Knott's Berry Farm Celebrates 40 Years of Haunt With New Museum

$

Friday. August 31st, was a special day at Knott's Berry Farm. As the sun began its descent and dipped down behind the buildings and stores of Calico Ghost Town, a lucky group of press, bloggers, fans and staff members gathered in front of a corner building on School House Road.

1973 School House Road, to be exact, which clever fans of Knott's Scary Farm may have already realized is a reference to the very first Halloween Haunt in October of 1973.

The building we all waited so eagerly to enter was originally known as Mother Murphy's Boarding House many years prior. Over the decades it has been the location of various other shops, but as of September 1st it has become the home of the 40th Anniversary Haunt Museum. The exterior of the building is now host to spiderwebs with flickering jack-o-lanterns perched upon the porch roof and a chain hanging across the front steps.

As we stood waiting for the ceremonial "chain cutting" to take place, friends and co-workers eager to share with us their hard work mingled about smiling and shaking hands. This was a labor of love much like the Halloween Haunt itself, and you could tell many amongst the crowd were excited for us to get our first glimpse of the museum proper.

Finally the door opened, and after a round of introductions Jeff (who headed up the team that put the exhibit together) cut the chain, officially opening the museum. Fittingly the first guests to enter were Gary Salisbury, Jim Mayfield and John Waite, who had worked on the very first Haunt in 1973 and were in attendance as honored guests in celebration of the momentous occasion.

On display are some incredible pieces from the Haunt's past. Props, promotional materials, vintage tickets, concept art, and some great photos from behind the scenes have been collected together and cataloged for fans to appreciate as they walk through the exhibit. There is also a very well done video running on a large screen with various interviews playing in multiple segments that supplements the showcase very well.

Some of you may be wondering how this year can be the 40th Anniversary if the first Haunt took place in the fall of 1973. The answer to that is pretty simple and also may be a clue as to why the Museum opens a month before the Haunt.

While it is true that the first Halloween Haunt took place in October of 1973, only the die hard fans can tell you that the event was originally planned to take place the year before. It all began 40 years ago this month, September 1972, with a phone call from Gary Blair to Bill Hollingshead, who at the time was the Director of Entertainment for Knott's Barry Farm. In an upcoming piece I will be going into more detail of the humble beginnings of Haunt. The gist of the story is while they planned to host the event in October of 1972, Bill and others quickly realized there was little time to properly plan for it so the show was rescheduled for the following year.

Recently Damon spoke with Empire about the flick and said weapon: “Neill and the guys at Weta came up with some really gnarly weapons that don’t exist in our world,” he explained. “This one looks like some horrible weapon someone’s going to invent one day. My character is dying. He wants to get [to Elysium] because they have health care.

The Walking Dead: A New Q&A with Showrunner Glen Mazzara

$

A lot of us are off work, celebrating Labor Day and the waning days of summer 2012, but AMC is still hard at it, providing us with another Dispatch from the Set of "The Walking Dead." Today we hear from Glen Mazzara, who describes the most adrenalized season yet.

Showrunner Mazzara also explains how the prison and Woodbury are characters unto themselves and ponders the possibility of his severed head showing up in Season 3.

Q: Last year you said the number one secret to "The Walking Dead" is keeping the zombies scary. Now that Season 3 presents the human danger, have you updated or amended that rule?

A: The number one rule is not so much keeping the zombies scary; it's keeping the show scary. [The zombies] are always a horror, but as our folks learn to live with them, the new horror becomes what people will do to survive and to protect each other in this world. And what they're willing to sacrifice to achieve their ambition. So it's very much a human drama, and I think these new characters, particularly the Governor, certainly do play into that.

Q: What new tricks have you come up with this year to scare the be-jeezus out of us?

A: The show is very adrenalized in Season 3... All these horrible things are being thrown at our characters at such a relentless pace that the audience won't be able to catch their breath and figure out what's going on. So I think it's just the idea that you are immersed in this apocalypse, and there really is no escape.

Related Story: Two New Promos for "The Walking Dead" Season 3 Promise Shivers in the Darkness

Q: In the Season 2 Finale, you established the "Ricktatorship." Now that you've plotted out Season 3, how would you characterize Rick's reign?

A: Rick's reign is initially successful in the fact that they do discover this prison, and that proves at first that Rick was right that there's a place out there that perhaps they can be safe. The question becomes how far can he push the group? What is the breaking point? And Rick will certainly have to deal with how far can he push himself and what is his breaking point.

Q: You wrote the Season 2 finale. What were you most proud of in that episode?

A: When I look back, there's a beautiful shot of the barn burning and the zombies approaching the camera. And then we cut to Hershel looking back in the car. I think Scott Wilson's look of heartbreak, of loss, really made us all realize that that farm was a character. The heartbreaking death of the farm affected us more than we originally intended.

Q: Do you also think of your new locations, the prison and Woodbury, as characters?

A: Without a doubt. Woodbury and the prison have always been conceived as characters. And believe it or not, they have arcs. Just yesterday the writers and I sat down and came up with this big sort of plot twist for both that occurs in the middle of the season.

The Walking Dead: A New Q&A with Showrunner Glen Mazzara

Q: What's it like to write for a character like the Governor? Do you see him as a clear-cut villain, or can you find his humanity?

A: Part of the attraction of "The Walking Dead" for our fans is that it feels real, and that means that the Governor has to feel real. He needs to be a person who has a real soul and has a depth and intelligence, and he's not just a cardboard arch-villain who's going to play as a foil to our characters. I think David Morrissey is doing a phenomenal job finding the humanity in that character, and by having that humanity so prevalent when he commits atrocious acts, I think they'll be that much more horrifying.

Q: Now that we know Michonne and the Governor are making an appearance, is there any other character from the comic you're excited about introducing next?

A: There are a lot of fantastic characters throughout Robert Kirkman's book that we're dying to bring to life. Some will be introduced in this season, and some will be introduced in later seasons. It's our intention to bring all those major characters to life.

Q: Last year you expressed interest in being a zombie. Will it happen this season?

A: There was some talk about casting my head. But I thought that might be bad luck having my severed head lying around on the ground somewhere. I'm still open to it, but I just don't want to jinx anything. [Laughs]

Q: Greg Nicotero told us he is trying to play a zombie this season, but he might be too busy. Maybe just steal his part?

A: I'm actually not a good actor, and I'm worried about them putting all this zombie makeup on me and then "forgetting" to call me to set because I'm so bad.

"The Walking Dead" returns for a third season on Sunday, October 14th.

First Word on and Official Trailer for Big Top Evil

The first word on a new indie film coming out of Florida, Big Top Evil, hit our inbox today, and we have all the early details on the flick along with a look at the official trailer.

Producer/director Sean Haitz (Mangrove Slasher 2) told us of Big Top Evil: "It's a horror/thriller. We have been lucky enough to have some of the most famous circus acts from all around the world appear in it, some even working with the Ringling Bros. circus. Such acts as the famous Wallendas. We shot the entire film in the famous circus town of Sarasota; it was a real thrill to shoot at the Ringling headquarters and other circus locations. We used all volunteer actors, and we will be releasing Big Top Evil through our company, Faced Productions, later this year." His co-director on the project is Chris Potter.

Synopsis:
A group of mid-twenties friends are on a road trip to visit Mangrove County, the scene of the increasingly infamous Mangrove Slasher massacre. On their way they encounter a few problems and meet Candy, a country girl with a dark side, who suggests they spend the night at her parents’ motel, which just so happens to be next to their family-run circus. What these travelers don’t know is this circus is filled with sadistic cannibals. When a ragtag threesome of outlaws unexpectedly show up, guns-a-blazing, things really get out of hand. Not wanting the infamy of their very own massacre, the group must now fight their way out of a literal freak show of psychotic clowns, demented half-human creatures, and a couple of giant galoots that all work for a circus family dead set on keeping their secrets safe.

The first bit of eye candy from the Guillermo del Toro-produced and Andres Muschietti-directed supernatural chiller Mama, starring Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Megan Charpentier, Isabelle Nélisse and Daniel Kash, was nailed by EW; and we have a look at it right here!

The film is based upon a short that you can check out below. Look for it in theaters on January 18, 2013.

Synopsis
Guillermo del Toro presents ‘Mama,’ a supernatural thriller that tells the haunting tale of two little girls who disappeared into the woods the day that their mother was murdered. When they are rescued years later and begin a new life, they find that someone or something still wants to come tuck them in at night.

The day their father killed their mother, sisters Victoria and Lilly vanished near their suburban neighborhood. For five long years, their Uncle Lucas and his girlfriend, Annabel, have been madly searching for them. But when, incredibly, the kids are found alive in a decrepit cabin, the couple wonders if the girls are the only guests they have welcomed into their home.

As Annabel tries to introduce the children to a normal life, she grows convinced of an evil presence in their house. Are the sisters experiencing traumatic stress, or is a ghost coming to visit them? How did the broken girls survive those years all by themselves? As she answers these disturbing questions, the new mother will find that the whispers she hears at bedtime are coming from the lips of a deadly presence.

Predestination and Wolf Creek 2 Find FundingWe love it when a plan comes together! Two genre films we've been talking about around here for quite a while have finally found themselves some funding. That means the screaming will be starting soon! Read on for details.

Deadline reports that funding agency Screen Australia announced that it’s investing $A5.5 million ($US5.6 million) in three features with a total budget of more than $17 million: Michael and Peter Spierig’s Predestination, Greg McLean’s Wolf Creek 2, and Rolf de Heer’s Charlie’s Country.

In Predestination Ethan Hawke plays a time-traveling government agent who recruits his younger self to pursue a particularly elusive criminal. Produced by Paddy McDonald and Tim McGahan, it’s based on a short story by Robert A. Heinlein. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions acquired domestic and some international rights to the action thriller in Cannes. Arclight Films is representing Predestination; Pinnacle will release in Australia.

John Jarratt will reprise his role as a serial killer in the Wolf Creek sequel, which was due to shoot in February but stalled when a private investor withdrew. In the screenplay by McLean and Aaron Sterns, another unwitting backpacker is the prey of the crazed pig-shooter.

Charlie’s Country will star David Gulpilil as a man who struggles to understand how he should define himself as an Aboriginal in modern Australia. Fandango Portobello has foreign, and Hopscotch will release in Oz.

More as it comes!
