Second Scare Campaign Clip Introduces Rohan

On tap for you horror-loving cats is the second clip from the new fear flick Scare Campaign. Check it out and look for more soon!

Scare Campaign Release Details:
Studio71, the digital entertainment company and multichannel network of the ProSiebenSat.1 Group, and YouTube pranking sensation Matteo Moroni, aka DM Pranks, present the U.S. digital premiere of Australian horror thriller Scare Campaign on Monday, October 24, 2016. Written and directed by brothers Colin and Cameron Cairnes, the team behind 2013’s critically acclaimed 100 Bloody Acres, Scare Campaign explores what happens when a reality TV prank show’s latest victim unexpectedly turns the tables on the cast and crew.

Explains Cameron, “[Scare Campaign] really evolved from us watching YouTube clips – stuff where elaborate pranks get a bit out of hand, where people are really put under duress. There’s a funny one from Mexico that did the rounds a few years back. People enter a lift, the lift breaks down, and then suddenly this ghost girl appears behind them, screaming. People were genuinely freaking out at the sight of this girl! So our idea was: ‘What if one of those people, those victims, turned on this girl and the people behind the prank?”

“What if they pranked the wrong guy?” prompts Colin.

Scare Campaign stars Meegan Warner (“Turn: Washington’s Spies,” The Veil), Ian Meadows (“The Pacific”), Olivia DeJonge (M. Night Shyamalan’s The Visit), and Josh Quong Tart (“Home and Away”).

Hailed by pop culture news site Junkee.com as “nasty, gruesome, and wickedly entertaining,” Scare Campaign went on to win Best Film, Best Direction, Best Feature Screenplay, and Best Sound at the Aussie horror festival Monster Fest in 2015. As the film gets ready for its U.S. digital debut on October 24th, the Scare Campaign audience should prepare themselves for an adrenaline-fueled horror movie, full of twists and turns and plenty of scares.

Studio71 will be releasing Scare Campaign on iTunes, Amazon, and Google Play on October 24, 2016.

Synopsis:
The crew of a reality TV prank show facing dwindling ratings decides to up the ante by setting up a terrifying prank in an abandoned asylum.  Things go horribly wrong when they prank the wrong guy.  Brothers Colin and Cameron Cairnes (100 Bloody Acres) deliver a night of blood-soaked terror full of twists and turns that will satisfy any gorehound.

This event, hosted by Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell, will include LA’s wild Up chamber orchestra performing a re-imagined score of Sam Raimi’s classic horror film live to picture. This score is written by the film’s original composer, Joseph LoDuca, who will also be a featured artist. Opening the show will be Harry Potter’s Luna Lovegood, Evanna Lynch, and violinist Lili Haydn, performing the World Premiere of Joseph LoDuca’s The Tell-Tale Heart: A Duet in Terror based on Edgar Allan Poe’s horror classic.

Legend has it that The Theatre at Ace Hotel is haunted by the spectral remains of singers and musicians from jazz’s Golden Age. These phantasmagorical artists will be acting as a Greek chorus throughout the evening.

Noé Hernández stars. The film will be getting a release in UK cinemas on November 18th.

We Are the Flesh is set in a post-apocalypse Mexico, where a brother and sister, Lucio and Fauna, wander a ruined city for years in search of food and shelter. They find their way into one of its last surviving buildings, where a man makes them a dangerous offer to survive the outside world. As they help him transform the building into a womb-like cave, a disquieting sexual relationship emerges, along with a dynamic in which darker instincts do their destructive work.

Hello, horror fans, and welcome to our new home here on Dread Central!

For those of you who have been keeping up, I have maintained some podcast silence as we have prepared for our busiest year yet with Horrible Imaginings Year 7, Fabio Frizzi in San Diego, The Terror on the Tenth Art Gallery, several movie screenings, and more. Now that I have been invited to join Dread Central’s Podcast Network, I’ve decided to record this brief podcast as a sort of reflection of the last couple of months, as well as an introduction for those of you who may be new to this show’s format.

beyond-the-gates-hiff

Now that the podcast is getting up and running again, I have several new episodes lined up, as well as a semi-regular co-host who will be joining me at the end of the month. Lots to look forward to and discuss! In the meantime, check out some of the podcasts that have given airtime to Horrible Imaginings in the last month or two:

Dread Central’s own Who Goes There Podcast reflects on Horrible Imaginings and The Greasy Strangler along with special guest Jon Condit for their 83rd episode.

Beth Accomando’s Cinema Junkie Podcast did two in-depth looks at the festival’s offerings, as well as a comprehensive look at the musical horror scores of Fabio Frizzi in conjunction with the concert we put on at Brick by Brick in San Diego. Catch her preview of the festival here, her post festival wrap-up here, her look at Fabio Frizzi here, and her delving into the Horrible Imaginings horror literature segments here!

miguel-and-frizziThe TG Geeks were not only sponsors, but also recorded a reflection and a number of interviews for their podcast. Check out their coverage of festival nights one, two, three, four, and five, their wrap-up, and interviews with Horrible Imaginings special guests: composer Eric Elick and Beyond the Gates director Jackson Stewart!

The Cut Speakuence Podcast also discuss their experiences at the 7th annual Horrible Imaginings Film Festival here!

Just to attempt to add some flavor to the show, I also include a recording of my introduction and discussion of the Cuban zomedy Juan of the Dead, which was screened at the University Community Branch of the San Diego Public Library earlier this week. I appreciate their taking a chance on horror for educational purposes and asking me to lead the charge there! If you haven’t seen the movie, watch it now!

Stay tuned for Episode 161, which will be another one of my “Storytime Edition” audiobook-style episodes!

Get ready, kids, because we’re taking an early look at what is easily the best damned box set we have ever seen – The Herschell Gordon Lewis Feast Blu-ray box set!

From the Press Release:
The Herschell Gordon Lewis Feast
[Blu-ray + DVD – 17 discs] (October 25th)
Limited to 2500 copies!
Director: Herschell Gordon Lewis

In 1963, director Herschell Gordon Lewis pulled a cow’s tongue out of an actress’ mouth on camera, and in doing so, changed the landscape of horror cinema forever. That sequence was just one of numerous gruesome gags featured in Blood Feast, the film credited as being the world’s first gore movie. It’s no exaggeration to say that the modern gross-out movies of today owe their very existence to the pioneering efforts of H.G. Lewis. But whilst Lewis is most widely celebrated for his blood-and-guts epics (Two Thousand Maniacs!, The Wizard of Gore et al.), there’s more to the prolific director than splatter.

From tales of sordid photographers (Scum of the Earth) to sex robots (How to Make a Doll), from biker girl-gangs (She-Devils on Wheels) to youths-run-amok (Just for the Hell of It), and from psychic witches (Something Weird) to hard liquor-loving hillbillies (Moonshine Mountain), the filmography of H.G. Lewis reads like a veritable wish-list of exploitation movie madness.

Now, for the first time ever, Arrow Video is proud to present fourteen of the Godfather of Gore’s most essential films (including nine Blu-ray world debuts), collected together at last and packed full of eye-popping bonus content. So put your feet up, pour yourself a glass of good ol’ moonshine, and prepare yourself for a feast – H.G. Lewis style!

Ah, the circus! So innocent on the outside… so evil on the inside. It’s been a while since last we had a good circus-themed horror flick but that’s about to change as THR is reporting that Jonathan Lipnicki has nabbed the lead role in indie horror film Circus Kane, which sees a reclusive circus master invite a group of social media stars to his house of haunts. Anyone who can make it out before being scared into submission will earn $250,000 — but the stars soon learn they are not only competing for money, but also fighting their lives.

Lipnicki first came into the public eye as the adorable kid in Jerry Maguire. He’ll be joined in Circus Kane by co-stars Mark Christopher Lawrence and Nicole Fox.

Circus Kane is being directed by Christopher Douglas-Olen Ray from a script by James Cullen Bressack and Zack Ward, based on a story by Sean Sellars. DeInstitutionalized’s Gerald Webb and Christopher Ray are producing along with Bressack.

Joss Whedon Working on a Historical Fiction Horror Movie

The man responsible for two of the most commercially successful films in history is soon gonna be making a mark on the horror genre in a big way. In an interview with Complex, Joss Whedon confirmed that he’s working on a historical fiction/horror script. He was quoted as saying:

“I’m in the middle of a screenplay that I am extremely passionate about, and I am going to be extremely passionate about it again on November 9. It’s definitely a departure from the things that I’m known for. It’s as dark as anything I’ve ever written … It’s a historical fiction slash horror movie about a time when the world was going insane, World War II. I got to tell you: I was in Germany and Poland doing research for this movie and I was seeing so many parallels [to the U.S.]. And I know it’s a shopworn thing to compare the orange guy to the little guy with the mustache, but you see things, indelible things in terms of propaganda, the state of the country, and the parallels are eerie as fuck.”

There’s no word on whether or not he’ll also direct, but the last time he ventured into horror was with the fantastic The Cabin in the Woods, so this news has us grinning from ear to ear. We’ll certainly be keeping a close watch on this story as it develops.

Beyond the Walls (Miniseries, 2016)

beyondthewallsStarring Veerle Baetens, Francois Deblock, Geraldine Chaplin

Directed by Herve Hadmar

I’ll admit I had my reservations before checking out Herve Hadmar’s spooky series “Beyond the Walls” (“Au delà des Murs” for all my French copains) – seems as if the majority of streaming services are putting out all the good stuff these days, but something still had me a bit leery before setting eyes on this one. Now that I’ve completed the three episodes so generously offered up to me by the folks at Shudder TV, I can say, “Damn, was I wrong!”

Totaling over two and a half hours in length over the course of the three episodes, we set our sights on Lisa (Baetens), a solemn speech therapy worker who manages to snag the deal of a lifetime: a house willed to her by a man she never met. (Did I mention he sat dead in the same chair for twenty-plus years?)

In any event, and ultimate creepiness aside, Lisa has come into some new digs; and at the onset of her residency, she hears noises… behind the walls at night. The happy side of me would be overjoyed at the thought of a new place to crash, but the sane side would only need to hear one voice, one slam, one ANYTHING, and this guy would gladly hand the keys back over and relax in my cramped apartment. Lisa, however, decides to investigate, and after thoroughly smashing a human-sized hole in her wall, she climbs on in and discovers a parallel world unlike anything she’s ever witnessed before. Lisa’s past traumatic history will pale in comparison to what she’s about to delve into.

Upon entering into this new territory, she meets up with a man named Julien (Deblock), who appears to be on the run from humanoid-type creatures; and before you know it, they’re both in imminent danger and forced to hide out from these nasty-looking suckers. What this series lacks in action at times is swamped with the beauty of its atmosphere – with its Guillermo del Toro-like set decoration and intently frightening visuals (between the lurking creatures and the use of candlelight) – the entire production is something to visually blanket yourself in – it just looks that good.

There are more than a few lagging areas in this presentation, but there is a much bigger purpose for all of the downtime, and it’s the build-up, which works very nicely (no more details for you). Secrets will be unfolded, and while I’ve already checked out the three-episode series, I can only hope that there will be some sort of continuation, spin-off, or whatever come what may.

Do yourself a huge favor, and give this one a good long look if you’re a Shudder subscriber – it’s worth the dough.

stevedillonSome really sad news has come in this weekend, as Steve Dillon’s brother, Glyn, confirmed the renowned comic artist’s death earlier this morning; thus far the cause hasn’t been revealed, but it is known that Dillon passed away in New York City.

Dillon, whose exact birth date is unclear, was born sometime around 1962 in Bedfordshire, England. He got his start at the young age of 16 and is best known for his work on Hellblazer, Preacher, and The Punisher with writer Garth Ennis. He also lent his talents to the likes of Doctor Who, Judge Dredd, Bullseye, and Wolverine.

Below are just a few of the tributes and remembrances of Dillon from social media. We’d like to add our own sincere condolences to Steve’s family, his friends, and the other members of the comic community.

His images are certainly burned into our memories and will live on for many, many years to come. Rest in peace… another taken from us much too soon…

Get Your First Look at Chilling Docu-Series The Killing Season

When it comes to real-life horrors, there are few scarier than the serial killer.  Especially those that have eluded capture and might still be out there.  One such monster, from Long Island, New York, is the subject of “The Killing Season,” a new A&E docu-series from the director of Cropsey and Killer Legends that premieres with two back-to-back episodes on November 12th.

Read on for more details and an official “first look” video.

About “The Killing Season”:
A&E Network’s gritty new docu-series “The Killing Season” from executive producer Alex Gibney (Going Clear) follows documentarians Joshua Zeman (Cropsey) and Rachel Mills (Killer Legends, “American Pickers”) as they investigate one of the most bizarre unsolved serial killer cases of our time — ten dead sex workers discovered on Gilgo Beach, Long Island. Authorities believe these killings are the work of the Long Island Serial Killer, who after five years remains at large. Forging relationships with cyber-sleuths, journalists, and the victims’ families, Zeman and Mills uncover connections that suggest Long Island is just the beginning.

“The Killing Season” premieres with back-to-back episodes on Saturday, November 12th, at 9PM ET/PT.

‘“The Killing Season’ takes viewers on a chilling ride through the unknown and is a perfect example of impactful storytelling that drives the cultural conversation,” says Elaine Frontain Bryant, EVP and Head of Programming, A&E.

Working with amateur cyber-sleuths, Zeman and Mills uncover a web of eerie connections to unsolved murders from Atlantic City to Daytona Beach and beyond — revealing that serial killers are targeting sex workers in record numbers, while using the Internet as their virtual hunting ground. Many of the victims, often referred to as the “Missing Missing,” are never accounted for, and their murders are far less likely to be solved.

This gripping eight-episode series is a deep-dive into a world of serial murder rarely seen before, going beyond pop-culture stereotypes to expose a real-life American nightmare. However, with the help of Websleuths.com and data journalists, Zeman and Mills learn that everyday citizens can make a difference — by uncovering clues that police cannot, in hopes that one day “The Killing Season” will end.

“The Killing Season” is produced for A&E Network by Jigsaw Productions and Gigantic Pictures. The series is directed by Joshua Zeman. Executive producers for Jigsaw Productions are Alex Gibney, Joshua Zeman, Rachel Mills, Stacey Offman, and Dave Snyder, and co-executive producers are Brad Hebert, Richard Perello, and showrunner Ben Parry. Executive producers for A&E are Shelly Tatro and Brad Abramson.

Total War: Warhammer – The King and the Warlord (Video Game DLC)

If you’ve been following my coverage of Total War: Warhammer (which of course you have, I’m delightful), then you’ll remember that I really enjoyed The Grim and the Grave. More reasonably priced than Call of the Beastmen, it added a significant amount of game-changing content for just $8. New units, new lords, and just as importantly updates to the UI that were sorely needed. My only criticism was that it made the game feel a little imbalanced, since the changes only applied to the Empire and Vampire Counts. It was hard to get amped for a Dwarf or Greenskin when all the shiny new stuff was in the ‘umies land. I knew that the Dwarf/Greenskin stuff wasn’t far behind, and here it is in the DLC pack The King and the Warlord.

With how much I liked The Grim and the Grave, I was more excited for the new DLC than I generally let myself be. It’s a bit weird to think minor alterations and a few new units can get me more excited than an entire new team, but that’s where I’m at. I thought I knew what to expect with The King and the Warlord. A few new lords, some new units, and some gameplay tweaks. When you’ve put the hundreds of hours into it that I have, any tweak to the core mechanics feels massive. Let me tell you, I was not prepared for what I found in The King and the Warlord.

Loading up the campaign selection screen, I was surprised to find that there were not one, not two, but three new teams to pick from. Previously, your choice of Legendary Lord only affected your starting Lord and units. No matter who you picked (with the exclusion of The Beastmen), you’d start in the same place with the same chapter goals and same victory conditions. Completing various challenges would unlock the remaining Legendary Lords, so your initial choice had little effect outside of the first 100 turns.

The King and the Warlord

Goodbye, free time…

While the teams added in The King and the Warlord are still “Dwarves” and “Greenskins,” they appear now in their own tab on the selection screen. It’s fitting, because the three new teams (including the Bloody Handz from the Wurrzag free DLC) play radically different from their base-game counterparts. First up is Clan Angrund, an ancient Dwarven empire helmed by the legendary Belegar Ironhammer. Embarking on a quest to right his clan’s most ancient Grudge, he sets his sites on the distant and legendary Karak Eight Peaks. His rival, the Goblin Warlord Skarsnik, has similar aims. Once the ruler of Eight Peaks, he seeks to lead his army of Crooked Moon Tribe gobbo’z to kick out da nasty gitz dat took his throne.

Though their objective is similar, playing the two teams is wildly different. The Crooked Moon Tribe is easily the most unique of the special factions, with the total inability to recruit any Orc units until Karak Eight Peaks is reclaimed. This means you have to rely entirely on an army of sneaky, cowardly goblins to serve as your army. This would previously have been a tall order, but the new units fill some holes left by the bigger Greenskin brethren. Squig herds are a more chaotic and destructive warhound, allowing you to soften up your enemy with disposable teeth-waves before engaging with your squishier goblins. But squigs ain’t just for herdin’, as the new Night Goblin Squig Hoppers use the adorable little balls of teeth as mounts. These powerful melee cavalry are fast and nasty, more durable in a fight than the Greenskins other shock cavalry. Lastly, we have the Nasty Skulkers, a melee unit with armor piercing that makes up for the lack of Goblin Great Weapons. Sneaky and totally unarmored, they aren’t much good in a stand up fight, but work as great flanking units to ambush more heavily armored adversaries. Mix this all in with the 40% recruitment/upkeep reduction for the Crooked Moon Tribe, and you have yourself a formidable and relentless force.

The King and the Warlord

Sure, squigs are definitely smaller and goofier looking than horses, but they definitely win in the teeth-to-bodymass ratio.

On the flip side, Clan Angrund has an uphill battle. We all know Dwarves to be a grumbly bunch, and they are none too happy about their beloved Karak Eight Peaks being under the boot of foul goblins. While Skarsnik enjoys a 40% cost reduction for his little green cannon fodder, Belegar Ironhammer has to deal with a 50% cost increase until Eight Peaks is recaptured. Yes, 50%. So while Skarsnik is running around, Waaagh!-ing it up with a bunch of cheap little assholes, Belegar is trying to scrape together enough gold to just recruit another Quarreller without going bankrupt. All is not lost, however, as Belegar starts with four level 6 ancestors so savage that even Wurrzag would blush. These ancestors are hero units (2 Thanes, a Runelord, and a Master Engineer) with the boost of being Ethereal and completely un-assassinateable. Feel free to run around the map and perform actions with impunity. In battle, these Heroes are devastating. I’m normally cautious with my Heroes, but after the first time one of my thanes took out three Orc Boyz squads by himself, I got a little more liberal with their deployment.

The King and the Warlord

If you thought you were tired of the dated and poorly implemented Agent system before, just wait until these immortal fucks come waltzing through your land.

So I’ve said a lot about this Karak Eight Peaks, but what exactly is it? Well, it’s always been there, as a massive 4 town province in the northern Greenskin territory. It was already a high value target due to its rich mines and natural barriers. Once you hold Karak Eight Peaks, it’s very hard to lose it. Capturing it for either the Crooked Moon Tribe or Clan Angrund is a massive deal, and not just because of how valuable the land is. Each team can build a special building in the capitol, which gives massive local and global buffs. This is even more important for Belegar, as both removes his 50% cost increase and confers a massive global bonus: 100 unit experience a turn, +5 to recruited lord levels, +5 happiness, and +10 leadership vs Greenskins. Coupled with the fact that the final version of the special capitol building gives magical weapons and all kinds of other stuff, it’s a big step toward making your empire the dominant in the land.

To give you some perspective, neither team starts even close to Karak Eight Peaks. Skarsnik and Belegar start on the complete opposite side of the map, with Belegar being only slightly closer. You’ll have to make your way through Border Princes, Dwarf clans, Greenskin outposts, and finally the heart of the Greenskin and Dwarf empire to get there. It’s a long, hard battle, and very different from the typical “expand slowly outwards” style of the typical Total War: Warhammer team. This specific distant objective is worth extending for. You’ll often pass up decent juicy local targets because you just can’t waste the time. This is a race to the finish, and whoever gets there first reaps massive reward. It’s a huge change of pace and focus, and is worthy of their categorization as different teams.

“Ted, this all sounds amazing, and you described it so well with so much entertaining verbiage. But who is this Wurrzag guy you seem to be ignoring?” Well, just like The Grim and the Grave, The King and the Warlord comes bundled with a pack of free DLC titled Wurrzag. The previous package gave us Vlad von Carstein, an unrepentant slaughter machine that made Manfred look like a pansy. Well, keeping with the new trend of separate teams, this time we get Wurrzag and his savage orcs. Wurrzag is da wierdest of da boyz, and some say he speakz fo’ mork and gork ‘imself. He’s probably also the most adorable orc of all time, as he simply refuses to stop dancing no matter the situation.

wurrzag-dance

He’s just so happy to be gorkin and morkin about.

Wurrzag and his Bloody Handz start out in the Western Badlands, an area of orcish territory far to the south. This is an area that normally is completely dominated by the Top Knotz by the time you get there, but now Wurrzag is here to give dem a run fo’ der teef. It’s a hard start that immediately puts them at odds with not only the local Greenskin tribes, but also the Border Princes and (of course) the Dwarves. Wurrzag is no pushover, serving as a capable melee unit and incredibly powerful caster. Backing him up are his Savage Orcs, which he can recruit from anywhere and receive a powerful charge and defensive bonus.

As much as I enjoy playing as a mad savage, the Wurrzag DLC falls a few steps short. Sure, I start in a new place and get better Savage Orcs, but for some reason he’s not listed as a “Savage Orc” tribe. This is important for confederations, as the Greenskins and Savage Orcs are two different teams. I wanted to try to make alliances with my fellow savages against the Greenskin tribes, but alas this would not be so. It allows you to still confederate with the Greenskins, but I would have much prefered a wildly different experience like those offered by Clan Agrund and the Crooked Moon Tribe. Also, as cool as Savage Orcs are, they just don’t constitute a big of enough alteration to really feel meaningful. It’s four units in total, none of which are more interesting than “big guy with axe.”

Wurrzag

To be fair, warpaint and big axes usually are enough for Wurrzag

It’s also really easy to miss the new Chaos units, as they are hidden in italicized text at the very bottom of the Wurrzag DLC description. Chaos gets the Marauder Horsemasters, Feral Manticores, and Aspiring Champions. The Marauder Horsemasters are a new tier of skirmish cavalry, giving a bit more range and punch to the Chaos roster. Feral Manticore are monstrous flying units, granting a unique mobile juggernaut to the already terrifying melee line. The Aspiring Champions are the most interesting new unit, as the individual members of the paltry 12 man squad are more individually powerful than Chosen. A high risk, high reward unit, they can just as easily turn the tide of a battle as be overrun.

The criticisms I have for the new stuff is scant and minor. The new Dwarf units are kind of lame, with the Rangers and Bolt Throwers being outcasts in the roster. Rangers are a skirmish/flanker—which the Dwarves were previously lacking—in an army with almost zero mobility. Sure, the option is nice, but it goes against the Dwarf battle plan of making an impenetrable line. Bolt Throwers are okay, providing a cheap and early alternative to cannons for single target damage. They can take down Giants, but by the time you need them you should already have the more efficient Cannons.

Overall, the amount of content being delivered in The King and the Warlord is insane. It’s hard to put a value on free DLC, so I’m just going to consider all of this one package. You have new ways to play Dwarves, Greenskins, and Chaos. Even if the new units can be mediocre, the new ways to play offer dozens of hours of content. This is not just a pack of units, but a fundamental shift in how they are designing content. As a pack of toys for me to play with, it’s impossible to put down. As a herald of things to come, this is incredibly promising. As $8, it’s simply unmissable.

Boo, Bitches! A Madea Halloween Scares Off Ouija: Origin of Evil

For true horror fans, the scariest thing at the box office this Halloween season is hearing that Tyler Perry just became the king of the holiday. Or should we say that Madea just became the queen? Either way, “Boo, bitches!

Let us begin with the week’s genuine horror offering and, really and truly, one of the only theatrically-released horror flicks this entire Halloween season. Has anyone actually tried asking Hollywood insiders why the month of October seems to scare them off from releasing bona fide horror films? You would think these four weeks would be the boom period for big screen fright flicks; yet, it seems like August/September, January/February, and early spring have become the go-to months for scary movies. Even the selection of VOD horror offerings this particular October feels weak compared to some previous Halloween seasons.

The original Ouija from 2014 opened to terrible reviews and over $19 million its first weekend. Mike Flanagan’s prequel Ouija: Origin of Evil is over 80% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, garnered rave reviews from just about every major horror site, yet only opened to $13 million, just narrowly edging out Ben Affleck’s autistic assassin flick The Accountant for third place by a mere $34,000, so reports Box Office Mojo.

The real kicker, however, is the dreaded Cinemascore; whoever these people are they poll gave Origin of Evil a “C” – exactly the same underwhelming response they gave the much-maligned first film.

The good news is that $13 million is still a solid opening for a low budget horror flick, and even if it grosses less overall than its predecessor, it is still all but assured to turn a profit for Universal. Origin of Evil opened #1 in Mexico and several Central and South American markets. Good money – just not Madea money.

Boo! A Madea Halloween halloween2 (1)

In the US of A, the box office this weekend belonged in a big way to Boo! A Madea Halloween. Tyler Perry’s Halloween-themed comedy took #1 with a whopping $27.6 million. Not even Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher sequel could stop the Madea-naught. Audiences also rewarded Tyler Perry’s odd mix of bawdy humor and Christian moralizing with an “A” Cinemascore, so unless Tom Hanks’ Inferno opens huge, we could be looking at Boo! dominating Halloween weekend as well.

This also guarantees more Madea movies to come. I’m holding out hope for The Madea Chainsaw Massacre, Madea: Origin of Evil, Boom! A Madea Fourth of July, Bram Stoker’s Madeula, 3-MadDea, Madea and the Beast, It’s a Madea Madea Madea Madea World, Madea Comes to Frogtown, or Lamberto Bava’s Madeamons.

Unless you want to try and count the supernatural leanings of Doctor Strange and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them as horror, the genre doesn’t return to the big screen until Aaron Eckhart battles demons in Incarnate on December 2nd.

New Writer Found for Clive Barker’s Weaveworld TV Adaptation

The CW continues to fill out its slate of genre programming as Deadline is reporting that the network has set a new writer for “Weaveworld,” its drama series project based on the 1987 dark fantasy novel by Clive Barker (Hellraiser).

Josh Stolberg (Piranha 3D, Crawlspace, Good Luck Chuck) has come on board to write the adaptation, which he will also executive produce alongside Barker and Angela Mancuso for CBS TV Studios.

“Weaveworld” has been a priority for The CW. The network first took a stab at a series based on Barker’s book last season with the genre filmmaker and Mancuso executive producing through CBS Studios and Jack Kenny writing. While the script did not go to pilot, CW brass remained high on the title, earmarking it for redevelopment.

In the new take on “Weaveworld,” two ordinary people find themselves on a quest to find and protect a magical realm and ultimately to save all of humanity from an evil force.

For decades “Weaveworld” had been considered too hard to adapt for TV because of its scope and settings that would require extensive use of special effects. That is something the current technology can accomplish on a TV budget, including at a network like The CW, as evident by shows like “Arrow” and “The Flash.” There have been multiple attempts at a “Weaveworld” miniseries in the past two decades, including by Showtime.

More as it comes.
