No Exorcist Remake for Morgan Creek

$
0
0

In news that will have horror fans everywhere breathing a sigh of relief, Morgan Creek has taken to its Twitter account to officially announce that the company has absolutely no plans to remake The Exorcist, thus confirming William Friedkin’s thoughts from last week.

Sequels and prequels, though? They’re still very much on the table, and once again I will take this time to plead with the studios to take their upcoming entries (whatever they may be) and not set them in Africa as after several films it has been proven that such a setting, despite being steeped in lore, just does NOT work.

Thanks, and you’re welcome.

Romero’s Aftermath, Made in Collaboration with George C. Romero, Coming to Steam

George C. Romero, the talented son of the legendary zombie filmmaker, collaborated with Free Reign Entertainment on Romero’s Aftermath, a new free-to-play survival horror which is now available for download.

This isn’t the first time that the family has delved into the world of video games. Romero Sr. directed a commercial for Resident Evil 2 and came close to directing the film adaptation of the series. His son is an avid gamer and was thriller when the project came his way, saying, “I’ve long been a fan of survival horror games, and when I had the opportunity to collaborate on Aftermath, I jumped at the chance to bring my experience working on horror films into a new medium. Free Reign has built a great title that I think players are going to love, whether they’re new to the survival horror genre or a huge fan like myself.”

Romero’s Aftermath is about zombies. Because what the hell else would it be about? It’s also set in a large open world environment, so you’ll have plenty of room to search for things to kill.

Synopsis:
Play with your friends in a zombie-infested world as you face the remnants of zombie hordes and rebuild society in a truly massive sandbox world. Choose how you want to play with hundreds of items, skins, weapons, character customizations, base building, crafting, zombies, and more!

You can downlaod Romero’s Aftermath on Steam and also check out the official site.

Romero Jr. also has several upcoming movies in the works, including the hostage thriller Radical.

The EditorStarring Adam Brooks, Matthew Kennedy, Udo Kier, Paz de la Huerta

Directed by Adam Brooks & Matthew Kennedy

Distributed by Scream Factory

After beginning in the early ‘60s, exploding in the ‘70s, and coasting through the ‘80s, there was a precipitous drop in the number of Italian giallo pictures being released thereafter. The only director keeping the movement afloat was Dario Argento, the man responsible for some of the greatest Italian horror films ever made, and if you’re familiar with his output post-‘90s then you are likely aware his efforts did little to bolster the sagging subgenre. Recently, however, filmmakers have begun to produce pictures heavily influenced by those seminal works of the ‘70s. While some have made attempts to slavishly replicate their influences – for example, Amer (2009) and The Strange Color of Your Body’s Tears (2013) – one film has chosen to veer off into parody territory: The Editor (2014). Put together by a trio of guys from Canada, The Editor is a faithful production that employs all of the trademark techniques and trappings of giallo, while at the same time skewering some of the more outlandish aspects of those pictures. The film perfectly imitates the directorial flourishes of Argento, Mario Bava, and Lucio Fulci to such a fantastic degree that it made me wish the humor had been dialed down a bit; it prevents a good film from being great.

Rey Ciso (Adam Brooks) used to be a giant in the world of film editing, but when an accident left his right hand minus four fingers the only work he’s now able to get is cutting low-budget horror pictures. Any respect he once commanded is now gone, including from his wife, Josephine (Paz de la Huerta), who has fallen on equally hard times. She used to be one of the hottest actresses in Italy, now she’s just a chain-smoking has-been. Rey finds himself at the center of controversy when a murderer begins gruesomely dispatching those involved with the film he’s currently editing, with the killer leaving a damning calling card: cutting the fingers off his victims’ right hands. On the case is Detective Porfiry (Matthew Kennedy), a wily cop who sees Rey as the prime suspect, although with this being a giallo, viewers should be aware that nearly everyone is a suspect; red herrings are a staple of these films, after all. As the bodies bloodily pile up, and the overt eroticism reaches incredible heights, Rey finds himself in a game of cat-and-mouse with a killer who delights in taunting the disrespected editing legend.

There’s a very fine line to stride when making a parody that also works as an actual film because, should the comedy be too absurd, the quality of the film suffers. So much of what Brooks and Kennedy – who in addition to starring in the film also wrote and directed it – have done here is perfect – the Bava-esque lighting choices, the gloved killer POV shots ripped directly from Argento, the ocular torture and blinded-white eyes of Fulci. “The Editor” is a wonderful amalgamation of all the giallo staples, done to perfection.

Then there’s the comedy. Some of it – like the woman whose eyes go white with blindness after seeing a victim; or the actors whose mouths frequently don’t match their words (a love letter to bad dubbing) – works well. But there are ridiculous moments that go too far over the top, and those took me out of the movie. Without nitpicking specifics, it’s simply an overall tone that permeates certain moments and turns them into something more akin to a Zucker & Abrams picture. Had the film toned down these moments, the movie could have stood on its own as a legit giallo while also slyly lampooning some of the subgenres more ludicrous facets.

There is a hesitation to condemn some of the film’s deficiencies because, being that this is a parody, anything that is “wrong” can simply be chalked up to giallo adherence. The dubbing is often poor. The story is convoluted. Editing is sometimes choppy. The second act drags. And the ending is confounding. These “problems” are, of course, endemic to nearly every giallo out there – even the celebrated ones. In the spirit of authenticity everything must be intentional, even if it comes at the expense of tightening up the film. What Brooks and Kennedy were able to accomplish with $150,000 and a truckload of ambition is impressive, and while not everything in “The Editor” worked for me enough of it is done so damn well it’s impossible not to recommend it to giallo fans.

In keeping with the retro aesthetic, the film’s 2.35:1 1080p picture is not entirely pristine and slick; however, for the majority of the runtime the image is exceedingly crisp and detailed. Colors are richly saturated, sometimes too much so (intentionally), and there are lots of scenes using blue or red gels. There are some minor compression issues in regard to black levels, which sometimes look a little hazy. Flashback and film-within-the-film footage usually looks scratchy and rough. As a whole, though, this is a beautiful image, replete with wild colors and practically dripping off the screen.

The lossless English DTS-HD MA 5.1 surround sound track capably handles the film’s moody, synth-driven score composed by a roster of acclaimed talent that includes Claudio Simonetti. Dialogue is delivered clearly, even when the mouths are intentionally out of synch with the words. Rear speaker assistance is minimal, though the front end pumps out enough of a dynamic experience that can be overlooked. An English DTS-HD MA 2.0 stereo track is also included. Subtitles are available in English.

The audio commentary features Adam Brooks, Conor Sweeney and Matt Kennedy (all of whom wear multiple hats here) delivering a lively, energetic track full of actor backgrounds, production history, location shooting and just about anything else you might want to know.

“Making Movies Used to be Fun” – This incredibly comprehensive making-of features interviews with all of the film’s principals and shows off lots of behind-the-scenes footage including much of the glorious FX work.

“Hook Lab Interview”, “Brett Parson Poster Interview” and an “Astron-6 Film Festival Introduction” are all tongue in cheek pieces poking fun at the film’s retro vibe.

A handful of deleted scenes (in HD) are also included, as well as a DVD copy of the film.

  • ”Making Movies Used To Be Fun” Documentary

Horror Manga Legend Junji Ito Was Also Working on Silent Hills

If you’re still grieving over the loss of Silent Hills, then I’m afraid that I’ve got some news that will ruin your day.

Guillermo del Toro revealed on his Twitter that in addition to himself, Hideo Kojima, and Norman Reedus, horror manga legend Junji Ito was also involved with the project.

Del Toro only joined Twitter 11 days ago, and here’s what he had to say about Ito’s involvement via a series of tweets:

Known for his work on series such as Uzumaki, Tomi, and Gyo, Ito would have been an incredible addition to the already impressive list of talents involved with the game. Along with Hideshi Hino, whom del Toro mentioned above, he’s most well known for the “body horror” sub-genre so he would have helped to make the game especially nasty.

It kind of seems like Silent Hills was going to be an Avengers style team-up between a whole bunch of awesome people before Konami unceremoniously pulled the plug. The fact that Konami have gone so damn insane recently and still own franchises like Silent Hill and Metal Gear seems kind of similar to leaving a kid in the custody of an abusive parent who is going to continue to beat them and cause them harm.

But hey, Allison Roads is still raising funds, so at least we might be kind of getting the game. Emphasis on “kind of.”

Catherine Coulson, Twin Peaks’ Log Lady, Passes Away at 71

Actress Catherine Coulson, who is probably best known to “Twin Peaks” fans as the Log Lady, passed away at the age of 71 on Monday (September 28). In addition to starring in Lynch’s classic television series, Coulson worked as the assistant director on Eraserhead. She was also previously married to Eraserhead star Jack Nance, though the couple split in 1976.

David Lynch released a statement after learning of Coulson’s passing.

Today I lost one of my dearest friends, Catherine Coulson. Catherine was solid gold. She was always there for her friends — she was filled with love for all people — for her family — for her work. She was a tireless worker. She had a great sense of humor — she loved to laugh and make people laugh. She was a spiritual person — a longtime TM meditator. She was the Log Lady.

Catherine Coulson’s role on “Twin Peaks” may have been small, but fans of the show will forever remember the town’s quirky Log Lady. Our condolences to the talented actress’ family and friends.

Nat Wolff to Topline Death Note Adaptation

After the announcement that You’re Next director Adam Wingard would helm the American Death Note movie, we now have confirmation that none other that Nat Wolff, from Paper Towns and The Fault in Our Stars, will play the lead role of the character Light, courtesy of Variety.

Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata’s 30+ million selling manga series follows a teenager called Light who comes into possession of mythical notebooks known as the Death Notes, which can cause whoever has their name written in them to die, created by demons known as the Shinigami or “Death Gods,” and the efforts of the eccentric detective L to stop him from cleansing the world.

It will be interesting to see Wolff play such a villainous character as it will be so vastly different from everything that we’ve seen from him so far. And he’s in good hands, as the script was provided by Jeremy Slater, who was also responsible for writing such great movies as, eh, this year’s Fantastic Four. But he did later state that his script bore little resemble to the final product, so let’s give the guy a break and hope that he does a good job.

Death Note is expected to start shooting next spring. In the meantime, there’s also another Japanese film adaptation in development.

I couldn’t be happier to be involved with distributing this one.

Darling is a love letter to those chilling, old-school horror films that get under your skin and stay there,” added Keating. “I’m thrilled and honored to be teaming up with Screen Media to cause some serious nightmares for audiences around the globe.

A Christmas Horror Story’s Rob Archer Gets an Awesome Krampus Tattoo

I’m one of those seriously annoying guys who always says, “I don’t have any tattoos right now, but, golly, I’d be swell to have one.” Maybe not those exact words, but it’s pretty close. Although I have plenty of “cool” ideas, I simply can’t commit. Pulling the proverbial trigger is difficult, and as I get older, I’m getting pickier about what I want permanently inked onto my body. Such is life.

One person who clearly doesn’t have that problem is A Christmas Horror Story star Rob Archer. The actor who portrays Krampus in the aforementioned motion picture recently decided to get a tattoo of his character, an event that was captured on video and shared online. The process looks painful, but the end result is nothing short of badass. You can see for yourself down below via Bloody Disgusting.

Okay, okay — that headline is a little misleading. It may have sounded like I was about to ramble on about another Halloween attraction opening for business somewhere in the United States, but that’s not the case. However, filmmaker Erik Bloomquist no doubt hopes that you will check out his short film Ghost Tour when it arrives online this October. Just in time for Halloween!

Filmed at the Mark Twain House and Museum in Hartford, Connecticut, Bloomquist’s creepy tale chronicles a tour guide’s ghostly experiences with the supernatural.

The official synopsis explores the plot in a bit more detail:

November 30, 1973. After the final ghost tour at a museum with a legendary dark past, veteran docent Richard Sawyer experiences his first real encounter with the paranormal.

Although it’s unclear when Ghost Tour will arrive online, the press release claims it will appear during the peak of the Halloween season. Check out the short film’s official Facebook page to stay up-to-date on when that might happen. Meanwhile, the trailer is ready for your undivided attention.

Terrordactyl Terrorizes Los Angeles in New Images

I’m always in the mood for a cheesy, low-budget monster movie, and Terrordactyl seems to fit that bill perfectly. Directed by Don Bitters III and Geoff Reisner, the flick explores what happens when prehistoric reptiles start attacking people in Los Angeles. Spoiler alert: relentless mayhem!

Movieweb offers up this handy synopsis:

When a meteor shower rains down outside Los Angeles, Lars (Christopher John Jennings) and Jonas (Jason Tobias), two friends stuck in tired, boring lives, head out to find one and strike it rich. After recovering one, they start being stalked by Terrordactyls, ancient flying reptiles, that launch a full-on assault on the city. They go on the run, trying to survive, where the unlikely heroes, along with Candice (Candice Nunes), a tough-and-sexy bartender, Valerie (Bianca Haase), her sultry roommate, and Sampson (Jack E. Curenton), a constantly drunk and sassy ex-Marine, soon discover that there’s more to the meteor than meets the eye. They must learn to put their differences aside and fight back to make the Terrordactyls extinct once again.

Terrordactyl doesn’t have a proper release date yet, but it should arrive sometime in 2016. However, that shouldn’t stop you from thoroughly enjoying the following images.

The Killage (UK DVD)

The Killage UK DVD SleeveStarring Rita Artmann, Joe Bauer, Dryden Bingham, Daniel Johnston Andrew O’Sullivan

Directed by Joe Bauer

Distributed by Left Films

It would be unfair given my recent remarks toward Fury: The Tales of Ronan Pierce (review) for its exceptionally obvious ADR if I didn’t let it be known that The Killage suffers from the same problem. It seems that just about every piece of dialogue in this low budget indie slasher/comedy is looped in post-production, and it’s off-puttingly awkward.

But there’s also one huge difference between the two: The Killage is less likely to make you crush your own carotid artery in a desperate search for sweet release than it is to have you grip your sides in good-natured laughter.

In Joe Bauer’s flick, a group of young co-workers are brought together for a team-building forest retreat only to discover that one of their number is a psychopathic killer. Picking them off one by one, the wooden-masked murderer butchers their way through the tribe in standard slasher film style while the hapless, constantly bickering survivors try to figure out who the culprit is.

Focused more on the comedy than it is the scares, The Killage is a relatively simple affair sporting an obviously amateur cast… one which, with few exceptions — most notably Artmann as kickass-survivor-with-sex-appeal Emily — feels like little more than a group of friends who have set out to have a fun time making their own film. It’s juvenile and low-brow, throwing out dick jokes, piss jokes, an asshole character named Dickman (who also happens to be in a wheelchair) and a swathe of stereotypes, like Scary Movie crossed with everything-be-damned Aussie humour — but it works.

From the hilariously deadpan performance by Andrew O’Sullivan as the knuckleheaded (and almost perpetually nude) Jock to some great running jokes such as Andre (Cameron Sowden) constantly asserting the fact that he doesn’t do drugs, at even the slightest provocation, there’s rarely a couple of minutes that go by without a clever call-back or piece of smart-mouthed smarm.

Things are occasionally pushed too far — talking severed heads, for example, just don’t work in this realm of mere slapstick — but for the most part it does well in managing its own levels. It isn’t for everyone, make no mistake — if you demand biting satire, anything remotely intellectual, or take affront to stereotypes or “lazy” humour when it comes to your comedy you’d do well to give The Killage a wide berth.

There’s plenty of gory mayhem to go around, marred only occasionally by an abundance of CGI which is glaringly lo-fi in some spots, but really quite impressively rendered in others given the home-grown nature of the film. It’s rough in more than a few places — there’s no denying that — but The Killage manages to overcome its limitations by offering plenty of spark and a breezy willingness to please.

An unexpected delight, The Killage proves a worthwhile treat once adjusted to its particular stride and irreverent outlook.

Left Films bring The Killage to UK DVD sporting a stable of special features that puts most other releases of small indie flicks to shame. First up, there’s a lively cast and crew feature commentary, followed by a staggering 85 minutes of “fly on the wall” style behind-the-scenes footage. After that, director Bauer steps in for a 33-minute look at the film’s digital visual effects… and there’s a hell of lot more in there than you’d think. This is a very enlightening and surprising featurette, made a lot of fun to watch by Bauer’s self-deprecating humour and openness.

Next up there’s a short featurette on the the film’s music (which ends rather amusingly in the composing software crashing), around 30 minutes of outtakes and bloopers, two trailers and two photo galleries from the film’s shooting which are backed up with commentary by Artmann and Bauer.

Finally, the entire 167 pages of The Killage‘s storyboards are yours to watch unfold, accompanied by the film’s score, should you wish.

A superb package overall. You simply couldn’t ask for more when it comes to a film of this stature.

  • Commentary with Rita Artmann, Dryden Bingham, Andrew O’Sullivan & Joe Bauer
  • Behind the Scenes
  • Visual Effects Featurette
  • Music Featurette
