Zachary Quinto Scores Lead in American Horror Story Season 2

Zachary Quinto Scores Lead in American Horror Story Season 2More casting news coming in for Season 2 of the hit FX show "American Horror Story". Hot on the heels of the news that the wonderful Jessica Lange would be returning to the series, another cast member has jumped into a new role with her!

According to Deadline Zachary Quinto, who did a scene-stealing four-episode arc on the first season of the Ryan Murphy/Brad Falchuk drama as the Harmon house’s doomed former co-owner Chad Warwick, will be back as a series regular in Season 2, joining Jessica Lange. Like Lange, he will play a brand new character next season, which is set at an East Coast institution. Quinto will play one of two male leads and the nemesis to Lange’s character, which will be at the center of the Season 2 storyline.

While Lange had been expected to return — she confirmed ongoing negotiations at the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards, where she won for her performance on the show — Quinto’s return had been kept under wraps until now. Quinto and Murphy are friends; that’s how Quinto’s original stint on the show came about. After the critical praise Quinto received for his arc, he was open to coming back. “I had an amazing time and I only did four episodes of the season, so it was just a little bit of an appetizer for me; I would love to work more,” he said in an online interview last month. An anthology series like "AHS" is perfectly suited for Quinto, who wants to keep a hand in television but, busy as an actor and producer on the feature side, can’t make the 5- to 6-year commitment required on a regular series.

In addition to Lange and Quinto, three other actors from Season 1 of "AHS" will return next season. Murphy is expected to announce their names at the show’s panel tonight, which will open this year’s PaleyFest.

Emily Rossum to Mingle With Beautiful CreaturesThere's been quite a bit of casting news swirling around the Warner Bros. adaptation of Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl's Beautiful Creatures series. Today we have word that the lovely and talented Emmy Rossum (Shameless) is the latest addition to the cast.

Rossum joins Jack O'Connell (Eden Lake), Alice Englert (In Fear), Viola Davis (The Help) and Emma Thompson (In the Name of the Father) in the supernatural thriller based on the young adult novels. She'll star opposite Englert as rival witches and former friends who discover all sorts of dark and secret histories about the small Southern town they're from.

Richard LaGravenese (P.S. I Love You) will direct and adapt the story, which is set to go before cameras next month in New Orleans. Distributor Alcon has already established what appears to be an appropriate release date for the horror lite production - expect it to hit theaters on February 1st, 2013. If this is anything like The Hunger Games expect a lot more updates on this sucker between now and then.

Do we have any regular readers who've actually read this series? If so, sound off below!

Julia Stiles to Walk in the Midnight Sun for NBC

$

Julia Stiles Stalking DexterI've never been able to grasp why people seem to like Julia Stiles. To me, she's one of those actors who is adequate in her roles, but never manages to be anything other than a person reciting their lines. But in a world where Channing Tatum is a movie star, it seems appropriate that Stiles keep getting work too.

Deadline is reporting that Stiles joins the cast of "Midnight Sun". The thriller, based on an Israeli format, follows the mysterious disappearance of the Midnight Sun, a group living on a cult-like commune in Alaska, and a female FBI cult specialist leading the investigation that uncovers a larger conspiracy. Stiles will play FBI agent Leah Kafka, while Connor O’Farrell ("The Pacific") will play the town police chief and Emma Bell ("The Walking Dead"), his daughter Rory.

If nothing else, it sounds like an interesting concept for a series. Makes me wish it was anyone other than Stiles, but maybe she'll wind up surprising me one of these days.

Troll Hunter Director to Chronicle The Adventures of a Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom

Carpe DemonNow here's a gig that makes a lot of sense. Troll Hunter director, André Øvredal, has signed on to direct an adaptation of Carpe Demon: The Adventures of a Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom for 1492 Pictures.

Based on Julie Kenner's best-selling novel of the same title, it's fairly self-explanatory. A soccer mom by day hunts demons at night. Or something. Considering the odd concept, it sounds like Øvredal will be right at home with the material. He certainly knows how to balance the fun and the scares.

Unfortunately, we don't have any casting as of yet, but it should be fun to see who winds up taking the starring role in this one. Watch this spot for the very latest and greatest. This one has the potential to be something special, and that's why we'll be keeping close watch of it.

Piranha 3DD to Hit Theater Screens and VOD on Same Day

Hot off the heels of that trailer last week, I can't say this news surprises me. Fans have been wondering WHEN they'll have the opportunity to see Piranha 3DD since it was pulled from its original release schedule last November. We don't have a date for you, but it looks like you won't have to go very far.

The LA Times is reporting that the Weinstein Co. will release Piranha 3DD simultaneously in theaters and via video-on-demand at a to-be-determined date. It's no secret that The Weinstein Company has been plagued by financial woes for the past few years, so this doesn't come as a real shock - especially in the wake of what I perceived to be an incredibly weak and forced trailer.

Does this move suggest the studio has no faith in the film? How big of a theatrical release will this receive? We'll keep you posted but I wouldn't get your hopes up of seeing this in full-on 3DD unless you're living in a major city. Then again, I never thought this sequel would be made at all, so what do I know?

Synopsis
Having awoken from their spring break extravaganza at Lake Victoria, the swarm heads upstream where they look to make a meal out of Big Wet, a local water park where when it comes to fun, nobody does it wetter! Thought they came to get wet, get loaded and get some, the staff and patrons get more than they bargained for when they must face the fiercest, most bloodthirsty piranhas yet. Lead by the strong-willed, studious Maddy and her friends, Barry and Kyle, the trio must dive in and take on these man-eating creatures using every ounce of their being ... but can they be stopped?

B-Sides: Baby Lied about the Neon Maniacs

$

0

If you remember the movie Neon Maniacs, congratulations, you actually remember the movie Neon Maniacs. I’m getting obscure with this week’s B-Sides, so obscure even finding a copy of this tune anywhere is nearly impossible.

Horror, strangeness, and Eighties tackiness collided head-on in the low-budget 1986 creature feature Neon Maniacs. A gaggle of zombie mutants each garishly gimmicky enough to have been released as Masters of the Universe action figures lurk beneath the Golden Gate Bridge. The only thing that can kill these foul creatures is good ol’ H20. Yep, a little water or a little rain makes these monsters go the way of the Wicked Witch.

You don’t suppose M. Night watched this flick before making Signs?

Neon Maniacs is mostly forgotten today. Fitting, given how forgettable the movie is, aside from the campy designs of its murderous mutants. The song “Baby Lied” isn’t terribly memorable either unless you’re really into AOR music.

No Neon Maniacs soundtrack was ever released. A very rare self-released album by singer Rick Bowles and this scene from the movie in which the song is performed before a soon-to-be-dead audience are the only places you can hear the very 80’s tune “Baby Lied”.

Boston Residents Have a Chance to See Holliston Early

$

We're all excited for Adam Green and Joe Lynch's upcoming sitcom "Holliston", and as an East Coaster, I'm doubly excited to see a little favoritism when it comes to having the opportunity to check out the first two episodes early.

That's right, Boston folk, head on over to Emerson College on Tuesday night, March 13th at 7:00 PM for an opportunity to see "Holliston" before it airs. Best of all? Series creator and star Adam Green will be joined by co-stars Joe Lynch, Corri English, and Laura Ortiz as they present not just one, but two episodes of the upcoming sitcom. This event is open to the public, and seating is first-come/first-served. Doors open at 6:30 pm in the Bright Family Screening Room at the Paramount Center on the Emerson College campus.

“Holliston,” FEARnet’s first original scripted television show, is a riotous and offbeat multi-camera, buddy comedy set in the town of Holliston (near Boston). Described by its creators as "The Big Bang Theory" meets Evil Dead II,” the series shines a light on the post-college life where everything is a struggle, and nothing works out like it’s supposed to, with terrifyingly funny results as Adam and Joe struggle to become big-time horror filmmakers and make ends meet.

“Holliston” stars Green and Lynch along with Corri English (Unrest, The Bedford Diaries, lead singer of Brokedown Cadillac), Laura Ortiz (The Hills Have Eyes, Horton Hears A Who), Dee Snider ("Celebrity Apprentice", Twisted Sister, Strangeland, radio/television personality), and Oderus Urungus (Alien lead singer from legendary heavy metal band GWAR). The regular cast will welcome a bevy of guest stars and celebrity cameos during its first season.

Follow FEARnet on Twitter and "like" FEARnet on Facebook for all the latest news and updates on horror, thriller, and suspense entertainment.

Synopsis
Adam and Joe are two down on their luck guys living in the small New England town of Holliston, Massachusetts and struggling to chase their dream of becoming horror movie filmmakers... all while dealing with life, their day jobs, and the opposite sex. With a cast that includes a cross dressing sexually inappropriate boss, a mentally handicapped cat, and an imaginary friend/alien who lives in the closet... Holliston re-invents the traditional sit-com as we know it and breaks new (and sometimes bloody) ground.

But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass, and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet — or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Brouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.

Also residing in the manor are Elizabeth's ne'er-do-well brother, Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter, Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger's precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David's new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.

Directors Joshua Zeman and Barbara Brancaccio to Host Cropsey Screening on Constellation.tvNothing is scarier than stuff that really happened, and in their creepy documentary Cropsey, Joshua Zeman and Barbara Brancaccio investigate this Long Island legend used to scare the bejesus out of children in hopes of making them listen to their parents. Now they have more to share.

The directorial duo will be hosting a screening of Cropsey on Constellation.tv next Sunday night, March 11, at 8pm EST. Zeman and Brancaccio will be giving an introduction to the film via webcam and will be available to chat during the film before giving a post-screening Q&A. For more on the award-winning 2009 film, check out the Cropsey website , follow Cropsey on Twitter (@cropseylegend) and check out the Cropsey Facebook page.

Synopsis
Growing up on Staten Island, filmmakers Joshua Zeman and Barbara Brancaccio had often heard the legend of Cropsey. For the kids in their neighborhood, Cropsey was the escaped mental patient who lived in the old abandoned Willowbrook Mental Institution, who would come out late at night and snatch children off the streets. Sometimes Cropsey had a hook for a hand, other times he wielded a bloody axe, but it didn’t matter, Cropsey was always out there, lurking in the shadows, waiting to get them.

Later as teenagers, the filmmakers assumed Cropsey was just an urban legend: a cautionary tale used to keep them out of those abandoned buildings and stop them from doing all those things that teenagers like to do. That all changed in the summer of 1987 when a 12-year-old girl with Down syndrome, named Jennifer Schweiger, disappeared from their community. That was the summer all the kids from Staten Island discovered that their urban legend was real.

Now as adults Joshua and Barbara have returned to Staten Island to create Cropsey, a feature documentary that delves into the mystery behind Jennifer and four additional missing children. The film also investigates Andre Rand, the real-life boogeyman linked to their disappearances. Embarking on a mysterious journey into the underbelly of their forgotten borough, these filmmakers uncover a reality that is more terrifying than any urban legend.

Exclusive Interview: Amy Smart Talks Columbus Circle, Takashi Shimizu's 7500 and More

Exclusive Interview: Amy Smart Talks Columbus Circle, Takashi Shimizu's 7500 and MoreOver the last 15 years the versatile Amy Smart has tackled a multitude of genres on both the big screen and TV including comedy, action, sci-fi, teen stories, and horror films like Strangeland, Mirrors and Takashi Shimizu's upcoming supernatural spookfest set on a plane - 7500.

Smart is currently celebrating the March 6th release of another recent horror project- the dramatic thriller Columbus Circle- in which she plays Lillian Hart, a privileged but battered wife who reaches out to socialite recluse Elizabeth Clayton (Selma Blair) for help when her husband's (Jason Lee) abuse goes too far.

Giovanni Ribisi, Kevin Pollak, Beau Bridges and Jason Antoon round out the Columbus Circle ensemble.

Dread Central recently had the opportunity to chat briefly with Smart about what excited her about coming on board Columbus Circle, why she likes keeping her resume so diverse and just how scary she thinks 7500 will be for audiences when the flick arrives in theaters this August.

Dread Central: Can you talk about how you got involved with Columbus Circle? It had to be a great experience working with the great cast that you had on this.

Amy Smart: Columbus Circle was such a fun movie to work on because the material was so great; the story has so many different twists and turns and I thought it was a lot different than a lot of other thrillers right now because you just never know where the story will end up going. That's the kind of movie I like to watch so I knew it was going to be a great experience.

When I got offered the role and realized who I'd be making this movie with, that got me really excited to be a part of it. Jason is such a nice guy in real life but a lot of our scenes were really intense and emotionally charged so that was kind of strange because he's not that guy in the movie at all. I've actually known Selma for years, but this was the first time we've actually been able to work together so that was pretty great. I think the fact that we are so comfortable with each other and have that familiarity really translates in our scenes together- and really, everyone was great to work with. There was a lot of talent involved with this movie and it shows in the final product.

DC: What I thought was very interesting about your character, Lillian, is that you spend about half of the movie thinking one thing about her and then out of nowhere, secrets are revealed and there's an entirely new character that we're following. Was it fun to play a complicated character like you did here?

Amy Smart: Lillian was a really interesting character to get to know and breathe life into because she has that duality- she is deceiving and conniving but she also plays off everything very innocently, like she blames everyone but herself when things start to go wrong. Lillian certainly was a deceitful character but I also think there is a small part of her that genuinely wants to connect with others- she lives a lonely life on the run and I think deep down, Lillian just wants to settle down into a normal life and leave all the deceit behind her. Unfortunately, she never gets that chance because of how everything works out in the story and even though Lillian is a villain, she's kind of a victim too.

DC: Your resume is incredibly varied after working so steadily in the industry for 15 years now- what is it that you look for now when new considering projects to keep things fresh?

Amy Smart: You know, I always like to keep my work varied so I don't get pigeonholed into one category of movies or really- just end up bored professionally. I like trying new things and challenging myself as an actress so while I've done a lot of drama, I've also done a few comedies, some romantic comedies and some horror- I think the only way you can continue to improve as a performer is to keep pushing yourself.

DC: I know you recently just worked on 7500, which is a supernatural horror flick set inside a plane- so how much is this movie going to mess with people who already hate flying?

Amy Smart: Oh wow, let me just tell you something - that movie is going to be scary! (laughs) But yeah, I knew the scares were going to be there from reading the script, but to actually see the atmosphere while shooting on set was something else entirely. It was just creepy stuff and the fact that it's set on a plane is just so unnerving because we all hate to fly; any time you feel turbulence, you can't help but start to panic and the 'turbulence' they had on set was just insane. Even though our director Takashi (Shimizu) doesn't speak English, his kind of horror was able to translate, and I really think fans are going to be terrified by this movie.

George Gallo's thriller Columbus Circle stars Selma Blair, Amy Smart, Jason Lee, Giovanni Ribisi, Kevin Pollak, and Beau Bridges. Look for it on DVD and Blu-ray on March 6th, 2012.

From the Press Release
Actor Jason Vail stars in The Asylum's next big feature "Abraham Lincoln Vs Zombies" opposite Bill Oberst, Jr., as Honest Abe, which has just wrapped shooting in beautiful historic Savannah, GA. His first appearance in an Asylum film, Vail was thrilled with the opportunity to play one of history's most notorious bad boys, John Wilkes Booth, a role that he played two years ago in Seth Grahame-Smith's Moby nominated ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER book trailer by Hachette BookGroup. The book trailer, which appeared on the web back in February of 2010, now has nearly a million and a half hits on Youtube and counting. The book trailer was reported to have inspired Tim Burton to produce the feature film version which also comes out later this year.

You can watch Jason Vail perform opposite BIll Oberst, Jr., in Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies on May 22, 2012; worldwide release through Netflix, Blockbuster, Red Box, Amazon and other video providers.
