Malek Akkad Talks Upcoming Halloween Film; Not What We’re Expecting

Last we heard, Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton were penning brand new franchise sequel Halloween Returns, which was reportedly going to pick up some time after the events of 1981’s Halloween 2. Dunstan was tapped to direct, but it sounds like those plans may have changed. Read on for the latest.

Speaking with Daily Dead, producer Malek Akkad seemed to indicate that Dunstan and Melton are off the project, though it’s hard to tell if that’s what he was trying to convey. What we do know, for certain, is that original plans for the sequel have changed, and the film will no longer be the one we were expecting.

We had been working with a bunch of writers where we got close, but then we brought in Marcus and Patrick and worked closely with them. We found that we all were very much on the same level of what we wanted to do, in spite of the fact that the studio wasn’t necessarily in agreement,” Akkad revealed. “I just felt like I really had partners who would also fight the good fight and fight for the ideas, and fight for the things that we wanted to make sure we got right. And I just think they’re fantastic and super-talented.”

Although, I have to say, and this is somewhat new news—but unfortunately things happen in Hollywood where you have issues with studios and different variables—we’ve had to take a step back and now we’re trying to refigure this beast that is the new Halloween. So there is a bit of a delay with this sequel now.”

But I do think it is a good thing for the franchise,” Akkad continued. “It’s only going to be resulting in a better film, which I hope the fans appreciate. But this new Halloween isn’t going to be quite what has been announced and what people are expecting, so we’re making some changes there as well.”

Here’s the original plot rundown for Halloween Returns, which may have significantly changed…

The film will pit a new group of Haddonfield youngsters against Myers. The now 18-year-old child of one of Myers’ victims plays a central role along with the child of a cop who’s long been obsessed with Myers’ case, even putting it before his own daughter.

Myers is now on Death Row, and the two kids with their own personal vendettas against the killer sneak in to watch his execution. But when things go awry and Myers escapes, the pair, along with their friends, find themselves in the firing line.

To get you geared up for tonight’s release of Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, we are running a weekly blog from Christopher Chacon – a world-renowned Anomalist, Parapsychologist, and one of the world’s foremost authorities on the scientific exploration of paranormal, supernatural, and anomalous phenomena as well as the occult/metaphysics and mysticism. Welcome to the final week.

Chacon deals with things that most of us would run screaming from on a daily basis. This blog will reflect his weekly dealings and cases. Enjoy, and you may want to turn on your nightlight!

My clients (cases) last weekend consisted of; a reported spontaneous disappearance (dematerialization), an alleged case of a dream-state being telepathically transmitted, a reported case of a marionette puppet that comes to life/attacks, an alleged close encounter of the fourth and/or fifth kinds (alien abduction/communication) and reported poltergeist phenomena taking place at two separate locations that are somehow synchronized.

Christopher Chacon

Before dealing with any of these clients (and locations if applicable), assessments were performed on each client/location (psychological, physiological, environmental and circumstantial) in an attempt to rule-out conventional explanations. Confidentiality and security requests were implemented, including the securing of any locations.

A family of seven were watching a movie at home, when suddenly the mother and father stood-up, seemingly reacting to something unseen. Unable to speak they reached-out to each other as they “dissolved-away” in front of their five horrified children leaving no physical trace. Law enforcement and a psychiatric professional thoroughly investigated the circumstances surrounding these events, referring the case. When interviewing the children, significant traumatic shock was displayed. The children each described the ‘disappearance’ as completely silent and appeared as if their parents were “made of Alka-Seltzer tablets” as they rapidly “dissolved”. In addition to the children and referring parties, I also spoke with other family-members, as well as neighbors, friends and work associates. Unable to obtain additional information/evidence, I theorized a wide variety of possibilities that might explain the phenomenon. A variety of methods (traditional and unconventional) are being implemented in an attempt to locate the parents. In the meantime, the children were placed into the care of grandparents and the mother and father were placed on a missing person’s list.

Anyone (family, friends, etc.) that happens to be in an undetermined proximity of a five-year-old child while he is dreaming will reportedly lose all cognitive awareness and become fully immersed into the dream-state of the child. The experience overrides/perceptually-blinds one’s own senses, replacing them with the dream being experienced by child while still remaining fully conscious. If multiple individuals (family, friends, etc.) are within proximity, all will be simultaneously immersed, sharing in the same dream-state experience. Each immersive event lasts anywhere from 1 to 15 minutes and on multiple occasions has resulted in injuries by those who experience it due to the lack of actual physical awareness. The trauma and uncertainty surrounding this phenomenon has resulted in severe anxiety from all family members, especially by the young boy himself who feels guilty for the amount of stress and fears being produced. Several measures are being taken in an attempt to rectify the situation.

A variety of unexplained events (moved and broken objects/furniture, unidentifiable markings, etc.) coincided the recent acquisition of a turn-of-the-century marionette puppet. After a couple weeks of this, the puppet then began to be mysteriously found in different positions and in different locations within the house, each time the strings having been unattached. Circumstances quickly escalated from being woken in the middle-of-the-night with the puppet sitting nearby, to family members claiming to have been physically assaulted by the puppet, sending multiple members of the family to the hospital. Apparent threats made by the puppet to family members influenced them not to attempt anything to stop or remove it from their home. These threats were emphasized in several reported attacks to family members by the puppet, including awaking one evening with the puppet’s hand/arm being forced down the throat of the father. When a religious leader and law-enforcement representative also encountered the phenomenon, admitting that something “evil and insidious was at work”, they requested my assistance. After assessing the puppet and interviewing everyone connected to the claimed supernatural phenomena, the puppet was removed from the residence and measures were taken to further protect the family.

A young girl that walks to school everyday was reported missing having never arrived to school one day. Seven days later, she was found wandering through a large field where she previously lived, some 300 miles away from her present home, with no memory of the past week. She recalls seven days earlier, walking to school and being puzzled as she squinted at the “sun”, moving swiftly low in the horizon until it was just over her head. Just when she realized that the real sun was actually rising to her left, her memory lapses and only recalls suddenly walking through the field. In examining both locations (last known location before disappearance and location where she was found), vegetation and soil showed significant traces of ionizing radiation specifically covering an area in both locations in the shape of a massive circular impression (approximate diameter of 150 feet), with three smaller circular impressions burned nearby (each approximate diameter of 3 feet).

Even when utilizing regressive hypnosis coupled with a polygraph machine, the girl has no recollection of the seven days she went missing. Additionally, when the acting doctor performed a complete physical on her due to her questionable disappearance, the doctor was taken aback as she no longer displayed any symptoms of past health conditions and three body scars could no longer be found. The girl/family were advised of a variety of suggestions that might help them cope with the situation. It was highly recommended for the girl/family to seek therapy to better deal with these events.

Two separate locations (a residence and a small store), almost 600 miles apart, with no known connection to each other, are both reportedly exhibiting concurrent poltergeist activity (manifesting at the same times). The reported phenomenon begins with sudden extreme temperature variations that last for about an hour, coupled with loud structural settling, which then transitions into extreme electrostatic emissions for another hour. As the emissions decline, the sound of garbled echoing voices can be heard, coupled by the rapid movement of shadows, both with no apparent source. This then transitions into physical/kinetic manifestations that move furniture/objects in each location, including direct contact with anyone who might be present. This phenomenon is identical in both locations; manifesting, transitioning, excelling and stopping in the same manner in a synchronized fashion.

In each case, a multitude of theoretical explanations and possibilities covering a wide spectrum (from theoretical physics to parapsychological to metaphysical/occult-related) were pursued to determine the true nature of each phenomenon.

The individuals/groups I communicated with this week that are reportedly experiencing or had experienced paranormal, supernatural or anomalous phenomena, includes:

  • Consulting on a variety of phenomena in connection to a large swath of ancient fabric. In addition to what is manifesting in proximity of the fabric, touching it allegedly affects the person in a variety of extreme ways.
  • Consultation surrounding the circumstances of three bodies found completely drained of all bodily fluids with no visible sign of method for fluid extraction. This is in connection to an ongoing international investigation involving other victims found around the world.
  • Consultation on several siblings reportedly telepathically linked to one another and able to communicate entirely via thought.
  • Consultation with a young woman that reportedly experiences a spontaneous trance-state (walk-in or possession) with an unknown consciousness communicating supposedly precognitive visions (prophecies).

Among the clients I’m dealing with this coming weekend include:

  • A reported possession case (with two unsuccessful exorcisms already attempted) with multiple-possession characteristics (possible migrating possession case). The situation is connected to several alleged reanimated corpses.
  • Blinding UFO’s are reportedly observed entering and exiting a specific location of ocean with high frequency.
  • An extremely rare collection of artifacts recently discovered at an ancient site, reportedly appear to animate and move, additionally producing unexplainable visions upon handling.

A quick casting change has come in via THR, who reports that young British star Asa Butterfield (Hugo, Ender’s Game) has replaced Kodi Smit-McPhee in Croak, the first live-action feature from Oscar-nominated ParaNorman director Sam Fell.

Smit-McPhee had been attached to star alongside “The X Files” and “Hannibal’s” Gillian Anderson in Croak, which was introduced to buyers in Cannes by London-based Cornerstone Films, playing a young grim reaper living between the land of the living and oblivion.

Butterfield, who was also recently among the names floated as candidates to play Spider-Man, joins the comedy together with Stanley Tucci and What We Do in the Shadow‘s Jemaine Clement.

Cornerstone, established earlier in the year by Alison Thompson and Mark Gooder, is set to take the project to AFM next month. More soon!

If there’s one person whom we love to keep a close eye on around here, it’s Final Destination writer Jeffrey Reddick, who has proven over the years to be wonderfully demented. So we’re pretty stocked to tell you about his newest project, Car 86.

Bloody Disgusting is reporting that Picket Fence Entertainment, Rising Tide Entertainment, and Pentatonic Productions’ Car 86 will begin principal photography October 29th in Indianapolis, Indiana, with director Louis Benjamin Del Guercio at the helm and Final Destination writer Jeffrey Reddick as executive producer.

Reese Mishler (pictured; The Gallows) joins Paul Woolfolk (Joyful Noise) and newcomer Sarah Davenport in the sci-fi thriller written by Greg Ballard.

This script is a rare mix of strong characters, sci-fi, horror, and suspense; and when I read it, I had to come on and help make it happen,” said Reddick. “We assembled an amazing team in front of, and behind, the camera. I really believe in the director, who has such a clear and unique vision. I’m thrilled to see this story come to life and be a part of Ben’s feature directorial debut.

Greg Ballard and Justin Kornmann will produce the film along with R. Andru. Executive producers Brian Kirchoff and Travis Berens complete the producing team.

Synopsis:
Car 86 centers on three recent college graduates, Steve, Jeremy, and Emma, who drifted apart after high school but reunite to go on a ride-along with a cocky police officer. But what should be a routine traffic stop takes a shockingly violent turn, and the reunited trio unearth a secret that could doom mankind forever.

Exclusive Attack on Titan Part 2 Clip Is Gore-Soaked!

A few weeks ago we brought you a truly insane clip from the feature film version of Attack on Titan (review). Today we’re back with more madness – an exclusive clip from Attack on Titan Part 2! Dig it!

Attack on Titan Release Details:
FUNimation Entertainment announces the new unrated manga adaptation feature film ATTACK ON TITAN for a limited theatrical release, screening in nearly 300 theaters across the United States and Canada. In the U.S., Part 1 plays in theaters on September 30, October 1, and October 7, with Part 2 opening two weeks later on October 20, 22, and 27. In Canada, Part 1 will play in theaters on October 5 and 26, followed by Part 2 on October 22 and October 26. Tickets for all ATTACK ON TITAN playdates are now available for purchase via the movie’s official website, AttackOnTitanTheMovie.com.

“The day ATTACK ON TITAN fans across North America have been waiting for has finally arrived. This is a limited theatrical release so I encourage fans to find their nearest theater and purchase tickets to both movies now,“ said Gen Fukunaga, CEO and founder of FUNimation. “A movie as colossal as ATTACK ON TITAN truly takes two parts to tell. Fans do not want to miss this opportunity.”

Produced by Japan’s legendary Toho Company (home of Godzilla, Mothra, etc.), the unrated ATTACK ON TITAN live-action adaptation, based on the popular graphic manga series of the same name (“Shingeki no Kyojin” in Japanese), tells the dark story of a violent world where most of humanity has been destroyed by terrifying brutal giants. The last of mankind now fights to survive behind three concentric walls – walls that were once impenetrable to the horrific giants. With more than 50 million copies in print today, ATTACK ON TITAN has also inspired four spin-off manga, as well as a 25-episode anime series which FUNimation both simulcast and released on home video in North America.

“We wanted to make sure that we could bring ATTACK ON TITAN to as many fans as possible, and we’ve put together a great network of theatrical partners to do just that,“ said Mike DuBoise, COO of FUNimation. “That said, we know ATTACK ON TITAN will draw people new to anime, as well as fans of horror and sci-fi. As we’ve seen from the tremendous response at festival screenings, this movie does not disappoint.”

Horror, sci-fi, and fantasy fans have eagerly been waiting to see ATTACK ON TITAN on the big screen, following its standing-room-only World Premiere in Los Angeles on July 14 and its two quickly sold-out screenings this summer at Montreal’s premier Fantasia Film Festival. Genre buffs and film critics have been screaming praise for ATTACK ON TITAN, with horroronscreen.com declaring, “ATTACK ON TITAN is the most impressive giant monster movie to come out in years,” and Brutal Beta raving, “When the Titans show up, it’s downright scary. Totally horrifying. I was crawling out of my skin.”

Directed by Shinji Higuchi (currently wrapping Toho’s new Godzilla film), ATTACK ON TITAN combines an epic, futuristic story with gruesome visuals to depict a frightening tale of a deadly domination of mankind, causing leading horror website Dread Central to exalt ATTACK ON TITAN as “an amazing, balls-to-the wall adventure of shock, awe, terror and human resilience. A masterpiece of mega monster movies.”

The official movie website features an easy-to-use theater locator. Tickets are limited so act quickly! Also be sure to “like” FUNimation on Facebook, and follow the company on Twitter (@funimation).

Albert Wesker and Former WWE Diva to Beat Off the Undead for The Asylum

A new zombie flick is on its way from The Asylum featuring one of our favorite video game voice actors, D.C. Douglas, along with a former WWE Diva and a horde of the undead. Read on for details.

From the Press Release:
The production company behind the hit Syfy show “Z Nation” and the mega-hit franchise Sharknado has started principal photography on an action zombie film tentatively titled XP-573.

The script, written by Brandon Trenz and Jacob Cooney, involves an elite military unit investigating a remote military compound that went dark ten years earlier after a top secret biological weapons program went haywire. Leading the unit is Lt. Gibson, played by Joey Lawrence. Assisting the team is a CIA virologist, Mikaela Usylvich, played by former WWE Diva Maryse Mizanin. Within hours of their arrival they discover a survivor, Col. Aiden Wexler, played by D.C. Douglas.

Douglas had approached The Asylum with the idea of doing a zombie film that paid homage to the Resident Evil video game fan base, as detailed in his blog post:

“About two years ago I asked my fans on social media if they’d be interested in my doing a zombie film with The Asylum — A film that would include many nods to the video game series ‘Resident Evil’ and the character that brought me so many fans to begin with – Albert Wesker,” writes Douglas. “So, it’s finally happening.”

Douglas has been the voice of Resident Evil bad guy Albert Wesker since 2007.

This is the second time Maryse Mizanin has worked with The Asylum, having appeared in Sharknado 3. This is Douglas’ eighth, with the most recent outings being Sharknado 2 and last week’s appearance on Syfy’s “Z Nation” as Pa Kettle.

XP-573 is slated for a mid-2016 release.

Considering how many people are obsessed with their smartphones and gadgets these days, it’s surprising that these individuals haven’t found themselves the target of a sadistic killer in a bloody horror movie. If you’d love nothing more than to see tech obsessives eviscerated for your endless amusement, prepare yourself for DistractDead. We apologize in advance to smartphone addicts.

The premise is pretty straightforward: People who spend more time staring at their devices instead of participating in real life are targeted by someone who is more than willing to end their lives. In fact, the official website has a manifesto written by the flick’s agenda-driver killer.

Is your life in danger? Check it out:

With the birth of the internet came the promise of a united humanity, a world that after millennia of strife could finally stand as one.

But as time passes, it is clear that the false lure of “connectivity” drives a wedge between us. Now they pass one another in real life and don’t even see their humanity anymore. All they see is the glowing screen in our hands – a filter for life, a false protection from actually feeling anything anymore.

This addiction has grown to epidemic proportions, and it threatens our safety as a society. Distracted driving kills. Distracted walking creates legions of victims – a society of the weak.

THE DISTRACTDEAD AS THEY WILL BE KNOWN.

For now it is time to remind them that their senses evolved for a purpose: self-preservation. And though they have long forgotten what it is like to observe the world around them, they will rediscover one emotion clearer than ever before: fear.

Hide your phones, addicts: DistractDead is on its way. Have a look at the trailer below. As always, check out the flick on Facebook, but try not to get too distracted in the process.

Shining Hotel Planning World’s First Horror Museum

The Stanley Hotel, also known as the insanely creepy inspiration for the Overlook Hotel in Stephen King’s The Shining, is looking for a huge wad of cash to create what could be the world’s very first horror museum. In addition to creating a wonderful tribute to the genre, the hotel is also looking to create a film studio and a film archive. The estimated price tag: $24 million. Chump change!

According to io9, the Stanley Hotel will get a cool $11.5 million from the State of Colorado’s Regional Tourism Act. In order to generate the rest of the cash, the museum will need a few investors with some very deep pockets. So if you’re a horror obsessive with a lot of money to throw around, consider giving them a call. I’m sure they’ll be more than happy to accept a check.

The museum itself is described as follows:

Multiple indoor and outdoor entertainment venues, including a 500-seat auditorium; a 30,000-square-foot interactive museum and discovery center that would feature rotating exhibits; a 3,000 square-foot soundstage; classrooms and workshop spaces; and post-production and editing suites.

Variety reports that the Stanley Film Center counts horror veterans Simon Pegg and Elijah Woods as founding board members, so it’s safe to say that the project is in good hands. Although the Stanley Hotel is also known for its ghost tours and the Stanley Film Festival, the folks behind the horror museum are hoping to make it a destination for genre lovers all year long.

To say that I’m excited about a horror museum is a hell of an understatement. As Jack Torrance would say, “There’s nothing I look forward to with greater pleasure, Mr. Grady.

There is certainly no shortage of Christmas-themed horror movies these days. However, director Stuart W. Bedford’s Good Tidings is looking to inject a little exploitation into the holiday-oriented carnage. Instead of exploring a deranged Santa Claus or the monstrous Krampus, Bedford and company are pitting a homeless guy against three deranged psychopaths.

This synopsis puts a slightly finer point on it:

A creepy, horrific Christmas exploitation tale. A homeless war veteran with a chequered past must rely on a side of himself once thought buried when he and his companions are targeted on Christmas Day by three vicious psychopaths in Santa suits.

If you want to keep up with everything surrounding Good Tidings, you have a lot of options at your fingertips. Follow the flick on Twitter and Facebook, or check out the official website. Meanwhile, the teaser trailer for this holiday-themed exploitation movie is embedded below. Enjoy!

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse and Unorthodox Zombie Occurrences

The zombie sub-genre of horror has seen every possible evolution that could be imagined. That is, until Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse is unleashed into theaters on October 30. Now we’ve got a whole new twist on the zombie universe. To celebrate, we’ve conjured up some of our favorite unconventional zombies throughout the years.

Scouts Guide to the Zombie apocalypse

Fido – Fido
Oh, what a concept. So let’s say the zombie apocalypse finally breaks out as we all know it will sooner or later. But instead of letting cities crumble like Atlanta in “The Walking Dead,” why can’t we get in front of this thing and use it to our advantage? And that’s exactly the concept we see in Fido.

There’s really nothing outwardly unique about Fido as a zombie. He’s a flesh-eating undead walker, but thanks to the smarts of humanity, he’s been corralled by a collar that controls his less desirable traits and makes him downright handy to the family that owns him, as is the case with many of the zombies that survived the “Zombie Wars” that occurred before the film started. The only problem is if that damn collar happens to break down or slip off.

And, of course, that damn controlling collar does happen to go haywire, and off Fido goes onto a flesh-devouring killing spree. But what else would you expect a zombie to do? When we start domesticating the undead and having them do our laundry and wash our cars, there can only be bad things coming in the future. But we must say, Fido is a landmark monster. Never before have we seen the undead put to such fantastic good use.

Pet Sematary – Winston Churchill
Although Stephen King never calls the things that come back after being buried in the Micmac Burial Ground zombies, they are indeed some form of that. Easily one of the most underrated and least spoken of Stephen King books and movies, Pet Sematary is an absolute nightmare, and it all started with Winston Churchill.

Not the world leader Winston Churchill, of course, but a scary grey cat that carried his name. Of course the Creed family called him “Church” for short, and this ferocious feline was nothing if not another worldly, undead terror. Church was the first thing that Louis Creed buried in the unholy ground shown to him by Jud Crandall, but it wasn’t the last. As all fans of the film know, Louis kinda went overboard burying dead family members up there, and that’s even after Jud told him about how Timmy Baterman came back all jammed up.

Scout’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse will undoubtedly bring us more new and memorable zombies to talk about. In fact, the film has its own herd of zombie cats to deal with. If you think Church was bad, imagine a group of them, with nothing but bad news on the mind. Check out the clip below to see the zombie cats on the prowl in Scout’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse.

Return of the Living Dead – Split Dog
Return of the Living Dead is an iconic zombie film. No, it’s not the serious, thought-provoking masterpiece that George A. Romero gave us with Night of the Living Dead, but Return of the Living Dead is so strong for so many reasons. It’s hilarious, it’s over-the-top, and it’s the film that originally kicked off the idea that zombies eat brains. Up to that point, zombies were pure flesh-eaters, not distinguishing between brains and the rest of the body; but when Tarman arose and uttered his unforgettable line, “More brains,” the horror community was hooked!

But within the insanity that is Return of the Living Dead, we see some great alternative zombie action. In addition to all the madness that breaks out, we see some really unique zombies. One of the main highlights is the little person zombie that appears just after the undead call for more paramedics, but the most outrageous has to be the zombie half-dog.

Viewers will undoubtedly remember the scene at the Uneeda Medical Supply warehouse that featured many some of the supply company products coming to life, the most memorable of which was an undead half-dog that had been bisected for medical research reasons. Once reanimated, the dog moved and yipped and made for a most memorable prop. One of the most unique and unorthodox zombies ever created.

Day of the Dead – Bub
A more humanistic zombie you’ll never find! Bub, played by Howard Sherman in the original Day of the Dead, is a memorable zombie for the ages. He is unique as no zombie has been before or since. He uses the phone (kind of), salutes, and even remembers how to fire a gun when the shit hits the fan at the end of Day of the Dead.

Yes, the split dog in Return of the Living Dead was awesome, but Bub is on another level. He’s the first hero zombie we’ve ever seen, and I can’t think of another one since. Bub should have worn a cape with a big letter “B” on his chest because he was indeed one of the good guys once he was able to shake off a little of that undead haze.

Day of the Dead was a landmark for zombie films because of how it raised the bar on so many levels. The special effects were absolutely stunning and perhaps unmatched to this day as far as practical work goes. And one unforgettable zombie named Bub helped to entrench the film in our hearts.

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse is in theaters October 30th. To create your own badges, watch exclusive video, and get tickets, head to ScoutsAndZombiesMovie.com.
