The film is currently in release this month in the US and Canada in cinemas and across all platforms. The cast of ARBOR DEMON includes Jake Busey (IDENTITY, STARSHIP TROOPERS, ENEMY OF THE STATE), Fiona Dourif (CURSE OF CHUCKY, THE MASTER, FEAR CLINIC, THE MESSENGER), and Kevin Ryan (PADDY’S IN THE BOOT, “COPPER,” LAREDO). Veteran horror heavyweights producers Warren Ostergard (CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES, FEAR CLINIC) and Marcel Sarmiento (DEADGIRL, V/H/S VIRAL) set the aggregate box office for the ARBOR DEMON team at over a hundred million dollars (US).

“Arbor Demon is one of those films horror lovers must see and won’t ever forget,” says Film Mode Entertainment’s President, Clay Epstein. “These filmmakers are masters at the art of terrifying throngs of horror fans. Arbor Demon is sure to be a success worldwide due to its universal theme of entrapment, and a wallop of an ending.”

ARBOR DEMON (formerly known as Enclosure [review]) has gained major audience and industry traction since it premiered in Cannes in 2016. ARBOR DEMON is about a woman with a dark secret who goes on a camping trip with her husband hoping the serene setting will help her summon the courage to confide in him. Before she is able, a group of nearby hunters are slaughtered by an unknown force. With a shapeless predator roaming the forest, the couple’s too terrified to emerge from their tent. Is the evil outside trying to get in, or is it something they have spawned from inside their enclosure?

Film Mode Entertainment is handling worldwide rights on the film and will be presenting the film for distributors at EFM in Berlin.

Okay, so dogs of war sounds way more intimidating than Hounds of Love, but sometimes the latter can surprise you! Case in point…

From the Press Release:
Gunpowder & Sky Distribution announced today that HOUNDS OF LOVE, the bold debut film from writer/director Ben Young, is set to open in theaters May 12, 2017, following its North American Premiere at the 2017 SXSW Film Festival.

In suburban Perth during the mid 1980s, people are unaware that women are disappearing at the hands of serial killer couple John and Evelyn White. After an innocent lapse in judgment, Vicki Maloney is randomly abducted by the disturbed couple. With her murder imminent, Vicki realizes she must find a way to drive a wedge between Evelyn and John if she is to survive. Hounds of Love is an exercise in expertly-crafted tension, offering a bold, challenging debut from writer/director Ben Young.

HOunds of Love HOunds of Love HOunds of Love HOunds of Love

“I was drawn to the idea of Hounds of Love after reading a true crime book about female serial killers,” said filmmaker Ben Young. “It triggered a strong memory of fear from my childhood that was instilled by my parents as a result of crimes committed by a serial killer couple.”

Starring Emma Booth, Stephen Curry, and Ashleigh Cummings, HOUNDS OF LOVE had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where Ashleigh Cummings took home the award for Best Actress in a Debut Film. It also garnered a Best Director award for Ben Young and Best Actress award for Emma Booth at the Brussels International Film Festival.

“Ben has created a relentlessly tense debut film and made his mark as a writer-director to watch,” said G&S’s Hake Hanly. “Our whole team was floored by the strength of Ben’s vision and his unique character-driven twist on the serial killer film. The cast delivers brave performances that resonate long after the film has ended.”

Hounds of Love was written and directed by Ben Young and produced by Melissa Kelly. The deal was negotiated by Jake Hanly of Gunpowder & Sky Distribution and Eric Schnedecker of Urban Distribution International.

More casting news is here for the latest flick to venture into video game territory, Rampage. According to THR both Joe Manganiello and Marley Shelton are in line to tango with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and three giant-sized bad hombres!

Johnson will play an animal-loving hero who is the world’s only hope, while Naomie Harris, the Oscar-nominated Moonlight actress, is on board as a geneticist with a moral streak. If signed, Manganiello (pictured) will portray the leader of a private military group and Shelton will play a scientist and astronaut.

Brad Peyton is directing Rampage, which reunites Johnson, Peyton and producer Beau Flynn, the team behind San Andreas and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

Like the video game, the film will feature three creatures — a monstrously transformed gorilla, lizard and wolf — who wreak havoc on North American cities and landmarks.

Ryan Engle wrote the original draft, with work done by Carlton Cuse and Ryan Condal. Adam Sztykiel did the most current revisions.

Rampage is set to release April 20, 2018.

Star Wars: The Screaming Citadel Horror Comic Coming This Year

$

Horror stories set in the Star Wars galaxy are nothing new. First we had the young readers Galaxy of Fear novels back in 1997 (think Goosebumps in space) and then there was Joe Schreiber’s three adult horror novels which started with 2009’s Death Troopers.

The galaxy far, far away will soon be subjected to an all new tale of horror with the 5-part series The Screaming Citadel, in which Luke and the gang get more than they bargained for when they investigate a decrepit castle located on the edge of space. Jason Aaron, who is writing alongside Kieron Gillen, described it as being “very much a Star Wars gothic-horror story” in an interview with Star Wars.com. When asked specifically about how the horror elements would factor in, he said the following:

Kieron Gillen: As you say, Star Wars is a genre mash. It takes from a load of sources and you can see what they’re doing, and the whole entire point is having that integrate. The trick is, we’re going to do this quite-hard twist, as in we’re going to lean very much to this particular genre that we haven’t seen in Star Wars before, and that’s a big part of the appeal. “Let’s do a horror story, and let’s do a horror story with this level of gothic fantasy to it.” It pretty much starts in a bar, which is as Star Wars as it gets. So it’s very grounded, we recognize it’s Star Wars. Then we travel with Luke and Aphra, and we go to this place. It’s instantly a Star Wars take on the trope of doing a village, and there’s a really weird castle up on the hill and it’s a bit suspicious, and they arrive there and [the people] seem very friendly but something is definitely off. You know what I mean? You understand the tropes, then you go, “Okay, how can we make them feel like Star Wars?” That’s putting the twist on it. In terms of the horror aspects of the book, which I’m being a bit sheepish around, it’s like, “How can get something that feels like that, but then also, definitely, is not just doing that in Star Wars.” It’s sort of like Aphra with the Indiana Jones influence. It’s like, “Yeah, I can see what this is like, but it’s also not like that.” If the work isn’t transformational, it’s pointless doing.

The Screaming Citadel will form part of the new canon Star Wars continuity, as Disney took it upon themselves to retcon the Legends timeline. It will begin with a self titled one-shot in May before continuing in Star Wars #31, Doctor Aphra #7, and subsequent issues.

Sony Pushes Goosebumps 2 Several Months

You know what? Now would usually be the time when we’d lament about yet another studio pushing yet another movie’s release date back, but after the latest Halloween news, ain’t nobody gonna break our stride!

Word has come that Sony Pictures has pushed Goosebumps 2, which was originally slated for release on January 26, 2018, all the way back to September 21, 2018. Hey, maybe it needed more time in the oven. As long as it’s as good as the original, we’re cool!

Director Rob Letterman and writer Darren Lemke are back, and Deborah Forte and Neal H. Moritz are returning as producers.

Goosebumps was a solid performer for the studio, generating $80 million domestically and another $77 million internationally on a budget of $58 million. The film also has performed well in home entertainment circles.

The movie was the climax of an 18-year journey to adapt the best-selling book series by R.L. Stine, which was first set up at Fox in 1998 before moving to Sony in 2008. One of the keys of cracking the adaptation included making Stine a character and tackling not just one story but populating the film with a host of his horror creations.

Jack Black portrayed Stine in Goosebumps, and the word is he’ll be back as well. Keep it locked here for more as it comes.

Murder on the Dance Floor Again in Party Hard 2

If you never played the original Party Hard, it was a slasher game about a serial killer in a hockey mask who slaughters a bunch of party goers after he becomes fed up with their loud music and rowdiness. Think of it as Friday the 13th with 8-bit visuals, and if that sounds agreeable, you can join the party on Steam.

Publisher tinyBuildGAMES have just released an announcement trailer for the upcoming sequel, in which the hockey mask-clad killer decides to crash his office Christmas party after he doesn’t get his Christmas bonus. As good a reason as any, I suppose.

Commit a literal murder on the dance-floor when Party Hard 2 arrives on Steam this summer.

Nick Damici Talks Stake Land II and More!

His character is fairly silent, ever-so-retrospective, but effectively lethal against those damned vampires. In the Stake Land movie series, he’s known as “Mister,” but his real name is Nick Damici, and we here at Dread Central were lucky enough to snag a few moments with him to discuss the latest entry into the timeline, what he really thinks about the character, and what’s up his sleeve afterwards – sit back, read on and enjoy!

DC: Nick, for the people who might need a bit of a catch-up on the storyline, what’s happening in this chapter, and what’s new this time around with Mister?

ND: It takes place about 5-6 years after the completion of the first film, and Mister’s gone back to fight vamps. Martin went to New Eden and had a child with his wife, and after a tragedy Martin is once again on his own, and he sets out to find Mister. Together they reunite to go out after the vampires responsible for what happened.

DC: This is your second go-around as the character – what is it that speaks to you about him? Do you find portraying this character has both pros and cons?

ND: I love playing him, and the whole aspect of getting to play this kind of cowboy character, and it’s also an interesting world as well – the character’s fun to play, but it’s the whole apocalyptic world that we’re in is what interests me – civilization slowly degrading backwards in time, which is very well what would happen if we took away governments and all the things that sort of hold us together. We’d find it like the Old West and eventually regress back into the Middle Ages and then back into the Stone Age, obviously. Maybe that’s where we belong in the long run – we should have never left.

DC: What can you tell us about the filming – looks as if things got pretty physical for you on set.

ND: Yeah, I’m not a young pup anymore, and it wears me down – it was pretty good, not too bad. We filmed in Saskatchewan – it’s beautiful up there, and we had a lot of stunts to pull off, but nothing that was too outrageous. Hanging on a cross is not a lot of fun, but outside of that it was all right. The fight stuff, I can handle, but they make me look good (laughs).

DC: You’ve not only had your share of roles in the past, but you’ve written and produced as well – any one of those a particular favorite of yours and one that you can see yourself focusing in on as your career goes forward?

ND: Well, I’d love to keep doing all three if I could – writing and acting you can do as long as you want, and the producing thing kind of comes with what I do – they pay you a little more money and give you a bit more power when you call yourself a “producer” . I don’t really know what that means, producing – basically, I’m the creative end of that, and I get the credit for it, so I’ll take it.

DC: Lastly, after the release of Stake Land II, what can fans expect to see from you down the road?

ND: We’ve got the second season of “Hap & Leonard” coming out this March – we’re editing that right now, and it looks great – I think it’s going to be a really good series on Sundance. Outside of that, I’ve got myself a project with Joe Landsdale coming up soon – it’s a movie I’d be acting in from a property of his, so we’ll see if that pans out, and another movie with a guy I met while doing Stake Land II, and he sent me a script that I’m really interested in, so we’re trying to get that up and running. I’m also pitching a detective series of books, based upon a Russian detective book series that was out in the 80’s – it was like, 16 books, so I’m trying to pitch that as well.

Marvelous Mandy (2017)

$

Starring Paula Marcenaro Solinger, Jonathan Stottmann, Ryley Nicole

Directed by Chase Dudley

Talk about looking for love in all the wrong places – Jeezus Christmas, what does someone have to do in order to meet that special someone, and NOT have them turn out to be a completely psychopathic nutbag? Ah well, “caveat emptor” as they say – and while we’re on the subject of “beware before you buy”, those words can certainly apply to Chase Dudley’s film, Marvelous Mandy, and at the risk of sounding too terribly negative…I’m still waiting for that “marvelous” part to show up.

Harvey (Stottmann) is a chap whose love life is in a bit of a holding pattern – his wife left he and his young daughter, Clementine (Kenna Hardin), and Harvey is not only trying to be both a father and mother to his little one, but he’s attempting to fill the void his bride created when she took off. Problem is, Harvey has never been smooth with the words – in fact, he’s downright sad to watch work, and when the day comes that he meets “author” Mandy (Solinger) at a tiny bookstore where she works at, it’s one of those connections you only read about. Okay, I might be embellishing the truth here a bit – you see, Mandy writes the series of out-of-print books that Harvey’s daughter loves, and she’s only too happy to offer them up to him so his daughter can take her mind off of her wayward mother. Oddly enough, Mandy isn’t exactly who she claims to be, and her sanity is as tattered as some of the pages in the old books she sells at the shop…ah to hell with it, no more beating around the bush – Mandy’s nuttier than a squirrel turd, and Harvey’s in entirely the wrong place at the wrong time. She’s already run through a gaggle of male suitors in the past, and our leading man is currently on her radar – what a lucky fella, indeed.

As the movie rolls along, we see Mandy’s unraveling psyche begin to erode even further, and there are bodies to be left in its wake, and even though Solinger and Stottmann more than hold their own in their roles, it’s simply not enough to keep this flick from sinking a slow death, and surprisingly, it’s not the plot that does it in – it’s the technical aspect that murders this movie (bad pun altogether). I’m not sure who gave the ok to ship this film off in the visual state that it’s in, but the audio and video are simply atrocious – muffled sound, horrific editing and lighting problems would be enough to make the casual fan try adjusting the settings on their televisions or laptops, but for an A/V dork like myself, this was straight-up torturous to have to sit through. The gore that was on display did work rather nicely, effectively capturing Mandy’s violent outbreaks, and Dudley was certainly not shy to let the crimson flow freely, but sadly it’s only one step forward, two steps back for this stunted thriller. My advice for those looking for a little crazy with their amour? Step back in time to something like Fatal Attraction, cause this Mandy was far from marvelous, or memorable, or magnificent – you get what I’m saying.

Why Prometheus Deserves a Director’s Cut

$

0

Director’s cuts and extended versions have become sort of a home video marketing gimmick in recent years. More often than not, studios simply throw in a few minutes of extra fat so they can plug an “Unrated Edition” and milk the public’s curiosity for more. But once in awhile, an extended version can yield an entirely different and better film and no director’s work has benefited more from this than Ridley Scott.

Blade Runner, Legend, Kingdom of Heaven, and more recently The Counselor were all films that were blasted upon their initial release and eventually re-evaluated and praised for their alternate cuts on home video. Now with the upcoming release of Alien: Covenant, it’s time to look back at Scott’s most divisive film and why it deserves a new version in the wake of its sequel.

Prometheus is a beautiful picture full of big ideas and interesting additions to the Alien mythos. But it’s also hampered with enough logic issues and convoluted story beats to send the nit-picky “Cinema Sins” generation into overdrive. The worth and meaning of the film has been debated endlessly and is probably the most contentious installment you’ll find in any franchise (some fans even rank it lower than the AVP films, which is certifiably insane).

As an Alien super-fan and Prometheus apologist, I devoured the film’s Blu-ray content that gives a lot of extra insight into the story and the decisions made behind the scenes. It was one of the last great home video releases before studios abandoned the physical media/bonus feature model for quick-and-easy streaming services, and it boasted hours of supplemental material including a making-of documentary longer than the movie itself. More importantly, the disc contains fifteen minutes of deleted scenes, which go a long way towards addressing several of the film’s problems and explain many lingering questions.

While not all of them are necessary, there are several excised moments that feel so integral to the plot, characters and pacing that you have to question the mental state of the people in the edit bay. It’s hard to know if these were the result of tinkering from the studio or Ridley Scott, who has a history of making questionable decisions for his theatrical versions (the initial version of Blade Runner and Legend were the result of the director second guessing himself).

Let’s dive in…

The first major change comes right at the opening of the film. In the theatrical cut, you saw a lone Engineer drink a cup of black goo and scatter his DNA into a waterfall, creating life on Earth. But the extended cut shows him accompanied by several more Engineers in ritualistic garments, who treat him as a sort of “chosen one.” This scene gives us a little more insight into the Engineers and shows that the creation of life was a ceremonial event and not the random act of an individual creature. Not major, but a nice little addition that cleared up some confusion.

Prometheus Deleted Scene

The moment that gets the most ridicule in Prometheus comes during the “hammerpede” attack, when asshole map expert Fitfield and biologist Millburn are taken out by an earthworm mutated by the black goo. This is made all the more preposterous by the fact that Millburn excitedly reaches out to pet the fucking thing, right after a scene where he freaks out over finding some Engineer corpses. It’s a moment so devoid of logic and common sense that it’s become one of the most widely mocked movie scenes on the internet (next to Crystal Skull’s “nuking the fridge.”) But believe it or not, there are deleted moments that actually give motivation this:

While exploring the planet, there’s an excised scene where the company finds one of the live earthworms in the soil (“Our first alien.”) and Millburn excitedly collects it like he’s in love. A later scene in the Engineer ship shows him stumbling onto the shed skin of the mutated worm, where he responds with the same geeky level of glee. These bits may seem minor out of context, but they firmly establish the character as a biologist with a raging hard-on for insects and animals, which actually gives a bit of dark irony to his ridiculous mistake of excitedly trying to grab a hissing worm-snake-penis hybrid.

Prometheus Deleted Scene

Ridley Scott’s commitment to old-fashioned practical effects over digital was one of Prometheus’ main highlights, but there’s one sequence that actually benefits from CGI: Zombie Fitfield’s attack in the cargo bay of the Prometheus:

Two versions of the scene were shot and Scott chose to go with the practical sequence, but this is one time where the CGI version is arguably better. The design clearly shows that the bio-weapon goo that mutated Fitfield shares DNA with the classic xenomorph alien, and he’s much more threatening in this state than with the practical zombie make-up that makes him look like The Toxic Avenger.

When the crew wakes the Engineer from his cryo-sleep in the third act, shit hits the fan pretty quick and a lot of audiences were left scratching their heads why the giant albino suddenly freaks out on the crew. There’s a very important deleted exchange where Peter Weyland goes on an ego-fueled rant (David translating in Engineer speak that he’s an android and his creator has essentially come to this planet saying “I want more life, fucker.”). It’s only after Weyland’s selfish tirade that the creature tears David’s head off and smacks the egomaniacal old bastard around (can you really blame him?). Perhaps Scott or the studio felt that we didn’t need these motivations spelled out for us, but the extended confrontation definitely gives this scene some much-needed build-up and suspense, and explains why the Engineer knows David is an android before he decides to punish his power-hungry creations.

Prometheus Deleted Scene

The biggest and most grievous omission is the final action sequence. In the theatrical cut, the crashed Engineer comes after Shaw and she immediately opens the med bay doors, allowing it to be consumed by a Lovecraftian tentacle monster (this leads to the birth of the first Xenomorph which Covenant already seems to be ignoring). It’s a very quick, anti-climactic beat that doesn’t have much suspense, especially when you compare it to the extended sequence on home video.

In the original cut, the Engineer stalks and chases Shaw through the wreckage of the Prometheus in an incredibly tense standoff where she furiously fights him back with an axe, only releasing the tentacle monster after she’s finally defeated. Chopped (no-pun-intended) by the studio at the last minute, this cut robs Shaw of her big heroine moment and Prometheus of its climax, making the entire film suffer as a result. How effective would Alien have been had Ripley blasted the creature out the airlock two seconds after finding it in the escape pod?

Prometheus Deleted Scene

After the battle, Shaw has a longer discussion with David about the Engineer’s words and we get more insight into their home planet (which David refers to as “Paradise.”) and Shaw’s decision to go there. These bits actually tease Alien: Covenant better and restores some much needed pace to the closing minutes of the film.

Granted, these scenes don’t fix all of Prometheus’ issues: The changes from a direct Alien/Aliens prequel to the setting of LV-223 still feels completely arbitrary and Charlize Theron still only runs in straight lines. But the additional moments and changes really help flesh out Scott’s ambitious film and might even silence some of the detractors.

Sadly, you’ll only find an extended version of Prometheus in the form of internet fan-edits. But it’s high time Ridley Scott and 20th Century Fox reevaluate a new cut of the film, especially in the wake of Alien: Covenant’s release (or at least hire a producer like Lauzirika who oversaw Blade Runner: The Final Cut). Much like the Alien 3: Extended Version, which gave David Fincher’s troubled movie a newfound life and appreciation, a director’s cut of Prometheus would go a long way towards exposing the diamond in the rough.

About “The Walking Dead” Season 7B:
The highly anticipated mid-season premiere of the #1 show in all of television among adults 18-49, AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” launches Sunday, February 12th, at 9:00 PM ET/PT. In the debut episode, #7.09, “Rock in the Road,” Rick and the group are led to a new community where they are introduced to its inhabitants and ruler. A familiar face resurfaces.

The first half of Season 7 saw Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the group broken by Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), forced to fall under his will and brutally convinced to live under his rules. The second half of the season will focus on preparing for war and gathering the supplies and numbers to take Negan down once and for all.

Rick’s group will find out yet again that the world isn’t what they thought it was. It’s much bigger than anything they’ve seen so far. While they have a singular purpose – to defeat Negan – it won’t come easy. More importantly, victory will require more than Alexandria. They need the numbers of the Kingdom and the Hilltop, but, similar to how Rick felt, Ezekiel (Khary Payton) and Gregory (Xander Berkeley) do not want bloodshed. To convince them otherwise will take more than speeches. The lengths Rick and the group will have to go to in order to find weapons, food, and new fighters is nothing short of remarkable.

We’ll meet new survivors in incredible places. We’ll see Rick and the group tested in ways we’ve never seen before. We’ll see treachery from people we trust. Rick is confident as he will see his group and many others band together with the common goal of taking down Negan. But no amount of planning will prepare the group for all-out war with Negan and his army.

Based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman and published by Image Comics, “The Walking Dead” reigns as television’s most watched drama for Adults 18-49. “The Walking Dead” tells the story of the months and years that follow after a zombie apocalypse and follows a group of survivors, led by police officer Rick Grimes, who travel in search of a safe and secure home. The series is executive produced by showrunner Scott M. Gimple, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert, Greg Nicotero, and Tom Luse.
