The Planet of the Apes franchise has been known to jump around in terms of timetables. How far into the future or past we go has long been a factor (or for Tim Burton a means to a ridiculous ending), but in the sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes, time travel will not be a focus.

Rick Jaffa, who co-wrote and produced Rise, says we shouldn't expect any mind-bending causality time loops in the sequel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

"I don't foresee that," he tells Total Film (via Comic Book Movie.) "But it's interesting you should ask that because it's the one big element that we made a conscious decision not to explore in the first one, and we were worried that there might be some backlash in the science fiction community because of it. When the story first came together, we were very, very excited, and yet, before we pitched it, I thought, 'The one thing missing, though, is time travel. But it's not necessary for this particular telling.'"

Twentieth Century Fox’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will infect theaters on May 23, 2014. Director Rupert Wyatt returns as does star Andy Serkis as the ape “Caesar”.

Amanda Silver, Rick Jaffa, Scott Burns penned the screenplay that “continues the story set forth in last year’s critical and commercial hit movie featuring simians that are given human intelligence and subsequently break out of their facility. At the same time, a virus breaks out that causes the collapse of human society. The new project is taking the story to the next level, with the apes on the path to emerge as society’s new rulers.”

"The Vampire Diaries" returns to The CW on Thursday, October 11th.

Season Four begins with the knowledge that everything is changing. As Elena and her friends enter into the final stretch of high school before graduation sends them off on different paths, their bond to their home town of Mystic Falls takes on a deeper meaning when a new villain seems intent on destroying it.

"Grimm" is off for a few weeks but returns to its regular Friday night 9:00 pm time slot on September 28th.

Well, this seems like a no-brainer! Producer Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity, Insidious) is ready to bring the cinematic scares into reality with his new Los Angeles haunted attraction, The Blumhouse of Horrors!

Blumhouse Productions - the production outfit responsible for the Paranormal Activity franchise, Insidious, and the upcoming Sinister - announced The Blumhouse of Horrors, an innovative and frightening haunted house experience in the heart of downtown Los Angeles.

Blumhouse’s Los Angeles-based movie production team is using its expertise in horror film production, storytelling, and movie set design to transform the Variety Arts Theater into a fully immersive and chillingly intense Halloween attraction.

The Blumhouse of Horrors will be open to the public Thursday through Saturday throughout October and the entire week of Halloween.

The Houston Country Playhouse's production of Frankenstein helmed by Phil Nichols is gearing up for its October 12th start, and we just got word that a new lead actor is stepping into the pivotal role of Victor Frankenstein.

Nichols told us, "We’re in the home stretch on Frankenstein. Unfortunately, Sam Martinez left the production for personal reasons, but a fresh young actor named Louis Crespo, Jr., is taking over the part of Victor Frankenstein." Phil sent over a gallery's worth of stills featuring Crespo, which you can see below.

Synopsis:
FX master and director Phil Nichols’ (Groundead, Renfield: The Un-Dead, Boggy Creek 2010, Psychic Experiment, REEL FX make-up kits) take on this production of Frankenstein by Victor Gialanella from the novel by Mary Shelley is "high Hammer horror style". Nichols says, “We’re pulling out all the stops to homage the Peter Cushing Frankenstein films, drawing inspiration from Evil of Frankenstein and Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell especially.”

Louis Crespo, Jr., is playing Baron Victor Frankenstein. Melissa L. Nichols’ production designs have the feel of the Hammer films in their heyday, and she is fantastic as Helen, one of the "Body Snatchers" that provide the Baron with his raw materials. Other cast members of note include John Stevens (Count Dracula in Renfield: The Un-Dead) as DeLacy, the blind hermit who befriends and teaches the Monster to be human, and Vance Johnson (Dr. Seward in Renfield: The Un-Dead) as the Earl of Frankenstein, father of Victor, who meets his end at the hands of Victor’s monstrous creation. Newcomers Maredith Zaritski plays Elizabeth, Victor’s love interest; Steve Dowell plays Henry Clerval, his schoolmate and unwitting assistant; and Amesti Reioux plays Justine, the governess tragically framed by the Monster for the murder of Victor’s brother, Willem Frankenstein, only to be executed for the crime and used as raw materials by Victor to make his monster a mate. And finally, playing the Monster is Michael Raabe.

Nichols' Facades FX company is doing creature and make-up effects, and even though it is a stage show, being done in Hammer style, it will have some grisly moments when the Monster takes his revenge. In addition, Facades FX is handling the creature effects work for Evil Dead the Musical being directed by Gene Kato, which plays as the second feature midnight show in the double-bill running with Frankenstein.

Just looking at the monstrous merman at the heart of the new indie horror-comedy Don’t Let the Riverbeast Get You! reminds me yet again why an old fashioned rubber monster suits possess so much more charm and personality than the majority of today’s digital monsters.

That tagline for Charles Roxburgh’s low-budget horror comedy Don’t Let the Riverbeast Get You! bills its title creature as “the most indecorous aquatic menace of all-time.” For those without a dictionary, “indecorous” is another word for unseemly. Not entirely sure why that applies to the Riverbeast because I’m sure if you look hard enough you’ll see the costume’s seems. Oops, wrong seams.

I don’t know if the movie will be good or bad but I can’t look at the costume without it warming the cockles of my heart. It’s goofy and ghastly, wonderfully so.

The film stars Matt Farley (who also wrote the script and produced the film), Sharon Scalzo, Kevin McGee, Elizabeth Peterson, and other friends of director Charles Roxburgh, who told Undead Backbrain that they wanted to work together on a fun project that they hope others will have fun watching.

101 Films has acquired the UK distribution rights to the independent horror film "Silent Night, Bloody Night: The Homecoming".

The film is a UK based remake of the 1974 American slasher movie "Silent Night, Bloody Night". Produced by Andrew Jones and directed by James Plumb of Mad Science Films, the cast of the new version includes Adrienne King, star of the original "Friday the 13th". Robert Graham of Independent Moving Pictures and Manish Patel executive produced.

The script for "Silent Night, Bloody Night: The Homecoming" was written by James Plumb and Andrew Jones and tells the story of Butler House, a mansion that has sat in disarray since the death of it's owner Wilfred Butler in 1987. Just before Christmas 2012, Wilfred's grandson Jeffrey and his lawyer appear in the town of Fairwood to negotiate the sale of the property. But an Axe wielding maniac has set up residence in the house, and he doesn't take kindly to strangers.

The deal was negotiated by North Bank Entertainment's Andrew Jones and Steve Davey of 101 Films.

Synopsis
The abandoned home of Wilfred Butler, a wealthy but troubled man who committed suicide in 1982, has been willed to his grandson, Jeffrey. The house has sat in disarray since Wilfred’s death, standing in the way of developers who want to turn the property into residential homes. Just before Christmas 2012, some thirty years after Wilfred’s death, Jeffrey and his lawyer appear in town to negotiate the sale of the property. But an Axe wielding maniac has set up residence in the house, and he doesn’t take kindly to strangers.

Time for a quick "Walking Dead" themed video fix in the form of a new TV spot along with a fan-made video that AMC deemed too hardcore for its "Bring Back Zombies to Dish" campaign. Dig them both now.

Based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman and published by Image Comics, “The Walking Dead” stars Andrew Lincoln, Sarah Wayne Callies, Laurie Holden, Steven Yeun, Norman Reedus, Chandler Riggs, Lauren Cohan, Scott Wilson, IronE Singleton, Melissa McBride, David Morrissey, and Danai Gurira. The series is executive produced by Glen Mazzara, Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, and David Alpert with Greg Nicotero as co-executive producer.

Some quick acquisition news is coming in from the Toronto International Film Festival as Deadline is reporting that Dimension Films is closing in on a deal to pick up the rights to two different Eli Roth projects, Aftershock and Clown.

The site is reporting that Bob Weinstein’s Dimension Films is near a deal to acquire Aftershock, which is screening at the festival, and Clown, which will start production soon. These are two Eli Roth-produced genre films. Roth stars in Aftershock. It is his first big lead role since he brained Nazis as the Bear Jew in Inglourious Basterds. Supposedly the minimum guarantee commitment is upwards of $2 million for each film, plus a guarantee of a wide theatrical release.

Aftershock is an earthquake thriller scripted by Roth, Nicolas Lopez and Guillermo Amoedo; and it marks the English-language debut from director Nicolas Lopez. His last two films, Que Pena Tu Vida and Que Pena Tu Boda, were the highest grossing Chilean films of 2010 and 2011. Among the other cast is Selena Gomez, who was in Chile doing a concert and came over to do a cameo. Lopez’s frequent collaborators Ariel Levy, Nicolas Martinez and Lorenza Izzo also star, along with Natasha Yarovenko and Andrea Osvart. Roth produced with Sobras’ Miguel Asensio, who has produced all of Lopez’s films. Exec producers are Nicolas Lopez and Mac and Helen Cappucino of Vertebra.

Clown is based on a fan-made trailer that drew Roth’s attention when it went viral. Jon Watts is directing a script he wrote with Christopher D. Ford. Ford scripted Robot and Frank, which was just released. Clown is about a loving dad who slaps on a clown costume to fill in for a no-show for his kid’s birthday. He can’t take the clown get-up off when the party ends and discovers the ensemble is cursed and he’s headed toward becoming the embodiment of evil. Clown is produced by Roth, Cross Creek’s Brian Oliver and Vertebra’s Steven Chester Prince.

Well, actually just one kid. Or should we say former kid? He's far too old now to be a kid, but yes, he once was one of "The Kids in the Hall." Read on to find out just who has rounded out Laurence Fishburne's investigative team.

THR Reports that "The Kids in the Hall" alum Scott Thompson has boarded Bryan Fuller's adaptation of the Thomas Harris books. Thompson will recur as Jimmy Price, the third member of the FBI crime scene investigation team led by Laurence Fishburne's Jack Crawford, the head of the FBI's behavioral science unit. Jimmy specializes in fingerprinting and spatter patterns at crime scenes. He rounds out the three-person team that includes Hettienne Park (Young Adult) and Aaron Abrams (L.A. Complex), who play Beverly Katz and Brian Zeller, respectively.

Mads Mikkelsen will play the psychiatrist-turned-serial killer in the 13-episode dramatic take from “Pushing Daisies” creator Bryan Fuller. Caroline Dhavernas also stars as Dr. Alana “Al” Bloom, a psychiatric protege of Hannibal Lecter who teaches psychology at Georgetown University and is consulting with the FBI on criminal profiling when she introduces her mentor to Laurence Fishburne’s Jack Crawford. Lara Jean Chorostecki plays Freddie Lounds, a sleazy tabloid reporter, and Hugh Dancy plays everyone's favorite criminal profiler, Will Graham.

I for one cannot wait to throw away my crappy They Live DVD in its crappy cardboard case. Scream Factory has announced the supplemental material for its new release of the flick, and as per usual we have a winner!

Three more young actors are in negotiations to appear in Alexandre Aja's adaptation of Joe Hill's popular novel Horns, and we have all the details you need right here!

Juno Temple (The Dark Night Rises, Atonement, Killer Joe), Joe Anderson (The Grey, Across the Universe, The Crazies), and Kelli Garner (The Aviator, Lars and the Real Girl, Bully) (pictured l-r below) are the latest actors to board the supernatural fantasy/thriller Horns. The hot young trio are in advanced negotiations to star alongside Daniel Radcliffe. Max Minghella (The Social Network, The Ides of March) is also currently in negotiations for a key role in the film.

Horns is being co-produced and financed by Riza Aziz and Joey McFarland’s Los Angeles-based film production, finance, and international sales company Red Granite Pictures. Red Granite will co-produce the film with Mandalay Pictures. Red Granite Pictures’ international sales arm (Red Granite International), led by Danny Dimbort and Christian Mercuri, is handling foreign sales for the film and will begin discussions with international buyers in Toronto this week.

Based on the best-selling novel by Joe Hill, Horns is being directed by Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D, High Tension) from an adapted screenplay by Keith Bunin ("In Treatment"). Producers are Riza Aziz, Joey McFarland, and Mandalay Pictures President Cathy Schulman. Joe Hill and Red Granite’s Joe Gatta are executive producers.

Horns, a supernatural thriller driven by fantasy, mystery, and romance, follows Ig Perrish (Radcliffe), the number one suspect for the violent rape and murder of his girlfriend, Merrin (Temple). Hungover from a night of hard drinking, Ig awakens one morning to find horns starting to grow from his own head and soon realizes their power drives people to confess their sins and give in to their most selfish and unspeakable impulses – an effective tool in his quest to discover the true circumstances of his late girlfriend’s tragedy and for exacting revenge on her killer.

This rock and roll infused dark fantasy explores why bad things happen to good people and what the loss of true love can do to a man. The widely acclaimed book was on the New York Times best seller list for six weeks and has become an international bestseller as well.

Screen Media Films has announced the formation of Primal Screen, a new horror label that will focus on the development, production, and acquisition of new films relevant to the genre. Screen Media president Suzanne Blech will oversee this new unit of the company, and Michael Dwyer and Seth Needle will be in Toronto at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival in an acquisitions capacity to take meetings for worldwide rights.

“Under our Screen Media Films umbrella, we are excited to launch a branded line of horror titles in this still quite profitable genre,” said Blech. “The brand will focus on connecting with fans by releasing unique genre films that literally appeal to their primal thirst for all things horror.”

Added Dwyer, who is Screen Media’s Vice President of International Sales and Acquisitions: “Internationally, Screen Media has been bringing quality genre titles to market since its inception. We look forward to continuing and expanding the scope of that tradition with the Primal Screen label.”

With Primal Screen, the new label will explore all types of distribution deals - from theatrical to midnight screenings to pure digital distribution - by officially expanding its already established relationships in the genre following the domestic release of horror titles such as Night of the Living Dead 3D: Reanimation, FDR: American Badass, Below Zero, and Inkubus plus international titles including Sweatshop, Remains – a Chiller Network Original, Adrian Garcia Bogliano’s Cold Sweat, Glenn McQuaid’s I Sell the Dead, and Ti West’s Trigger Man.
