Exclusive: Filming Begins on Silent Night; Director Steven C. Miller Speaks!

$

Steven C. Miller, Silent NightWith principal photography having just kicked off on Silent Night, Steven C. Miller’s Silent Night, Deadly Night remake, in Winnipeg, the director phoned us from the set to chat about his killer Santa flick.

“This one’s going to be dark,” said Miller (pictured right) of his approach to the remake of Charles E. Sellier, Jr.’s controversial 1984 slasher film, which revolved around an unhinged teenager who embarks on an axe murder spree while dressed as Saint Nick. “I love the original movie, and I love the mean spirit of it. I felt like it took itself pretty seriously, and while there is (going to be) some dark humor in this one, we are handling it ‘straight’ and it’s definitely a horror film and it’s definitely a ‘Santa with an Axe’ film. It’s going to be really crazy, and really gory, and at the same time have some really great characters at its heart.”

Of those characters, the remake has attracted the talents of notable actors Malcolm McDowell, Jaime King (Sin City), Jamie Kennedy (Scream), Brendan Fehr (Final Destination), Lisa Marie (Sleepy Hollow), Donal Logue (Shark Night 3D) and Ellen Wong. King is set to play Deputy Sheriff Aubrey Bradimore, who battles the killer Santa terrorizing her small Midwestern town.

“Jaime is a good friend of the producers,” said Miller of the casting, “and she read the script and really enjoyed it, and it also helped that we had Malcolm McDowell attached. Malcolm is just a great guy. I got to sit down with him for breakfast, and we just really hit it off and both felt like this could be a really fun remake.”

“With Jamie Kennedy, he’s a good friend of mine,” continued Miller, whose other directorial genre credits include the features Automaton Transfusion and the upcoming The Aggression Scale and Under the Bed. “So we just tried to reach out to the people that I felt could make some really great moments in the movie and elevate it beyond what we are typically seeing lately in remakes. We want to do something a bit more fun, exciting and elevated.”

With practical effects being handled by Vincent Guastini’s V.G.P. Effects (we’ll be hitting the shop to chat with Vincent regarding his approach to the film’s creations later this week so stay tuned for that), we asked Miller what ratio of practical to CG effects we might expect in the finished film.

“It’s going to be 100 percent practical,” Miller replied, who was at the time prepping the first shot of the film, an exterior crime scene. “I’m a practical guy. I love practical effects. I think anything I can see on set and touch on set is more exciting. I think I owe it to the audience and the fans of these movies to stay practical and not take it to another CG level.”

As for the critical reaction to the marketing of the 1984 film, which featured the axe-wielding Santa in television ad spots, it was extreme. Critics Siskel and Ebert publicly shamed the filmmakers, and a grass roots movement of angry parents picketed theaters screening the film, which led it to being withdrawn from theatrical release two weeks after its debut. We asked Miller if he was concerned that such a thing may transpire with his remake.

“No, I feel like the world has changed quite a bit since then,” he offered. “I can’t imagine that now. I mean, I’ve seen pretty intense movies over the past few years that have come from the foreign market that are really great, and I can’t imagine that people would react that way now to the remake.”

With regard to Miller’s The Aggression Scale (which releases to the home video market via Anchor Bay Films on May 29th; read the review here and see the trailer below), “I really love the movie,” reflected Miller. “We shot it in twelve days so it was an extremely fast shoot for an action movie, and I think it came out really great. I think it’s a huge step up as far as the action elements go from what I thought my first film Automaton Transfusion was. We were able to put together some crazy sequences that I think are pretty unheard of for the budget level we shot the movie at.”

Scary Movie 5 Gets a Director! Excited? Anyone? Hello?According to the Mayans the world is set to end this December despite the best efforts of one John Cusack. In light of this latest bit of news, we're kind of okay with that. At least if the world implodes, we won't have to sit through another Scary Movie sequel.

But of course that will never happen. Know why the Mayans stopped writing their calendars? Because they ran out of room. There's just so much room on a friggin' stone wheelm ya know? Besides that, would you wanna have to carve another of those? Talk about a pain in the ass.

In any event, yes, according to Entertainment Weekly, Malcolm Lee (Roll Bounce, Undercover Brother) will direct Scary Movie 5 with production slated to begin this summer. Casting is under way but David Zucker, who wrote and directed both Scary Movie 3 and 4, will also be returning to co-write and produce the fifth installment alongside Lee.

A Sneak Peek of the Creature Sculpt for Phil Nichols' Stage and Film Frankenstein Projects

$

0

We previously told you about Phil Nichols' upcoming stage production of Frankenstein at the Country Playhouse in Houston, Texas, and now we've gotten word that he also has a Frankenstein film project in the pipeline with the working title The Sick and Twisted Tale of Frankenstein.

Phil was kind enough to send over some preliminary artwork for The Sick and Twisted Tale of Frankenstein: The Undying Monster along with pictures of the finished sculpture of the facial prosthetic for both the stage and film projects. When we inquired whether showing off the sculpt might be a bit of a spoiler, Phil replied, "The look of the Creature really isn’t the surprise in the feature—the Bride will be!"

The Sick and Twisted Tale of Frankenstein is the first movie Nichols and his sister, Melissa, are doing through Facades FX Films. They are currently in the script and early pre-production phase. The cast so far includes Shelley Boozer (Renfield: The Un-Dead, Blood Sucking Babes from Burbank) as Detective Mary Shelley solving a modern mystery of a kidnapped scientist and a body count of mangled corpses with missing parts. Sam Martinez (Renfield: The Un-Dead) will play Victor Stein, a modern descendant of Victor Frankenstein; Yankie Grant (Renfield: The Un-Dead, Backstabber, Burned Soul) will play City Coroner Dr. Joan Polidori; newcomer Amesti Reoux will play Justine Moritz, who is brutally murdered as the movie opens and becomes the raw materials for the Creature’s mate. Also in the cast are Renfield alums Bobby Simpson III as Detective George Byron, Melissa L. Nichols as Helen McDougal (a body snatcher), and, finally making his screen debut, Michael Raabe as the Creature.

As for the plot, Nichols explains that "it’s now more than 200 years after the events in Mary Shelley’s book occurred, and through the years the Creature keeps coming to the descendants of Frankenstein to fulfill his promise of making him a mate. We catch up to them in the 21st century with the current descendant of Frankenstein, Victor Stein, a war vet conscripted by the Creature to complete the task or face certain death as all his ancestors have. It will be a classic 1980’s-1990’s style slasher film in structure with a lot of blood, gore and viscera. I am writing, directing, and doing the Creature and make-up FX work."

Check out the poster and photos below, and look for more soon. For additional details on the stage play, click here, and stay up-to-date on everything Phil and Melissa are working on by visiting Facades FX Lab on Facebook.

Life of Agony Bassist Alan Robert's Crawl to Me Adaptation Finds Writers

$
0
0

The search is over in terms of finding writers to adapt Life of Agony bassist Alan Robert's graphic novel Crawl to Me. Read on to see who will be bringing the novel to life for the screen.

From the Press Release
The first printing of Alan Robert's critically acclaimed horror graphic novel Crawl to Me (IDW Publishing) sold out within a week of its release, back in January 2012. As a result, the award-winning publisher will be pressing a special hardcover version this summer, titled Crawl to Me: Evil Edgar Edition. As previously announced, director David A. Armstrong, cinematographer for the successful box-office hit franchise Saw, is attached to direct a live-action adaptation of Crawl to Me for the big screen. Additionally, screenwriters David White and T.J. Cimfel have recently signed on to pen the Crawl to Me screenplay. Robert will produce, alongside his partners Jeff Mazzola (Descent) and Christopher White (My Super Psycho Sweet 16 franchise).

"It’s exciting to watch this thing come to life by people who are super passionate about telling this story," says creator Robert. “Over the last few months, we’ve received about a dozen different treatments from various writers to adapt the property. I can safely say that T.J. and Dave’s unique take on the material definitely stood out from the rest. We’re extremely proud to announce that they’ve officially joined the team.”

David White and T.J. Cimfel wrote the contained thriller Shut In, which is currently under option at Ombra Films. Additionally, Cimfel's supernatural thriller No Tell Motel was recently produced by Enderby Entertainment and is scheduled for release in late 2012.

“Crawl To Me really appeals to us because it builds a haunting story around an emotional and intelligent core. It has characters you can connect with, yet doesn’t sacrifice any of the visceral thrills you want from a good horror story. It's the perfect combination for us to tackle,” says White and Cimfel. “The artwork really drew us in. It’s a dark story, but it’s told through these beautiful images that you can’t turn away from. And there’s a cinematic flow to the action—the story’s screaming to be put on the screen.”

The Crawl to Me graphic novel, written and illustrated by the Brooklyn-bred Life of Agony bassist, collected the original 2011 comic series with a painted cover by renowned Monocyte artist Menton3. The introduction for the book was written by Robert's former cartooning teacher and legendary comics artist Walter Simonson (Thor).

Synopsis:
When husband and wife Ryan and Jessica move into their first home together, strange things begin to occur. Half-eaten animals and other remains are found inside the basement’s crawl space. Their family dog disappears within the house. Distant voices are heard from beneath the floorboards. The couple begins to think that an evil entity is living inside their walls and nothing can prepare them for what they’ll discover. Ryan and Jessica soon realize that they must set aside all they believe to be true in order to face their inevitable reality.

See the Trailer for Upcoming Filipino Film Darkest Night

We just got word on a new trailer from the Noel Tan directed Filipino film Darkest Night, which will be released in the U.S. later this year. Check it out!

Not sure if that's the title I would have gone with considering the final Batman movie comes out later this year as well, but maybe they'll grab some extra ticket sales when some bumpkins accidentally wander into their film thinking they're about to see the Caped Crusader and Bane duke it out. Hey, every dollar counts, right? The film stars DJ Perry, Anne Gauthier and French Filipina. It also features Issa Litton, Nic Campos, Jill Palencia, Marife Necesito, Zeny Sevilla, Kevin Vitug and Jonas Gruet.

If you like the trailer, be sure to check out the Darkest Night website and the Darkest Night Facebook page.

From the Press Release
Darkest Night unfolds in a “found video and documentary” style. Its story plops American actor DJ Perry right in the middle of the action to allow western audiences to experience a “holiday” trip away from home. Eastern audiences will identify with the many vivid Asian characters, as well as the local and family setting. Perry's character in the film, Ken Tyler, is introduced to the traditional-minded family of his Filipino fiancé, Susan Reyes (played by Anne Gauthier), during a Christmas Day family reunion. What follows is a dark, horrific trip not to be missed, as demonic forces slowly come into play.

Darkest Night combines Western demons with Eastern spiritual traditions to come up with an original recipe for suspense and terror.

Roger Corman's Attack of the 50-Foot Cheerleader in 3D Promises to Be Epix

Jena Sims, Attack of the 50-Foot CheerleaderRoger Corman graced Syfy with a Sharktopus. For his foray into producing for the Epix network, the “King of the B’s” is busting out Attack of the 50-Foot Cheerleader (in 3D no less) and has assembled quite a cast for a movie about a giant cheerleader on a rampage.

Shockingly, Roger Corman did not produce the 1950’s cult classic Attack of the 50-Foot Woman or its 1990’s remake starring Daryl Hannah. He also had nothing to do with 1995’s Attack of the 60-Foot Centerfold; that was Fred Olen Ray’s homage. Now, at the ripe old age of 86 (and still kicking), Corman is finally getting a piece of the giant woman on the attack action with Attack of the 50-Foot Cheerleader.

Synopsis:
Aspiring college cheerleader Cassie Stratford consumes an experimental drug that grants her beauty and enough athletic ability to make the cheer squad. However, the drug has an unforeseen side effect - Cassie starts to grow and grow and grow.

The titular 50-foot cheerleader will be played by Miss Georgia Teen USA 2007 Jena Sims (pictured above). She’s done some TV acting, but this is her biggest role to date. No pun intended.

Trying not to get trampled beneath her enormous feet will be the likes of Treat Williams (Deep Rising), Sean Young (Blade Runner), Ryan Merriman (“Pretty Little Liars”), Ted Raimi (“Xena: Warrior Princess”), and Mary Woronov (Death Race 2000). You just know that if he hadn’t passed away, David Carradine would be in this cast somewhere as well.

Corman is merely handling the producing duties on this Epix network production. Directing duties fall to Kevin O’Neil, a longtime visual FX guy who previously directed Corman’s Dinocroc and Dinoshark. The script is by Mike MacLean, who just happens to be the guy that also wrote Sharktopus and the upcoming Piranhaconda.

Variety reports that Attack of the 50-Foot Cheerleader is slated to premiere sometime in August on Epix as part of a new slate of original programming for the fledgling movie channel that is a joint venture of Paramount, MGM, and Lionsgate.

For now all I can say is that we're shooting in the U.S. and that it will scare the hell out of you!"

You've gotta like the sound of that! Especially when it's coming from a guy who directed a film entitled Atrocious! Gotta figure he knows his horror! More info on this as it becomes available.

Another adaptation of a toothy young adult tale featuring vampires is headed our way courtesy of Palomar Pictures, and we've got all the details you can sink your teeth into right here. Two vampire puns in one sentence? We win the Internet!

According to Deadline, Palomar Pictures has acquired screen rights to Blood of Eden, a book series by young adult author Julie Kagawa. The series begins with "The Immortal Rules", which Harlequin Teen published this week.

It’s simply a great story with an electrifying heroine,” said Palomar principal Joni Sighvatsson. “It makes the series an ideal subject for a film adaptation. Julie’s ability to familiarize the reader with this complex world in a few pages demonstrates the cinematic qualities of her imagination and complements my own sensibilities as a film producer.

"The Immortal Rules" is set in the future world where humanity has been decimated by a deadly virus and exists primarily as a food source and slave class to vampires that run things. The first book revolves around a young girl who is turned into a vampire and has to choose between her dreams of overrunning the vampire overlords or embracing the idea that she is now one of them.
