, Wilmarth arrives in Vermont to uncover the terrifying truths behind these legends, which extend to visiting strangers from outer space and the darkest pits of hell.

The Horror Show is a brand new digital streaming service exclusively for horror fans. As well as the short films offered as part of their 'Short Stack', they will be adding new horror features from well known favourites to lesser known films. This is the first of a series of Grimmfest festival films to be made available on the website with more great movies coming soon under the Grimmfest banner.

Check out the film's poster, trailer, and a few stills below. For more info visit the official Grimm Up North website, befriend them on Facebook, and follow them on Twitter.

Celebrating the Tasty, Tasty Human: Five Cannibal Film Favorites

Celebrating the Tasty, Tasty Human: Five Cannibal Film FavoritesThe American remake of We Are What We Are (review) hits VOD on December 17, and while the Mexican thriller of the same name is superior, Jim Mickle’s take on ritualistic cannibalism is a damned fine film in its own right and certainly one of the better cannibal-centric movies to come out recently.

Making a list of the “best” cannibal movies out there is a fool’s errand, if only because it invariably leads to someone saying I have no idea what I’m talking about because I left this film or that film off the list, prompting me to question everything I know and love. You proud of yourself now?

Therefore, instead of a “Best Cannibal Films” list, I’m treating you to a list of my favorite cannibal-centric movies. And no, Cannibal Holocaust is not on the list ‘cause that movie is gross and made me leave the room twice while watching it. And I sat through the entirety of From Justin the Kelly so you know it must have been vile enough if it made me walk out.

Celebrating the Tasty, Tasty Human: Five Cannibal Film Favorites

Ravenous: I don’t care what anyone says; Antonia Bird’s incredibly underrated film Ravenous is the best cannibal movie ever made. A subtly brilliant critique of Catholicism by way of the Wendigo myth during the Mexican-American War, Ravenous follows Guy Pearce as Captain John Boyd, a soldier relocated to a remote outpost in the Sierra Nevadas. While there, he and his new motley crew are visited by the seemingly starving Colqhoun, played by Robert Carlyle, who tells a tale of murder and cannibalism. Michael Nyman and Damon Albarn’s beautiful score was one of the first soundtracks I ever purchased (the second was Moulin Rouge!‘cause fuck you, that movie is awesome) and remains a favorite of many to this day. Sadly, director Antonia Bird, who replaced the film’s original helmer at the insistence of Carlyle, recently passed away so go watch this one in her honor.

Frontiere(s): Xavier Gens’ French thriller, in which a group of criminals escaping riots end up in the clutches of a group of cannibalistic neo-Nazis, is one of my favorites. Excessively violent and filled to the brim with the requisite blood and guts, the film pays direct homage to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in one of its most amazing scenes. Preceding it, however, is yet another absolutely gut-wrenching moment involving the protagonist, played by Karina Testa, and the young actress Maude Forget, who tearfully explains how she came to be involved with the cannibal clan. Through the blood and gore that pervade the film is an absolutely beautiful movie filled with incredible performances, and it should not be missed.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: Inspired in part by prolific serial killer Ed Gein, Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is essential viewing, at least for me. While the cannibalistic tendencies of Leatherface and his family are more subdued, the film’s dinner scene, wherein the family gathers around the kitchen table with Sally, only to be served her friends by a transvestite Leatherface, has become one of the most iconic scenes in horror film history and thus cements this classic a spot on this list.

Cannibal: The Musical: About a decade ago I was home for Christmas break from college, and I watched Trey Parker’s Cannibal: The Musical every single day for two weeks. I know every song by heart and can quote almost the entire movie. Released by Troma, this is a pre-"South Park" film, though Cartman’s singing voice makes a special appearance if you listen closely enough. It’s hilarious and a cult favorite, and for the life of me I can’t understand why sing-a-longs don’t occur on a regular basis in Denver. I mean, seriously. Enough with Rocky Horror.

Alive: It’s not a horror film, I know, but Frank Marshall’s Alive, based on the true events of a Uruguayan rugby team that turns to cannibalism after their plane crashes in the Andes Mountains, is one of my favorite “cannibal” films (if you can accurately call it one).  It focuses on the depths man will go to when faced with the struggle to survive, and while it’s certainly not a scary film, the approach toward cannibalism is as real as it gets.

We Are What We Are, the acclaimed new masterpiece from director Jim Mickle, arrives December 17th on VOD; look for it on Blu-ray and DVD on January 7, 2014, from Entertainment One (eOne).

Get Smothered By This New TrailerThe first trailer is here for the new horror film from John Schneider (yes, that John Schneider of "Dukes of Hazzard fame). Smothered has a cast filled with a handful of beloved horror icons, who are all apparently playing themselves in it. Check it out!

    From the Press Release
When John R. Schneider wrote SMOTHERED, he wrote a reverse of the classic horror film model. Instead of a bunch of college-aged girls getting slaughtered by men in masks, his film features men of the mask getting slaughtered by a beautiful young vixen.

And, in a turn that will leave horror fans titillated, the film features a list of horror icons playing “themselves” in this “horroromedy” (horror/comedy) film with more humanity than you’d expect from a film where almost everyone dies.

The film, which stars Kane Hodder (Jason X, Hatchet), RA Milhailoff (Leatherface, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3), Bill Moseley (The Devil’s Rejects, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Don Shanks (Halloween 5, Ride with the Devil), Malcolm Danare (Christine, Ride with the Devil), Brea Grant (Halloween 2), and Amy Brassette (Ghost Shark) as well as New Orleans based talent Shanna Forrestall (The Last Exorcism, Southern Fried Homicide) and Dane Rhodes (The Last Exorcism 2), is a breath of fresh air in a genre that seems to be pumping out predictable films by the minute.

“These are the real guys, these are the real actors playing themselves for the most part, and that’s an element no one has explored before,”’ says John Schneider, the film’s writer and director.

Schneider, who became famous from his roles as Bo Duke in "The Dukes of Hazzard," Jonathan Kent in "Smallville," and more, started working on the other side of the camera since he wrote and directed the last episodes of the "Dukes" series many years ago.

Schneider developed the idea for Smothered from real life experiences at trade shows and hammered the script out last April, moving quickly into pre-production. The film was shot in south Louisiana in the summer of 2013, produced by John Schneider’s Fairlight Films.

The film is now in post and is working towards a late 2013 release date.

Upcoming Thriller to Be Set on Haunted Queen Mary Ship

Upcoming Thriller to be Set on Haunted Queen Mary ShipThough it's been retired since 1967, ocean liner Queen Mary has been a hotbed of paranormal activity over the years, crowned one of the top 10 most haunted places in America by Time Magazine in 2008. The perfect setting for a horror flick? You bet!

As reported by Variety, Ubiquity Studios is financing development and production of its first feature film, which will be set and filmed on the infamous Queen Mary.

"We’re calling it 'The Shining on a ship'," said Ubiquity CEO Chris Carmichael, who will exec produce along with Connie Jordan. Brett Tomberlin of Ubiquity Studios will produce along with Andrew Trapani and Brian Gilbert of Nine/8 Entertainment.

The untitled project will be written by Gary Dauberman, and shooting is set to begin in the spring of 2014.

The Queen Mary first sailed in 1936 and was the Cunard Line’s flagship until being commissioned as an allied troop transport following the outbreak of World War II. It was nicknamed “The Grey Ghost” for its ability to avoid Nazi U-boats, and Adolf Hitler offered $250,000 to anyone who could sink it.

In 1942 the ocean liner jackknifed her own escort ship but was unable to rescue 239 soldiers in the escort due to the presence of U-boats. In that same year, a 95-foot wave nearly capsized the Queen Mary while 16,000 soldiers were aboard — which inspired the movie The Poseidon Adventure, which was shot on the ship in 1971.

Filmmaker Damien Leone Talks All Hallows' Eve and More

Filmmaker Damien Leone Talks All Hallows' Eve and MoreFor those familiar with the grindhouse-inspired horror short “Terrifier”, the name Damien Leone might mean something to you - but the face you probably remember is that of Art the Clown. First introduced in another short called “The 9th Circle”, Art the Clown has developed into a remarkably simple but absolutely devilish character...

...who is one of the first new icons of fright from the internet age. Leone has springboarded his efforts into an anthology of sorts, combining his existing shorts with an all-new alien entry and a babysitter wraparound for the DVD, All Hallows' Eve, which is available for sale and rental now. Below, Leone talks about his road to success.

Dread Central: So, I know you’ve also got Frankenstein versus The Mummy coming out?

Damien Leone: Yes! Well, I’m leaving for New Mexico in a couple days, but it’s just a standalone Mummy film that I’m doing the make-up effects for. Then I come back from this one and go into pre-production on Frankenstein versus The Mummy, which I’m directing, writing, and doing the make-up effects for.

DC: It’s funny; when I got the request to interview you, I had already ordered All Hallows' Eve on DVD just as a fan. I think within a minute or two of each other I got the delivery confirmation from Amazon and the request to interview you! I’d seen “Terrifier” and “The 9th Circle”, I guess, a couple of years ago. I know the whole project was all created online through YouTube and email. Would you have ever been able to get this off the ground without technology? It’s definitely a unique model, and this kind of thing happens pretty rarely.

DL: Yeah, I don’t think so, honestly. If Jesse Baget, the producer, hadn’t reached out to me and hadn’t found “Terrifier” on YouTube, I would have probably done a Kickstarter thing. My intention wasn’t to make an anthology film. We still intend on making a full-length stand alone Art the Clown movie. This was just a reason to get “Terrifier” onto DVD and whip it into a feature just to get it out there to get more people familiar with Art the Clown and hopefully get a little bit more of a fanbase. When people ask me what do I recommend on becoming film kids or film students, I really tell them just make something really crazy and throw it on to YouTube. If it’s good, people will start talking about it. I think that’s how I got lucky.

DC: In total, there were five DP’s on this, is that right?

    DL: Five DP’s!

DC: That must be some kind of a record. Was it difficult to have All Hallows' Eve have a consistent look because of that?

DL: I don’t think so. “9th Circle” was 2006 and we actually shot that, even though it does not look it, on 35mm. The rest of the movie was shot on the 5D and I think a little bit of the 7D, but it was my idea to put the grindhouse effect on “Terrifier”. I have a lot of input on how the movie looks so I don’t just tell the DP to just light it however they want. I think it was pretty easy to stay consistent. I don’t know if that helped us or not. I think people would have preferred if the entire thing looked like the grindhouse look from “Terrifier”.

DC: That look can wear out its welcome though. I’ve seen a lot of attempts at that sort of thing and it was really done well with “Terrifier”. I think that’s one of the reasons it caught on.

DL: Oh, thanks man. That’s definitely my favorite still. I think we did the best job with “Terrifer”. When we make this Art the Clown film, it’s going to be an hour-and-thirty-minute “Terrifier”. That’s what I’m going to try and do.

DC: To go back to “The 9th Circle” for a second, can you talk about some of the additional footage in it so they know there’s more to it now?

DL: Yeah, those two other captive girls when the girl wakes up in the tunnel... I cut that entire thing out because when I was editing it, it felt like it wanted to be a bigger movie but it just wasn’t going anywhere. That’s what I was thinking at the time, so I just cut them out and centered it around that one girl. When we were making All Hallows' Eve, we just needed footage to beef it up. I thought they gave really good performances, those girls, and I was kind of ashamed that I cut it out in the first place. So I was happy to put it back in for them. I was able to track them down so they were really happy to see that they were getting their work out there.

DC: What actually got you into doing effects work in the first place? Was it a film or just doing different gags with your friends?

DL: It was definitely Tom Savini. He was my hero and still one of my biggest. He’s the reason why I’m into special effects and even filmmaking. I grew up watching Scream Greats, did you ever see that?

DC: Of course, yeah, Volume 1.

DL: Exactly. I grew up watching that, I was about twelve years old, I went to one of those horror conventions my mother took me to because [Savini] was gonna be there. So I actually met him and that was just insane, that was so surreal. At that horror convention, someone was selling those real machetes that were dulled down that had the semi-circle cut out that he would always use on Dawn of the Dead. My mother bought me one of those and my first bottle of mint-flavored blood and I think it was a Ben Nye hair and makeup kit. So I took all that stuff home and just started experimenting with latex and making cuts on my friends’ cheeks. I sent them all home to their parents and just watched the parents freak out and that just gave me such a rush to see that it worked. And it just never stopped and we’re still making movies.

All Hallows' Eve is available now on DVD and definitely has our seal of approval.
