NECA Brings 30th Anniversary Ultimate Freddy Krueger Figure Up from the Boiler RoomToy company NECA has been doing one hell of a job in recent years when it comes to pleasing Freddy Krueger fans, and last year saw the release of a retro-style action figure as well as one inspired by the infamous Nightmare on Elm Street video game.

Now, in celebration of Fred's 30th birthday, they've got an ULTIMATE treat in store for us. Read on!

The Alamo Drafthouse's New York City location held a special 30th anniversary screening of A Nightmare on Elm Street last night, and the good folks from NECA stopped by to unveil what they're calling the "Ultimate Freddy Krueger" action figure, which is loaded with accessories and articulation.

Unlike most Freddy toys NECA has put out, this 30th anniversary special will feature fully articulated legs, and it even sports a brand spankin' new head sculpt. Accessories include two alternate heads, Tina's skinned face, and the infamous "tongue phone," which gave Nancy a big ole lick in the original film.

Measuring 7" tall, the Ultimate Freddy figure is set for release this coming September and is most definitely a must-own for all Fred-Heads.

Typhoon Films to Release Controversial The Killing Games on VOD on April 22ndIt's been several months since last we heard anything about Barry J. Gillis' disturbing feature film The Killing Games, but now word has arrived that Typhoon Films is releasing it worldwide on VOD in just a few days.

From the Press Release:
Typhoon Films has announced that The Killing Games will be released worldwide on Apple iTunes, Google Play, and other outlets on April 22, 2014.

The controversial film had its World Premiere at the Calgary International Film Festival and its US Premiere in San Francisco at Another Hole in the Head Film Festival. Its last stop on the circuit was at Shock Stock Horror Convention in London, Ontario, last weekend.

The Killing Games ran into its first hurdle when the Edmonton International Film Festival Chairman told director Barry J. Gillis that the movie was too violent for their festival. Gillis battled with the fest to screen the movie but to no avail. It was a bitter pill to swallow, and Gillis went public with his displeasure, which in turn led one of the festival organizers to tip off other festivals in a private film festival Facebook group to blacklist Gillis and his movie.

Despite the backlash from various festival organizers, Bruce Fletcher, programmer with the Calgary International Film Festival, requested a screener and loved the movie so much that it had a very successful debut in Calgary in front of a wild group of genre fans who thoroughly enjoyed the movie. The Killing Games has since put crowds into a frenzy wherever it has screened.

The Killing Games opens with a scene where a teenage girl Elysia (Yunona Anders) accidentally witnesses a sadistic killing by sociopathic serial killers Son of Satan (Edwin Autridge) and Dirty Jesus (John Scott), who, once they finish their work, spot the girl and give chase. Meanwhile, Elysia's dad, the world-weary Birdman (Kelly A.H. Bird) is at home caring for his invalid wife. When Elysia doesn't come home at the usual time, Birdman begins to worry about the whereabouts of his daughter.

Not far away is a roving gang of criminals headed by Alex (Alex Sharpe) with their fingers in all sorts of vague illegal pies, including drug dealing and armed robbery. But after a growly-voiced henchman (Toby S. Krekoski) botches a stick-up job that results in multiple murders, Alex suggests they head off to see an old friend he hasn't seen in years to lay low for a while. Soon an ill-fated confrontation leads to a bloody and most unforgettable climax.

The Killing Games also features Kim Sønderholm, who stars as the "Big Boss" in the movie.

The Killing Games can be pre-ordered on iTunes by clicking here.

Avatar Star Stephen Lang Heads from Pandora to SalemThis Sunday night marks the season premiere of WGN America's "Salem," which kicks off at 10/9c. As we anxiously await the start of the televised witch hunt, a familiar face has just come on board the series, and we've got all the character details for ya today!

Per Deadline, Avatar's Stephen Lang has been tapped for a recurring role in the drama, playing Increase Mather, an old-line, hard-core Puritan who led the way across the ocean to the Promised Land in the late 1600s. Intellectually, spiritually, and politically, he’s the most influential man in the country — and the most feared.

"Stephen Lang is a tremendous actor armed with an almost frightening knowledge of history and psychology — perfect for our twisted Salem, where Increase Mather is a man driven to monstrous deeds by the intensity of his convictions and a loving father who torments his son precisely out of love," said co-creators, executive producers, and writers Brannon Braga and Adam Simon.

Created, executive produced, and written by award-winning writer/producer Brannon Braga and Adam Simon, “Salem” stars Janet Montgomery as the ruthless but vulnerable Mary Sibley, Salem’s most powerful enchantress; Shane West as handsome, hardened war veteran John Alden – and Mary’s onetime love interest; Seth Gabel as local aristocrat Cotton Mather, who fans the flames of Salem’s witch hunt; Ashley Madekwe as Mary’s mysterious, carnal accomplice, Tituba; Xander Berkeley as chief politician Magistrate Hale; Tamzin Merchant as the forthright Anne Hale, an artist with a perilous attraction to Alden; Elise Eberle as the mysteriously afflicted Mercy Lewis; and Iddo Goldberg as outcast Isaac Walton.

"Salem" Episode 1.01 - "The Vow"(airs 4/20/14)
John Alden (West) returns from war to discover that the woman he left behind is now married to another man and that his hometown of Salem, Mass., is in the midst of a witch panic in the premiere of this supernatural drama.

Exclusive: Watch the Opening of Easter Sunday!

Exclusive: Watch the Opening of Easter Sunday! As a special Easter treat we're happy to present to you, our fellow loonies, the opening six minutes of the new slasher flick Easter Sunday! So get ready to color your eggs blood red (which incidentally is the title of our favorite rejected Herschell Gordon Lewis script).

A gory love letter to the golden era of slasher movies, the indie film Easter Sunday is written and directed by Jeremy Todd Morehead and stars horror legends Robert Z’Dar and Ari Lehman.

Easter Sunday's dynamic cast boasts Robert Z’Dar, the iconic actor best known as Maniac Cop; Ari Lehman; the first actor to portray Jason Voorhees in the original Friday the 13th; and indie veterans Edward X. Young (Mr. Hush) and Shawn C. Phillips (Ghost Shark). They join a number of promising up-and-comers including Paige Taylor, Christine Galbraith, William Bozarth, Jon McKoy, and Travis Marion.

Northgate Pictures has released N4red The Boogeyman's music video for Easter Sunday's theme song, "Eggsecuted." Done in the spirit of such classic film theme songs as "Are You Ready for Freddy?,""Maniac Cop Rap," and "The Monster Squad," N4red's hip-hop track captures the film's tongue-in-cheek tone. The "Eggsecuted" video also features exclusive footage from the movie.

Synopsis:
Easter Sunday follows a group of teens who accidentally conjure the spirit of Douglas Fisher, a deranged, bunny mask-clad serial killer. Fisher is portrayed by Jason Delgado, who also serves as the film's producer.

Delgado explains the film as follow: "We are trying to bring forth a vision of '80s gore and real brutality on our limited budget. We want to bring people a film that will be fun, fast-paced, and filled with edge-of-your-seat tension. I'm humbled to be working with so many talented individuals."

Instead of a Sequel to Cabin Fever: Patient Zero a Cabin Fever Remake Is on its WayWe don't quite know what to think about this news. Back in May of last year, word was that Cabin Fever: Patient Zero would be rebooting the franchise and kicking off a new trilogy. Now things seem to have changed...

Bloody Disgusting is reporting that sources at Cannes have told them that Indomina will instead put a remake of Eli Roth’s 2002 love-it-or-hate-it original Cabin Fever into production now that Patient Zero is arriving on VOD June 26th and in theatres on August 1st via RLJ/Image Entertainment.

Evolution Entertainment, which produced the first three Saw films as well as Dead Silence and Death Sentence, will be producing the remake with Cassian Elwes and Evan Astrowsky. It's doubtful Roth will lend much more than his name to this one.

The original, Roth's directorial debut, is an offbeat horror tale about a group of five college friends on vacation at a remote mountain cabin. After one of the friends contracts a flesh-eating virus, it quickly spreads among them, and their true feelings and personalities emerge as they struggle to survive the virus... and each other.

We'll have more as it comes.

Learn Some Secrets of Salem and Our Reasons Why You Should (or Shouldn't) Watch the Premiere

    $

    0

Learn Some Secrets of Salem and Our Reasons Why You Should (or Shouldn't) Watch the PremiereWe got a look at the premiere of WGN America's "Salem" a little early and are here to give you an idea of the seductive sorcery the series is offering plus provide a peek behind the scenes at the "Secrets of Salem."

Witches are hot properties on TV right now, and yes, they are the focus of the show with the horrific Salem, Massachusetts, witch trials ramping up and full-blown mass hysteria just around the corner. But these aren't your garden variety witches, and the storyline encompasses a much darker world than we're used to seeing on network TV.

In "Salem" there are also demons and wheeling & dealing with the devil, some very strange goings-on with a toad, a seemingly possessed woman being led around town like a rabid dog on a leash - and that's just in the first episode!

Plus there's nudity and blatant sexuality veering very close to HBO and Showtime standards. Actually, it's classic "almost" nudity, and if you thought Alexandra Daddario's shirt was tenacious in Texas Chainsaw 3D covering up her private parts, wait until you see the tricks they pull in "Salem"!

It's not just the women who are showing their skin either. The men are just as carnal and apt to be a witch. And corruption runs deep. Fortunately, "Salem" isn't pulling any punches when it comes to portraying the hypocrisy of the church and the townsfolk who were accusing others of witchcraft.

    Related Story:Visit our "Salem" Archive

    WGN America's Salem

It may not be completely historically accurate, but just about everyone is a real historical figure like John Alden (Shane West) and Cotton Mather (Seth Gabel), with the recently announced Increase Mather (Stephen Lang) soon joining the fray, and so far it doesn't feel too contemporized. Obvious parallels are made to today's issues, but it doesn't beat you over the head with them. Nor does it take itself too seriously. (But again… that's only "so far" after watching just the pilot so don't blame us if it takes a downward turn like so many promising shows sadly do.)

The acting is decent overall. He may be a little vanilla, but I've been a fan of West since "Once and Again," and the standout newcomer for me is Ashley Madekwe as Tituba. Plus, it's always great to see Xander Berkeley, who looks fabulous with period-appropriate long hair, by the way (as does West). The costumes, sets, and atmosphere are all quite impressive - and oppressive, just like those Puritanical times.

So our verdict is yes, you should tune in for the premiere of "Salem"... unless you're only looking for something geared toward the younger crowd. In that case, you probably shouldn't as there isn't a single emo teen or high school dance in sight!

“Salem,” premiering on Sunday, April 20th, enters the world of the most notorious witch trials in history, a period steeped in fear, suspicion, and hysteria. “Salem” explores what really fueled the town's infamous witch trials and dares to uncover the dark, supernatural truth behind them.

Note that the pilot episode runs a bit over an hour so if you're DVRing it, be sure to add on an extra 10-15 minutes so you don't miss the ending.

"Salem" Episode 1.01 - "The Vow" (airs 4/20/14)
John Alden returns from war to discover that the woman he left behind is now married to another man and that his hometown of Salem, Mass., is in the midst of a witch panic in the premiere of this supernatural drama.

ABC Family Gives a Pilot Order to Paranormal Procedural StitchersABC Family isn't a network we mention very often around these parts, but news that they've given a pilot order to a "paranormal crime procedural drama" called "Stitchers" caught our attention so we're bringing it to yours!

Per Deadline, "Stitchers," written by Jeffrey A. Schechter executive produces alongside Jonathan Baruch and Rob Wolken. Production is slated to begin in June.

Meet Penny Dreadful's Sir Malcolm Murray In order to entice an actor of Timothy Dalton's stature to the small screen, the role of Sir Malcolm Murray in Showtime's "Penny Dreadful" must be quite juicy indeed. The network has just released a new promo video in which he and co-star Josh Hartnett discuss the character.

"Penny Dreadful" is created, written, and executive produced by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan (Hugo, The Aviator, Gladiator) and executive produced by Oscar winner Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall) and Neal Street's Pippa Harris (Revolutionary Road, "Call the Midwife").

Have a Seat for the First Teaser Trailer for The ChairThe powers-that-be behind the film adaptation of Alterna Comics'The Chair chose the right person to appear in their new teaser trailer. The great Bill Oberst, Jr., is front and center, and we can't think of anyone better to send shivers down our spines this fine Easter Sunday!

Producer, co-writer, and creator of the graphic novel Peter Simeti previously said of the teaser, "If [it] doesn't let you know what you'll be in store for, then nothing else will. We are making a horror film that has as much 'brains' in it as it does 'guts'."

Adaptation helmer Chad Ferrin and Dave DeFino co-directed the trailer, which stars Oberst as The Warden. Also appearing in the film are Eric Roberts, Naomi Grossman, Zach Galligan, Derrick Damions, Susan Eisenberg, Ezra Buzzington, Kyle Hester, Jacob Banser, Loren Lester, Timothy Muskatell, and Kin Shriner.

Easter Weekend Box Office: Transcendence Fails to Transcend, A Haunted House 2 Condemned

Easter Weekend Box Office: Transcendence Fails to Transcend, A Haunted House 2 CondemnedIt’s Easter weekend 2014, and unfortunately for Johnny Depp, the only Transcendence audiences were interested in was Heaven Is for Real while Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Rio 2 laughed all the way to the bank as they scared up more money than A Haunted House 2.

With comic book superheroes, 3D animated birds, and a kid who took The Sixth Sense to a whole new level by seeing not just dead people but also where they live ruling the top 3 slots at the box office, Johnny Depp’s fourth consecutive box office dud, Transcendence, flopped into 4th place.

The pricey science fiction thriller earned scathing critical reviews, poor audience word-of-mouth, and worst of all, a paltry $11.15 million opening. According to Box Office Mojo, even Stealth opened higher. That’s pretty bad. Pretty bad for Warner Bros, that is, who produced the film. Depp can surely drown the woes of his currently floundering film career in the comforts of his vast fortune, privately owned island, and Amber Heard. I wouldn’t feel too sorry for him just yet.

Maybe they could have just re-released The Lawnmower Man in 3D and saved everyone a lot of money?

Then there’s the sequel nobody wanted to the film even the people who enjoyed the original weren’t exactly all that enthusiastic about... Marlon Wayans’ A Haunted House 2 was condemned to 5th place and only $9.1 million, roughly half the original’s $18.1 million opening a year ago. The question now remains: Will there be a third installment, and if so, will David Zucker be brought in to replace the Wayans yet again?

Meanwhile, last week’s horror offering Oculus dropped over 50% to 8th place with $5.3 million. That brings it up to $21 million in two weeks. Art-house fare Under the Skin (in its third week of release) and The Raid 2 (with one extra week under its belt) earned $467,000 and $411,000 for respectable cumes of approximately $1.1 million and $2.3 million, respectively.

Next weekend brings a new horror offering in the form of The Quiet Ones, which I have been assured is not actually a prequel to The Apparition despite appearing to be based on the exact same experiment. Also, Paul Walker rises from the grave to do parkour in the Americanized remake Brick Mansions.
