Interactive Horror Novel This Book Is a Dungeon Now on Steam

0
0

Described as a “story-driven horror adventure,” the new indie game This Book Is a Dungeon, is, as the title would suggest, a dungeon crawler, albeit with a twist. This time, rather than have you controlling the characters directly, it instead takes the form of an interactive novel where you can interact with the environment via narrative-driven prose.

So it will be more like a novel than a game, but there will be some more traditional video game elements, such as “combat and inventory.” This certainly seems like it could be something completely unique. Head over to Steam to see for yourself.

Synopsis:
Auto-cannibalism. Demonic seduction. Occult rituals. Bloodfeasting worms. This Book Is a Dungeon has it all and more. This dark, horrific Twine-based dungeon crawler pairs edgy interactive fiction with grisly pixel art and light RPG elements. Prepare to be disturbed, titillated, and savaged by unholy denizens aplenty in your quest to navigate this sprawling narrative-driven labyrinth bristling with otherworldly doom.

WARNING: THIS GAME WILL KILL YOU. OFTEN.
Part of the intended challenge is in experimenting to see where different paths and choices lead you. It’s impossible to experience all of the content in a single runthrough. Experiment, be bold, and uncover your fate, wherever it may lead!

Features:

  • Experience a grim story-driven horror adventure
  • Solve cryptic and disturbing puzzles
  • Die in dozens of horrible ways
  • Enjoy light RPG elements, including combat and inventory
  • Discover multiple endings
  • BONUS: 40,000 word game dev diary

This game is not for the squeamish or faint of heart.

Dracula’s Forest 2015 Review

Dracula’s Forest (website)

Location: 2828 Rock Rd, Clarks Summit, PA 18411

Drac Forest Logo

Introduction

Dracula’s Forest has been providing scares for the past 32 years and boasts probably the most perfect “atmosphere” for a creepy haunted attraction set in the dense forest of Ransom, PA. The attraction’s design has a distinctively vintage feel, with a hayride that features some of the most unique, classic props, gritty animatronics, action packed scenes and a haunting soundtrack which makes for an entertaining yearly visit to this classic attraction. Dracula’s Forest’s atmosphere, the dimly lit trail, and creepy set designs set the perfect backdrop for a hayride that includes actors who are well hidden, and seem to pop out of nowhere. This year Dracula’s Forest has added a new walk-through addition “The Walk of Doom”, which has great potential as it continues to utilize the incredible outdoor environment of the attraction’s forest to generate fear.

Dracula’s Forest may be familiar for those who visit on a yearly basis but overall they feature one of the most entertaining haunted hayride attractions you can visit this year.  Dracula’s Forest also has the potential to be one of the scariest attractions in the area, it has the perfect atmosphere, fantastic, creepy sets and structural design that can provide the backdrop for the actors to terrorize guests. Perhaps the attraction can incorporate more mature nights, to complement its family friendly atmosphere to cater to haunt fans of all interests. Several haunted attractions host special nights such as “contact nights” or “black out nights”, and Dracula’s Forest can utilize a similar strategy to reach its potential at being one of the most terrifying haunted hayrides in the Northeast.

Attractions

Dracula’s Forest Haunted Hayride

The “Haunted Hayride” attraction is the centerpiece of Dracula’s Forest and one of the best hayrides you can visit in 2015. The classic set design, vintage/creepy props, lighting and fog which creates an incredible atmosphere for a haunted hayride.  The set design has an old-school feel, featuring gory props, interactive animatronics and scenes which feature some classic horror monsters, and actors who are hidden within the darkness. The set designs and props are unique to this haunted attraction and are likely from generations past. From the Crypt Keeper who sits atop his “treasure”, a disturbing “wizard”, animatronic witches, and a disturbing graveyard scene, the visuals you will see at this attraction are some of the most memorable in any haunted attraction.  The “Haunted Hayride” is action packed, there is little downtime between sets, and actors are hidden around every corner. Some actors have impressive masks, and costume designs, while others are characters dressed in hooded sweatshirts/ jeans. Dracula’s Forest can improve its attraction by enhancing the overall FX and make-up design of its actors to differentiate between each scene. Furthermore, aggressive actors who rely on jump scares/screaming can be balanced with those who “act”, and interact with guests on the hayride. Simply yelling in guests faces, does not always generate scares. A balance of jump scares, and interactive actors coupled with improved costume/makeup designs can make the hayride a more diverse experience. The setting of the hayride is the perfect backdrop for talented scare actors to interact with guests in creative ways.  The “Haunted Hayride” finale the infamous “Tunnel of Terror” has also improved (although slightly) from last year. Incorporating Michael Myers, insane clowns and chainsaws the ending was far more effective than previous years. If the actors were again allowed to turn up the level of aggression, perhaps touch or interact with guests this ending can be even scarier than it already is for more mature guests.  We were also perplexed by the missing “flying chainsaw” actor who always seemed to be a crowd favorite this year. The attraction at times seems like its holding itself back from turning up the fear, the potential is always present, and we look forward to what Dracula’s Forest has planned next year.

The Walk of Doom

The “Walk of Doom” is a new out-door haunted trail that is guided by an actor through the dark forest. The “Walk of Doom” has several interesting set designs, such as an impressive “werewolf scene”, creepy clown scene and set in which a “guest” is abducted by a maniac. The creepy walk-through the forest is an effective environment for scares, and again the vintage/gritty quality of the set designs add to the atmosphere of the haunted attraction.  The “Walk of Doom” can improve its experience by adding a few more actors along the dark trail and perhaps ditch the guide who takes guests through the trail. A self-guided trail, with small groups through the forest can be an effective and entertaining addition to this classic attraction. The ending of the “Walk of Doom” can also use some work as guests seemed to expect more at the end of the trail. Again, this a first new addition in several years to Dracula’s Forest and we hope they continue to take chances, and continue to evolve.

The Final Word

Dracula’s Forest every year provides an entertaining, old-school haunted attraction that at times seems to be holding itself back from being one of the most terrifying in the area. The gritty, vintage set pieces, set upon the dark backdrop of the evil forest is the perfect environment for a fantastic haunted attraction experience. As we mentioned last year, we also think the attraction can benefit from a more dedicated advertisement and online presence.  Enhanced marketing, and social media outreach can expose this classic attraction to a whole new generation of haunt fans who are bombarded by media provided by newer haunts. Dracula’s Forest continues to be a yearly visit, and we look forward to see if they enhance the “Walk of Doom” in future haunt seasons. A trip to Dracula’s Forest is at times an experience that is rooted in haunts of years past, and hopefully this attraction finds its own niche to compete with the ever expanding haunted attraction industry in the northeast.

Exclusive: Author Simon Monk Talks The Maker’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse

0

Back in early September we told you about Simon Monk’s The Maker’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, available October 25th from No Starch Press; and to help get you ready for the book’s release in just a few more days, we have an exclusive Q&A with Simon to share.  Read on to learn more about The Maker’s Guide and what else author Monk has up his sleeve.

Dread Central:  Your background is in hardware and electronics; you have a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science and Cybernetics and a Ph.D. in Software Engineering.  What in the world made you decide to combine that knowledge with the zombie apocalypse?

Simon Monk: I have always found the idea of post-apocalyptic survival fascinating. I’m no warrior or leader, but I would be able to do useful things with technology to make life more comfortable and keep my group safe. I feel that the engineering aspects of post-zombie-apocalypse survival have been ignored for too long!

DC:  Zombies are so popular now – but you’ve certainly taken a different approach in writing about them.  Can you describe your process of incorporating real-world technology into a fictional scenario like the zombie apocalypse?

SM: I am a big fan of “The Walking Dead,” and when thinking about projects for the book, I always try and think of how the project would work in “The Walking Dead” world and also where you would get the parts. For example, it’s pretty easy to rig a trip wire alarm with a car battery, microswitch car horn, and some wire — all things that are readily available for scavenging in a post-apocalyptic world.

DC:  Are you yourself prepared for such an event?  Do you have supplies stockpiled “just in case”?

SM: No. It’s fiction! However, I do have everything boxed up and stored — just in case.

makersguide1

DC:  What are some of your own favorite zombie tales, and how have they influenced your writing in The Maker’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse?

SM: As I mentioned before, I am a big fan of “The Walking Dead.” I also love a good zombie film. I thought World War Z was very good, although the book is even better.

DC:  Are you a fan of the horror genre?  Do you plan to return to it again for future books?

SM: I enjoy a good horror film, but I am not a hard-core fan. I prefer horror-comedy — Shaun of the Dead, Cabin in the Woods (I watched that again the other night), and Severance are my favorites. This was a really fun book to write, and although I don’t have any plans to write another horror-related book, there are still project ideas that could be useful post-apocalypse, so who knows… there could be a sequel some day.

DC:  The Maker’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse: Defend Your Base with Simple Circuits, Arduino, and Raspberry Pi will be out just in time for Halloween.  Does your family celebrate the holiday in a big way?  I imagine this year will be a memorable one!

SM: We live on the edge of a country park surrounded by woods, and this year the park is hosting an event called “Moonlight Zombies” on Halloween so I expect there to be hoards of zombies and victims roaming around the neighborhood.

DC:  Anything else you’d like to share with our readers?  What’s next for you?

SM: Although the book is themed around a zombie apocalypse, it’s equally useful for other types of apocalypse or even for people who just want to learn a bit more about technology and how you can do small-scale electricity generation and use tools like Arduino and Raspberry Pi to make projects.  Next up, it’s back to the core electronics maker community for me with Make: Action: Movement, Light, and Sound with Arduino and Raspberry Pi (Make) and new editions of Practical Electronics for Inventors (McGraw-Hill Education) and Programing Arduino (McGraw-Hill Education).

Big thanks to Simon for his time and to Anna Morrow at No Starch Press for facilitating our interview!

makersguide4

Synopsis:
In this indispensable text, expert hardware hacker and zombie anthropologist Simon Monk gives readers all they need to survive an undead uprising. The Maker’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse: Defend Your Base with Simple Circuits, Arduino, and Raspberry Pi covers everything from identifying basic zombie types to crafting essential electronics. Artwork is by Miran Lipovaca.

Take charge of the environment:

  • Monitor zombie movements with trip wires and motion sensors
  • Keep vigilant watch over the compound with surveillance cameras
  • Power anti-zombie systems with car batteries, bicycle generators, and solar power

Escape imminent danger:

  • Repurpose old disposable cameras for zombie-distracting flashbangs
  • Open doors remotely for a successful sprint home
  • Prevent disasters with fire and smoke detectors

Communicate with other survivors:

  • Hail nearby humans with Morse code
  • Pass silent messages with two-way vibration walkie-talkies
  • Scan radio stations with an automatic frequency hopper

Founder Bill Pollock, last seen barricading his office door with Commodore 64s and crates of bourbon, was unavailable for comment. However, a flash drive unearthed in the rubble of the No Starch Press office had this to say: “The Maker’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse is for any survival-minded maker who wants to learn how to utilize their surroundings, use salvaged parts, generate their own power, and develop maker and survivor skills.”

For anyone from the complete beginner to the keen hobbyist, The Maker’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse is an essential survival tool and will be available everywhere this October 25th.

Jennifer Laporte Talks Clinging to Clinger

Jennifer Laporte stars in the horror comedy Clinger (review), releasing on October 23, 2015 and we caught up with her to get the skinny on the film.

Dread Central: After watching the movie and then looking up your credits, I see you only did one short before Clinger… Have you always loved acting, and what’s the attraction for you?

Jennifer Laporte: Actually, my first film work was for a Capital One commercial that didn’t end up airing, and then I did some industrial films. But I started in theater, and I’ve just always had a love of storytelling! For me, theater and film (and especially the horror genre) can be so imaginative, and that is so what makes it fun to work on!

Clinger Clinger Clinger Clinger Clinger

Clinger

DC: I was lucky enough to meet Michael Steves on the set of the second movie he directed, West of Hell (I think it was called Cold Descent at the time) – and was so impressed by his knowledge and professionalism. I see you’re in that movie, too. Tell me about him as a director of Clinger vs. West of Hell. Any changes?

JL: Yep, Michael is the real deal. I’m lucky to have been able to work with him twice! He has a ton of knowledge about the horror genre, which is definitely important. He’s such an open collaborator, especially being one of the writers of Clinger and West of Hell. He really knows his characters but is always open to seeing what every actor will bring, which is the best of both world.

DC: You have to go through so much as Fern in Clinger… from performing some pretty silly, cringe-inducing comedy scenes to physical moments to emotional – and I’m assuming it was low budget so time was tight. What was the most challenging aspect for you, and on the flipside to that, what was the most fun?

JL: The physical aspects were always the good kind of challenge! You have to be really precise for the camera, and figuring that out on the go was exciting. And I really enjoyed the fight sequences because they were always really rewarding. Fern and Robert’s relationship was also something that we had to all get on the same page about for every scene, and to really be conscious of, and again, I found that to be the good kind of challenge for an actor.

DC: Tell us about doing some of those gore scenes. What was it like to have to catch a disembodied head, be drenched in gore, etc. Was it hard to keep from laughing during takes?

JL: The energy was always incredibly focused because blood shots need to be so exact. The tension helped with really feeling the stakes of a disembodied head falling into your hands! But I actually really enjoyed the blood stuff – it’s hard not to feel badass! Though, my shower was sticky and red for a while after Clinger was done shooting.

DC: Your co-star Vincent Martella is so funny! And you guys have real chemistry. Did Michael audition you together to make sure, or were you just cast?

JL: We were cast separately, and we met on set the first day! But we always rehearsed our scenes before, and Michael helped us with exercises to help us get into various scenes. He was a blast to work with! Always full of energy and goofy quips to keep us all laughing.

DC: Describe the perfect audience for Clinger and describe a bit of the plot, from Fern’s perspective.

JL: The young, and young at heart who want to see a fun, goofy, gory movie! Fern starts dating a guy named Robert Khlinger (bad sign already, right?), and when he becomes too clingy, she decides to break up with him on Valentine’s Day. But things go horribly wrong, and he ends up being decapitated, and coming back to haunt her to kill her so that they can be together forever. But she finds a lot of strength and battles it out against him!

DC: Lastly, what’s the scoop on West of Hell? I mean, we were there so we saw some of it and know the story… but wow, what a cast. Tell us what it was like to shoot, and what you hope will come of it? How did you grow as an actor, surrounded by all those talents?

JL: West of Hell is a western horror by Clinger Digital as well, starring Tony Todd and Michael Eklund, and it was another insanely fun project. The cast was epic to work with, and the characters were so fun to get behind and bring to life! Plus we had a massive prank war break out on set. It was awesome to see everyone’s preparation process for being on set, and you absolutely always learn by just observing someone else who has been doing this for such a long time. It’s in post right now, and I’m really excited to see the finished product!

Michael Steves directs the supernatural horror film he co-penned with Gabi Chennisi Duncombe and Bubba Fish.

Vincent Martella, Jennifer Laporte, Julia Aks, Lisa Wilcox, and Debbie Rochon star.

Synopsis:
When her possessive high school boyfriend dies in a gruesome accident, Fern Petersen’s life is thrown into turmoil. Things go from bad to worse when he returns as a love-sick ghost to kill her so they can be together for eternity.

Exclusive Interviews with the Twisted Minds Behind Manson Family Vacation – Jay Duplass and Linas Phillips

0

Sometimes I put my foot so far into my mouth during an interview, it’s a wonder I have room for any questions in there. One time, I asked an actor what it was like to wear a funny cheap wig in the movie, especially since it has nothing to do with his character, and he replied, “What? That was my real hair.” And I’ve done it again. While chatting with Linas Phillips, who plays a failed artist in the macabre new indie Manson Family Vacation (review), I mentioned the horrible paintings in the movie, and he said… “Wait. I did those!

Read on for more laughs, eye-rolls, a few interesting tidbits about the movie, and insights as to what the players attribute the enduring fascination with Charles Manson and his band of crazed killers.

Dread Central: I know you both have siblings, and you play brothers in this film… so, did that life experience actually help you in working with your director, J. Davis, who said he’s an only child.

Linas Phillips: Well, the whole process was super collaborative from the script all the way through editing. J. made it clear that he wanted us to be as much a part of it as possible so we worked on the script physically with him for a while.

Jay Duplass: We were in the room and bounced ideas off each other.

Jay Duplass, Linas Phillips

DC: After hearing the title of the film, Manson Family Vacation, people are going to think it’s a killing spree movie… which it’s not. So, what were your thoughts when you first heard J. tell you about this idea?

LP: Well, it was more of just a concept initially. I knew it was going to be about these brothers.

DC: So, Charles Manson was not a part of it?

JD: Yeah, but it was just more of the concept. I thought of a documentary feel of them going to these different places [where the Family’s murders took place] and dealing with their stuff. But I think the relationship things got more and more fleshed out as he started writing because when he pitched the outline to us, it was exciting – but he had another sub-script going on and I think it was such a personal story.

LP: It was such a personal story and it was very easy to see; these two characters were sort of like two sides of J.; it just felt like this is a story that he needs to tell. He had so much potential energy, and that’s the kind of movie that you want to be in, so it’s easy to get a hold of, but then by managing the tone of it, it is essentially like a relationship movie. It’s also a thriller, a mystery, a comedy, a road trip movie; it has a lot of stuff going on, and so that’s where we really worked hard every day from writing all the way through editing, to find that balance.

DC: Linus, your character in this movie is, shall we say… a little off. Do you believe in nature or nurture, or how much is insanity actually inherited?

LP: Yeah, I think that’s proven that genes are carried over, like if you’re a depressed person, that’s sometimes in your family, bipolar and stuff like that, so I think that Manson’s probably paranoid schizophrenic or something of that. There is this chemical imbalance somewhere so yeah, I feel like that probably affected that character.

DC: I read the book Helter Skelter when I was far too young… I’m wondering for each of you, what you’re first memory or exposure was to Charles Manson’s story?

JD: I grew up in New Orleans, a very Catholic community. We just vilified Charles Manson completely, and in our eyes he’s a crazy person, and he’s evil incarnate. A pariah. And then when you grow up, you start to realize other things… some other things reveal, in this movie for instance, Charles Manson never killed anybody. That fact is surprising because we vilify him so much and he’s got multiple life sentences. People who see something else in Manson aren’t that crazy, [and they] sort of soften that possibility; a lot of things, like he was a prominent musician when he was young, he was close to making it as a musician and if that point in his life had gone into the direction of him becoming a musician, a lot of people would probably be still alive right now.

LP: He might have thrived as a famous musician, and everything might have been okay. And there’s a definite connection there and between that and Connie, my character, because he’s a struggling artist. There’s a slight parallel there because he could just go on and keep getting involved with these fringe people, and not have as good of a life as he could, which is what his brother is worried about. It’s so hard when you worry about a sibling or family member and you just want to help them so bad and just can’t really live their life with them. I’ve dealt with it, like just seeing my dad so worried and then when people are so worried about you, they can’t even listen because in the back of their mind they’re so worried. You can’t say how depressed you are because they’re just like, “Maybe you could do this, maybe you could do that” instead of just listening to you and helping you go through the emotional side of it. I think that’s a little bit of what’s going on with the brothers.

DC: And eventually that’s what happens here in the movie, Connie’s brother starts to come around a little bit and just be supportive without judgment. What were some of the changes in the relationship from one of the early drafts that we have now?

JD: The changes were enormous, but I would say that at first it was more of a lighter movie about guys visiting murder sites, and it became more a movie about two strange brothers who were trying to find a way to find some common ground; and the backdrop of that story became the Manson murder sites. A lot [was] switched and we added a lot to the story; it’s like we added secrets from the past that started to come out, and all this work that we’ve been doing for a couple of years really came to fruition when we shot it.

DC: It might seem like a silly thing, but those little touches actually do make an impact. One of the scenes that I really liked was when Nick and his wife put up this horrible painting by Connie over the mantle, just minutes before he shows up to visit…

LP: Hey, I painted that!

DC: Oops! So little things like that, do those come about from your own life…?

LP: I’m pretty sure that was J. Davis, that idea of a painting, and that Connie should be a painter. We had trouble figuring out the actual painting, and we ended up drawing that [at the last minute], and personally it was just a coincidence but I used to paint in college.

DC: Did you really go to some of the murder sites and fringe areas to be on the actual locations for the shoot?

JD: There are a couple locations that are true like the El Coyote, but the houses were too difficult to access. People are really touchy about that stuff, and so what we did was… we tried to find houses that were in similar neighborhoods and had a similar feel. We did explore trying to get some of the locations; we got some, but we couldn’t get them all.

From writer/director J. Davis, Manson Family Vacation stars Jay Duplass, Linas Phillips, Leonora Pitts, Tobin Bell, Adam Chernick, and Davie-Blue.  It tells the story of two brothers: one who’s devoted to his family, the other who’s obsessed with the Manson Family.

Ghostly Woman Photographed in Texas Museum in The Gasp Menagerie

This one is local to me and just extremely weird.

Regular readers will know what I look for is evidence that simply has to be one of two things: real or a hoax.  I don’t like blobsquatches, mists, or other photographic or video evidence that could be any number of things.  What I seek for the Menagerie are things that either must be truly inexplicable or extremely solid hoaxes, no in-between.

This falls into that rare category.

The story, brought to us by the Dallas Observer, is this: A man was taking photos of his niece and nephews at the Fort Worth Museum, using his iPad.  Later, looking through the photos, he found the following shot:

gasp forth worth museum ghost1

He claims he doesn’t recall seeing the woman in the background.  The children seem to be oblivious.  Her appearance is not one that small children are likely to ignore.

That said, yes, it looks like a woman in a costume.  Here’s where we have to look at the entire setting: Why would that woman be dressed like that in that setting?  If it’s a hoax, as in, she was there intentionally to pose for this photo, why were none of the children paying attention to her?  If she was there for some other purpose (a Halloween party, for example), why are none of the children in costume, and why is her outfit so ghoulish and out of place for the children’s area of a museum?

Redditors lightened the photo to show more detail:

gasp fort worth museum ghost2

That’s… that’s just really weird.  The length of the forearm and the shape of the elbow and hand are all wrong.  This hearkens back to debunking Bigfoot photos: checking biometrics.  That just doesn’t look like a human arm and hand.  Certainly not a functional one.  It also appears we can see floor where the legs should be, but there’s what looks like legs curled up on the figure’s lower half with shoes dangling.  So yes, while it isn’t clear, it appears the figure is FLOATING behind one of the small shopping carts.

The original story remarks that the museum has had things going bump in the night since an exhibit on the Titanic was on display.  Is this a lost spirit?  A demonic presence?  A really weird photo of a woman in a strange costume?

Explore The Gasp Menagerie!

Have a weird story? Potential evidence of the supernatural, or at least something hard to explain? Spot any creepy critters out there roaming the wilds? LET ME KNOW! I’d love to talk about it and possibly write it up right here in the Gasp Menagerie. You’ll get appropriate credit, of course, and everyone else will get fresh creepy (as opposed to fresh Creepy, which, trust me… nobody wants that) to enjoy. As always, I can be found at mrdark@dreadcentral.com. Now get out there, find some weird, and let’s get this party started.

Live-Action Monster High Feature Film Scares Up a Director

Mattel’s Monster High line, which exploded onto the scene in 2010, is one of the coolest original toy lines to come along in many years, comprised of the teenage daughters of iconic monsters like Frankenstein, Dracula, and The Wolf Man. I’m a 29-year-old dude, but I kind of love the dolls.

As reported by Deadline, Universal Pictures is developing a live-action adaptation of the toy line, which they hope will lead to a full-blown Monster High movie franchise. Oscar-winning filmmaker Ari Sandel (The Duff) has been hired to direct the first film in the potential franchise.

Monster High is where the children of famous monsters go to school and come of age. The script was written by Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz, and the film is being produced by those two through their Fake Empire banner with Storyline’s Craig Zadan and Neil Meron.

Playground Productions is exec producing.

French filmmaker Alexandre Aja has built up a pretty impressive resume since coming onto the scene with High Tension, following that film up with standout efforts like The Hills Have Eyes (2006), Piranha 3D and Horns. Up next, he teams with Jason Blum for another horror flick. Read on!

Per The Tracking Board, Aja will direct Sleepwalker from a script by Jonathan Hirschbein, with Blum attached to produce for his dominant Blumhouse Productions label. Ian Bryce also produces via his own shingle, and Aimee LeMaire will oversee the feature film for Ian Bryce Productions.

Plot details are being kept hush at the moment, though the site’s sources let on that the project involves a sleep lab study.

We’ll of course report more on this one as we learn it.

Exclusive Interviews with More Twisted Minds Behind Manson Family Vacation – J. Davis and Tobin Bell

0
0

Hot on the heels of our interview with Jay Duplass and Linas Phillips in celebration of their upcoming film Manson Family Vacation (review), today we bring you our chat with director J. Davis and co-star Tobin Bell.  Read on for the goods, and click the above link if you missed yesterday’s talk!

DC: J., how did you come up with this idea of a family bonding film over such a horrific series of events?

J. Davis: I had an interest in the Manson Family and crimes, and my friend Jay Duplass was horrified by that, so I decided to explore that difference between us in a movie, and Jay agreed to help me produce. As I was writing, I asked him to act it, and he hadn’t acted at that time; he hadn’t done “Transparent” yet, and I had no idea if he was going to be interested in acting, but it turns out he was and he agreed to do it.

DC: I covered Bag Head when it came out, one of the first movies that he and his brother, Mark, did, so we know he’s a terrific director. What was it like directing a newbie actor, who is a director?

J: It was fantastic; he was a director, and Linas is a writer/director also. But they were very much actors, and they really worked on their characters and their back stories and brought it all. It was a basically two-hander shoot so when we had scenes between the two of them, we would get the scene in the can and do some exploring because they had a special vibe together.

DC: Having talked to you, Tobin, so many times on the Saw films and your TV shows, I know how prepared you come to each and every role you do, and how much thought you put into it. So my question is, what did you think when you first read J.’s script on how you would play this guy? Blackbird has got some layers that we have to read into as we watch the performance unfold.

Tobin Bell: My first concern was the story because you always want to be a part of a good story. I got lucky. I believed in these guys because Josh Polon, who was one of the producers, called me about this and said about these guys, “They’re first-rate. They know what they’re doing, and they can do this, so they’ll be good to work with.” So that was the first thing. Then I read the story.

J. Davis and Tobin Bell

JD: Tobin came with notes, thoughts about his own character, thoughts about the brother relationship, and was very focused on the whole, which I really appreciated.

TB: You’re only as good as the whole; it’s all about the whole, it’s like a team, it’s like a baseball team. If there’s a weak link in it, that weak link is going to expose itself at some point in the game. And so I trusted that these guys would cover all the links, that they would have all the players for all the different situations. And they did… I mean, in my view they did. When I watch this film, and I have seen it now three times, I always feel that it’s dynamic, it’s surprising, it’s entertaining, it’s amusing, and it’s heartfelt; and it leaves you thinking, which is a great thing.

DC: I remember my first exposure to the Manson murders was the book Helter Skelter; I’d like to know what your first intro to that fascinating story was, J.  Tobin, I know that you were in your 20s when the actual crimes happened so you were kind of there, seeing it on the news in real time…

JD: Yeah, mine was exposure to the book, which had this kind of blood-colored font, and there were pictures of these young beautiful people side by side with these horrific crime scenes, and it just took me aback. I wanted to know more about what had happened.

TB: The way other people lived their lives.

DC: It is a glimpse into the mind-set, from three sides – the victims, the killers, and the law.

TB: It was like… you couldn’t think that stuff up. It was so bizarre with the Sharon Tate aspect of it, the Hollywood aspect, and the commune aspect of it, and the cultural implications. It was the first time people started locking their doors at night.

JD: It sort of unfolded piece by piece; they were solving it as they went along.

TB: Well exactly. They were murdered, and then who did it? [We all saw it on the news.] And then once they found out who did it, who were these people and what were they about? You found out a little more every day, and it went on and on and on, and then there were the trials. We learned about this dedication to this figure, this guy Charlie, and then the fact that he wasn’t even there when it happened. So, it was very shocking and very scary, like a window into this other world people were living in, and who had aspirations to making some impact on society, and how far from reality people can actually get in terms of how they’re going to make an impact. And it continues to happen in 2015. People do all kinds of things and with self-aggrandizement in their minds, even if it’s somewhere lurking underneath the surface.

DC: So do you have a brother, J.? How do you make that sort of chemistry between those two guys that are so different from one another?

JD: I’m an only child; Jay has his brother, Mark, and Linas has brothers as well, so they were able to bring their brotherly relationships to the table. For me working on it, it was more the thing of two sides to my personality.

DC: Manson is kind of in zeitgeist again, what with some other movies [House of Manson], and the TV series “Aquarius”…

TB: The thing about this film is it’s not about Charlie Manson [and it’s not a period piece].

DC: It’s not, but people will think so when they see the name of it: Manson Family Vacation. Then they are in for a really interesting, more complex surprise.

JD: At the time that I developed that, I had no idea that these things would be happening concurrently.

TB: And there’s a lot in this business that’s outside your control, and that’s one of them, but hopefully you can focus on things you’d have some influence on.

JD: I guess it’s just strange that other people were interested in it at the same time.

From writer/director J. Davis, The Manson Family Vacation stars Jay Duplass, Linas Phillips, Leonora Pitts, Tobin Bell, Adam Chernick, and Davie-Blue.  It tells the story of two brothers: one who’s devoted to his family, the other who’s obsessed with the Manson Family.

FX Reveal: A Look at Vincent J. Guastini’s Work on Comedy Central’s This Is Not Happening

Rarely do we cover anything for networks like Comedy Central, but when FX maven Vincent J. Guastini gets involved with a project, we know one thing for sure… the FX work will be bloody, sick, and ridiculously cool!

Such is the case with his work on Ari Shaffir’s “This Is Not Happening.” Dig on some amazing imagery below along with a note explaining what you’re looking at from Vincent himself.

This show is a fucking blast to work on! Comedian Ari Shaffir, the show’s host and creator, and Comedy Central are going all out for these openers: stunts, explosions, and all kinds of practical effects.

For last year’s season we did two major effects for opening segments. We had to re-create a scene from THE THING which would be shot Matrix-style in bullet time. We also had to create duplicate Ari Shaffir faces on a bunch of little people who are chasing him… and for other segments as well. For The Thing segment, instead of a creature head like the one featured in the original movie, the director wanted our creature to be a giant heart… namely Ari Shaffir’s heart. So we made a giant-sized one that breaks out of his chest and hits the ceiling.

this-is-not-happening-4 this-is-not-happening-6 this-is-not-happening-3 this-is-not-happening-2 this-is-not-happening-1 this-is-not-happening-8 this-is-not-happening-7 this-is-not-happening-5

For the new season we had to create some aliens. I told director Jeff Tomsic and producer Nate Young, “Let’s go crazy and go outside the box on these aliens.” I was sick of seeing wall-eyed dome-headed shaped creatures; it was time to up the ante.

The setup for the episode is that Ari comes into contact with sort of the Queen Bee of all the aliens. She ascends from a flying saucer, and she winds up stripping naked and has sex with Ari… as they raise upward into the spaceship floating in a beam of light in a sexual embrace. Later she’ll be sucking his blood through a tube as their hybrid alien love baby is being cradled by her. Pure genius and fun.

Spookies was the first movie worked on, and in it there was this cool spider creature. I thought the alien for this project should be akin to the spider monster I created from that 80s film. I wound up working and sculpting on a stop-motion version for it back then, and also one of its final stage transformation heads when I was in my 20’s on that film, so I figured, “Let’s do an homage to the guy I worked for who designed it – make-up artist and sculptor John Dods, who started my career.”

this-is-not-happening-16 this-is-not-happening-15 this-is-not-happening-14 this-is-not-happening-13 this-is-not-happening-12 this-is-not-happening-11 this-is-not-happening-10 this-is-not-happening-9

The aliens in this segment are a love letter to him and that film. The designs are so off the wall I felt it would be perfect for this spot with Ari and director Jeff Tomsic, whom I worked with on the first season. They let us fly and I basically could do whatever I wanted.

I had a great crew on these seasons. Key artists and sculptors Josh Wasylink and Jeff Farley, who killed it on the aliens, really got into it. And I had some amazing back-up too with some on-set application help from the amazing Mike Smithson, who helped me on set for the alien segment. Also kudos to Jon Cody Fasano for being an amazing on-set person, as well as the rest of the team who rounded out this crazy job. They are Cody J. Wilkins, Carlos Vasquez, Tommy Cassidy, and designer Josh Crockett.

Haunted Scarehouse 2015 Review

Haunted Scarehouse (website)
Location: 105 W Dewey Ave, Wharton, NJ 07885

Logo

Introduction

Haunted Scarehouse, in Wharton, NJ is one of the most technologically advanced, detailed and genuinely scary indoor haunted walk-through attractions in the tristate area. Haunted Scarehouse, features two connected indoor attractions; the “House of Nightmares”, “The Attic” and a fantastic pre-show which takes guests “back in time” through a time machine, boasts some of the most detailed set designs, interactive rooms and corridors which take the haunted attraction experience to a new level, by incorporating technological advancements that are not seen in other haunted attractions. The intricate details and fantastic set designs are experienced in small groups, and the Haunted Scarehouse, does not disappoint. Guests will travel through time to visit the infamous “Hayden” family homestead. A house of horrific slaughter, twisted imagery, and insanity set upon two floors of fear.

This year the Haunted Scarehouse, has added an additional side attraction “Trapped: Escape Games” which challenge guests to complete puzzles to escape various rooms set in the “Hayden” farmhouse. These challenges are separate from the main haunted attraction and cater to those who like to use teamwork to solve complex problems to escape the various rooms. We found the “Trapped: Escape Games” experience to be slightly underwhelming compared to the incredible actual attraction but can see individuals enjoying such challenges. Escape Room additions are slowly becoming additions to haunted attractions and we expect the designers of this attraction to enhance these experiences over future haunt seasons. The Haunted Scarehouse, continues to improve each year, adding new surprises, scares and interactive thematic sets which allow the talented actors to scare.

Attractions

Haunted Scarehouse, places an emphasis on the “legend” behind the attraction’s creation. The legend of the “Hayden” family places guests back in time to an era in which a farmhouse stood on the grounds of the attraction. One of the most impressive additions to the attraction this year is the addition of a technologically impressive pre-show, which helps reduce the wait time before entering the actual attraction and is a “time machine” which takes guest back in time to the era of the “Hayden Farm”. This pre-show is difficult to describe as it is unique to the Haunted Scarehouse. The use of video, impressive special effects and an entertaining mad scientist help guests learn the grizzly history of this family and builds anticipation to the main attractions. The quality of this pre show alone tops most haunted attractions and helps guests forget they are in a large industrial building.

Haunted Scarehouse, is an indoor walk-through haunt which is composed of two different attractions, a downstairs attraction known as “House of Nightmares” and upstairs attraction “The Attic”. Both attractions are connected, diverse in design, and feature incredible themes. Groups enter each attraction in small groups, and the length of each attraction, as well as the interactive elements of the designs does a good a job at separating each group from the others.

The design of the attraction is best described as relentless, the actors are insane, they brutalize guests, and themselves at times to create an engaging haunted attraction experience. Each room is perfectly designed to create anticipation, and build fear. Doors violently slam open, life-like animatronics from flying demons to a Hollywood quality “werewolf” are found along every corner of this fantastic attraction. The talented scare actors and engaging set designs continue to stay ahead of the curve in adding a modern twist to a classical, traditional walk-through haunted attraction. Haunted Scarehouse, builds fear and anticipation throughout each scene, it is a terrifying, and immersive experience that should be on your list to visit this year!

House of Nightmares

The first floor attraction, “House of Nightmares”, features detailed props and large-scale animatronics which serve as a backdrop for talented scare actors hidden throughout each corridor. The animatronics and set designs are of the highest quality, and balance perfectly with actors who are always well hidden and ready to scare. From to a dragon like creature that “eats” unlucky guests, the quality of the props/animatronics must be seen to appreciate. Each set is gruesome and gritty, this is a mature themed attraction, and encourages guests to cautiously explore the “House of Nightmares”.

The insane actors of the “House of Nightmares” effectively use the detailed set designs and animatronics to hide in tight spaces, use different types of scaring techniques to generate scares and create unique interactions with guests. interactive nature of the attraction makes it difficult to predict what will happen next, and the attraction uses darkness and ominous sound effects to build anticipation. Walls will collapse, floors rumble and slide and animatronics grasp at guests as the “House of Nightmares” is continuous non-stop relentless action, capped off by a jump scare finale which sets the perfect tone for a trip to the “Attic”.

The Attic

After an always shocking ending to the “House of Nightmares” we made our way to the second floor of the Haunted Scarehouse, the “Attic” is the strongest, and creepiest of the two incredible walk-through attractions which make up the infamous Haunted Scarehouse. The “Attic” forces guests to enter into its detailed, intense scenes in small groups. Each scene is interactive, each corridor features effective use of misdirection, confusing mazes and actors who are dedicated to confusing guests, as well as scaring them. Guests enter a twisted carnival, and must escape a maze which is controlled by various evil clowns. A trip through a disturbing doll room, haunted library, rooms with chainsaws coming out of multiple directions and a room of rather life-like “wax” figures are some of the scenes guests will see as they enter into the sinister “Attic”.  Each scene is unique from the other, and the atmosphere of this attraction is far more intimate than the “House of Nightmares” as at times we felt we were truly alone in this disturbing haunted environment. The actors of the “Attic” also are slightly darker in their approach in interactions with guests. One mad doctor appeared to “extract” the tooth of a helpless victim, and clowns taunt as guests attempt to escape the carnival mini-maze. The unsettling, highly detailed set designs and intense actors made us feel uncomfortable, built a sense of paranoia and again anticipation as we cautiously moved from scene to scene. The Haunted Scarehouse does an incredible job of preventing guests from backing up or walking into each other, which adds to the personal experience of this attraction. Adult, mature themes permeate through each room of the “Attic. You may be encouraged to follow Satan, be taunted by demented clowns and aggressively approached by a twisted girl who just wants you to play with her dolls. The finale to the “Attic” is not as strong as the “House of Nightmares” but still provides an effective jump scare that leaves guests wanting more.

The Final Word

Haunted Scarehouse, continues to improve every year and is by far one of the best indoor walk-through attractions you can visit this year. The amazing, Hollywood quality detail coupled with a continuous buildup of fear is at times exhausting and this attraction never lets up. The relentless actors, the shockingly interactive rooms and dark atmosphere make this one of the best haunted attractions you can visit this year. Their approach to incorporating technology, from the incredible pre-show to the various life-like animatronics is not scene in many haunts, thus we give the Haunted Scarehouse again one of our highest recommendations to attend this year. The attraction is within driving distance of the also incredible Brighton Asylum attraction and we suggest you try to visit both in one night, as both complement each other perfectly. You will be constantly entertained, scared and anticipating what is next as you visit the “Hayden” family at the Haunted Scarehouse!

ABC Officially Cancels The Whispers

0
0

By the time it wrapped up its first season, ABC’s “The Whispers” had lost a lot of steam – and a large chunk of its viewing audience – so it’s no surprise really that the network has officially cancelled the show as of today, especially considering, as Deadline explains, it’s been four months since the options on the cast expired.

The series premiered with a 1.5 Live+Same Day rating among adults 18-49 and 5.7 million viewers in the Monday 10 PM hour to become the network’s highest-rated summer scripted premiere since “Rookie Blue” in 2010, but that wasn’t enough as ratings for the show eroded throughout its run.

Had it been renewed, “The Whispers” producers had a plan for Season 2 that included expanding the scope of the implications caused by the events in the first season, which would have basically called for a new cast anyway.

“The Whispers” Season 1 starred Lily Rabe, Barry Sloane, Milo Ventimiglia, Derek Webster, Kristen Connolly, Kylie Rogers, and Kyle Harrison Breitkop. It was executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank, and Zack Estrin. The pilot was written and co-executive produced by Soo Hugh, who also developed the series. “The Whispers” was produced by ABC Studios, with Amblin TV as co-producer.

Synopsis:
We love to play games with our children. But what happens when someone else starts to play with them, too? Someone we don’t know. Can’t see. Can’t hear. In “The Whispers,” someone or something – is manipulating the ones we love most to commit the unthinkable. In the country’s center of political power, Washington D.C., several kids have been talking about their imaginary friend, Drill. What the parents don’t know is that this friend is not as imaginary as they think. And when the mysterious games Drill convinces them to play turn dangerous, FBI child specialist Claire Bennigan is called in to investigate. What is it that Drill wants, and why does he – or it – only communicate with children? As the clock counts down, a suspenseful race will begin to save not only their families, but the world. Before it’s too late.

Mysterious and Frightening Video Making Way Around the Internet! Watch Here!

To be very honest with you guys we have absolutely no idea what the following video is but we can tell you one thing for sure… it’s one of the most unnerving things we’ve ever seen.

Apparently it all started last week when Swedish tech site GadgetZZ.com reported receiving a DVD, labeled with a random assortment of ones and zeros, and containing the following thoroughly strange video. Once the site went public with their findings a YouTube subscriber by the name of AETBX came to light claiming that he had already uploaded the same video after receiving it from his friend in Spain who told him she found the identically labeled DVD in a park. AETBX has since gone on to deny that he’s the video’s creator.

The ones and zeros were quickly identified as binary which, when decoded, spells “Muerte”, Spanish for “Death.” the film’s title includes the phrase: “Te queda 1 año menos,” which translates to “You have one year left—or less.”

Intuitive Reddit and You Tube subscribers have assembled an intriguing list of clues and observations aimed at deciphering whatever message Muerte aims to convey. The video contains flashes identified as Morse code, along with very specific coordinates: 38.897709, -77.036543. The code translates to: “RED LIPSLIKE TENTH” (perhaps an anagram for “KILL THE PRESIDENT”); the building located at the coordinates: The White House.

That being said, we live in the time of the Internet and it wasn’t long before the video began being picked apart. A spectrogram analysis of the soundtrack revealed hidden text, including the phrase “You’re already dead.”

An imgur user by the name of M4nic has also created a gallery of hidden images contained within the video. What does this all mean? You tell us! The video is below. We recommend lowering your volume before clicking “Play.”

Thanks to our buddies over at The Blood Shed for bringing this one to our attention.
