Ron Perlman on Hellboy 3

Every so often a new quote comes from Ron Perlman about the possibility of a third Hellboy movie. The guy is that property’s most staunch supporter, but it seems like even his patience is beginning to wear thin.

During a recent interview with Screen Rant, Perlman dropped the following on hopeful fans…

We don’t talk about [Hellboy 3] anymore. Because [Guillermo del Toro’s] busy, and I’m busy. Maybe one day he’s going to call and say, ‘Hey, let’s do it.’ But for right now? We’re happy discovering new worlds to conquer.

And so it goes, kids. And so it goes.

Robert Englund Talks His Idea for a New Nightmare on Elm Street Film

Ever wonder what kind of movie Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund, would make if given the reins of the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise? Well, wonder no more!

If I was in control of my own Nightmare on Elm Street movie, I have an idea I would have liked to see,” Englund tells Florida Today. “I thought it would be great if the children of previous victims, or just kids who grew up hearing stories about Freddy Krueger, were each haunted by their own version of Freddy Krueger. Kids who grew up hearing stories about this Freddy Krueger guy and the awful things he did envisioned him in their own way, and that is the version that begins to haunt them. Some people may picture him as stout, another might envision him as tall & thin, another with a different hat or a different sweater. He could have different gloves, or even a glove with small razor blades as referred to in the first movie. It would be neat to see very different interpretations of Freddy Krueger based on the child’s vision of who or what Freddy was to them. After all, each person’s subconscious would picture him in a totally different way.”

Bruce Campbell Talks Why Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash Crossover Would Not Work

Bruce Campbell, star of Starz’s Evil Dead television sequel, “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” revealed during a reddit AMA just why Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash never came to fruition.

Aside from Freddy and Jason, were any other crossovers ever discussed for Ash? Always thought Evil Dead/Hellraiser would be good,” asked a reddit user.

Campbell answered, “I’ll be honest with you. I’m not real interested in crossovers. One of the main reasons why ‘Ash vs. Jason vs. Freddy’ did not come to pass is because we couldn’t control any other character other than Ash. That felt like a creatively bankrupt way to go. Not to mention, you’re splitting the proceeds three ways with partners you might not want.

Hidden Secrets Revealed on Kong: Skull Island Poster

Thanks to our friends over at Scified, we’ve learned about some hidden secrets in the Kong: Skull Island poster. With the use of a backlight, various sentences graffitied throughout the poster come to light, so to speak. Possible spoilers inbound.

Kong is refereed to as an Apex Primate Adolescent Superspecies which is particularly interesting because it means that the concerns that he won’t be big enough to fight Godzilla when the time comes can finally be laid to rest because he isn’t yet fully grown. He’s also referred to as a Predator / Guardian / Roaming / Deity, which sure sounds appropriate. The text Hypervore leaving seems to indicate the name of his species.

We learn that the area depicted is known as the Bone yard and that it features a Geological Disturbance and Abnormal Readings. Not surprising, what with a giant ape being there an everything. He isn’t the only behemoth on display however, as we are also shown what appears to be either an enormous eel-like fish or marine reptile.

Lastly, the word Skull, is revealed, followed by the date April 7th, 1973, which will probably be around the time that the film takes place.

Kong: Skull Island is directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, stars Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson, and will be released on March 10, 2017.

Carrie (Blu-ray)

carrie blu 1Starring Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie, Amy Irving, Nancy Allen

Directed by Brian De Palma

Distributed by Scream Factory

Adaptations of Stephen King’s literary works are often a gamble; some features are outright classics, while others stumble so badly they remain notorious flops for years to come (Dreamcatcher (2003), anyone?). To be fair, the bar for King’s page-to-picture legacy was set awfully high when a then-relatively-unknown Brian De Palma adapted the 1974 novel “Carrie” to great acclaim. His film, Carrie (1976), visualized King’s words via an artistic lens that is still, to this day, considered one of the finest works of horror ever produced for the screen. All of De Palma’s signature screen tricks are on display, giving Carrie a unique visual aesthetic that easily set it apart from most of the ‘70s horror fare. King’s novel, meanwhile, has proved to be a wellspring of entertainment, responsible not only for De Palma’s film but for a TV remake, a sequel, a remake, a musical, and a stage play. All of these pale in comparison to De Palma’s vision, and no matter how much Hollywood tries the magic of this movie simply can’t be replicated.

Social outcast Carrie White (Sissy Spacek) is unquestionably the least popular girl in school. The classmates who do notice her can’t stand her, while the rest of the school – administrators included – can’t even be bothered to get her name right. Her mother, Margaret (Piper Laurie), is a religious whacko who finds sin in everything, admonishing all around her. When a distraught Carrie freaks out after getting her first period in the school showers, her classmates ruthlessly taunt her until she is reduced to a blubbering pile of tears. Carrie finds no solace at home, either, when her mother punishes her for becoming a woman, convinced her menstruation is nothing more than the work of Satan. Carrie is ordered to pray within a small closet, where the creepiest tiny statue of Jesus ever committed to film is enshrined. The only person who shows any sympathy toward Carrie is her gym teacher, Miss Collins (Betty Buckley), and even she finds the girl to be trying at times. Disturbed by the lack of empathy shown by Carrie’s fellow students, Ms. Collins orders the gym class to endure three weeks of detention on the fields, running and exercising, or else they’ll be suspended and denied permission to attend the prom. Everyone falls in line except for Chris (Nancy Allen), who gets a firm slap across the face for her refusal.

At least one student seems to feel remorse: Sue Snell (Amy Irving). In a bid to improve Carrie’s feelings, Sue asks her boyfriend, Tommy (William Katt), to invite Carrie to the prom. He agrees but convincing Carrie isn’t as easy; she rejects him repeatedly, positive his charm is a ruse, until finally agreeing when pushed. Things seem like they’re beginning to turn around for Carrie, and even though her mother is extremely disapproving of her going to the prom for once Carrie begins to act on her own accord. Margaret warns her that “they’re all gonna laugh at you” but Carrie rebuffs her words. This is one instance where she maybe should have heeded her mother’s caution because while Carrie is determined to have a fun night for the first time in her life, Chris and her meatball boyfriend, Billy (John Travolta), have something sinister planned. Little does anyone know that Carrie is more than just a meek loner, and soon the true nature of her hidden power is about to be unhinged.

The greatest success of Carrie is how humanistic it is, with the devastating drama making Carrie’s journey all the more tragic. Carrie possesses powers unknown and unclear – even to her – and the only time they are revealed is when someone has wronged her. Unfortunately, that happens virtually every day. She’s a sheltered young woman, ignorant to normalcy because her mother is a zealot hell-bent on preaching the gospel and worshiping the Lord. To her, all things in life are full of sin, even those that are out of our hands. Carrie’s menstruation is a rite of passage for most young women, but because her mother refused to educate her Carrie sees this coming of age moment as certain death. Her shrieking is a laughable joke to all the other girls. Seeing it from Carrie’s point of view, it must have been terrifying.

Carrie’s telekinetic abilities are never used exploitatively, either. She doesn’t move things with her mind just because she can; the only time her powers come out is when a person has done something cruel or dismissive. She doesn’t fully appreciate her unique abilities, using them as a tool for learning more than anything. Maybe people who do her wrong will think twice the next time, like that little shit on the bike who taunts her as she walks home. These little acts of retaliation are meant to be shocking but harmless. The problem for Carrie is when something so grievous happens to her she enters a catatonic state, emotions erupting from within, and she is nearly blind to her actions.

Carrie is less a horror film and more of a dark coming-of-age drama, with aspects that border on comical. Piper Laurie was convinced the script called for humor because her character is so outrageously over the top. She chews so much scenery even a master set consumer like Rod Steiger would be given pause. Chris and Bill’s revenge plot seems a tad farfetched, but you also have to remember kids in high school can be shitheads; it isn’t so outside the realm of possibility. One thing I still haven’t figured out, no matter how many times I have seen the film, is whether or not Sue and Tommy really care about boosting Carrie’s self-esteem or if it was all just a joke. De Palma suggests their motivations are true but I’m not so sure; I just have a hard time buying it. And that’s part of the fun, I suppose; the ambiguity of those moments. Studios can attempt to recapture the magic of this cinema classic all they want but it just isn’t going to happen. Carrie is a bonafide classic; a product of its time, done with style and substance.

MGM issued Carrie on Blu-ray years ago, featuring a subpar transfer with a weak encode; it was generally considered to be a flawed release. Scream Factory has trumped that edition considerably, going back to the original negative (something they don’t do often), commissioning a 4K scan that finally allows the film to look as good as it did on theater screens over 40 years ago. The 1.85:1 1080p image is a marked improvement over the last release, featuring tighter contrast, richer blacks, saturated colors, and improved definition. Cinematographer Mario Tosi shot the film with a deliberately gauze-y, dreamy aesthetic that causes many scenes to look soft and smoky. Taking the stylistic choices into consideration, this is still an excellent image filled with fine details and a stronger visual appearance than any home video release.

Both of Scream Factory’s audio options should please fans of the film, with the choice of either the original English 2.0 mono track or a 5.1 surround sound mix. If you’re a purist then, by all means, have at it with the mono mix but to my ears the remixed surround sound track is a clear winner. Dialogue sounds richer and clearer, rears are used sparingly to create tension and punch up some of the action, and – most importantly – Pino Donaggio’s absolutely incredible score sounds exquisite pumping through all available speakers. The soundtrack takes viewers on a rollercoaster of emotions, flipping from tragic cues to upbeat Italian funk to emotionally draining melodies. It is often said that score is 50% of a picture’s success and Donaggio’s music holds that adage to be true. Subtitles are available in English SDH.

On tap for you horror loving cats is the first clip from the new fear flick Scare Campaign. Check it out and look for moore soon!

From the Press Release:
Studio71, the digital entertainment company and multichannel network of the ProSiebenSat.1 Group, and YouTube pranking sensation Matteo Moroni, aka DM Pranks, today announced the U.S. digital premiere of the Australian horror thriller Scare Campaign on Monday, October 24, 2016. Written and directed by brothers Colin and Cameron Cairnes, the team behind 2013’s critically acclaimed 100 Bloody Acres, Scare Campaign explores what happens when a reality TV prank show’s latest victim unexpectedly turns the tables on the cast and crew.

Explains Cameron, “[Scare Campaign] really evolved from us watching YouTube clips – stuff where elaborate pranks get a bit out of hand, where people are really put under duress. There’s a funny one from Mexico that did the rounds a few years back. People enter a lift, the lift breaks down, and then suddenly this ghost girl appears behind them, screaming. People were genuinely freaking out at the sight of this girl! So our idea was: ‘What if one of those people, those victims, turned on this girl and the people behind the prank?”

“What if they pranked the wrong guy?” prompts Colin.

Scare Campaign stars Meegan Warner (“Turn: Washington’s Spies”, The Veil), Ian Meadows (“The Pacific”), Olivia DeJonge (M. Night Shyamalan’s The Visit), and Josh Quong Tart (“Home and Away”).

Hailed by pop culture news site Junkee.com as “nasty, gruesome, and wickedly entertaining,” Scare Campaign went on to win Best Film, Best Direction, Best Feature Screenplay, and Best Sound at the Aussie horror festival Monster Fest in 2015. As the film gets ready for its U.S. digital debut on October 24th, the Scare Campaign audience should prepare themselves for an adrenaline-fueled horror movie, full of twists and turns and plenty of scares.

Studio71 will be releasing Scare Campaign on iTunes, Amazon, and Google Play on October 24, 2016.

Synopsis:
The crew of a reality TV prank show facing dwindling ratings decides to up the ante by setting up a terrifying prank in an abandoned asylum.  Things go horribly wrong when they prank the wrong guy.  Brothers Colin and Cameron Cairnes (100 Bloody Acres) deliver a night of blood-soaked terror full of twists and turns that will satisfy any gorehound.

Behold the Evolution of Freddy Krueger

Our good buddies over at Halloween Costumes are cranking up the Freddy love to 11, as they’ve just premiered a new infographic which samples the evolution of everyone’s favorite dream demon. Dig it!

Take a moment to relax. Find a nice, quiet room, and lay down in the dark. Close your eyes. Feel yourself drifting off to sleep… Suddenly, you see a figure off in the distance. The vision is hazy at first, but then he slowly rises into focus. You can see a ragged striped sweater on a tall lurching body. An old brown hat with a wide brim. A sharp ray of light flickers: he has blades coming from his sleeve, like every finger is a knife. Burnt, disfigured skin glistens in the moonlight. Finally, the man of your dreams fully appears in front of you: it’s Freddy Krueger. One of the most infamous movie villains of all time came into the pop culture lexicon in 1984’s A Nightmare on Elm Street and throughout the 9-film franchise, Krueger’s look changed bit-by-bit, burn-by-burn, and other such b-words that Freddy is well-known for spouting. We’ve created this infographic showing the changes, as well as Krueger’s kill count per film and interesting facts about each movie. See for yourself, but whatever you do… don’t fall asleep.

Exclusive Trailer Premiere: Framed

As part of the Sitges Film Festival “Coming Soon” section, Marc Carreté‘s (Asmodexia) newly-founded Creatures of the Dark banner “crashed the party” with a big screen stream of the first full trailer for Marc Martínez Jordán’s upcoming home invasion/slasher shocker, Framed.

Following a private investment and co-production strategy, Carreté’s newly created genre label will launch with Martinez Jordán’s Framed with various subsequent projects already in the works, the first of which will be helmed by Carreté himself.

With principal photography now wrapped and the project well into post-production, Framed marks Martínez Jordan’s first directorial feature after helming the award-winning shorts “Timothy” and “Caradecaballo.”

framed-05

Shot in Sant Cugat del Vallés (Barcelona), Framed plays out as a contemporary slasher at heart although, having spoken with Carreté at this year’s Sitges Film Festival, without giving too much away, some of the torture techniques of choice are anything but orthodox and I can’t wait to catch this one once it finally hits the festival circuit. But it’s not all about explicit horror and Framed promises a cutting commentary on today’s use (and abuse) of cutting-edge technology and social networks.

Penned by Martínez Jordán in collaboration with Jaume Cuspinera (Any de Gràcia), a script writing tutor at the reputable ESCAC film school, where the majority of the technical and artistic crew working on the film hail from, Framed stars Joe Manjón (Risen), Àlex Maruny (Ghost Graduation), Clàudia Pons (Asmodexia), Júlia Molins, Enric Auquer (Bloody April Fools), Biel Montoro (L’Altra Frontera), Daniel Horvath and Lídia Casanova, with special appearances from Pep Sais ([Rec]², “Brutal Relax”) and Mercè Montalà (Secuestro).

With the film well on the way towards completion, Carreté tells me the film is expected to hit the international festival circuit some time in the first quarter of 2017. In the meanwhile, we’ll leave you with the first full trailer. Keep watching this space as we also have plenty of beans to spill regarding Carreté’s upcoming extraterrestrial project, After the Lethargy.

Synopsis:

Framed is THE social network fad everyone is talking about. Anyone with access to a mobiel device can stream wherever they like and whatever they like. Thousands of users around the world have laid down the ultimate gauntlet to fend off any competition by achieving the highest number of online viewers. Rules and censorship no longer exist making way for ever-increasing levels of violence and sadism.

Alex (26) is getting ready to head to Berlin to start a new chapter in his life. His sister Claudia (18) is invited to a leaving party that Alex’s friends have organised to see him off in style. Whilst the party is in full swing, the group of friends is savagely attacked by three intruders intent on one thing: Achieving the ultimate audience by subjecting the partygoers to some of the most sadistic games and torture methods imaginable.

The Room Stars Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero Reunite for F(r)iends

This is not a drill: thirteen years after he left the entire world in shock and awe with his bizarre cult classic The Room, Tommy Wiseau is finally back in the movie-making business with F(r)iends, and judging from the trailer, it looks like we’ve got another bizarre masterpiece on our hands.

The Hollywood Reporter got the exclusive scoop on F(r)iends, which is directed by Gary Fong and was quietly filmed in LA and Canada. Greg Sestero, who played Mark in The Room, stars as a guy whose family were murdered my ninjas. This leads him to be taken in by a mortician played by Wiseau, who considers himself to be an artist with dead bodies as his canvases. And things do get bloody.

Aside from writing and directing the sitcom “The Neighbors,” Wiseau’s career since 2003 has consisted mostly of attending screenings of The Room, making very occasional cameo appearances, and taking legal action against anyone who he feel infringes upon his copyright, so I’m glad to say the least that he’s finally leading another film. It’s also great to see that he has no hard feelings towards Sestero after his tell all book The Disaster Artist, which chronicled the making of The Room. It’s currently being made into a film titled The Masterpiece directed by and starring James Franco, which will feature brief appearances from both Wiseau and Sestero, so we’ll be seeing more of the duo onscreen in the near-future.

I’ve long suspected that Shadow Warrior 2 might be the goriest game of 2016, and the launch trailer seems to prove me correct. It’s played to the tune of “The Touch” by Stan Bush, who also recorded a new song for the game titled “Warrior”.

From the Pess Release:
Shadow Warrior 2 is the stunning evolution of Flying Wild Hog’s offbeat first-person shooter following the further misadventures of former corporate shogun Lo Wang. Now surviving as a reclusive mercenary on the edge of a corrupted world, the formidable warrior must again wield a devastating combination of guns, blades, magic and wit to strike down the demonic legions overwhelming the world. Battle alongside allies online in four-player co-op or go it alone in spectacular procedurally-generated landscapes to complete daring missions and collect powerful new weapons, armor, and arcane relics of legend.

He’ll be at Screamfest on October 19 to promote the TV spinoff, so I guess he doesn’t need to kill people who find out what he does for a living after all.

SUSPENSE THRILLER “WOLF CREEK” PREMIERES THIS OCTOBER, EXCLUSIVELY ON POP

Inspired by one of the most terrifying, cult movie franchises ever released in theaters, named one of “The 25 best horror movies since 2000” (AV Squad), one of “The 100 Best Horror films” (Time Out), and one of “The 25 Best Horror Movies Since The Shining” (Vulture), the six-part television event, WOLF CREEK, is a psychological thriller premiering exclusively on Pop on Friday, October 14 at 10:00 PM, ET/PT.

In conjunction with Lionsgate Television and Zodiak Rights (a Banijay Group company), the WOLF CREEK television series on Pop stars John Jarratt, who reprises his movie role as the murdering psychopath Mick Taylor, wreaking havoc in the Australian Outback—except this time, things are different. The television series immediately turns the entire genre on its head when a 19-year-old American college student, played by rising star Lucy Fry, survives the massacre of her parents and little brother and sets out to hunt down the killer and avenge her family.

Based on true events, the original WOLF CREEK movie was introduced in 2005 at the Sundance and Cannes Film Festivals before achieving global box office success and cult film status among horror fans around the world.

“WOLF CREEK is holy !#@$! scary!” said Greg McLean, Executive Producer of the WOLF CREEK television series and the writer, director and producer of the WOLF CREEK movies. “The television series delivers the same pulse-pounding tension and terror of the films combined with a storyline that evolves into a suspense filled, character driven psychological thriller. In many ways, WOLF CREEK is more like a Western—set in the untamed, desolate landscape of the Australian Outback, with gritty characters and an immersive story of revenge and good versus evil.”

“WOLF CREEK is a binge-worthy, premium revenge tale that we are thrilled to bring fans at the perfect time of the year,” said Brad Schwartz, President, Pop. “To turn everything you expect from a horror film around and hunt the psychopath through a strong and singularly-focused female protagonist is thrilling to watch. It is probably the scariest series to ever premiere on basic cable and will have viewers hooked 13:40 minutes into the first episode.”

The story of WOLF CREEK begins when an American family is on holiday in Northern Australia and becomes the unsuspecting prey of Mick Taylor, a sadistic serial killer who hunts and kills tourists in the Outback. The sole survivor is Eve Thorogood, a college student, who vows to bring the killer to justice or die in the attempt. The story of WOLF CREEK reveals her complex and extraordinary journey, traveling every step of the way as she evolves from child to adult, from prey to predator. But can she triumph over Mick Taylor, evil incarnate?

John Jarratt is a television and film actor, producer and director from Australia. Jarratt is best known for his chilling performance as the iconic character Mick Taylor in the feature films “Wolf Creek” and “Wolf Creek 2.” His previous credits also include Peter Weir’s “Picnic At Hanging Rock,” Baz Luhrmann’s “Australia” and Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained.”

Lucy Fry is a film and television actress. Most recently, Fry starred opposite James Franco in the Warner Bros. for Hulu mini-series “11.22.63.” She is also known for her roles in director Joseph Castelo’s indie film “The Preppie Connection” and Mark Waters’ fantasy feature “Vampire Academy.”

A STAN original, WOLF CREEK is produced by Screentime (a Banijay Group company), in association with Emu Creek Pictures and financed with the assistance of Screen Australia and the South Australian Film Corporation.
