Avengers: Infinity War and Justice League can both take a backseat, because the upcoming comic book adaptation that’s caught our eye is Rottentail.

Published in 2015 (buy on ComiXology) and written by David C Hayes and Kevin Moyers, the Rottentail graphic novel followed a geeky scientific researcher named Peter Cotton who transforms into a ravenous half-man/half-rabbit hybrid after being bitten by a mutated test rabbit. He travels back to his hometown of Easter Falls, and carrots aren’t on the menu.

The film adaptation is currently shooting in Phoenix, with .357’s Brian Skiba calling the shots. Corin Nemec, William McNamara, Gianni Capaldi, and Aaron Lee star. Artist Todd Tucker created some of the amazing makeup work that you can see below.

From the Press Release:
Source Point Press, the publishing arm of Source Point Productions, previously announced that their horror graphic novel Rottentail would soon be made into a feature film and cast Corin Nemec (Supernatural, Stargate SG-1, Lake Placid vs. Anaconda) in the lead of Peter Cotton, and the monstrous form of Rottentail. Now further casting has been done and the production of the film is underway.

Director Brian Skiba (Blood Moon Rising, Anatomy of Deception, .357) and Director of Photography Patrice Crochet have already wrapped some successful scenes in the first couple days, including a gore-heavy scene. Producer Travis McIntire says “We blew up someone’s head in a scene today, splattered it across the room, and it went incredibly well. All of the sets here look fantastic and are loaded with neat details.”

Award-winning special FX makeup artist Todd Tucker (Watchmen, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and his team are responsible for the amazing transformation of Corin Nemec’s character Peter Cotton into the monstrous mutant rabbit Rottentail. “From the graphic novel art by Kurt Belcher to the movie concept art to the actual makeup work, it’s incredible seeing the journey of this character,” says Source Point Press Art Director Joshua Werner. “Rottentail is going to horrify and sicken you on screen… and probably make you laugh as well.” When asked by a fan on Twitter how long the makeup takes, actor Corin Nemec replied that it was an hour and a half long process. Not bad for such a drastic change in appearance.

Based on the graphic novel written by David C. Hayes and Kevin Moyers, with art by Kurt Belcher, Rottentail tells the story of geeky fertility researcher Peter Cotton, who is bitten by a mutated test bunny, changing him into the half-man/half-rabbit Rottentail. Peter begins a bloody killing spree of revenge that leads him back to his childhood hometown of Easter Falls. The movie has now cast the full line of characters for the film version, including David C. Hayes himself playing the character Louis, Dominique Swain as Ana and Billy McNamara as Jake.

The Rottentail movie is scheduled for a 2017 release, and the graphic novel it is based on is available for purchase in stores and online from Source Point Press. Source Point Press is a Detroit-based publisher of horror, supernatural, occult and pulp comics, novels, and art books. Founded in 2012 by Joshua Werner and Trico J. Lutkins, Source Point Press slowly paid their dues on the convention circuit, churning out titles. That hard work has begun to pay off as they find themselves as one of the fastest growing small press publishers in the industry!

A Cure for WellnessStarring Dane DeHaan, Jason Isaacs, Mia Goth

Directed by Gore Verbinski

When an unscrupulous, ladder-climbing young executive named Lockhart (Dane DeHaan, from “In Treatment” and Chronicle) is sent to retrieve his company’s CEO from an idyllic but mysterious wellness center at a foggy, remote location in the Swiss Alps, he jumps at the chance to take charge. But, being driven along a super-steep mountain road, he’s involved in a car wreck that results in him being entombed in a full leg-cast and checked in as a patient at the healing spa.

After a series of odd and unsettling events, Lockhart comes to suspect that the sanatorium’s miraculous remedies are not what they seem. When he begins to unravel its startling secrets, his sanity is tested as he finds himself diagnosed with the same curious illness that keeps all the guests there, longing for the lifesaving cure.

The doctor in charge of the slack-jawed, glassy-eyed guests is Dr. Heinrich Volmer (Jason Isaacs from the Harry Potter movies, and “Brotherhood” – channeling vintage Vincent Price), and while he holds all of them dear, his dearest charge is the nubile and ethereal teen, Hannah (Mia Goth, from Nymphomaniac and the upcoming Suspiria reboot). When Lockhart and Hannah start to get friendly, Volmer becomes decidedly unfriendly, and the wounded Wall Street warrior is subjected to a series of shocking “treatments” that are squirm-inducing to say the least.

Between the undulating eels and dentist’s drills, there’s a mystery unfolding, little by little, ot the least of which involves the streams of water flowing through the spa: From bottled to bathtub, and from tanks to caves, the evil elixir is not what it seems.

This is a large-scale Gothic mystery along the lines of Shutter Island, Stoneheart Asylum, and Crimson Peak. And, taking it back a few decades, there are tonal similarities to Dario Argento’s Deep Red, Roman Polanski’s The Tenant, and even Michael Crichton’s Coma. There’s a touch of early-era body horror here, taking cues from the classic Phantom of the Opera and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, but A Cure for Wellness is unabashedly R-rated. It’s interesting to note that the studio’s description for A Cure for Wellness does not even mention director Gore Verbinski’s biggest blockbusters (The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise), but rather name-checks his oddly unsettling horror remake from 2002, The Ring. Verbinski, a former punk rock guitarist turned filmmaker, has an affinity for striking, idiosyncratic visuals in all of his films (even going back to his first feature, the largely misunderstood dark comedy Mouse Hunt), and he holds nothing back here.

A Cure for Wellness is a gorgeously Goth opus, complete with melodrama, a mysterious castle, a mustache-twirling villain, a wide-eyed innocent beauty, and the beleaguered beau who risks it all to rescue her from a frightening fate. The sets and locations are truly magnificent, and cinematographer Bojan Bazelli takes artistic advantage of everything from the hard, green-tiled floors to the soft, pink quivering lips of the heroine. It’s a lush, deliberately-paced film which rewards patient viewers and gives them something pretty to look at along the way.

Having said that, there are a few things that don’t add up when all is said and done. Rational viewers might finish the film shaking their heads, wondering exactly what the whole point was. I did, too, at first. Then I decided to surrender to the macabre insanity and take a dive into those deep waters, and I’m glad I did.

Boyd Holbrook Talks The Predator; No Schwarzenegger?

With Shane Black’s The Predator comes a whirlwind of questions, rumors, and speculations. One of which is whether or not we’ll see Arnold Schwarzenegger returning as an older version of his character Dutch from the first film.

We Got This Covered caught up with star Boyd Holbrook to get the skinny on the Ahnold rumor and more…

I’m currently working on Predator. It’s not a sequel; Shane Black has made something totally new, somehow keeping within the realm of Predator [while also being] absolutely new in terms of the story that we’re talking about today, and rooted in something real. It’s real fresh. I don’t think you’re going to see [Arnold] Schwarzenegger. It would kind of make it a gimmick. It’s horror, science-fiction and a western.

Boyd Holbrook, Olivia Munn, Thomas Jane, Keegan-Michael Key, Sterling K. Brown, Jacob Tremblay, and Trevante Rhodes star. Black is directing from a script by Fred Dekker. John Davis, Joel Silver, and Lawrence Gordon — who produced the original — are producing.

In The Predator, which will be rated R, Munn is playing a scientist opposite Holbrook’s Special Forces commando.

Look for The Predator in theaters on February 9, 2018.

Great Wall, The (2017)

The Great WallStarring Matt Damon, Willem Dafoe, Pedro Pascal, Andy Lau, Luhan, Jing Tian

Directed by Yimou Zhang

The Great Wall is great – as in big – with star-power (Matt Damon and Jing Tian), firepower (it’s directed by Zhang Yimou, who brought us Hero, and House of Flying Daggers), and visual force (it’s in 3D/IMAX). It’s also the most expensive Chinese film ever made.

But is the movie great – as in good? I’ll get to that in a sec. First let’s see what it’s about and whether or not horror fans will like it. It’s rated PG-13 and the monsters are all fairly cartoony-looking in spite of having multiple eyes, razor-teeth and goopy green blood. They resemble Middle Earth Orcs and they move en masse, not unlike zombie hordes – there is no distinct personality to any of them.

This epic fantasy-adventure follows William (Damon), a European medieval mercenary who is in China during the Song Dynasty on a quest to find gunpowder, which he plans to bring back to western civilization. This supernatural substance “turns air into fire” and is sure to revolutionize warfare. As he searches, along with his wisecracking sidekick Tovar (“Game of Thrones’” Pedro Pascal), William is attacked out of nowhere by a colossal beast. He quickly kills it, which in due time leads him to an unexpected fate: fighting flocks of the legendary Tao Tie. These are ferocious animals who emerge once every 60 years to dine on the locals. William and Tovar are not locals, but they have no choice… it’s fight or die. But before they can whet their appetites, the Tao Tie they must breech the Great Wall of China.

William and Tovar arouse suspicion after news of their exploits reach the Nameless Order, the squad trained to the fight the Tao Tie. They do not believe that a foreigner could so quickly best their beast, and so they bring the men up to stand before the Council to explain how they killed the marauding monster with such ease. Their answer is not accepted – and they are taken prisoner. While in the dungeon, they meet another westerner. His name is Ballard (Willem Dafoe) and he seems to know an awful lot… can he be trusted, or not? Whatever the case, William and Tovar get a chance to prove their mettle and are eventually unshackled and allowed to join the fray.

After the western mercenaries hook up with the Chinese military and are isolated with the troops atop the gigantic stone fortress behind the Wall, we get to see some martial arts… sort of. Zhang’s trademark elegantly choreographed battles, real stunt work, and authentic locations are marred by the egregious overuse of CGI and over-eager editing. There are some death-defying acrobatics, impressive flying battle axes and other weaponry, plus the menacing monsters themselves. Though the Tao Tie are indeed vicious, bloodthirsty beasts, there is no actual blood (except for their own green-goo, as previously noted).

William strikes up an alliance and mild flirtation with the beautiful, no-nonsense Commander Lin Mae (Jing Tian). Their chemistry is tepid at best. When it comes to Ballard, Dafoe is also tepid at best… there’s not a whole lot fire here from anyone. What’s more, the logic seems a bit off. It turns out the reason William was able to subdue the random Tao Tie he killed early in the story, was because he was carrying a magnetic stone. Everyone marvels over the rarity of this rock and oohs and ahhs over how it will revolutionize travel by acting as a compass. In reality, Chinese civilization first made compasses from magnetic stones in the Han dynasty (AD100). By the timepoint of the movie (between AD960 and AD1127), the compass had been widely used in navigation and so it wouldn’t have been such a huge revelation.

The screenplay is credited to six writers including Max Brooks (World War Z), Tony Gilroy (the Bourne movies) and Edward Zwick (TV drama guy), which explains why there isn’t a strong voice – then again, it’s right in line with the Eastern philosophy that teamwork by a cohesive unit will always win the day. To me The Great Wall comes across more like an extravaganza cartoon than a bona fide feature film. (Actually, there are a few simply-animated sequences, which are there in order to tell the Tao Tie’s backstory.) Except for a few obligatory character beats, the flick focuses firmly on the Nameless Order. It’s not a bad movie; it’s just kind of “there.”

The Great Wall proudly presents a barrage of battles you might want to see for the 3D… but there is nothing scary or striking about the movie itself.

With “The Originals” set to return to The CW exactly one month from tomorrow, we knew it was just a matter of time before the show’s Season 4 artwork was revealed; and today TV Guide debuted it.  They also provided us with a handy reminder of where things stand…

At the end of Season 3, all of the Mikaelsons were incapacitated. Klaus (Joseph Morgan) is in a coma after being stabbed by Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) with the Tunde blade. Rebekah (Claire Holt) is cursed to become a ripper; Freya (Riley Voelkel) is poisoned; and both Elijah (Daniel Gillies) and Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic) have been bitten with no cure for that bite. The latter four Mikaelsons have tied their souls in a spell so that they won’t wake until their brother does. In the meantime, Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) is on the road trying to find a cure for all of their ailments while Marcel has taken over New Orleans.

“The Originals” resumes on Friday, March 17th, which is one week following the series finale of “The Vampire Diaries.” There will be a time jump of several months when Season 4 begins.

About “The Originals”:
Family is power. The Original Vampire family swore it to each other a thousand years ago. They pledged to remain together, always and forever. Now, centuries have passed, and the bonds of family are broken. Time, tragedy, and hunger for power have torn the Original Family apart.

Ritual Killings Lead to The Harrowing

Like your entertainment on the darker side of the fence? Of course you do. That’s why you’re here. It’s also why we think you’re gonna dig this next flick called The Harrowing!

From the Press Release:
Legendary character actor Michael Ironside (Total Recall) and Arnold Vosloo (The Mummy) are joining Matthew Tompkins (Sicario) and John Hickman (Avengers of Justice) in The Harrowing, written and directed by veteran horror director Jon Keeyes and produced by Wolfclan Productions and Highland Myst Entertainment, filming in Dallas, Texas.

Actor Tompkins and director Keeyes are producing with James Cable, Carl Kirshner, and John Walpole. The film also stars Morgana Shaw (“Salem”), Damon Carney (Hellraiser: Judgement), and Arianne Martin (Drive Angry).

“We’re trying to push horror into some areas that haven’t been explored in a while,” shared director Keeyes. “The Harrowing is an intellectual horror movie that questions reality, explores the psychological and metaphorical meaning of demons, and yet entertains with a lot of great terror.”

Ironside plays Carl Logan, a jaded police lieutenant who must decide whether or not his officer is a killer. Vosloo plays Dr. Whitney, who runs a forensic hospital that’s conducting secret experiments on its patients. The film focuses on vice detective Calhoun, played by Matthew Tompkins, who is accused of the ritualistic murder of his best friend. Bent on finding the truth, he is plunged into Hell when he goes undercover and discovers that demons might be real. This is a hard-boiled thriller in the vein of genre classics Jacobs Ladder and Angel Heart.

Says Tompkins, “The idea of playing a rough-shelled, complex character like Ryan Calhoun, so damaged that reality begins to distort for him to the point that he begins to question his very identify, was fascinating. But to have two powerful actors like Michael Ironside and Arnold Vosloo on conflicting sides of the looking glass was thrilling… it kept me on my toes, and I think it will absolutely have the same disturbing effect on the audience.”

Wolfclan Productions and Highland Myst are currently releasing the celebrated festival hit Nightmare Box. Most recently released is the dramatic thriller Odd Man Out and the award-winning Mechanical Grave, with several projects currently in development. Jon Keeyes is a longtime horror director; his debut film is the cult classic American Nightmare.

Sam Raimi Heads to the Bermuda Triangle

We haven’t had a really good movie about the infamous Bermuda Triangle in years. That’s a shame too, because the legends surrounding this area are plentiful. As fans of the paranormal we’re elated to tell you that THR is reporting that none other than Sam Raimi is working on a new film about this hotbed of supernatural activity.

The director, best known for his Spider-Man and Evil Dead movies, is boarding the mystery thriller project set up at Skydance Productions.

Skydance has one of three Bermuda Triangle projects in development, with Universal and Warner Bros. also developing their own tales about the infamous patch of the Caribbean where planes and ships have inexplicably gone missing.

In such a competitive environment, all the companies are keeping their own takes super-secret for fear of letting out who or what is behind the disappearances. Even getting the directing gig was controlled: Prospective filmmakers had to go to Skydance’s offices just to read the script.

Plot details for this project are, of course, being kept submerged, but it is known that Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard, the co-writers on The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, penned the script.

The Kickstarter campaign that we reported on for the Apocalypse Now survival horror game fell short of its goal, so the developers are instead raising funds to complete the project on its newly launched official website.

From the Press Release:
Ambitious Videogame Project Sets Sights on Crowdfunding Goal via Dedicated Platform With Deeper Connection To Development and Ongoing Project Updates

Francis Ford Coppola’s American Zoetrope and the team of game industry veterans developing the Apocalypse Now videogame adaptation have moved the project from Kickstarter to a dedicated platform at ApocalypseNow.com. The new platform will serve as a rallying point for the community and represents the team’s long-term commitment to both funding the project and sharing details of the development process.

ApocalypseNow.com will be an engaging space where fans and backers can get the latest updates, communicate with the team making the game and continue to support the project through the entirety of the game’s development cycle. The team will rely on this dialogue with the community to help them to create an Apocalypse Now game worthy of the motion picture in every way.

“We are making a unique interactive experience with the Apocalypse Now videogame — it’s like Fallout: New Vegas on acid in Vietnam,” said game director Montgomery Markland. “The Apocalypse Now team plans to raise $5 million to produce an authentic game that the people want to play.”

Through the new platform, the team making the game have created a long-term plan for the community to guide and influence the progress of Apocalypse Now. The development team will be able to entertain and engage with fans, and provide continuous entertainment culminating in the videogame release. The community will start receiving rewards shortly after successful funding and regularly over time.

ApocalypseNow.com will also be a virtual playground for fans, built around the narrative of the original motion picture. The Apocalypse Now community will see real-time updates on the game through posts, livestreams and group community events. Backers will directly communicate with the team through the premium site, creating a systematic and regular flow of conversation, updates and news.

Begin your mission at ApocalypseNow.com, and never get out of the boat.

Terror Films has locked in a U.S. release date for the multi-award winning film Savageland, and to celebrate the film’s launch later this month, a clip has arrived.

Savageland is centered on the night of June 2, 2011. On this date, the largest mass murder in American history occurs in the off-the-grid border town of Sangre de Cristo, Arizona, just a few miles north of Mexico. The entire population of fifty-seven disappears overnight, and the next morning nothing is left but blood trails leading into the desert.

The film was co-directed by Phil Guidry, Simon Herbert, and David Whelan.

Savageland has swept the festival circuit, including being an official selection at the San Diego Comic-Con, the Independent Filmmakers’ Showcase, the Atlanta Horror Film Festival, and the NOLA Horror Film Festival – to name just a few.

The first phase of the release will begin on Friday, February 24th, on the following platforms: iTunes, Amazon Instant, Google Play/YouTube, Vudu, Xbox Live, Sony PlayStation, Vimeo on Demand, I Bleed Indie, and three Roku channels (Free Flix Tonight, 24-Hour Movie Channel, and Free Grindhouse Flix Tonight).

The company plans to expand the release in the coming months on platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Hoopla, Cable VOD, DVD retailers, and others. Raven Banner Entertainment will handle the Canadian release on behalf of Terror Films. Those dates will be announced once they have secured placement.

The official poster and trailer will debut several days prior to the film’s February 24th release date. In the meantime enjoy this sneak peek, titled “Dead Alive!”
