Here at Dread Central we appreciate the morbid and the strange! That’s why we’re so stoked for the release of Swiss Army Man. While we were waiting, a package showed up at our door… a message in a bottle, if you will!

The package contained what you see below along with instructions to text “SOS” to 25827. When doing so, we were taken to a new site that lets you interact with the Swiss Army Man directly with your devices or mouse.

Swiss Army Man

Swiss Army Man

Upon following the instructions, we were transported to the Swiss Army Man website, where we spent an insane amount of time manipulating the corpse of Daniel Radcliffe to our heart’s content.

Swiss Army Man

Do yourself a favor… while there, type things like canteen, compass, blowtorch, radio, knifehand, Friday, cannon, and dreams. Pretty hysterical!

In other Swiss Army Man news…

Listen to Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe sing on “Montage,” the first song released from the Swiss Army Man soundtrack below…

A24 picked up Swiss Army Man out of Sundance. It farts into New York and Los Angeles theaters on June 24th and will expand nationwide on July 1st, making it currently the only R-rated comedy on July 4th weekend.

The film stars Daniel Radcliffe, Paul Dano, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

Synopsis:
Hank (Paul Dano) is stranded on a deserted island, having given up all hope of ever making it home again. But one day everything changes when a corpse named Manny (Daniel Radcliffe) washes up on shore; the two become fast friends and ultimately go on an epic adventure that will bring Hank back to the woman of his dreams.

Fallout 4: Far Harbor (Video Game DLC)

Far HarborDeveloped by Bethesda Game Studios

Available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One

Rated M for Mature

It’s been interesting to watch the evolution of digital content over time. We used to laugh at $3 Horse Armor, but now routinely shell out several times that a week for the latest skins, item packs, or extra play coins. It’s a sad direction, since in the same game that gave us Horse Armor (Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion), we saw Shivering Isles, which to date still might be the best bit of DLC to ever be conceived. It was an addition that really felt worthy of the hefty price tag, adding a staggering amount of content that was unique enough to be totally different from the base game without feeling disconnected. It goes past being just on “Top DLC” lists, in many ways outshining the game it’s attached to.

It’s a comparison that’s unavoidable when dealing with Bethesda’s latest child, Far Harbor. Before release, there were rumors that this would rival Shivering Isles in size and scale. And by rumors, I mean that Bethesda’s VP of marketing Pete Hines flat out said it was. Of course there’s a certain expectation for marketing bullshit leading up to a new release, but a claim that bold comes with some reasonable expectations/scepticism. It got me excited, but it’s a massive bar set.

Perhaps if they hadn’t compared the two, I’d have more favorable opinions of Far Harbor. For all that Far Harbor is, it’s certainly no Shivering Isles. It isn’t bad, just kind of bland. A repeat of what we’ve seen before, treading familiar water with only superficial improvements and no innovation. For a game like Fallout 4, more of the same is just fine. But it isn’t another Shivering Isles, and isn’t worth $25.

Far Harbor

Watching this hermit crab pop out of a trailer was easily worth 3 bucks, though.

I don’t have a lot to say on Far Harbor, so this is going to be a pretty short review. It’s not like I didn’t bother to try and find things to talk about. I played the whole thing, found all the extras, did all the sidequests, and even built up my settlements. It’s just that between the few sites to see, and new factions to encounter, there isn’t really anything that sets this apart from Fallout 4. If you want to know what I thought of that game, my review is already up, so go ahead and check it out.

From what I found, Far Harbor adds around 4-5 new weapon types, a new set of armor, a new companion, a dozen or so interesting characters, and about 10 hours of the same shit you saw in the base game. It starts when you receive a message from the Valentine Detective Agency about the kidnapping of Kasumi Nakano. After some light detective work, you figure out that she has gone to the synth refuge of Acadia on the island of Far Harbor. Cool, off to the DLC-land we go.

Starting your journey in Far Harbor, you find that the residents of Far Harbor are all held up in Far Harbor, a harbor on the far side of the Far Harbor island. A mysterious fog has overtaken the island, and all sorts of about six different types of enemies lay siege to the stalwart remaining few. After fighting off a wave of attackers, you are given the vague mission to explore the island, find Kasumi, and find some kind of resolution to the events at hand.

Now, don’t think I’m knocking the game for being open and vague. That has been Fallout’s jam since the game was isometric. I’m fine with the vague, as long as there’s interesting stuff to see. That is where Far Harbor stumbles.

Far Harbor

This is the most interesting quest in the entire DLC, and it has nothing to do with the plot.

Every opportunity that Far Harbor had to distinguish itself from the main game falls short. First up, the fog. There’s a mysterious and menacing fog that blankets the island, which the residents insist is deadlier than a whole ocean of Deathclaws. I was warned that my “mainlander” rad-aways won’t work on it, as it’s a far more insidious and corrupting force. So I checked my rads meter, popped a rad-away after about 30 minutes exposure, and was just fine. Huh, I guess my meds do work. Go figure.

While the fog is thematic, it’s practically pointless. Not only does it do jack shit to conceal enemies, it also isn’t at all unique. Oh, enemies only spawn in the fog, making the safe zones I create monsterless. You know where else that’s the case? Everywhere in Fallout 4. Enemies can be found anywhere that isn’t allied territory. That’s just how the game works.

Traversing the island, you quickly realize that they did next to nothing to make it feel distinct. You run into the same ramshackle buildings, the same dilapidated houses, the same ruined factories, but now with 50% more bog. They attempted to go for a nautical feel, calling the residents of Far Harbor “Captains” and giving them plaid shirts and rain boots, but not once past the opening do you step on a boat. Enemies like gulpers, anglers, and hermit crabs are all land based repeats of Mirelurks. Also, there are more Mirelurks.

There are only about 20 or so areas to explore, and of those maybe a handful are memorable. Of everything I saw, only two stand out as different enough from Fallout 4 to take up my limited brain space. The only worthwhile reward is a new set of combat armor that is super OP and requires you to dive to get it. It could have been fun to hunt for each piece through caves, wrecks, and monster lairs, but nope, it’s all quest markers at weird random spots on the ocean floor.

Far Harbor

Although, on the plus side, now I can pretend to be a power armor matryoshka doll

There are three factions to side with in Far Harbor, and just like the rest of the DLC, they are basically just repeats of the base game. The residents of Far Harbor are the Minutemen, just trying to take back their homes and live a life free of being eaten by monsters or killed by raiders. Acadia, the island’s synth refuge, just wants to give runaway synths a place to live in peace like the Railroad. The Children of Atom are a bunch of nonsensical warmongering zealots declaring war on anyone and everyone their wildly unqualified leader says to, just like the Brotherhood of Steel. The Institute is too busy fucking up the Commonwealth, so they couldn’t bother to have an analogue.

The main thing that distinguishes Far Harbor is that the factions don’t all have to destroy each other. You can make everyone play nice, or leave the island a smouldering waste, choice is yours. This part is nice. I’m not going to spoil anything, but you can also make Acadia less Railroad-like and more Institute-esque. It’s not some overwrought decision either, and makes sense either way you go.

Another thing I liked was the hacking minigame. There’s a part in the DLC where a character named DiMA asks you to retrieve his memories, and in order to do so you have to complete a series of pseudo Minecraft/tower defense challenges. None of it is really hard, but it’s a nice change of pace for a game that stripped a lot of the creative diversity from the core gameplay.

Far Harbor

It shows what kind of awesome and creative things that they could have done with the crafting system, but didn’t.

All said and done, Far Harbor is $25 dollars for another small area of a $60 game. At that price point, I’d expect it to at least rival the vicinity of Diamond City. After spending a few hours in the distant isle, I honestly couldn’t help myself from coming back to the main game. There were a few quests I wanted to finish, and Far Harbor’s three-way duel for dominance just didn’t pull my attention. Prior to this DLC, I hadn’t played Fallout 4 in well over six months. So if the new content couldn’t tempt me away from random Railroad filler, then it’s doing something wrong.

Further Down the Rabbit Hole We Go with The Tension Experience

Four months in, and I’m still not sure whether I’m contending with an immersive, interactive haunt or a nefarious cult masquerading itself as such. And like The Tension Experience itself, this article will raise more questions than it answers. If you’ve got a few minutes, read on, because I may be abducted.

To backtrack, it all started on Monday, February 22nd, with an email from fellow haunt enthusiast and friend Andrew Kasch, directing me to a website for The Tension Experience. Nine days later (and after our “consultations” with individuals we still can’t identify in an abandoned warehouse just north of downtown Los Angeles), we were both being stalked digitally and physically by a shadowy organization calling itself either “The O.O.A. Institute” or “The Omega Council.”

And we still are.

Following that meeting, cryptic emails and threatening phone calls became unnervingly de rigueur, and a fanatical cult arose on the message boards of The Tension Experience website. Obsessively these “O.O.A. Initiates” compared notes, digitally interacted with a female O.O.A. member known simply as “Addison,” and combed through supplied O.O.A. clues in an effort to ascend to the next level… though no one seems to know exactly what that means, and as Addison and the O.O.A. itself have stated, “We aren’t what you think we are,” it’s really anyone’s guess.

For some “Initiates” lengthy questionnaires psychologically profiling them were received, and they filled them out enthusiastically, providing all manner of private information to an organization they know little about. For others our experience has been, from what I can gather, entirely our own.

Following my first meeting in February, I was contacted via email by one “Robert Jones,” a self-proclaimed private investigator who requested to speak with me in regards to The Church of Anoch, another name to which the O.O.A. Institute lays claim. Below is his email:

Sean,

This is going to sound crazy but a google alert led me to your Facebook profile and it would appear you might be able to help me… it’s hard to know where to begin but I’ll try and be as concise as possible but it’s been a long road…

First off I am an investigator, nothing sexy like tv or anything, just mainly tailing low level insurance claims but about 15 years ago I was put on a path I still can’t shake and this is where I’d like some help from you possibly…

I’ll start from the beginning. One of my insurance companies put me on the tail of a handful workman’s fraud cases coming out of a local pipe fitting plant… Normally I’d follow this trail and find a couple of guys pretending to have hurt backs and then drinking at the VFW but this one got real weird real quick.

First off, there were five old timers, you’d think that five claims at the same time at the same factory would trigger something and it did, but that wasn’t the most unusual part. Their families all said they had been distant and acting a bit off and after tailing one I was led to the other four… They’d all been commuting during the day to a strange strip mall “church” two towns away…… a full three damn hours away from their jobs. Well I am pretty decent at my job and it’s usually not hard so they were all busted and lost the claims.

Now normally that would be the end of the story EXCEPT ten years ago I got a call for a questionable life insurance claim…. Four guys, all died in a house fire… the beneficiary and the policies where both a church… this “Church of Anoch”…. I knew that sounded familiar then I realized. It’s the same church from the strip mall the pipe fitters where going to and … sure as shit, the dead guys where four of the five old timers. Well I naturally flip out as this clearly smells criminal and start asking my local PD buddies to look into it but there is one problem… by the time we do the “Church” is gone. No sign of anything, no leads, no trails anywhere… My friends at the company said they never pursued the claim again.

It has literally been on my back since that day just EATING at me… how the hell does an entire church disappear? I couldn’t let that go. Every once in a while I would get a trickle or two from people in town who had a story about the weird people that would go in and out of the place but the whole thing started to feel like a weird dream that never actually happened but still, I couldn’t shake that these guys deaths weren’t an accident and so… I search about twice a month or so and that’s when I got a hit on “Anoch” being mentioned in this …Tension Experience Alternate Gaming Reality thing (I had to do some research to figure out what the hell that was and it still sounds like a funny concept to a guy like me) but I have to follow this lead. Now, honestly, my guess is whoever is behind this probably heard tales of our town’s weird little church and decided to fold it into the narrative of their crazy game but if they haven’t I’m afraid they might be the same people and they maybe recruiting a certain “type”. Sorry, I don’t want to offend you with that BUT there was talk that the Church of Anoch was using puzzles and tricks in the local paper’s classified and help wanted section so this G.A.R. as crazy as it sounds, would be right up their alley for recruitment. One of my PD psych buddies thinks it might make sense they’d prey on vulnerable people looking for mysteries in the everyday world or something like that.

I know it’s crazy to fly out just to hunt down 15 year old not-quite-a-case, but I got a brother out here and I’d love fifteen minutes of your time if you have it.

Desperate to put his behind me,

Robert “Bob” Jones

Having agreed to meet with Jones, he selected an underground pedestrian tunnel in Studio City. As 101 traffic sped by overhead, we conversed in the tunnel. He alternately leveled threats at me (if I were a part of the O.O.A.) and warnings (what the O.O.A. may do to me were I not, and were to continue my contact with them), and then proceeded to videotape me as I read from a script he’d prepared, in which the script led me to claim that I had no allegiance to the organization. That done, we returned to our respective vehicles, though given my curiosity, after driving out of the lot I parked out of sight and returned to the corner on foot in order to run surveillance on him. Eventually making me, Jones angrily approached and warned me, “The O.O.A. is not what you think it is!” before speeding off.

Eight days later I received the following email from Jones:

Hey Sean, after the bullshit you pulled by trying to stake me out I should give you shit, but because I’m a stand-up guy I wanted to give you and everyone else a heads up. This is embarrassing as shit but some jackals mugged me last night… They got my phone, which had some files and numbers on there so I just wanted you to know in case, well I still don’t want to believe it but I am staring to wonder if it wasn’t a set up. I was three sheets to the wind… Some broad started chatted me up, we were getting along great and then she offered a free sample of her services. That’s when they got me. Nothing for free right? Problem is they looked professional. Ski masks but nice boots and watches… I don’t get it. Hopefully even the robbers out here are well to do but just in case it’s connected to what I’ve been looking into… I’m sorry. Keep your head up.

Bob

One day later, The Tension Experience posted the following video on their Facebook page, cleverly edited to show me announcing my allegiance to the Church.

So was I to be led to believe that the O.O.A. itself had mugged and or possibly abducted Jones? Emails to him went unanswered, and as questions continued to build, a portion of the “Initiates” (of which at that point the O.O.A. apparently considered me as within the ranks) were selected for an event on April 30. Address and time for the event were given mere hours before it, which itself turned out to revolve around being led blindfolded with a bag over one’s head into the sub-basement of a decrepit building in downtown Los Angeles and summarily interrogated (the interrogators of course utilized information they’d gleaned from the previously mentioned questionnaires as psychological ammunition).

Here’s a photo of me an O.O.A. member snapped on my phone (after urging me to unlock it and hand it to someone sight unseen), and here’s the article Kasch wrote about his own experience that day

The Tension Experience

Having survived that event, the O.O.A. shortly thereafter made a grand flourish on their Facebook page, stating that the shadowy organization would grant one interview to be conducted via email. For this interview, they reached out to Dread Central editor Steve Barton, who assigned me the task, considering that it was I who was already being stalked. So, in an effort to not only craft an organic interview while hopefully avoiding historic O.O.A. double speak, I surmised I’d ask one question at a time, and opened with, “With who am I emailing?”

Their response was, “We go by many names Mr. Decker. Who I am is not important, a name is just a name. IF you need a title, you can refer to me as “The Overseer, the IVth of My Generation.”

Fair enough, if not cryptic. My next question was, “The stances of the O.O.A. Institute and Omega Council seem at odds with one another, as their (your) messages conflict. What is the delineation?”

Their response came on their Facebook page from O.O.A. member “Four” with the following image:

The Tension Experience

Labeled “Public Enemy,” I was banned from their Facebook page. Perhaps I was getting too close? The answer, or a facsimilie of one, came quickly thereafter, when I was contacted by a Facebook user going by the name “Sentinel Being” from an organization calling itself “BoS,” who not only was (or is) in direct opposition to the O.O.A., but promised to pull back the veil on the organization, were I to put my trust in him/her. It seemed as if I were being recruited, as was excommunicated O.O.A. Initiate Kimberly Noyes Stewart, who had also been cast out, due to what I presume were conversations that according to her the O.O.A. weren’t entirely comfortable in having.

Which leads us to his past Saturday, when at the bequest of Sentinel Being, I found myself sitting in a parking lot in Studio City, awaiting a phone call with further instructions. It arrived, with a male voice instructing me to enter the BLVD Hotel on Ventura Blvd. across the street, and once inside, ask for one “Thomas Barrow” at the reception desk.

What follows are the recollections of Kimberly, who was in the lobby upon my arrival.

Sean Decker arrives moments later. He receives a sealed white envelope from the receptionist. The letter inside instructs that we both need to hand over our cellphones to the receptionist in exchange for a room key. We do so and are given a key for Room #227.

Inside Room #227:

Standard hotel room. Two double-sized beds.

Bathroom door ajar. Wet towel on floor. Man’s toiletry bag open on counter. Various common bathroom items on counter. Flask noticeable inside the bag. Cologne noticeable on counter.

Open suitcase at the foot of the furthermost bed. Female clothing items noticeable. A revolver in a brown holster in plain view.

The suitcase had an airport tag on it: LAX/BWI (Baltimore-Washington DC Intl). Name, “Sawyer.”

Teddy bear on bed closet to door. Possible possession of the daughter.

Family photographs spread out over bedside table, one larger one framed. The photos portray a happy family of three; appears to be a mom dad and grown daughter. Brunette man approx. in 40s, light blonde haired woman approx. in 40’s, light blonde younger female approx. early 20’s. The attractive all American family.

Book on bedside table, opened to Chapter 18. It’s Ascent Into Hell by Andrew Greeley.

Some sort of occult pamphlet/handbook on larger table.

We were allowed several minutes to look around the room, then the phone rings. Man on line says, “Go outside now.” We exited onto the patio where a stern-faced, clean cut, 40-something man in a dark suit stands immediately to the right as we exit the sliding glass door.

The man doesn’t identify himself. He leads us to seating area, warns us that what we are doing is dangerous. He then calls for someone to come out and join us.

The man and woman from the bedside table photos cautiously approach. They introduce themselves as “Tom” and “Margaret.” (It seems apparent we had just been in their hotel room. Last name assumed to be “Sawyer.”) Tom’s demeanor is angry/frustrated/on edge/snappy towards his wife. The woman is distraught/shaken/passive to her husband’s ill mood.

They ask us, “Are you believers?”

In a frustrated tone, Decker expresses, “No, I don’t even know what the OOA is.”

The couple go on to tell us the story of their daughter, “Addison.” They show us various photos of Addison as a child to the present. Very pretty, fresh-faced, Caucasian girl. She was lured into something that is dangerous. They just want their girl back. They need help.

The mom goes on about the type of child Addison was; sweet, smart, grows up to be a young adult who uses social media and takes and posts pictures of kittens. The first warning sign that something was wrong, according to the mom, was when Addison stopped posting the kitten photos. Tom is impatient with Margaret’s yammering.

Addison had dreams of becoming an actress. She left home, headed to Hollywood as so many other young impressionable girls do. Tom had advised her instead to take up an offer provided by a friend of his, Harry Wozniak. Harry could get Addison a job at the local news station as a weather girl.

Once in Hollywood, Addison became affiliated with this organization. At first it was just lots of puzzle solving. Addison loved puzzles. She made many friends who were involved in the same activity. Every puzzle stepped them a little closer, hopefully to the next level of the organization. The true nature of the organization was not known. They happily socialized and did these innocuous seeming activities and trusted the organization, The Church of Anoch.

“The Helmet” – Margaret talked of a helmet that the Church of Anoch uses. She compared it to those telekinetic head gear games that kids play with, except this helmet did the opposite. It sounded like a brainwashing, or a mind-wiping tool. Something that made wearers no longer themselves in thought or action.

Tom says it was a boyfriend of Addison’s, “Bernie, Bennie, whatever his name was.” Margaret asks, “You mean the communist, anarchist?” Tom says, “No,” and shuts her down. Benny is the one who got Addison into this thing, The Church of Anoch. Tom and Margaret take exception to it being called a “church” because it is the furthest thing from holy. They do not like Benny one bit.

Bob Jones, the private investigator, was mentioned by Joseph. Jones was described as inept.

All the while, the suited man stands stoically and watches the conversation. He interjects when things get off track, such as if Decker or I attempt to ask a question. We are obviously here as listeners, not speakers. At one point Margaret accidentally lets the suited man’s name slip: it’s “Joseph.”

Joseph calls the meeting to an end, excusing Tom and Margaret. He then excuses Decker and me, instructing us to go down the stairwell directly behind us.

And we left. But the story doesn’t end here, as the following day Kasch witnessed some very strange things at a secretive O.O.A. event he attended (to which I wasn’t invited, because “Public Enemy”), and his story is forthcoming, in which we learn that Addison may have been brainwashed and her father murdered that Sunday.

Thus far, The Tension Experience has asked for nothing. No fees. No ticketing.

Are you scratching your collective heads? If you’ve read this far, I surmise you might be.

So am I.

Want to get involved? According to their website, they’re building towards something later this year. Perhaps we’ll all be assembled in another sub-basement and overcome by Sarin gas.

In the interim, I’m keeping my door locked.

Indoctrination begins this fall, 2016, in Los Angeles, California; and the OOA Institute would encourage those interested in taking the path to enlightenment to visit The Tension Experience website, “like” The Tension Experience on Facebook, and follow The Tension Experience on Twitter and on Instagram.

A Look Inside the Death House

$

Death House is well on its way, and it’s brimming with stars, gore, and various bits of insanity. Our buddies over at Bloody Disgusting scored the first look at the teaser trailer. Dig it!

About Death House:
Two federal agents fight their way through nine levels of Hell inside a secret prison known as the Death House. A facility-wide prison break turns their flight into a tour of horrors as they push toward the ultimate evil housed in the lowest depths of the earth.

Dubbed the “Expendables of Horror,” the film blasts an ensemble of legendary genre names as Dee Wallace, Barbara Crampton, Kane Hodder, Tony Todd, Bill Moseley, Michael Berryman, Debbie Rochon, Sid Haig, Gunnar Hansen, Bill Oberst, and a number of other official surprises.

Produced by Entertainment Factory’s Rick Finkelstein and Steven Chase, Death House is directed by B. Harrison Smith (Camp Dread, Zombie Killers: Elephant’s Graveyard, 6 Degrees of Hell, The Fields). Smith wrote the screenplay based on an original story by Texas Chain Saw Massacre legend, the late Gunnar Hansen.

The film is NOT a monster mashup of iconic characters. It is an original story revolving around federal agents Cody Longo (Piranha 3D) and Cortney Palm (Zombeavers, Sushi Girl, Silent Night) fighting their way into the bowels of a federal prison that holds the worst prisoners on earth.

The film is a nod toward classic horror but presenting a fresh, new story inspired from Lovecraft and Dante. Practical effects are mastered through the wizardry of Roy Knyrim’s SOTA FX (Gods and Monsters, Ed Wood).

The film’s release is slated for late 2016/early 2017 depending on distribution scheduling.

David Hasselhoff (as Gil Shepard) and Ryan Newman (as Claudia Shepard) will also reprise their SHARKNADO 3 roles. What can really be said about practical effects that hasn’t already been said? There’s no denying that the horror genre was at its game-changing best when the blood was Karo syrup and the monsters played by men in costumes, and there’s also no denying that something was lost when makeup effects artisans were mostly replaced by computers.

Seriously. Watch Carpenter’s The Thing and The Thing (2011) side-by-side. You’ll cry.

We love practical effects. You love practical effects. And here on Dread today, we want to celebrate those glorious creature suits and all that gruesome nastiness that made us fall in love with the horror genre in the first place. Below you’ll find 20 behind-the-scenes photos that will take you back to a time gone by, as well as remind you of one simple truth…

Practical effects will always be better. ALWAYS.

Chiller/Scream Factory just blessed us with three clips from their upcoming original film Fender Bender! Check ’em out here!

Fender Bender will premiere Friday, June 3, 2016, at 9 PM ET. Written and directed by Mark Pavia (Stephen King’s The Night Flier), the movie stars Makenzie Vega (“The Good Wife”), Dre Davis (“Pretty Little Liars,” Scavenger Killers), Cassidy Freeman (“Smallville,” “Longmire”), and Bill Sage (American Psycho, We Are What We Are).

Evocative of the horror-thriller classics of yesteryear, Fender Bender brings you back to a time when the boxes on the shelf at your local video store beckoned you with masked, knife-wielding maniacs and a twisted sense of morals.

Shout! Factory and Brainstorm Media present an EchoWolf Production. A Mark Pavia Film. Executive producers are Richard Foos, Bob Emmer, Garson Foos, Meyer Shwarzstein, Mark Pavia, and Nadia Redler; produced by Carl Lucas, Joshua Bunting, Jordan Fields, and Gus Krieger. Fender Bender is developed and executive produced by Shout! Factory in association with Chiller.

For more info visit the film’s official site, Facebook page, and Twitter feed.

Synopsis:
In a small New Mexico town, a 17-year-old high school girl who just got her driver’s license gets into her first fender bender, innocently exchanging her personal information with an apologetic stranger. Later that stormy night, she is joined in her desolate suburban home by a couple of her school friends, who try their best to make a night out of it, only to be visited by the stranger she so willingly handed all of her information to — a terrifying and bizarre serial killer who stalks the country’s endless miles of roads and streets with his old rusty car, hungrily searching for his next unsuspecting victim.

Stephen King’s IT Finds its Pennywise

$

Well, now there’s no need for any more speculation! The actor who’ll be taking over the demonic reigns in the new telling of Stephen King’s IT has been found! According to THR, Bill Skarsgard has the IT factor.

The actor, who is one of the stars of “Hemlock Grove,” has nabbed the role of Stephen King’s iconic villain Pennywise the Clown in New Line’s adaptation of the author’s landmark novel IT.

Skarsgard is in final negotiations to star in the horror pic, whose cast will also include St. Vincent actor Jaeden Lieberher, Finn Wolfhard, Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs, and Jeremy Ray Taylor.

Andy Muschietti, the helmer behind the surprise horror hit Mama, is directing the adaptation, which is being told in two parts. Dan Lin, Roy Lee, Seth Grahame-Smith, David Katzenberg, and Barbara Muschietti are producing.

The story follows a group of teens called the Losers Club who defeat a creature called It. Years later, the creature returns; and the former club members, now adults, have to band together again even though they have no memory of the first battle. Pennywise is the form the evil entity frequently takes. He is a clown who, when he smiles, is all killer teeth.

New Line’s first movie will tell the kids’ story, while the second movie will focus on the adults.

The project was originally coming together under the direction of Cary Fukunaga, who left over creative differences, and at the time, Will Poulter (We’re the Millers, The Revenant) was to have played Pennywise. The search for a new director pushed the movie by a year, and Poulter was no longer available.

Jon Silk is executive producing IT. Richard Brener, Walter Hamada, and Dave Neustadter are overseeing the project for New Line.

Krampus (Blu-ray)

Krampus (2015)Starring Toni Collette, Adam Scott, David Koechner, Allison Tolman

Directed by Michael Dougherty

Distributed by Universal

I regret to say, I didn’t actually get a chance to see Krampus during last year’s holiday season. I would have liked to, but unfortunately I’m a starving artist, so any opportunity for free food and lodging is met with immediate acceptance. I was sad, since this was basically a movie made for me. Hate other people? Check. Find the whole commercialized obligation to make nice with people you were unfortunate enough to be born with loathsome? Check. Love demonic sieges? Of course. Enjoy evil toys and satanic elves? Oh fuck yes!

By the time Krampus rolled around onto my ample Blu-ray to-do list, I was pretty well over it. My girlfriend had to put it in our Blu-ray player under much protest, and it took another 20 minutes of me being a whiny asshole to shut up. The holiday anti-spirit had left me, and I was expecting a stock, exploitative holiday film stuffed with positive vibes and basted in good-feelings to the point of being inedible. As I did when predicting that Trump could never be the Republican candidate, I ended up eating my words.

While I’m on the fence about how actually scary it is, Krampus is a hell of a lot of fun. That makes it sound like kind of a family film, but it really isn’t. There are already strikes against it for being a Christmas film with a positive message about togetherness (my fingers started bleeding just typing that). It’s not quite an 18+ horror film, but it is a solid 15+, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

What makes the film for me is the creatively exceptional monster design from the minds of WETA Workshop. It’s pretty common nowadays that anything that can be done on a budget by a computer will be, but Krampus goes far above the bar by creating practical puppets for all of their monsters. It’s a level of care sorely missed outside of indie passion projects.

The monsters all look great, reaching an uncanny level of realism that my brain had trouble accepting. Not saying it took me out of the experience, quite the contrary. When I watched the special features and realized that they had created all of these monsters by hand, my subconscious went, “wait, holy shit, that wasn’t REAL?” It’s like in Jurassic Park, you understand that of course they didn’t use real dinosaurs, but the effect was so convincing that in the moment you think, “Yup, that T-Rex just ate the dude on the shitter. Real life stuff.”

As a film, Krampus is an effective horror/comedy that unfortunately drags. There’s a bit too much family drama for my taste, even though it’s all well written. I can’t point to a single part and say that it was bad, but the memorable moments were just a bit too spread out. It did things by the numbers in the pacing department, and I could really have used a lot more shock and awe throughout.

Still, I think you’d have to be crazy to dislike this movie. I can see people not being in love with it, but it’s monster design is excellent and plot enjoyable. The concept of a Krampus coming and making your Christmas an unpleasant ordeal is great, if not a bit smelling of pop-culture motivation. While the plot is a bit basic, the acting is solid and monster work absolutely incredible. And really, aren’t we all here just to see some cool monsters anyway?

It seems that the people in charge of the Blu-ray understand this, as most of the special features are devoted to explaining how the people over at WETA made this all come to life. Watching the experts work, witnessing their design process, and understanding how it all came together was absolutely fascinating. Special features are rarely more than text on a box, but I found these featurettes to be incredibly engaging. I felt like I was being let in on some grand industry secret. If you are interested in practical effects work, it’s a must watch.

Aside from that, there are some pretty basic cast interviews, gag reels, deleted scenes, and an alternate ending that adds absolutely nothing. It’s standard special features. There’s one particularly cringe-worthy piece where the cast talks about how funny and creative everyone else is, and I think I threw up a little when the kid made a goofy face during one of the takes. It doesn’t ruin the package, but it’ forgettable.

The most glowing praise I can give the Krampus Blu-ray package is that the special features made me watch the film again. It’s pretty rare that I want to do more work when reviewing something, but I wanted to see the monsters in action knowing what I knew. To me, that’s the perfect special feature. It renewed my interest in the film and made me appreciate it more.

As a film, I’d recommend Krampus to just about anyone, but to few people glowingly. It’s a good film bordering on great, but I can’t envision who exactly would be in love with it. Similarly, I can’t see it ruining anyone’s night. It’s a good magical adventure that you will enjoy, tell your friends was a lot of fun, and then pass over watching for movie night time and time again. As a Blu-ray, it’s worth checking out just for the special features. Whether or not that makes it worth a full purchase over a rent will be up to you.

Real Account – Vols. 1-2 (Manga Series)

Written by OkushouReal Account

Illustrated by Shizumu Watanabe

Published by Kodansha Comics

Suitable for ages 16+

The fear of the addictive nature of video games and new technologies has always spawned horror stories. In anime like .Hack or Sword Art Online, players who once enjoyed gaming with friends become trapped in the virtual world of the game. Even more intensely, if they die in the game, their bodies in the real world will also die.

The manga Real Account has a similar theme to this, but takes a slightly different approach. In it, a social networking service exists called Real Account, or RA. It merged many different companies together into one site, allowing users access to many kinds of services. These services are what drew in its large user base. With fun games to play, and coupons for real life goods, Real Account has become a staple in recent years. But out of the blue one day, 10,000 random RA users’ minds are sucked into a virtual world the mirrors the website.

In this virtual world, all the people stuck there are pitted against each other for survival. They are forced to play various games to attempt to “win” the whole kit and kaboodle. Supposedly only one person will get out of the gauntlet alive, so it’s every man, woman and child for themselves. However, another big part of this Real Account game is the amount of followers a player has. If their number of followers drops to zero, they will die. Another twist is that if a player dies in RA, their followers do too. And it doesn’t matter if those followers are also trapped in the virtual world, or the real one. So the stakes are incredibly high.

Ataru Kashiwagi is the main character in Real Account. Never relating to his classmates, he convinced himself that his RA friends were more “real.” But with the rule that your followers die along with you, Ataru’s many “friends” quickly stop supporting him. Only Ataru’s sister follows him, thus keeping him alive. Throughout these first two volumes of Real Account, Ataru works to gain more followers as he helps others along the way.

Whenever another “you die in the game, you die in real life” virtual reality anime or manga comes along, it comes with tempered expectations. They have to bring something new to the table to avoid being considered a copycat. Real Account very easily breaks the stereotype by having a social media service be their platform rather than a video game. This is something fresh and unique, and it’s done especially well.

The “games” that are played to pick off people by the dozens (sometimes thousands) are related to various parts of social media. One such game requires players to search for the darkest post (called “tweetts”) on each other’s accounts. Like say for example, an insult to a great friend behind their back, or confessions of a crime committed. By revealing these hidden secrets, it’s supposed to cause that person to lose all their followers, thus killing them.

It is actually during this game in Volume Two that a huge plot twist is revealed. And this isn’t an expected climax, but rather a personal reveal into Ataru’s past. We don’t want to give it away, but it’s an insanely unexpected moment. And for something so intense to happen only in the second volume, it’s safe to say Real Account will probably continue to be a thrill ride.

Speaking of thrill ride, every moment in Real Account really keeps you on the edge of your seat. The different types of games played are unpredictable. When you think you might have an idea of how this all will continue, everything gets turned on its head. The rules of the games are changed left and right, so there’s no way to really predict a pattern thus far.

Real Account really is about revealing the darkness in humanity. It shines a light on the heartless things we would do to save our own lives in times of true despair. There are some characters who think nothing of killing others if it means they can survive. It’s this terrible side of humanity that really puts Real Account on the map. It’s frightening to read, purely because of how realistic the situations are. If you were at risk of dying by following someone on Twitter, but could guarantee your own life by unfollowing them, wouldn’t you?

As of Volume Two of Real Account, absolutely nothing has been given to explain the reasons behind this happening. The events are constantly being broadcast across the world, so everyone is privy to the results. Those who are following players stuck in RA have an especially good reason to watch, because they could die too. While Marble is the only revealed evil we’ve seen thus far, it’s clear that the RA CEO is most likely behind all of this. Could he be planning to pull something crazy in the real world as well? Or does he just have a Christopher Nolan’s Joker complex? “Introduce a little anarchy,” and all that.

It’s difficult to predict where Real Account will go from here, but that’s part of what makes it great. The series has a lot of twists and turns only two volumes in. Real Account breaks the mold on “you die in the game, you die in real life” stories by revolving around social media. It’s brutal in that it shows the villains that lurk within us all when our lives are threatened. And also serves as a unique look at how prevalent social media has become in our modern world. At the least, it certainly makes you think twice about following back that stranger who added you on Tumblr.

Robert Englund Talks Potential Elm Street Return

Though he’s nearing his 70’s, Robert Englund made a name for both himself and New Line Cinema with his iconic portrayal of the dream demon Freddy Krueger.

Square Eyed TV reports that at the Film Comic Con in Belfast, Ireland, Englund dropped an interesting tidbit of news during a Q&A session when he spoke about the possibility of returning to the franchise, telling the audience, “I would certainly like to be invited to do a cameo, to maybe play the cantankerous old professor or the group therapy guy that doesn’t believe they’re having nightmares. I think it would be fun for the audience.

As for his thoughts on the 2010 remake and what went wrong, Englund said that the film didn’t give audiences a chance or even a reason to care about the people on the screen. “You don’t ever see any of the people happy go-lucky; they’re never untainted,” Englund explains. “You need to see before and after so you can invest emotionally with the children. They’re practically zombies from the get-go because they’re haunted by Freddy, and I think that was a miscalculation.
