The Book Club Would Really Like Your Vote at the Dailymotion Web Series Pilot Contest

$

The folks at Dailymotion, with a little help from the Raindance Web Fest, are searching for a really good series for their latest contest. And while horror doesn’t generally do very well in this particular competition, RedShirt Films wants to change all that. This is where your vote comes into play.

The production company put together a pilot for its web series “The Book Club,” which tells the story of the most active serial killer in the United Kingdom and the documentary filmmakers tasked with telling his story. It doesn’t take long for things to get pretty bloody.

RedShirt Films puts a finer point on the story:

Chester Mapleforth is one of the most active murderers in the UK, if not the world. Over the last few years he has killed over one hundred and thirty people in some of the most horrific, brutal ways you can imagine. The police are fully aware of him. They have his home address, phone number, and Twitter name.

But they can’t touch him. Chester and his little village seceded from the United Kingdom in 2009, and the first thing the residents of Chestersberg did was vote to make murder legal. In fact, it’s the favourite hobby of all the residents.

Enter filmmakers Jamie McKeller and Jack Hobbs. Armed with nothing but a camera, some sound recording gear, and a lust for the story… they have no idea what horrors they’re about to face.

If “The Book Club” wins, they’ll get £2,500 from Dailymotion and Raindance to turn it into a series. RedShirt Films hopes to produce eight episodes that will eventually get edited down to a feature-length flick. They’re aiming for early Peter Jackson, which is always a good thing in my book.

So what are you waiting for? Check out the pilot for “The Book Club,” and if you like what you see, take a moment to give them your vote. You can also find out more about the series by hanging around the official Facebook page. It’s what Chester Mapleforth would want.

Intrusion Suggests Playing Wrong Number Is a Very Bad Idea

If someone suggests that you should play a game called “Wrong Number,” then my advice is to tell them to buzz off (not to be confused with Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number because that game is awesome). After all, the person on the other end of the line may not think you’re very funny, and who knows what will happen after that? My guess is nothing good. At all.

Director Dru Pfeiffer and writer Craig Everett Earl take this concept and run with it in their horror flick Intrusion, which is set for release on DVD and Blu-ray on October 27. Although the film’s arrival is cutting it dangerously close, that’s still just in time for Halloween.

Here’s what Intrusion is all about:

Holly Jensen leads an overly dramatic life. It’s one that is spent trying to avoid her problems and forget the past. Best friend Kali has the perfect solution to making Holly feel better. It’s a game called “Wrong Number.” However, the man on the other end finds the joke less than funny and decides to play a game of his own. A game where Holly will become the pawn. It’s a character-driven thriller where everything has consequences and something as beautiful as a rose can be turned into any woman’s worst nightmare.

If you like extras, here’s what the DVD and Blu-ray will feature.

– Commentary with Writer/Producer Craig Everett Earl, Katie Stewart, Lee Haycraft, and Teresa Lawrence

Francesca Unveils One Seriously Killer Poster

It’s not difficult to get ridiculously excited about Luciano and Nicolás Onetti’s upcoming thriller Francesca. The filmmakers are beyond talented, and if you need proof, I wholeheartedly implore you to check out Sonno Profondo (aka Deep Sleep). These guys aren’t simply paying homage to giallos, they’re delivering the real deal. I apologize — sometimes I have a tendency to gush.

Thankfully, we’ve gotten our hands on the latest poster for Francesca, and it’s lovely. But before you decide to gawk at the colorful artwork down below, let’s bring you up-to-speed on the film’s plot:

It’s been 15 years since the disappearance of little Francesca, daughter of the renowned storyteller, poet, and dramatist Vittorio Visconti; and the community is stalked by a psychopath bent on cleaning the city of “impure and damned souls.” Moretti and Succo, questioned by the ineffectiveness of the police force, are the detectives in charge of elucidating the mystery surrounding these “Dantesque” crimes. Francesca seems to have returned, but she is not the same girl whom everyone knew…

Francesca is set to premiere at the Sitges Film Festival this October, so if you’re in attendance, definitely check it out. That way you can tell me how good it is and I can get insanely jealous and cry about it. Meanwhile, let’s take a look at the new poster together, shall we?

The Boom Boom Girls of Wrestling Play Chicken with a Killer

Writer/director Carolin Von Petzholdt’s upcoming slasher The Boom Boom Girls of Wrestling finds a handful of very tough, very attractive ladies battling a deranged killer dressed like a giant chicken. If you can find a more unusual horror flick this year, please, I would really like to know about it. The film’s setup may seem familiar, but the ingredients are definitely unique.

Here’s the story in a nutshell: A group of professional wrestlers are headed to a gig when they suddenly find themselves in an abandoned town in the middle of nowhere. To make matters worse, there’s someone in a chicken costume picking them off one by one. Fortunately, these aren’t the type of women who will put up with the shenanigans of a bloodthirsty killer.

The Boom Boom Girls of Wrestling is set for release on November 3, though we’re not sure if this will hit DVD, Blu-ray, VOD, theaters, or all four at once. To keep you occupied until then, take a look at the trailer below. Checking out the official website is also highly encouraged.

LaVey Graphic Novel and Television Miniseries in the Works

Controversial Church of Satan founder Anton Szandor LaVey has inspired everything from music to movies to comic books. Now, filmmaker Todd Newman and actor/producer Daniel Louis Rivas will attempt to unravel the mysteries surrounding the “most evil man in the world” in the proposed television miniseries “LaVey.” In addition to the series, Newman and Rivas are working on a graphic novel with the help of the Pander Brothers. Color me deeply intrigued.

From the Press Release:
Todd Newman (director/producer, “Mourning Son”) and Daniel Louis Rivas (Actor NCIS, American Crime, Hand of God, Producer “Junkie”) have written “LaVey”, a TV mini-series pilot script based on Anton Szandor LaVey, the infamous founder of the Church of Satan.

Known during his lifetime as the ‘most evil man in the world’, LaVey’s attitudes and lifestyle resonated with many insiders of the Hollywood upper echelon from the 1960’s until his death in 1997, including Jayne Mansfield, Sammy Davis Jr., Marilyn Manson and Liberace.

‘LaVey’ will uncover the myths and realities of this his life and times including those deeply affected by his cultural presence including notorious serial-killer Richard Ramirez and Manson Family member Susan Atkins.

Newman and Rivas are producing along with Charisse Sanzo (“Junkie”) and Will De Los Santos (co-writer “Spun” and director/writer of the upcoming feature film "Tranzloco"). De Los Santos will also be a contributing writer on subsequent episodes.

In conjunction with a series, the producers are developing a ‘LaVey’ graphic novel with acclaimed artists/filmmakers The Pander Brothers (Arnold and Jacob), whose comic books include, “Batman… City of Light”/DC, “Grendel… Devil’s Legacy”, and “GirlFEIND”/DarkHorse. The Panders will also be brought in to co-produce the series.

Discussions for the pilot’s director and lead talent are underway.

Hopefully, we’ll hear more about the proposed “LaVey” TV miniseries and graphic novel in the near future. While we’re waiting, check out some artwork from the graphic novel below.

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015)

$

The_Maze_Runner_poster (1)Starring Dylan O’Brien, Thomas Sangster, Barry Pepper

Directed by Wes Ball

Distributed by 20th Century Fox

In this age in which large studios are afraid to release anything unless they are certain that it has franchise potential, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is a classic example of how the desperation to cash in with the other successful films on the market can really kill the film.

What made the first Maze Runner film so effective was that we really got to feel a sense of community. We got to know the small group of characters and the isolated world in which they live without anything to hinder it. We don’t know anything about the rest of the world outside the maze or become over-encumbered with details. All we know is that we’re watching the day-to-day lives of people trying to adjust to a situation of which they are as clueless as the audience.

With the sequel that’s all lost. From the opening moments, when we see hundreds if not thousands of kids who were also apparently subjected to mazes, we know that the sense of feeling as though we were a part of the small world that the first film established is gone. Before long it deteriorates into yet another Hunger Games style “unite the people to fight the oppressive government regime” flick. Apparently that has become part of the required checklist for YA adaptations. What else can we add to that list? Let’s see…

  • Protagonist delivers rousing speech to the masses, convincing them to fight on his side? Check.
  • Wandering though a post-apocalyptic wasteland and being saddened by all the destruction? Check.
  • Meeting another resistance faction and discovering that they share the same goals? Check.
  • Discovering that those in authority are evil? Check.
  • Evil, two-dimensional figure of authority who wants to rule? Check.
  • A scene where the villains kill civilians to emphasize how evil they are? Check.

It seems like they chucked all the young adult tropes into a blender, and an incoherent, jumbled mess is the unfortunate end result. I mean, who cares about originality when you have audience expectations to appease?

Oh, and did I mention that there are zombies this time? Yup… ugly, snarling, flesh-eating zombies. A lot of them, too. Because in a film so starved of originality and so desperate to add in as many common popular elements as possible, why not? Zombies are huge right now, right? So they should give the movie more appeal, right? They seem to be forgetting that what made the Grievers from the first film so memorable was that they were original, which seems to be something of a dirty word round these parts.

Dylan O’Brien returns as protagonist Thomas, but rather than having any emotional investment in him as we did before (i.e., we wanted to know who he was and how his journey would end), he now simply appears to be just there. His motivations are to escape, then to raise an army or something, but there’s now so much going on that it becomes impossible to care.

The budget’s also been increased. Big time. We have skyscrapers falling, a massive battle sequence, and even spaceships. This “Hell, if it can be used in the trailer, throw it in” mentality pretty much cuts anything of substance happening off at the knees. Not good for a movie with the word “runner” in the title.

With the young adult craze now entering its twilight (sorry), Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is bound to be remembered as the film that helped it die. Unlike its predecessor, which actually bought some much needed originality to the genre, this is such a by the numbers rehash of all the other YA films that after watching it, it will simply become a blur in your memory where you won’t be able to distinguish it from them. You’ll be thinking that the characters were actually from The Hunger Games or Divergent, and the stories from each film will become indistinguishable. I hope that studio executives don’t read this review as that will probably inspire them to make a crossover.

This could very well be the worst sequel of the year. If the first Maze Runner was a nice breath of fresh air in the YA craze, then The Scorch Trials is a big, loud fart from someone who’s been eating burritos.

Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 Trailer Showcases Crazy New Characters

A very cool trailer for Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 has been released, which showcases some of the new classes and abilities that will be at your disposal.

For the first time in the franchise, the tables have been turned; and the zombies have won, taking over Boney Island from the plants, who are now trying to reclaim it. They’ll do this with the help of Rose, a sorcerer from the past; the aptly named, machine-gun wielding Kernal Corn; and Citron, a bounty hunting orange.

The zombies will defend against the plants with the pirate Captain Deadbeard, who is an expert at long-range attacks in addition to having to ability to transform into a parrot; zombie imps, who are equipped with tech from the future; and the superhero Super Brainz, complete with exceptional hair and a charismatic smile.

In total there’ll be 14 classes with over 100 characters. If this trailer is anything to go by, the game would win the “Most Inventive and Crazy Characters Award” if such a thing existed.

Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 will be released in spring 2016.

New Dishonored 2 Video Showcases The Tropical Setting

Bethesda has released a new Dishonored 2 video recorded during E3 that showcases the tropical island Karnaca, which will be the game’s primary setting and is a far cry from the first game’s grey and miserable Dunwall. You gotta give it to them for literally taking the sequel in a different direction.

You can choose to play as either Emily or Corvo, two characters from before, as you try to reclaim the throne from an otherworldly usurper. And, instead of the rats from the previous game, the equally nasty blood-flies will now be the pests that can menace both you and your enemies.

The sequel to the classic 2012 game will be released next year.

Dark Souls 3 Trailer and Release Info

Publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment has revealed that Dark Souls 3 will be released in April 2016.

The legendary Hidetaka Miyazaki returns to direct the third installment of his series, which will embrace classic RPG elements more than the previous games, with deeper customization options for weapons, items, and armor. New abilities, such as War Cry, can be used to boost the player’s attacks, and magic will be a common element in the gameplay.

The first two Dark Souls games were famed for being throwbacks to classic old school RPGs, complete with epic boss fights and levels of difficulty which really made you think about how to play it. Judging from what we’ve seen so far, Dark Souls 3 appears to carry on the winning formula.

Dark Souls 3 will be released on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Osgood Perkins’ February Starring Emma Roberts Acquired by A24

Filmmaker/actor Osgood Perkins (son of the legendary Psycho star Anthony Perkins) made his directorial debut with the horror flick February, which stars Emma Roberts, James Remar, Lauren Holly, and Kiernan Shipka. Thankfully, the boys and girls at DirecTV and A24 have acquired distribution rights to the flick, though we don’t have a release date to share as of this writing.

The film has generated some pretty strong reviews at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, which is likely why A24 didn’t waste any time snapping this one up for distribution. And if you haven’t seen the trailer yet, then you can fix that problem at the bottom of this article.

This synopsis should help set the stage:

Beautiful and haunted Joan makes a bloody and determined pilgrimage across a frozen landscape toward a prestigious all-girls prep school where Rose and Kat find themselves stranded after their parents mysteriously fail to retrieve them for winter break. As Joan gets closer, terrifying visions begin plaguing Kat while Rose watches in horror as she becomes possessed by an unseen evil force.

As soon as we figure out when February is about to hit theaters, VOD, or DVD/Blu-ray, we’ll certainly let you know. Until then, feast your eyes on the trailer down below.

Hidetaka Miyazaki will be remembered as one of gaming’s greatest, alongside Shigeru Miyamoto and Hideo Kojima. In addition to the outstanding Bloodborne and the upcoming Dark Souls 3, the guy never seems to take a break as Bloodborne is getting a story expansion.

Unveiled at the Tokyo Game Show, Bloodborne: The Old Hunters will tell the stories of the ancient monster hunters of Byrgenwerth, who were often mentioned in the first game. Aside from that, story details are being kept under wraps. but as you can see from the trailer, there’ll be tons of big, ugly monsters to kill.

Bloodborne: The Old Hunters will be released on PS4 on 24th November.

Cast Dismissed for New Thriller

Honor students. Yeah, they play the prim and proper role perfectly, but no matter how angelic one may appear, you can be sure there’s a dark side just waiting to escape. Case in point… Dismissed.

From the Press Release
Mumblecore veteran and recent Emmy-winner Kent Osborne (UNCLE KENT, DIGGING FOR FIRE) and Dylan Sprouse (Disney’s “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody,” BIG DADDY) have joined the cast of BoulderLight Pictures’ thriller DISMISSED, which marks the feature directorial debut of Benjamin Arfmann, who previously directed the acclaimed SXSW short Random Stop. Rounding out the dynamic cast will be Randall Park (THE INTERVIEW), Chris Bauer (“True Blood”), and Alycia Delmore (HUMPDAY).

DISMISSED will be produced by J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures (CONTRACTED franchise and the upcoming DEMENTIA for IFC Films), who are teaming up with Sev Ohanian (FRUITVALE STATION). The film was written by Brian McAuley. Executive producing is Pang Ho-Cheung, whose Making Film Limited is financing the entire picture.

The film will shoot this month in Los Angeles with world sales on the film being handled by BoulderLight and Bravos Pictures Limited.

In the film an idealistic, straight-laced English teacher (Osborne; pictured left) is drawn down a nightmarish rabbit hole by an honor roll student (Sprouse; pictured right) who will stop at nothing to get an “A.”

BL1 BL2

“We couldn’t be more excited about the team assembled here and cannot wait to unleash this original and gripping story onto audiences worldwide,” said Lifshitz and Margules.

Sprouse is best known as one half of the Sprouse Brothers sibling team that starred in the Disney Channel hit “The Suite Life of Zach and Cody” as well as the spinoff, “The Suite Life on Deck.”

Osborne is a well-known television writer, winning an Emmy this year for Outstanding Short-Format Animated program for Cartoon Network’s “Adventure Time.” He was also nominated for 8 additional primetime Emmys and has been a screenwriter and actor in a number of films associated with the mumblecore movement. He most recently starred in and wrote the indie feature UNCLE KENT 2 , which just won the Visions Audience Award at SXSW.

A Full Moon #TBT Post from November 1993

I grew up loving horror movies. Big surprise, right? Like most of us, I had my favorite slashers and franchises growing up. Just like some kids were Pepsi kids and some kids were Coke kids, I was a Full Moon and Freddy kid. Though over the years I have come to favor Jason slightly more than the others (emphasis on slightly).

When my mom and dad divorced, we lived with my grandparents for a while; and even after she was on her feet in a place of our own, I would go on to spend my summers off from school at my grandparents’ house watching horror movies and playing video games. Like in any average household of the time, my grandpa read the newspaper every day and would clip out what he and my grandma called “Jon jokes” from the comics section and leave them out for me with my breakfast. My grandma always made the best fucking pancakes, and they bought powdered jelly-filled donuts just for me. It was the best of times, it was the worst FUCKING BEST of times.

But I digress. After reading the comics, I would always read the Arts section of the newspaper, looking for movie showtimes and keeping up on what horror movies were out. This was still probably 8 years before the internet would really take off so this section of the newspaper was like my lifeline to the horror genre. My friends and I would rent horror movies on VHS or work our asses off to get enough allowance money to go to the movies, which was often. Do kids even get allowances anymore? It seems like every toddler waddling down the street has their own iPhone these days; I can’t even imagine explaining half the stuff we used to have to put up with. I saw a picture recently of some dumbass shoving his phone into a cassette deck thinking it was a cell phone charger. I hate to think what they would do with an 8-track deck.

This was the golden era of HBO, by the way; you could turn that channel on any time of the day and wind up catching The Goonies, Monster Squad, Big Trouble in Little China… no matter when you looked, something amazing was either on or coming on soon. Kids today have no idea how awesome movies were in the 80’s and 90’s. Films like Turbo Kid bring a huge smile to my face because it is such a throwback to the films I grew up on as a kid. For me, though, nothing really captures the essence of being a fan like the early Puppet Master films do. They were such a pivotal part of my life at that time. I am not kidding when I say we basically lived for horror movies and video games then.

One day I flipped to the Arts section to see a huge picture of Charles Band with his creations. I was so stoked. I LOVED the Puppet Master movies by that time, but the franchise only had 4 films to its credit then. I would dig through every tape on the shelf at our local video rental shop looking for Full Moon titles I had never seen and pestering the owners about getting new Puppet Master movies. They would argue with me about when the next movie was coming out and I would come back again and again looking for part 5. My friends and I spent our summers for the next few years eagerly awaiting new entries in the Puppet Master series. Any time I would find one, it was fucking on, man. Pizza. Soda. SNES. Lights out. VHS player in full effect. No matter how good a movie is today, it pales in comparison to watching Puppet Master 4 on the living room floor with Bagel Bites and Top Ramen. That to me will always be what horror means.

My grandparents and my mom have all passed at this point. My grandpa was the first to go, and then my grandma a few years later. Then, in some odd circuitous turn of events, my mom actually moved back into my grandparents’ house after her mother passed away. It wouldn’t be too long after my grandma’s passing that my mom would have a stroke that would take her away from us in March of 2014. She wasn’t even old enough to retire yet… Probate is coming to a close, and we had to pack up her belongings along with some of my grandparents’ belongings that she had kept at the house. That’s why I found myself at their old house this week going through boxes of my old stuff in the garage. Much to my amazement the first box I opened had that article I saved with Charles Band and his machinations in it sitting on the very top of a bunch of old newspapers I kept for various reasons.

We have been helping Full Moon get the word out about their crowdfunding campaign this month for their new films, and I had been thinking of this article since I first spoke to Charles last year when we did the Full Moon Box of Dread in July ’14. I thought it would be cool to find it again having actually met Charlie several times now. This article is from 22 years ago and I could still have told you what it looked like without even looking at it. Somehow the very first box I opened had that clipping sitting right on top as if to say, “Here I am.”

Robin Cowie Talks Bringing the Frights to Howl-O-Scream

RobinCowieLet’s face it – some of these theme park Halloween celebrations over the past few years have been dusty, stagnant, and frankly not enough to make even a young child wet his pants and cry for his mommy. Busch Gardens, however, has opted to call in a little professional reinforcement for its annual Howl-O-Scream event in not one or two of its parks, but three (Busch Gardens Tampa, Williamsburg, and Seaworld San Antonio).

Robin Cowie, the producer of such spine-chillers as The Blair Witch Project, V/H/S/2, and Lovely Molly, will lend his talents to bring “Unearthed: Scarlett’s Revenge” to life, and he managed to squeeze in enough time to give us the lowdown on just what he’ll be bringing to the table this Halloween, so settle in and enjoy!

DC: For the people that plan on attending but aren’t aware of what they’re getting themselves into, can you give us a little description?

RC: Howl-O-Scream is something that Busch Gardens has been doing for almost 16 years now, if I’m correct, and it takes place in three different locations. I got brought on, and we did a brainstorm to talk about the event. I’d been to it before as a fan, and one of the things that I love about it is they’re very serious about their scares, so that was very interesting to me. That then developed into me helping them create a theme, and that started to grow, and they’ve never before brought all three parks together where you have the same theme, and that theme flows through everything online, from the marketing message to the experience that happens when you come to the park, all centered on that theme. For me it was the opportunity to go from 2D filmmaking to a 4D surround, terrifying experience.

DC: What did you see as the biggest difference between producing films to now working on something as expansive as this?

RC: There was a lot of material that we delivered in a traditional film sense. We made four fake documentaries, and we created a website that a story was behind, and then a short film, then onto commercials, and then filmed material that will play inside the houses, and in a way that was traditional. The difference was all of the design and set dressing that’s usually contained to what’s inside my camera, it had to be designed with the idea that when you walk into the house, now you’ll be able to look 360 degrees, and you’ll be able to get up close to it, so the story really had to surround you. In addition to that, a haunted house experience is a very different kind of experience than that of a film where you’ve usually got 90 minutes to build up tension and scare people. In a haunted house you’ve got very different demands that have to happen within that space, so it was challenging and so much fun to work these guys that have done haunted house setup for a long time. I was able to bring in people from my film world like cinematographer John Rutland (Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension) and production designer Andrew White (Goosebumps), and the theme park guys could be brought into the film world, so it really worked out well.

DC: You were obviously in close contact with the people at the park on this one – were you allowed full creative control, or was there a point where you had to reel it in a bit?

RC: In any creative endeavor there’s always going to be physical constraints, based on time, budget, geography – all of those types of things, and right from the beginning, I said that one of the things that I love is that you guys go for it – this is a full-on scary thing, and if you’re cool with me going a ways with it, I’m going to push it as far as I can to make it as intense as possible.  I can honestly say that in every park we’re doing some crazy things – don’t bring your kids – don’t bring your little ones! We also tried to mix up the scares so that it’s not a traditional house. Yesterday I came from the third house… and I’m so psyched – it turned out really well.

BehindtheScenes

DC: After the Halloween season has passed and this event is over, what can we look forward to from you?

RC: I’m still making films, although I’ve got to say I really enjoyed working in the theme park world, and I’m really interested in that. I’m currently developing a series of 360-degree short films, and I’m really interested in virtual reality and what can be done in the horror world with that. I think that being part of Howl-O-Scream and getting the opportunity to really explore other mediums – I’ve had a wonderful 22 years working in other spaces, but I really love what I’m doing right now.
