Another Look at Some of the Dark Shadows Clan

Finally an image of Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins has surfaced that's a bit more menacing than the last several that we've seen. Given the amount of different impressions every still has given fans, it's going to be really interesting to see how this all pans out on the big screen.

The ensemble cast includes Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Bella Heathcote, Chloe Moretz, Thomas McDonell, and newcomer Gulliver McGrath. Look for it in theatres in glorious 2D on May 11, 2012.

Synopsis
In the year 1752 Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England, to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass, and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet — or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Brouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.

Also residing in the manor are Elizabeth's ne'er-do-well brother, Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter, Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger's precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David's new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.

Check out the latest look at Johnny Depp, Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Helena Bonham Carter courtesy of the latest issue of Vanity Fair (pages 156 and 157) below.

There's no doubt about it that Jessica Lange's award-winning performance in "American Horror Story" was a big reason that viewers kept tuning in. She was just priceless, and it only makes sense she take on a bigger role in Season 2.

In an interview with Ryan Murphy, co-creator of the show, Murphy revealed to EW that in Season 2 Lange will be playing an entirely different character and the series will be revolving around her.

We have designed the second season of 'American Horror Story' completely around her character. Last year Jessica came in with Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott. This will really be the Jessica Lange show so I’m very excited about it. We are designing this amazing new opposite of the Constance character for her. She and I have spoken about different things. She has a lot of ideas and has a lot of input into her character. She told me some things she has always wanted to play as an actress. She’s a great collaborator and a great friend.

Count us in! Look for Season 2 of "American Horror Story" later this year.

Bloodshot to Fire His Way to the Big Screen

Weird things happen to comic book characters when they're adapted for the big screen. Sometimes a studio can nail it (Batman Begins), and sometimes, well, sometimes we get crap like Spawn and even worse Faust. Hopefully the powers-that-be can get Bloodshot right!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bloodshot, the Valiant comic books character who has been described as a modern-day Frankenstein, is making his way to the big screen.

Columbia Pictures is closing a deal to acquire the rights to adapt Bloodshot into a feature film to be produced by Neal H. Moritz through his Original Film banner and Jason Kothari and Dinesh Shamdasani on behalf of Valiant Entertainment, it was announced by Hannah Minghella, Columbia president of production.

Jeff Wadlow (Prey), who is writing the screenplay, actually instigated the project. A fan of the character, Wadlow, repped by WME, wrote a spec script that attracted Moritz's attention.

Bloodshot, who first appeared in Valiant comic books in 1992, has appeared in more than 70 issues. Valiant, founded in 1989, is re-launching the character this year as it returns to publishing in May.

Bloodshot entered the Valiant universe as mob killer Angelo Mortalli, who enters a witness protection program and then becomes part of a secret experiment to create the ultimate killing machine. His memories are erased and he is injected with microscopic computers called nanites. As he tries to rediscover who he was, he battles both the mob and the police.

The Bloodshot character has been a fan favorite for nearly two decades, selling approximately 7 million comic books globally. Because there have been more than 1,500 pages of storylines published, there is a rich legacy to draw from as we develop the screenplay. Neal is one of the best action producers working today, and we know he is the right filmmaker to take on this potential franchise,” Minghella said.

TV spot number three for The Raven has made its way online, and as per usual we've snagged it for ya and have it on display complete with pointy beak and feathers. Well, no, not really, but still!

Look for James McTeigue's The Raven starring John Cusack, Luke Evans and Brendan Gleeson on April 27th, 2012.

The Raven begins with Poe arriving in Baltimore as a serial killer is terrorizing the city, using the writer’s stories as the inspiration for his crimes. Poe is a suspect at first, but he eventually joins forces with a police inspector to solve the crimes and save the woman he loves.

Synopsis
In this gritty thriller, Edgar Allan Poe (John Cusack, Being John Malkovich) joins forces with a young Baltimore detective (Luke Evans, Immortals) to hunt down a mad serial killer who’s using Poe’s own works as the basis in a string of brutal murders. Directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta), the film also stars Alice Eve (Sex and the City 2), Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges) and Oliver Jackson-Cohen (Faster).

When a mother and daughter are found brutally murdered in 19th century Baltimore, Detective Emmett Fields makes a startling discovery: the crime resembles a fictional murder described in gory detail in the local newspaper—part of a collection of stories penned by struggling writer and social pariah Edgar Allan Poe. But even as Poe is questioned by police, another grisly murder occurs, also inspired by a popular Poe story.

Realizing a serial killer is on the loose using Poe’s writings as the backdrop for his bloody rampage, Fields enlists the author’s help in stopping the attacks. But when it appears someone close to Poe may become the murderer’s next victim, the stakes become even higher and the inventor of the detective story calls on his own powers of deduction to try to solve the case before it’s too late.

Chilling Film Darkest Night to Hit Theaters Soon

Darkest Night is currently in post-production and looking to hit theaters in April. The film is a psychological struggle for the characters involved as a family gathering devolves into a nightmare. Check out the newest trailer and some official Darkest Night stills.

You can get all the info you'd like about Darkest Night at the official website. The film has almost all Filipino actors, as well as American DJ Perry. Co-starring in Darkest Night is Anne Gauthier, a newcomer to film, and French Filipina. The film also features Issa Litton, Nic Campos, Jill Palencia, Marife Necesito, Zeny Sevilla, Kevin Vitug and Jonas Gruet. Darkest Night is directed by Noel Tan and written by Russ Williams.

From the Press Release
"Darkest Night is a new type of horror film," DJ Perry said. “I think that's what's causing so much of the anticipation among those horror fans and writers 'in the know.' Western horror films we've grown up with. Asian horror has been at the cutting edge for the last 20 years. In Darkest Night, East meets West to give a whole new perspective on what scares us the most."

Darkest Night unfolds in a “found video and documentary” style. Its story plops American Perry right in the middle of the action to allow Western audiences to experience a “holiday” trip away from home. Eastern audiences will identify with the many vivid Asian characters, as well as the local and family setting. Perry's character in the film, Ken Tyler, is introduced to the traditional-minded family of his Filipino fiancée, Susan Reyes, played by Ms. Gauthier, during a Christmas Day family reunion. What follows is a dark, horrific trip not to be missed, as demonic forces slowly come into play. Darkest Night combines Western demons with Eastern spiritual traditions to come up with an original recipe for suspense and terror.

Anything is scary when you make it monster-sized. But when you take a creature that has the word "monster" in its accepted, everyday name, you're really raising the bar. Gila! is a remake of the '50s film The Giant Gila Monster, and we've got some concept art and promo posters for you to feast your eyes on. Read on!

The conceptual designs of the monster you'll see below were created by Charles Chiodo (of the Chiodo Bros.), co-writer of Killer Klowns From Outer Space and puppet art director on Trey Parker's Team America: World Police. As you can see, the artwork is quite realistic with a creature feature feel to it.

The rumor we've heard is that Gila! is going to open in drive-in theaters across the United States when the official release date (yet to be announced) arrives. The film has wrapped production so Gila! can't be that far off. The word we get from Dread's most ambitious tipster, Avery G, is that director Jim Wynorski has “really outdone himself" with this film. Indie Horror Month: Justin Russell Talks The Sleeper, Eighties Slashers and More

$
0
0

For his second feature up-and-coming writer/director Justin Russell revisits the genre he loves the most, 80's slasher flicks, and since the recent release of The Sleeper on DVD and VHS, we here at Dread Central have fallen head over heels with Russell's work and all its cheesy goodness.

The Sleeper (review here) travels back to the year 1981 and follows the sorority girls of Alpha Gamma Theta, who are hosting a party for new pledges. As the new pledges arrive, so does an uninvited guest, and little do the sisters know that someone is watching their every move from the shadows. As the girls shower, study, eat and bump uglies with their boyfriends, the 'Sleeper' studies them and soon, one by one, finds the girls at their most vulnerable and murders them. Can the 'Sleeper' be stopped before there's no sorority left to pledge?

In honor of Indie Horror Month, we recently caught up with Russell to hear more about the inspiration behind The Sleeper, his experiences working on the flick as well as more on the potential for a sequel to The Sleeper. Read on for our interview with Russell, and look for a special announcement regarding the slasher film coming soon to Dread Central.

Dread Central: I'd love to hear more about what got you into filmmaking and your career before The Sleeper.

Justin Russell: Well, when I was 12, I got a video camera and started making all sorts of movies with my friends. I went to school, and after that I got a job at a production studio where we worked on corporate type stuff. My boss was pretty cool because he'd let me use the studio's equipment so I could make my own projects still. That's how I made Death Stop Holocaust. It's definitely got its own style, and so while I was waiting on getting distribution for that, I knew I needed to get something else going, which ended up being The Sleeper.

DC: Where did the inspiration come from for The Sleeper? It feels like so many movies we grew up watching in the 80's.

Russell: That's definitely the feel I was going for actually! The Sleeper was born from my strong love of the horror genre as well as my lifelong love for American slasher films of the 80's. I grew up going to the video store on the weekends, looking at all the old boxes and artwork. I was too young to rent the movies I saw, but my older brother always collected these films, which gave me access to a few of the classics, and slashers were always my favorite.

I love the feeling and atmosphere that those early slashers had, so I tried to emulate that feeling for 'The Sleeper.' If you listen to my commentary on the DVD, you get an inside look at the films that really inspired me to make 'The Sleeper.' A short list of my favorites and the ones that I really paid attention to in my homage are: Prom Night, Girls Nite Out, Pieces, Slumber Party Massacre, Friday the 13th, My Bloody Valentine and Tenebre.

I knew I wanted to do it on my own so it had to be simple to produce and building it around my own hometown- which had a nice aged feel to it already-so I pretty much went into The Sleeper with the knowledge that this was a project I could definitely make and make it successfully.

Both of my movies are slasher movies, but their tones are completely different. The first is more of this dream state kind of slasher story that's woven into nightmares, so to speak. You definitely always have to think of your budget and write towards that number. We definitely had more of a budget on The Sleeper, but because of the costs associated with making an 80's style movie, the budgets sort of balanced out to be about the same on each project.

DC: Doing a period piece indie horror film is pretty ambitious. Was the cost of doing that a concern at all going into The Sleeper?

Russell: Yeah, that was definitely a huge consideration too - making a movie set in the 1980's - because you had to do a lot of set dressing and wardrobe purchases that you wouldn't necessarily have to make if you stick with modern times. But because I love 80's slashers, I knew I couldn't do a modern movie and that the nostalgia aspect of The Sleeper was going to be a huge part of making the story work, and so I shopped everywhere I could for vintage stuff and then found the rest on eBay. Had we not gotten the art direction right, it could have ruined everything on The Sleeper and it was definitely one of the biggest parts of our budget, but I really lucked out by all the clothes and stuff for not a lot of money. Or at least not as much as you'd think.

DC: You used a lot of different locations, too, in The Sleeper when a lot of indie films generally utilize just a handful because of budget concerns. How on earth did you pull this all off?

Russell: For me, the one thing I think that can sink an independent film is if you don't keep things moving and keep characters moving, too; I can get bored when writing scripts if I haven't kept the characters moving forward for a few pages so while we did have a lot of locations for The Sleeper - more than you probably should have on an indie budget - most of them I already knew when I was writing the story so having to shoot and plan for so many different places wasn't a huge challenge really.

DC: So what would you say was the biggest challenge then making this movie? How did you go into The Sleeper prepared for those challenges?

Russell: The biggest struggle with The Sleeper actually was putting together an entire cast of local talent because that's the way I felt like this needed to be made, with a lot of fresh faces who horror fans didn't recognize, and it was also important to me to get local actors involved and working because I thought that would be great to showcase the acting talent in Ohio.

We shot for 13 days in Springfield, Ohio, and everyone would drive in to set every day from Cleveland and Columbus so right from the start, everyone was in it to make the best possible movie. Everyone pitched in to get The Sleeper made, and having such a quick production time was definitely a challenge but things always went smoothly.

The key to that was preparation- I had everything planned out way before we ever went into production, and that's something that's always been of high importance to me... planning ahead. If you take the time to plan, you can always ensure that you're going to be professional on set, and there was never a time on the set of The Sleeper that wasn't premeditated. So, when you plan, things go really great and that's how people stay enthusiastic on an indie set; that enthusiasm always shows in the final product, too, so I always make sure my cast and crew come first.

DC: Let's talk about the open ending of The Sleeper; any plans on resurrecting the sorority slasher anytime soon?

Russell: The Sleeper needed that open ending; that's how they did it in the 80s after all. See, I always kind of envisioned The Sleeper to be the kind of movie a studio would have 'rushed through' back then as their way to cash in on the slasher craze that happened. I wanted some of the plot holes and editing errors to be in there intentionally because that's how this kind of movie would have been released; a studio wouldn't take the time to fix stuff and they certainly would never paint themselves into a corner on a slasher movie; they always want a sequel.

I don't necessarily want to be a one-trick pony kind of director, even though both of my movies were very different kinds of slasher movies. But my next feature most likely won't be another slasher. That doesn't mean I wouldn't come back eventually to do The Sleeper 2; it's just not what I want to do next as a director.

DC: So then what's up next for you?

Russell: I just have two or three scripts in the works right now, and there's one I'm especially excited about since it would be such a different project for me as a director. But I'm also toying with the idea of a web series anthology that would have a "Tales from the Crypt" and "Masters of Horrors" vibe to it if I decide to do it.

The Human Centipede 3: Final Sequence Grabs its Nuts

Well then. That may very well be our favorite headline of the day. In any event, yes, The Human Centipede Part 3: Final Sequence will soon be slithering our way from director Tom Six, but this time... he's not coming alone!

According to Entertainment Weekly Human Centipede franchise stars Dieter Laser and Laurence R. Harvey will both play lead roles in The Human Centipede Part 3: Final Sequence. The controversial horror series’ writer-director Tom Six has also cast himself in a supporting part for the concluding entry in the Human Centipede trilogy.

This casting, which has been exclusively revealed to EW by producer Ilona Six, will be big news for fans of the Human Centipede movies. German actor Laser chillingly played a crazed surgeon who stitches three people together in the first film while U.K. actor Harvey portrayed an equally deranged parking lot attendant called Martin who goes one better (actually, around eight better) in the second entry, which was initially banned in Britain.

According to Ilona Six, principal photography on Human Centipede 3 will take place this May and June in the Southern states of the U.S. The producer also confirmed that the American finale of the series is set for a 2013 release and will be “100 percent politically incorrect.

We are ... delighted!

No Scream 5 for Kevin Williamson

No Scream 5 for Kevin WilliamsonRemember all the "controversy" surrounding the last film in Wes Craven's much beloved Scream franchise? On-set tensions were highly touted just about everywhere as news of that and anything else you could think of came pouring in. We're sure about 95% of it was bullshit, but that remaining 5%...

Yeah, things definitely got a little ugly with writer Kevin Williamson and the powers-that-be. So much so that to this very day Williamson remains tight-lipped about anything having to do with the entire Scream franchise.

In a recent interview with website Assignment X regarding his mega-popular show for The CW Network "The Vampire Diaries", Williamson confirmed what we all kind of already knew about Scream 5:

"I’m not doing it," Williamson told the site super briefly before moving on. We'd love for him to return, but it's highly unlikely. He will be missed.

Thanks to DC reader RRH for the heads-up!
