Exclusive: Gehenna Producer Saik Meng Kee on the Challenges of His Role and What the Future Holds

0
0

Yesterday, we posted an interview with Gehenna director Hiroshi Katagiri. Today, we’re speaking with producer Saik Meng Kee about the challenges of producing a film like this, what he sees in the future of Katagiri, and what his own future plans hold. You can read the interview below.

Gehenna stars Patrick Gorman, Simon Phillips, Katherine Wallace, Eva Swan, Sean Sprawling, Justin Gordon, Matthew Edward Hegstrom, and Doug Jones with a cameo appearance by Lance Henriksen.

Synopsis:
Five people travel to the remote, pristine Pacific island of Saipan to scout locations for their company’s new luxury resort. They find curious natives, strange dolls, and learn of historic curses, but they finally find an ideal spot.

On this spot is a cave – and when they enter, what appears to be a Japanese WWII bunker turns out to be much more, and they learn that curiosity can kill, that everyone has private secrets and inner demons, and that there are some places on Earth where death itself can live….

Dread Central: Horror is often a great way to get a director’s name out there but it’s also a rather saturated market, especially with the explosion of various distribution methods. What was it about Gehenna that you made you say, “Yes, I want to be a part of this”?
Saik Meng Kee: The first thing that caught my eye was the picture of the Old Man on the Gehenna poster. It is probably the creepiest Old Man I’ve ever seen, so detailed and so textured. Secondly, when I found out that Hiroshi used to be the creature designer for Steven Spielberg and Guillermo del Toro, it was a done deal for me. When I looked at his creature portfolio, they are so well-crafted and beautiful, which includes his work in HellBoy, that made me feel that Gehenna is going to go somewhere. Thirdly, I was looking for a film with potential to be a franchise, and that includes games. When I saw the creature designs and the Gehenna mythology, I could see that this will translate well into an immersive VR game.

DC: What challenges did you face being the producer of a film that relied so heavily upon practical FX?
SMK: I did not have any challenge in producing the film. The challenge is in creating awareness for this very unique film!

Gehenna is unique in so many ways. It is an English film with Japanese-style horror and with lots of old school-practical FX. On top of that, it was shot in Saipan, in which not many movie has been shot there. If you know Saipan, it is very beautiful but it also has a very dark World War 2 history. If we look at some of the great franchises like Saw or Paranormal Activity, they have very clear and unique horror-propositions. And Gehenna has that, with its very own creature style and mind-bending atmospheric horror.

Saik Meng Kee (middle) and fellow Gehenna cast and crew

DC: This was Hiroshi’s first feature-length film. Now that you’ve seen him in action with something so intense, what do you think the future holds for him?
SMK: I’ve seen so many first-time directors’ film debuts, Gehenna is one of the strongest I’ve ever seen. With strong directing style and wickedly-detailed creature design skills, I am sure Hiroshi’s best is yet to come. I definitely want to see Gehenna sequels!

DC: You’re also a producer on the upcoming thriller Like Lambs. What can you tell us about that film?
SMK: The production duo behind Like Lambs, Ted Marcus and John Kassab, are two crazy talented individuals. They wanted to make a movie about economic collapse that scares people! Again, the unique proposition is very strong, I just think it is a movie that will resonate very strongly today in the current economic and political climate.

DC: What does the future hold in store for you?
SMK: I am really excited in exploring VR as a medium at the moment. I’ve just launched the first free roaming multiplayer VR Park in South East Asia, that was developed by Havson Group, a tech startup. We see this market growing very rapidly in the very near future. Steven Spielberg has invested into Dreamscape Immersive. FoxNext has announced that they will be developing an Alien VR Arcade. I think it is a very interesting medium to bridge the Silicon Valley-Hollywood talents.

A Crooked Man Spinoff Has Been Confirmed

The Conjuring universe, which has already spun off Annabelle and the now-filming The Nun, is adding another spinoff in the form of the Crooked Man, which was suggested just a few weeks ago.

THR reports that Mike Van Waes, who is working on an as-yet-untitled horror-themed Wizard of Oz story, will be tackling the script based on a story from James Wan, who is the mastermind behind this universe. The film will be produced by Wan and Peter Safran. It’s not yet sure if Javier Botet will be reprising his role as the titular character.

As mentioned above, The Conjuring universe is currently expanding with The Nun, which is being directed by Corin Hardy and stars Demian Bichir. That film has a release date of July 13th, 2018. Meanwhile, Annabelle: Creation, which was directed by Lights Out‘s David F. Sandberg, will be hitting theaters on August 11th.

Dark Harvest/Escapes (DVD)

0

Starring Vincent Price, Patti Negri, Cooper Steve Anderson, David Zyler

Directed by James I. Nicholson, David Steensland

Distributed by Severin Films

In today’s film industry, thanks to current technology, making a movie is easier than ever – a blessing and a curse. Audiences have dozens of titles hitting a multitude of platforms each week, making it harder for filmgoers to keep their finger on the pulse of the market. Back in the good ol’ days of video store glory it was much simpler: either a title hit VHS after theatrical release, or it premiered directly to the format. It would be ignorant to say filmmaking was more D.I.Y. back then, but without the benefits (i.e. ease) that come with technology making a movie was no simplistic task. And “fix it in post” wasn’t such a common phrase because digital advancements weren’t there yet. This is why I have a soft spot for DTV horror, especially if it originated during my Wherehouse-roaming heydays. A bad film is a bad film, but a bad film that was clearly made with reverence for the craft is like a warm, tattered blanket – it might not be much to look at, but there is a certain comfort and charm to be appreciated.

Dark Harvest (1992) is a film that debuted to the format on which it was shot: video. Made on a shoestring budget, this is an example of passion being poured into a product because based on the location, acting, set design, and creature FX no one was ever going to be getting rich – or famous – off this thing. It’s the sort of film that would have been easy to dismiss or outright hate when it came out but now, with the rosy tint of nostalgia fully engaged, I found myself appreciating the lo-fi atmosphere more than ever – despite an avalanche of evident shortcomings.

After the standard horror opening, wherein a couple lost in the desert is killed by a strange scarecrow, we’re introduced to a group of twenty-somethings getting ready to head out into the heat for a hiking trek. Their van is unreliable and not long after setting out the fuel pump seizes, leaving the group stranded in the middle of nowhere. Not having the option of calling AAA or texting a friend for help, everyone decides to set out on foot a little earlier than expected, hoping to come across help along the way. Eventually they stop at a seemingly abandoned home and meet a crazy shotgun-wielding dude, who warns them his family is “all dead” and cautions them to be careful. They quickly leave. As they continue to hike under the blazing sun suddenly a scarecrow is spotted, hanging by his lonesome and looking awfully suspect.

The group settles in for the night, building a roaring fire around which Alex (Cooper Steve Anderson) regales them with an epic tale of “bodacious babes”. He’s the “m’lady” type who would’ve made a glorious mod on some white-knight subreddit. The next day the group is splintered as couples and singles begin to wander off on their own. Two of the girls come across a pair of redneck twin brothers, who do the expected and try to rape them. The rest have their own problems, though, as the scarecrows begin to appear and slash their way through our hapless hikers. Unbeknownst to all, they managed to stumble upon an old Indian burial ground… and you know how those things go when it comes to horror.

Writer/Director James I. Nicholson’s story doesn’t exactly make much sense – at all – but that didn’t entirely deter my enjoyment. There is no other way to put it: Dark Harvest is a bad film, filled with amateur-level talent in every department… and yet, for some strange reason I did not hate it with every fiber of my being. Maybe that’s because killer scarecrow movies are far and few between, so you take what you get. This film never reaches the upper echelon of the subgenre, alongside titles like Scarecrows (1988) and Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981), but it is such a bizarre and atypical entry that a modicum of credit is due. I found it best to ignore whatever attempts were being made at delivering a cohesive plot, content to soak up the camp factor.

The scarecrows, while inherently creepy in their own right, are unintentionally amusing, too. One of them is credited as “Gay Scarecrow”, while a woman plays another – and this is only of note because during a scene when the scarecrows are chasing down a man one seems to be – how to put this delicately in 2017 parlance? – well, running “like a girl” and struggling under the oppressively hot sun. It’s cute.

Paired up with Dark Harvest is a completely unrelated horror anthology called Escapes (1986), featuring the legendary Vincent Price. Although this film preceded a more well known and celebrated horror anthology, Jeff Burr’s From a Whisper to a Scream (1987), fans of that picture should not expect the same level of quality or involvement here. Price likely wrapped up all of his scenes before lunch was called on set, and his participation must have been secured on the strength of the dollar and not the quality of the script. This little-seen oddity was written and directed by David Steensland, who according to his IMDb went on to do nothing else. Ever. Anthology films are ostensibly a showcase for vignettes but there is usually some sense of cohesion throughout, yet Escapes has a particularly cobbled-together feel to it. This is likely because Steensland created his feature using a combination of existing shorts and new chapters. None of the segments work, but a few are commendable in their ability to capture a certain nostalgic feeling.

“Hobgoblin Bridge” shows the most promise, as a young boy is goaded into riding his BMX bike over a decrepit old bridge, having been told a hobgoblin lurks beneath. The boy hesitates to make the short trek, but the fear of being seen as weak and afraid is a powerful lure so with great trepidation he starts the short jaunt. His concerns materialize in the form of a tiny stop-motion hobgoblin, and a race to the “finish line” is underway. “A Little Fishy” is about a drunk who goes fishing in a lake and soon finds himself on the other end of a hook. “Coffee Break” is a weird one; with a strange old man insisting a tired truck driver stop off at a specific diner to try their coffee. It’s the kind of fever dream Dale Cooper might’ve had. “Who’s There?” concerns a few escaped lab experiments that play a seemingly deadly game with a man in the forest. “Jonah’s Dream” is the longest story – and you feel it – as an old prospector lady pans for gold and eventually makes the find of a lifetime thanks to her departed husband. “Think Twice” has a ruthless thief stealing an arcane magic crystal from a homeless man, intending to use it’s powers for evil, but as expected he gets his comeuppance in due time.

Price appears in the wraparound as a mailman who delivers a tape to a teen, who has no recollection of ordering it. In a meta move, the tape is called Escapes, starring Vincent Price, and after Price delivers an opening and closing monologue on the stories about to be seen our unwitting teen finds he may be an unexpected participant in the film he’s watching. Whoa.

While neither of these forgotten films is likely to attract even a minor cult following, there is plenty of charm to be found for old-school horror fans who appreciate the subject matter – scarecrows and anthologies – and are forgiving of glaringly clear shortcomings. I would much rather watch “crap” from the ‘80s and ‘90s than nearly any of the horrid DTV horror offerings hitting every streaming service today. Kudos to Severin Films for giving these relics their due even if they aren’t due very much.

Dark Harvest was shot on video, while Escapes is listed as being lensed with 35mm; regardless, both pictures look like VHS tapes transferred to DVD. And I was completely fine with that. Neither of these films should look any better than they do, and honestly if they did a massive part of that archaic charm would be lost. Each film is presented in its original 1.33:1 aspect ratio, perfectly replicating the VHS experience. The image on both looks like a clean – i.e. hasn’t been watched a thousand times – tape with the expected lack of fine detail, minimized grain, bold colors, etc. We all know how a VHS looks, right?

In terms of audio, both have an English Dolby Digital 2.0 track. Dark Harvest sounds compressed, with very little wiggle room for the soundfield. Dialogue is often marred by high desert winds, and the bugs at night are loud. But Rob Hopping’s score has a slight Pumpkinhead-style twang to it, which is nice. Escapes is equally poor, with Price’s opening bits sounding like they were recorded in an echo chamber. Once the film itself gets going things tighten up a bit, but expect results similar to Dark Harvest in that deficiencies often appear and you just have to accept them as part and parcel of making a no-budget feature.

Dark Harvest Bonus Features:

“Remembering Dark Harvest with Patti Negri” is a straightforward chat with one of the film’s actresses, who discusses a bit about her career before turning the chat to shooting the picture.

“Dan Weiss Remembers Dark Harvest via Skype” is another chat, covering the film’s production along with a few fond memories.

Escapes Bonus Features:

“Tom Naygrow on David Steensland” finds the film’s distributor talking about the kind of man Steensland was, with plenty of back patting and praise but not much in terms of meaty information.

Special Features:

  • Remembering Dark Harvest with Patti Negri

Dante Releases Ghost Dog Streets Video

0
0

Last week, I wrote about Colombian rockers Dante and their upcoming video for “Ghost Dog Streets”. Well, that video is out and you can check it out down below!

The video is, according to the band, “…a dark tour around our hometown of Bogota showing everything that happens in the streets at night, all from the perspective of Hellhound.

Directors Jose and Miguel Jimenez tell Dread Central the following:
The concept behind Ghost Dog Streets came from the initial idea of a dark tour through the streets of Bogotá. This was thought out by the band Dante and actually fueled by the songs lyrics. My brother and I thought about an animated shadow dog of sorts creeping through the city walls. This quickly evolved to a P.O.V video of our Hellhound just running amok, causing mischief and wrecking havoc. A bit of grindhouse, Tarantino, “Smack my Bitch Up” and Todd McFarlane and there you have it: Ghost Dog Streets born to raise Hell in Ol’ Santa Fé.

We’ve always had mutual respect for each other’s audiovisual work and we already had done some illustrations for the band, jobs with great flow and brotherhood in between. With this music video we just had the most wickedly satisfying result for both parties ’cause every move made perfect sense, even with the danger of shooting in certain parts of our chaotic hometown.”

If you want to follow Dante, you can do so through their website, Facebook, Twitter, Spotify, and/or YouTube.

Ouija’s Annalise Basso and Sasha Frolova Hop on the Snowpiercer

0

More casting news has arrived for TNT’s small screen series version of “Snowpiercer.” Joining the previously announced Jennifer Connelly, Daveed Diggs, and Mickey Sumner will be Annalise Basso (Ouija: Origin of Evil) and newcomer Sasha Frolova (The Interestings).

Per Deadline Basso will play LJ Anderson, a quiet, diligent, Midwestern girl who lives with her parents in a fourth-class cabin and works in the greenhouse car. Poor but not as desperate as those that live in the tail of the train, LJ has made peace with her daily routine until a major event shakes up her world.

Frolova will portray Pixi Aariak. Pixi is strange, mysterious, and inscrutable, a charismatic chameleon and probably inspired by the expression “still waters run deep.” She returns to the front of the train after a three-year sentence in the prison car and struggles to acclimate to her old life. You can’t take your eyes off of her. And you probably shouldn’t.

The “Snowpiercer” pilot, a futuristic thriller based on the acclaimed 2013 feature by Bong Joon-ho, is directed by Doctor Strange helmer Scott Derrickson. It’s set seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland, and the remnants of humanity inhabit a gigantic, perpetually moving train that circles the globe. It explores class warfare, social injustice, and the politics of survival.

Connelly plays Melanie Cavill, a First Class passenger who works as the Voice of the Train; Diggs plays Layton Well, a prisoner who becomes a reluctant participant in a struggle that could upend life on the train; Sumner will play Bess Till the thoughtful, empathetic, and savvy part of the train’s security force.

“Snowpiercer,” a co-production among Marty Adelstein/ITV Studios’ Tomorrow Studios, Turner’s Studio T, and CJ Entertainment, is exec produced by writer/showrunner Josh Friedman; director Derrickson; Tomorrow Studios’ Adelstein and Becky Clements; and the original film’s Bong Joon-ho, Park Chan-wook, Lee Tae-hun, and Dooho Choi.

Kurt Russell Claims He Was the Pilot That Witnessed the Phoenix Lights Incident

Here’s a very interesting video that slipped past us until today. During a publicity tour for Guardians of the Galaxy 2, actor Kurt Russell was presented with the fact that he was the civil pilot in the air during the 1997 Phoenix Lights incident that radioed in the information!

As he tells the story, he was flying his stepson Oliver to see his girlfriend when they saw six bright lights in the sky. He radioed it in only to be told that there were no other flights in the area. Two years later, Russell came home to find his wife Goldie Hawn watching a program about UFOs and the segment was about that particular event.

You can see the clip below.

New Video Attempts to Explain What Oats Studios is But Only Raises More Questions

A new video from Oats Studios, the production company from Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium, Chappie), has released a new video that attempts to answer the simple question, “Why Oats?” Alas, the surreal sci-fi clip doesn’t really address that so much as it finds ways to evade the question, all while a strange robotic creature with blurred out hands (what is this, a Japanese porno in disguise?) snips rose stems and then sets them alight.

Oats Studios will be releasing short films for purchase through Steam. Additionally, Blomkamp has stated that the shorts will come with the option of getting extra files that will allow users to play around with models, 3D print designs to make their own toys, and more.
