Horror Icons Attending this Weekend's Screenings of Star-Studded Flick The Butterfly RoomIt's been awhile since we've had anything to report about Jonathan Zarantonello's The Butterfly Room, which is loaded with familiar faces from horror movies past. Today we're happy to report that the film is screening in California this weekend, and we've got all the details for ya. Read on!

Two separate screenings will take place at North Hollywood's Laemmle Noho 7 theater, on both Friday and Saturday night. Star Heather Langenkamp will be on hand for the Friday night showing while fellow horror icons/stars Barbara Steele and James Karen (Return of the Living Dead) will be hosting Q&A sessions on Saturday night.

You'll find full screening information over on The Butterfly Room's official website!

Also starring are P.J. Soles, Adrienne King, Erica Leerhsen, and Camille Keaton.

Synopsis
Ann, a reclusive, elegant lady with an obsession for butterflies, is surprisingly befriended by the eerily beautiful young Alice. Using her seductive innocence, Alice establishes a disturbing mother-daughter relationship with Ann. Lured into her twisted world, Ann soon discovers that she is not the only recipient of the girl's affections.

Confronted by Alice's other lady friends, Ann's shock awakens a dark, hidden past, unchaining a spiral of madness: a series of brutal and bizarre crimes that Ann will have to commit to preserve her harmless and deceptive appearances. The only one who recognizes there's something unsettling about Ann is nine-year-old Julie, her next-door neighbor's daughter.

With the inevitable curiosity of a child, Julie begins to explore the corners of Ann's apartment, discovering a dark secret hidden in the walls of the forbidden butterfly room. No one believes what she's seen except for Ann's estranged daughter, Dorothy. Horrified, she realizes that the fate of the young girl lies in her hands. To save both Julie and herself, she must summon up the courage to confront an evil that has haunted her for years.

With special effects created by Academy Award winning AFX Studio and elegant and refined visuals, in contrast with the sickness of the story, The Butterfly Room is an all-female story, an American thriller with a European soul.

Get Ready to Check Out Some Local Hauntings

Get Ready to Check Out Some Local HauntingsAround these parts we're absolute suckers for paranormal TV programming. Sure, 99.9% of it ends up with us watching people walking around in the dark and finding absolutely nothing, but still, there's a charm to them. The next one coming is titled simply "Local Hauntings." Take a look!

"'Local Hauntings' is the next era of paranormal ghost shows," says Anthony Daniel of Dream Comet Studios. "This show is built by the fans for the fans. The concept of making the audience feel like they are with us on the investigation is our mindset."

"'Local Hauntings' will have two states each season kind of battle one another for a grade... the audience/fans [will] get to vote on what state we visit and be able to grade each episode."

Daniel continues, "Our goal is to do the whole USA, which means that this show will be around for 25 seasons. Also, the audience will have a chance to vote on their top 10 favorite locations within a state if the state gets voted in, which is pretty cool. We will have a live talk show after the episode like 'The Talking Dead' to go over more findings and to give a few details about next's week episode, along we have a few special guests so far aboard for this project, which I'm not able to state yet, but they are big names in the paranormal field."

"In each state we will cast local ghost hunters because who better knows the local hauntings of a state than the people that live there? Each episode will get graded/scored on 3 subjects, which are the HISTORY of the location, ACTIVITY of the site during the investigation, and what the PEOPLE think of the location. Each episode will be out of 10 points, with 10 the highest a location can score. Our team will first score it; then we will have the audience vote in and see what they think to find out the official grade. Once a state is done, it will get a grade/score out of 100, so it will get a letter grade like school - A is 100-90 and so on. At the moment, we have a few major networks that are interested in seeing the pilot, which starts filming this month (April)."

Which state will hold the scariest haunted places in America? I guess we'll be finding out soon enough!

Set Visit Coverage: Tom Woodruff, Jr. Talks Fire City: The Interpreter of Signs

$

Set Visit Coverage: Tom Woodruff Jr. Talks Fire City: The Interpreter of SignsTom Woodruff, Jr., is a celebrated and award-winning special effects makeup artist, and now he’s stepping into the directorial arena with Fire City: Interpreter of Souls. Dread Central was lucky enough to get an exclusive look-see on a special day. (There were demon fights!)

At the lovely location (an art deco building and mini-campus) in Los Angeles, we not only got a chance to interview everyone and watch filming – we even got a bunch of cool photos you won’t see anywhere else!

Dread Central: You have been with this project for a while, right?

Tom Woodruff Jr.: Through a couple different iterations. The first time I was ever made aware of it was when (the writer-producers) Brian and Michael came to me a couple of years ago with a script, I believe it was Fire City: Demon in the Darkness. And the script was honestly hard to get through because I am going through it in terms of what would the creature effects cost. I went in knowing that it was unbelievably packed with not just makeup but winged demons and creatures. It was just so huge that it read without a doubt like a studio film... a big CG movie. Like a Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings thing, which was all going to be digital. I feel like I have seen this movie so many times, and they are never interesting to me anymore. The visuals are all so much the same. To me they become almost interchangeable. So I read the script, saying this is what it’s going to be, but they said no, we want to do all practical creatures. Which to me made it such a huge challenge! To think that anyone had the interest to do it in a practical way! That they would want to mount this kind of a project. So that was a huge starting point.

The first thing we decided to do was to create a trailer to try and get interest in the project. We decided to do this one character, which is the gigantic horn demon. So we did that and got the trailer made. Based on that trailer alone they started getting offers from studios and producers who wanted to make the movie.

DC: So how did you actually decide you were going to direct this particular one?

TWJ: At that point I was like, 'Look, I really want to direct this,' but they were a bit reluctant. So, to see what I would do with the material, we decided to do this ten-minute short called the Interpreter of Signs. It was a three-person job and we shot it out in two days. It got some really good reaction, and I loved working with Brian and Michael as producers and they liked working with me as a director so we just decided to go into this thing with our heads down and just make it work.

Kickstarter made this movie possible. I already had enough of a presence on Kickstarter because of studioADI, which is owned and operated by Alec Gillis and I. Alec had raised a lot of money to do a film called Harbinger Down, which Dread Central has been good about plugging and making people aware of. So, in the end, that and Fire City got funded and we both got this opportunity that we had both been wanting for years and years. Even when we were doing creature stuff, part of us always wanted to be able to be filmmakers. So finally thirty years later it was happening.

DC: As the director, what are you hoping the audience will take away from this film?

TWJ: I want the audience to see this as a great story first off. The audience has to experience some kind of an emotional content. Then through the makeups and the characters I try and create that. I just want people to accept my creations from the beginning as characters, not as creatures. So to me the biggest hurdle will not be making this movie in 18 days, but having the audience get on board right upfront by seeing these creations are more than just 'cool monster makeups.'

DC: I know there is a lot of action, there are demon fights and there are monsters and makeup, but can you talk a little bit about the dramatic aspect of it in the storyline?

TWJ: Like all good stories about monsters, it’s about the characters. It’s about the predicament they find themselves in. In the film we have a human girl who this demonic character is forced to save in an effort to salvage his ongoing demon world himself. So it’s this great pairing of this totally innocent human and this sort of jaded creature. It’s very much like Humphrey Bogart or Fred MacMurray film noir characters from the Forties. The truth is, as much as I love monsters, I also love movies from the Forties like Double Indemnity, Sunset Boulevard, etc. I love the term 'hard-boiled characters,' and that is what the Fire City characters are in my film. I really want Fire City to be evocative of a style of filmmaking that we haven’t seen for a while... if nothing else just to shake things up.

DC: I know you are kind of editing while you’re shooting, so how much can you be involved in the editing process?

TWJ: I have to be involved. Right now while we are shooting, the editors are doing an assembly, which is basically cutting what my preferred takes are just in the right order and not doing any real shaving. Once we are done shooting, then he will finish putting it all together. I will go back into it with him and with Brian and Michael and we will look at it and it will become something new. Scenes evolve. They're made once when they are written, made a second time when they are shot, and made a third time in the editing room. Each time they change somewhat.

DC: What was your favorite part of making the film?

TWJ: My favorite part has been the actual production because we had very little pre-production cause we had very little money. We didn’t have the money to pre-produce anything. Brian and Michael were good enough to get me like three days of rehearsals with actors, which is really hard to do on a movie of this level, but it made a difference. We worked out some of the scenes with most of the cast and we created a kind of spine to work with, but now we are in the real environment with the real set pieces and so things evolve and they get better because the actors bring something to it. So to me it’s just been a blast to see things evolve. There has never been a single boring moment on this set, as opposed to bigger movies I have done.

The film centers around a fragile balance that exists between humankind and the demons who secretly live among them and the crisis for all when this balance is broken.

Harry Shum plays an abusive alcoholic boyfriend who suddenly transforms into a caring and loving person, along with the rest of the humans in his seedy tenement building. Dependent on human misery for survival, the demons in the building begin to starve.

Writer-producers Brian Lubocki and Michael Hayes successfully funded a Kickstarter campaign for the film in August 2013. For more info visit the official Fire City website, "like"Fire City on Facebook, and follow Fire City on Twitter (@interpreterfilm).

He thought it was over. After fighting his way out of a building filled with gangsters and madmen – a fight that left the bodies of police and gangsters alike piled in the halls – rookie Jakarta cop Rama thought it was done and he could resume a normal life. He couldn’t have been more wrong.

Formidable though they may have been, Rama’s opponents in that fateful building were nothing more than small fish swimming in a pond much larger than he ever dreamed possible. And his triumph over the small fry has attracted the attention of the predators farther up the food chain. His family at risk, Rama has only one choice to protect his infant son and wife: He must go undercover to enter the criminal underworld himself and climb through the hierarchy of competing forces until it leads him to the corrupt politicians and police pulling the strings at the top of the heap.

And so Rama begins a new odyssey of violence, a journey that will force him to set aside his own life and history and take on a new identity as the violent offender “Yuda.” In prison he must gain the confidence of Uco – the son of a prominent gang kingpin – to join the gang himself, laying his own life on the line in a desperate all-or-nothing gambit to bring the whole rotten enterprise to an end.

Brutal Opening Scene of Proxy is Guaranteed to Shock You; Watch It NowHorror movies aren't exactly supposed to make you feel good. They're supposed to shock you. They're supposed to terrify you. And they're supposed to show you just how evil and horrifying the world can be.

If this clip from Zack Parker's Proxy (review) is any indication, it's one horror film that truly earns its place within the genre.

We must warn you that the clip you're about to see is incredibly disturbing, and it depicts a pregnant woman being savagely assaulted. Art is not safe, and this shocking opening sequence is proof of that fact. You have been warned.

Proxy will hit VOD outlets on April 18th, with a release at NYC's IFC Center on the same date. A wider theatrical rollout is expected to follow.

Alexia Rasmussen, Alexa Havins, Kristina Klebe, and Joe Swanberg all star.

Synopsis:
A very pregnant Esther Woodhouse (Rasmussen) is walking home after her latest OB appointment when she is brutally attacked and disfigured by a hooded assailant. When Esther seeks consolation in a support group, she finds friendship and empathy in Melanie (Havins), another mother scarred with tragedy. Esther soon begins to believe that the horrific event might be a bittersweet act of fate. However, friendship and empathy can be very dangerous things when accepted by the wrong people.

Proxy is a European-style suspense-thriller that promises to challenge the traditional cinematic form. Parker has reunited with The Newton Brothers to compose the score as well as Jim Timperman as Director of Photography to lens the film. A notable addition to Parker’s crew is seasoned Special F/X Make-Up Artist James Ojala. Proxy was shot on location in Eastern Indiana.

We're pretty sure he's gonna say yes...
