Crispin Glover, Taissa Farmiga and Alexandra Daddario Join We Have Always Lived in the Castle

Several years back, we reported that Shirley Jackson’s 1962 story We Have Always Lived in the Castle was getting a feature adaptation, but nothing seemed to have come of that iteration of the project. Years later, the adaptation is finally on the way, and it’s because of the cast that we’re already in love with it.

THR reports that Crispin Glover will star opposite Sebastian Stan in the Michael Douglas-produced We Have Always Lived in the Castle, and the attached cast also includes Taissa Farmiga (The Final Girls) and Alexandra Daddario (Texas Chainsaw 3D).

The film centers on an isolated family, The Blackwoods, who use rituals and talismans to ward off hostile townspeople. The clan has already lost four members to poisoning when a distant cousin (Stan) arrives to maliciously secure the Blackwood fortune, at which point family secrets are unearthed.

Glover will play Uncle Julian Blackwood, a man who due to extreme gangrene is confined to a wheelchair and morbidly obsesses over his wife and brother’s mysterious deaths. Farmiga and Daddario will play agoraphobic sisters.

Stacie Passon is directing the horror-thriller, which she co-wrote with Mark Kruger.

Filming begins this month in Dublin.

Arrow Films Takes Aim at Your Wallets with Special Editions of C.H.U.D., Driller Killer, and The Initiation

Physical media may be in a decline, but in the world of cult movie collector’s edition Blu-rays, we seem to be a boom period. Since crossing the Atlantic and getting more into the American market, the UK’s Arrow Films is rapidly raising the bar, not just with their title selection but also with the amount of work they put into their special editions. Now C.H.U.D., Driller Killer, and The Initiation get the hi-def royal treatment.

When the new Vestron label announced a Blu-ray release of CHUD II: Bud the CHUD the other week, I thought it sounded like a cruel joke that the horrid name-only comedic sequel (that doesn’t even have any actual CHUD’s in it) would make it to the DVD before its superior and more notorious predecessor. “Bud” will still draw first blood, but thanks to Arrow the Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers are not staying down in the bowels of VHS/DVD anymore.

From the subterranean depths it crawls! Finally making its long-awaited debut on Blu-ray, director Douglas Cheek’s cult ‘80s favorite C.H.U.D. is the ultimate underground movie experience.

In downtown Manhattan, a police captain’s hunt for his missing wife leads to the discovery of a series of mysterious disappearances in the area. Extending his search into the tunnels and sewers below the city streets, it soon becomes clear that something monstrous is lurking in that subterranean world – and it won’t stay there much longer… Starring John Heard (Home Alone) and Christopher Curry (Starship Troopers) alongside an early appearance from John Goodman, C.H.U.D. has justifiably built up a huge cult following in the years since its release in 1984, with one of the most iconic creature designs of the period.

Arrow has announced C.H.U.D. as a North American exclusive two-disc Blu-ray/DVD release for (presumably) later this year. No street date has been announced just yet. They have, however, announced a slew of disc extras, and thank goodness it’ll be porting over the audio commentary track from the original DVD release, which is one of the funniest you will ever hear.

C.H.U.D. Special Edition contents include:

  • Brand new restoration from original film elements
  • High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) presentation
  • Original Uncompressed Mono PCM audio
  • Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
  • Audio commentary by director Douglas Cheek, writer Shepard Abbott, and actors John Heard, Daniel Stern and Christopher Curry
  • Brand new crew interviews
  • Original Theatrical Trailer
  • Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Dan Mumford
  • FIRST PRESSING ONLY: Collector’s booklet featuring new writing on the film

CHUD

Arrow dug a little deeper for their next Blu-ray/DVD announcement, and this one is for both US and UK audiences. Larry Stewart’s 1984 sorority slasher The Initiation arrives on UK shelves November 7th with a US release date to be announced.

Marking TV star Daphne Zuniga’s debut in a leading role, The Initiation ranks amongst the finest of the college-based stalk-and-slash flicks – now finally restored in glorious High-Definition!

Kelly’s new sorority has a special initiation ritual in store for her – an after-hours break-in of her father’s department store. But what begins as a night of harmless college fun turns sour when, once inside the enormous mall, Kelly and her fellow pledges find themselves locked in for the night… with a deadly intruder stalking the corridors.

Arriving in 1984, The Initiation might have been late to the slasher party, but, alongside the likes of The House on Sorority Row and The Mutilator, it remains one of the stronger entries to emerge in the latter days of the slice-and-dice boom.

The Initiation Special Edition contents include:

  • Brand new restoration from original film elements
  • High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) presentation
  • Original Uncompressed Mono PCM audio
  • Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
  • Brand new audio commentary by The Hysteria Continues
  • Brand new interview with actor Christopher Bradley
  • Brand new interview with actress Joy Jones
  • Original Theatrical Trailer
  • Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Justin Osbourn
  • FIRST PRESSING ONLY: Collector’s booklet featuring new writing on the film by critic James Oliver

The Initiation

But wait… Arrow’s not done. Not when Abel Ferrara’s controversial 1979 video nasty Driller Killer is getting both a UK/US Blu-ray/DVD release and a limited to 2,500 copies SteelBook special edition. The drilling begins in the UK November 28th. Again, we Americans must wait to hear when we’ll get the goods.

In a career that has encompassed such controversial classics as Ms. 45, Bad Lieutenant and Welcome to New York, none of Abel Ferrara’s films have quite managed to match the shock, extremity and downright notorious nature of The Driller Killer.

Ferrara plays struggling artist Reno, a man pushed to the edge by the economic realities of New York living in the late seventies and the No Wave band practising in the apartment below. His grip on reality soon begins to slip and he takes to stalking the streets with his power tool in search of prey…

This one is coming with dueling sets of special content depending on whether you get the SteelBook or the regular special edition.

Driller Killer Limited Edition SteelBook Edition contents include:

  • Limited Edition SteelBook featuring original artwork (2500 copies)
  • Brand new restoration from original film elements
  • High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard Definition DVD presentations
  • Original Uncompressed Mono PCM audio
  • Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
  • Audio commentary by director and star Abel Ferrara, moderated by Brad Stevens (author of Abel Ferrara: The Moral Vision) and recorded exclusively for this release
  • Brand new interview with Ferrara
  • Willing and Abel: Ferraraology 101, a new visual essay guide to the films and career of Ferrara by Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, author of Cultographies: Ms. 45
  • Mulberry St. (2010), Ferrara’s feature-length documentary portrait of the New York location that has played a key role in his life and work
  • Trailer
  • Collector’s booklet featuring new writing by Michael Pattison and Brad Stevens

If you’re not willing to shell out the extra bucks, you’ll just have to settle for the equally fully loaded normal dual-disc special edition.

Driller Killer Special Edition contents include:

Driller Killer

AND… there’s more for UK fans only. Scream Factory already brought Philippe Mora’s Christopher Lee/Sybil Danning lycanthrope shocker to hi-def for us Yanks. On November 28th, it’s Britain’s turn to enjoy Howling II: Your Sister Is a Werewolf in a fully loaded DVD/Blu-ray edition.

Arrow’s list of extras includes:

  • Brand new digital transfer
  • High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) presentation

  • Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Graham Humphreys
  • FIRST PRESSING ONLY: Collector’s booklet featuring new writing on the film by Michael Blyth

Holwing 2

And if you’re living in the UK and still not broke, Arrow also announced William Friedkin’s 1985 Matt Serafini-approved thriller To Live and Die in L.A.. Not really horror so I won’t go into details. You can find them at Arrow’s Facebook page. I’m just too exhausted at the moment to cover anything else. Whew!

Levenger Tapes, The (2016)Directed by Mark Edwin Robinson

Starring Johanna Braddy, Lili Mirojnick, and Morgan Krantz

Distributed by Lionsgate Films

At this point, I could probably just say “found footage” and be done with this. We all know the drill here. There’s going to be some irresponsible teens doing some irresponsible teen stuff in places irresponsible teens shouldn’t be. Some strange stuff is going to happen, but it’ll be overshadowed by people “pranking” each other to make some fake jump scares. Everyone will slowly realize there’s some ghost shit going on, which we will only ever get glimpses of due to frequent shaky cam cutaways and visual “glitches.” One by one, everyone will get picked off, someone will cry into the camera, we’ll get a quick shot of the ghost as the audio explodes my eardrums and the screen cuts to black. Thanks for watching Found Footage Ghost Story #812, now available at your local Redbox!

I’m being my typical gloriously witty and snarky self of course, but it isn’t far from the truth. The numbers by which these films are painted have become so predictable that you could practically sail your ship by them. Even the slightest innovation becomes noteworthy, but is more often than not completely overshadowed by mass consumer disdain for the whole genre. If you do something different, it better be really fucking different, or you’ll never make it out of the gates.

Unfortunately, The Levenger Tapes just isn’t different enough to set it apart from the pack. It does shake things up with a mysterious supernatural backstory that only ever gives hints as to what’s going on. The performances are pretty good, and it evolves enough in the final act that I actually watched it twice. Without spoiling anything, the typical supernatural ghost story gets flipped on its head, and it’s unclear just who exactly the villain is. It never fully explains itself, which while interesting becomes its big flaw in terms of payoff. By the time the credits roll, you’ll be intrigued, but never really invested.

There are some good shots in The Levenger Tapes, but it’s weighed down by almost slavish devotion to convention. Turning on the night vision and seeing the eyes in the dark was effective, but was ruined by a quick, shaky cam cut and some screams hamfistedly delivering us to the next set piece. There was a pretty cool sequence where a crying voice in a bush lured one of the characters inside, but I couldn’t take it seriously over my repeated utterances of, “why the fuck would you go towards the scary ghost bush?” Predictably, the sequence ends when a spooky hand sticks out for a quarter of a second and the camera “glitches” as we have yet another shaky cam cut.

There is a film in here that I want to see. If The Levenger Tapes was more focused on the interesting story of the abducted girl and what exactly she meant, this could be an excellent thriller. Instead, it relies on long overdone conventional found footage bullshit tactics that are simply no longer effective. When The Marble Hornets did camera malfunctions, it was an integral part of their lore. When everyone else does it, it’s because it’s a cheap way to hide cuts and lower your effects budget.

Please stop ruining what could be good movies with found footage bullshit.

James Wan Offers Quick Mortal Kombat Update

James Wan is a busy cat these days, but IGN caught up with him recently to find out about the next Mortal Kombat film that he’s signed on to produce.

It’s still cooking away,” Wan tells the site. “With that particular project, that’s a really cool property that I loved growing up as a kid. Besides the game, even the movies as well, I kind of enjoyed them for what they are.

Wan added, “The key here is to try and do it right. I don’t want to rush into it. So right now, we’re just trying to take our time to make sure it’s heading in the right direction. I think that’s more important than trying to rush through it and pump up something that no one likes.

I love the characters. I think they’re such colorful characters. It’s such an amazing take on, basically, Enter the Dragon. It’s that fantasy version, the video game version, of Enter the Dragon. And in doing so, they ended up creating such interesting characters, and I think that is such a cool world to explore. This really mythical, bigger world that lives on another dimension on top of ours. I think that’s really fun to play with, and so we’ll see.

Stay tuned, kids!

FrightFest 2016: Horror Documentary Hostage to the Devil Releases New Stills and Artwork

One of the must-see premieres at this year’s Horror Channel FrightFest in the UK is Marty Stalker’s “shock-doc” Hostage to the Devil, and hot on the heels of Uncle Creepy’s interview with Ralph Sarchie, one of the film’s participants, during this week’s episode of Brainwaves, in which he discussed Father Martin (the subject of the documentary), we have several stills and some new artwork to share.

HTTDbanner
From the Press Release:
Causeway Pictures, Underground Films, and Content Media are pleased to announce the world premiere of Hostage to the Devil at London’s FrightFest Film Festival 2016 on Friday 26th August, 4.00pm, Discovery Screen 3.

Over five years in production, director Martin Stalker has made a film which examines age-old questions about the existence of the Devil and the debate over good versus evil, all through the life of a controversial Irish-born Jesuit priest, Fr Malachi Martin.

Using first person-interviews with paranormal royalty such as Lorraine Warren, Ralph Sarchie, and John Zaffis, along with dramatic reconstructions, archival evidence, and words straight from Martin, this spine-chilling documentary takes the audience on a journey through an extraordinary life marked by battles against the Vatican, scandal, contention, and most of all, a deep and all-encompassing belief in the theory and practice of exorcism.

HTTD2
The film explains in graphic detail the process and outcomes of such an ordeal, including the horrifying case study of a four-year-old girl whom Fr Martin assessed as requiring an exorcism. This was to be the last case he was involved in before he died under mysterious circumstances.

A child possessed. An exorcist locked in combat with an ancient evil. Using first- hand interviews, dramatic reconstruction, archival evidence, and a dead man’s words, this documentary film tells the true story of Father Malachi Martin and asks: In the battle for saving a soul, who really is ‘Hostage to the Devil’?

Director Stalker says: “I initially had feelings of disbelief that nothing had been made about this incredible and mysterious man (Malachi Martin) before. This was what influenced my decision to get involved and to tell his story. I feel the film industry has been saturated with misconceptions on exorcism and diabolical possession. So it was important that this documentary addressed the realism of this subject matter through the knowledge of one man, through the personal experiences of others, and through using science and the Catholic Church as critical and theological anchors in the film.”

Hostage to the Devil is a CAUSEWAY PICTURES film in association with UNDERGROUND FILMS, BORD SCANNÁN NA HÉIREANN / THE IRISH FILM BOARD, and NORTHERN IRELAND SCREEN. It is set for general release in the UK through Content Media in October 2016. Content Media is also handling worldwide sales.

For Art’s Sake: Interview With Team Nilo, Why Asemblance Is My Art Game Of The Year

$
0
0

As you could tell from my review, I was a pretty big fan of Asemblance. This is rare for me. I like indie art games conceptually, but in practice I find them to be full of more shit than a senatorial debates over the federally mandated price of toilets. I’m willing to call just about anything that genuinely tries “art,” but not all art is good. You can say that I’m basing my opinion on just preference, but I like some pretty shitty art. There’s a difference between “I like this” and “this is genuinely well made.” It’s a subtle nuance that most people seem unwilling to understand.

Many art game devs also forget that games are supposed to be entertaining. This is my beef with most walking simulators. I’m not too stupid to enjoy good storytelling or understand the subtle nuances of a non-linear plot, but most of these are written for an audience of one. They seem less attempts at telling a good story and more to flex how unique and “in touch” the creator is. Shows like Queer as Folk have shown us that alternative narratives can be progressive, interesting, touching, and fun, but most art game devs still cling to this assumption that enjoyment is secondary to “the feels.”

When an art game comes along that I call “good,” I consider that to be very high praise. It has to fill all three categories, being artistically insightful, well made, and entertaining. Positively entertaining, at that. Not the kind of ghastly joy I get out of picking every last nit out of the bloated carcass of a terrible game.

I first played Asemblance because I was avoiding E3 work and the Steam user reviews described it as a game that could be beaten in 20 minutes. I found that just like the titles of art game, walking simulator, or interactive narrative, the description was only a sliver of truth. It was far insufficient to actually capture its essence. It’s a game that can be beaten in 20 minutes, or weeks. It’s a story that can be discovered over and over again. It’s a few small rooms that become many, filled with mundane objects that become keys to unlocking the world. It is simple, small, contained, grand, vast, and complex, and does each without compromising any other element.

So yeah, I liked it. And apparently, the people at Nilo Studios liked me back. They recently contacted me with the highest praise that any artist can give, which is that I “got what they were going for.” As much as this tickles my boner (and it does, a lot), I think it speaks more to a general lack of understanding by critics. If you read my Calendula article, you can get a sense of what I’m talking about.

At the same time, I don’t think it’s my place to explain what an artist intended. So, I’m not going to. Instead, I contacted Nilo Studios back, and asked them if they would like to take a stab at explaining it. I wanted to learn their inspiration, their drive, and where they saw themselves in the larger sci-fi/walking simulator narrative market. One of the biggest audience complaints was that the story didn’t come together, so I wanted to give them a chance to respond.

*WARNING! THIS WILL NOT MAKE A WHOLE LOT OF SENSE IF YOU ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE GAME! AT THE VERY LEAST, READ MY REVIEW!*

So on a bit too warm San Diego morning, my hungover ass answered the phone to the bewilderingly upbeat voices or Eric Raab (Writer/Idea Monger) and Niles Sinkey (Creative Director/Doer of the Hard Work). They told me that they were sad that Adam Burd (Sound Wizard) was unable to join us, as he was busy partying with all the DJs and cool kids. I was surprised to find that between the three of them, that was all of Nilo Studios. It took three dudes, one idea, and a year to make Asemblance. If you know anything about indie studios, that’s pretty fucking impressive. There are plenty of games with five times that staff that can’t pump out similar titles in 2-3 years.

Among the Sleep

I’m looking at you, Krillbite Studio.

They credit their ability to complete the project so quickly to their industry experience. Eric and Niles met during their previous job at Bungie, where they were part of the team that worked on Destiny. Though proud of their work, they found that they didn’t have the creative freedom they needed to flesh out their own innovative sci-fi story. Go figure.

So as their store page says, they were inspired by Twilight Zone, and when I asked they said more specifically an episode from the 1985 version titled “Dreams for Sale.” I advise you watch it, as while the inspiration is clear, the two are radically different. Asemblance isn’t an imitation of the source material, but rather rooted in this foundation. It started with an idea of dream being the framework for self discovery. They were fixed on this idea of repeated viewings, where subtle changes would unlock new pieces, leading to either a trickle or flood of information. Starting with this meta-concept, they then began to work on the fictional foundation.

Their goal with Asemblance was to explore cause and effect through narrative in a non-binary fashion. Commonly, the style of choice in games is based off of several fixed points that diverge into different narrative arcs. For example, in Mass Effect, do you kill the Rachni queen, or let her live? Even in a more branching narrative like Fallout: New Vegas, the model of choice is based on various pivotal moments. With Asemblance, they wanted discovery and choice to be based on player interaction. So, if you choose to spend more time in the office reading documents, where will that lead you as the player?

Asemblance

The apartment is the epicenter for the game’s emotional climax, but holds many subtle clues beyond the shift between light and dark. As the player, how you chose to explore it will dictate your feelings on the setting.

It’s a model that makes playing the game an integral part of uncovering the narrative, which differentiates it from most walking simulators. For titles like Dear Esther, while there are things to see if you look around, the act of seeing them doesn’t influence how the narrative plays out. It could as effectively be watched as a Let’s Play. To achieve the explorative element of Asemblance, Niles worked to create varied environments that told a layered story visually. With only four(ish) rooms to work with, each had to be immediately accessible. The forest is peaceful, the office is cluttered and lonely, the home is warmer and bright, and the simulation room is dark and ominous. Starting with real and varied environments, they then populated it with minute details.

Entering a room for the first time, it is important to be visually drawn to key elements. Lit computer screens, flashing play buttons, and saturated elements like the butterfly immediately draw focus. This is game design 101, but exploring past these elements is where the real meat is. You won’t notice at first that those little notes on the wall or scattered papers have relevant text on them. They worked to pack meaning into every element, hiding messages in every note, picture, and sound. Their goal was a story that revealed itself in layers, peeled directly by the player.

In order to play a game, however, there has to be a mode of interaction. The minds at Nilo wanted this mechanic to be simple and immediately understandable. So they went with the simplest of ideas: just looking at stuff. Starting with that basic concept, they worked to add levels of interaction to that mechanic. Observation became the tool for discovery. Just like the narrative design, they wanted the process of experiencing the mechanic to be similarly layered. While it’s initially easy to figure out that looking at something causes a reaction, the number of key points where it changes the environment are few. Once again peeling back the layers, it’s up to the player to realize that learning from what they observe and applying that to their understanding of the world is as important as activating key events.

Asemblance

For example, take this room. It’s immediately apparent that the recorder with its bright green light is important. The red glow of the clock pulls your gaze, making you take stock of what time it is. But at what point do you realize that those papers strewn about are actually legible, and contain information vital to your understanding? Even more, when do you start noticing the hat rack behind you, and the single cap? Unpacking the environments visually is fundamental to Asemblance.

Still, they understand that this mechanic is fundamentally flawed. Once you realize that staring at things changes stuff, the obvious player reaction is to just stare at everything and see what changes. As the game is quite dense, they realize that there is a real risk that players will just stare at everything trying to get every ending without making the logical connections. This is where they were hoping the cooperative social aspect would come into play. Similar to how players unpacked games like P.T., they wanted there to be a meta-cooperative element to discovering all the secrets and endings. It takes a bit of mental gymnastics to pull back from the traditional idea of “cooperative” gaming and apply it to the entire player base, but it’s a realistic understanding of the current “just Google it” style of modern gaming.

Discussing this mechanical shortcoming, I got a little information about what they plan to do with Asemblance as a series. As stated, they want this to serve as the “pilot” for a series. While they weren’t ready to tell me what they had cooking for the next episode, they told me that the next episode would not be “Chapter 2.” Instead, they seek to tell a number of short stories in the framework of the titular company “Asemblance.” The company has many projects, so while this episode was about an individual in a memory machine, there’s a lot of space to evolve into other, semi-modern sci-fi experiments.

There’s a reason I used the term “individual” in a memory machine. As I final question, I got to ask them to elaborate on the story of Asemblance (the game, not the company). They said that one of the most interesting part of player’s reaction to the game was their assumption of who the character was. Responding to the criticism that players found the story to not come together, they challenged that players should broaden their perspective. As player interaction dictates the course of the story, so does your narrative perspective affect your conclusions.

Asemblance

It’s pretty clear early on that things are not as they seem, so its not a stretch to assume that you might not be as you seem.

It’s a common concept in literature to do “alternative readings,” but in the framework of the nameless character of Asemblance, such an experiment works. The basic message of someone haunted and trapped by memories is obvious, but ask yourself, who is this person? Viewing it from different perspectives, how does that alter your understanding? How does that affect the presentation of the information, and the meta-narrative of the memories expanding past the machine? Once again, it’s up to the player and their observation to uncover these questions. Only this time, it’s another level removed, requiring a change in your interaction as a player outside of the game world.

It was an incredibly informative talk with two devs who had a robust vision for a dense narrative. It might seem a bit self serving, attempting to prove that my prefered art is “the best art.” I’m too human to completely divorce myself from this concept, but that mostly doesn’t matter. This isn’t about convincing you to like Asemblance. It’s about raising the level of discourse and analysis for art games. After reading this, I hope you look at the game again and think, “I hadn’t considered that.” If it makes you just dislike it more, then I’ll be happy. At least your comment calling me a philistine will be more interesting to read.

Hands down, the horror event of the year is Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” about which we haven’t heard a single negative thing from the community.  Hell, even the mainstream folks have fallen in love with it, and a big part of the reason why is the show’s incredibly authentic soundtrack.  If you’ve been jonesing to hear it again, your wish is our command!

Volume One is available NOW on digital with Volume Two following this coming Friday, August 19th.  CD’s arrive in September, and we have all the details below.

From the Press Release:
Lakeshore Records is releasing the STRANGER THINGS – Original Netflix Series Soundtrack in two parts. Volume One released digitally August 12th and arrives on CD September 16th. Volume Two releases digitally August 19th and on CD September 23rd. Both volumes feature the original score by Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein, members of the popular Austin experimental synth band S U R V I V E.

“The directors were previously fans of S U R V I V E. They used a song from our first LP in a trailer they made to pitch their concept to Netflix. Once the show was picked up, they reached out to see if we were available to score the show,” Dixon stated.

Stein added, “We discussed having a classic tone and feel to the music for the show but being reserved enough that it wasn’t ’80s cheese, while offering a refreshing quality so that felt modern. This was one of the qualities that drew them to our music in the first place. Having a familiarity with classic synths worked, but with an overall forward-thinking approach.”

“STRANGER THINGS” is the breakout Netflix original series set in 1983 Indiana, where a young boy vanishes into thin air. As friends, family, and local police search for answers, they are drawn into an extraordinary mystery involving top-secret government experiments, terrifying supernatural forces, and one very strange little girl. A love letter to the ’80s supernatural classics that captivated a generation, “STRANGER THINGS” stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Matthew Modine, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer, and Charlie Heaton. The series is now streaming on Netflix globally.

Formed in 2009, the prolific Austin, Texas, experimental synth quartet S U R V I V E recently contributed to the soundtrack for the acclaimed indie horror film The Guest. Now, S U R V I V E have completed self-recording their second full-length, titled RR7349 (pre-order here), via their home studios, which will see a September 30th release via Relapse. The synth quartet’s sophomore full-length and Relapse debut is a dark, sweeping exercise in analog synth mastery. The pulsating, 9-song instrumental release, inspired by IDM and horror scores alike, is simultaneously ominous and hopeful, tense and relaxed, percussive and melodic. It is a unique addition to the Relapse discography and unquestionably S U R V I V E’s best work to date.

But back to “Stranger Things.” The first season is available to stream now on Netflix. It you haven’t joined the party yet, what are you waiting for?  Dive in… the water’s nice and warm!

Rest in Peace: Kenny Baker

His horror resume may be brief, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the passing earlier today of actor Kenny Baker, beloved worldwide for his portrayal of R2-D2 in the Star Wars films.

Baker’s niece confirmed his death to the BBC. Per his agent, Johnny Mans, Baker (born August 24, 1934, in Birmingham, England) had been ill for a couple of years and was being cared for by his nephew.

Baker became a household name in 1977 when he took on the role of the robot R2-D2 in the first Star Wars film. He went on to appear with Anthony Daniels’ C-3PO character in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, as well as the three prequels.

He also appeared in Time Bandits (the actor’s favorite role, he told the BBC back in 2001: “The director Terry Gilliam’s such a nutcase, he’s so enthusiastic, you can’t help enjoy it. It was just a fun film to make.”) and Flash Gordon. His horror credits include a 1982 TV version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, 1960’s Circus of Horrors, and When the Devil Rides Out, which has been in post-production for some time. And in the fantasy realm there’s Labyrinth, Willow, and TV series “Prince Caspian and the Voyage of the Dawn Treader.”

As Mans said, “He will be sadly missed.” We echo his sentiment and leave you with a tribute from 20th Century Fox.

The Blumhouse-produced found footage film Creep, which exclusively landed on Netflix last year, introduced the horror world to Josef, one of the most fascinating characters to come along in the genre’s recent history. Mark Duplass is simply phenomenal in the flick, and we’re happy to report that he will be reprising the role.

Over on Twitter today, @MarkDuplass teased the impending Creep 2.

Trying on wardrobe today for Creep 2,” he wrote. “This one is gonna get a little bit weird.”

Last we heard, the plan is to eventually turn Creep into a trilogy.

Creep Synopsis:
Aaron is an optimistic videographer who decides to come work for Josef after answering his ad on Craigslist. All Aaron has to do is record Josef throughout the day and remain discreet about the entire setup. Josef tells Aaron that he’ll be recording a series of videos for his unborn son, as he’s suffering from a terminal illness and will never be able to see him grow up.

While Josef seems strange, the money is too good for Aaron to pass up, and he agrees to the task. However, as the day progresses, Josef becomes increasingly strange and Aaron finds it difficult to tell whether or not some of the things Josef is saying or doing are truly jokes or actually a sign of true danger and mental instability.

Shane Black Talks Potential Monster Squad Sequel

$

Released in 1987, The Monster Squad is one of the most beloved horror movies out there, but the reason it never got a sequel is because it wasn’t all that well-received when it was initially released. Nevertheless, the fanbase led to remake talks a few years back, but that doesn’t mean a sequel is off the table.

Speaking with IGN, The Monster Squad co-writer Shane Black expressed interest in remaking the film, but he also entertained the thought of making a direct sequel to the 1987 gem. The site’s staff suggested that the story center on the original characters doing battle with the monsters once more, as adults, which Black commented on.

When you say the kids are grown-up the first thing I go to is the movie, or the book really, It by Stephen King, which is about kids who fight monsters when they’re young, then as grown-ups they’re sort of beckoned and they have to return to their childhood hometown,” said Black. “And I think that’s kind of close to what you’re saying in a way. I don’t know how you would distance yourself from that.”

It would be interesting to have two movies – one The Monster Squad, and one The Monster Squad and they’re 30 years apart and so are the kids; the characters have aged,” Black continued, seemingly warming up to the idea. “As long as people understood that’s what we’re doing, I think that could be fun. That’s a good idea!

Alchemist Cookbook, The (2016)

AlchemistCookbookPosterStarring Ty Hickson, Amari Cheatom

Written and directed by Joel Potrykus

Screened at Fantasia 2016

If you’ve experienced and then recommended writer/director Joel Potrykus’ other films like Ape and Buzzard from his pretentiously proclaimed “Animal Trilogy,” you’ll probably find he’s covering some similar ground with his latest, The Alchemist Cookbook, centering around another eccentric character who plays by his own rules, only to eventually lead himself down a path to ruin.

With Buzzard, the film’s lead takes slackerdom to an art form, obsessing over creating DIY Freddy Krueger finger knives out of a Nintendo power glove; in Cookbook, a young black kid haphazardly delves into the dark arts by way of kitchen lab alchemy to disastrous results. Both films have compelling premises and leads, but Buzzard especially succeeds in places that Potrykus’ new film does not, largely because his proclivity towards following the mundane rather than serving the story doesn’t complement the elements of fantasy found as this film progresses.

Premiering at this year’s Fantasia International Film Fest, The Alchemist Cookbook follows the bizarre day-to-day life of a twentysomething hermit as he divides his time between amateur chemistry experiments, playing with his cat Kaspar, and eating bags of Doritos. Actor Ty Hickson as Sean in these early scenes doesn’t say a lot, but Potrykus establishes immediately that this kid has some serious issues, including an unhealthy obsession with the occult. His only connection to the outside world is a sidelined thug named Cortez (Cheatom), who drives out to Sean’s remote cabin to give him his rigid list of supplies and medication. As the nights roll by, Sean screams into the night, seemingly inciting a battle with an imaginary foe. Combining his chemistry with incantations and fire, it begins to look like he may have a connection with the underworld as well.

The horror of Sean’s situation starts to manifest as the film slowly progresses. The sounds of some kind of creature begin to echo around him, sounding far off during the day and ever closer at night. There are two great scenes in The Alchemist Cookbook – one involving a much more frightening side of Cortez (played wonderfully by Cheatom) and another showing a very creepy standoff between Sean and… something. Both of these scenes are wonderfully shot and rooted firmly in the realm of horror fantasy. The problem is that Potrykus chooses to pump the brakes when things start to get interesting instead of pushing the intrigue.

Once Sean spirals further into a game he began but now can’t control, he’s driven to self-abuse and violent behavior that would have been more interesting if not for his non-reaction to these two crucial scenes. If The Alchemist Cookbook would have embraced its wilder side instead of reverting back to the unremarkable humdrum that dominates the running time, a film of more substance could have emerged.

In other words, don’t be afraid to make a horror film. There are odd choices here that work against this being horror, but strangely, the last shot is a freeze frame that’s pure horror schlock that reminded me of “The Raft” in Creepshow 2.

The Alchemist Cookbook is worth watching, but watch it alone. As a filmmaker, it seems like Joel Potrykus prefers to subvert expectations rather than just giving the audience what they want, and he may be mistaking that for an artist’s impulse instead of really thinking like a filmmaker and trying to entertain. Potrykus has a film in him that could rival Gus Van Sant’s silent, haunted Last Days, but the hypnotic poetry of that film is only seen in glimpses of Potrykus’ work thus far. Whether he can pinpoint exactly why his films like The Alchemist Cookbook are compelling at times and outright boring in other places will determine if his style will lend itself to a truly signature film down the road.

Infinite Warfare‘s space combat may be a radical departure from what we usually expect from Call of Duty, but one staple of the series will indeed be returning: There will be a zombie mode, and like the main game, it will be in space.

From the Press Release:
Zombies dudes and dudettes, rejoice. Activision Publishing, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI), and Infinity Ward today unveiled Zombies in Spaceland, the undead survival co-op mode launching on November 4 with Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

Immersing players in an all-new 1980s setting with a most excellent soundtrack from the era, Zombies in Spaceland transports fans into an original, action-packed storyline where they’ll fight as one of four classic ‘80s characters and battle the living dead in a space-themed amusement park full of deadly zombies, fun attractions, and much more.

“Call of Duty – and zombies in particular – has such an incredible history with passionate fans, which inspired us to take all the co-op action that has made the series so great and fuse it with one of our favorite decades in pop culture: the ’80s,” said Brian Bright, Project Director at Infinity Ward. “Zombies in Spaceland is an all-new zombies experience where day-glow meets fright nights. It’s accessible for new players but also has a deep layer of progression, brimming with easter eggs and various game features that will be a blast for hardcore zombies fans. We can’t wait for fans to go hands-on this fall.”

Zombies in Spaceland tells the story of four aspiring actors who come upon a mysterious movie theater for an audition. They’ve been invited by director Willard Wyler, portrayed with voice and likeness by Paul Reubens (Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, “Gotham”), who was once the shining star of the horror genre. Unbeknownst to the actors, they will be transformed into characters and transported straight into Wyler’s film to fight against waves of zombies in a space-themed amusement park set in the ‘80s.

Fans play as one of four ‘80s archetypes: the jock, the nerd, the valley girl, and the rapper. The characters are voiced by a seasoned cast of comedic actors, including Seth Green (“Robot Chicken,” Austin Powers), Ike Barinholtz (Neighbors, Suicide Squad), Jay Pharoah (“Saturday Night Live,” Ride Along), and Sasheer Zamata (“Saturday Night Live,” “Inside Amy Schumer”). Additionally, players will encounter an enigmatic DJ in the theme park, portrayed with voice and likeness by David Hasselhoff (“Knight Rider,” “Baywatch”), who will be an invaluable resource as they try to get out of this horror movie alive.

Fans can learn more about Zombies in Spaceland by tuning in tomorrow, August 17, at 9:00am Pacific on Twitch at twitch.tv/callofduty, on YouTube at youtube.com/callofduty, and on Facebook at facebook.com/callofduty for a special reveal stream hosted by actor Jay Pharoah as he speaks with the game developers in more detail.

Fans who pre-order any edition of the game will receive the totally rad “Zombies in Spaceland Pack,” which consists of bonus in-game digital items, including a unique zombies weapon camo, zombies weapon reticle, animated zombies calling card, and Fate & Fortune card pack. They’ll also receive the reimagined, fan-favorite Terminal bonus multiplayer map.

At Call of Duty XP, the biggest Call of Duty fan event in history, fans will be able to play Zombies in Spaceland and engage in a special zombies laser tag experience. Call of Duty XP is just two and a half weeks away, taking place September 2-4 in Los Angeles. Tickets are on sale here: ticketmaster.com/event/090050C7F42A442C.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is scheduled for worldwide release on November 4th on PlayStation® 4 system; Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft; and PC.
