Back in mid-December, The Paley Center for Media announced the first three shows that will be a part of PaleyFest LA 2017; and now, in a “Saturday Surprise,” they’ve unveiled the full lineup.  Of note to us is “The Walking Dead,” which is kicking things off on March 17th, joining “Westworld” on the 25th and “American Horror Story: Roanoke,” which closes out the event on the 26th.

The only other horror-ish show included in the new batch is “Orphan Black” on March 23rd; but if you’re a fan of The CW’s superhero series “Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Supergirl,” and “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” you’ll want to mark your calendar for March 18th, which is when all four descend on Los Angeles.

The Paley Center for Media’s 34th annual PaleyFest LA, also referred to as the William S. Paley Television Festival, returns to the Dolby Theatre March 17-26, 2017. Trollhunters Meets Stranger Things in Official Mashup Video

Although it was released towards the end of December, Guillermo del Toro’s DreamWorks collaboration “Trollhunters” was one of the biggest shows of 2016, and Netflix sure ain’t gonna let you forget it. They’ve released a video on their official YouTube channel that serves as a comedic mashup between “Trollhunters” and the service’s other hit show of last year, “Stranger Things”; and believe me… it has to be seen to be believed.

Both shows can now be viewed on Netflix, and we can’t recommend them enough.

About “Trollhunters”:
From the limitless imagination of acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes a tale of two worlds set to collide in the epic saga “Trollhunters.” When ordinary teenager Jim Lake, Jr., stumbles upon a mystical amulet on his way to school one morning, he inadvertently discovers an extraordinary secret civilization of mighty trolls beneath his small town of Arcadia. Suddenly destined to play a crucial role in an ancient battle of good and evil, Jim is determined to save the world – right after gym class.

A must-see viewing event for the entire family, “Trollhunters” will bring viewers of all ages around the globe into the rich and creative world of this all-new Netflix original series, which premiered worldwide December 23, 2016, and consists of 26 episodes.

Voice talent includes Kelsey Grammer (“The Simpsons,” X-Men: The Last Stand), Ron Perlman (Hellboy, “Adventure Time”), Steven Yeun (“The Walking Dead”), and Anton Yelchin (Star Trek Beyond). “Trollhunters” is created and executive produced by Guillermo del Toro (Crimson Peak, Hellboy). Marc Guggenheim (TV’s “Arrow,” “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow”), Rodrigo Blaas (animator Up, Brave, WALL•E), Christina Steinberg (Rise of the Guardians), and Chad Hammes (Dragons: Race to the Edge”) serve as executive producers. Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman are co-executive producers.

Underworld: Blood Wars (2017)

Underworld Blood WarsStarring Kate Beckinsale, Theo James, Charles Dance, Lara Pulver, Tobias Menzies, Clementine Nicholson, Bradley James

Directed by Anna Foerster

Underworld: Blood Wars is the fifth and potentially final movie in the series. It’s too short, as the last film in the series also was, skipping over important pieces of resolution towards the end, but otherwise serves as an appropriate denouement.

As it opens, Selene (Beckinsale) is on the run from just about everyone. The remaining vampire clans hate her for killing elders Viktor and Marcus. The lycans hate her because of her prominence as a Death Dealer, sending many wolves to the grave. Humans may still want her dead, too, although the mass extermination that opened Underworld: Awakening isn’t touched upon here.

The vampires have begun rebuilding, although the purge has left them severely weakened and on the brink of extinction. To make matters worse, the lycans have regrouped under the leadership of Marius (Menzies) and are planning one final attack to finish them once and for all. The coven leader, Semira (Pulver), lures a reluctant Selene out of hiding in order to train an army of new recruits for one last battle.

I found Blood Wars unpredictable on more than one occasion (I also abstained from watching the last trailer, which was incredibly spoilery). Some of its developments are surprising, and it’s to the film’s credit that it juggles quite a few characters (many of them new) with ease. It’s most similar to Len Wiseman’s original Underworld in that sense. It cares about this world and its history, spending an admirable amount of time putting new players on the board while shuffling established ones to keep fans on their toes.

Because of this, I really enjoyed Blood Wars. Awakening was a fun action movie that was too worried about slowing down for a second in order to offer a substantial story. It was disappointing to wait six years for another Selene adventure so half-baked. But Blood Wars understands why the franchise garners its loyal following and is genuinely interested in expanding the mythos through new characters and possibilities. It’s the first time since the original that a Selene movie isn’t “The Selene Show.” She’s a great character and Blood Wars makes appropriate use of her, but others share significance and spotlight this time, and it’s most welcome.

Blood Wars splits its focus so Theo James’ David is as important as Selene. Indebted to her after Awakening’s events, he’s sent into the field to bring her in to help the vampires. He goes from a throwaway character (in Awakening) to one of the most important in a way that bridges earlier movies with the most recent ones. He shares many scenes with Charles Dance, whose return lends this endeavor more weight and authority. Dance is joined by another “Game of Thrones” alum, Tobias Menzies (Lord Edmure Tully himself) as the new lycan boss, Marius.

Marius isn’t as developed as Underworld’s previous lycan leader, but like Michael Sheen’s Lucian, Menzies is sympathetic about his ruthlessness. We never come to like him as much as Lucian, but there’s a sense of remorse in his villainy that feels true to the series.

Finally, Lara Pulver channels Eva Green as the vampire leader. She’s very fun to watch and steals every scene she’s in. I don’t want to compare her to Bill Nighy’s Viktor, except to say she strikes a similar combination of wicked camp without the obviousness. Other actors, like Clementine Nicholson and Bradley James, have little to do but are no less welcome. For the first time since the original, Underworld is ripe with ancillary characters that could be fun to watch in future iterations.

Blood Wars is also like the original Underworld in that it never pulls off a really great action sequence. Director Anna Foerster comes from television, and Blood Wars shows it. The opening motorcycle chase and ensuing fight are wasted, and the larger scale conflicts never come alive with the necessary excitement. They’re not bad, just perfunctory. Selene goes Thunderdome with a new Death Dealer in the best bit, although the close quarters throwdown ends just as it’s getting interesting. And the Selene versus Marius battle is rousing, if a little too fast. I can promise you I won’t see a better sight at the movies all year (or ever) than the lanky Beckinsale battling a hulking lycan on a frozen lake, though.

And Foerster has strengths that benefit Blood Wars. Selene is nearly broken, having lost everything throughout the last three movies, and a considerable chunk of her arc is charting how she deals with that. She spends her life on the run, having sent her vampire/lycan daughter into exile without knowing where (so her enemies can’t use her blood to find her), and that decision leaves her devastated. When she’s cornered by a pack of lycans, she’s exhausted; and the anguish is all over Beckinsale’s face. This is no longer the character we met in the first movie who loves her job and relishes her duty. Beckinsale isn’t afraid to go vulnerable with Selene, and she crafts a better character the more she does it. Critics moan about her “slumming it” inside this long-running franchise, overlooking the good and subtle work she does with Selene every time.

Blood Wars marks the first time none of the original writers have been involved in the writing. Cory Goodman’s script moves the series into mystical territory with the addition of a new Nordic Coven, vampires living in isolation on the edges of civilization. They’ve sat out the entirety of the Vampire and Lycan War, although it’s never made clear why. Nor is it explained how this clan possesses the ability to appear and disappear at will. The vampires of Underworld were brought into existence through genetic mutation, so this deliberately mystical infusion is a big step forward.

Anna Foerster has alluded to a longer cut of Blood Wars, and the movie would benefit. Fans of the series should be happy, despite some choppy character bits and a finale where major issues are resolved with minor emphasis and a little voiceover narration. The final battle is resolved in a laughable way (I’ll never stop chuckling at the way those lycans just turn around and shuffle off), but it works because the major villains are still handed cathartic action movie defeats. Blood Wars is a worthy addition to the franchise and an even better conclusion for Selene. It captures the spirit of the original while offering fun bursts of action, and Kate Beckinsale has never been better. What more can you ask for?

TCA Winter 2017: Supernatural Gets an Early Renewal; Constantine Returning as Animated Series on CW Seed

The Television Critics Association’s Winter 2017 Press Tour is under way in Pasadena, CA; and The CW came out of the gate strong with early renewals for seven of its primetime series for the 2017-2018 season, including fan (and Dread Central) favorite “Supernatural.” The announcement was made by Mark Pedowitz, President, The CW.

Along with “Supernatural’s” upcoming 13th(!) season, which so far has a 13-episode commitment, the series being ordered for the 2017-2018 season include “Arrow” (Season 6), “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” (Season 3), “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” (Season 3), “The Flash” (Season 4), “Jane the Virgin” (Season 4), and “Supergirl” (Season 3). Specific premiere dates for each will be announced at a later time.

“Over the past several seasons, The CW has built a schedule of proven performers, from our lineup of DC superheroes to critically acclaimed comedies to sci-fi dramas,” said Pedowitz. “Early pickups of these seven series now allow our producers to plan ahead for next season and gives us a solid base to build on for next season, with original scripted series to roll out all year long.”

And that’s not all… “Constantine” star Matt Ryan is returning to voice the character for a new animated series that will run on CW Seed, the network’s digital home for comedy, animation, and hundreds of hours of modern classics, where the 13-episode live action “Constantine” (formerly on NBC) can also be found.

The animated series will be produced by Greg Berlanti (“Arrow,” “The Flash”) and consist of five or six 10-minute episodes that will premiere during the 2017-18 TV season. IGN got hold of some artwork and a few more details:

Although Ryan reprised the role in Season 4 of “Arrow,” Pedowitz said there are no plans for him to return anytime soon. “At this point in time, there are no plans to,” he said. “I would love to have Matt. I think that was a great episode in Season 4. Matt adds a dimension to the show as the character… We look at CW Seed as an extension. It’s great to have ‘Constantine.’ It’s a great message to everybody… ‘Come to CW Seed, and don’t be bored.'”

Berlanti and David Goyer, who was a co-creator of the show for NBC originally, have just started working on the new series in the past few weeks. Pedowitz said there haven’t been discussions of which live action supporting characters may or may not be back for the new show or how this version will connect back to the live action storylines he’s been a part of.

Stay tuned for more as it comes!

James Bickert is a filmmaker keeping the spirit of authentic Grindhouse-era exploitation alive and well in the modern era. His flicks might be dirty, sleazy and nasty, but they’re also fun, full of laughs and made with heart and passion, born out of love for the type of cult cinema only really horror hounds and action nuts tend to appreciate.

His latest feature, Frankenstein Created Bikers, is finally coming to Blu-ray and DVD for US residents, but the project needs our help to ensure the release gets the best treatment it deserves.

The film – which follows an undead outlaw biker who finds himself addicted to a diabolical substance and hunted by a grenade-tossing sexy assassin, bounty hunters, the law, a rival biker gang gang, sordid mutations and a hit squad of topless strippers – has won multiple awards and plaudits, and has been a huge hit among indie horror aficionados.

The Kickstarter campaign has already smashed its funding goal of $1000 dollars, but if it reaches $2000 (which it looks set to do) then the release will come stacked with more special features – over four hours worth to be exact.

By pre-ordering your copy now for $20 bucks, you’ll ultimately be picking up a collector’s edition of the release, as when it goes on general sale to the rest of the world chances are it will only be available as a standard release – and it’ll more expensive in the hands of retailers.  You have just under two weeks to pre-order the ultimate copy for cheaper and receive it by Feb 2017.

Chances are if you’re reading about this movie then you’re already aware of its reputation. If not, I highly suggest checking it out, as well as Bickert’s previous film Dear God No! (2011).

You can stay up to date with news via their Facebook page as well.

Thomas Perrett’s Commune has already been a force to be reckoned with on the film fest circuit, and in 2017 it’s heading back out on the road, with two upcoming dates in the U.K. We have some details and stills for you plus the film’s trailer.

The creepy, metaphysical short was shot in an actual abandoned East London commune. Tom Weller and Robin King star.

During its previous screenings at over a dozen festivals worldwide, the film picked up Best Horror Short at the London Independent Film Festival (world premiere) and the Silver Award at the Spotlight Horror Awards in Atlanta, Georgia.

British filmmaker Perrett has been a freelance editor in London for over a decade. When he recently discovered an unusual location, he was inspired to direct again. Fifteen years after his first film, Hindsight, was released, Perrett helmed his second.

“Commune came about after I attended a Halloween party held at a dilapidated 1930’s house in North London that would eventually serve as the creepy setting for my film. The building was a strange place, full of belongings and personal effects from a Jewish family that had long vacated. The more I sifted through the rooms, the stranger it felt to have our hands in someone else’s life; and the weird feeling of intruding was very strong, as if the owners could return at any point,” explains Perrett

This unique scary tale continues to travel the film festival circuit with more upcoming screenings in the new year, beginning with:

January 13th at 11:00pm – London Short Film Festival, London, U.K.
January 21st at 5:30pm – Horror on Sea Film Festival, Essex, U.K.

Written, produced, directed, and edited by Thomas Perrett, Commune unites a handful of creatives collected by Perrett during his time as an editor in London’s Soho. It’s lensed by Tim Gee, graded by Andrew Daniel, and sound designed by Robin Green, with an original score composed by Mike Payne.

Synopsis:
Tom (Weller) is a lonely man who takes a job as the guardian of a rundown London house. Charged with keeping the property secure, he soon realizes that it’s not the building that needs protecting, but himself. A malevolent dark cult from the past resides within the walls. and they are hunting for new members.

We’ve heard far too many true life stories of people going missing in the Florida Everglades, which I guess makes them the ideal setting for the upcoming horror film The Everglades Killings. Get lost in the Everglades yourself on the film’s Facebook account and official website.

From the Press Release:
It’s March in South Florida. The beach towns are flush with young people looking for action and excitement.

For one unlucky group of thrill-seeking spring breakers, their adventure leads to the black waters of the Florida Everglades – a place with mosquitoes the size of birds, snakes as long as school busses and tens of thousands of flesh-ripping alligators.

But beyond the scope of the traditional predators famous for keeping the glades wild is another phenomenon – one with two legs and an insatiable thirst for killing.

One of my favorite things to do in life is read short stories around the campfire, and with Twisted 50 we get 50 fantastic short stories from 50 disturbed voices of modern horror just for that special tale of woe when the dark is at its darkest and the warmth of the campfire is the only light you see at the end of the tunnel.

Twisted 50: Volume One is a perfect storm of contemporary horror literature.  Reading it is like attending a late night secret party where you know around each turn is something unexpected, exotic, and deliciously seductive.

While I enjoyed the majority of these stories, there were a few that I felt lacked in grabbing hold of me, but who’s to say that those stories won’t grab the next reader?  To each his own.

There’s something for everyone in Twisted 50; it’s well worth adding to your collection.

Toho’s Godzilla made his triumphant comeback in 2016 and is a sequel is bound to happen given its success. Legendary’s iteration of the King of the Monsters will be gracing our screens once again next year. It’s a great time to be a giant monster movie fan in general; The Great Wall is just over a month away, with Kong: Skull Island following a month later. And let us not forget the Pacific Rim sequel also scheduled for 2018 – and that’s not to mention upcoming delights like Colossal (2016), Okja (2017) and the long-planned Gamera reboot at some point (hopefully soon).

However, on top of those big releases, we can also look forward to Godzilla: Heritage – a fan film from New York based filmmakers Timothy Schiefer and Greg Graves. As you’ll see from the images below, it looks absolutely wonderful – and impressive for a crowdfunded fan-tailored labor of love made for under $20,000 dollars.

The images, released via the awesome G-fan Facebook group THE GODZILLA GROUP, are from an upcoming 20-minute preview of the film set to be released in the near future.

Out of all three seasons of “From Dusk Till Dawn” this third one really hit its stride as it brims with cool monsters, insane gore, and rich lore! Missed it? Don’t worry! It’s officially headed home.

From the Press Release:
On February 7, home audiences will be whisked deep into the vortex of a culebra underworld on the verge exploding in “From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series – Season Three”. Across 10 new horror-packed episodes, MIRAMAX and El Rey’s fan-favorite, supernatural crime saga returns on loaded Blu-ray and DVD, available only from Entertainment One. Both sets include hours of specially-produced extras including audio commentary with the cast & crew, featurettes including “Season 3 Catch Up,” “Inside the Episodes,” “Season 3 Best Kills,” “Evolution of a Fight Scenes” and much more!

Season three of “From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series,” based on Robert Rodriguez’s original film, follows Seth and Richie as they continue to fight their way through the chilling world of culebras, the vampire-snake hybrids that control hidden empires in Texas and Mexico. Once the baddest outlaws in the land, the Gecko brothers made a run for the Border two years ago to save their lives — and their fortune. After stumbling into a bar full of bloodsuckers and bandits, they encountered the vampire goddess Santánico, joining her cause to settle an old score, and it won them a place in the culebra world. Now that world is on the verge of violent and destructive explosion as new enemies hell-bent on domination gather to take them down. But, in typical Gecko fashion, Seth and Richie assemble an unlikely crew (some new, some old) to take on the forces of hell.

Season three features a returning ensemble cast including D.J. Cotrona (Dear John, G.I. Joe: Retaliation), Zane Holtz (Holes, The Perks of Being a Wallflower), Eiza González, Jesse Garcia, Madison Davenport, Brandon Soo Hoo, Emily Rios and Jake Busey. New cast joining the third season are: Ana de la Reguera (“Jane the Virgin”, “Narcos”) who will have a recurring role as Lord Venganza Verdugo, one of the seven remaining culebra Lords; Marko Zaror (“Machete Kills”) as Zolo, an Aztec warrior trained in Hell; Tom Savini (“Friday the 13th“, “From Dusk Till Dawn”) as Burt, a retired demon hunter who smokes more medical marijuana than he sells; Maurice Compte (“Breaking Bad”, “Narcos”) as Brasa, a mysterious Rasputin-like figure who takes on the Gecko brothers; and Nicky Whelan (“House of Lies”, “The Wedding Ringer”).

Aside from the blu-ray and DVD releases, Season Three is also available via Digital HD through all leading platforms including iTunes, Amazon, Fandango Now, Google Play, Microsoft, Sony Playstation and Vudu.

From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series is produced by MIRAMAX in association with Rodriguez International Pictures, FactoryMade Ventures and Sugarcane Entertainment.
